Mira Sorvino is adorable in this lovely adaptation of the 17th-century comedy Triumph of Love. When a princess (Sorvino) sets out to return her throne to its rightful heir, the rightful heir turns out to be a handsome young man (Jay Rodan). Of course, the princess falls madly in love with him. Unfortunately, he's been trained by his mentor, an angry philosopher (Ben Kingsley), to hate the princess (he even practices archery using her picture as the target). To set things right and win her heart's desire, the princess dresses herself as a man and--switching from one disguise to another--begins wooing everyone in the philosopher's household, starting with his spinster sister (Fiona Shaw). Though the transformation from the stage to the screen is pretty straightforward, the costumes and sets are beautiful. Sorvino holds her own against British stage vets Kingsley and Shaw. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
Great vampire movie!!!!!.......2007-01-08
I remember this movie from the 80's.......Sexy movie, really got me in to wanting to see vampires more on screen then reading about them. I am a fan of vampires and this movie is a real turn on.......
I Love this movie!!!.......2007-01-01
I saw this movie when it originally came out and immediately fell in love with it. I will admit, however, that it is not to everyone's tastes. It is the typical 80's B-movie: cheesy effects, dialogue, etc; but I'm a die-hard-all-things-vampire-lover!!! I would definitely recommend this movie to fellow vamp lovers, but to just the occasional vampy person, definitely rent it before buying. Most places have only the VHS version for rent and the name for the VHS version is just "To Die For." Definitely give it a chance and form your own opinion. Oh yeah, there is a part 2 to this movie it's called... To Die For 2: Son of Darkness, but part one is the better of the two.
Old movie with a new look!.......2006-11-12
This was a great movie when I first saw it as "To Die For"...It's great to see some oldies coming back. I was a bit thrown off by the title but then the plot clicked in my head. I highly recommend this move as well as its sequel "Son of Darkness: To Die For 2" IF you can find it. Brendan Hughes was great in this movie. Aside from the classics of the genre this movie and Dracula Rising are my two favorites.
PS this is my first "review".
i love this movie.......2006-08-29
This is an awesome movie it was a good old romantic vampire love story and i love them kind of movies it was great
Rent it DON'T buy it !.......2006-07-18
After reading the first two reviews I was willing to give this movie a try. I was very disappointed. This movie has all the awful things of a bad 80's movie, right down to the mullets. The dialogue, special effects (vampire make-up), and plot are very bad. The actor that portrays Vlad is smaller in statue than the girl playing his love interest. I could maybe over look the imagery of the movie if the story was well written, but it is not. Please rent the movie first to see if you like it.

Description
Trapped within the modernist confines of her remote canyon home and stifling marriage to her uptight architect husband Paul (Horatio LeDon Bullet, Haunted Sea), lonely housewife Jean (Kelsey Oldershaw What Women Want, Cinema/Verite, ER) finds liberation and comfort in the arms of Viggo (Andy Mackenzie Throttle, Rock Star 101, Thank Heaven), her free-wheeling and decidedly bohemian lover. Somewhere between the extremes of her new-found freedom and the ordered structure of her marriage lies the path to true happiness... if only she can find the way.
Customer Reviews:
The most wasted two hours of my life since I watched "The Ice Storm".......2007-03-13
Oh......my.......God. What the hell is this movie about? The lead character is completely infuriating. Jesus, woman, if you are so damn bored then go get a job instead of wandering around in your house feeling sorry for yourself and going out spending your husband's money! I have absolutely no connection to this character. Is it too much to ask that she have some initiative, take some responsibility for the state of her life instead of blaming it all on her husband? And then she tries to solve her problem by sleeping with a tatooed, drug-using scumbag with no job, for whom she has to pay the rent on his bathroomless trailer?
Disjointed, badly written, indiscernible motivation for most characters and events, and a really obvious attempt at forcing an unrealistically libertarian philosophy of relationships. Real people do not relate to each other like this, at least, none that I have ever met.
Don't waste your time on this movie.
If we only cared about the characters...........2007-01-05
Belgian Carl Colpaert has a solid reputation as the founder of CINEVILLE Releasing, as a producer of some very fine small films (Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, Where Eskimos Live, Surviving Eden, Hurlyburly, etc) and has directed and written a few less interesting ones. This film THE AFFAIR (originally titled TOPANGA) tries hard to be a European flavored examination of relationships, but for this viewer it falls short not only in story (scripted by Colpaert and Lisa Larrivee) and in a fuzzy cast of TV actors, but also in the directorial stance of being in control of a story that needs a lot of attention.
Jean (Kelsey Oldershaw) is a bored housewife living in a designer house with her architect husband Paul (Horacio Le Don), a man of success who is so self-centered and controlling that he forgets his relationship obligations to his wife. Jean has residual scars from a traumatic childhood experience and her needs go beyond the wifely role, searching for some degree of excitement, passion and fulfillment not available in her marriage. At a local dance club she meets Viggo (Andy Mackenzie), a bohemian passionate, live for the moment guy who sweeps Jean off her feet in an affair that produces disaster in her marriage. The story concentrates on the intricacies of this love triangle, offering alternative ways to approach love, needs, and responsibilities.
The notion is solid (if quite over used) and there are aspects of the film that suffuse the atmosphere with tension and artsy techniques. But in the end the story and the actors elude our concern and we are left feeling like window peeping voyeurs, wondering why we are sneaking a peek.
Grady Harp, January 06
A Great Concept Movie.......2004-09-03
Well, I loved this movie. I loved the way the director and actors negotiated the trepidations of the story and the way Jean and Viggo discovered themselves. This is an all around great story about humanity and a must-see for anyone searching for love.
A Truly Beautiful Film.......2004-09-02
The atmosphere in The Affair is dreamlike, accentuating the characters' internal feelings and how they see their surroundings, rather than simply showing the city as it really is. The film's greatest strength comes from its sad wisdom about relationships and the way its protagonists recognize how precarious their connection is.

Author: hildacrane from United States
This mixture of suspense, comedy, and romance might seem unlikely to work, but it does, due to director Borzage's vision of a love that magically transcends even the most dire of obstacles. This movie is in love with love and the improbable, and in some ways is a Cinderella story almost in reverse (including the removal of a lady's slippers on two occasions). Arthur and Boyer are lovely together. Some of their scenes, luminously lit and heightened by Alfred Newman's lyrical score, are heartbreaking: their beautiful voices are almost like cellos. (Newman wrote a number of such tender and yearning scores in the thirties, including those for "Stella Dallas" and "These Three.") There's also an interesting paralleling of the love/passion that Arthur's husband has for her and that Boyer's friend has for him, although one is destructive and the other nurturing." Cast:Charles Boyer as Paul Dumond, Jean Arthur as Irene Vail, Leo Carrillo as Cesare, Colin Clive as Bruce Vail, Ivan Lebedeff as Michael Browsky, Vail's Chauffeur, George Meeker as Mr. Norton, Lucien Prival as Private Detective, George Davis as Maestro, Dora Clement, Bobby Barber as Paul, a Waiter at Victor's, Phyllis Barry as Bit Part, Joseph E. Bernard as Headwaiter at Victor's.

"I've never been happy before".......2006-06-01
Though it is almost forgotten today, "History is Made at Night" is one of the most beautiful and romantic films ever to grace a movie screen. Not made by one of the major studios and released through Mary Pickford's United Artist in 1937, this film has a fine screenplay from Gene Towne and Graham Baker, and some lovely words of dialog from Vincent Lawrence and David Hertz. A young and luminous Jean Arthur and the continental Charles Boyer utter those words in charming, funny, and poignant fashion.
Like this film, director Frank Borzage is almost forgotten today, but through an impressive body of work that includes films such as "Street Angel" and "Three Comrades," lives on in the minds of true film buffs. "History is Made at Night" is a tender and romantic masterpiece. It easily makes my top ten list of the most romantic films of all time. It is a story of two people who try to cram a lifetime of memories into one night, and then one moment, when tragedy looms on the horizon in the form of an iceberg.
Jean Arthur is Irene Vail, the wife of a cold and unhappy shipping magnate who holds on to her too tight, his jealousy finally driving her to divorce. Colin Clive is her bitter and obsessed husband Bruce, who hatches a plan in Paris to catch her in a compromising position before the divorce decree can become final. But Bruce's plan goes awry and their history will never be the same.
Charles Boyer is Paul Dumond, headwaiter at Chateau Bleu, and Leo Carillo is his very funny chef pal Cesare. Paul is tucking in a drunk customer he has taken to the room next to Irene's in Paris, and overhears the commotion as Irene is set up for a scandal that will tie her to a loveless marriage forever. He steps in through the balcony and rescues her, charading as a jewel thief and wisking her away into the moonlight. It is one of the great scenes ever, in a film full of them.
They share a cab and drive around Paris, ending up at Chateau Bleu, Irene unaware Paul is the headwaiter there. Paul charms his pal Cesare into an after hours meal and he and Irene spend the night there falling in love. It is a long, extended scene full of charm and humor, with some sadness as well. Paul uses a hand puppet to get Irene to open up about her unhappiness and they dance the tango. Carillo is warm and funny as Paul's pal for life who watches and cooks while Paul and the silly American girl from Kansas who dances with naked feet find happiness. It is a happiness Irene has never known, and one she would give her soul for.
They agree to meet the next day when the happy Paul is planning on proposing. Irene doesn't show up, however, and Paul calls her, knowing if she is going back to a loveless marriage then something is wrong. Irene tells him she can never come back to him and he must never try to find her. What Paul does not know is her husband Bruce killed the man he hired to come into Irene's room, in an effort to frame him for murder.
The friendship of Paul and Cesare adds a charming humor to the story, and there is a running joke regarding salad dressing. Their repore is marvelous as they travel to the big apple in an effort to make Irene come to Paul rather than searching for her. The two come up with a scheme to make a place called Victor's in New York the "in" spot everyone comes. Holding a special table for her, Irene finally shows, but it is with the abusive husband she does not love.
Irene is joyous, but Paul thinks she is laughing at him due to his lowly position. Their deep love quickly overcomes this misunderstanding and Irene leaves Bruce once more, planning to run off to Tahiti so she and Paul can truly be happy. But a dark cloud hangs over their dream as an innocent man is set to go on trial back in Paris. Paul is not the kind of man who could let another take the blame or Irene would not love him so. They book passage back to France on Bruce's newest ocean liner, the S.S. Princess Irene.
As the two lovers head towards their destiny, her bitter husband Bruce fumes to discover the French papers are sympathetic to Irene's sacrifice and Paul's gallantry. When it becomes clear Paul will never be convicted for the crime, Bruce dangerously orders the captain to break the transatlantic record in a deep fog and cold water, bringing about a tragedy reminiscent of the Titanic's fate.
Many drown and all left aboard are presumed dead. There is a heartwrenching scene as Paul tries to get Irene onboard the last lifeboat and she clings to him for the love she knows she can not live without. Bruce writes a confession for his crime now that he has nothing to live for and makes one last, violent gesture. But Paul and Irene are not dead yet, clinging to a staircase on deck and desperately trying to know everything they can about each other while they await their fate. They and a handful of survivors hold their breaths to see if the last bulkhead will hold, and keep the S.S. Princess Irene afloat long enough for a rescue.
There are some beautiful and poignant exchanges between Boyer and Arthur in a film that is sweet, funny and tender all at the same time, sometimes in the same moment. Perhaps no other director of his time could have pulled all the elements of this story together so well. Borzage was always looked to by his peers as the go-to guy for any story which required a tender and romantic touch other directors could not pull off.
Jean Arthur is wonderful as the woman clinging to a happiness she has never known and Boyer had one of his finest moments in American film portraying the affable and charming Paul. Borzage sets a very special mood for this touching story of a love that sails with no wind and a full moon. Not just a great romantic film, but one of the great films period, "History is Made at Night" is a forgotten film from a forgotten director, and both deserve to be remembered. All those who love romance will certainly never forget either once they have seen this most beautiful of films for the first time.

Delicious flim-flam - wit and bon mots in 18th century costume.......2006-07-01
Let me begin by saying this. This is not a serious work of intellectual gravity, the rights of the individual, correct social behaviour or the importance of being honest.
It is a comedy of the 18th century, beautifully and comically performed by very able actors indeed. That this made it into film is an unexpected delight for those who love this style, because there is certainly very little that's similar to this material otherwise available!
The plot should be clear enough - previous reviewers have mentioned the details. Put simply, a ravishing young princess is stricken with love at beholding a beautiful young man "as nature intended him". When she realises that this is the prince who is the rightful ruler of the region, who was dispossessed by her own father (and to make things worse, the parents of the rightful prince were, of course, murdered by this same sterling father), she is only momentarily daunted.
The prince is being brought up in isolation by a dedicated philosopher and his scientific sister. The pair are played by the excellent Sir Ben Kingsley and Fiona Shaw, who both understand the element of wicked wit, French farce, a plot full of masked identities and the marvellous sense of fantasy that French comedy of the period conveyed.
Ms Sorvino as the princess is utterly charming, exerting all her wiles as, in order to gain her heart's desire (the love of the usurped prince), she dons masculine garments, flirts with both the sister and the philosopher, and uses her eyes and her ardent eloquence to slay all hearts. It will be no surprise that all ends happily.
For something that is romantic, delightful, funny and wonderfully elegant, sit back with a glass of French champagne and a bowl of bonbons while you enjoy this charming comedy.
Charming Actors in French Farce But No 'Shakespeare in Love".......2005-01-09
It's charming Mira Sorvino, doing the central role of this French farce that was written by Marivaux first played in Paris back in 1732 (so they say). The filmmakers somehow made it in English, with ever-reliable Ben Kingsley and Fiona Shaw. Lucky that they secured these three talents. Sorry that it's not Shakespeare, and equally sorry that the film is not as charming as it should be, like delightful Mira Sorvino herself.
The premise is contrived; you see Ms. Sorvino as the heroine Princess Leonide, who falls in love with Prince Agis (Jay Rodan). Unluckily, the prince is the righteous heir to the throne which the princess has now, for her parents usurped his parents. So, the Princess has to disguise herself as a man, talks her way into the house where the Prince is protected for fear of another assassination. Can you follow me?
If you don't, just forget this part. In short, the film is about the mistaken identities and genders, caused by the protagonist Leonide, or Mira Sorvino, who dresses herself as a man, or woman if the occasion requires, and uses her/his charms to the full. In consequences, all the members of the house -- including the stern protector/philosopher Ben Kingsley and amateur scientist Fiona Shaw -- where Ms. Sorvino sneaks in, find themselves hopelessly and helplessly in love with him ... or her.
One thing must be said. Mira Sorvino is so drop-dead gorgeous (as you know) that no matter how she tries, she cannot look like a male for a moment. Of course, this is a stage contrivance, I know it, and some characters see through it, yes. I know this film is not 'Orlando' where Tilda Swinton was so convincing as both sexes. But the director should have done something, at least.
Another flaw is its bad cameraworks. The camera of Clair Peploe (the wife of Bernado Bertolucci, incidentally), as if to impress us, often floats like a fidgety child. Where the scene should be more romantic to concentrate on the leading actors, the director uses both long shots and close shots (even jump cuts), all disturbing our attention.
The actors are charming to see, and though Mira Sorvino is very funny with her cute, pout mouth, it's Fiona Shaw and Ben Kingsley who are really recommended.
This is no Shakespeare, or 'Shakespeare in Love' for that matter. Still, the actors are good, and well-worth looking for if you like costume dramas.
Excellent Fun Time.......2004-11-05
I thought Triumph of Love was simply one of the best DVDs I've seen in awhile. The style of the film is unique, and it has many fun twists and playful turns. The cast is outstanding. Very funny, romantic, classic.
Pointless and Stupid...a Waste of Time--1 Star is too many.......2004-06-30
I had to watch it twice to get through it. At first, I thought, "how sick is that! She's "leading on" all three people, tricking that poor woman into thinking she's a man!" I thought it was cruel, and stupid, and sick.
The second time, I managed to gut it out all the way through, and thought, "wow, that really WAS cruel, stupid and sick." I realize it was a fictional story (which is probably a good thing for the Princess because we all know that would never work in the real world, 18th century OR 21st century), but I found it to be a complete waste of time. The Princess' remorse doesn't even save her in my eyes, she just shouldn't have done it. The only saving grace for this movie is that it can keep you hanging on, waiting to see the whole situation blow up in the Princess' face.
I can say, I think the period costumes seemed very well done, and the actors did a good job with what they had to work with...an otherwise pretty lousy story. Call me old fashion, I still like movies and stories where people do the right thing for the right reason.
Shakespearian in spirit.......2004-01-25
Doubtless the title of this movie will ring a bell with those who remember the short-lived Broadway musical of the same name, which featured Susan Egan, F. Murray Abraham and Betty Buckley. Based on an early eighteenth century play by French playwright Marivaux, this work can quite easily be compared to Shakespeare in its plot. A young and beautiful princess (sometimes called Leonide, but not here) has fallen in love with the rightful heir to the throne--and her sworn mortal enemy--Agis. Agis has been kept secluded from the outside world by his aunt and uncle, both of whom are serious, strict philosophers who have no time or patience for anything that does not have to do with logic and thought. This, of course, includes love. In order to get close to her beloved, the princess must first get through to both of these characters. She does so by first posing as a young man called Phocion; she succeeds in seducing Agis's aunt, Leontine, but cannot fool her brother, Hermocrates. The Princess then passes herself off as a young woman named Aspasie and works her way into his heart, while still diligently pursuing Agis. As with all plays like this, things are bound to come out, and they do.
The casting in this film was all first-rate, particularly that of Mira Sorvino as the scheming Princess. The costumes, scenery, and music add a whimsical touch to an already whimsical story. One must applaud the creativity of the director/screenwriters, in choosing to make it appear as though this is not a movie, but a play performance captured on film. Highly recommended.

Huge disappointment!.......2005-03-06
The plot is slow and dull, even Anthony Hopkins can't bring it to life. Additionally the quality of the DVD is unbelievably poor. I can't believe any company would produce a DVD that looks and sounds as bad as this one.
