A decade after their last hilarious short, the Oscar-winning A Close Shave, Claymation wonders Wallace and Gromit return for a full-length adventure. Daffy scientist Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his heroic dog Gromit are doing well with their business, Anti-Pesto, a varmint-hunting outfit designed to keep their English town safe from rabbits chomping on prized vegetables. Wallace meets Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter), who appreciates Wallace's humane way of dealing with rabbits (courtesy of the Bun-Vac 6000), and sets up a rivalry with the gun-toting Victor Quartermaine (Ralph Fiennes, enjoying himself more than ever). Creator Nick Park, with co-director/writer Steve Box, delivers a story worthy of the 85-minute running time, although it stretches the act a bit; the formula plays better shorter, but the literally hand-crafted film is a joy to watch. Taking a chapter from classic horror films, a giant were-rabbit is soon on the prowl, and the town is up in arms, what with the annual vegetable contest close at hand. (Anyone who's seen the previous three shorts knows who saves the day.) Never content to do something simply when the extravagant will do, W&G's lives are filled with whimsical Rude Goldberg-style devices, and the opening number showcasing their alarm system is pure Aardman Animation at its finest. Even though there's a new twist here--a few mild sight gags aimed at adults--this G-rated film will delight young and old alike as Park, like team Pixar, seems incapable of making anything but an outstanding film. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie for the whole family.......2007-06-05

The adults love this film and so do the kids. What can I say except that it is such a fun film...the characters are lovable and there are laughs galore. Wallace is so sweet when he falls for Lady Tottington and Gromit is always there to get him out of trouble. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars A classic! .......2007-05-16

This was my introduction to Wallace and Gromit, two very charming characters. Wallace, a cheese-obsessed British chap, and Gromit, his silent but very expressive sidekick dog (who can make tea, drive, etc.) have a humane pest control business named "Anti-pesto." Yes the puns run rampant throughout this film, from the jar of "Middle Age Spread" on the kitchen table, to the classic novels with altered cheese-themed titles ("Waiting for Gouda," "Grated Expectations," etc.)among many others. The film is rich with texture and humor. The sets are delightful, from the charming British neighborhoods to the manor house of Lady Tottington. The plot is about an experiment of Wallace's that goes awry leading to the creation of a giant, vegetable devouring rabbit that comes out at night with the full moon and devours the gardens of the townfolk, including the prized oversize vegetables they're nurturing for a vegetable competition at Tottington's estate. Tottington summons Anti-pesto to contain the beast, much to the chagrin of her bunny-blood-thirsty hunter fiance, Victor Quartermaine, who would love to "bag her bunny" and be the local hero with a furry trophy. The film is beautiful to watch and full of visual humor and clever dialogue and gags of all sorts. Pay attention to Lady Tottington's outfits suggestive of certain vegetables and some mild humor in the style of Benny Hill. Be sure to read anything in print--the tongue-in-cheek humor is planted throughout the film. The music score is wonderful and the filming style is very effective. Be sure to watch the behind the scenes video to gain an appreciation of how painstakingly and lovingly the film was put together by its creators. My husband and 3 year old daughters love this movie. There's humor for everyone, any gender, any age. We watch it all the time. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars 14 carrot movie.......2007-05-12

This is about a clever a movie as I have ever seen. From the claymation (if that is the correct word) to the story, and especially the puns. There is always something new to find in re-watching it. I get the impression that a lot of time and care went into the making of this movie in every aspect, and it is hilarious, a spoof of "horror" movies, a critique of the British social structure, and the list goes on and on. I am not a Brit, and there are probably things I don't get, but this is a ninth inning home run in the world series of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment plus for all ages.......2007-05-11

This movie is awesome. It is very entertaining for adults and kids alike. And the characters are adorable. This is one of those movies you can watch over and over again.
Gromit has always been one of my favourite characters and he shines in this film. Another winner from the guys that brought us chicken run, this is their best yet...

4 out of 5 stars the world's first vegetarian horror movie.......2007-05-11

The movie by itself is fun to watch, but the DVD is full of extras that both kids and claymation fans will enjoy. In addition to deleted/alternative scenes and director Nick Park's commentary, there are the following featurettes:

Goes to Hollywood - traces the history of Wallace and Gromit from when Nick Park was still in film school trying to make A Grand Day Out to The Wrong Trousers (1993) and A Close Shave (1995) winning Oscars for Best Short Animated Film. It includes a clip of Wallace speaking in French, and shorter ones of him doing German, Chinese and Japanese.

Behind the Scenes - shows not only the sets but also the voices behind Wallace (Peter Sallis), Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter) and Victor (Ralph Fiennes).

Studio Tour - an assistant director guides us through possibly every division of Aardman Studios in Bristol -- the rigger workshop, the model-making workshop, the place where they do the background painting, the editing room, even the canteen...

How to Build a Bunny - a model-maker demonstrates how the rabbits in the movie were made, starting from the wire armature to the shaping of the plasticine and the adding of beads for the eyes

Stage Fright - a short claymation feature

Cracking Contraptions - Wallace's inventions in action: the Snoozatron, Shopper 13, and the 525 Crackervac

There are also games and activities meant specially for kids.

A little dog leaves the title character by the side of a road, wondering why its exists. Over the course of several months, Poo meets a leaf, a hen, and a lump of soil, who assures it, "God has not created you for no reason." But little Poo feels rejected until a dandelion sprout accepts it as fertilizer. The message that even the humblest have a place in creation is a worthy one, but Doggy Poo is a long way from Dr. Seuss's "A person's a person, no matter how small." The stop-motion Poo character whines constantly, and the story unfolds at a leaden pace. Parents who find Doggy Poo acceptable viewing for young children--clearly the intended audience--may have to steer their kids away from the genuine article. (Rated: G, all ages; parents may find images of excrement inappropriate for children's entertainment) --Charles Solomon

Description

A little doggy poo feels all alone in the world. He believes that nobody needs him for anything, and that he has no purpose in life. If only Poo had a good friend! Then he wouldn't give up on his dream to be someone important. One day, Poo meets a lovely dandelion sprout. Will she help him make his dream come true?

5 out of 5 stars Unique........2007-06-30

This DVD is just awesome. Yes, the topic is unconventional, but it is extremely well-done. Although the case says it is longer, the show itself is only 30 minutes. The stop-motion animation and score (mostly piano and violin) are wonderful, and the whole story is surprisingly gentle for the subject matter. There is nothing harsh here, but rather poetic.

I would also recommend this film to Christians. There is a strong emphasis on God creating all things for a purpose, even if it is not immediately apparent. There is also a nice element of embracing self-sacrifice for the greater good.

My husband and I were very impressed with this film, and he even said it was one of the most awesome things he'd ever seen. Oh, and my 4-year-old liked it too!

2 out of 5 stars A crappy movie about crap.......2006-01-06

I am never usually harsh, but its about a terd. Does he find a purpose? Yes, in 'dying' for a flower. Lol, i got it because I though it was funny, but it's serious.
it is kinda funny because the whole concept is stupid. No one cares about a pile of poo like that. It was good that pile of dogpoop died, lol. Tell your kids that. After this movie, kids might play with poop or want to with a terd. What a perverted movie. dont treat your kids like idiots.

5 out of 5 stars a tender and moving story.......2005-08-30

This is a wonderful story that my child and I loved watching together. It is a tender and moving tale that we have watched over and over again. At first the title made me a little skeptical to say the least, but after hearing the first part of the music introduction I knew this would be a favorite for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A charming animation sure to please children and adults........2005-06-11

The kids will appreciate the title; the parents will appreciate the content. This is a wonderful animation using the age-old stop motion technique. All I can say is my child loves it and, well, so do I.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you.......2005-03-03

This is a very touching story, that in reality has nothing to with being just a doggy poo, or CRAP as other reviewers call it. It has everything to with the human experience, and what people feel about themselves, and their place in life. It may seem slow paced in places, but the purpose is to give you pause to think about what has just occurred. The simple score is touching and really helps underscore the point of the story. Do not prejudge this film; you can get a lot out of it.

Description

A film about modern romance and the notion that a dog park is the singles bar of the late '90s. A young man, whose girlfriend has just left him and taken their dog, falls for another woman who is also on the rebound, but prefers the company of her dog to the company of men.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Just didn't kick off........2006-06-26

Well, it wasn't a horrible movie, it just seemed to fall flat. The acting was alright, but it wasn't enough. The humorous parts weren't funny. The characters didn't have much depth. It failed to do what a decent chick flick is supposed to do, which is tug on your emotional strings. I'd have to say pass on this one, unless your a really big fan of one of the actors.

4 out of 5 stars Seinfeld with a heart.......2003-08-05

Sometimes movies just work better on television then on the big screen. Bruce McCulloch's Dog Park is one of those instances where without the expectations that paying 10 bucks brings to a movie, a small film's charm can come through.

The story here is really not much of one. Guy gets dumped, girl takes dog, guy walks around complaining about girl who gets dog, and guy then starts falling for another girl with other dog. Yet without an over-bearing plot, the fun of Dog Park comes through, as the characters are given the leverage to express whatever feelings they have about their dating lives. Luke Wilson brings a down to earth quality to his role as Andy, the down-on-his-luck romantic. Wilson gives his character a believable bewilderment about his continuing troubles with the opposite sex. The big surprise here is Natasha Henstridge, making her character Lorna someone who you could actually meet in a bar. Even though sheýs a knockout, the leggy blond is actually able to fit in nicely to the day-to-day quality of the film.

The dialogue is very sitcom like, but on the boob tube that's not a problem. Wilson's and Janeane Garofalo's characters, chat about relationships in almost the same way that Jerry and Elaine talked about dating on Seinfeld. The only difference is the characters are far more endearing. Garofaloýs natural likeability for example, is able to shine through in her small, yet very key role.

Dog Park has more sweet then funny moments, there isn't per say a laugh-out-loud instance in the movie. But Dog Park does have a brisk lightness to it with characters who you don't mind spending 90 minutes with. Think of it as a nice sit down with friends movie, that is much better than what is normally on TV.

5 out of 5 stars subtle and clever spin on love stories.......2003-01-24

for those who need explosions, julia roberts, or buses that can't slow down in order to enjoy a film, this one is not for you. Dog Park is a smart romantic comedy, brilliantly directed and with a great soundtrack to boot (esp. rox sexsmith). the viewer is treated to the added bonus of the chemistry between bruce mccolluch and mark mckinney and between the brothers wilson. not a character is wasted in this film-- rare for a genre that thrives off superfluous "best friend" roles. there are no mere "best friends" in this romantic comedy that not only amuses, but makes subtle assertions about the the human heart. mccolluch's visionary direction makes great use of his talented, all-star cast. mccolluch won't spoonfeed the viewer. if you're not willing to think while viewing, you best watch buy yourself a mainstream american comedy, perhaps something starring david spade.

This tale of dogs vs. city hall is delightful, and the illustrations are beautiful! The cast of playful pooches will astound you with their intelligence, and warm your heart as they win over the "evil" city employee and save their park. Can't wait to see the next Baxter adventure!

5 out of 5 stars doggie hijinks!.......2007-01-23

This DVD tells the story of Baxter and his canine buddies, who hang out together at the dog park, then work as a team to save the park from being closed. Great cast of characters....Story is narrated against a series of wonderful watercolor illustrations. There's action, romance, suspense and comedy! Whoever said "it's a dog's life" didn't meet this bunch.
