Ghostbusters
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. --Tom Keogh

Ghostbusters 2
Much less fun than its predecessor, this 1989 sequel starts off on a bleak note by telling us our heroes from Ghostbusters have been on the skids for five years, and Bill Murray's lead character never did hook up with Sigourney Weaver's lovely symphony musician character. What's more, she has a kid by somebody else. Everybody's on an uphill climb, and Ghostbusters 2 never soars the way the first film did, despite having the same director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Kindergarten Cop). The lame plot finds the boys attempting to prevent a disaster on New York City caused by too many bad vibes in the Big Apple. Yikes! Fortunately, screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have penned enough good one-liners to keep Murray busy, and if the ghostly special effects no longer surprise as they did in Ghostbusters, they're at least inventive. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Stays true to the ghostbusters we know and love!.......2007-06-21

I remember seeing these movies years ago when I was just a young tyke and now with the purchase of this double-feature pack, I can watch them whenever I want.

As always when watching films again when you are older, you catch things you may have missed due to the innocent mind of being a child. Such is the case with these movies. The comedic timing from the entire cast is right on point and will hve you stitches from the beginning until the very end.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis are absolute comic geniuses in these movies. I find the more subtle jokes and humor a bit more appealing as it seems that these are the jokes intended for adults, while the general story is geared toward children. Also, I was never aware that the role of Dana Barret was played by Sigourney Weaver, who is not only amazingly stunning in these films, but also holds her own in the comedy department against the guys.

The double-feature pack doesn't have many extras, but in my mind you can't beat the price and its worth it just for the movies themselves. If you don't have this pack, get it as soon as possible if you are like me and have been a fan of the ghostbusters since childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past!!!.......2007-04-06

We all can sing the song, and know the cartoon, but there is nothing like the real thing! I love both movies!

Who you gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!!!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT DEAL FOR THE TWO FILMS BUT THEY ARE NOT AS FUNNY AS I REMEMBERED.......2007-03-25

I remember really liking the first one in the theater. It just seems to have lost something over the years. Still a great deal for the two films. The first is a classic and the second is certainly watchable. The DVD transfer is quite good on the 2 pack edition.

5 out of 5 stars One of my long time favorites.......2007-03-17

Still a pleasure to watch. Enjoyable comedy. Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis at their best. Great support by Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver. Very good direction and script.

5 out of 5 stars Looks great, one great comedy, one good one, and some interesting extras.......2007-02-20

Since these movies came out in 1983 and 1989, before my youngest son was born, he had somehow missed out on seeing Ghostbusters. While he had seen the second film, he had not seen the first. And for me, I did not remember the second installment being nearly as much fun as the first. So, when I saw this set with the two of them, I bought it. It is a terrific set and has a nice little booklet with some of drawings and sketches that were done to originate the ideas for the first Ghostbusters.

The first movie was a sensation. The title song was remarkable and was the song of 1984. The exuberance of the actors, their chemistry, and the downright strangeness of the story delighted nearly everyone and if my youngest son's reaction is representative of young people today, it is still a great deal of fun. Yes, the effects look much cheesier than they did in 1983 (the year the film was made) before CGI took over effects in film.

It is also fun to watch the film with the commentary and learn more about how the story evolved from Ackroyd's original treatment and what went on in making the movie. Some of the classic lines of the film were improvised or were done by the actor. For example, Dana's (Sigourney Weaver) line to Venkman (Bill Murray) that he didn't seem like a scientist, that he seemed more like a game show host was perfect and supplied by Weaver. The original line given her was more hackneyed, that Venkman seemed more like a used car salesman. The difference is one is fresh and memorable the other would just be lost in the rest of the movie.

There is so much that is wonderful in the first Ghostbusters that it is impossible to list them all. We all have our favorite moments and as we watch the movie we are reminded of more that we really like. Just for fun, look up the cast on IMDB and see what they have all done since. It is quite an interesting exercise.

The second film was inevitable given the success of the first. The domestic box office was $231 million and worldwide it was $291 million for the first movie.

However, I remember feeling that Ghostbusters 2 was a bit of a disappointment. The music wasn't very good (the Bobby Brown stuff was terrible!) and the story seemed too much a sermon instead of the best story they could invent (but maybe it was). As I watched it again after all these years, I have to say that it was better than I remembered. Yes, the Bobby Brown stuff and the rap crap are still awful, but I can look past that.

The beginning picks up five years after the other filmed ended. They are on hard times. Ray and Winston are doing kids parties for extra cash. As they do a little dance to the Ghostbusters theme from the first movie and come to "Who ya gonna call?" the kids shout back "HE MAN!". Quite deflating for the boys. Ray also has an Occult / Paranormal bookstore. Egon is doing research about on how emotions affect the human environment. Venkman has a cable access show interviewing paranormal nutjobs. And Dana is working at a museum because she has a young baby, Oscar, and can't travel with the orchestra.

We get introduced to the main idea of the film when Dana rolls Oscar's baby carriage through some goo on the sidewalk (who would notice in 1980s New York?). When she stops to talk with someone the carriage starts moving on its own!

I did enjoy many of the scenes. The digging in the street, the courtroom scene, the ghost train. It is all quite funny. Yes, it is very tough to surprise and delight the way the first film did, but there is a lot to enjoy. But whomever it was that insisted on Bobby Brown should still be taken outback and given a stern lecture about how bad an idea that was.

There are also two shorts about the first film. One from 1984 and the other more recent. Both are very interesting. There are also some deleted scenes and it is clear why they weren't included.

One great comedy, one good comedy, and some nice extras in this fine two DVD set.

An animated version of a 1970s live-action series (as opposed to a spinoff of the 1984 Bill Murray film), the 1980s children's cartoon GHOSTBUSTERS followed the supernatural adventures of a team of teen crimefighters who set out to battle ghostly baddies with the help of an arsenal of cool sidekicks and weapons like a pet gorilla and a talking dunebuggy. This second volume of episodes concludes the series.

4 out of 5 stars Very good sequel.......2007-01-05

Not as good as the first, but a must have for your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad,not the best either.3 1/2 stars.......2006-12-11

Of course not as great as the first but not bad. There is some great scenes in this movie.I give Ghostbusters 1 five stars and the 2nd 3 and a 1/2 stars.I think it could've been better in some ways. But what sequels live up to the first ones.98 percent of them don't.Anyway if you like the first ghostbusters you will like this one to.

3 out of 5 stars A Mildly Entertaining Sequel.......2006-10-06

The Ghostbusters get blaimed for what happened to the city at the end of the first one. They're called freuds and aren't allowed to hunt ghosts no more. Their first client from the first one (Sigourney Weaver) returns and reunites them when something odd is going on with her baby. Which leads them to check out the sewers and I'm not sure if it's actually explained why. I guess because the baby carage took a mind of it's own with the baby in it on that street or something. Anyway they get in big trouble when they accidently take out the electricity in the city.

The judge declares them guilty and gets ready to send them to jail until ghosts pop out of the red goo that Ray found in the sewers. The judge gives them permission to get rid of them which of course leads to them being allowed to be Ghostbusters again. In mildly entertaining scenes it shows them catching ghosts again. They soon realize that the painting at Weaver's museum job might be the big problem basically...just because Peter (Bill Murray) thinks it looks evil. Of course it is evil with the ghost inside wanting the weird foreighn guy that has a crush on Weaver to get her baby for him. He wants to possess the baby and live a full life again. So it's up to the Ghost Busters to save the day and their big plan to get in the museam "that he seals off with Weaver and the baby inside" and save the day is by using the red goo....to make the Statue of Liberty alive....

Most of the ideas in this film are kinda lame and not that funny. While Bill Murray doesn't get nearly as good of lines as he had in the first film. Still he is likeable and the guys do have chemestry still. The script is just not worthy sequel material when the first film to me was a comedy masterpiece. It was just great fun too and full of originality. This film basically seems like all the originality was used in the first film. Heck I watched the cartoon series and that even had more clever ideas than the second film did. They could've even learned a thing or two from the cartoon series. I admit although the plot is super thin in this film, I don't hate the movie though. It's watchable but pretty disapointing next to the first movie. It's just not what it could've been.

2 out of 5 stars "What are we supposed to do, stick our heads in the toilet?".......2006-08-04

Imagine for a moment that in 1944 MGM decided to make a sequel to "The Wizard of Oz". They managed to reunite the entire original cast: Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan and Billie Burke. The production values were as high as in the first film, and Victor Fleming once again provided capable direction. There was only one problem: the script was deeply flawed and far inferior to that of the previous film.

For those of us who remember the original "Ghostbusters" as an all-time classic from our childhoods, "Ghostbusters 2" is the precise equivalent of that hypothetical "Oz" sequel. For an hour and forty minutes we get to see the characters from one of our favorite movies, played by the same actors, in another movie. The only problem is that it isn't a *good* movie. "Ghostbusters 2" is painfully derivative of its predecessor; it's far less well structured; and Randy Edelman's score can't hold a candle to Elmer Bernstein's for the first film.

As a child I avoided seeing "Ghostbusters 2". I knew it would probably be painful to watch, given my love of the first film, and I was right. As an adult I can now derive some degree of enjoyment from the film. I love the characters, and I love seeing them again. But if you ever find a DVD of "The Wizard of Oz 2" that has dropped in from a parallel dimension... you know who not to call.

4 out of 5 stars Distinguished yet Forgotten Valor.......2006-06-04

If the global conquest of earth by the forces of Evil hung in the balance and could be tipped in the favor for the good of all mankind by these three sorry looking men of distinguished yet long forgotten valor - let's just say that I hope you know some really good prayers. It could end up being a hot time in the old town tonight.

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Pick Em Both Up!.......2004-03-20

Ghostbusters has always been one of my favs! And this DVD release has a been difitally remastered and includes a few newly done scenes! There not brand new scenes or redone completly, the scene is still there, it just has a bit of addition to the end battle with Goza and shows the building a bit more! You wont notcie it really!

Ghostbusters 1 is a great comedy that changed the way people looked at ghosts and ghost effects! These days the FX might look a bit dodgy compared to what they can do these days, but remember they didnt have the tech we have now back then, and this was breaking FX when these movies came out, and they defnitly did a great job with it!

On the first disc you get a few bonus features of trailers , deleted scenes, and a few extras, and of coarse your usualy auiod commentry!

The disapointing bit was I never heard the story of how Ghostbusters came about! Dan Akroyds brother really is an actualy Ghostbuster! They dont catch ghosts or do anything like in this film, but his brother is a paranormal investigator and thats were the idea for this movie began!

Part 2 is a movie that wasnt too bad. but it was not as good as the first! Far from it! But at least the same cast returned and there are far worse movies out there to say it was a bad movie! It may not contain any bonus features on that disc, but its still good to have the collection of both films!

Its a shame when in 1998 the go ahead for Ghostbusters 3 was cancelled. Bill Murry did not want to take place in it, at least they know that a sequll wont work without the original cast!

But these 2 movies are worth getting for your collection if you enjoy paronormal comedies!

5 out of 5 stars Ghostbusting.......2004-01-27

These two movies are both, very funny. Peter, Ray, and Eagan both are scientists/doctors who seek out ghost. In none other then New York City but when the ghost start finding them. They get more then what they bargain for.

5 out of 5 stars A box set so good it's spooky.......2003-10-18

Ghostbusters is just one of those movies that leaves it's footprint on our culture's collective consciousness. "Who ya gonna call" brings out an automatic response to anyone who lived during the 80s and even for many of those who were born after the 1984 debut of Mr. Stay-Puft and Slimer. The Ghostbusters (1984) disk has everything a die hard fan would want, yet has interesting info on the filmmaking process to keep the casual movie watcher occupied. It has several documentaries made during filming and a 15 year retrospective with cast and crew. The director/star commentary provides amusing anecdoetes with Reitman and Ramis' silhouettes a la MST3K. There are oodles of production photos, concept sketches and even before and after SFX shots. The only thing I regret it doesn't have is the music video performed by Ray Parker Jr.
Ghostbusters II certainly doesn't equal or surpass the original, but it is still an entertaining film in its own right. Definately worth buying for the film, but unfortunately, the second disk doesn't offer hardly any of the special features that the original has. Cast biographies and 3 trailers make up all this disk has to offer.
Both disks have a crystal clear picture and while the sound may not be up to par with more modern films, you can still hear the thrum of the proton packs and the rumble of the Marshmallow Man's footsteps with excellent clairity.

5 out of 5 stars You can't NOT enjoy these movies!.......2003-10-04

First I want to say, about the special effects, 1.) Of course they don't look as good if it were made today it was 20 years ago. 2.) Special Efects shouldn't be the main focus of ANY film or it makes them really crappy...The Matrix for example. The first film was great, they had a team of people that just couldn't lose. The script was funny by itself bt the timing in which the cast did it in made it good. The second film, wasn't as good, but that's mainly because by that time they had the "Real Ghostbusters" cartoon show and comic books making them have to tone down a lot of the content knowing that the product was now primarily a childrens concept. If they had as mauch sexual content or adult language in #2 then the comic book lable and DiC would have lost viewers when the parents see that Ghostbusters "isn't really for kids." They had nothing to lose in the first because no one knew what to expect but the second one already had something that it was based on so of course it wasn't as good. But that's not to say it isn't good.

4 out of 5 stars This is their way of selling the sequel to you........2003-09-27

Here's the formula... Ivan Reitman's direction, the warped minds of Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis writing, Bill Murray.

The main reason the second one was so bad was because the first one was so good. I don't remember how many times I saw this movie in the summer of 1984. I do remember I laughed every time.

The DVD finally does it justice on the small screen as well. And some of the outtakes make for fun viewing as well. However, the second one should be left in the sleeve. It just doesn't hold up to the first.

--Tom Keogh

If the global conquest of earth by the forces of Evil hung in the balance and could be tipped in the favor for the good of all mankind by these three sorry looking men of distinguished yet long forgotten valor - let's just say that I hope you know some really good prayers. It could end up being a hot time in the old town tonight.
