Obviously I knew going in that this movie wasn't going to offer anything more than light low-brow entertainment, but it falls below average for it's niche. Even low-brow humour requires some degree of subtlety and context to work, and those things seem mostly absent in this movie. It's also disappointingly uneventful, so much of the movie is set in the one house where not much progresses. I was hoping the guys' schemes would involve some detours to introduce additional environments and characters, but it never happened. The movie is generally pretty dark too, drawing a lot of it's gags from murder attempts. I guess it's a black comedy, but it's not marketed as such. I think it's inconsistent about what it wants to be. Trust the 7 out of 9 negative reviews on this site and don't waste your time with this movie, unless you enjoyed Big Momma's House.

3 out of 5 stars Old ladies and young men: it HAS to work.......2006-01-21

It's sad that Gold Diggers is one of the better National Lampoon releases lately. Dorm Daze had its moments, Lost Reality almost made me weep, and Holiday Reunion made European Vacation look like Roman Holiday.
Anyway, as I said, Gold Diggers has its funny parts, which puts it above the other NL movies. The film starts with Cal (Will Friedle) telling how all he and childhood pal Lenny (NL staple Chris Owen) want in life is sex, money, and women (and he can't decide which order they go in). So, basically broke, they try purse snatching and hold-ups, one of which dressed like a priest and rabbi. This particular incident has the two getting whooped by two old ladies, who later bail them out of jail. They are Doris (Louise Lasser) and Betty Mundt (Renee Taylor), who appear filthy rich. This is what Cal and Lenny believe, so they hatch a plan to marry the old bags and collect on their riches when they die (which is 'six months, a year tops' according to Cal). What they don't know is that Betty and Doris are wicked, planning to insure the boys heavily and then kill them. One dead Asian gardener, plumber, and neighbor later, the two murdering duos discover what they're both planning and see a common problem: they both want money, and Uncle Walt (Rudy DeLuca), the Mundts' Nazi-watching relative, has all of the ladies' cash. It's time for a little B & E (breaking and exiting, according to Lenny).
Clever plot, eh, but is it funny? Kind of. I laughed at how the gardener got his (I can enjoy twisted humor if it's funny), and how every time there was a failed murder, the boys and women stand on the front lawn as the body bag is loaded into an ambulance. It could have been so much better, though, and relies heavily on the likes of old lady flatulence jokes, and hoping seeing old ladies in lingerie constantly is funny (guess what, it's not). So, if you're a die-hard fan of the Lampoon, and you've seen all the classics, Gold Diggers is a much better bet than most of the other recent NL releases (and that Lollipop Boy song is awesome).

2 out of 5 stars How low can Hollywood go?.......2005-07-01

In my experience, seeing the words "National Lampoon" in any film title is a bad omen, indicating tastelessness and a dearth of actual comedy up ahead. National Lampoon's Gold Diggers manages to take the series to an all-time low - which, sadly, is no mean feat. Will Friedle and Chris Owen act as if they are auditioning for a future installment of Dumb and Dumber, and the plot suffers from a definite "ick" factor - and, sadly, those are actually the movie's strengths.

Calvin (Friedle) and Leonard (Owen) grew up together in an orphanage and are now trying to make their mark on the world as young adults. They certainly don't want to have to work for a living, so they take up a life of petty crime. They are pitiful failures at this and wind up in jail. Then, two old ladies they accosted on the street bail them out and invite them for a visit in their impressive home. The guys (by which I mean Calvin, as he's the only one really capable of actual human thought) think their hosts are rich, and so it is that they devise a plan to marry them, wait for their imminent deaths, and then live large on their inheritances. Doris (Louise Lasser) and Betty Mundt (Renee Taylor) may be heirs to the Mundt prophylactics fortune, but they are in fact cash poor (thanks to their insane uncle, who is in charge of the Mundt estate). They make their own plans to marry the two young men, purchase sizable insurance policies on them, and then kill them. The double wedding takes place, the marriages are consummated (do I hear a Yuck!?), and about a month passes. Calvin finds that married life with buxom, not-dead-yet Doris is driving him insane, so he and Leonard begin setting "accidental" traps for their wives; naturally, the women are finalizing their own murder plans at the same time. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this ain't - but that goes without saying.

I won't lie and say I didn't laugh or smile a time or two because I did, but National Lampoon's Gold Diggers aims low - really low - and cannot begin to escape the black hole of stupidity upon which it is built. And I think I speak for the vast majority of human beings when I say that we just don't want to see senior citizen women prancing around onscreen like Victoria's Secret models. There's crude and then there's National Lampoon's crude, and Gold Diggers is as crude as it gets. This film should by all rights be a career killer for anyone involved with it - although Nikki Ziering may emerge relatively unscathed given the fact that her screen time is severely limited.

Okay this was funny, but this was so not fgor kids under 15. I have to say it was funny, but really not for children. I`m ten and I just saw this because of my hard work in this concert and I got to pick out a movie and my dad would wrap it up and give it to me, so I wanted this movie because I saw the previews on demand for the unrated one so I got this because the previews looked ok and funny, but this is so disgusting and not for children so I just turned it off and I really want to return it. Please don`t let you child watch this or children under 15 you really don`t want to gross yourselves out on watching this movie. It may look funny, but take my, a ten year olds advice, don`t see it. I`d give it 2 1/2 stars

1 out of 5 stars Not Funny, Unless You're A Stupid Person.......2005-06-13

Ok first off the movie cover is a lie. That Nikki chick (blond on the cover) is barely in it at all. Yes you see her boobs, but American Wedding already brought us that joy in a much better way. Most of if not all the stars are annoying, if not unlikeable. And through the whole movie the Two guys are with Two nasty old ladies. (I found the fat one apsolutly disgusting) Really by not watching this you're not missing out on anything! This movie could have been good, but it swurves away from the basic plot way two much. I like to call this movie not "Gold Diggers", but "Two Men Living In A House With Two Old Nasy Woman For A @#%$ing Hour And Some Odd Minutes!"

2 out of 5 stars Your kids will probably be bored.......2007-03-17

I realize that this batch of films is aimed at older teenagers and college kids, not adults over the age of 25. However, you can probably do much better picking out films your kids will watch than this collection. That's not to say that there aren't some great yet silly films in the batch, because there are. Next I describe each film in descending order of quality.

UHF (1989) - This is a great film starring Weird Al Yankovic as a directionless young man whose uncle gives him a rundown TV station to manage. His unconventional programming turns things around for himself and the station.

Cooley High (1975) - This is a great film for all ages, and was the basis for the sitcom "What's Happening", although it only faintly resembles it. It is set in south-side Chicago in the mid 60's, and concerns a group of high school friends that have numerous comic encounters, but there is also some tragedy involved in the plot.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - The first one was very funny and fresh, and Keanu Reeves will always be Ted as far as I'm concerned, even if he winds up doing Shakespeare at some point. The plot concerns two slackers who are about to fail history that are given some help from a time traveller from the future. The only problem is that it is so steeped in 80's pop culture that your kids may not get half the jokes.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) - The second one is still funny, it just seems to try harder and not get quite the same comic effect as the first.

The rest of the movies are under the National Lampoon label.

Dorm Daze (2003) - One of National Lampoon's better college farce movies, with the plot set up by a series of silly misunderstandings. The closest thing you're going to get to "Animal House" 25 years after the fact.

Going the Distance (2004) - A Canadian version of Roadtrip. This movie was better than I expected, with a lot of good interaction between the main characters, but still not that great even for a teen farce.

Class Reunion (1982) - This movie had all the ingredients to be funny, but it just bored me, even in 1982. Top that off with all of the 80's and even 70's pop culture references, and I don't think it would do much for today's kids.

The last three movies are just awful - "Movie Madness", "Gold Diggers", and "Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj". I won't even bother to describe them. When I say they're bad, I'm saying they are boring and completely unfunny. If you force your kids to sit through these three films as part of their summer break, they'll be looking forward to going back to school.

The end result is you have three good to excellent films that are all older movies, four mediocre to OK films, and three horrible movies. I think you can do much better at entertaining your older teenagers/college kids than this collection.
