Steve (Russell Crowe) and Monica (Salma Hayek) make a dreadful couple. Something about Monica, a teacher, turns Steve, a photographer, into an insensitive jerk. Steve's behavior makes Monica clingy and hysterical. When the romantic "dramedy" Breaking Up opens, Steve and Monica are doing just that--breaking up. But every time they break up, one of them breaks down and calls the other to suggest, "Let's get together for dinner and talk." By now, they're so hot for each other that they tumble right into bed. As Monica puts it, "As the relationship has deteriorated, we f*** like monkeys!" Breaking Up is a very real portrait of an addictive love affair that strikes a decidedly familiar chord. How many of us have been through unhealthy relationships like this one? Crowe and Hayek are so credible that the movie is most compelling to watch. Their good times are achingly sweet. (When Crowe proposes marriage to Hayek in the back of a taxi, the heart of every female viewer is guaranteed to melt.) But can the good times make up for the bad? Using a mixture of filming techniques--montages, monologues, on-street interviews, plus straight-out dramatic scenes--director Robert Greenwald (The Burning Bed), and Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter Michael Cristofer (The Shadow Box), create a provocative, intimate, and erotic anatomy of the quintessential destructive relationship. --Laura Mirsky
Description
Monica teaches, Steve's a photographer. They've dated more than two years. They're arguing, and she leaves for her apartment, only to return in a few minutes to say they should stop seeing each other. A few days later, they're back together, but within two hours, he takes offense at an off-hand remark, and the separation starts in earnest. They see other people, then, out of the blue, Steve asks Monica to marry him. She says yes, and a time of ecstasy begins: they interview strangers, asking them what makes a marriage work, and she moves in with him. Then comes the wedding, and when Steve freezes, anger rends the relationship again. Can harmony return?

Sam Kinison, Preacher, Lunatic, Legend................
this book written by Sam's Brother is a in depth look to Sam, something the cameras didn't see. if you enjoyed his comedy or if you want to get into his comedy, this is a book for all! some cool photos too.
I LOVE YA SAM
Ok but Not Great.......2006-12-31
I saw him live in 1987 when he was hot and hoped this would be a great reminder of his hilarious sense of humor and delivery but it was far too short (only 45 minutes) and only had a couple of good routines. My hopes were higher than what this delivered! The bonus material was taken from Vegas when he was near the end and it really was not very funny. I would recommend looking at another DVD of his rather than purhcase this one.
BREAKING THE RULES WITH SAM.......2006-07-13
only Sam Kinison could imagine so much to rant about when it comes to everyday life...but in reality...he loved life!
May God Bless his soul!!!
THIS GUY WAS GOOD !.......2006-07-12
How i miss sam kinison ! what a great, great comedian. i am in the process of ordering this dvd . until then, i won't say much until i actually watch it. really, i just wanted to get at least sam kinisons picture onto my site , here . this guy got me laughing so many times, in the eighties. his take on things ; his persona ; his enthusiastic comedy - just fantastic . also, his candid views on things are as relevant today as they were then. how i wish that this genius was still with us !

Shocking.......2006-12-30
It gets one star because you can't give it any less. Truly, woefully poor. What were they thinking of? Leave this alone and watch the original at least 20 times.
the puzzle pieces aren't as smooth fitting as they need to be.......2006-04-30
This movie has a lot of funny moments. There was a nut joke in there which was funny, but it was so random it did not belong in the movie. It was supposed to make you laugh, but it makes you laugh because it's a dumb joke.
Otherwise, most of the humor that is in it works really well, such as the Ice Breakers getting Viagra or how the Chiefs or "Super Chiefs" ended up with their new jobs.
What really takes the subtstance out of this movie though is that they do not cover the breaching of contracts as if that's not important. Rather than making something come of it, they just suddenly end the movie. Granted, they did not want to extend the movie because there was so much humor to fill up almost two hours, and the majority of the audience for this movie won't be looking for serious matters. But the part they leave out just makes the story incohesive. They make is seem as if the president of Claremont is the only one who could get sued, but what about the president's assistant, the Chiefs/"Super Chiefs", and even the "Ice Breakers?" They all could sue for various other things that happened.
They are trying to mix childish humor in a more adult matter, and because of that I was hoping that instead of an expected happy ending, a certain team would not win in one of the games. Actually, they would've probably been funnier because a team would be so bad that you even wonder how they made it to the NHL in the first place.
Second time around.......2006-03-17
Not quite as good as the original however, even with somewhat of a thin plot, it was entertaining. If you liked the first Slap Shot, I do not think you would be wasting your time veiwing the sequel.
slap shot 2 one of the greats.......2005-11-06
slap shot 2 is one of my all time fav. it has a bunch of funny parts and it always has u in a happy and funny mood. gasmer is a great comdian he is my fav. char. in this movie. this movie has to rank in my top10. the hansons kick ass give them some love.
gasmer
"i can't not do that"
haha
Don't bother.......2005-08-09
This is quite possible the worst movie ever made. The original was funny, as the violence of the Hanson's was unpredictable. In this movie, the Hansons seemed contrived. I tried giving this movie one star.

Breaking Up (video with Russell Crowe and Salma Hayek).......2007-02-07
Just watched the movie "Breaking Up." Editing not the best. Watched the alternative/deleted scenes and felt one of the scenes should have been included in the movie to improve clarity. Highly recommended movie for Russell fans; he's adorable and very talented.
Great Movie, Actors, Performances, But May Be Hard to Watch.......2006-02-07
Breaking Up is a movie either loved or hated by everyone who sees it. No one is indifferent. It's the story of a very dysfunctional, pain-filled, sexually charged relationship between two people, Steve and Monica (Russell Crowe and Salma Hayek, both still a few years away at this time from major stardom) who don't have the emotional maturity to handle their sexuality in a responsible fashion. They have great sex, savage each other emotionally, break up, come back together, have more great sex, beat each other up some more, break up...until they're both hurt so deeply they just can't hack it anymore. If you've ever fallen into this category, you're going to love this movie because you'll see yourself in the characters. Or you're going to hate this movie because you see yourself in the characters. Breaking Up is frequently quite funny, but it's "you laugh so you won't cry" brand funny.
Russell Crowe is just amazingly good as Steve, flexing the acting chops that shortly will be exposed to the world in Gladiator. One thing impressive about Russell in Breaking Up is he's not afraid to look bad - emotionally strung-out, tired, unshaven, fat, sloppy. He's completely believable as a guy whose horrible relationship skills are eating him alive.
Salma Hayek matches Russell talent for talent. Director Robert Greenwald tells a touching story about Salma's audition for this role. She came in, she read, and as she was leaving told him, "Thank you for letting me audition for this part, even though I know I'm not going to get it." When he asked, "Why wouldn't you get it?" she told him every part she'd ever gotten so far was a role specifically for a Latina. But that's not the case with Monica - she could be ANYTHING. When Salma received the phone call telling her she'd gotten this part, and realized she'd landed her first role based solely on her own talent with ethnicity not a consideration, she started crying.
While we're on the topic of Salma Hayek, let's take a moment to recognize just how impressive she is, both as an actress and movie star. Really, she stands out from her peers in the actressing profession. In my opinion, there are three areas in which actresses (or actors, for that matter) can be so impressive it makes them a star: face, figure (the least important of the three, though certainly we shouldn't underestimate the fact that people enjoy looking at nice bodies), and acting talent. It's not necessary to have all three to be something of a success. Being really outstanding in any one of the three (except figure alone) and, eh, okay in one of the others can do it. Be impressive in more than one area and we consider that performer truly exceptional.
As moviegoers we've all seen actresses with a beautiful face and figure but not much acting talent. But we want to see them anyway (at least for awhile) because they're so much fun to look at. When that happens, we get Pamela Sue Anderson. Then we have actresses who aren't much in the sex goddess category, but their acting talent is so profound we find them fascinating anyway. When that happens, we get Kathy Bates or Judi Dench. If an actress has a fantastic face, decent acting skills but not much of a bod, we consider ourselves lucky and make her a star. When that happens, we get Michelle Pfeiffer. Once in a great while, along comes an actress with a great face and figure combined with solid though not Academy Award-level acting skills. When that happens, we get Marilyn Monroe or Catherine Zeta-Jones and rave about them. And then, a few times a century, there's an actress who has it all: the face of an angel, a body to match AND absolutely impeccable acting skills. When that happens, we get a young Bette Davis - or Salma Hayek.
Breaking Up was shot on a tiny million-dollar budget. At one point, while shooting a kitchen scene where Salma is chopping carrots, they had to stop filming for half an hour while someone ran to the grocery store because they didn't have enough carrots. Now THAT'S low-budget. There are very few special effects, very little in the way of Hollywood flash. Hell, aside from a few walk-ons, Steve and Monica are the only characters in the film. This is an actor's movie, it stands or falls on the strength of the work of the two main players. Fortunately, from our "main players" in this case we're getting early, exquisite work from two future stars.
Good movie but they should have kept the original VHS cover.......2004-07-14
have you seen the original VHS cover? it screams sexy! When they converted the movie to DVD they made it seem sad. just go to the VHS version and take a look. There's a shot of sexy salma lying on a bed talking on the phone in a tight top giving you come hither looks! Also a nice romantic shot of the couple. the front cover text reads
When the sex is great.
When the passion is intense.
When the love is strong.
It's time for...
Breaking Up
now that's sexy!
The DVD on the other hand is sad, sad, melancholy. two forlorn lovers. they have that same shot on the VHS version, but it's on the back on the box, not the front cover. They completely removed all the text. Also on the disk itself they show them arguing. this is sexy Salma. I don't want to see a picture of her arguing on the disk!(there is some of that in the movie, but there is also a lot of making out!) They kept a slightly different shot of them on the inside cover, but it's not exactly the same powerful shot used on the VHS cover. Also they say something like
"Rich in both comic asides and emotional fisticuffs, Crowe and Hayek are perfectly matched"
matched? fisticuffs?! what happened to the sexy stuff?
I have noticed they are getting rid of a lot of the sex appeal in movies that used to be acceptable and commonplace when they convert a movie to DVD now(2004). politically correct.
just show their heads. They frown on showing anything too sexy now. Unlike prior to the mid 90s when it was ok to show sex appeal.
But the DVD picture quality is great, so that is a fantastic improvement over VHS . Good movie.
Crud Galore.......2003-11-12
Whoever counselled Russell Crowe to take on this role needs to be shot and Crowe needs to rethink keeping that person on staff.
Crowe is so much better than this cheesy material. Thank God in the past few years he has been getting much more juicier and respectable roles offered to him that showcase his immense talent.
As for Salma Hayek, never liked her and possibly never will. She was much too annoying for my taste and I never did get any sense of natural chemistry between her and Crowe. Perhaps they both knew what crud it was and did it only for the paycheck, not caring about even attempting to make it believeable.
The actual premise could have been interesting but all the powers-that-be created was a very forgettable waste of good film.
Not a lot of story, but the scenery is great!.......2003-04-15
If you love either Salma Hayek or Russell Crowe, buy this film.
It didn't win any awards, because it's a "B" movie, but I've paid for and watched a lot worse. Crowe and Hayek worked hard at being a couple in love and it's fun to watch. It's almost as if they were on opposing roller coasters, one at the top while the other was at the bottom.

Burt Reynolds lets his hairpiece go salt-and-pepper gray to play an aging safecracker who adopts lonely housebreaker Casey Siemaszko in this sly little crime comedy. "We're in the same business, kid. Monkey business." Not quite, as naive puppy dog Siemaszko is in it for the thrill (just watch the kick he gets when he blows his first safe, and blows the money up with it), while veteran Reynolds is a no-nonsense professional. Maybe that's what bonds the odd-couple friendship in this offbeat script by John Sayles (Lone Star). Cult comedy director Bill Forsyth (Local Hero) brings out the low-key charm in Reynolds, who underplays his role with the easy confidence of an old pro and merely hints at the real joy he's found in his utterly enthusiastic and loyal (if not too bright) new pal. One of the overlooked delights of 1980s American indie cinema. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Burt Reynolds "turns in one of his most convincing and touching performances in years" (The Washington Times) as a safecracker with a heart of gold in this "comedy of character and timing" (The New York Times) that's both stylish and slick. Co-starring Casey Siemaszko (Young Guns), this "confident, offbeat" (Pauline Kael, The New Yorker) film is "an absolute joy" (Los Angeles Times)! Reynolds is Ernie, a loner thief constantly on the move. But when heand smalltimer Mike (Siemaszko) break into the same house, Ernie takes Mike under his wing, shares the stolen cash and claims, "it's better to have a partner than a witness!" With the adage "you learn by doing" in mind, the experienced pro begins teaching his craft to the eager, young hotshot in a string of successful heists. But when Mike fails to heed Ernie's advice and the police close in, Mike may well have to "learn by doing"'time!
Customer Reviews:
This is the formula for a movie, Kid...a "formula" movie........2005-10-03
Take a small script from one of the foremost names in American independent films (John Sayles). Add one Scottish director who has garnered a sizable cult following for his unique brand of wry understated humor (Bill Forsyth). Combine an aging big name Hollywood star who has seen better days (Burt Reynolds) with a non-descript young American actor whose talent is pedestrian at best (Casey Siemaszko) and a characterful young actress (Sheila Kelley). What one gets isn't another Local Hero--not even close.
Considering the talents involved, Breaking In has to be one of the most disappointing films I've seen in a while. It was the teaming of Forsyth with Reynolds which drew me to the film in the first place, based on what the former accomplished in the quirky and delightful Local Hero. What he managed to elicit from Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert in that film was not only hilarious but downright beatifying and extraordinary. Placing the leads in various offbeat scenarios with memorable supporting characters, then melding that with a keen sense for cultural contrast and humorous irony, made for a timeless comic masterpiece.
Here, however, the script is shallow and uni-dimensional. There seems to be nothing more than the germ of a premise: An experienced lone professional burglar and safecracker runs into, teams up with, and mentors a young ne'er-do-well who ostensibly breaks into houses just for thrills--as well as to raid refrigerators and read other people's mail. What develops is a typical sanitized "experience vs. youth" buddy-buddy "crooks & capers" flick with an inconsistency of comic nuance and no outright laughs. The scenarios from which humor is supposed to be extracted are forced, contrived, and often hackneyed. The dialogue is likewise (listening to Ms. Kelley's "Ode to Male Genitalia" is downright painful!) while the performances are of the consciously understated Northern Exposure variety. Siemaszko's occasional whoops at the thrill of his newly learned skills in larceny are probably the most embarrassing. Reynolds shares in his young protege's excitement by exuding smug wisdom and detached self-satisfaction. Both Reynolds and Siemaszko play out their roles in very predictable fashion, as does the script.
Granted, one should probably watch Breaking In with an emphasis on character development. Plot and "reality" are not really the points here. Indeed, who either wants or expects reality from Bill Forsyth? His marks are evident throughout. Those who have an interest in watching a graying Burt Reynolds playing a role against type will probably enjoy this film the most. However, I truly think fans of Forsyth or Sayles will be disappointed, but will want to see it anyway. Thus, Breaking In is a 2-star guilty pleasure.
Oh, by the way, the film's most memorable performance was by the dog.
Instead of the Usual Junk, Burt Makes a Wonderful Film! .......2005-01-23
I have been a Burt Reynolds fan since the earliest days of his movie career. Once the top actor in the world, with Clint Eastwood, Burt, unfortunately, made it big in films like Gator, Cannonball Run, Stroker Ace, and the Dixie Dancekings. It was one of those rare moments in Hollywood when a pretty actor and a new film genre fuse completely. And when the genre loses its appeal, so does the actor. In music, look what happened to the Bee Gees when disco self-distructed. But Reynolds is a very competent actor. Watch The Longest Yard, Sharkey's Machine, and Boogie Nights. This film belongs among them: Burt has never been better. He's believable, complex, and engaging. He plays mentor to a would-be cat burglar with more ambition than brains, and you will find yourself thoroughly engrossed in his next lesson. He can underplay a role like nobody else. Yet he manages to bring out the character's deepest thoughts and feelings doing little things that few other actors would bring to a role, even if they had the wisdom and life experience to draw from. Today's pretty boys are 80% marketing, and know about as much about real-life as my house cat knows about the jungle.
Burt Reynolds Rules!!.......2003-02-21
Burt Reynolds rules of his portrayal of an aging safecracker in this overlooked movie. It's a must see film!!

French Lightweight Comedy Starring Emmanuel Béart and Charles Berling.......2006-11-24
French lightweight comedy `The Art of Breaking up' (original title `Un Fil a la Patte') is based on a drama written for stage by Georges Feydeau in 1894. You feel that the film's material is originated in stage when the film's `risque' story, which can be divided into three parts (or acts), develops with such familiar gimmicks as mistaken identities, incredible coincidences, or characters hiding in the closet or opening the wrong door.
Emmanuel Béart plays a beautiful diva Lucette, who is passionately in love with poor but handsome playboy Edouard played by Charles Berling. However, though Edouard is still in love with her, he is secretly engaged to Viviane (Sara Forestier), daughter of wealthy Baronne Duverger (Dominique Blanc). Today Edouard came to her to confess the truths, but cannot do it because of irresistible charms of Lucette.
What makes their relations complicated is that Viviane actually knows Lucette, and invited her to sing at her espousal. Silly but mildly funny sequences ensue after Edouard realizes that both Lucette and Vivien are at the latter's house, where he attempts to juggle two different roles as the diva's lover and the rich daughter's fiancé. There are supporting characters like Irrigua (Stanislas Merhar), a suitor to Lucette, a Bouzin (Patrick Timsit) a ballad monger, both providing rhymes in French (but as I don't understand French very much, I cannot tell you whether or not their dialogues are really funny).
The film sometimes looks stagy, but that was not a big problem to me because veteran director Michel Deville keeps the film's pace fast. The film is obviously made with a lower budget than most of costume dramas, but the two leads are very good with beautiful and delectable Emmanuel Béart.
I have never read Georges Feydeau's original drama nor seen any stage productions based on his works, but it is clear that director Michel Deville and screenwriter Rosalinde Deville made changes to the original material. The most embarrassing thing about the film is its lack of subtlety that these turn-of-the-century dramas must have had. Sexual relations between Lucette and Edouard is expressed very obviously (though comically, without nudity), and the third act is a huge disappointment, in which Charles Berling, one of the gifted actors, is seen prowling around naked (but no full frontal) in a most contrives situation.
But I'm afraid that the original material just does not work in the 21st century. The story of a man who deserts a woman for money needs more tact than modernizing the female parts, and seriously, if someone like gorgeous Emmanuel Béart (and diva is pretty rich) is deeply in love with me, I would never, ever leave her. For all good acting, the film needs better treatment of the original story, which looks not only trite today but also too impossible.
