In this 12th-century version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Henry II of England (Peter O'Toole) and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), meet on Christmas Eve to discuss the future of the throne. These two are having slight marital problems, as she is kept in captivity most of the year for raising a rebellion against him, and he flaunts his young mistress. Then there are the problems raised by their three treacherous and traitorous sons.

James Goldman won an Oscar® for the brilliant screenplay, based on his Broadway play. It is a tad wordy, as the action is kept to a minimum, but those words are sharp as daggers. The humor is wicked and black and delivered with very dry, dead-on precision. Sparks fly and the screen sizzles whenever Hepburn and O'Toole tango, which is often. Both were nominated for Academy Awards® for their vigorous performances. (She won; he didn't.) There's also an infamous homo-erotic exchange between Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) and Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins). Both actors were making their feature-film debuts. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Film.......2007-07-03

This is a great film with unforgettable performances -- a classic by any definition. You can't really compare it to the drek that normally released as a movie today. Do yourself a tremendous favor and buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Medieval dysfunction.......2007-06-28

It is Christmas, 1183 and aging King Henry II of England meets with his estranged wife Eleanor of Aquitaine to decide which of their three sons will inherit the kingdom upon Henry's death. Each has a favorite and one must be chosen, and through deception, torment, connivance and deceit the "family" follows through in their respective roles. It is a wonderful story and though the outcome is in doubt, one thing is certain....there will never be another Christmas like this one!

Strong performances are universally good in "The Lion in Winter" and Katharine Hepburn earned a much deserved Academy Award. It's a shame that Peter O'Toole didn't win as well, as the two are equally matched for spark-flying drama. A third dazzling performance is turned in by a young Timothy Dalton as King Philip of France.

Though as much as the drama is perfected, "The Lion in Winter" (1968) hasn't particularly worn the test of time well. The dialogue is kitschy, (sometimes unintentionally funny) and the dysfunction is all too broad. Emotions change faster than you can snap your fingers, so many of the scenes don't play out as well as they should. That said however, "The Lion in Winter" is worth seeing for Hepburn, O'Toole and Dalton. On that score, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Lion in Winter.......2007-06-28

Shot on location in France and the British Isles, and based on an excoriating play by Richard Goldman, "Lion" is a wit-fueled, magnificently acted parable of power-lust and extreme family dysfunction. O'Toole and Oscar winner Hepburn are superb as the grizzled, sarcastic regent and his cunning wife, locked in a never-ending exchange of venomous criticisms. A youthful Anthony Hopkins, in a spirited turn, pops off some of the best insults. Aside from the endless machinations of various family members, Harvey adds period flavor with authentic costumes and gloomy, tone-perfect settings. When this "Lion" roars, you'll be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars The "Lion" roars.......2007-06-14

"The Lion in Winter" is one of the best films ever made. It has the language, scope and beauty of a great Shakespearean play. It also has two magnificent performances by O'Toole (King Henry II) and Hepburn (Queen Eleanor)and a fine early film appearance by Anthony Hopkins (Richard the Lionhearted). It concerns the struggle of Henry's three sons to take the crown and King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) is willing to use Richard's love for him to destroy the kingdom.

4 out of 5 stars Start to finish great performances........2007-06-06

Great storyline. Untoppable Performances. I keep buying copies, because my friends keep making off with them. This one dosn't dissapoint.

This story of a winsome orphan and his guardian dragon features an Academy Award-nominated score and song, Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water." The combination of a live-action story with an animated figure was innovative in 1977, and the green dragon with pink wings will still charm youngsters today. However, its plot has the boy running from a nasty family to whom he's been sold into slavery, as well as an evil magician who tries to steal the dragon for his parts. These dark story lines may scare or bore younger children, who only want to see Elliot the dragon belch fire and give Pete rides on his back. And older children who might appreciate the plot may scoff at the relatively crude animation. This leaves a rather narrow audience window of about ages 3 to 7. A cast of veterans includes Shelley Winters, Mickey Rooney, and Red Buttons, who all turn in the hammiest of performances. Acting newcomer Reddy demonstrates both why her acting career never took off and why her singing career did. (Lines like "You're a bunch of superstitious ding-dongs" don't give her much help.) However, her sometimes awkward performance as the lonely lighthouse keeper who gives the boy a home provides the film with its heart. Bottom line: it's a keeper for diehard Disney fans, dragon lovers, and those who remember this movie fondly from their childhood. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Pete, a young orphan, runs away to a Maine fishing town with his best friend--a lovable, sometimes invisible dragon named Elliott! When they are taken in by a kind lighthouse keeper, Nora (Helen Reddy), and her father (Mickey Rooney), Elliott's prank playing lands them in big trouble. Then, when crooked salesmen try to capture Elliott for their own gain, Pete must attempt a daring rescue.

Exhibiting a darker edge to his hero persona, the strapping Gary Cooper has the (Frank Lloyd) Wright stuff as architect Harold Roark, a "fool visionary" who refuses to conform his artistic ideas to popular taste. His inflexibility makes enemies out of a tabloid architecture critic and a tycoon (Raymond Massey), who proclaims, "All men can be bought... there are no men of integrity." Keating (Kent Smith), a former classmate, urges Roark to take "the middle of the road so it's sure to please everybody." But Roark will not compromise, and when one of his building designs is radically altered without his consent, he resorts to drastic measures. Adapted for the screen by Ayn Rand from her towering and controversial bestseller, The Fountainhead is about as subtle as that phallic drill Roark wields so impressively, which catches the frenzied eye of the formidable Dominique Francon (Patricia Neal in her film debut). She recognizes Roark's nobility, but fears he has no chance "in a world where beauty, genius and greatness have no chance." Rand did little to dilute her polemics for the screen, resulting in melodramatic scenes that border on high camp, such as Roark and Francon's rather sexually charged discussion about limestone. Rand practiced what she preached. According to a bonus featurette about the making of the film, she refused to trim Roark's then-unprecedented six-minute courtroom speech in which he defends his actions. Even for those who don't adhere to her philosophy, The Fountainhead does offer something rarely seen on screens these days, a man of unshakable principles. And Hollywood could sure note Rand's object lesson about the perils of mediocrity and catering to "the mob." For Cooper fans, The Fountainhead is an essential addition to your DVD library. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Based on the novel by philosopher Ayn Rand, this is the story of architect Howard Roark. An idealist, Roark believes he can balance his values with the needs of society. His mentor disagrees - encouraging him to compromise his integrity rather than suffer for his artistic goals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!!.......2007-06-08

I don't remember how many times I have read the book, but I do remember the first time I watched this movie many years ago and the impression it left in me. Many years later, my daughter in law gave two presents on a father's day, the book and a rental copy of the movie. A few years later I purchased it on DVD to last me forever.
This movie is 100% a copy of the book.

4 out of 5 stars The Fountainhead.......2007-05-29

I'm not a big Gary Cooper fan but he absolutely excels as an idealistic architect, probably loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright. It's fun to watch Patricia Neal as a young beauty. This was a big budget film and had several Hollywood leading people in supporting roles. Filmed in black and white, based on the famous novel of the same name by Ayn Rand.

3 out of 5 stars Cartoon characters and cartoon philosophy..........2007-05-16

I've never read Ayn Rand, and this Grand Guignol monodrama doesn't inspire me to start now-- the subtlety of a jackhammer (including an *actual* one), the extreme one-dimensionality of virtually all aspects of this movie, the confusion of intransigence with principles, and the naive suggestion that all that is mainstream is inherently bad and all that is non-conformist is inherently good, paints an outrageously cartoon world. It is a fairy tale that only those who choose to "play the victim" (of society) would find appealing.

In spite of all that (actually, mostly *because* of it) I give it three stars. It does have 1) great production value, 2) quite a bit of laugh-out-loud unintentional burlesque and 3) instills a total amazement that anyone could ever take this remotely seriously even as a metaphor or morality play.

It is in fact, Le Théâtre de l'Absurde which, if intentional would have done Camus proud. I shudder to think that Rand's outlook on life in society was truly as vacuous as is suggested by this movie. But she wrote the screenplay, and apparently had *complete control* so it's not like one can blame someone else for its shallow idealisms. All this makes the claims that "the book is a lot better," rather faint praise, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars The Fountainhead.......2007-03-27

I haven't watched this DVD yet, but it arrived quickly and in excellent conditon.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking all around..........2007-03-16

While the book was groundbreaking and continues to be one of the most successful sellers in American literature, the film version also was significant in its own right. Its technological innovations continue to be discussed in film classes, however the photography, building sets, philosophical dialog, and minimalist romanticism make this a pleasantly fascinating watch for any viewer who has ground down their teeth while enduring the schlock pouring out of Hollywood over the past several years.

"A basket full of kisses for a basket full of hugs." Those are chilling words, at least when uttered by that ice princess, Patty McCormack. As Rhoda Penmark, she is as pretty as a porcelain doll but drips venom with each curtsey and polite response. Little Rhoda's mother is terrified she has passed on her own mother's corruption. Oops, turns out she's right. This passes the test of time, as it still gets under your skin. The character development is tight and the story very involving. Not even Freddy Krueger had the ability to scare like tiny McCormack, looking just like a little adult while she literally beats out the competition for a penmanship award. However, director Mervyn LeRoy's hands were tied over the ending, which was changed from the source material--Maxwell Anderson's hit Broadway play. A supposedly more appropriate, and moral, ending was demanded by the studio. This was remade (badly) in 1985. --Rochelle O'Gorman

i will never forget seeing this movie the bad seed when i was a young teenager. i have seen it over and over again since my teenage years. this movie is top notch. the acting in this movie is superb. every character in this movie deserved an ACADEMY AWARD. the bad seed is a true, real thriller. this movie has everything. nothing is lacking in this movie. where did they find this child actress ? i am astonished every time i watch this movie at her chilling performance. i do not think i ever saw her in another movie. she should have been at the top of every directors list for a role in their movies. i find acting talent to be lacking. especially, in this type of movie genre. i am always shocked when i see the date this movie was made 1956. this movie was way ahead of its time and underappreciated. everyone should watch this movie and understand afterwards what a true classic it truly is.

5 out of 5 stars The Bad Seed.......2007-06-26

LeRoy's divinely campy classic about a psychopathic child with a suspiciously sweet veneer was adapted from Maxwell Anderson's Broadway play, also starring Kelly and McCormack. When Christine discovers a long-buried secret about her own biological family just as another "accidental" death clouds their home once again, the plot takes a chilling twist. McCormack is one of the eeriest evil dolls you'll see, and Eileen Heckart, playing the mother of Rhoda's first victim, delivers an extraordinary, Oscar-nominated performance. Despite a silly tacked-on ending dictated by sponsors of the day, "The Bad Seed" remains a highly distinctive, creepy little thriller about a very badly misbehaved child. Classic dialogue between Rhoda and her dad: "What will you give me for a basket of hugs?" "A basket of kisses!" Yikes!

2 out of 5 stars melodrama to whip up fear of genetic determinism.......2007-06-06

This is a crude plug for genetic determinism of a sociopathic child murderer. While some of the details of the plot are frightening - a child committing savage acts for the most mundane of motives - the one-sided assumption that it is purely because of "bad genes" ruined the experience for me. Sure, I admit my bias for a combination of genetic temperament with environment to explain who we become, so my revulsion is personal. I just think viewers should know about the film's message,

1 out of 5 stars Awful and badly acted; not as good as the book.......2007-04-17

Having read the book by William March many years ago and really liking it, I recently had the chance to see the film version again. It is obviously not as good as the book; in fact it is pretty terrible and laughable.

It's obvious that it's just an opened up stage play; it seems stiff and stilted and stagey; everyone seems to speak loudly as if trying to make their voices reach the upper balconies of a theater. Pretty badly acted all around but the worst is Nancy Kelly. She got an Oscar nomination for this?? All she does is scream or shout her lines in an increasingly hoarse voice and wrings her hands dramatically almost like a character in a Perils of Pauline movie. She is so laughably bad in every scene and her character is just about as stupid. Finally it takes a hammer to the head for her to figure out what's going on.

Patty McCormack and the usually excellent character actor Henry Jones are both pretty one-note in their performances. Enough said. But the saddest is to see the great Eileen Heckart overacting badly as a grieving drunk of a mother. Her histrionics make you want Rhoda to do away with her too. And the neighbor Monica...equally annoying. I kept waiting for Rhoda to shove her down the stairs just to shut up her incessant prattling on about nothing.

This was a huge hit on Broadway and the cast was carried over for the film version; maybe it worked better on stage, I don't know...but it's a pretty awful film; not the classic it's reputed to be. Not a bit of suspense or horror or anything else here to give you chills. Just a chance to watch some good actors like Heckart and Jones stumble around with a silly script and overact like kids in a high school play. It's a lot of fun to watch if your intent is to not take it seriously and to make fun of it. Then you should have a good time.

****SPOILER FOLLOWS****

Best part? The end when Rhoda gets nailed by a bolt of lightning. Too bad the lightning didn't get her mom at some point early on.

5 out of 5 stars Back When Hollywood Knew How To TOTALLY CREEP YOU OUT!.......2007-04-12

Nothing creeps out and frightens and audience on more levels than something horrorable that could honestly happen in real life. The other creepy thing about this movie is the question it asks. Are truly bad people bornas a result of bad genes or made products of maladjustedf enironments growing up, which is the primise of this movie.

Too look at her the young girl child in the bad seed is on her surface sugar and spice and everything nice. But under that sweet gentle refined lady like exterior beats the heart of an uncompromising savage willing to do, say and hurt anyone to get her way. The child in this movie is a champion manipulator who beleives all people are put on this Earth specifically for her use as she see's fit. The child is an absolute sadist. The funny thing is part of you is taken in by her sweet darling image. The most wonderful thing abouut the Bad Seed is its ending, you think she gets off but does she really! Watch the movie. The Bad Seed is in all ways shocking and funny.

Several films have documented or dramatized the incredible saga of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated trans-Antarctic expedition, but The Endurance offers the most comprehensive one-source reference. Originally presented as a PBS Nova special and narrated by Liam Neeson, this excellent film--based on Caroline Alexander's acclaimed book, also titled after the ironic name of Shackleton's doomed ship--chronicles the astonishing events of 1914-16, when Shackleton and 27 crewmen survived against all odds after their ship was crushed in the polar ice floes. This is the only "Shackleton" film to incorporate new footage, expert interviews, dramatic recreations (without dialogue), and expedition photographer Frank Hurley's archival film and photographs. The cumulative effect of this extensive material gives the viewer an almost palpable sense of the expedition's hardship and unlikely survival, made possible in part by a man who had precisely the required experience and leadership skills, and in part by what can only be described as divine intervention. No matter how you interpret it, this is rightly called "the greatest survival story ever told." --Jeff Shannon

Description

A retelling of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated expedition to Antarctica in 1914-1916, featuring new footage of the actual locations and interviews with surviving relatives of key expedition members, plus archived audio interviews with expedition members and a generous helping of the footage and still photos shot on the expedition. Narrated by Liam Neeson.

5 out of 5 stars Epic true story of heroism beyond the odds........2007-05-27

This is a beautifully made documentary of Ernest Shackletons legendary failed Antarctic Expedition. Narrated and supplemented with real photos from the expedition, a few dramatazation re-enactments. The true spirit of these men is told in great style here. If you like true adventure and life or death survival I reccomend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Endurance.......2007-05-14

The best documentary I have ever seen. If it wasn't true no one would believe it. An incredible testament to the power of the human will to survive. Better than anything Hollywood could ever imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Not for elementary students, but I liked it........2007-04-09

Since my elementary students read a story about Sir Earnest Shackeleton's arctic expedition I hoped this would be good visual reinforment for what they learned. It is a documentary (that I found interesting), but a bit much for the younger crowd. If you teach, this video is more appropriate for middle to high school students, not elementary.

4 out of 5 stars Look at it for breakfast, suck it for lunch, eat it for dinner.......2007-03-28

The best film on this topic. A documentry without the stale aftertaste

5 out of 5 stars review of "the endureance".......2007-03-09

i caught a portion of this documentary while at a friend's house, and i just HAD to buy it and watch the whole thing. far and away, one of the best documentaries i have ever seen! the fact that it covers one of the greatest survival stories ever doesn't hurt either. original expedition photos, modern HD video shot on site, excellent voice-over from liam neeson, a plethora of extra features . . . . what more could one ask for? shakleton was a MAN in every sense of the word.

Self-confidence, uncertainty about relationships with the opposite sex, and integrity are issues that confront virtually every preteen. Identical twins Zack (Dylan Sprouse) and Cody (Cole Sprouse) prove just how different they are from one another as they struggle with all three challenges in Taking Over the Tipton. When teen idol Jesse McCartney checks in to the Tipton Hotel in "Rock Star in the House," London (Brenda Song) and Maddie (Ashley Tisdale) appear willing go to any length to make contact with the famous singer while Zack's entrepreneurial instincts lead him to ransack McCartney's room for saleable memorabilia and an oblivious Cody focuses on completing his science project in Arwin's (Brian Stepanek) workshop. Eventually, both boys are caught being dishonest and the experience teaches each of them an important lesson about integrity and self-respect. Zack suddenly finds himself confused and at odds with a good friend and basketball teammate when he begins to see her for the girl she really is in "Kisses and Basketball" and "French 101" focuses on Maddie's attempt to cure London's shopping obsession and Cody's lack of self-confidence. Nowhere are Zack's and Cody's differences more apparent than in the state of their shared bedroom, and the conflict between Zack's propensity for chaos and Cody's obsessive cleanliness culminates in a dispute that sends Cody packing for a space of his own in "Odd Couple." A never-before-seen bonus episode combines Feng Shui and Shakespeare for a novel perspective on luck and misguided love and the Backstage Disney featurette interviews Cole and Dylan Spruce and includes a preview of Jesse McCartney's "Right Where You Want Me." 5 out of 5 stars absolutely necessary!.......2007-06-08

As a child I couldn't get enough of this film. When I learned it was availabe on dvd the first thing i did was buy it. The second thing i did was call my mother. No film could ever be as worthy of dvd status as this one! If you have children please show it to them. It is something that i hope is an essential part of childhood.

3 out of 5 stars Toyland Uber Alles.......2007-05-29

If this 1961 Disney musical reminds you a bit of 1939's WIZARD OF OZ, that's hardly surprising. You got your fairy tale villages (well, Mother Goose, actually, but who's counting?): you've got spooky forests with trees that come alive and scare innocent children : and you've got Ray Bolger (this time as a bad guy, but still dancing up a storm when given a chance). There's even an Ed Wynn connection, sort of, since the lovable comedian, seen in here in a fairly small role, reportedly once rejected the title role in the '39 classic because it was "way too small." I guess, 22 years on, he had learned his lesson.

Apparently, both this version of BABES IN TOYLAND and the earlier Laurel and Hardy adaptation, took considerable liberties with the Victor Herbert stage play--to the point where you could say they were only loosely adapted on same. Since the source work is not really considered a classic itself, such revisions probably shouldn't matter much. Hollywood-izing (or "Disney-izing") classic fairy tales or children's literature is one thing, submitting a turn-of-the-century operetta to the the same treatment should not upset purists too much.

It is interesting to note, however, that by 1961, the thrust of the storyline had switched from a scheming uncle trying to rob children of their inheritance, to a Snidely Whiplash type villain out to force the beautiful, innocent young Mary (who despite her name and her cockle-shell full garden is anything but "contrary"--in general anyway , although she lets her contempt for the villain, Barnaby, show) into marriage so that he rob her of HER inheritance (and presumably other things as well). Of course to do so, he must dispatch her handsome young fiance, Tom Piper, which proves to be no easy task, after all, especially when the sole help this arch-villain can enlist are a couple of bumbling refugees from the old ZORRO TV series.

The fact that the Disney folks were thinking that older-teen style mushiness played better than little kid adventure may have been indicative of a change in the cinematic Zeitgeist--we're on the verge of the swingin' 60s after all--or maybe it just had to do with the fact that Annette was a hot Disney property at the time and they needed a plotline that would focus on her and NOT on the cute little kids (all supposed to be her younger siblings, it would appear). In fact the screen emphasis on Annette and beau Tom Piper (Tommy Sands) is so great that aside from Ann Jillian (billed here as "Ann Jilliann") as Bo Peep, it's not even clear who the other kids are supposed to be. Perennial Disney favorite, Kevin Corcoran, is listed as Boy Blue in the credits. Who knew? He doesn't even get to blow his horn.

So it's a kids' movie in which the actual kid actors get short shrift and little screen time. Well, of course, Judy Garland was already an adolescent herself by the time she played Dorothy. Annette is a bit older than that: I believe she's about 20 here, and while she in no way possesses the vocal power and acting chops of a young Garland, she certainly projects the girl-next-door charm that had become her trademark by this time. Tommy Sands actually does have the smooth good looks and even smoother vocal style of a potential musical star, but he was born a bit too late for that genre's heyday. This was to be his sole musical, unfortunately for him: and his regular job as a teenage idol endured about as long as his real-life marriage to Nancy Sinatra. All in all, kind of a shame.

I was fascinated to learn (from a previous reviewer) that Disney himself had wanted to make a quality musical and was actually quite unsatisfied with this film. He did manage to achieve that goal just four years later with MARY POPPINS. As for BABES IN TOYLAND itself, it ain't half bad. The musical numbers, many of which really were from the Victor Herbert operetta, are entertaining. The choreography is pretty good (although the dance numbers could have been SHOT better). The stop motion animation is pretty effective in the toy soldier battle scenes. And the cast is quite good (and let me throw in a mention for Tommy Kirk as well, another appealing Disney regular of the era, who would soon be blackballed by the company for proving to be relatively uncloseted in his personal life).

Kids, who aren't too jaded by contemporary special-effects-laden fare, should enjoy the film. The dialog and some of the lyrics are just sophisticated enough to give the adults something to savor as well (yes, they did that back then too: they just didn't have to ANNOUNCE it by giving all the wisecracks to a hip comedian like Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy). All in all, not bad.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy is better than what some people hope . . . MMC Presents.......2007-05-14

Growing up is a difficult thing to do for some of us. And we all understand love in different ways. Mother Goose introduces this film, and I am reminded that I was in the minds of those who made the movie as well as everyone else. Tom and Mary "loves" us all. And so we find out who is the boss after all, hee hee. Babes in Toyland is a wonderful movie. It does not go stale over the years because of the vast array of characters who we can identify with over the years. I saw this film when it first was released. The only thing I remembered was the talking trees. This act happened when my mother gave me an ice cream sandwich. The second time I saw the film was when Walt Disney presented it on The Wonderful World of Disney. The Disney presentation has so many extras from the vault . . . At Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party; the march of the wooden army men brought back joyful memories. And then I saw the DVD this year, 2007. To me, I heard the words, and my eyes opened to a new understanding of this expanded and entertaining version of a Mickey Mouse Club presentation.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS MOVIE.......2007-04-16

I remember watching this movie when I was going up I love it. Its a Disney movie and I love all old Disney movies.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for the whole family!.......2007-01-30

This movie is a wholesome delight! Where good triumphs over evil. Where lessons are taught and morals are learned. The beautiful music and the enchanting costumes will keep you and your family pleasently entertained. This movie is a true classic one that should be enjoyed by familys for many years to come.

Description

Never before seen in their entirety in the States, the eight original full-length episodes in SET 6 explode with the saucy wit and flamboyant humor that made The Benny Hill Show an international phenomenon. Armed with his naughty, nubile Hill's Angels and the adorable The Hill's Little Angels, Benny sails into new stratospheres of hilarity, whether it's with Fred Scuttle and his daily newspaper or Lana and her gaggle of Performing Men. Classic sketches such as "The Crook Report" and "The Halitosis Kid" show off the slapstick silliness that made Benny the undisputed king of comedy.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Too restrained.......2007-06-13

Benny Hill was obviously feeling pressure from political correctness at this point, as the Hill's Angels segments are far less raunchy and more covered up than in the previous sets. Benny obviously tries to go for cuteness by using children in the filmed comedy segments(they aren't bad,but they're no substitute for a bald guy getting his head slapped). It gets kind of tiresome after a while.

4 out of 5 stars A great finale.......2007-02-05

Of all the ones before, this is the best. It is fresh, no repeat skits, and the inventiveness is wonderful. There are some new faces, and the Hill's little angels are great. For Benny Hill fans, it is sad this ends the series, but wonderful it ends on a high note. What I found so special is that none of the material was shown before on commercial television in the US, so I was seeing it for the first time.

This is an essential set for Benny Hill fans.

The bonus interviews with three Hill's angels was rather weak; hardly worth the effort, and inferior to the other interviews in the earlier sets. I also found it difficult to hear all the words (or make them out) during some of the songs. Either the accents had changed a bit, or the sound tracks were poorly mixed. But this is minor.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Benny!!!.......2007-01-23

What more can I say but AWESOME! I watched this as a kid but never got to see every show. If you are a fan of Benny Hill, this series is a must see. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Benny Hill Simply the BEST!.......2007-01-18

MASTER Comedian Benny Hill is simply the BEST! When I was a student in University in England, The Benny Hill Show was guaranteed to brighten up my day especially when there was thick snow and ice outside my room in the Hall of Residence. As for Hill's Angels, a play on the words - "Hell's Angels", what can I say? They are really SAS! Sensuous and Seductive, voluptuous, curvaceous, nubile, beautiful...words fail me. Be sure you have a strong heart before you watch them as their graceful gyrations may just give you a heart attack, if you don't have a stroke laughing till your belly aches. To this day, I have a personally autographed photo of Benny Hill with his trademark cheeky grin, on my office wall with his handwritten words, "To Michael, Cheers!" I am one of his biggest fans and he is sorely missed. "People who are not broad minded always complain that Benny's jokes are in poor taste and too raunchy. However, I always believe that minds like parachutes work best when they are open. I know, I used to parachute myself. As Benny would pronounce in his hilarious guise as Chinaman Mr. Chow Mein, who bears a striking resemblance to the former Chinese Premier Deng Shiao Ping with his slicked back black hair, "Stoopid irriots!!" HA! HA! Enjoy! By Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet who is a famous Travel, Food & Wine Writer/Editor in Asia.

The title of Tim Blake Nelson's harrowing drama of Jewish death camp prisoners who rise up against their captors to "destroy the machinery" refers as much to the compromise and cloudy morality of collaboration as to the gray world coated in the smoke and ash of the crematoriums. Inspired by real-life events at the Auschwitz death camp, The Grey Zone stars David Arquette as a soul-deadened laborer whose being fiercely jolts to life when he finds a young girl alive among the gassed corpses. He's the heart and soul of an outstanding cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Daniel Benzali as revolt leaders, Allan Corduner as the shunned camp doctor, and Harvey Keitel as the commandant. Nelson's rapid pacing, intimate shooting, and terse, jagged dialogue give the moral debate a discomforting immediacy as it races a deadline. When doom hangs in the air, sure death creates unique priorities. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Almost.......2007-06-29

This is an almost impossible topic to do well; Nelson and company came very close. There are a few historical errors, and the relationship between SS and prisoners - with the exception of the people like Nyszli - was rarely as "conversational" as the film suggests. The hierarachy within the sonderkommando itself is also missing, which was a key part of what they had to contend with. Typically, SS spoke directly (in the form of giving orders) to non-Jewish kapos; not to the class of prisoners who figure centrally in the film. Likewise, the frenetic pace of the work when there was a transport to be "disposed of" was not shown here. I assume this was in the interest of everything being "matter of fact," which _is_ generally true to the sonderkommando's everday adaptation to their task.

I found the mix of accents confusing - why did only the Germans get them? And some of the interaction around planning the rebellion needed a bit more context, I think.

That said, there is more here that is _essentially_ true than in most Holocaust films. The grayness of the film itself fit its subject. When the "ash speaks" at the end, in the form of the incinerated girl, I was initially put off. Why this flight of poetry in the midst of such an unpoetic film. But it was short and on point enough to add at least something.

4 out of 5 stars gut-wrenching, heartfelt..........2007-06-12

The women in this astounding film are incredible; Mira Sorvino, in particular--who turns in another Oscar-caliber performance. What I can't get over is the fact I had no idea she was even in it. The entire time I was watching this tremendous re-enactment I kept thinking (whenever her character was on screen) who is this woman? Where did they find her? I simply could not connect her to the wonderful, scene-stealing job she did in Mighty Aphrodity; the actress is that good here.

I do my best to keep from writing lengthy reviews (very often skip over them as well when wanting to find out about a film am interested in, etc.) so I won't go into the plot and what happens. Will only say that, although I always look foreward to seeing Harvey Keitel on screen, I only wish that he had refrained from going with a German accent. Not many American actors can do a foreign accent and do it well, not even Meryl Streep--and I don't care what some people might say about that. Accents never sound right. They should have just hired a German actor to play the part, etc.

All in all, kudos to the folks for making the film. It just might leave you choking back a sob or two. Strong stuff. Am currently reading Eyewitness Auschwitz by Filip Muller (and I have read others on the subject.) This film struck me as pretty authentic--and am glad it was made.

Thank you to one and all for all the hard work that made this unforgetable motion picture possible..

5 out of 5 stars Never again!.......2007-06-02

This movie takes you into the holocaust in a way that makes the characters more than ciphers. There is a story here, and images that will haunt you for years to come. Yes, the Jews had to do a lot of the Nazis' dirty work - it was part of the torture that the Nazis designed, as they thought they could never be held accountable. The Jews who cooperated maybe got to live a little longer, maybe got a little more food, an extra blanket. It's amazing what the will to survive will do to a human being. And, without those survivors telling their stories, holocaust deniers would not even need to exist. There would be nothing to deny.

Again, the images in this movie are haunting, moving, and should cause one to think and to dig deeper into what we think we know about the holocaust, and about man's inhumanity to man. We may think we know what horror man is capable of. We can only remain aware as long as our eyes remain open - and our hearts remain connected to our souls.

Auschwitz - Inside the Nazi State

5 out of 5 stars Grim and unrelenting realism.......2007-05-27

Prior to watching this dvd, I had read accounts of the true events it depicts, namely the heroic but futile uprising of the crematoria sondercommando at Auschwitz in 1944, during the Germans' frenetic gassing of the half million Jews of Hungary. These men, whom Auschwitz survivor and acclaimed author, Primo Levi, called "the ravens of the crematoria" were all Jews and were kept alive for the grisly work of herding their fellow-Jews into the gas chambers and then burning the bodies in the crematoria ovens. They received privileges denied other Jewish prisoners for carrying out this hellish work but were themselves murdered and replaced after about 3 months because the Nazis considered they knew too much about their heinous crimes. With Dantesque and nightmarish realism the movie depicts the horror of the men's existence, their brutalisation and their simultaneous efforts to cling to a shred of humanity, for example saving the girl who survives the gas,and to make a stand against the monsters who have forced their moral corruption. Also noteworthy is the courage of the Jewish women who smuggled explosives to the men of the sondercommando and who were themselves subjected to hideous torture and subsequent execution.
This is not an easy film to watch, but it helps to lay to rest the oft parroted claim that the Jews of the Holocaust did not fight back at the same time as it reminds us of the barbarism and appalling inhumanity of Nazified Germans in WW2.

5 out of 5 stars The Grey Zone.......2007-03-11

Based on the real-life events in WWII, a special squad of Jewish prisoners, who staged the only armed revolt that would ever take place at Auschwitz. Historical film showing the troubles that prisoners had to deal with in Auschwitz. A bone chilling story.
