On the short list for the "world's toughest place to live" award, Southwest Africa's Namib Desert houses a wealth of intriguing creatures, featured in Jamie Uys's Animals are Beautiful People. As various beasts, bugs, fish, and fowl appear, a soft-spoken narrator pinpoints behaviors that mirror human ones, often inventing whimsical tales meant to inspire chuckles or sighs. A male wart hog, a "homely bachelor," lands a "wife" with a penchant for redecorating his burrow; austere maribou glower like disapproving undertakers; a billowy, nameless fish is called a dizzy blonde. Uys's respect for the harsh lifestyle these creatures endure clearly displays itself amid the comical sound effects and Fantasia-lite melodies that infuse the 90-minute show. The result: a richly informative, beautifully filmed lesson in the power of adaptation and the lush wildlife that inhabits the cradle of civilization. Six years after completing this project, Uys went on to create The Gods Must Be Crazy. (Ages 5 and older) --Liane Thomas

Description

From the creator of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Away in their own mysterious world, far from the prying eyes of people, Africa's animals lead lives of humor and horror, danger and dignity.

5 out of 5 stars a delight to watch.......2007-07-04

A wonderful movie! This is clearly not a biology documentary but, as some books and movies about animals do, it probably does more for nature preservation, than some scientifically accurate movies.

Watch this if you like reading Gerald Durrel's books about animals - the authors voice has the same quiet and kind humor as do Durrel's books.

Jamie Uys made a rare kind of a movie - he makes you like every single creature that you see. By the end of the movie you migth not know a whole lot about their behavioural or food habits (though there is some information of that kind too) but you will be in love with every single living thing there is. Before that movie I only knew two people who could do that - Durrel and Herriot. Durrel could spend a couple of hilarious pages describing a toad so at the end you will feel you admired and loved that toad as much as he did. Jamie Uys definitely shares that ability.

5 out of 5 stars Educational and comedic for everyone.......2007-05-16

This movie doesn't have any particular target audience with it's story. There are so many entertaining parts that it is definately a must have for anyone who likes a good laugh. We sometimes try to seperate ourselves for animals that we forget how much their behaviors are like ours. There are so many scenes in this movie that I was laughin out loud. Although even though I saw this movie several years ago I still remember several scenes. So I really do believe it does more than make you laugh, it educates you on how precious the circle of life is. If you have any remote interest in wild animals or just like to laugh this movie is for you.

5 out of 5 stars YES.......2007-05-04

I love the discovery channel as much as the next person. I find myself engrossed with animals around the world but if you're looking for a dry, fact only account of nature this isn't what you expected. The director of this documentary was also the director (and creator if I'm correct) of the movies "The Gods Must Be Crazy" I and II. If you've seen those movies then you'll understand the humor that underscores this entire show. This is a real documentary complete with amazing footage (breath taking in some parts) however it captures nature with a comic eye. It's old (I belive from the 70's) so don't expect IMAX images but it's absolutely amazing. Children will absolutely love this documentary (and possibly get them interested in more) and the child in you will love it too. As a 20 something I actually set my alarm for 2am to record it when it was playing on HBO a long time ago so you can see, I've gone to great lengths to veiw this amazingly humorous account of the harsh African landscape. If you watch animal documentaries, please get this movie, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A very fun documentary.......2007-04-02

I grew up watching this film over and over, and now my children love it as much as I did. My love for classical music definately began with this film when I was 6 years old. It is very funny and the dry sense of humor will entertain adults and children. Some of the facts may be a bit lost in the humor, but it definitely gives a great over all sense of the Okovango, the Namib and the Kalahari. Other than the Crocodile Hunter, this is the only animal documentary my kids will sit through from beginning to end repeatedly (by their own choice), so that's saying something!

5 out of 5 stars Still great beautiful people.......2007-04-02

Although this movie is very old, it still captures its audience and it can be compare with a lot of movies made recently. The humorous narrator did great and for something this old....it stay a classic!!! i can recommend it.

Take Dawson's Creek, throw in a dash of My So-Called Life and a smidgen of Melrose Place, and you've got Beautiful People. A night-time soap opera on all levels, the series focuses on Lynn Kerr (Daphne Zuniga) and her daughters Karen (Torrey Devitto), 19, who wants to be a model, and Sophie (Sarah Foret), 16, who just wants to fit into the fancy private school where she's known as the poor scholarship kid. Though the show's title could be used to describe the three leading ladies, it actually is the name for the high school's popular clique. Executive producer Paul Stupin worked on Dawson's Creek, and that earlier show's essence is all over this series. Foret could easily pass as Katie Holmes' slightly less glamorous sister, and she utters the same preternaturally mature dialogue as the Creek kids as well. And while the plot lines are never as concise or thoughtful as it was on the Creek, they do have a clumsy charm. The back story to the series is that Lynn moves her girls from New Mexico to New York after her husband has an affair with Karen's best friend. While Karen (a pouty dead ringer for Angelina Jolie) cuts ties with her dad, sensitive Sophie keeps him filled in on their lives with regular emails. That action, ultimately, will force her to choose between her parents. And Melrose Place fans will delight in seeing Zuniga verbally spar with her estranged TV husband Grant Show (her co-star on Melrose). There are some moments in the series that are heavy on the ick factor: an older man's creepy serial killer-like obsession with Karen; Lynn's involvement with her old college sweetheart, who happens to be the father of Sophie's boyfriend; and the clumsy handling of two of the students' sexual insecurities. There are also some inconsistencies in the characters', well, characters.

For most of the 16 episodes--which aired on ABC Family from April 2005 to April 2006--Sophie's friend Annabelle (Kathleen Munroe) harbors a huge crush on their friend Gideon (Ricky Mabe). But after their first makeout session, she rather coldly tells him that it's not working for her. Flash forward a couple episodes and she's pining for him again. Sophie's dream boy Nicholas (Jackson Rathbone) is presented in the beginning as a good boy with some bad friends who tries to appease her nervousness with quips like: "Don't mistake pretension for what's just old fashioned in breeding." Near the end, viewers are supposed to be convinced he's a nasty boy who takes innocent girls to sex parties. Not buying it. The casting director also could've done a better job of hiring peripheral actors who actually young enough to play high school students. Instead, many of the so-called teenagers look as old as the teachers. Though not up to par with the more sophisticated My So-Called Life or Dawson's Creek, it's more often than not melodramatic and fun. --Jae-Ha Kim

Video Description

When 16-year-old Sophie (Foret) receives a scholarship to attend Brighton, a prestigious private school in New York City, she and her sister convince their mother to move from their small hometown in New Mexico. Sophie quickly finds it hard to fit in at a high school ruled by a popular clique of wealthy society kids known as the "beautiful people," while older sister Karen (DeVitto) looks to break into New York's fast-paced and cutthroat modeling world. As Lynn sets out to start her life over with a job at a high fashion boutique, she and her daughters find themselves in a city full of challenges where they embark on a journey of self-discovery.

4 out of 5 stars I love New York.......2007-04-08

This is a kind of fresh season, not too hollywood but still sofisticated

1 out of 5 stars They canceled Beautiful People!.......2007-01-30

Abc Family has canceled Beautiful People. I mean why would they say first season it's like saying there is going to be a second season. I loved this show. Abc Family even canceled Three moon over milford one of my favorites.

They brought back Wildfire, going to bring back Kyle Xy, even falcon beach, but why kick off the others. I love beautiful people, and three moons over milford, I hope they change there mind!
I am so mad I give this product 1 star
the show gets a 5

5 out of 5 stars Gilmore Girls it's not, but still worthwhile.......2006-12-21

Initially I purchased this DVD set thinking that I would be viewing a low-grade version of 'Gilmore Girls' set in New York City. But within the first several minutes of the pilot I realized that I was mistaken. But what I discovered was a quirpy/inspired series that, while not original, is definately interesting and worth checking out.

The show follows the Kerr family as mother Kerr moves herself and her two teenage daughters (one 16 the other 19) to New York City to start their lives over after she catches her husband in bed with another woman. From here the series follows the three woman as they reajust to living completely new/different lives in the big city.

5 out of 5 stars Great show!.......2006-11-30

I really enjoy this show! Its fun and well worth the money!
I actually havent got it yet, but I hope I will soon!
It has mother daughter relationships, and how much this family grows together over this period of time!
I recommend it to anyone that likes Gilmore Girls!

4 out of 5 stars Even though this show is not overly original, it is engaging, and even addictive :).......2006-08-14

"Beautiful people" is an entertaining series that you might like, specially if you were a fan of "Dawson Creek". Even though this show is not overly original, it is engaging, and even addictive :)

There are three main characters: a mother, Lynn Kerr (Daphne Zuniga) and her two daughters, Karen (Torrey DeVitto) and Sophie (Sarah Foret). Lynn has been left by her husband, and is ready for a change. After her younger daughter, Sophie, earns a scholarship to study in a very good school in New York City, she is convinced by both Sophie and Karen that moving to NYC is an excellent idea. Lynn wants to be a fashion designer, Karen wants to find success as a model, and Sophie is eager to study in a new school. But will they be able to fit with the "beautiful people"? And do they want to fit, or just be themselves and find a way to fulfill their dreams in that way?

I should point out that the title of this series, "Beautiful people", makes reference to some of the kids Sophie finds at her new school. However, and in a more general sense, I think it is also an allusion to a different kind of environment, an environment the three girls are not used too and are not totally convinced they like. On the other hand, NYC is also an enchanting city that offers them lots of opportunities to find success, friendship and love, chances they will jump at, even though not always wisely.

What will happen? Well, watch this dvd and find out. I can tell you I enjoyed this series, and that I plan to watch the second season, to be released this year. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful People.......2006-08-01

Its a real good movie, I first saw it on the IFC channel...had to have it...if you watch it think out side the box and dont be to transcendental, it is a low budget high quality film

4 out of 5 stars Is Life Beautiful?.......2005-06-02

I was first introduced to this film when I read New York Times' film critic A.O. Scott call it one of the best films of 2000. After all this time I have only now seen it.

Something that occured to me as watching the film was that the London presented here could very easily be mistaken for New York. London is presented as a melting pot of different cultures and social classes and by the film's end most of these people will have met and realize the impact they have on each other's lives. That may sound a little corny, but Jasmin Dizdar has not directed a tear-jerker. The movie brims with power. Dazdar is able to make the camera come to life with rapid edit shots and the frantic movement of the camera as it tries to pick up every last detail. You could compare the style of the film to Jan Hrebejk's recent film "Up and Down" or the films of Emir Kusturica ("Underground", "Black Cat, White Cat"). But the content of the film is very different from their work. In that sense it is closer to American films such as Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" or John Sayles "City of Hope".

The movie has no real focal character it intersects various stories which involve an upper-class nurse, Portia (Charlotte Coleman) who comes from a stuck-up family. Portia falls in love with a poor foreigner Pero (Edin Dzandzanovic). Then we have a doctor Mouldy (Nicholas Farrell) who is having legal trouble with his wife over who gets custody of their children. And there is a story about a reporter who has gone to Bosnia, I should mention the film takes place in 1993 during the fall of the former Yugoslavia, and when he returns home finds that he wants to do more to help but simply doesn't know what. Finally there is some comedy thrown in as a croat (Faruk Pruti) and a serb (Dado Jehan) find themselves constantly fighting, both verbally and physically, to the point where they both end up in a hospital.

But perhaps you're wondering what exactly do these stories have to do with one another? What I think the film is about is, people should try and come together despite our differences. In the end we are all really the same. We all have hopes and dreams and want the best out of life. Or as Dr. Mouldy says at the end of the film "If life works out just a tiny bit in your favor it can be beautiful." That is what this film is about.

"Beautiful People" I thought took a few misteps. I didn't feel the comedy should have been involved. And if Dizdar really felt the need for it,it should have been approached differently. It doesn't seem to gel with the rest of the story. But overall I think people will enjoy this film. It is worth going out and renting.

There is also something of sarcasm to the film's title as Scott rather aptly pointed out. The movie is not about "beautiful" people at all. It is about racism, intolerance and war, these subjects are anything but "beautiful" and never show people in a "beautiful" way. Scott makes the comparison to Mike Leigh's "Life Is Sweet" and how that title is also misleading.

I may not like the film as much as Scott did, but "Beautiful People" is a very ambitious film that pretty much succeeds at what it wanted to present.

Bottom-line: Director Jasmin Dizdar has set a pretty high bar for the film and it delivers. This is one of those "slice of life" film but it is not preachy or overly sentimental.

3 out of 5 stars A Darker "Love Actually".......2005-03-03

Let me just start by saying that this is not a film for youngsters due it being rather graphic at times.
Beautiful People just like Love Actually, brings to the screen a set of parallel stories that take place in London, England, involving an unlikely group of people who are linked to each other in varying ways. The actors carry out their performances well, though nothing extraordinary.
In addition, it is much more tuned towards a European audience as opposed to an American one (this is not Hollywood).
The plot is very witty, very well thought through, though it is slow at times and it could definitely have been executed better.
It combines elements of comedy (surprisingly) and realistic drama (for a change), making this a movie worth watching.
In short, Beautiful People is a movie that will make you both laugh and cry, and in the end leave you with enough "food for thought" as they say.

5 out of 5 stars one of those movies that could change your life.......2004-06-01

atleast it will for a little while.

Makes you think about how lucky you are. And I know you are lucky if you are reading this. You are must be part of the economically privileged - and that is anyone who lives in a first world country and is not involved in war.

Inspirational

4 out of 5 stars Good, very good.......2003-03-30

... it's about these people in the london area that seem like they're not related directly but indirectly they are. The movie starts off pretty slow as you try and figure out who's who. It wasn't until the guy that took heroin and accidently got on a plane that took him to the war in bosnia instead of holland did the movie really [draw] me in. By the end of it you feel like you're a part of everyone's life. It's truly a very good film. The only reason it gets 4 stars is because of the slow start.
