When hard-drinking Hubert Flynn comes home late and bedraggled for the umpteenth time, he wakes up transformed into the rat he truly is. But the movie Rat takes this event in stride; Flynn's family is upset and surprised, but somehow they recognize the appropriateness of this turn of events--Flynn's wife Conchita (Imelda Staunton from Shakespeare in Love, Sense and Sensibility, and Antonia and Jane) even takes a smug satisfaction in her husband's fate. When a writer arrives and offers to help Conchita write a bestselling book about this odd turn of events, she seizes on the opportunity to squeeze something positive from the man who's made her so miserable--and in the process, becomes a bit of a rat herself. Rat takes a little while to establish its comic tone, but once it settles into a kind of Irish magic realism, the deadpan reactions become strikingly funny. For example, when Conchita takes the rat to visit Flynn's favorite tavern, one barfly blithely comments, "Still, all things considered, he's not looking so bad." Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father, The Usual Suspects) plays Flynn in his brief time as a nonrat. All the performances are excellent; particularly charming is Kerry Condon as Flynn's daughter, who desperately tries to preserve some sense of dignity for her altered dad. With its whimsical humor and sardonic streak, Rat is no doubt destined to become a cult favorite. Fans of Monty Python will appreciate the movie's sly verbal wit. --Bret Fetzer

The 26 episodes in this three-disc set are less than half an hour long each, but The Rat Patrol packs a lot into every one of them. There's action and adventure galore as our Yank heroes and their German foes chase each other across the parched dunes of the North African desert. There are Nazi bad guys biting the, er, sand, lots of stuff getting blown up, daring rescues and other dangerous missions, moral dilemmas, torture, beautiful women of various persuasions, perfect hair
even a guest appearance by Jack Jones, who croons to his Nazi captors (in "The Do-Re-Mi Raid"). At the heart of it all are the four members of the Rat Patrol, led by intrepid Sgt. Sam Troy (Christopher George). These boys will do anything, from transporting weapons and munitions to stealing diamonds and secret Nazi documents, from saving innocent Arabs to delivering babies; and somehow, no matter how many times they're pursued, ambushed, shot at (and occasionally wounded), and captured, they always emerge relatively unscathed. At times, the Rats seem to be carrying on a private turf war with their principal nemesis, Hauptmann Hans Dietrich (Hans Gudegast, who, as Eric Braeden, would later find stardom on The Young and the Restless); in several episodes, Troy and Dietrich, a character refreshingly free of the usual Nazi stereotyping, even declare a temporary truce when it suits their mutual needs. It's all consistently entertaining, not to mention fat-free--given the time constraints, there's precious little room for sub-plots or sideshows. The writing's good, the acting's good enough, the production values are first-rate (every installment is in color, which was unusual in the mid-'60s, when these episodes were produced), and the vibe is reasonably authentic. Bottom line: though it lasted for just two seasons, The Rat Patrol ranks as one the better World War II TV dramas, and even without bonus features, this set is a treat. --Sam Graham

Childhood Heroes.......2007-07-05
I loved this series when it originally aired. It provided me with 5 major heroes and surrogate father figures. It also emphasized foreign languages so much, that it inspired me to take every language my high school had to offer: French, Spanish, German. And I would have taken Italian or Arabic given a chance. Old World War II films with German and other languages did provide inspiration to keep studying after The Rat Patrol went off the air. I am very disappointed that these DVD's did not subtitle the foreign language portions in the original languages and translate underneath. Subtitles that say "Speaking German," "Speaking Spanish," etc. just don't cut it. I don't remember enough to understand the German, and I would dearly love to know what Dietrich and Moffit were actually saying. (I would actually buy them again if this was added in the future.)
Seeing both seasons now after so many years, I am impressed with the quality of acting and the characterizations. They are of high quality. There are lots of historical issues and other things you could nitpick, but this is entertainment, not documentary or biography, and the series is highly enjoyable anyway.
Each episode (mission) is also a morality play in it's own way. Back in those days we Americans identified ourselves as the decent people who did not torture people in interrogations, unlike the evil Germans. How far we have fallen today from that today.
Good entertainment. I loved it at ten, and I love it now.
The RAT patrol!!!.......2007-06-30
I haven't seen this since it was on T.V. in the 60's,... God I'm old! The begining always started with a booming voice "The RAT patrol! In Technocolor!" (I loved how the announcer always emphasized "RAT!") This show had what you needed, action, explosions, chases, guys who could accessorise in desert dress. Who cares about historical accuracy! They said, "Lets make a show with a lot of guns and movement!" It was the predassesor to the Tela-Tubbies, no actual food valu, just the creamy goodness of the Twinkies center. Entertainment for guys who thought jumping a jeep 50 feet off a sand dune with a .50 Cal. blazing away was COOL! By the way, the story goes that the man who performed that stunt, shown at the beginning of every show, knocked out every single one of his front teeth when his face slammed into the .50 grip... Something to look for. Why do I think it rates a 5? It couldn't take itself too seriously, so it didn't, and guys just aren't as cool as that anymore. Like I tell my wife, "The older I get, the better I was." This is the "A-Team" with DEATH!
Even Better Than Season One!.......2007-06-16
I must admit, I was counting the days until the estimated delivery of this DVD. The packaging and covers were already opened before I made it through my front door, and the next several hours were spent gleaming through all 26 episodes on the 3 enclosed DVDs.
I must say, I liked the second season of the Rat Patrol better than the first for several reasons. Foremost, the Germans appear to have spent their time wisely in the desert because they can actually hit the broad side of a barn now. There were at least 3 episodes where the Patrol's jeeps are the vehicles seen doing flip flops after being hit by enemy fire, and all of the Rat Patrol members get shot this season. Secondly, the series seems to have found its stride and matured more. Hauffman Dietrich doesn't just stand around with a frown on his face after being upped by Sergeant Troy, he's mad as hell and not taking it anymore. Although many of the snappy dialogues between the two are missing from this season, we get a deeper look into Dietrich's character even to the extent of discovering he is capable of killing one of his own comrades.
Along the same thread, the second season seems more "darker" and realistic when compared to the first. Both sides are definately "not ready to make nice" and the stress is showing. Troy's nicotine habit has noticably increased, Hitchcock's characteristic smile is seldom seen, Moffitt is apologizing more, and Tully actually disappears for four episodes, replaced by various stand-ins. Also, in spite of requests for translation of German in the subtitles, the powers-that-be have only added useless captions like "Speaking in German", "Speaking in Arabic", "Man gasping for air", okay, maybe not the last one, but don't expect any difference here. However, on the positive side, Tully's haircuts are now making him look like a twenty year old, and the orange hair dye is gone. There are also more scenes taking place by the ocean, more German and Allied villains to love or hate depending on your preference, and hardly any episodes so hokey that they can only envoke shaken heads and rolled eyeballs.
If you bought season one and thought it was great, you will not be disappointed with season two, although if you are it will probably be because of slightly fewer episodes and the fact there is no season three. We can only wonder what and where the series would have gone had it been renewed in an hour-long format as was originally planned for the next season. People have consistantly criticized the lack of character development in the series due to its half-hour episodes, but I got to know each character intimately. Whether that happened from watching all 58 episodes, appreciating the fine acting or a combination of both is debatable I guess. I just enjoy having a permanent reminder of childhood TV viewing days around the house now.
Captain Dietrich and The German Afrika Korps Face Another Battering.......2007-04-01
The 1950's and 1960's produced a lot of stories about special Commando
operations in the Second World War. Examples are "The Bridge on the River Kwai", "The Guns of Navarone", "Where Eagles Dare", "Force 10 From Navarone" and even stories involving the Royal Air Force like "633 Squadron". This series, "The Rat Patrol" was produced to take advantage of this interest. This series is based on real-life groups like the "Long Range Desert Group" who harassed the Germans behind their lines in North Africa. Although this series was made by Americans, it should be pointed out that it was the British who really developed Commando operations to a high degree. This was due to several factors, one being that Britain was traditionally a Naval power and did not have a large standing army, so they had to get the maximum out of the limited forces they had, thus they encouraged their commandos to be bold by giving them a lot of independence, and secondly, the trauma due to the high casualties of the First World War gave the British the incentive to try to damage the enemy in indirect ways and not just throw massed armies at them frontally. Thus, although these North African Commando groups were mostly British while this series was American, they included a British commando (portrayed well by actor Gary Raymond) into the Rat Patrol as homage to the real leaders in this field. What is important is that
we see the real-life-type dedication of the group, led by actor Chris George, to aggressively carry out their mission, almost without regard to the risk.
Regarding the series itself, I found the quality of the episodes improved
as the first season wore on, yet there were numerous problems. The half-hour format didn't allow many potential stories and characters to develop. In real-life, Captain Dietrich, their perpetual nemesis, would have been shot for cowardice on more than one occasion as he let the Patrol get the best of him even though his men greatly outnumbered them. In real life, much of the "German" army in North Africa was really made up of Italian soldiers, but we almost never see them. One of the members of the Patrol, Hitchcock, insists on wearing a bright red hat (I presume in order to give him "character"), whereas everyone else, on both sides wears grey-brown uniforms which blend in over the surroundings. It is comical seeing him peer over sand dunes with that hat which could be easily seen by the enemy! Because this was American TV, even though
thousands of rounds of ammunition are fired at them by the Germans, they are almost never hit, and if they are, it is never fatal, which of course, is not the nature of war (compare this with the more serious series "Combat" where Americans do get killed in the series).
Having said this, I find the series quite entertaining with a lot of exiciting stunt work, and although the
show is, as I said , not "realistic", the types of missions the show depicts were frequently true-life, and in addition to being entertained,
the viewer does get at least a partial idea of what the free-flowing
war in North Africa was like.

Veteran TV writer/director Tom Gries (East Side/West Side, Helter Skelter) created this action-packed drama about a four-man commando team (three Americans and one British) battling the German Army's Afrika Korps in World War II. Though primarily a vehicle for adventure fans, The Rat Patrol benefited from smart scripting (Larry Cohen and Richard Landau both penned stories for the series) that refused to paint the German antagonist, Capt. Dietrich (well played by Hans Gudegast, who's better known today as Eric Braeden), as a stock Nazi heel; in fact, Christopher George's Sgt. Sam Troy and Dietrich occasionally partnered up to combat a common foe, as in the series' fifth and tenth episodes ("The Chain of Death Raid" and "The Moment of Truce Raid," both of which are included in this four-disc set), which pit them against Arab fighters. Other highlights from the 1966-67 debut season include "The Kill or Be Killed Raid" (Gary Raymond's Moffitt must impersonate a German soldier to find a map to a hidden water source), "The Wildest Raid of All" (the Rat Patrol's plan to capture an important Nazi general goes awry), and "The Blind Man's Bluff Raid" (the Germans impersonate an American unit to trick a sunblinded Troy into revealing the Rat Patrol's location), but all 32 episodes deliver plenty of action and excitement. Unfortunately, no extras are included in the set. --Paul Gaita

Watch four men in two Jeeps take on Rommel's entire Afrika Corps!.......2007-05-30
Well, just about...but it is all in good fun here in this action-packed series short on dialogue, but filled with lots and lots of explosions! Episodes are only 25-30 minutes, so there is not a lot of plot development, but some characterizations are worthy of note.
Christopher George's rather pedestrian and one-dimensional portrayal of Sgt. Sam Troy, the American commander of this band of intrepid heroes is pitted against quick-tempered, Hauptmann Hans Dietrich of Hitler's elite Afrika Corps, expertly played by then "Hans Gudegast"--actually, distinguished actor Eric Braeden, better known for his role as millionaire corporate titan, Mr. Victor Newmann, in the long-running soap opera, "The Young and the Restless."
Braeden should be easily recognizable to sci-fi fans for his roles in the unintentionally funny "Escape from the Palanet of the Apes" (1971), and the critically-acclaimed "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970), where Braeden, a computer scientist must prevent the his creation's bid for global domination--a computer that takes over our Western nuclear defenses.
Other characters in this series are pretty unremarkable and altogether forgettable. Christopher George would later go on to virtual obscurity save for a view guest appearances on "Police Story" during the 70's and several truly disgusting horror films during the 1980's including the disturbing and repellant "Pieces" (1980).
Created by Tom Gries who directed the excellent Western "Will Penny" (1968), the series reflects the the filmmaker's liberal sensibilities of the Vietnam era when it was made depicting, at times, Dietrich and Troy joining forces (yes!)against blood-thirsty Bedouin tribes and black market munitions salesmen. And if you can suspend some realism, the series is a fun and rather enjoyable romp thru WWII. Just don't take it too seriously and try not to laugh when you see the Nazis using American tanks and vehicles--especially WWII surplus American half-tracks. And if the incidental music sounds awfully familiar to that of the Joseph Stefano's "Outer Limits" it should be; both were composed by the talented Dominic Frontiere.
Rat Patrol.......2007-05-14
DVD is very nostalgic. Used to watch it as a kid and now I got my son hooked on it. Waiting for the studio to release the second season.
Rat Patrol (Ratas Del Desieto).......2007-05-11
Yes, in spanish. I saw the show in Puerto Rico (1976) at 4:00 PM. Love the show, and gave me the motivation to go-Army. My favorite. Also the Patton movie is my favorite. :^)
GREAT 60'S TV.......2007-03-25
Great quality reproduction. Very entertaining and clean tv.The Americans/Allies are clearly the good guys! The military vehicles, weapons and equipment are not always accurate but only a history buff would notice.I plan to buy season two.
Rat Patrol--The First season.......2007-03-12
I really liked Rat Patrol as I was growing up, so, when I found it was out on DVD I felt like I was in 7th heaven. The songs, the people, the plots all music to my eyes. Now, if they just keep bringing out the old shows there will be something good to watch instead of all those sick reality shows on regular tv.

George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this 1988 comedy that gives star Chevy Chase one of his better-quality vehicles. Chase plays a New York sportswriter who turns to the country for a simpler, happier way of living. He discovers, of course, that things don't work out that way. Hill's usual touch with comic timing, tone, and dialogue give Chase a rare career opportunity to be part of something a little classier than most of his other movies; but Funny Farm nevertheless has its share of so-what gags. Still, the film's overall tone is winning and laid-back, and it makes for nice escapist fare. --Tom Keogh

Modeled after 1963's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Jerry Zucker's Rat Race lacks the irreverence of Zucker's 1980 hit Airplane! but has enough chuckles to make it an agreeable time-killer. Like Mad, Mad, Mad..., it employs a huge ensemble of comedy stalwarts, assembled by an eccentric hotelier (pearly-toothed John Cleese) to race from Las Vegas to New Mexico for a $2 million jackpot. With a backstage gambling subplot, Rowan Atkinson's Italian-geek lunacy, Seth Green's slacker antics, and some nicely understated work from SCTV alumnus Dave Thomas, the movie has almost as many highlights as clunkers, and Zucker's embrace of easy gags and traditional slapstick will tickle anyone's old-fashioned funny bone. Other ingredients are hopelessly stale: Whoopi Goldberg's frantic mugging, Cuba Gooding's latter-day Stepin Fetchit, "mature" humor that compromises the movie's broad appeal, and the assumption that crashing vehicles are inherently hilarious. Lamentable decisions, perhaps, but Rat Race maintains a pleasantly altruistic spirit. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Replaced my worn out disc........2007-05-07
Loved the movie so much that we wore ours out, and we needed a new one. Fast delivery, so we are very happy.
Slow start but funny movie.......2007-01-23
I watched this movie because I was assured by someone whose judgment on comedy I trust implicitly that it was worth watching. Otherwise I almost surely would have given up, because it takes far too long for the story to get off the launchpad. (John Cleese and Dave Martin are both entirely wasted in their roles. A real shame.)
But when it does take off, it becomes a Roman candle and burns very brightly indeed. There's a certain scene where all of the dull preliminaries are clearly over, and you see a couple of knuckleheads come up with what must be one of the very worst examples of problem-solving in human history. The result wass (for me) beyond funny. It was nearly stroke-inducing, I laughed so hard. And in this scene, as with several others, it wasn't just the extreme gag (which was definitely funny), but also the performances from the actors, who strive to maintain calm in the face of the rising tide of chaos and insanity that is, after all, pretty much of their own making.
The movie continues to encounter a few bumps and drags even after it's gotten underway. There was one scene in particular (involving a Seinfeld alum) that my friend thought was priceless, but I felt like it was a rehash of a gag I'd seen several times before. When I saw the premise, I knew exactly how it would end up. But there were still plenty of solid laughs for me, and for the most part, once the film gets rolling, it maintains a furious comedic pace which at times reaches up and touches the truly manic. The screenwriters came up with some really original gags and then played them to the extreme.
The movie exhibited a curious symmetry in that the end was dull and mechanical and not at all funny, as if they felt the need to bring the movie back to the tedium of the beginning. But I'm talking about only the last brief scene. (Apparently the producer owed a favor to a lame 90's rock band.) It's just unfortunate that the movie ended with a clunk instead of a bang.
Not Worth Your Time.......2006-10-16
Vegas - a city where millions go hoping to get rich. And for nine lucky people, that just might come true. While playing the slots, each of these people won a special gold coin inviting them to lunch. At the lunch, they learn they have been selected to participate in a race for $2 million dollars. All they have to do is be the first to get to a locker in the train depot in Silver City, New Mexico.
Naturally, everyone is skeptical at first. But what if it is true? No one can walk away from that possibility, and they all begin to race for the money. But set backs in the form of airport closures, car wrecks, and cows stand in their way. Who will get there first?
The more important question to ask is, does the audience care? In my case, the answer is no. I kept watching, waiting for the movie to get better, but it never did. There were a few truly laugh out loud moments, but most of the movie fell flat.
The biggest problem it had is the lack of character development. With a running time of just under two hours, there isn't time to get to know all the characters. Since I didn't care, I didn't find their predicaments funny.
Then there is the climax. Instead of building on everything that had come before, it took a turn out of nowhere that wasn't even that funny. It was more of an anti-climax that really made me feel like I had wasted my time.
The few funny moments in this movie aren't worth watching the rest of the movie to see. Instead of wasting your time here, watch the classic that inspired it, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.
Laugh Out Loud.......2006-06-11
This movie is a hilarious laugh out loud movie - every second is filled with humor! The cast was amazing - everyone fit their roles. The movie is filled with wacky twists and turns, and the ending is something that no one expects. The theme song to go with the movie is very catchy, I loved it.
A treat for a Saturday matinee.......2006-05-14
Top comedians - Mr. Bean, John Cleese (Fawlty Towers), Whoophi Goldberg and Kathy Najimi(Sister Act), Cuba Gooding Jr. to name a few; plus a lot of actions and fast, rythmic songs to match with it, the movie offers a wonderful past time for a Saturday afternoon.
What I like best is the beginning, when the 6 groups knew of the race (very much like the reality show amazing race) to be the first to reach the 001 locker at a New Mexico train station for 2 million USD, they expressed disbelief and intention of not joining the race. How fast they changed their minds! The veteran comedians saved the movie from being a cliche.
Though the ending is formulaic, the story plot is not boring and the songs inspiring, especially the opening theme song. Among its kind, Rat Race manages to be refreshing and entertaining. Perfect for a matinee.

Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann has specialized in making counter-cultural documentaries since 1978, and Tales of the Rat Fink is his masterpiece. Rarely has the combination of technique and subject matter been presented with such symbiotic perfection, and Mann's tribute to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth will appeal to anyone who recalls the glory days of hot rods and custom cars. Roth pioneered customizing in the late '50s, taking his cue from the legendary Von Dutch (whose automotive pinstripes "flowed like jazz") to become the first hot-rodder to sculpt custom cars out of fiberglass, the first to airbrush custom "monster" designs on T-shirts, and the inventor of Rat Fink, the "anti-Mickey Mouse" adopted as the drooling mascot of rodders, surfers, model-building hobbyists and assorted misfits throughout the '60s. Roth's best-known custom cars--The Outlaw, The Beatnik Bandit, Mysterion and others--remain timeless classics of southern California's custom-car culture, and they're all shown here on dazzling display.
It's a pity Roth (1932-2001) didn't live to witness Mann's exquisite collaboration with animator Mike Roberts, whose dynamic contributions bring Rat Fink to life in all his wretched glory. John Goodman splendidly narrates as a posthumous Roth, looking back at his creations as numerous pop-cultural icons (Ann-Margret, the Smothers Brothers, and author Tom Wolfe, who first brought Roth to the world's attention) lend their voices to custom cars that "talk" with flashing headlights, similar to (but more reverent than) Pixar's Cars. It's a perfect way of honoring Roth, the culture he created, and the enduring legacy of his "weirdo" ingenuity. Mann's playful tribute makes it perfectly clear that Roth and Rat Fink embody a creative spirit that will live forever. --Jeff Shannon

The Beginning.......2007-05-24
In the second place, Hugh Jackman is beautiful. In the first place he is a fine actor. And Deborra-Lee Furness does her usual masterful job of developing character. The film introduces us to prison life in Australia showing anguish, and working at the job of living. I'm hoping the rest of the series continues this, and is soon available for viewing. I'm told this is based on true events, and that the psychologist was disbarred because of the relationship. Also nice to see fine drama beyond what the U. S. offers.
Before He Was Wolverine.......2007-04-17
Before he was Wolverine, Hugh Jackman appeared in a gritty prison drama on Australian TV called "Correlli". The Rat Tamer is the first episode of the series to released on DVD.
The Rat Tamer refers to Dr. Louisa Correlli, the new psychologist who has recently begun working at Blackstream Prison. Correlli is played by Deborra-Lee Furness, who must have made quite an impression on Hugh because they were married a year later and are still married to this day!
The story follows Dr. Correlli as she tries to help a troubled prison guard named Costa who's stressed almost to his limit, as well as a new inmate by the name of Kevin Jones (played by Hugh Jackman). Jones arrives at Blackstream beaten so badly that is has caused some brain trauma and affected his motor skills. It's clear that he was somehow assaulted during his transfer, but because of the extent of his injuries, it's not clear why or how they occured.
At the heart of the story is the personal conflict between Jones and Costa. When their paths cross, the guard becomes obsessed with the memory of a terrible tragedy that happened to his best mate and is fixated on the notion that Jones was somehow involved.
I believe "Correlli" is only the second screen appearance of Hugh Jackman's career, but his trademark charisma and intensity are already there...and I just love that Aussie accent! The Rat Tamer is intriguing and compelling enough to want to see the rest of the series...it leaves you wanting more and wondering...what happens next?
Hugh Jackman's first professional appearance.......2006-09-23
I saw this as the pilot episode of a prison drama series from Australia TV called CORRELLI. It focused on life in prison, mainly viewed from the eyes of a prison psychologist named Louisa Correlli. The whole series was a gripping and realistic dramatization of various lives of prisoners and the people who administered their penal sentences. Hopefully, the rest of the episodes will also be released on DVD as the entire series is quite excellent.
This first episode marked Hugh Jackman's first professional appearance, direct from acting school. Even at that time, Hugh had already shown a range of dramatic talent that will mark some of his future work, such as his early award-winning role in Erskineville Kings and some of his 2006 film releases ( The Fountain and The Prestige). To fans of Hugh Jackman, this film is also interesting because the actress who played the role of Louisa Correlli very effectively is Deborra Lee Furness, now Mrs. Hugh Jackman.
The episode released on this DVD is a compelling drama of prison life and what it does to those affected by such personal tragedies.

Hey, chicky baby--it's a cuckoo thing, ya dig? You, too, will find yourself speaking Rat Pack lingo after watching this made-for-HBO biopic about that brief and shining moment when Camelot met Hoboken-on-the-Pacific. The film does a good job of capturing the heady, anything-goes feel of the late-1950s, early-1960s era when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and their running buddies ruled Hollywood, Las Vegas, and, it seemed, the world. The story centers on Sinatra's relationship with John F. Kennedy (William F. Petersen) before and after he was elected president. It's not particularly flattering to either man, as Sinatra pimps Kennedy into a relationship with Judith Campbell, at the same time she was the favorite consort of mob boss Sam Giancana. Ray Liotta is a forceful Sinatra (though it's not much of an impression); Joe Mantegna has the look and the sound of the surprisingly sober Dean Martin; and Don Cheadle does a great job as the racially conflicted Sammy Davis Jr. Not great cinema but it's never less than engrossing. --Marshall Fine
Description
They had ' 'the world on a string' '. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, known as ' 'The Rat Pack' ' set the style and the pace for 1950's America as the nation roller coastered its way towards the swinging '60s. But can the high life last forever? If Frank and the boys have their way by electing John F. Kennedy, the party has only just begun.
Customer Reviews:
Sinatra's Beautiful voice.......2007-02-05
The Rat Pack is a movie about the love of glory and success, and the deceptions and pain that comes with it.
It tells the story of the Rat Pack, their success and problems in life and on the stage, the Untouchable Frank Sinatra and his climb to power through the mob and his political connection with The Kennedy's, his persistence and loyalty to his friends, his love to Eva Gardner and his deceptions in life.
A great entertaining movie with some good true history; perfect acting, with great sceneries from the 50' and the 60's not to mention the beautiful costumes and cars of that period.
The quality of the DVD is also perfect; no extra features unfortunately.
Recommended.
Note: After I watched this movie, I got involved in all Sinatra's music which I never was. Great music with a great voice.
awesome!.......2006-08-11
I love, love, love this movie! I highly recommend it to any Rat Pack fan. The special features are horrible, though. I was hoping for better.
A swing(er) and a stand up triple........2006-01-17
"Rat Pack" was a fantastic movie. Ray Liotta, in the final scene of the movie, conveys as close to heartache as one can get when he's recording "One For my Baby". Sinatra's always been known to be one of the only singers that can make the listener feel all the "Electric Heartache" in his songs. To me, the final shot of Liotta with obvious pain and sorrow in his face finishing the song and fading to black...that is the mark of a great film. This is one of my all time faves.
Considering the loss of JFK (at least per Peter Lawford's untimely news about staying with Bing Crosby), Ava's eventual departure, and the Rat Pack's "Heydays" pretty much behind them, Frank knows it was time to move on.
There are a quite a few Rat Pack Tribute tours going on throughout the states (and especially Vegas) in a given year, and I'm sure even with HBO's clout, they decided to utilize said Tribunals for this movie's soundtrack.
All the actors (including a pre-CSI William Petersen as then Sen. Kennedy) hold their own against an era and events that would have overwhelmed anyone.
Most of the movie keeps relative hold of the pre- and post-Kennedy election storyline, and also touches on Joe Kennedy's disain for Sammy's interracial relationship, Frank's hiring of a Blacklisted screenwriter, et al.
This is not a history lesson, and since even "Gods and Generals" and other actual events movies are throwing the "actual events" parts out the window, I wouldn't worry about this being a movie that will get the facts straight. It's played for the soundtrack and how some Presidents won elections they shouldn't have. (Hint, hint Liberals)
Could have been a great movie.......2005-11-11
I waited in angst to see this movie when it came out on HBO. I love the Rat Pack and couldn't wait to hear the music. I thought the cast was excellent. The problem was the music for Sinatra, wasn't Sinatra singing.
The result obviously for a fan is pure dissapointment to say the least. Maybe people who don't realize this will like the film and rate it 5 stars. Like I said... could have been a great movie, it just wasn't.
You can't blame the actors. Who are great! Who wouldn't want to have played these parts?
The RAT PACK HBO version.......2005-09-15
I thought it was an excellent movie with equally fine performances from the actors. It was well written and edited so one could really get a sense of what The Rat Pack was like in that particular moment in time. Indeed their talent has not been surpassed. I would like to have seen them in person in Las Vegas but this is a great substitute.

I first saw this DVD through my Blockbuster Online service, I watched it 3 times before returning it. And I'm a young college student with a short attention span. It was really fun!

Very good DVD to find out about The Rat Pack. I have been looking for something that brings me back to that era, and this is the closest.

Another Awesome DVD.......2007-06-14
My son (14 months) loves Lots and Lots of Trains so I was excited to see how he'd do with the firetrucks...he had just as much fun as with the trains. The music, again, is so much fun and there is such great footage of all the parts of firetrucks. While my son was dancing to the music and enjoying what the firetrucks look like, I was actually learning something. These videos are so fun and interesting...I can't wait to see what these guys come out with next!
Lots and Lots of Hot Fun.......2007-05-27
I've always been interested and fascinated by fire trucks ever since I was a small child growing up in the Chicago suburbs. My first experience with a real fire truck came when my parents forgot to blow out a candle at night and it almost burned down our house.
In the middle of the night roaring down the street came a screaming, blazing fire truck with lots and lots of firemen hanging off every ramp. They quickly pulled up to our house and connected hoses and launched huge steel ladders up to the roof. Just watching all this action was exhilarating. It was very exciting but my mom threw a small paper cup of water on the small candle fire to put it out.
Every time I watch this incredible video I'm transported back to a simpler time in my life when my house almost burned to the ground but was saved by my mom and the firemen heroes working that night.
Even if your house was never near burning to the ground like mine was you'll still find this DVD enjoyable and exciting to watch over and over. I just bought 3 more for presents for the grandkids and gave one to my mom. She was the real hero that exciting night. She's told me that she watches the DVD all the time and still finds the roar of those big beautiful red machines heart-pounding and absolutely riveting.
Will your company be coming out with lots and lots of fire hats sometime in the future?
