It pales when compared to its teen-comedy role model (the 1983 classic Risky Business), but you've got to admit that any movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and 24's Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy The Animal, director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. Darker than I expected.......2007-06-15

When I picked up this movie, I was thinking it was going to a smutty comedy along the lines of American Pie / Risky Business / Porky's. It turned out to be a bit darker than I expected, with some not so funny parts and some downright grim realities coupled in with it.

Matt is a stereotypical "nice guy" who has an ordinary high school career, not very popular, not very exciting, and a bit on the dull side. One day, a beautiful girl moves in next door and he is smitten. Much to his surprise, he discovers Danielle is a 19 year old former adult film star. That is, she's every horny teenage boy's dream come true. She's running away from the life, and doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. But she's being stalked by ghosts from the past, her manager is looking to make his investment back and he'll stop at nothing to get her back into his movies. Soon he and his friends propose making their own movie to pay him off once and for all, and even offer some of the other popular boys to be in it. They get many offers, and suddenly things are looking up for Matt.

What a movie like this says about our culture cannot possibly be summed up in a review like this. There are so many layers to this. The porn industry, while it seems exciting and glamourous on the outside, is really a horrifying place where women are mislead, abused, and intimidated into preforming. Danielle wants nothing else but to escape, and she's being stalked by the monsters who have lured her in. Matt sees her on one hand as his ultimate object of desire, and ends up falling for her. (Fiction!) Matt seems to be a nice guy, but he seems to hold this porn star girlfriend closer to him for the fact that she's a former porn star and not just "the girl next door".

Perhaps the most telling of events is when they are going to film the porn movie in the library of their school. When they talk the popular boys into doing it, they jump at the chance thinking that it will enhance their status. And the one who seems the biggest and strongest of them all can't preform. Stuck in the situation, Matt at first volonteers to be the one, but he can't do it. He loves Danielle too much to degrade her again. So his friend volonteers (the biggest laugh of the movie, when he appears on camera with the fencing mask on). And I had the best thought of the entire movie when he did that. I just thought "Wow, what a good friend". Perhaps that was the most noble thing of them all.

A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-05-30

I first rented this so that I would just kill some time. I was expecting a silly movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had to buy it. The acting is excellent and the ages of the actors is very close to the ages of the characters. This is a teenage movie for adults. It has its crazy moments, but in the end it's a love story.

I'm glad that it didn't do well at the box office. If it did, a sequel would been made.

So one night when the wife was away i decided to bring some easy on the eyes, hollywood pap, home with me from the video store where i worked. I picked the girl next door based purely on the picture on the cover. I didn't want something too involving. I had seen the trailer some time before and it seemed to be an 'American Pie' kind of movie....

Well, i was wrong. I sat in amazement the whole length of the movie, dumbfounded that it was so good. SO GOOD!. It takes alot of it's influence from another of my favorites, Risky Business. It's not a remake and it's not a sequel. it's more of an homage. It's far better than if it were a remake. It really is just a joy to watch. I told my wife about it when she got back, and she kind of rolled her eyes and said 'yeah, okay, lets watch it'. An hour and a half later of staring, jaw dropped, at the screen, she turned to me and said just one word: "GENIUS!"

Really, it's up there with Risky Business and Ferris Buellers Day Off. It's a movie about growing up that we can all relate to. This is the kind of movie that changes a persons perspective on life. Amazing cast. Amazing SoundTrack! All over, great film!

The politically correct girl next door........2007-04-23

This movie never gets off the ground, due to "political correctness", i did see it's potential wasted in almost every scene.every scene had the chance to become outragesly funny but never takes off. theres almost no nudity, none by the female lead at all, all punchline and no joke with this movie. typical politically correct movie for these days.

You might think from the title and the commercials this movie is about a super sexy porn star slut...but it's actually the opposite. I really liked how the movie was done to portray the struggles some girls really have to go through in their carrers and mixed it with the toughness of high school.
This is definately a movie i would reccomend to people over like 16 but only if you want to watch a funny movie about the discovering and strength of two people...This movie is the real thing, i enjoyed it and i think many other people could too.

In this movie Hannah, a very weird girl goes around being ignored, she writes letters to this girl, her only friend who never replies back, her parents are never home and this leaves you wondering what is really going on? I wont give any spoilers but see this movie if you love the cheezy acting and fun horror!I laugh everytime! Great twist!

Favorite Part: The boys deaf Mom, and then hannah goes "Your mom makes me want to learn sign language"

A movie that tried to become scary, but failed. Yep, that's what the Ghost Next Door did. It is a rather odd movie. The thing with Goosebumps movies... They never follow the book. Never. It is about a twisted child named Hannah Fairchild. She see's this black ghastly ( to her. But not to me) image. She dials September 11 ( 911). The phone doesn't work. She stupidly runs outside. A kid says boo. She screams. That's the movie. Sorry, but this movie didn't go excellent in my mind. See Chillogy if you want a goosebumps movie!

This movie tell a true story, you can find romance in the strangest places. Most of the stars in this movie I never saw before and I though it was very good, no killings just a very good movie. I have watched it at least six times and my wife has watch it more than once.

I used to be a SUPER ADDICTED romance novel reader back when I was 12 years old. (I'm 26 now) Naturally, I've became cynical through the years so I don't really read romance novels anymore. HOWEVER, a week ago I found out that about this Harlequin romance novels turned into TV movies. I was like WHAAAATT???? Where there hell was I and why didn't I find out about this sooner?! Of course I just had to watch ^_^ I guess I still love my memories of Harlequin romance novels! So what's my review (POSSIBLE SPOILERS) The pacing of the movie was good. There were no boring parts. As I was watching it, I was trying to imagine if I was actually reading the book - you know when the main characters are saying their lines, etc. The female heroine, Hallie, is very pretty. The hero who Hallie ends up with, Steve I think is his name, is cute in an outsdoors rugged kinda way. All the actors were very good and acted well. Now as for the story, I didn't really like the story. I thought the hero, Steve, was pretty ordinary. I don't understand why Hallie didn't end up with her college crush and I agree with the other reviewer. Too many divorces. Ack! In my opinion, how they are able to go from one relationship to the other with a recent divorce is sorta ?? But overall, I'm glad I watched this movie. I don't know how similar the book and the movie is but if it is similar then obviously I just dont like the story and I probably wouldn't have bought the book. Now I plan to watch other Harlequin Romance turned to tv. I'm pretty excited because I liked the plot of Diamond Girl (which I bought) and I'm getting soon hopefully. I also got So hard to forget. As soon as I watch those two, I'll write a review.

As the Clock Ticks.......2005-08-03

Women who have searched for "Mr. Right" and met many a "Mr. Wrong" will find this made for TV 1998 film entertaining, and though a little weak in certain areas of the script, a very strong cast holds the thread of the story together. Leslie Hope as Hallie and Rick Peters as her neighbor Steve are a delight to watch, as both go through the entanglements of relationships gone sour, and some that never get off the ground. Hallie is an architect, along with her friend Donnalee (well played by Sherry Miller), and both try to make a success of their business, as they listen to the clock ticking away in the marriage and children department. They even join a video dating service, with some amusing as well as disastrous results.

Directed by Brad Turner, the film is based on a novel by the prolific contemporary romance author Debbie Macomber. Despite the plot being totally predictable, it is charming and endearing because the characters are decent, warm people, who struggle with the bumps and bruises of life in a way we can understand. This is a "woman's movie" through and through, except I hope no other woman who lives alone has a front door like Hallie's, which doesn't have much in the way of locks or security. Perhaps Toronto, where this was filmed, is a very safe city! Others in the cast include Natasha Greenblatt, Carl Marotte, and Michelle Duquet, and the familiar face of Michael Nouri, who one will remember from as far back as "Flashdance" (1983), and who has the good fortune of becoming even better looking as time goes by. Total running time is 95 minutes.

Stacy is a nice girl. i felt compassion for her as i watched the emotional rollercoaster she clung to ever since she was a little girl.
as this documentary proceeded i started to have an unsettling feeling in my stomach that this was going to turn into one of those unhappy endings where another adult actress takes their life or murdered or some other horrible outcome.
thankfully Stacy survived and retired from 'the business' and is now a talent scout for Penthouse magazine.
one of the central story arcs of her life as revealed in this documentary is her relationship with a man who also works in the adult film world.
i was rooting for them to live happily ever after but after one too many break-ups they call it quits for good.
the examination of how and why their relationship was not to be is sad but enlightening-enabling Stacy to look into herself for the answer.
i'm hoping Stacy is now a happier and less-lonely person.

Would You Be My (Stacy) Valentine?.......2006-03-01

Documentaries -- especially those in the caliber of late night 'Showtime' or 'HBO' infotainment (or 'skinertainment,' as I've heard it called) tend to suffer from one serious shortcoming: it's near impossible to take anyone serious, especially when it comes to having frank and open conversations ON CAMERA relative to the one of the world's most intimate acts: sex ... which does rank just behind love, yes.

However, GIRL NEXT DOOR manages to wiggle around (pun intended) this gray area throughout about 60-70% of the time by concentrating on the life of porn star (legend!) Stacy Valentine, who, quite frankly, is strikingly beautiful with or without clothes, for that matter. The best moments of this exploration of Stacy Baker's life (her real name) deal with Stacy discovering her passion for sex, her passion for working in the sex industry, and her passion for entertaining others. She speaks frankly to the camera in some wonderful moments that give the viewer a look at the psychology many women in the adult film industry must confront ... whether it be overly adoring fans, manufacturing (through plastic surgery) a better body (Stacy, you looked fine BEFORE the implants), and maintaining a positive self-image despite being secretly loved by hundreds of thousands of fans ... and still feeling quite empty. In these moments, you get to know Stacy Baker, not Stacy Valentine, and, call me old-fashioned, but that's the woman any man (or woman) could easily fall head over heels for. Stacy Valentine, on the other hand, steps comfortably into the world of adult business, and it became very hard to distinguish her from any of the other actors and actresses briefly covered in the film.

Also, there are moments in the documentary exploring the life of Stacy Valentine that, clearly, had to have been staged for the purposes of the narrative that explores her brief career on top (yes, pun intended, too). In what appeared to be a largely single camera production, Stacy Valentine walks in and out of scenes that clearly had to be set up for the purposes of pushing the story forward. In moments of desperation, Stacy Valentine lies in the bed pondering the meaning of certain events in her life, and, though I don't doubt Stacy Baker dealt very personally with some of these difficult subjects, they didn't feel quite real. That's a shortcoming that follows many smaller documentaries around, so it's an easy gimme, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Be warned: this film isn't necessarily about titillation, though there are moments I'm sure the most involved viewer will be captivated. This isn't a soft core flick about the life of being a porn star. There are moments of seriousness of the dangers of the work, scenes of honest reflection about facing some of life's unique challenges, even a teary moments between Stacy and her mother chatting about the inevitability of death. For those of you seeking a skin flick, I'm sure Stacy Valentine's library can be found elsewhere (69 of them, to be precise). I don't say that to scare anyone off; I purchased the film based on some recommendations of documentary buffs (I guess there's a pun intended there, too), and, on that level, I found enough to enjoy. I'm no prude; I said she's striking, didn't I? I was pleasantly surprised with this small production, and, if you approach with an open mind, I think you will be, too.

Elisha Cuthbert may not be the first "hot porn star/prostitute with a heart of gold" love story, but it certainly is one of the best. If you're going to sell softcore porn, at least make it an interesting watch. This is just a behind the scenes of a photo shoot they are trying to milk more money out of.
I don't see anyone over 13 enjoying this.
Check out Misty Mundae if you want softcore that's actually entertaining.

This DVD is hot. The girls are so stunning. The camera doesn't waste any time showing us the goods and when we see them we get an eye full. The women are young and sexy and very girl-next-doorish. The feature is made more interesting because of the subsequent interviews of the girls themselves. Hearing the girls talk about themselves while we see them get naked is very arousing! You really do get a different effect when you hear the models talk and move as opposed to just seeing pictures of them in a magazine or on the Internet.
The girls look very comfortable, show no modesty, and you can tell that they are all just having fun.
This is an excellent DVD to watch on a lonely night!

Interesting story line, but acting is flat and characters not very well developed. The actor who plays the immoral doctor is good at being full of fear and guilt, but doesn't have a personality beyond that. Could have been done better.

Henry Czerny plays a married Doctor ,asked by his vacationing neighbours to keep an eye on their nubile teenage daughter,who is being harrassed by a fellow student unable to accept the end of their affair.An affair develops betweem them and she films him getting dressed afterr a sex session,which is somewhat unfortunate as she is shortly afterwards murdered,placing him in an invidious position as he wrestles with both conscience and adesire to protect his freedom,marriage and social standing.

The plot is well worked out although the murderer is easily spotted.Good acting and direction make for a pleasing time passer

I first saw this movie last fall on one of the pay movie channels and enjoyed it. While it certainly is not a work of artistic genius, it's a fun movie to watch late at night and I thought it had sufficient eroticism and suspense to keep me watching. It is the sort of movie that won't require much thinking but it fulfills its purpose of entertaining and I tend to be one that is very critical of the mindless material the movie industry now releases.

Predictable, Boring, and Stupid.......2000-06-28

This movie is predictable right from the start and really stupid in places. The plot is simple enough, middle aged man with pregnant wife becomes infatuated with neighbors' 18 year old daughter. The man has a very brief affair with the girl after which she turns up dead and the man is now a prime suspect. What is stupid about the whole mess is the fact that nobody seems to be suspicious of the girl's boyfriend, someone who had been stalking her before the affair, everyone is more suspicious about the girl's new mysterious lover. To make the entire mess even more unbelievable, the girl took a video of the single night of passion that she had with her neighbour and he now has to get his hands on it.

The movie is also listed as an "Erotic Thriller". Well, there is very little erotic about the movie at all, in fact there are only two semi-sexy scenes in the movie. The first features the girl taking a skinny dip in the pool and the second is the girl and man having sex for the first and only time. Both times the scene is shot in darkness and you cannot see anything worthwhile to suggest any real nudity or eroticism.

The DVD is also very bare bones. There is very little extra on it. My advice, avoid this movie at all cost and instead consider one (or all) of the Poison Ivy movies.

A pleasant , suspenseful surprise.......2000-01-24

I viewed this movie with some trepidation, given the title and the somewhat lurid box art. I've followed Henry Czerny's career with interest, and have found his career choices intriguing, so I thought, what the heck. In brief, I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of performances, production, and particularly the direction. In less talented hands, this could've been movie-of-the-week schlock, but here, it's quite effectively presented. Very little that could be called gratuitous...nicely atmospheric...something of a "neighborhood noir." Again: a pleasant surprise, and kudos to Czerny, an excellent supporting cast (who ARE those guys? ), and a director who bears watching.
