Moving...Memorable...and Music that will haunt you..........2007-02-27

Dicken's story has been retold dozens (if not hundreds) of times, and it's always interesting to see what is emphasized and what is left out. This version is one of the shorter (and therefore more suitable for small children). But the bare bones of the story have been fleshed out by a score that is so memorable and moving that I'm amazed Broadway hasn't taken notice.

It's also a seminal version of the story--many current animators have referenced this production. (I would be very much surprised if Genndy Tartakovsky has never seen it, for instance.) This influence is a tribute to the power the film has over anyone who saw it in childhood.

An added treat is the gorgeous singing voice of Jack Cassidy (known to fans of "Columbo" as one of the two "three-time" villains, and to fans of "The Partridge Family" as the father of David), and the presence of famed Disney (and Boris Badenov!) voice-actor Paul Frees, who contributes the voices of several characters.

I originally wrote about this film on Amazon when only the VHS version was available. What a thrill it is to now own this excellent DVD, which will be subjected to many, many viewings in the years to come.

You just can't beat Mr. Magoo!!.......2007-01-16

For us old timers, Mr. Magoo is timeless. This was the best Christmas present I have given myelf! It was a joy to see my grandchildren's faces, as they watched animation at it's earliest, and loved it. They were so thrilled with it, they called me when it came on television later in the Christmas season, to make sure I got to see it again. You just can't beat Mr. Magoo!

This is an excellent cartoon to show children the true meaning of Christmas, Love, which comes from Jesus who was concieved,not born, on December 25. He was born in september of that same year either 5 or 6 B.C. We don't really know for sure.

Someone got the rather inspired (but ultimately misguided) idea to match Hong Kong action director Stanley Tong with comedy stalwart Leslie Nielsen in this dimwitted live-action Disney version of the vintage cartoon, in which the very nearsighted tycoon bumbles his way into the heist of a giant, priceless ruby known as the Star of Kuristan. The result is an abundance of slapstick humor related to Mr. Magoo's visual impairment (prompting a brief protest during the film's 1997 release by the National Federation of the Blind), and a tired plot involving a lovely jewel thief (Kelly Lynch) who'll stop at nothing to get her stolen jewel back. Of course, Magoo manages to foil the thieves at every turn, even though he's frequently unaware of his unintentional heroics. This standard family fare from Disney (best suited for kids 12 and under) will probably play better on home video, but you'll have to watch and listen closely for the few gags that really pay off. --Jeff Shannon

Mr. Magoo is based on the old TV show about a VERY near-sighted man who always gets into trouble but always manages to squeeze out of it without realizing the danger he's in.
Leslie Neilsen plays Mr. Quincy Magoo, an actor and museum owner. When a jewel is stolen from his museum and he's the prime suspect, Mr. Magoo and his nephew go on a wild quest to get it back, a quest that will take you from the U.S. to Brazil, and many more places. On the way, Magoo is tricked by the jewel theif, a cunning woman named Luanne LeSeur, who will stop it nothing to get the jewel back (and who also happens to kill all of her male accomplices). Along the way, Magoo will ski on an ironing board, mistakingly sandpaper a ckicken, and disguise himself as a Brazilian gangster.
This film is made for kids, but adults will love it too. If you watch Mr. Magoo, get ready for action, suspense, slapstick humor, and laugh-out-loud jokes. It's a comedy the whole family will enjoy!

Laughts for the whole family.......2006-07-21

If you liked the classic cartoon Mr. Magoo you and the family will enjoy this funny movie. Leslie Nielsen plays the part of Magoo just great. He is funny like in his other comedy hits. He sure gets in a mess and danger being near sigted.
This is a good picture the kids will enjoy too.

Not necessarily excellent.......2003-02-20

This was basically your average comedy movie. First half wasn't very funny; second have was hilarious. First of all, Leslie Nielsen plays a great Quincy Magoo, acting like he is blind, and all. Angus, the dog, is a pretty good part, too, though some of the gags near the beginning with Angus didn't really hit the spot. Some jokes hilarious, for example, the chicken scene. Only poor Mr. Magoo could end up sandpapering a boiling chicken!

The other acting wasn't that great, unfortunately. If the other actors hadn't acted like it was so much of a drama, and treated it more like a comedy, it could've turned out a little better. I would recommend this for lovers of comedy.

Recommended for ages 6 and up. Rated PG for mild language (hardly noticeable) and some action sequences.

This movie may be a bit scary for younger children, because of some of the gun fighting, but this is lightened up by the near-sightedness (or is it pure stupidity?) of Magoo. Younger children will enjoy the silly slapstick comedy.

We really liked the movie, the kids all love it, they find it very funny. We have seen the original Mr. Magoo cartoons and enjoyed them. This movie is as funny as the cartoons.

Very Funny!!!.......2002-11-04

It is indeed very interesting and amusing to see the cartoon Mr. Magoo 'come to life' acted out by non other than the great comedian Leslie Nielsen. I burst out laughing a few times watching this movie, for example, the part when Mr. Magoo was trying to prepare the 'chicken dish' for the lovely but fatal Prunela (Kelly Lynch). He was watching a 'cooking' program when it was changed to an 'aerobics' program and next to a 'carpentary' program. Mr. Magoo as usual being visually impaired, went through all the 'rituals' with his chicken. It was hilarious! Get this movie and laugh your way through with Mr. Magoo from the beginning when the jewel was stolen to the end when he restored it to its rightful place, all the while not realizing the dangers he was in. This is because as in the cartoon, he always walks away smoothly from all harm despite his bad eyesight. This is a wonderful movie for 'tired, sore' eyes!

This 1962 special marked the last hurrah of Mr. Magoo, who starred in 43 cartoon shorts, including two Oscar® winners, from the UPA Studio between 1949 and 1959. Magoo appears as Scrooge in a Broadway production of "A Christmas Carol" in this minimally animated hour. The play-within-the-show features forgettable songs by Jules Styne and Bob Merrill: Tiny Tim ("played" by the animated character Gerald McBoing-Boing) sings, oddly, of "razzle berry dressing" and "woofle jelly cake." This retelling of Dickens's holiday standard is much tamer than Richard Williams's Oscar-winning adaptation: the ghosts aren't scary, nor does Magoo confront the specters of Ignorance and Want. Small children who might be frightened by more dramatic versions of the story will enjoy this mild program. And the self-satisfied chuckles and bromides Jim Backus gives Magoo in his lighter moments remain as delightful as ever. This film is suitable for ages 6 and older. --Charles Solomon

I used to watch this version of "A Christmas Carol" when I was a kid, and it has remained my favorite. I had to purchase the DVD for my collection when it became available. Many thumbs up!

I saw this when it was first released. I was just about ten years old. It was wonderful! I knew the story already, but this version brought it to life in a most wonderful way. I still watch it, every year. I know the songs by heart. I love musicals, such as The Music Man, and The Sound of Music, and South Pacific. This story is so much more fun with the music. I never really liked the Mr Magoo stuff until this came out, and it is one of my favorite video performances of all time! Any child, of any age, will find it non-threatening and yet will understand the message and characters quite well, and take them to heart. That includes adult children. God Bless us, every one!

A "Carol" That Really Sings.......2006-10-21

"Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" manages, in the short space of one
hour, to accomplish what every trumped-up, phony Hollywood version
of Dickens's immortal story has failed to do: communicate the theme
of the tale and all of it's poignant emotion with immense charm,
fun, and artistry. Even after all these years, it still works --
and wonderfully. It reminds us that an adaptation can be true
to its source and still be creative and vastly enjoyable
on its own terms. I do not know how they managed it, but everyone
involved should be applauded and thanked for bringing this fine
production to life. As Tiny Tim would say "God bless them, every one."

A joyous holiday classic with plenty of razzleberry dressing...........2006-08-07

This delightful animated film brings together the cranky, vision challenged Mr. Magoo, voiced by the wonderful Jim Backus, together with Charles Dicken's beloved literary masterpiece, "A Christmas Carol."

What's so special about this DVD is for those who grew up with it as a kid, we probably never saw the whole thing as TV would inevitably cut it up for commercials. The introduction of Magoo racing to make the curtain call may not have anything to do with the Christmas parable, however it's great fun to finally see it uncut and restored here. Overall the film print is good and the extras include a Magoo bonus short along with information on the song and music composers Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, who composed show tunes for Broadway and beyond.

Treat yourself and your family to this one around the holidays. Yes, there are almost too many versions of Scrooge and company to go around, however this may be one of the most enjoyable and unique renditions ever created.

"Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" is simply the finest film realization ever, animated or live, of Charles Dickens' wonderful and wondrous tale. Sheer magic, astonishing beauty of song and story, deeply loving, profoundly moving. If you have a heart that has been broken but yet capable of hearing the most exquisite whisperings of that which makes life not just good but even mystical, not just sweet but even sacred, then this film is your film, this story is your story, and its songs sing beauty and comfort to you even in your night of most inward darkness. And the song at the film's center and heart, "Winter Was Warm," sung by a woman with the voice of love itself, is perhaps the greatest song of lost and yearning love ever recorded. A thousand "Bravos" and profoundest gratitude to all who worked to create this magnificent masterpiece of the storyteller's art--this journey from bleakest tragedy to utter exaltation.

Why did it take this long for one of the greatest animation shows over the last 55 yrs to make it to DVD? WHATS NEW MR. MAGOO is the last set of Magoo cartoons that ran in 1977. This dvd features 6 of those classic episodes and is nothing short than a must have masterpiece. Non stop laughter and the warm feeling from head to toe that Magoo always delivers. Sony Wonder has put Magoo back on the map. Keep the episodes comming!!!! Would be great to see some of the older episodes too. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY.Oh Magoo,you've done it again!!!

I loved this! This is exactly what I remembered as a kid on TV. The same theme song, same Mr Magoo voice etc. I can't wait for all esisodes to come out.

Buyer beware! Not classic Magoo.......2005-08-30

I purchased this item at a retail outlet, and was dismayed to find upon playing it that it is several episodes of a dismal 1977 TV series. Unless the buyer is familiar with the series title "What's New, Mr. Magoo," one would have no idea that it was part of that lame effort -- there is no indication on the package that this was made for TV. The 1977 copyright date is the only clue. Don't waste your money on this!

Great!! Wonderful 70s Detecive Film!!.......2003-09-01

One Of My Wives Is Missing is one of the most underated mystery films of the 70s, it is also one of the best! Jack Klugman gives a superb performance as the small town detective. If you like detective shows and films from the genre of Columbo and MacMillan and Wife then don't miss this film.

Nonstop adventure--a very fun movie.......1999-09-18

The Crusher Joe movie looks a little different from the OVAs (the character designs don't look quite as sharp, and there's a few goofy, cartoony touches here and there), but it's still a terrific, exciting piece of anime. This time, Joe, Talos, Alfin, and Ricky are hired to go to a backwater planet to recover a kidnapped heiress from space pirates, only to find lies, conspiracies, and doublecrosses galore waiting for them. The plot gets complicated, but it's usually pretty clear what's going on. As in the OVAs, once the action gets going, there's no letup. This plays like old-fashioned pulp sci-fi, with very archetypal characters and plots, but like Star Wars, it does it so well that it's still exciting and fresh. This is an overlooked gem, even in anime circles, and I highly recommend it (parents take note, there is considerable violence in it (it's an action movie), and some very brief (and not very detailed) nudity.)
