Divorced toy company executive Scott Calvin (Tim Allen of Home Improvement and the Toy Story movies) is pleased to have his son Charlie for Christmas, though the boy himself isn't happy about it. But when Santa Claus accidentally topples off the roof of the house and falls with a thud in the snow, Scott finds himself taking the merry old elf's place and earning new respect in his son's eyes. When the night ends, the reindeer take them to the north pole, and Scott discovers that by donning the fabled red suit, he's inadvertently agreed to become the next Santa Claus. The next morning he wakes up in his own bed and thinks it's all a dream--only Charlie remembers it with crystal clarity. Scott now has to deal with his suspicious ex-wife (Wendy Crewson, Air Force One) and her psychiatrist boyfriend (Judge Reinhold, Beverly Hills Cop), who both think he's playing tricks with Charlie's mind, and also with his own out-of-control body, which is putting on weight and growing a prodigious beard. The Santa Clause probably won't supplant It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street as anyone's favorite holiday film, but it's an enjoyable, straightforward family film, anchored by the affable charisma of Allen. --Bret Fetzer

Is the balance of power in the world, the essentially unequal distribution of wealth and clout that has shaped civilization for centuries, a matter of survival of the fittest… or merely of the luckiest? In Guns, Germs, and Steel, UCLA professor (and author of the best-seller bearing the same title) Jared Diamond makes a compelling case for the latter. Diamond's theory is that the predominance of white Europeans (and Americans of European descent) over other cultures has nothing to do with racial superiority, as many have claimed, but is instead the result of nothing more, or less, than geographical coincidence. His argument, in a nutshell, is that the people who populated the Middle East's "fertile crescent" thousands of years ago were the first farmers, blessed with abundant natural resources (native crops such as wheat and barley, domesticable animals like pigs, goats, sheep, and cows). When their descendents migrated to Europe and northern Africa, climates similar to the crescent's, those same assets, which were unavailable in most of the rest of the world, led to the flourishing of advanced civilizations in those places as well. Add to that their ability to control fire, and Europeans eventually developed the guns and steel (swords, trains, etc.) they used to conquer the planet (the devastating diseases they brought with them, like smallpox, were an unplanned "benefit" to their subjugation of, for instance, Peru's native Incas). Spread out over three episodes and two discs and presented with National Geographic's usual style and thoroughness, the program uses location footage (from New Guinea, South America, Africa, and elsewhere), interviews, reenactments, maps, and Diamond's own participation to support his thesis. And while one might disagree with his conclusions, there is no doubt that Guns, Germs, and Steel is a provocative, classy piece of work. --Sam Graham

Description

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book and national best seller, Guns, Germs, and Steel is an epic detective story that offers a gripping expose on why the world is so unequal. Professor Jared Diamond traveled the globe for over 30 years trying to answer the biggest question of world history. Why is the world so unequal? The answers he found were simple yet extraordinary. Our destiny depends on geography and access to: Guns, Germs, and Steel. Weaving together anthropology and science with epic historical reenactments, Guns, Germs, and Steel brings Diamond's fascinating theories to life, and moves beyond the book to bring his ideas into the present day.

1 out of 5 stars 5 mins of brilliant profound insight stretched into 3 hours.......2007-05-23

Do not buy this. Rent it, maybe. Better yet, rent it, turn on subtitles, mute the sound, and run it at double time, assuming you can read fast. Massive amounts of repetition in the script.

A program from, hello, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, should at least get the geography right. Cape Town is not remotely the most southern tip of Africa. Total bull and a popular error. Go read a map.

Next, the phrase "Guns germs and steel" gets uttered SO frequently that soon it becomes unbearable. My partner and I took to torturing each other by saying it aloud for the next 2 days.

This is yet another documentary by a director who feels it necessary to show a man breaking into tears and then deliberately filming him while he's such a mess, he can't enunciate. If I cared for this manipulative drivel, I wouldn't have cancelled my cable TV.

A brilliant man's theory in a book ruined by stupid, cutesy direction and painful scriptwriting.

4 out of 5 stars smashing western hubris.......2007-05-08

We european-americans tend to think that we rule the world because we're esprcially smart, innovative, or skilled. This documentary shows that we're nothing of the sort. All the advantages we have had over other populations have just been accidents of geography. Diamond presents the theories very well on these DVD's, and I found all three episodes to be interesting, engaging, and at times even touching.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening Video Series.......2007-04-10

I found Diamond's theory very enlightening and I highly recommend watching this video and/or reading his book.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-03-21

Thank you for your research. I was in Papua New Guinea and it was very interesting to learn about this DVD prior to visiting. Now that I am back, I will watch it again because it makes even more sense to me.

3 out of 5 stars not deep but worth 3 hours watching.......2007-03-21

I saw the 3rd part on TV and just had to watch the rest. It's well done, interesting with the usual excellent filmography by NatGeo, as well as enlightening dialogue with J.Diamond. It is a personal story, the answer to a New Guinean's question posed 30 years ago:"how come you white men have so much cargo and us New Guineans have so little?"

So exactly why did Europeans conquer the world in the 16th-19th centuries? His short answer is the title: Guns, Germs and Steel. His long answer is biogeography, Europeans had a leg up on the rest of the world because of wheat and cows, which allowed a higher, more materially prosperous, greater population centered in larger cities society which overwhelmed the aborginal peoples of N and S America, Oceania and the Southern tip of Africa. It's almost common wisdom that this is at least part of the answer, but Diamond does an excellent job of arguing the point and showing the consequences of this division into Northern and Southern societies.

I enjoyed the show, it is not a deeply thinking type of documentary, but rather aimed more at the emotions, the feelings of comradeship that ought to exist like the bonds between Diamond and the people he knows in New Guinea, or the sympathy for young malaria victims in Africa. The idea that the west, that Europeans, are blessed not for what they are, nor for what they did, but simply because of where their ancestors settled, is meant to temper the common ideal that my arm has gotten me this wealth and it is justificably mine to do whatever i think best, that those in need have only to reach out and do the same thing to succeed, rather than expecting a handout from the strong. Not a bad lesson at all, gratitude, modesty, sharing, not done in a particularly heavy handed preaching way as is often the case, but rather low keyed, here are the facts, you are not better than the New Guineans but rather more lucky, not smarter or more hard working or whatever, just fortunate.

I look forward to Diamond meet a Chinese man who asks him:"why does the West have so much when us Chinese had all the pieces you mention long before the Europeans. But we used gunpowder to make firecrackers not firearms. Why doesn't material wealth follow good culture and wisdom?" And that is where the show leaves me, what he says is all good and probably substantially true, but why didn't China develop long before the West?

How about a new villain and a dash of It's a Wonderful Life to spice up the third installment of the popular Tim Allen holiday franchise? Under the onslaught of another Christmas season, Santa Claus/Scott Calvin (Allen) is feeling even more pressure because Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell, reprising her role from The Santa Clause 2) is expecting a little Claus and also longing for the company of some "tall people." So Scott agrees to let her parents (Ann-Margret and Alan Arkin) visit as long as they believe that they're really in Canada rather than at the North Pole. Further complicating matters is a visit by Scott's ex-wife (Wendy Crewson), her husband (Judge Reinhold), and their daughter, Lucy (Liliana Mumy). Enter the bad boy of the Council of Legendary Figures, Jack Frost (Martin Short), who's supremely jealous of the figures who have their own holidays, especially Santa. So he launches a plan to sabotage the toy factory and compel Scott to invoke the little-known Escape Clause and wish he'd never become Santa. The resulting evocation of a classic Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life, is seasoned with a splash of Back to the Future when Scott rewinds 12 years (has it really been that long?) to when it all began. Though neither sequel has matched the charm of the original Santa Clause, both have been safe, reliable family fare. (All ages: some crude humor) --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Movie, that Kids would enjoy.......2007-04-26

It wasn't the best movie, and granted it was probably the weakest of the three, but as long as the kids enjoyed it, and judging by their reviews they did, I'm happy.

This movie started out strong, but towards the end, it felt rushed. Like the director and the production team realized they were running out of time and had to wrap the movie up ASAP. But, it was still decent. It was better than half the crap they have out in the movie theaters now.

Will I buy this DVD? Of course. I have the first two, and I can't leave the trilogy open. And the bonus features are a big plus from me.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-03-25

this is my favorite one out of the seris it very fast paced i never got bored at all watching this movie unlike the second movie you need 2 see the first one to understand it clearly yes u good understand it without seeing the first one but it helps u follow through once the escape claus happens though it is now out of theaters when it comes out on dvd in november see it u won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Excelent !!.......2007-02-13

I loved it. I love Tim and think he makes his best effort in every movie.

3 out of 5 stars for my granddaughter Sasha.......2007-02-09

Great family movie. Sasha, age 6, loves the movie. She focused on a secondary character (Jack Frost)
and has almost instant recall on all things concerning him, music of the film, and plot. She is amazing. For fun I am trying to find out the
COLOR of Jack Frosts shoes in the movie Santa Claus 3, the Escape...
she didnt remember seeing his shoes and she wants to know every detail!

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE COLOR OF JACK's shoes?????????? Costume designer's
names is Ingrid Ferrin. Dont know how to contact her to get this answered.

THANKS!!!!!! Grandma in Texas.

2 out of 5 stars This movie gets a big fat PASS from me, because ... .......2006-12-30

First of all, the trailer was the best part of the movie & had me expecting a totally different story ...

Second, the story I got turned out to be the "Grinch Who Stole Christmas" crossed with "It's A Wonderful Life" (the latter of which was even more boring than this hokey remake) & doesn't that therefore make "Santa Clause 3" SO cliche & SO done before?!

Third, the kids in the audience seemed to enjoy it, but MAN was I bored! (& I actually enjoyed the original Santa Clause, so I can't blame the boredom factor on the fact that this is supposed to be a kids' movie ... )

Fourth, I found the Christmas council to be extremely offensive (read: inappropriately pagan for a movie that is ostensibly about Christmas).

*****WHOOP! WHOOP! WHOOP!*****SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!*****READ NO FARTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE!*****

Fifth, I found Jack Frost's conversion to be ...

zzzzzzzzzzz

Whazzat? Oof. I must have dozed off for a minute. Sorry. Now what was I saying? Oh yeah. Poor, pitiful, evil Jack Frost.

(ho hum)

Wouldn't it have been much better to kill him off than convert him? I mean, come ON. Is the converted Jack Frost supposed to be an improvement? YUCKY. He's disgusting! I liked him much better as a villain. Better hair. Better duds. I say: just freeze him off next to a wooly mammoth & be done with him. Or bring him back in next year's sequel (because you know there's going to be one). For goodness' sake. Do we always have to embrace our inner icicle? (hurl)

& sixth -- not only Jack -- but there was SO much about this movie that just didn't make sense!

(yawn)

Okay, I'm done with it. It's not even worth the time I took for it ...

Considering how lame this sequel could have been, The Santa Clause 2 makes for a pleasant holiday diversion. It's got the familiar smell of Disney marketeering, and more than a few parents will object to this further embellishment of the St. Nick legend, but Tim Allen's amiable presence provides ample compensation. As a divorced dad who inherited the jolly man's job in The Santa Clause, Allen now faces another Yuletide challenge. According to the "Missus Clause" in his North Pole contract, he can't continue to be the real Santa until he gets married. As luck and five credited screenwriters would have it, Allen falls for the Scrooge-y principal (Elizabeth Mitchell) of his son's school, while a phony, power-hungry duplicate Santa wreaks havoc on the North Pole's overworked elves. It's all as sweet as spiced eggnog, with that warmed-over feel of a mandated sequel, but the Christmas spirit does prevail with the sound of sleigh bells and Allen's rosy-cheeked ho, ho, ho! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars I am not sure what you are asking........2007-01-11

I am not sure what you are asking. You want a review of this item. It was a movie. Do I review the movie? If I do, then it was a great movie that my grandchildren enjoyed on Christmas Eve day along with the rest of my family. It was a wonderful family movie which I am sure we will watch again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Santa Wants a Wife for Christmas.......2007-01-08

Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has settled into his new role as Santa Claus. In fact, he loves it. And kids the world over have never been happier.

Unfortunately, this Christmas Scott's hit a couple snags. First, his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) is acting up. In fact, after he's caught spray painting the school, he winds up on Santa's naughty list.

Even more pressing, elf Curtis (Spencer Breslin) has discovered another clause. It seems Santa needs a Mrs. Claus or he will stop being Santa. In fact, he's already loosing weight and returning to his original form. If he isn't married by Christmas, he'll cease being Santa forever.

Naturally, the month before Christmas is the busiest time of the year for Santa and the elves. So he leaves behind a robot duplicate of himself and heads to his ex-wife's house. He hopes to reconnect with Charlie and find someone willing to marry him. So why is the first person to catch his eye the Christmas hating principal of Charlie's school (Elizabeth Mitchell)? Will it work, or is Scott doomed to cease being Santa forever?

The first movie is one of my favorite Christmas films. In fact, I watch it every year. While this sequel doesn't capture all the charm of the original, this is still a fun movie. It's nice seeing the entire cast of the first movie back, and they do a good job. The climax is funny and sweet. And the special effects are wonderful.

This sequel is just a step down from the original. It's not a must watch, but if I have the time I enjoy it.

We've owned this movie in VHS form for several years (since it came out, actually) but finally upgraded to DVD. Just wish I'd thought to order it in time to get it for Christmas this year, instead of the day after. That said, I ordered it on Dec. 19 and it came on Dec. 26. That's pretty fast shipping during the Christmas rush.

    Either way, LOVE this movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars Seeing is Believing.......2007-01-24

This is an absolute must see for families of all ages. It is very well done, professional and sincere. Garanteed to make a believer out of the biggest skeptic. Part of this documentary was an impetus for our family to see if we might be able to duplicate the Sobwodo's(sp)The world is not ready for what we captured on film. As an aside; we were not able to preview this film as was suggested (good idea by the way), so we squared our grandchildren up directly in front of the TV and we sat in the back of the room where we could absorb the full impact of what our eyes were seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Tour de Force - Great for Kids and Adults.......2005-12-15

This film re-ignites the wonder of Santa Claus! The high production value, documentary style, and scientific edge make "Search for Santa" the perfect film to show a child questioning the existence of Santa Claus. "Search for Santa" is guaranteed to add a few more years to your child's wonder about Old Saint Nick.

However, if you think this film is simply for children, think again. For adults the film is an absolute joy as a mockumentary, with a multitude of scientists and Santa seekers delivering theory after theory of heart felt "Clausology." The best part is when you stop laughing and ask yourself: "Wait, are these people really serious?" But, this thought only makes you laugh harder (I actually had to wipe the tears from my eyes to be able to clearly see the 8mm "Swoboda Film" section).

Seemingly shot in multiple locations, the production includes great effects, professional graphics and computer animations, superb sound and camera work, and wonderful narration, all set to the backdrop of traditional Christmas music well integrated into the pacing of the film.

Overall, I found "Search for Santa" to be a gem of an independent film. One that I will keep next to my VHS copy of "Christmas Story" to be taken out, dusted off, and enjoyed each year during the Christmas season. Definite thumbs up. Old Kris Kringle would be proud . . . wherever he may be.

(For parents with younger children, make sure you watch the film before showing your children. First to determine if they are old enough to understand the content and if the film will strengthen their belief in Santa. Secondly, you will want to get your laughing out of the way so you don't tip them off).
