The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet? The title alone is amusingly absurd. Unless your idea of adventure includes picnics, hay rides, recreational horseback riding, and square dances, the word hardly applies. As revealed in this four-disc, 24-episode boxed set (the first official Ozzie and Harriet release on DVD) that cherry-picks some of the best moments from the entire 1952-66 run, this was a show so mild it made Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood look like The Wire--and that was a big part of its considerable charm.

Bandleader Ozzie, singer Harriet (nee Hilliard), and sons David and Ricky had already been on the radio for several years before the television show appeared; there had also been a feature film, Here Come the Nelsons (with Rock Hudson). The TV series, likely the only one ever to feature an entire family portraying themselves, continued where the radio show had left off, with Ozzie (who directed, produced, and co-wrote the vast majority of the episodes) as the well-meaning but sometimes confused, bumbling patriarch, Harriet his sensible but gentle foil, David the dutiful, self-effacing older son, and Ricky the mischievous youngster. Things naturally changed over the next decade and a half, as the boys grew up, went to college, and got married, but the dynamic remained essentially the same. Ozzie and Harriet was nothing if not wholesome. The parents were decent, honest folks; never dictatorial or authoritarian, they guided their sons but gave them enough space to make their own decisions, and David and Ricky were as clean-cut as they come. Of course, there was also Ricky's emergence as a singing star. Broadcast in 1957, "Ricky, the Drummer" was his musical debut (he sings and plays the skins with surprising skill), and the boxed set does a decent job of charting his growth from a somewhat wooden 16-year-old into a legitimate musician with a great band (featuring James Burton on guitar) and undeniable charisma; Rick Nelson was no Elvis Presley, but he had far more substance than other teen idols of the era.

Fourteen years is a long run for any TV show (only The Simpsons has surpassed it in the sitcom category), and by the time The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet started airing episodes in color in the '65-66 season, it had run out steam. Still, this is a classic bit of Americana that will find favor with old and new viewers alike. Bonus features include commentary on four episodes by David (the only living member from the original show) and Sam (son of Rick) Nelson, along with a 1949 radio broadcast, home movies, and more. --Sam Graham

It was nice having commentary on a few of the shows by David Nelson. What would make it even nicer is if they had someone familiar with the show share the commentary so that they could ask him the type of questions that all of us fans would like to know.

The Color Episodes Looked Dreadful.......2007-06-18

The color episodes that Harriet Nelson introduced during a retrospective on The Disney Channel in the late 1980's were very clear and vivid. Unfortunately, the two Shout Factory has included on this DVD set are blurry and faded, and the sound is weak. Hopefully future (season) sets will be remastered and uncut.

A Trip Down Memory Lane With the Nelsons!.......2007-06-09

Growing up in the 50s and 60s had its ordeals. Turn on the TV to escape! I wanted to be Ricky Nelson. He was 3 years older than I, but in my fantasy world I was getting the same adulation that was coming his way. Not too realistic for a chubby, pimply-faced kid like me. There were other family shows on back then, like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver, with the same kind of hokey plot lines as Ozzie & Harriet. But the one thing the Nelsons had over the others was that although yes, they were acting, underneath it all they WERE a real family. Kudos to the producers of this DVD set. Watching David and Ricky grow up again was well worth the price of admission. Thanks for a wonderful trip to yesteryear!

Not great "extras".......2007-06-08

Every episode of O&H is pretty much the same, so 24 is serious overkill. Only three have narration by David Nelson and it isn't very interesting. Not recommended.

This DVD set is just plain awful.

Obscure, bottom-of-the-sewer episodes replete with authentic 1950s television broadcast quality.

Avoid this purchase like the plague.

Great looking DVD of 1950s favorites.......2003-08-13

There are plenty of DVDs out on the market today with episodes of television shows from the 1950s and 1960s that have fallen into the "public domain." Many of them are cheaply put together and, visually, look it. Not so with releases from the Falcon Picture Group. By and large, their releases look better than the vast majority of DVDs with older television shows. The reason for this is that they have done digital restoration of the prints included on this set.

What I like about this DVD is the great variety of shows included. Yes, some of the shows, like Dragnet, the Lone Ranger, Red Skelton, etc., are available on other DVDs, but they have also included some shows like Racket Squad, Mr. & Mrs. North, and Sea Hunt that are either rarely or never seen on video/DVD. I hadn't seen Sea Hunt since its syndication run in the 1960s. What a great show and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only episode available anywhere on DVD (wish there were more episodes of Sea Hunt on DVD).

Since these shows are pretty old, 50's/60's timeframe, quality is not the absolute best, but still quite good. I enjoyed watching these shows very much as I grew up watching them on tv and became a Rick Nelson fan. I would recommend this DVD for any fan of the Nelson family.

Better quality than expected.......2005-11-06

First of all I will give an information Amazon often misses to give - the info which episodes are on the DVD. This is quite important since there are so many compilations of this show and no complete season boxes (why not?) around. Episodes on this DVD are: "Maid of honor", "Rick grows a beard","Be on time","Rick's Riding Lesson" and "Busy Christmas".
My review is based on the first two episodes only, but I guess that`s enough to review the technical quality of the DVD (I assume people interested in this DVD mostly know what this show is about).
The picture quality is not High Definition of course, but better than expected. A season box should have a digital remaster better than this DVD, but still the quality is okay. Same is true for the sound quality.
For this reasonable price you get a DVD well worth it's money. For Rick Nelson fans a must, if they don`t have this episodes by now.

Some of us remeber this series from childhood, and it is just as filled with family warmth and humor now. This is about a real family, not actors. Real people with real family values.

This is what situation, family comedy used to be, with moral lessons as well as lots of wholesome fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD, but I don't know if you would enjoy it as much as I did unless you were a true Ozzie and Harriet fan. I watched their television series as a child and grew up with a tremendous crush on Ricky. This "Biography" DVD was factual and well-done, and it kept my interest until the very end. It contained some information that was new to me, also.

My Favorie TV show.......2007-05-18

I absoluely loved this TV show. I was so "in love" with Ricky. My kids think this family is "nerdy", but what do they know. On cold, wintery days its fun to sit by the fire and watch my very own Ozzie & Harriet

I cannot express my extreme disappointment in this set. DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY ON IT. It is simply not worth it. The picture quality is horrendous, most episodes are not viewable at all. I felt like I'd gotten conned. Pick up some of the other less expensive discs and you'll be much happier. One note however, it seems to be a common thread that the earlier episodes have not translated well to dvd, so be careful and read the reviews.

The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet Box Set.......2005-05-25

This box set is an absolute disgrace to this wonderful old show and what I would like to know is why I was charged $75.00 for this mess. The picuture quality is more than awful. The picture jumps, runs and there are skips in the sound track. Most of the shows can not be viewed due to their poor quality. I have this collection on VHS and the picture and sound are much better. I am returning this set for a full refund. Do not waste your money on this set as you will be very disappointed.
