Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
DeVito and Schwarzenegger as fraternal twin brothers? Hey, why not? This delightful 1988 comedy by Ivan Reitman--about genetically designed twin siblings who discover each other at the age of 35--works out just fine, thanks largely to great chemistry between the two stars. Despite a certain amount of rough action and tension, the film really gets a lift from the palpable innocence Reitman develops, and the female costars (Chloe Webb and Kelly Preston) bring some interesting texture of their own. This is a film that walked the tightrope of a high concept and completely succeeded. To see how easy it is to stumble in a similar situation, check out DeVito and Schwarzenegger in Reitman's Junior. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

After a string of mediocre movies, director Tim Burton regains his footing as he shifts from macabre fairy tales to Southern tall tales. Big Fish twines in and out of the oversized stories of Edward Bloom, played as a young man by Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Down with Love) and as a dying father by Albert Finney (Tom Jones). Edward's son Will (Billy Crudup, Almost Famous) sits by his father's bedside but has little patience with the old man's fables, because he feels these stories have kept him from knowing who his father really is. Burton dives into Bloom's imagination with zest, sending the determined young man into haunted woods, an idealized Southern town, a traveling circus, and much more. The result is sweet but--thanks to the director's dark and clever sensibility--never saccharine. Also featuring Jessica Lange, Alison Lohman, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and Steve Buscemi. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars What is Truth?.......2007-07-03

I liked this movie a lot. True to the book, but smartly changed when it served the visual medium of film. One bit in the book I was hoping Tim Burton would discuss why he didn't take was the thing that really kept people in Spector, the imaginary town. In the book, there's a fierce dog that bites people's fingers off if they try to leave. Very Burton-esque. Couldn't figure out why in the film it was about the shoes.

However, I loved the relationship between Edward and Sandra Bloom - both as young people and as older folks. The simplicity of their love and complete acceptance of the other was touching. I thought William struck exactly the right tone, trying to come to terms with his father before the latter's death. All in all, the movie was an interesting juxtaposition of 'real life' and fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Fact is fiction, and fiction is fact; but how the story is told is what's important.......2007-06-30

I did enjoy this movie quite a bit, and the tall tale sequences made me chuckle more than I normally would while watching a movie. However, when I read the reviews which absolutely slaughter this film, I am inclined to agree with the criticisms. As it approaches its climax, it too often slides into maudlin sentimentality. It also leaves much to be desired when exploring the relationships of sons & fathers. It is probably best not to try and seek deeper truths from this movie.

Nonetheless, it is quite entertaining, by and large. As Edward Bloom understood, the deeper truths of a story really pale in comparison with how good of a story it is in the first place. For this reviewer at least, a really good story about a bunch of really good stories is justification for liking it. My four-star rating comes with the qualification that at times, it promises to deliver more than it really can, and tries to be more than it really is, and stumbles as a result. When it did become a bad thing to be a really good yarn? Sometimes that really is enough.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most Creative Films in Years..........2007-05-21

If you see this film for no other reason, watch it for the dazzling cinematography. You can't help but be swept up into this magical world and wondering how such a fantasy could possibly be real. If you enjoyed The Princess Bride, Secondhand Lions, The Wizard of Oz, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory you are sure to enjoy Big Fish.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Message, a "definite recommend".......2007-05-12

Great movie. Great message. This is one of those movies that I enjoy watching again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes Fiction is Better than the Truth.......2007-05-09

Tim Burton's return to genuine film making is a welcome endeavor indeed. Here he creates a film that reminds me of what great film making is all about: fantasy, love and reflecting on the human spirit. I scoffed at a review that compared Big Fish to The Wizard of Oz when Big Fish first came out, but upon viewing it the comparison is really not hyperbolic at all and is actually quite justified. There is a unique carelessness and an innocence that resides perfectly and constantly in both films. To me, both films are truly a breath of fresh air and hope.

Big Fish is a book written by Daniel Wallace and is the delightful story of Edward Bloom, who has reached the twilight of his life and surrounds himself with his son, daughter-in-law and his wonderful wife Sandra. Eddie has seemingly lived a fantastic life of lies and exaggerations and his son has grown to call his bluff on more than one occasion. In fact, his son returns not just to possibly say good-bye to his father, but to attempt to get him to spill the beans on the truth of who his old man really is. Eddie of course, stands by his stories and brushes off his son's accusations nonchalantly. Most of the film we see Eddie revisit his life as a whole, seen through only his own stories. How he once befriended a 12 foot man; how he arrived in a town that was paradise, once to early and once too late when he turned it back into paradise again; how he joined the circus for three years so he could find out pieces information once a month from Amos the ringmaster about the girl Eddie was sure would be his wife and how Sandra would believe Eddie to be dead in war but he would return. The stories are full of details that would clearly indicate they are false but sometimes they are just better that way. Eddie is a mythological figure and that is just fine with him and as a viewer it's fine with me as well.

Eddie is played by Albert Finney who is in turn mirrored by Eddie's youthful version, the outstanding Ewen MacGregor who once again proves his versatility. Jessica Lange plays the older Sandra and she is played as a youngster by the talented Alison Lohman who carries as much energy and beauty as you could expect for a role with so little dialogue and so much importance. She is a real find and makes you fall in love with her right along with Eddie. Helena Bonham Carter brings her talents to the roles of The Witch and Jenny (or all of the other important women in Eddie's life). Steve Buscemi shows up, which is always a pleasant surprise and of course Amos is played by Danny DeVito who is as enjoyable as ever. The flat Keanu Reeves clone Billy Crudup is perhaps the only drawback, but he is a safe casting call as Eddie's son and does what he can in discovering that his father is exactly what he says he is and more.

Let me just add that I believe Big Fish is a family film. I don't see why it shouldn't be rated PG rather than PG-13. The language rises above the prime time television level once, there is blood only in a comedic and romantic fight sequence that has a truly admirable message and there is a women's nude rear displayed briefly and non-sexually. This is not grounds for a PG-13 movie. I would bring a seven year old to see this. In fact, my guess is that the movie was directed at this demographic. When content is not exploitative, it is not really inappropriate. I can't see why Rock Diesel films get PG-13ed when the message is nothing short of "Kill the bad guys, make a lame joke, drive and crash really cool vehicles and get the dirty chick". Anyway, Big Fish may be about a guy who is stretching the truth but the characters' hearts couldn't be more firmly in the right place. The scene when Eddie fills an entire field with Sandra's favorite flower and stands in the middle of the field, outside of her window and calls out to her comes to mind. It brings joy to my heart in a way that only a film like The Wizard of Oz can, and a small child should never ever miss that kind of message. Big Fish is a smart film that really generates a ton of emotion and convincing special effects. I don't doubt for a moment that more work went into the effects than money. This film carried a sense of hope, pride, real love, respect, fantasy and the crucial element that films of these tainted times often forget: natural and unforced optimism.

Then there is Tim Burton. He is the filmmaker that can put all of these elements together and for the first time tug at your emotions as well. Two things make this film better than Burton's other work. Firstly, it is real and doesn't dwell on being over-stylized and under-dramatized. Secondly, it is pure, clean and full of moments we can all relate too. Tim Burton has made a film that will alienate his older fans who haven't matured like he has, without "selling out" (he's done that before) and he has made a film that the whole world can watch, enjoy and discover this unique filmmaker. I'm glad that he saved some of his real film making inspiration for this wonderful little story.

Conspiracies abound in Children of Dune, Sci-Fi Channel's praiseworthy miniseries sequel to Frank Herbert's Dune, loyally adapted from the Herbert novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune by John Harrison, who passed directorial duties (due to a scheduling conflict) to Greg Yaitanes, a 31-year-old TV director and Dune neophyte tackling his biggest assignment to date. Uninitiated viewers face a disadvantage; it's best to read Herbert's books and/or see the first miniseries before plunging into this remarkably coherent tangle of political intrigue, unfolding 12 years after the events of Dune.

To his horror, Maud'Dib--Arrakis emperor Paul Atreides (Alec Newman, reprising his Dune role)--has become the unintended figurehead of a violent dictatorship, and his enemies are multiplying. Vanishing into the desert, he waits as destiny shapes his twin heirs Leto II (James McAvoy) and Ghanima (Jessica Brooks), who must contend with their scheming aunt Alia (Daniela Amavia) while Princess Wensicia (Susan Sarandon), of the enemy House Corrino, plots her own attack on Maud'Dib's familial empire. Exiled Atreides matriarch Lady Jessica (Alice Krige, giving the film's finest performance) returns to Arrakis, where the enormous, desert-dwelling sandworms face an uncertain future. As always, the spice must flow, and the universe's most coveted commodity remains at the center of this richly detailed and physically impressive production. Special effects range from awesome (fly-over shots of the capital city, Arakeen) to awful (the saber-tooth tigers look like Jumanji rejects), and Dune devotees will endlessly debate the miniseries' strengths and weaknesses. Some may desire more action to punctuate the film's inherent verbosity, but consensus will surely conclude that this is Dune done right, with monumental effort and obvious devotion from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-06-29

I haven't ready of the books, I won't lie to you about that.

I haven't seen much Sci-Fi beyond what's universally known (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)

But I will still tell you this much...

This is one of the best mini-series I have ever watched. You get everyting in this, drama, suspense, action and so much more.

If you're planning on buying this to get a war miniseries, an all out action miniseries, or even a "cool and trippy" sci-fi miniseries, this may not be for you.

It's so much deeper than that and unfortunately I don't think a lot of people will be able to appreciate it. That being said, if you're in the mood for a good story, I'd recommend this one.

I would however behoove you to check out the first miniseries,Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) , before watching this one, if only to get a full appreciation and understanding of what's going on.

5 out of 5 stars Affordable and Amazing to watch!.......2007-06-07

After watching the first mini-series of dune (and loving it!), I immediately watched the second as soon as I got it. I thought it was even better then the first.
First I'm glad they fixed some minors problems, a major issue with everyone was the Fremen's neon glowing eyes. They toned it down to a more subtle believable look.
Second was the great casting. I think almost everyone did a great job. My favorite actors were the ones playing Leto II, Ghanima, Irulan, and Alia. They gave such a powerful performance and really gave their character emotions that we can respond to and feel for. Like Alia's tortured possession scene, Irulan's love for Paul, and Leto and Ghanima's journey to put the rule of the universe to order.
Third was the soundtrack. And what an unbelievable score it was! I love every moment with Brian Tyler's piece. I don't think the movie would have been half as successful without it. I listen to it from my ipod, since I love it so much. It's powerful, diverse, and fits the mood of the story and the characters. My favorite tracks are Children of Dune, House Atredies, and Ima Natusf.
All together it creates a great movie, especially one made for television surprisingly. You usually don't get quality like this on 95% of made for tv movies. So I give a lot of credit to the makers for pulling it off so well within a small budget.
I never read the books and at first with the Dune mini-series and this one, some may not understand some point of the story, but really pay attention and you shouldn't have a problem understanding. It helps to watch it a second time around.

With this price, you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Review: Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries).......2007-06-06

This sequel to the miniseries "Dune" follows the storyline of the original series of books quite well, and is an excellent addition to my video library. After viewing both miniseries, I am encouraged to re-read the texts covered by this set of videos.

5 out of 5 stars Love this mini series.......2007-06-05

Great continuation of the Dune mini series created by the sci-fi channel. They did a great job representing the book. I'm hoping the come out with God Emperor to continue the series.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not up to the books........2007-04-19

The hardest part of adapting the Dune books to a film format is that, in the interest of time, one has to decide whether to focus on the action or the politics of the story line. The Children of Dune (actually a combination of the second and third books) opts to try and strike a middle ground and actually succeeds in large part. They get extra credit from me for bringing back the actors from the Dune mini-series. The story is great, the film quality isn't bad. I thought that they played up the maddness of Paul's sister just a little too much for my taste, but Leto's character seemed spot on. Its well worth the purchase if you're a fan of the Dune books. Its amazing to see some of the places that previously existed only in my head on the screen.

Shakespearean comedy and American high school are a match made in heaven--or Hollywood, at any rate. Somehow the exaggerated emotions and budding hormones of adolescence are perfectly suited to Shakespeare's twisty plots, and She's the Man is a perfect example. Viola (Amanda Bynes, What a Girl Wants) is furious when she learns that her high school, Cornwall, has cut the girl's soccer team--so furious that she takes advantage of her twin brother Sebastian (James Kirk, Final Destination 2) skipping town for a few weeks to take his place at his school, Illyria, so she can join the soccer team there. But her disguise as her brother leads to complications when she falls in love with her soccer-playing roommate and the girl he's in love with falls in love with "Sebastian"... Bynes may not be entirely persuasive as a high school boy, but she's got the charm and sprightliness to make the audience follow her anyway. The clever script walks a fine balance, treating the situation realistically enough to make Viola's efforts matter, but zipping along quickly enough that we don't worry too much about the details. As Duke and Olivia--the other two parts of the love triangle--Channing Tatum and Laura Ramsey combine sex appeal with engaging sweetness; the excellent supporting cast includes David Cross (Arrested Development), Julie Hagerty (Airplane!), and former British soccer star Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). All in all, a delightful bit of fun. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars APRENDIENDO DEL SEXO OPUESTO.......2007-06-30

5 out of 5 stars Not a Chick Flick! Males and Females love this the same! .......2007-06-28

This movie is just hilarious. I went to watch this in theaters when it had just came out with some friends and we all had such a great time because their are so many funny lines to laugh out loud at. Over all this movie relates with guys and girls. And also, this is NOT a chick flick nor is this one of those stupid 'Teen Movies'. It's well written and the acting is great. I seriously could NOT have seen any other person in the staring role than Amanda Bynes - She's hysterical in this film!

I cannot find words to describe how surprised I was with this movie!
I recommend you to watch this movie if your up for a laugh.
*This movie does lean more towards the teen audience but I feel that a parent would enjoy this as well.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-06-02

This was a very well done teen movie, and it is watchable for a much wider audience. This is enjoyable entertainment that just about anyone 13 and up could enjoy. Amanda Bynes was a delight. I will say that Duke had to be a little on the slow side brain ways not to figure out that his roommate was a girl, but that is part of the cuteness of the movie, much like the part of Viola in Twelfth Night. You have to suspend reality a bit to go along with the premise but it's worth it. Also, the soccer coach at good old Illyria. He was a hoot. Good movie. Watch it. Have fun.

5 out of 5 stars She IS the Man.......2007-05-28

This was an excruciatingly hilarious take on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. I had expected it to be entertaining but had in no way expected it to be constantly laugh-out-loud hilarious. Obviously no one is going to win an Oscar for superior acting or impeccable script writing but nonetheless Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum managed to pull off a very fun and adorable film. Admittedly the chemistry between the two main stars was lacking a bit but her hilarity and his hotness more than made up for it. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the film and so it comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER MOVIE!!!!.......2007-05-10

I love this movie!! It is a great movie to watch, it is funny, and Channing Tatum is in it!!!..He looks soo HOT in this movie..It is a must see, Amanda Bynes does a wonderful job, liike she always does!..This movie is soo halirous!!..Trust me, you must see this movie if you haven't already!!!

Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor as the older and younger Edward Bloom are outstanding. This is a wonderful and hauntingly beautiful movie on the meaning of truth as we sum up our lives and try to put meaning to it all. This is an important work from director Tim Burton.

4 out of 5 stars Embellished Dreams and Aspirations and Truth.......2007-02-01

At the time of its release BIG FISH seemed like a big departure from the type of films that Tim Burton was directing. BIG FISH is still refreshing if not just a little strange. Nonetheless, it does not fail to entertain and it does keep you mildly captivated.

There are depictions of outrageous to intimate slices of one man's life. Credibility and embellishment is an ethereal thing.

Depending on how much truth and perhaps the importance of truth itself is found in these events, there eventually there comes the pay-off. What is really true in life anyway?

5 out of 5 stars THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY..........2007-01-21

This is, indeed, a magical, mystical movie about fathers and sons, which is based upon the book "Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions" by Daniel Wallace. The book is a perfect vehicle for Director Tim Burton's signature melange of reality and fantasy. The story is that of a father and his son, their estrangement, and their eventual reconciliation. It is a beautifully realized film that will bring tears to one's eyes.

The father in question is Ed Bloom (Albert Finney) who loves to tell, at least it seems so to his son, Will (Billy Crudup), tall tales about his past. The son becomes estranged from his father on his wedding day, when his father tells one tall tale too many for Will's tastes. For the next several years, Will communicates only with his mother, Sandra (Jessica Lange).

When his father becomes seriously ill, however, Will and his wife rush to his side. Father and son take final stock of each other, and the seemingly tall tales continue. As his father gets progressively worse, Will, feeling that he really does not know his father, embarks on a journey to discover for himself, once and for all, the man his father really is. What he discovers is that his father was not so off the mark with his stories, and he finally begins to appreciate who his father really is and the impact that he has had on others. It allows Will to be able to say goodbye to his father in a way that his father understands and to be at peace with the man whom he discovered his father to be.

The film takes the viewer on a ride through some of Ed Bloom's tall tales, in a series of vignettes, where the viewer sees a young Ed Bloom (Ewan McGregor) living an almost fantastical life. We see him meet the love of his life, Sandra, as a young girl (Alison Lohman). We see him as a circus worker, a soldier, a traveling salesman, and even a bank robber. We see some of the people that cross section his life: a giant, a diminutive ringmaster, a witch, and singing Siamese twins. Ed even comes across a perfectly heavenly town full of wonderful, happy people.

This is simply a marvelous film with fantastical elements reminiscent of "Forrest Gump" and "The Princess Bride". Wonderful performances are given by veteran actors Albert Finney and Jessica Lange. Look for the very touching bath tub scene, where, fully clothed, the love between Ed and Sandra is palpable. Albert Finney, in the role of the senior Ed Bloom, is exceptional as a raconteur of the first order. Ewan McGregor is remarkable as the charismatic, younger Ed Bloom, infusing the role with a joie de vivre that is as infectious as it is engaging.

Jessica Lange is terrific as the senior Sandra Bloom, grounding her relationship with her husband with a steadfastedness born of years of mutual love and respect. Alison Lohman is simply lovely as the younger Sandra, imbuing her character with a beautiful sense of innocence and longing. It is interesting that both Alison Lohman and Ewan McGregor strongly resemble their more senior co-stars.

Billy Crudup is excellent as the angry Will Bloom, the son who needs to reconcile his image of his father with the man his father actually is. Robert Guillaume is masterful in the small role of the senior Dr. Bennett. The rest of the stellar cast is superlative, though Danny DeVito's southern accent needed a bit more work. The direction, however, is deft, and the cinematography is brilliant. This is an absolutely exceptional film. I really enjoyed it immensely, even though I initially viewed this film most reluctantly, and only after much persuasion by my son. I am certainly glad that I did. This film has made me a fan of Tim Burton. It is filmmaking at its best. Bravo!

Description

Amanda Bynes proves that girls can do anything guys can do in She's the Man. The laughs are non-stop when Viola (Bynes), disguised as her twin brother, Sebastian (James Kirk), joins the high school boys' soccer team and helps win the big game while unexpectedly falling for Duke (Channing Tatum) the hot star forward. Viola discovers that dealing with high school politics and twisted love triangles is a major challenge when you're a guy who's really a girl! She's the Man features an ensemble cast of up and coming stars and hit songs from OK-Go, The Veronicas & the F-ups. It's perfect for good-time summer fun!

This first theatrical outing for the ubiquitous Olsen twins is their take on The Parent Trap meets The Prince and the Pauper. One plays a foster child under the care of a single social worker (Kirstie Alley) whose marital status prevents her from adopting her favorite charge. The other is the neglected daughter of a "bazillionaire" (Steve Guttenberg), who's about to marry a gold-digging socialite (played nastily by Jane Sibbett, Ross's first ex-wife on TV's Friends). The foster kid comes to a charity camp abutting the rich girl's summer estate and--presto--the identical strangers meet, hatch a plan to solve both their dilemmas, and switch identities. Directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After), this PG-rated film features some decent G-rated chemistry between Alley and Guttenberg and surprisingly uncloying performances by Mary-Kate and Ashley. The rating is for mild language. (Ages 5 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

This movie is a must see with your children! Kirsty Ally and Steve Guttenberg have great chemistry, along with the Olson twins. It is parent trap with a twist. We just love it!

5 out of 5 stars "It Takes Two" (actually 4).......2007-01-19

If you love a great comedy that you can really laugh with, you will definitely enjoy this movie. Kirstie Alley, Steve Guttenberg and of course the "Olsen twins" make a great combination for this funny and heart warming movie.

2 out of 5 stars Mary-Kate & Ashley remake Parent Trap [2.5 stars].......2006-07-25

If you've seen Parent Trap (either verion), you've see It Takes Two. It is incredibly predictable. Even so, the girls are cute and the story line has plenty of fun and mischief built into it. Pre-teen girls will especially like this movie. There are some elements for adults - at least parents of children - to enjoy.

One small note of caution: there's a subtle but questionable message in this movie. The wicked soon-to-be stepmother of one of the girls is driven away, giving the story its fairytale ending. As that plays out, the message is sent that its good to humiliate and embarrass those that have wronged us . Of course, the revenge exacted on the villainess is all in fun and somewhat deserved; nevertheless, the revenge message is fairly clear. It presents a great opportunity for parents to discuss with their kids the "Golden Rule."

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie!.......2006-07-06

I remember this movie from when i was younger. I really loved the olsen twins so i am purchasing all their movies to re-live my chilhood! They are such funand great to watch as a family! And if u don't have kids they're great to watch by yourself...they're corny but great movies!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-16

Well-done, magnificent example of sensibility combined with technical virtuosism.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating journey.......2007-05-14

This documentary follows the multiple pregnancies of three different women, from conception to shortly after the birth. Rachel (the only one who isn't a first-time mother) is having fraternal twins (a boy and a girl), Jennifer is having triplets (two identical boys plus one fraternal brother who was conceived on a different day), and Julie is having identical quads (girls). All three of these sets of multiples were conceived naturally, even Julie's (the odds of having naturally-conceived identical quads are one in eight million!). Using cutting-edge 4-D technology, we're able to get a fascinating look at just what goes on in the womb during these gestational periods. Not only do we get to see what the embryos/fetuses look like as they develop, but we also get to see the kinds of interactions they have with one another, interactions that vary from up-close and personal (if they're together in the same amnion and chorion, no barriers between them) to only able to feel one another through membranes if they're in separate amnions and chorions.

This documentary is loaded with just about everything you ever might have wanted to know about multiple pregnancies. Topics include the different types of twinning, what might cause conjoined twins, how interactions in utero continue playing out after birth (such as one set of twins in which the dominant twin often kicked his brother, who put his head down on the placenta for comfort instead of fighting back; as they grew up, the submissive twin would go to his room and put his head on the blanket when bullied by the dominant one), why older women are more prone to naturally-conceived multiples (one theory is that the eggs a woman is left with by then are weakened by age and therefore more likely to split), why many twins are mirror images of one another, and how a woman's height affects how close to term she can bring a multiple pregnancy. I knew that sometimes triplets can be carried almost to full term and delivered naturally, but didn't know that the odds are greater for such a thing if the mother is taller. Jennifer, the triplets' mother, was almost six feet tall, though she ended up having to have a C-section that wasn't as close to full term as had been hoped.

In addition to shining a light on the amazing process of development a fetus goes through, it also lets one into the mysterious world of what it's like to actually be in there, and to be on the same amazing journey with one, two, or even three other companions. One can't help but wonder how much these newborn multiples remember of their time in the womb, when they formed a bond like no other with their womb-mates.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-06

I had to watch this movie for a human development course in college. It is the most amazing thing to see actual footage of multiples growing in the womb. I also learned a lot about multiples that I did not previously know. Very good watch! Definitely reccomended.

The sacrifice of a beloved character is just one of many highlights in Nemesis, the 10th feature in the lucrative Star Trek franchise. Enigmatically billed as the beginning of "A Generation's Final Journey," this richly plotted Next Generation adventure maintains the "even number rule" regarding Trek's feature quality, and it's one of the best in the series. It hits its brisk stride when Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Enterprise-E crew encounter Shinzon (Tom Hardy), a younger clone of Picard, rejected by the Romulans as the human weapon of an abandoned conspiracy. Raised on the nocturnal Romulan sister planet Remus, Shinzon now plots revenge against Romulus and Earth but needs Picard's blood to carry out his scheme. A wedding, a childlike "duplicate" Data named B-4 (Brent Spiner), spectacular space battles, and uncommon acts of valor make this a tautly-paced action thriller, poised to pass the franchise (but not quite yet) to a new generation of Starfleet personnel. Die-hard Trekkers will not be disappointed. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not true to the series but..........2007-06-17

its not the worst film I've ever seen. (a few Spoilers below)
The main problems are that the story doesn't hold up to being made as a movie. I could have seen this as a special mini series or something. Everything seemed so THROWN together at the last minute and there were many gaps on continuity from DS9 and the original TNG. I hated the idea of Worf leaving his position with the Klingons to stay with Star Fleet knowing he can never move up in position, no possible way for him to be promoted ever...yet this movie makes it seem like he is doing just that. I liked the idea of him staying with the Klingons as was shown in the last episode of DS9.
What helped me give this movie 3 stars is that the deleted scenes made the movie better in my opinion, and should have been included. That shot with Spot and Worf answered my question as to what would be done with his things and what ever happened to Spot (though I can't see Worf keeping him...they should have had Deanna in the room with Spot and Spot going to her that would have been touching and more plausible). I liked seeing Admiral Janeway too, really helped bring the shows together.
Also it was nice how the extended ending had a new XO come on board and that joke with the captain's chair was nice.
Without the extras, however, I would only give this 2 stars. It was a disappointment for a true fan of the ST universe.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, very dark for a Star Trek Movie.......2007-06-04

I'm not a fan of the dark movies, it may create an evil effect, but also makes it hard for the viewer to enjoy all that there is to be seen. This does live up to the Franchise history. Good battle scenes, conflict between good and evil, and true victory to the one that out thinks or out strategizes the other. I'm glad to see that they continue to bring the "technology" further into the future and that they allow the characters to grow and receive some "promotions" as side stories in it all. All in all, I have to say that I wasn't really disappointed with this movie and have added it to my collection. If you are a Star Trek fan, you should buy it. If you like Sci-Fi movies, you should at least watch it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underapreciated Star Trek Film.......2007-05-15

The final Star Trek film is the most underapreciated in my opinion. I have and always shall be a trekkie. I have all the films and enjoy everyone of them though some are better than others. I have always enjoyed the Romulan stories and for the first time the Romulans are in one of the movies, and it just happens to be the final one. It was a very well done story and is one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Nemesis.......2007-05-06

This was the only S.T. movie I had not seen. Sure glad to have found it and enjoyed it!

3 out of 5 stars PARAMOUNT RAPED THE ORIGINAL ENDING.......2007-05-01

I AM A AVID STAR TREK FAN AND I WAS REALLY DISAPOINTED TO SEE THAT THE DVD VERSION WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE THEATRE VERSION. THERE WAS A HUGE BATTLE SEEN THAT WAS CUT FROM THE DVD VERSION AND I ENJOYED WATCHING IT BUT IT WAS A DISAPOINTMENT ON THE ENDING.

Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Legendary producer / director Dan Curtis (DARK SHADOWS, THE NIGHT STALKER) teams up with writers Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN, BURNT OFFERINGS) to present three tales of horrific suspense in this made-for-television anthology that also showcases the tremendous acting talent of Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST), who plays no less than four distinct roles. In "Julie," an aggressive college student seduces and ultimately blackmails his seemingly shy English professor. In "Millicent and Therese," two polar-opposite sisters become increasingly hell-bent on the undoing of one another. And in "Amelia," a woman falls prey to a murderous Zuni fetish doll.

5 out of 5 stars Tour-de-force for Karen Black........2007-06-23

A fondly remembered cult classic televison movie produced in 1975. A must have for fans of good story telling and of course admirers of the excellent Karen Black. The audio commentary is both informative and entertaining and the featurettes with Karen and Richard Matheson are top-knotch. Fantastic print.

4 out of 5 stars Trilogy of Terror is classic stuff.......2007-06-01

I watched this growing up as a kid.Channel 9 and 11 played this late at night. That Fetish doll was a hoot! All three storie were good but the last one was the best.If you want to see more of the dolls check out Attack of the Beast Creatures. This one, there's an entire island full of them.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-06-01

I remembered this movie from when I was a kid and got such a kick out of watching it again. Didn't scare me the way I remembered, but fun!

5 out of 5 stars Trilogy of Terror.......2007-05-13

I had been waiting for this one to become available on DVD for quite some time. It was well worth the wait! My grown daughter remembers seeing this movie when she was a child, and is delighted to finally own it. Some of my friends had never seen or heard of this movie; but when I shared it with them, they loved it! The kids particularly loved the segment with the doll. Ms. Black delivered 3 excellent performances! The Karen Black commentary and featurette are nice bonuses.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV movie from the 70s.......2007-02-22

The African zulu doll segment is worth buying this DVD for. I remember seeing this TV movie as a kid back in the 70s. There are others TV movies I am looking for: 79 Park Avenue (miniseries), Sweet Hostage with Linda Blair, Wonder Woman with Cathy Lee Crosby.

Product Description

Never has a home team played a World Series under a roof or in front of louder fans. Never in the history of Major League Baseball has the home team won every game of the World Series. Of course, never before had the Minnesota Twins won a World Series, and never would anyone have picked them to improve from a sub-.500 winning percentage to champions in just one season. With a lineup powered by the hard-hitting foursome, a staff anchored by two starting aces and one in the bullpen, a manager whose calm was contagious, and rabid fans who nearly blew the roof off the home field, the Twins throttled baseball with an unmatched home field advantage. Every game of this Twin Cities tale, every pitch, every rafter-rocking home run, and thunderous roar of the Metrodome faithful is digitally preserved in this one-of-a-kind collectible. Unlike certain Cardinals pitchers you may choose to not wear earplugs; however twirling "Homer Hankies" is encouraged. Your viewing of these historic games in intensified with SleeveStats: the perfect companion to the ultimate baseball DVD experience, offering official stats, trivia, and game summaries right on each DVD package. 1987 World Series Trophy Presentation; MVP Presentation to Frank Viola; Post-game Interview with Kirby Puckett; Parade Footage; A History of the Minnesota Twins; SPECIAL GAME FOOTAGE: Twins Clinching American League West Division, Twins Rally for 4 Runs in 8th Inning of ALCS Game 1, The 1987 ALCS Clincher, Harmon Killebrew Throws Out World Series Game 1 First Pitch

5 out of 5 stars Great reprise of the biggest championship in Minnesota History.......2007-06-11

A nice remembrance of a great World Series, Minnesota's first championship since the great Lakers teams of the late '40's and early '50's.

5 out of 5 stars 1987 World Series DVDs.......2007-05-13

I am a big Twins Fan and have been waiting for the World Series DVDs to come out. I never recorded the games and I've always been sorry I haven't. This product is so clear and without commercials, and I've been watching them over and over. It's especially significant to my family and me as they hear me talking about the series and now they can see it for themselves. Thank you so much for having this available.

4 out of 5 stars Sound quality and lack of pre/post-game coverage are only drawbacks.......2007-05-02

Following up on others' reviews, I would agree that the sound quality during the first several innings of Game 6, in particular, is poor. NOTE: the sound on the original TV broadcast of this game was fine (I taped it off of TV at the time). I contacted A&E about this issue, and they said there was nothing they could do about it. My guess is the ABC Sports master tape has degraded in quality over the past 20 years (or they gave A&E a poor copy of it).

Also, the inclusion of pre- and post-game coverage would have made it even better.

Having said all of that, this is still a must-own item for long-time Twins fans. Cardinals fans may want to own it too for historical purposes and footage of solid play by several of their stars at the time, although they should look to the 1982 or 2006 World Series for better highlights of their team.

4 out of 5 stars A Must For Twins Fans!.......2007-04-14

This set contains the complete 1987 ABC Network World Series game coverage. Each of the seven discs comes in its' own case with the box score and game summary of that specific game. I was a bit surprised that the ABC pre-game and post-game shows weren't included. A nice feature is that you can play these DVD's by the half inning if you wish.
The 7th disc also contains nine bonus features, four of which are from the ABC broadcast, and two others were from the NBC coverage of the 1987 AL Championship Series. The other three features were "A History of the Minnesota Twins", the end of the AL West clinching game against Texas, and some of the Minneapolis and St. Paul victory parades. The seven minute "A History of the Minnesota Twins" was disappointing becuse it was so short.
This set is a must for Twins fans. Cardinals fans might not enjoy it quite so much. More general fans might be able to get by with the cheaper MLB Vintage World Series Films: Minnesota Twins 1987 & 1991.

5 out of 5 stars What You'd Expect.......2007-04-11

These are the complete broadcasts of all 7 games played between the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals in the 1987 World Series - 4 games in the Metrodome and 3 games in Busch Stadium. The quality of the broadcasts is very nice, with the exception of the sound during parts of Games 6 & 7. During the first 2.5 innings of Game 6 the sound is really bad and, while not as bad as Game 6, the sound during the first 6.5 innings of Game 7 isn't very good. Al Michaels, Tim McCarver, and Jim Palmer do the call on all 7 games.

I'm a little bit surprised that this set was released before the 1991 Twins vs. Braves series because 3 of these games weren't competitive. Also, it was very cold in Busch Stadium for games 3 & 4, so the crowd enthusiasm is somewhat low. All in all, it's a great trip down memory lane to watch these games again. Let's hope that the good folks at A&E continue to release more and more games in the future.
