America's Sweethearts is just the kind of romantic froth that makes for pleasant viewing on a lazy, rainy day. While Julia Roberts, John Cusack, and Catherine Zeta-Jones offer high-wattage marquee value, costar and cowriter Billy Crystal reworks Singin' in the Rain for latter-day Hollywood, where estranged superstars Gwen (Zeta-Jones) and Eddie (Cusack) reluctantly promote their latest movie by pretending their messily disputed relationship is still going strong. The studio chief (Stanley Tucci) is desperate for a hit, so he hires a seasoned publicist (Crystal) to orchestrate a press junket that will cast everyone in a profitable light. The catch: The director (Christopher Walken) has abducted his own film in an act of artistic extortion, and Gwen's sister and longtime assistant Kiki (Roberts) is the true object of Eddie's desire.

Chaos ensues at the luxury hotel where the junket is scheduled, and America's Sweethearts pokes easy fun at the cynical machinery that keeps Hollywood running. Quotable quips are delivered in abundance, and while Zeta-Jones is readily convincing as a bitchy narcissist, Roberts effortlessly steals the show with her trademark charms. All of which makes America's Sweethearts lightly entertaining, even though it never rises (like Roberts's earlier Notting Hill) to the level of classic romantic comedy, hampered by a script that too often substitutes easy laughs for ripe satirical invention, flashing a phony grin when it should be baring its fangs. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars A Witty, Fun Movie.......2007-05-26

This movie has it all.....It's witty, funny, charming and for the most part has an all star cast. I'm sorry fans, but I do not like Billy Crystal at all and feel like it was a waste having him in the movie. However, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, and Hank Azaria have such a wonderful on screen chemistry together, making this movie a must see and a great purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars Funny Movie.......2007-03-31

I brought this movie in Hollywood video. it was on sale. I didn't know what to expect, but only that it had some of my favorite actors in the movie.
I was laughing like crazy. This movie very funny. Everything was crazy from the moment they went to the Press Junket.

Poor Hector, the latin lover. he is nuts.

    5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2006-07-18

    "America's Sweethearts" is co-written by Billy Crystal and manages to explore the whole celebrity-couple hypocrisy. Even though this movie was made in 2001, that hypocrisy is still very much around. Look around;
Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes, Jennifer Aniston-Vince Vaughan, and Nicole Kidman-Keith Urban, just to name a few, are all products of the media's attention. This movie is cheesy, stupid, and pokes fun at what's going on and is really, truly funny. Billy Crystal plays a veteran press agent named Lee, who has just been fired by his boss Dave Kingman (Stanley Tucci, 'The Devil Wears Prada'). As he's leaving, Dave invites him into the screening room to see the final movie starring celebrity couple Gwen Harrison (Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, Best Supporting Actress 'Chicago') and Eddie Thomas (John Cusack, 'The Ice Harvest'). They were america's sweethearts, but not they've broken up. As they sit down to watch the movie, they discover that the film has been taken hostage by it's crazed director Hal Weiddman (the wonderful Christopher Walken) and will not be shown until the press junket. In order to distract the press, Lee has to make sure he can get Gwen and Eddie back together...Or at least, make it look like they have. Lee enlists the help of Gwen's sister/personal assistant Kiki (Oscar winner Julia Roberts, Best Actress 'Erin Brockovich'), who secretly harbors a crush on Eddie. While the film does follow the basic romantic-comedy formula, it works and it is funny. Hank Azaria ('Along Came Polly' & 'The Simpsons) turns up playing Gwen's spanish boyfriend and is of course, hilarious. Walken is perfect as the crazed director and Cusack, Zeta-Jones, Roberts, & Crystal are all so likeable...This movie is kind of hard to resist.

    5 out of 5 stars Enchanting!.......2006-06-16

It is no surprise why Billy Crystal is one of America's Sweethearts, because we in America just love him. I really wish that this movie could have had a little less of Julia Roberts and John Cusack, and a little more of Billy's shenanigans like he does so delightfully during the Oscars. Maybe he could have sung a few songs about Catherine Zeta Jones (and even made silly references to how old her husband--Michael Douglas--is), and done a snappy little dance. That would have made this movie slightly more enjoyable.

But even though they didn't do that, I would pay money to see Julia Roberts fall in love with anything--even a plate of yams--because she is just so down-to-earth. In real life I just know she's like any other normal person, because that's what she says to the paparazzi all the time. This is clearly the role that everyone will remember her for.

5 out of 5 stars For Comedy Lovers.......2006-05-24

This guilty pleasure has the consistency of cotton candy and is every bit as delightful. Those who would put it under the microscope, as if it were The Bicycle Thief, Battleship Potemkin, or Day For Night, really could benefit from a week off - this is a screwball comedy for heaven's sake. And what fun it is.

Consider the dream cast, Julia Roberts (seriously threatening to act), Billy Crystal (borsht belt not yet dead - just not feeling so well), Catherine Zeta-Jones (superb - her best performance ever), John Cusack (always on time), Hank Azaria (fantastic), Stanley Tucci (consistently funny), Christopher Walken (marvelous as a deranged lunatic - typecasting?), Alan Arkin (still at it, terrific), and Seth Green (impeccable as a sleazy studio hack). The script is by Billy Crystal and Peter Tolan.

For Crystal, who has spent his entire life in show business, these red carpets are very well worn and familiar, which makes it easy for him to set up smart and often biting jokes lampooning celebrity superficiality, falseness, backstabbing, and profound insecurity. That he and Tolan were unable to create a credible plot to hang these jokes on, like ornaments on a tree, would be a problem if the film had aspirations other than to amuse - as it is, the trip itself provides so much fun that the lack of destination, or even a reason to get there, is not terribly consequential.

The credit for this goes to a series of marvelous performances, led by Catherine Zeta-Jones who plays a gloriously narcissistic movie star. She inhabits this role so unapologetically that you can almost see her wink at the camera as if to say, "Yes, I know I'm playing myself, and you know it too." Julia Roberts, playing her wallflower sister, is funny casting at the very least. Remarkably, she gives the film one of its only sincere and stirring performances. The reliable John Cusack is likeable as a dazed celebrity struggling to juggle dualities, torn between two sisters, movie star smile barely concealing a disintegrating personality. Hank Azaria, as the staggeringly dim Latin lover Ms. Zeta-Jones has picked up for the moment like a glossy magazine, is so good that he practically walks off with the movie in his brief scenes.

Everything about the film is false, a false romance between "America's Sweethearts" holds a studio together, the press is invited on a junket to promote a movie that doesn't exist; indeed, part of the film's comedy and pleasure is that it rewards our most wicked suspicions about Hollywood. Ultimately it's your choice. You can watch a depressed Swede play chess with a guy in a Speedo and a cape, or you can watch Catherine Zeta-Jones fire off zingers penned by a latter-day Henny Youngman. Either way, it's pretty funny.

The following review appears in the Internet Movie Database: "I saw this movie for the first time tonight....WOW! I never really liked these two in their other movies but this one is great and the color... superb. My favorite part of the visuals are the on location shots of New York in 1938 IN COLOR! Amazing that the front of NBC still looks the same as it did then. The songs in this picture are much better than most of the "Mountie" movies they did. And Ray Bolger (a year away from "The Wizard of Oz") just steals the opening scene of the movie... too bad they couldn't find another spot for him to dance in this movie. And Frank Morgan (also a year away from "The Wizard of Oz")....how can anybody not like Frank Morgan as the worried producer. He is so much fun in every movie he is in. It is just ashamed that MGM and the other movie studios didn't use color more in these great old movies. What a treasure they would have become. It certainly helps me see the world of my parents and grandparents in real life color, instead of dull black and white. See this movie if you get the chance... just for the fun of it."

The following review appears in the Internet Movie Database: "Saw this film recently on a Turner Classic Movies TV broadcast and was dazzled once again by an incredibly deluxe production number in which the color palette was limited to aquas, subtle shades of pinks and rose, dazzling whites and ivories and that's about it. It's a song, mounted as part of an operetta, "Ziguener" ("The Gypsy"), in which Jeanette MacDonald is pursued over an enormous, multi-level stage by a flotilla of violin-playing, elaborately costumed musicians as she trills her heart out. It's Hollywood extravagance at its most eye-filling, and the gorgeous Technicolor justifies the Oscar nominations for art direction and color cinematography which this film received. M-G-M gave its "Singing Sweethearts," Jeanette and Nelson Eddy, a lovely vehicle with this one and its like will probably never grace a first-run screen ever again. Thank goodness that TCM occasionally exhumes this one from its vault to delight us every once in a while."

The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition: "This film has poignant interaction, on screen and off. Jane Powell was at the beginning of her joyful musical career and Jeanette MacDonald, a highly revered musical sweetheart, was at the end of hers. The two play a mother and daughter and a tender highlight of the film was when they sang SPRINGTIDE, blending their beautiful voices together. Jeanette, estranged from her husband for many years, falls for a pianist and orchestra leader, Jose Iturbi. Jane and her two sisters are determind to break up this relationship and bring their father back for a reunion. Jeanette goes on a cruise to clear her head and her daring daughters continue their shenanigans. Weaving in and out of one obstacle after another, all finally ends well. After all, this is a musical. The film overflows with really beautiful music. Jeanette gives us WHERE THERE'S LOVE and SWEETHEARTS. Jose adds RUMANIAN RHAPSODY IN A, with his sister, Impala, followed by LIEBESTRAUM, HUNGARIAN FANTASY and THE RITUAL FIRE DANCE. Jane opens with ALMA MATER and continues with Leo Delibes PASSEPIED, Victor Herbert's FLEURETTE and a vibrant JE VEUX VIVRE from Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet". You'll also hear a honky-tonk ROUTE SIXTY-SIX by Powell and the sparkling DICKEY BIRD SONG sung by all the ladies.A splendid musical venture!"

If you like musicals and are Young at Heart, you will fall in love with the beautiful Eleanor Powell and be mesmerized by her athletic prowess. Throw in Cole Porter's elegant, rhythmic music and you're hooked. Forget a complicated plot; if that's what you seek, find a Russian play. For the gals, there's that handsome baritone, the inimitable Nelson Eddy. You cannot lose. "Rosalie" is among the best, most uplifting of Ms. Powell's movies. She was a lush, radiant 25 when she made this movie and a consummate athlete in peak form and probably the best female tap dancer of all time. After God made her, He threw away the mold. (See her ballet -- of sorts -- in Broadway Melody of 1936; Double WOW.) Normally I oppose cloning humans; for her, I'd make an exception. West Point Footbal Hero Dick Thorpe falls in love with a pretty Vassar girl who is secretly a princess (Eleanor Powell)in the tiny Baltic kingdom of Romanza. Her evil mum wants a forced marriage for her to a semi-royal who is not in love with Rosalie. Thorpe, not knowing this, serenades her, flys to meet her in Romanza only to find she is now betrothed to another. Love wins out, of course and there's GREAT dancing and music, and I DO mean great. Yes, there's corn and her father-king is more than a little batty, but that's a small price to pay for the best dancing legs you'll ever see. Sinatra was right!"

This was the fifth time around for this story. Originally, it was a play by David Belasco in 1905; it was made as three silents as well as an opera. In this version, Eddy and MacDonald were at the height of their popularity: their finest effort - MAYTIME - was filmed the year prior. The screenplay isn't exactly superlative and the direction drags a bit, but fans of the great singing duo should still find themselves semi-enthralled. Jeanette owns a rough gambling saloon and Nelson is a Zorro-like character - but on the wrong side of the law. They fall in love, naturally. The best number in the film is the elaborate MARIACHI number. Buddy Ebsen, who plays Alabama, is in fine form and gives the movie some much-needed comedic moments. Monty Wooley can be seen briefly as the Governor. Melodies include Liszt's beautiful LIEBESTRAUM, THE WIND IN THE TREES, SUN-UP TO SUNDOWN & AVE MARIE....{What a deux mixture!!} Oddly enough, Ray Bolger was originally singing and dancing in this film, but his scenes were deleted. Why is this strange? We all know that Bolger went on into cinema immortality as the Scarecrow the next year in M-G-M's enduring classic WIZARD OF OZ. But many forget that Ebsen was the studio's first choice for the Tinman. Because he was highly allergic - he nearly died - to the aluminum dust mixed into paste for the Tinman's make-up, he was ultimately replaced with Jack Haley."

1 out of 5 stars Why did she make this movie?.......2006-09-05

While her acting was good, even with an edge, I couldn't see the point for her making the film. It was horribly disappointing, not uplifting at all. I kept wanted to turn it off, yet I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't in my opinion.

              4 out of 5 stars Janeane Garofalo's best performance.......2006-01-22

Sweethearts is worth seeing for one reason-Janeane Garofalo (she also co-produced the film). She gives her best performance of her career. She plays a complicated, very emotional woman (not unlike herself) who is looking for a companion for what may be her last night on Earth, as she says she wants to commit suicide. She may be looking for someone to save her, or maybe not. Janeane's performance is a tour-de-force of all human emotions, and it's quite remarkable. She shows depth and substance that was indeed very rarely shown in the "ironic" 1990's. Much of Janeane's film work is awful, which is really a shame, as she actually has talent (which is on vivid display here). I never understood why she became a comic, as she has a very serious and intelligent side to her. Comics have great difficulty in taking anything serious, and are, more often than not, not particularly bright (except for the great ones, like Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, etc., etc). Luckily, Janeane got into acting, which is where she belongs. Unfortunately, the film itself is a little sloppy at times, and the lead actor (Mitch Rouse) is barely adequate. His performance is very weak, especially when compared to the magnificence of Janeane's performance, and it subsequently drags the film down. The comic relief of Margaret Cho and Bobcat Goldwaith is out of place as well. For some reason, the film never made it to theaters, and was released directly to video around 1998. Luckily, it's on DVD now. While the film itself isn't perfect, Garofalo's performance is really something to behold....

5 out of 5 stars Simply Her Best!.......2005-10-28

This movie blew me away. I either like a movie, or I don't, but I never spend hours obsessing over a story... I obsessed over this one. I thought it was going to be a movie along the same lines as 'The Truth About Cats & Dogs' (which I really liked), but I was way off the mark. Once 'Sweethearts' was over, I hit rewind and watched it again. When it ended, I made my husband watch it with me. He hit rewind and watched it again. It is such a thought-provoking story, a true antithesis of the basic Hollywood romantic comedy. The foundation of the story, the relationship that develops, is beautiful because it doesn't sugar-coat anything. Janeane's performance is flawless, and you feel each moment with her. The ending is gut-wrenching, but is integral to the story... If it were changed to match the banality of the "Hollywood Ending", the movie would suffer greatly. Do yourself a favor and buy (or at least rent!) this movie. After being a rare item for almost eight years, it is finally available on DVD. Margaret Cho and Mitch Rouse are wonderful, as well.

5 out of 5 stars the antidote to vapid romantic comedy.......2005-06-30

When I 1st rented this, it was due entirely to Janeane Garofalo being in it ( I'd watch her read the paper ) & what seemed like an interesting, off-beat story idea. It is the only movie that has given her enough substance to really sink her teeth into on screen & a pleasant suprise for those who like their entertainment dark & complicated.

The Set-up : An average guy ( Mitch Rouse ) places a personal ad. A gal responds ( Jeanane Garofalo ) & what results is the 'blind date from hell' including a gun, a hostage & a caustic bartender ( Margaret Cho ).

What transpires feels almost like a play, sparse and character driven. There is some comedy ( low key ) and romance ( unexpected ), but what really makes this stand out is some dark, intense, emotional scenes that don't pull their punches & an ending that avoids tidy completion in favor of ambiguous thought provocation.

Kudos to Aleks Horvat who has writing / directing / producing credits - he really went out of his way to create something different without insulting anyone's intelligence, & Jeanene Garofalo, for giving what has to be one of her finest performances.

Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles can be easily turned off. The following review appears in Amazon for the VHS edition:"The story of BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938 is not so much zany as just simply bizarre. Raised on a horse farm where she also somehow learned to sing and dance, Eleanor Powell goes to New York in search of fame and fortune on the Great White Way, where she meets (a) George Murphy and Buddy Ebsen, two horse trainers who are also dancers; (b) Robert Taylor, a producer determined to star her in his new show; and (c) one of the horses from her farm. When the horse comes up lame, Eleanor rescues him--and before too long it becomes necessary for the horse to win the big race in order to finance the show! Eleanor Powell was MGM's great dancing star of the era, George Murphy was one of the screen's most reliable hoofers, and Buddy Ebsen was reknowned as a character actor with an eccentric dance style--all three have tremendous star quality and they generate several charming moments. But today the film is chiefly recalled for two supporting players: Sophie Tucker and Judy Garland. Sophie Tucker had been a great stage star for more than 20 years when this film was made, and MELODY offers one of her rare screen appearances: with her no-nonsense, no-holds-barred style, she leaves little doubt about why she was so celebrated--especially when she launches into her signature song "Some of These Days." Garland, on the other hand, was just really beginning her film career, a slightly chunky teenager with a great big voice--and after putting it through the bullseye with a knockout performance of "Everybody Sing" she nailed the audiences of the day with her famous version of "You Made Me Love You," sung to a photograph of Clark Gable."

                "America's Sweethearts" is co-written by Billy Crystal and manages to explore the whole celebrity-couple hypocrisy. Even though this movie was made in 2001, that hypocrisy is still very much around. Look around;

Quite memorable as one of the best heartbreakers (tearjerkers, if you like) out of 1930s Hollywood, the story finds Howard's character living alone for three decades following the death of his beloved (Shearer). An unhappy man, he becomes guardian to his niece (Shearer again), the spitting image of his almost-wife. When she falls in love with the son of the killer (both men played by March), who naturally looks like Howard's nemesis, sparks fly and tragedy ensues."
