Sunset Strip would like nothing more than to become a sex, drugs, and rock & roll American Graffiti for the 1972 Los Angeles scene, right down to the flashy "where are they now?" coda. The film follows the lives of fringe players in the music industry who crisscross paths over a 24-hour period. Funky fashion designer Anna Friel and colorblind photographer Michael Baker are the ostensible leads, best friends whose hopeless affairs and quickies blind them to the growing attraction between them. Orbiting around these two are naive young rock & roll dreamer Nick Stahl; cynical, substance-abusing songwriter Rory Cochrane; Afro-wearing, jive-talking would-be impresario Adam Goldberg; country-fried rocker Jared Leto; and Scottish art-rock superstar Tommy J. Flanagan. Director Adam Collis, working from a script cowritten by Randall Jahnson, who penned The Doors for Oliver Stone, tries to capture the easygoing, offhanded quality George Lucas brought to American Graffiti. It's an entertaining piece with a restless undercurrent of characters stumbling around for their place in this hyped-up, hopped-up world, but Collis has little of Lucas's deft touch and the film ultimately has little to say about the characters or the period. This lightweight flashback, however, does come accessorized with groovy fashions, hip haircuts, and loads of rock music (some of it the real thing, the rest modern retro compositions). --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars NBC made a big mistake cancelling S60.......2007-07-02

I've never been so quickly hooked by a TV show. S60 is too good of a show to be cancelled after just one season.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite shows.......2007-07-02

I am happy that this show will be out on dvd. But, the title seems to imply it's been canceled!

Please tell me the title of this dvd is a mistake- it's just season one right? The show can't have been canceled, it's too good.

5 out of 5 stars What is NBC Thinking?.......2007-06-29

I didn't even know the show was canceled until I saw this listed under "Coming Soon" in an Amazon DVD email and went to the product page, which proclaimed the title of the DVD set as "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - The Complete Series".

This was a thought-provoking show with great characters and wonderful, witty, fast-paced dialogue. Matthew Perry shone in his role, as did Bradley Whitford. Even the Sarah Paulson character, Harriet Hayes, managed to not alienate me, and I came to like the fact that a character like hers was written into the show.

In the past, quality shows with poor ratings, but lots of merit, were given second chances - sometimes even third and fourth chances - but now it appears that it's one strike, you're out. I think this truly says a lot about the quality of television today, that even a quality show is given 3 months to make it - as Studio 60 was. Any sensible person knows that, no matter what the product, you must give it 6-12 months at the very least to show its worth. Studio 60 wasn't given that chance.

In a network lineup of stupid reality shows, which I refuse to waste my time on (the only one I've ever viewed, other than trailers, is "The Apprentice", which has also been canceled - perhaps because it was a little less silly than all the others?) it's upsetting to come to the realization that NBC has actually done what "Studio 60" was talking about; namely, canceling quality and most probably substituting quantity. I shudder to think what silly reality show will take its place: perhaps something really great like "I Want to Date a Million Airheads" or "Sink to My Level".

Whatever it is, I won't be watching it...

5 out of 5 stars BEST TV SHOW IN THE LAST 10 YEARS - Thank God they are at least preserving it on DVD.......2007-06-29

Few words can capture the excellence at play on all levels of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. From writing to acting to directing, this show boasts the best that TV has to offer. That NBC was idiotic enough to cancel it is beyond me (yea - good luck NBC with your new comedy based on the Caveman commericals - now THAT's quality!)

The cast is stellar and bring you episode after episode of engaging, intellegent charactors that you care about and can have both fun and drama with. Every member of this ensemble is worthy of your interest and care.

Think of this as the best mini-series ever produced and grab your copy of Studio 60 Season One at whatever cost - where ever you can.

It is simply the best.

And goodbye NBC - you've given up on excellence and I've given up on you.

5 out of 5 stars Just saw the last show.......2007-06-29

Just watched the last show. I still can't believe that it has been cancelled. Witty, intelligent, perhaps sometimes a bit "snotty" but always entertaining. Perhaps with all the drivel on television that now passes for entertainment, this show was just too smart and required the viewer to actually think about what was being presented, is why it failed. Could it actually be that if "West Wing" was first being premiered this fall that it would also not last one season? The chemistry between Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford needs to be seen. By the way, the ending was absolutely perfect. I really wish that one of the intelligent cable channels had picked this show up. How ironic that while Studio 60 was winding down, NBC had the nerve to show commercials for some really stupid show about singing bee?

Taken together, Richard Pryor's concert films, the essential Live in Concert, the virtuoso Live on the Sunset Strip, and even the lesser Here and Now, provide a more incisive autobiographical portrait of the groundbreaking comedian than the fictionalized Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling. In Sunset Strip, Pryor relates two life-changing experiences. The first is his trip to "the motherland," Africa. As funny as is the routine in which Pryor gives voice to a couple of cheetahs poised to prey on unsuspecting gazelles, he brings the audience up short with a moving revelation that leads him to forswear ever again calling another black person the "N-word." The second, of course, is his near-fatal freebasing accident, which Pryor at first jokingly passes off as an accident involving milk and cookies. Then, he takes the audience step by harrowing step through his growing cocaine addiction (abetted by his untrustworthy pipe which speaks to him in reassuring tones), alienation from friends, including the formidable Jim Brown ("Whatcha gonna do?"), the explosion that resulted in third-degree burns over the upper half of his body, and finally, the agonizing rehab. It is even more unflinching and savagely funny than his Live in Concert routine about his heart attack. Other memorable bits include his experiences as a 19-year-old stand-up comedian working at a Mafia-owned club, a monologue from one of his signature characters, Mudbone, and his visit to a penitentiary while filming Stir Crazy. Sunset Strip captures Pryor's triumphant return to the stage. He is a survivor, unbowed, winning this round over the demons that plagued him throughout his career. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Awsome, the king.......2007-05-07

What can you say about a legend of comedy. an awsome DVD, extremely funny.

5 out of 5 stars Peerless Pryor Proves Perfect.......2007-04-18

Richard Pryor was beyond funny and this show proves it. The quickness of his mind, the incomparable quality of his voice and his ability to mimic, his timing, his honesty...funny is just the beginning of appreciating Richard Pryor. Here is a guy famous for dropping N-bombs throughout his career, publicly declaring to never use the word again. And this was in 1982...25 years ago! Think of the latest news involving Don Imus, of Michael Richards' onstage comedy rant using the N-word...Pryor was a quarter-century ahead of all the gangsta rappers in moving past negative racial epithets. He seems to have no defenses whatsoever about himself or his behavior in this filmed concert. His imitation of a Mafia clubowner is about as good as comedy gets. Pryor to my mind set the bar so high maybe only Eddie Murphy can attempt the heights of comedy Pryor reached in his lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Laugh Until it HURTS!.......2006-11-23

I first saw this in a campus film festival. This has got to be one of the FUNNIEST routines I have ever watched! I laughed so hard I thought I'd break my ribs from laughing. Richard Pryor was a gifted comedian and a hell of a story teller! His Africa routine and the one about the wino was just too funny for words. I was actually gasping for breath between laughs on this one.

Although Pryor used rude language, that still does not take anything away from the sheer humor of his stories and wickedly funny brand of story telling. He even jokes about his own then precarious health as well as the dissolution of his marriage and how his perspectives in general changed when he went to Africa. He could take the most serious topics and convert them into sheer hilarity. To this day I can't watch him for 5 minutes without keeling over laughing.

Don't drink anything before you watch this movie. If you fear you might spontaneously urinate while laughing, then you might want to wait a few hours after you've had any liquids.

5 out of 5 stars Larry The Cable Guy funnier than Richard Pryor? Never........2006-09-20

I must first preface my comments by saying that I think Larry the Cable Guy is funny guy, but he is no Richard Pryor. I am a white anglo-saxon who thinks that Richard Pryor was one of the most funny people who ever lived, and if you asked Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, or Ron White who was the better comedian I think they would all pick Richard Pryor because Rich could find humor in the most unlikeliest sources, whereas Larry is rather obvious in his basis for humor. Good though, but not as profound as Richard Pryor. This along with the other two Richard Pryor stand up films should be the proof of what a comedian is all about. Yes, Rich used rough language, but listen to words between the cuss words, he was a very smart comic who had all the ablities needed to be the legend he was.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in Live Comedy.......2006-08-30

omgosh, I can't believe some one said the cable guy is funnier than Richard Pryor.. this country is definately going to hell in a handbasket! LOL!!!!!

Quite possibly - the greatest live stand up performances in history. Period. If you don't "get" humor -- then get the cable guy stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Misses the Era With a Wretched Script.......2006-08-21

I can't believe previous reviews of this film. Sure, there are some talented actors involved, but that can't save an extremely bad script. Had they had something to work with, this could have been good. But what an embarrassing disaster this turns out to be for all involved!!

I was very familiar with the Sunset Strip circa 1968 - 1975. This movie misses the mark completely. It is so wrong! Too bad too, because on the surface, it could have an been excellent period piece. But, like the Doors, the more recent Brian Jones biopic disaster, and many other so called rock releated period pieces, it fails due to the lack of care, knowledge, and plain self-indulgence of the makers.

So to all involved in the writing, directing and production of this film - [...]!! YOU GOT THE WHOLE DAMN THING ALL WRONG!!!

To all potential buyers wanting an accurate view of the Strip and the times supposedly represented you won't find it here - steer clear of this piece of dung. Even if you don't care about accuracy, this film is just plain lousy. It should have never been made. JUNK! Believe me, I wouldn't want you wasting your time or money on this. Don't even rent, you'll be in for a huge disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars 5 out of 10.......2004-08-14

Sunset Strip was a good try but didn't really satisfy my experience. Seeing Sunset Strip increased my admiration for Boogie Nights and The Doors, which both were done brilliantly, given the circumstances of trying to capture the `70's feelings while being in the 90's. Sunset Strip comes short on few things. I am not feeling sure where the movie was telling me. The lack of meaning in the film also had let me down. The characters were fair but slightly corny. Seeing Jared Leto trying to be Brad Pitt gives me a "rolling my eyes" look cause there is no way he can be Brad Pitt, no matter how hard he tries. There were a few genuine comedic scenes that gave a good amount of energy to get the movie going. Although short to the end, the ending was too abrupt. Overall, I feel the movie gave it a good try. Really, there is nothing much of good or bad to comment on.

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2003-07-29

I liked it because it has Rory Cochrane. So there.

3 out of 5 stars doesn't stack up.......2002-08-24

This is another movie about the 60s/70s with all the sex, drugs, and rock & roll. But this one doesn't quite stack up to the others. There are two storylines, that never really converge. I'd say the acting is ok, it's an ensemble cast, but no big names in there, nor any stellar performances. The soundtrack is good, but other than that, this movie doesn't add anything that those that came before have. Maybe check it out on cable.

2 out of 5 stars Not the worst, but..........2002-08-06

I rented this movie with the sole intention of seeing what Rory Cochrane's been up to since "Empire Records". Nice to know he's still playing the disaffected youth, only grown to full-blown sociopathic, self-destructive adulthood. I didn't think the movie was terrible in and of itself, hence two stars instead of one. I was amused by the costuming (I almost want to own all of Hot Lava's clothes), really liked some of the camera work, got a kick out of the soundtrack and loved the scene where Zack and the busboy start playing guitar. Still, the dialogue wasn't particularly inspired, for the life of me I couldn't figure out WHY Michael was in love with Tammy, the musician characters were entirely one-dimensional (though I do agree with whoever it was who said Jared Leto was the best actor in this lot) and was left hollow by the tidy little notecards at the end of the movie telling the outcome of everyone's lives. As for Felix...oh, Rory...I was so disappointed. This character could've been the muse/honesty barometer/fairy godfather, and there are hints of that side of him, i.e. when he takes it on himself to get Michael and Tammy together. Instead he just comes across as hostile and smelly, occasionally taking the time to randomly do things that might be construed as benevolent if done by someone who wasn't so clearly misanthropic. Perhaps the best way to watch this is as the appetizer for "Almost Famous". Just enough '70s flavor to get you going, but nowhere near enough to eclipse the real article.

4 out of 5 stars Lost soul in Hollywood, so what else is new?.......2007-02-16

It was interesting that this movie depicted a vicious argument between its own producer and the subject of the film (Rodney Bingenheimerheimenschmitt). Are these guys mired in a pit of self-referentialism and petty comeuppance as they both try to claw their way out of the quicksand of nothingness and not-getting-noticed-ness? Pathetic. Actually, if the movie is true to its subject, I felt sorry for Rodney, but not because he failed to become famous or extraordinarily rich by his grab for fame (his music club did make a dollar here and there on the more talented). I was saddened to see that he was so self-deluded in the more personal aspects of his life, such as his unrequited love for a lowly woman who was a pathetic nobody and had another boyfriend, his detachment from his estranged family, and his longing for acceptance by a fame-obsessed, autograph-seeking mother. A great analysis of a lost soul, and an important message for today's youth.

    2 out of 5 stars He's so boring.......2006-08-25

me and my best friend ashley watched this over a year ago and we were bored to tears. Its not that the film is made bad its just that the subject Mr. B is soooooooo boring. I could not imagine what all these rock stars loved about him and why they wanted to hang with him other than getting their songs on the radio.

    5 out of 5 stars Rodney, Rodney.........2006-06-07

Wonderful feel to this accurate Bio-Documentary. Rare accurate look into LA music scene.
Most Uber-Hipsters knew Rodney who still lives in a world of a 16 year old fan.
Warholian Rodney can still get away with wearing skin tight pants at (cough) years old where others can't.
He's the real deal. To anyone who makes fun of him I say this: Rodney had all the girls and you didn't. heh
Very gracious of Bowie to talk about RB being his intro to LA and responsible for all early airplay of his demo tapes.

How many rock personalities can say they hung out with all four beatles, was the double for Davey Jones, was present at David Bowie's first L.A. gig,got Elvis to come to his club, gave Robert Plant competition with women, and introduced such acts as Blondie,The Sex pistols and even Coldplay to fm radio? The answer, only one....Rodney Bingenheimer! This documentary traces the life of the famous Los Angeles DJ from his childhood years to the early days in the music scene to the glam rock days when he once owned one of L.A.'s most hottest club in the 1970's to his present days as one of KROQ (Los Angeles) radio's most loved Discjockeys. Good film on one of the icons that broke a number of bands of yesterday and today. The story of a good person that wanted nothing in return for the love of music!

If you are a music fan you want to watch this! The extras are worth the purchase alone with great interviews that are candid and up front!

What could've been a great concert DVD turns out to be only 30 minutes long. Considering that Slim Jim, Lemmy and Danny B. have performed together before, there should've been more to it.

Dave Chappelle: For What It's Worth finds the Comedy Central superstar in performance at San Francisco's legendary Winterland, where he's welcomed with a huge ovation. Easing into his set, Chappelle shares a few observations about the city itself, noting there's nothing tender about the Tenderloin District: "You've got people smoking crack while sitting in front of Starbucks." Chappelle's inspiration dips a bit after that, as the subject of sex with monkeys and smoking weed with Indians doesn't quite reach his usual standards. Then, suddenly, he's on top of his game again, his material like an echo of vintage Lenny Bruce as he discusses why whites drink grape juice and blacks drink "grape drink," why police harassment has led him to believe in impromptu alibis, and why the culture of celebrity should stay away from real-world issues: "Maybe Jah Rule doesn't have the answers we want in a disaster." --Tom Keogh

          Description

Dave Chappelle: For What It's Worth: Comedian Dave Chappelle does what he does best in this outrageous and hilarious standup performance, which allows him to really push the envelope and go even farther than he does on his TV show. Taped in San Francisco at the famed Fillmore, Chappelle lets loose on such topics as black celebrities, what it's like to have raunchy fans of his TV show approach him while he's trying to enjoy Disneyland with his kids, Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant and crackheads, of course.

Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip: If Richard Pryor were accused of being the funniest man in America, this film of his incredible stage act would be Exhibit A. It is proof beyond the shadow of a doubt! Shot live at the Hollywood Palladium, the film captures all the excitement, lunacy and electric force of a Pryor performance. And though he's the only star of this hilarious show, he's never alone on stage. With him is his amazing array of characterizations as he talks about his trip to Africa in search of his roots, his early days playing one-night gigs in Mafia-owned clubs and strip joints, and numerous other outrageous topics. Finally, he talks about Pryor on Fire - a recounting of the accident which nearly took his life -an episode he relates with wit and a touch of poignancy. You'll laugh like you've never laughed before!
