Translating Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean character from British television to the big screen takes a bit of a toll, but there are some hilarious sequences in this popular comedy. Bean, a boy-man twit with a knack for getting into difficult binds (and then making them worse and worse and worse), is a London museum guard who is sent to Los Angeles in the company of the famous painting Whistler's Mother. He's mistaken as an art expert by the well-meaning curator (Peter MacNicol) of an L.A. museum, but Bean's famously eccentric behavior soon causes the poor guy to almost lose his family and job. The insularity of Bean's TV world is sacrificed in this film, and that change diminishes some of the character's appeal. But Atkinson is a man naturally full of comedy, and he doesn't let his fans down. --Tom Keogh

The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second.

To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which, The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). The LOTR extended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

Awesome collection of this masterpiece, lord of the rings set as all available behind the scenes and extra we want, and the movie with extended version, what more can you want?

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece that will go down in history.......2007-07-01

There is a reason why these 3 films got Best Picture nominations (and a win) 3 years in a row as well as winning 11 Oscars in its final year. THESE FILMS ARE AMAZING. Return of the King is the best followed by Fellowship and then Two Towers, but all get 5 stars, placing it as one of the best films ever made. The extended scenes are not really useful but some (like Saruman in "King") are good. The special features makes paying the extra price worth it. Excellent films

5 out of 5 stars I Wish Amazon Has 10 stars to select!.......2007-06-27

The title says it all. This movie trilogy deserve more than 5 stars and this trilogy is the greatest, the best etc etc movie ever made by one of the greatest director.

Miss this kind of movie so much. Hope the will be more from Peter Jackson

5 out of 5 stars A jewel in your shelf.......2007-06-26

this is one of the best products in the dvd market out there. Don't miss the chance to get one before they are gone like the collectors editions with the polystone figures. Which are not in stock anymore.

So far we've watched the first movie. The extra footage is great and holds true to the books. I would recommend this for any fan of LOTR.

A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahrenheit 451-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression: If no one feels anything, no one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbors. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/dueling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but Equilibrium should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. --Tom Keogh

Description

Delivering awesome high-tech action in the power-packed style of THE MATRIX and MINORITY REPORT, EQUILIBRIUM stars Christian Bale (REIGN OF FIRE) and Taye Diggs (CHICAGO) in a thrilling look at a future where the only crime is being human! In an attempt to end wars and maintain peace, humankind has outlawed the things that trigger emotion -- literature, music, and art. To uphold the law, a special breed of police is assigned to eliminate all transgressors. But when the top enforcer (Bale) misses a dose of an emotion-blocking drug, he begins to realize that things are not as they seem! Also starring Sean Bean (THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and Emily Watson (RED DRAGON).

(this is what Could happen with censorship! you have been warned!)

4 out of 5 stars I didn't understand what was up with the hero's kid, but ..........2007-06-12

So I missed out on exactly what was going on with the little boy even though I watched the movie twice. I forgive myself for not getting it and I'll watch it again until I *do* get it.

I enjoyed this movie for its thought-provoking creation of a maybe-future. To feel or not to feel? To shoot the puppy or save the little fella cuz it wags its tail and licks your face? To turn on your neighbor cuz he's not like you or ask what drummer he follows?

Me, I enjoyed the drama of the government control, its keep-the-status-quo army of trained killers, and the "what works best for the good of all" plotline in general. Plenty of action held my attention throughout.

Highly recommended for sci-fi/action fans.

5 out of 5 stars Happy, kick-butt-and-take-names kind of equilibrium.......2007-05-23

The trailers for EQUILIBRIUM kick a**. Guns, explosions, Matrix-style shots, a futuristic world, Taye Diggs and Christian friggin' Bale. But while the trailer looked attractive, it's well-known that many a polished trailer has masked a giant turd of a movie. I was willing to take that chance, however, and picked up this flick one night to see if it had the goods.

The result? One h*ll of an action flick, that's what!

It's not enough that EQUILIBRIUM was rife with things that went BOOM. The fact that it fused action with martial arts made it that much cooler, much like what the Matrix did by melding martial arts and cyberpunk. From there, it held me on the edge of my sofa with a suspenseful man-versus-Big Brother plot wrapped inside the bigger theme of feelings and emotions and how mankind would be nothing without them. Bale's character misses a dose of his emotion-numbing medication one day and--bada-bing--the tide of revolt against Big Brother has turned.

And the ending didn't disappoint, although it was a bit easier for Bale to save the world than I thought it should be. There was also A LOT of dummy dialogue that was used to bring the audience up to speed on the backstory. Very clumsy and awkward. The biggest complaint, however, focuses on the irony of many of the bad guys getting angry at Bale and the freedom fighters. In a world where emotion is a criminal offense, why doesn't anyone take them in?

Now I'm not saying EQUILIBRIUM is a great movie in strictly cinematic terms. It's imperfect and flawed. But in terms of an action picture? Rarely does it get better than this. If you like your action fast, explosive, and hardcore, do yourself a favor and rent EQUILIBRIUM.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Those Movies That Slipped Through The Cracks.......2007-05-18

Although this movie was made in 2002, it is a great action movie!

4 out of 5 stars I HAVE THE WATCH!!!!!!.......2007-05-10

That scene where Bale inerrogates the female sense offender and his watch beeps to remind him of his next prozium dose...I have the blue faced version of it!! I got a lot of excellent comments from everyone who has seen it!! Awesome conversation piece! Oh yeah, the movie was cool, not the most original story line though. If Bale was to play in a "big brother" movie, he should have been roled as Neo in the matrix!!! That would have been 4 stars better that the "totally bogus" Reeves who has carried that stupid stoked surfer accent in all his movies.

Bean, Bean, maniacal nut / The more you watch, you bust a gut! First unleashed in 1989, this sketch series was embraced by PBS viewers in the United States. In the tradition of the great silent clowns, Rowan Atkinson created a character with universal and multi-generational appeal (the sketches have little dialogue and are driven by often ingenious physical comedy). Like Bart Simpson, the resourceful, mischievous, and sometimes malevolent Bean is the inner child incarnate who acts on the impulses polite society normally represses. Atkinson has described Bean as "a 9-year-old boy, with an apparent lack of worldly experience, but an ingenuity that is quite clever in dealing with problems presented to him." These problems include not knowing a single answer on an exam, tactfully disposing of a revolting restaurant meal, changing into his swimsuit at the beach without first removing his pants, and, most hilariously, getting a turkey stuck on his head (a classic bit reprised in the ill-conceived 1997 feature film).

Atkinson has enjoyed some mainstream success stateside. He was the nervous minister ("...your awfully wedded wife") in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the voice of Zazu in The Lion King. But he mainly enjoys cult status among British comedy aficionados as a founding member of Not the Nine O'Clock News and the star of the Black Adder series. Bean is his crowning creation. In addition to all 14 episodes, this generous boxed set contains previously unaired sketches, Comic Relief appearances, and a segment about Bean's creation, which serves as a nifty introduction for the uninitiated. It also contains a preview for the new Mr. Bean animated series. This seems redundant. As this collection hilariously demonstrates, Bean is already animated enough. --Donald Liebenson

    3 out of 5 stars Classic Bean.......2007-06-08

Atkinson is hilarious and amazing, a bit too risque in some sketches for children but overall very funny!

5 out of 5 stars Got to love the Bean.......2007-05-18

My child is finally old enough to enjoy the same things that make me laugh. Going through the various movies, books, music and plays that I think are mandatory to develop a well rounded sense of humor, Mr. Bean is right in there with the best. Besides, Mr. Bean is one of the rare places you can turn for creative humor with no fear of sexual jokes, swear words, or other questionable matter. It's safe to watch no matter who is in the room.

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-05-07

I've not yet viewed all the DVDs in the set, but totally enjoyed the ones I've seen. I bought the complete set in order to get "Mr Bean goes to church". I find it very eye opening, in a humorous way, and down to earth.

4 out of 5 stars Frank about Bean.......2007-05-07

    Childlike Bean hits the spot.

Rowan Atkinson is truly wonderful. No better physical comedian since Red Skelton.

    5 out of 5 stars Bean.......2007-04-11

Rowan Atkinson is hilarious as Mr. Bean. This is pretty safe humor for kids as well, so you can watch it with the whole family. You don't find quality humor on TV like this any more. Definitely worth the price even if you are just a mild Mr. Bean fan. I purchased a set for myself and one for my brother.

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh

    Description

This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.

5 out of 5 stars West Side Story.......2007-07-02

Adapted by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the long-running Broadway play, this triumphant production combines a brilliant score and jaw-dropping choreography with a heart-rending tale of doomed love. The leads work well together, with Wood particularly effective, but supporting players Russ Tamblyn (as Jet leader Riff), Chakiris and Rita Moreno (as Bernardo's sassy girlfriend Anita) virtually eclipse the stars with their intense moves and portrayals. This vibrant film is also elevated by an unsurpassed, evergreen Bernstein/Sondheim score. Winner of a staggering ten Oscars, including Best Picture.

    4 out of 5 stars The Movie's OK..........2007-05-11

"West Side Story" is an interesting film to analyze. It won Best Picture in 1961; it's #41 on The American Film Institute's Top 100; But look at the top 250 films according to the Internet Movie Database. It's nowhere to be found..."West Side Story" is not, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It's a good film, but it's overly long and none of the singers are particularly good (except Marni Nixon, who dubbed Natalie Wood's vocals), and it's also very cheesy. A modern update of Romeo & Juliet, a movie about rival gangs that sing and dance. It's almost campy.

The movie takes place in New York, where the rival gangs The Jets (whites) and The Sharks (Puerto Ricans) frequently fight for the right to certain turf. After a school dance, a Jet named Tony (Richard Beymer) falls for Maria (Wood), the Puerto Rican sister of Bernardo (George Chakiris) the leader of The Sharks. The film features such memorable tunes as "I Feel Pretty" and "Gee, Officer Krupke."

It's definitely well made, as the acting is fine, and the choreography is superb...But at 2 hours and 30 minutes, I was thinking (once it hit the 90-minute mark) "END ALREADY!" I guess I should clarify however that I'm not a very big fan of musicals and I guess if you are, you'll probably like "West Side Story" a lot more than I did. But I think this is one of the 10 or so films that appear on the A.F.I. list that I can honestly say don't deserve to be there.

For being one of the shows that's often thought of as an example of reality TV's origins, there's never been much reality in the overly long-lived series The Simple Life. This two-sided, single disc of the fourth (and last) season has even less to do with reality than any of its preceding installments. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are still acting their parts of simpleton celebrities thrust into the "real" lives of regular folk, but during the contractually obligated production of what had become an astonishingly popular show, the poor little rich girls were in the midst of a bitter feud. They hated each others' guts, weren't speaking, and thanks to the machinations of their individual publicity experts, the whole world knew it. Consequently, the two rarely share screen time together except for ample sequences of split-screening, which makes for an even more bizarre pairing for two dim-witted million-heiresses who remain famous for nothing more that, well, being famous. Season four consists of a variety of slices of suburban Los Angeles family life with the wife/mother role being taken over on alternate days by either Paris or Nicole. As usual, they sneer and make fun of the lower class that they visit--all the while showing absolutely no class of their own. Their feud is vaguely addressed in the first episode, with the other nine being fairly rote imitations of their earlier-season forays into the humdrum of screaming kids, grocery shopping, preparing food, bill-paying, and every other mundane things the girls have been coached into criticizing and laughing at by the show's producers. We're invited into some parts of the girls' "real" lives with glimpses into their homes amidst their psychological destruction of others'. But as with the prior seasons, the can't-look-away-from-the-train-wreck aspect is the thing that keeps our attention. They hate us and we hate them, so it's the very definition of symbiotic entertainment. Since they also hate each other there's an extra element of amusement; only don't think too hard lest the fine line between amusement and contempt disappears. Who knows if their feud was real or made up by the genius publicity machines behind their fame. One thing that's not made up and definitely not comical is the gruesome change in Nicole Richie's body as her issues with low body weight reveal itself over the course of the episodes. No matter how much Paris despised her, she should have taken her ex-friend to In-N-Out for a few late-night burger binges (without the purging). --Ted Fry

    Description

America's hottest celebutantes, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, are back, and this time, they're taking over the country one family at a time! With their heated rivalry in high gear, the girls compete fiercely to see who would make a better housewife. Each hilarious episode brings a new family, a new challenge, and a new excuse to party! Never mind the fact that there are diapers to change and houses to clean when there are tequila shots to down and strip clubs to hit! Reality television has never been this wild...Simply put, it's simply outrageous!

3 out of 5 stars Till death do us part, literally.......2007-05-08

This DVD gives a good laugh to all ages, young or old. But it has no meaning to it, really. This meaningless humour is what keeps people wanting more and more. No one will get enough of them :)

4 out of 5 stars Time-Killing Fluff that is rather enjoyable.......2007-05-08

I'll admit it. I have watched every season of "The Simple Life" since the show's premier on FOX several summers ago. I wasn't going to watch the show, but thanks to the no-mans-land of repeats I found myself watching the premier with my mother one evening, and the strangest thing happened: neither of could stop laughing! We watched the entire season cracking up and actually looking forward to the next mis-adventure. The following summer with the double-long "Road Trip" season the same thing happened. I don't know how or why but we found this wildly entertaining. Although by season three it was more of the same and things started to get stale.

While people critisize this season because the girls are rarely together, that is the part I liked the best. You were able to compare and contrast the girls two vastly different styles and wild-scheme. The Simple Life 4 is by no means appointment, or even "good" TV, but it is a very worthy waste of several hours one afternoon.

1 out of 5 stars just wait till next season........2007-05-05

the 4th season is a complete disappointment. but, wait till next season. when paris is sentanced to 45 days in jail, she turns to her lawyer and asks, 'is that a place that sells ale ??' then we get episodes of 45 days and nights in a california 'spa cupcake' with color tv, air conditioning, low-fat no added salt chicken diet, paris drinking her first cup of jail brewed 'buck', and nicole visiting. then again, the judge should have sent paris to the arizona maricopa county tent jail. the episodes of paris working different jobs on the 'chain-gang' would be much more entertaining, especially with nicole crusing by in a limo.

3 out of 5 stars Just not the same.......2007-03-08

First three seasons are just too funny! This season leaves something to be desired. Since Paris and Nicole are feuding during this timeframe, it's just not the same. Still a few laughs.

In every aspect, the extended-edition DVD of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring blows away the theatrical-version DVD. No one who cares at all about the film should ever need to watch the original version again. Well, maybe the impatient and the squeamish will still prefer the theatrical version, because the extended edition makes a long film 30 minutes longer and there's a bit more violence (though both versions are rated PG-13). But the changes--sometimes whole scenes, sometimes merely a few seconds--make for a richer film. There's more of the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkien, embodied in more songs and a longer opening focusing on Hobbiton. There's more character development, and more background into what is to come in the two subsequent films, such as Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship and Aragorn's burden of lineage. And some additions make more sense to the plot, or are merely worth seeing, such as the wood elves leaving Middle-earth or the view of Caras Galadhon (but sorry, there's still no Tom Bombadil). Extremely useful are the chapter menus that indicate which scenes are new or extended.

Of the four commentary tracks, the ones with the greatest general appeal are the one by Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and the one by 10 cast members, but the more technically oriented commentaries by the creative and production staff are also worth hearing. The bonus features (encompassing two complete DVDs) are far superior to the largely promotional materials included on the theatrical release, delving into such matters as script development, casting, and visual effects. The only drawback is that the film is now spread over two discs, with a somewhat abrupt break following the council at Rivendell, due to the storage capacity required for the longer running time, the added DTS ES 6.1 audio, and the commentary tracks. But that's a minor inconvenience. Whether in this four-disc set or in the collector's gift set (which adds Argonath bookends and a DVD of National Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), the extended-edition DVD is the Fellowship DVD to rule them all. --David Horiuchi

I only had the regular version of the Fellowship and the extended version of the Two Towers and Return of the King. I just recently picked up this extended version to complete the set and am very glad I did. If you are even a casual Tolkien fan, the extended versions of each film are the only way to go. The added scenes make the whole experience much richer.

An incredible adventure that captures the imaginations and makes you laugh and cry! You will enjoy all the characters and miss them when they are gone! And the special effects makes you believe it is all real! Peter Jackson did an amazing job! And the cast is perfect! A real gem of a movie! I think everyone should own it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best movie of all times!!!.......2007-05-31

This has to be the best movie of all times!!! I LOVE it! I will never grow tired of it...not even when I'm 99!!! I love all of the characters...but here are my favorite:

    1. Aragorn (Strider ... ranger from the North)
    2. Gandalf (love that old wizard!)
    3. Merry and Pippin (sort of like Pintel and Ragetti from Pirates... always together and always funny)
    4. Sam (good 'ol Sam)
    5. Gimili
    6. Arwen
    7. Fodo Baggins (hip hip, hooray!)

This is a great movie ... I really like the extended scenes. This is a five star movie. I hope Peter Jackson does:

the Hobbit or, There and Back Again, a Hobbit's tale

    1 out of 5 stars i didn't like it!!!.......2007-05-16

I rented this movie and it was so boring. My whole family hated it. I hated it. I wish the whole world hated it. It was about 4 elf dudes who went on a stupid quest to destroy a "ring of Power" (oh that's SO scary) and in the end they don't even destroy it, the movie just ends with them looking at a mountain. I know there are two more movies that explain what happens next, but it is moronic that i (or my family) should have to sit through two more 3 hour long movies just to find out what happens. Entertainment needs to be fast and digestible, not long and bloated like this. The length is what kills it. If the whole movie had been like 2 hours it would have been decent, but c'mon, 9 hours?!?! No way. I have a life and I can't spend it watching one movie. Now the acting. It was the worst acting perhaps in history. The accents were so obviously phony and all the actors were hammy and pretentious. This is a movie guys, not some event that requires extreme emoting. The F/X were unimpressive. The CGI is very obvious, and it is very obvious that the elf dudes are the same height as everyone else. Why do people like this movie? It was depressing! There was nothing to be learned from this foolishness, just a bunch of grown men swinging plastic swords around. What a waste of time and life this movie is.

3 out of 5 stars One of the best movies ever made but the dvd I got has a really strange aspect ratio... .......2007-05-15

Ok I would be giving this movie 5 stars but the copy I got has a really strange aspect ratio. Its like a 2.35:1 but inside a 1.85:1 ratio. It makes it look like there are three different elements: the movie in the center in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio but a lighter shade of black in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio then the darker normal black bars... Its really annoying and looks very unprofessional. Whats even stranger is that the extended version I have looks perfect. I like the theatrical version better but it has this strange aspect ratio. Does anyone know why?

20 years is a long time in the lifeline of movie plot-arc necessities. It's also a pretty big generational stretch in the lives of audience demographics, which may be part of the reason the producers of this remake of the 1986 cult horror classic felt the need to update the original spare mano-a-mano backbone into a girl-and-mano-a-mano. The Twilight Zone-ish setup is still a pretty neat idea: regular guy on a lonely highway picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a psychopathic killer with some very unsettling supernatural might. Fans of the original could hardly hope for a demon villain with such creepy charisma as Rutger Hauer. But Sean Bean makes a respectable replacement, with his understated stare and stewing rage that brings a new brand of hair-raising devilry to the role of hitcher John Ryder. The lone "good guy" originated by a boyish C. Thomas Howell has been upgraded to a lovesick couple. In a twisty touch, Jim (Zachary Knighton, sorta unknown) and Grace (Sophia Bush, of One Tree Hill fame) trade gender roles, with Jim turning wimpy and feminine and Grace becoming a shotgun-toting testoster-ette. The body count's a little higher and the gore factor increased by the power of 20 (years), but some of the original film's set pieces remain much the same-- body-snapping case in point being an 18-wheeler being put to use as a old-fashioned torture rack. While the original might have placed a bit more emphasis on the philosophical and existential elements of evil passing from soul to soul, it wasn't exactly an intellectual thrill ride. Likewise, 2007's The Hitcher is no art film, and it can't be faulted for choosing fright and might for audiences that are always looking for bigger and more elaborate splats for their horror entertainment buck. 4 out of 5 stars A Hundred Times Better Than The Original.......2007-06-28

I saw the original years ago.
I wasn't impressed with it then,
    sure Rutger Hauer was creepy,
but you could see him being crazy a thousand miles away, so it didn't catch you off-guard.
    Naturally,
when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
    This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;
It's superior to it in every way.
Once the movie starts,(and it wastes no time doing that),
it doesn't let up until the credits roll.
This is the flick the term "Thrill ride" was invented for.
Character development, plot, purpose, and the law of physics
are tossed to the wind, in exchange for good fun ride.
(Half the time I was like "No Way!" & "This guy is unstoppable")
He is an enigma alright, and he will hunt you down, regardless.

    Thrill after non-stop thrill,
will not only put you on the edge of you seat,
but will make you fall flat on your face,
so enjoy the ride to the carpet.

    MORAL OF THE STORY:
Keep your eyes on the road, and break for no one.

2 out of 5 stars Not a hitcher to pick up.......2007-06-26

once upon a time not so long ago, Hollywood execs gave the thumbs up to remake the classic mo vie Psycho. Since then, every classic horror movie has been fair game for new producers, directors and writers to have their way with. And thats where the pointless remake of The Hitcher comes in. As has been mentioned by countless other reviewers, Sean Bean in the place of Rutger Hauer is a noted loss, however the real issue with the remake is the changed storyline which is more of a blending of the original Hitcher and its direct to DVD sequel than anything new. The problem is that by making it a duo of good against a single evil, the tension is all but gone. The effects are very good, the chase is ok, but all in all even if you stop comparing the film to the original, the remake comes up one dimensionally flat. If you want a proper modern take on the premise of The Hitcher, see Highwaymen with Jim Caviezel. The story is compelling, the characters interesting and the whole thing comes off far better than even the few best elements of the Hitcher remake.

1 out of 5 stars How bad is it?.......2007-06-23

Pretty bad. The original was a great film. This one was so stupid. An example is when the two kids instead of explaining who the real killer is they decide to steal a cop car and drive off. The Born Again Christian family who gets knifed to death is an interesting add in. Not sure what the Hollywood director was trying to do there. All in all save your money.

    5 out of 5 stars Intense Thriller.......2007-06-23

This is one of the better thriller movies I have seen. The mix of suspense and violence is just right and will keep you watching until the end.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-06-19

THE HITCHER is actually a pretty good remake, and a pretty good thriller. I think we all know the premise: a young couple meets a hitchiker who ends up being a murderer. It's more than that though.. you get to care about the characeters, and you get to know them.
The two stand outs are clearly SEAN BEAN and SOPHIA BUSH. They both do a wonderful job. Sean Bean is just creepy as hell in this.. he will really scare the hell outta you. Sophia Bush shows that she can do more than One Tree Hill and teen drama's.. she is a good actress in this.
Have fun with the movie. Don't expect a masterpiece, but it certainly is good. Don't write it off because you don't like remakes.

When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there's hope yet for Hollywood's most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay's earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to question their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action extravaganza, albeit an impressively exciting one. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feast of CGI to dazzle the eye, The Island recycles much of the plot from 1979's Clonus while borrowing elements from Logan's Run, Gattaca and Minority Report, and while it's not as smartly conceived as those earlier films, there's no denying that, in many ways, it's Bay's best film to date. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Closer to reality than you might think.......2007-06-30

One of the great untold tragedies of the 20th century was the prevalence of medical testing on unwitting subjects. Some Americans have probably heard of the Tuskegee airmen, black American servicemen who became unwitting test subjects for medical experiments. But how many people are aware of the medical testing performed on ignorant prisoners, on poor people on various Caribbean islands, or the large-scale testing of vaccines on African villagers throughout the latter half of the 20th century. The latter tragedy was the background for the movie "The Constant Gardener" but it was kept in the background. This movie takes medical experimentation and puts it front and center in the middle of America.

The plot is simple; two clones discover that they were created to have their organs harvested. They then fight to escape, and then to help others like them escape. The story takes on the issues of cloning, genetic engineering, mind control, and even the power of corporations operating in the medical sphere. Yes the story has the requisite action scenes and love scene needed for any Hollywood flick, but it also has enough scenes to explore the medical and moral issues involved. We have Lincoln's real counterpart, a rich, spoiled yuppie who needs replacement organs because his are suffering from STD's he has picked up from various women. Then there is the scene when Scarlett Johansson's character sees the son of her real counterpart. And then there is the scene where Djimon Hounsou's character parallels the medical cloning with the atrocities he witnessed in his homeland in Africa. All in all, this was a great action movie with heart and a meaning. A great watch.

2 out of 5 stars An unoriginal adaptation of "Logan's Run" meets "The Fast & the Furious Furious"........2007-06-23

How disappointing & predictable. The entire premise is a poor "clone", pun intended, from a story about clones. "Logan's Run" is one of my ATF's. Michael York played Logan 5. In "The Island" Ewan McGregor character's name is Lincoln 6 Echo. In "Logan's Run", Jenny Agutter played Jessica 6. Scarlett Johannson's character is Jordan 2 Delta. Oh yeah, Richard "Jordan" was the antagonist in Logan's Run. Coincidence?

The premise of both stories is that an past cataclysmic atomic event requires everyone to live underground. Logan & Jessica are destined for "renewal". After "decontamination", Lincoln 6 Echo & Jordan 2 Delta were promised life on "The Island". In the finale, the destruction of the underground complex & subsequent exodus scenes are almost identical to "Logan's Run". Frankly, I do not recall so many car crashes in a Sci-fi thriller. They were obviously miniaturized. "The Island" is an embarrassing blotch on McGregor's & Johansson's otherwise stellar careers.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Effects and Music.......2007-06-14

I don't think there was anything really innovative about this movie. It has the same feel as Minority Report as far as the special effects and mixing technology into our modern urban landscape. Ewan and Scarlett give believable performances as naive individuals with the minds of 15 year olds. They movie is overall enjoyable and I think the score is beautiful.

    3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-06-08

Good special effects and interesting storyline. Unfortunately nothing that I'd recommend for anyone that is not a sci-fi aficionado.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a great movie.......2007-05-25

This movie has a really interesting concept of human clones being made so people can extent their life by replacing their aging body parts with cloned ones. The clones have memory imprinted in them so they are pretty stupid and just believe what they are told. But some of the clones got smart and began to question everything about their existence. Ultimately, two escaped from the facility that housed the clones. The company that makes the clones must stop them at all cost. This is where the movie falls apart with one car chase after another. At this point the whole movie turns from an intellectual and intriguing one to the a mindless action junk filled explosions and car chases. Unless you are a testosterone-filled teenager, there is not much to see in here.
