Italy's rubber-faced funnyman Roberto Benigni accomplishes the impossible in his World War II comedy Life Is Beautiful: he shapes a simultaneously hilarious and haunting comedy out of the tragedy of the Holocaust. An international sensation and the most successful foreign language film in U.S. history, the picture also earned director-cowriter-star Benigni Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor. He plays the Jewish country boy Guido, a madcap romantic in Mussolini's Italy who wins the heart of his sweetheart (Benigni's real-life sweetie, Nicoletta Braschi) and raises a darling son (the adorable Giorgio Cantarini) in the shadow of fascism. When the Nazis ship the men off to a concentration camp in the waning days of the war, Guido is determined to shelter his son from the evils around them and convinces him they're in an elaborate contest to win (of all things) a tank. Guido tirelessly maintains the ruse with comic ingenuity, even as the horrors escalate and the camp's population continues to dwindle--all the more impetus to keep his son safe, secure, and, most of all, hidden. Benigni walks a fine line mining comedy from tragedy and his efforts are pure fantasy--he accomplishes feats no man could realistically pull off--both of which have drawn fire from a few critics. Yet for all its wacky humor and inventive gags, Life Is Beautiful is a moving and poignant tale of one father's sacrifice to save not just his young son's life but his innocence in the face of one of the most evil acts ever perpetrated by the human race. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2007-06-14

No movie i have ever seen takes you on such an emotional ride as this film. From hilarity, to a romance comedy, to the horrors of a concentration camp and tragedy and finally a glorious sweet ending.

This movie is about 3 people and their love for each other in facist Italy. A man, wife and child. Unfortunately the father and son are abducted and taken to a concentration camp because they are jewish. Their mother who is not jewish insists that they take her on that train also. That's love, that's courage. From the beginning guido tries to convince his son that it is really a game. As someone who has a son close to that age i can imaging the gut wrenching pain of knowing your son is hungry, scared and miserable. Guido's lies help soften the suffering some. Nothing in this movie makes light of what went on there. His son escapes death only because he hates taking baths and is able to sneak back to their quarters. You see the hard labor, you see their numbers declining as more "don't make it". You see the cold heart of a nazi doctor who was a friend of guido years back but makes no effort to help him.

Any reviewer who claims this makes light of the holocaust didn't see the movie.

A beautiful film. One of the best in the decade of the 90s.

This is a movie that makes you devestated, but it makes you have a deep appreciation of life.

5 out of 5 stars La Vita é Bella.......2007-04-26

From the beginning of the film Italian director Robert Benigni's `Life is Beautiful' is easily identified as a masterpiece. A tale of fantasy and humor in the heart of Nazi occupied Italy, this film is centered around the fanciful story of Guido, the films central character. Guido, (Roberto Benigni) is a young Jewish librarian who lives in a world of his own fantasy. He is witty, imaginative, hilarious, a little crazy, and in a state of constant bliss. From his riddles to his endearments to his stories, Guido displays a childlike innocence that captures the heart of any person- and in the movie, captures the heart of Dora (Nicoletta Braschi) his "principessa" (princess) and wife.

The movie changes from a romantic comedy to a sarcastic tragedy as Guido and his son Giosué are taken to a concentration camp by the Nazi officials that occupy Italy at the time. However, despite this depressing turn of events, it is there in the horror of the camps that the magic of Benigni's story takes flight. In order to save his son's sanity, Guido invents a game for Giosué to believe/play while they are in the camp. From a complex point system, to mean candy-hogging guards, to a grand prize of a real tank, Guido lets his imagination soar as he fills Giosué's mind with stories and promises. This absurd paradigm shift is not only hilarious, but also provides a window into the depths of the human heart, which can endure all things when the light of hope is present. This part of the movie was also the most engaging, viewers will find themselves at the edge of their seats feeling as if they were also part of the game, and when Guido fumbles in his explanations you might unexpectedly hear a random helpful suggestion coming from your movie-buddy's lips.

Benigni's amazing ability to involve the audience in the plot of the movie was one of main reasons why La Vita é Bella won four academy awards in 1998. Moreover, Benigni also ties one more element into the story and the characters of Guido and Giosué- the music. Throughout their entire time in the concentration camp, the music of the movie remains happy and uplifting. Despite the hardships and cruel reality of life, the optimistic music represents the story Giosué believes. This is another great example of Benigni's gift to blend all aspects of cinematography- the characters, plot, scenery, music, and the reactions of the audience- in order to make the movie a complete and unique experience for the audience.

Because of its light representation, `Life is Beautiful' is a movie that can be seen by all audiences and I strongly recommend watching this film in its native Italian language with English subtitles. The experience, emotions, and representations do not carry the same meaning in American versions, and yes much does get lost in the translation. I also recommend watching this movie with a friend, it's a very moving film and it helps to have somebody's shoulder near you to cry on. I hope you enjoy this masterpiece just as much as I did and are able to pick out the many double-meanings in the dialogue to get the most out of your experience.

Laugh, cry, love, watch, enjoy, and help Guido help you find the beauty of life...

A Beautiful Mind manages to twist enough pathos out of John Nash's incredible life story to redeem an at-times goofy portrayal of schizophrenia. Russell Crowe tackles the role with characteristic fervor, playing the Nobel prize-winning mathematician from his days at Princeton, where he developed a groundbreaking economic theory, to his meteoric rise to the cover of Forbes magazine and an MIT professorship, and on through to his eventual dismissal due to schizophrenic delusions. Of course, it is the delusions that fascinate director Ron Howard and, predictably, go astray. Nash's other world, populated as it is by a maniacal Department of Defense agent (Ed Harris), an imagined college roommate who seems straight out of Dead Poets Society, and an orphaned girl, is so fluid and scriptlike as to make the viewer wonder if schizophrenia is really as slick as depicted. Crowe's physical intensity drags us along as he works admirably to carry the film on his considerable shoulders. No doubt the story of Nash's amazing will to recover his life without the aid of medication is a worthy one, his eventual triumph heartening. Unfortunately, Howard's flashy style is unable to convey much of it. --Fionn Meade

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful way to tell a tragically uplifting story..........2007-06-20

The real life story of John Nash plays out as engaging and interesting as some of our more well thought out fiction. Now, as some have already noted whether here or in media scrutiny, not all of this film follows Nash's life accurately. Some of this film is fictionalized, but isn't that for the most part what always happens. Just because it's a true story doesn't mean Hollywood doesn't feel the need to tamper. At least here the tampering does not by any means take away from the power within the film and the performances that dominate. Nash's life story is still portrayed effortlessly and beautifully, compelling and entertaining and full of just about every aspect of a priceless and award worthy film. `A Beautiful Mind' truly has it all.

Russell Crowe here delivers a breathtaking performance as John Nash, a brilliant math student who gets to the top only to tumble back down to the bottom at breakneck speed. Living a life that in the end appears mostly a lie, Nash eventually is diagnosed with schizophrenia. At this point in his life, married with a child and working a steady job, Nash and those around him are finding it difficult to differentiate reality from the creations of his mind. The movie then turns its focus on Nash's recovery and the effect his sickness has on those closest to him.

Crowe is truly the star here, swallowing whole this character driven study on the human spirit and determination to survive. He engulfs the screen and makes this mans plight come alive for the audience. What's commendable here is that Howard's directing and of course the script, adapted from Sylvia Nasar's biography, allow for the viewer to really connect with the entire cast, most importantly Nash himself. This proves effective because once Nash's life is shattered before our very eyes and he begins to crumble we are brought to a place deep within our emotions that would have been impossible to touch had we not come to know Nash before his world came tumbling down. We fall in love with this man and so we feel his pain, his wife's pain and are emotionally distressed alongside them both.

Alongside Crowe both Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany deliver astounding performances as Nash's longsuffering wife and imaginary best friend. Jennifer's Oscar winning performance is full of so much life, so much pain and emotional attachment that we can relate to and understand her feelings every step of the way. We watch her transform from this woman who knew how to control the things around her, including Nash, to a woman scared of what was going to happen next, a woman who felt detached from all she thought was real. Bettany's portrayal of Nash's college roommate is high spirited and refreshing. He serves as our brightest comic relief but also our biggest heartbreak as we watch Nash realize he never truly had his friendship at all.

Crowe, one of our finest actors, is a true chameleon and he engages himself so far into this role that he becomes John Nash, and watching that transformation is utterly rewarding. His determination and fervor are so invested in this performance from the moment he appears on screen that one is automatically drawn to him and connected to him entirely. From start to finish `A Beautiful Mind' proves itself worthy of our attention and consideration and is sure to astonish and amaze you. From its heartbreaking story to its brilliantly crafted direction to its powerhouse performances, `A Beautiful Mind' is a winner from the top of its head to the tip of its toes. The well rounded supporting cast including the likes of Ed Harris and Josh Lucas continue to astonish in their respective roles and aid in delivering one of the warmest and beautifully articulated Hollywood experiences. This, my friends, is what going to the movies is all about.

Russell Crowe did an incredible job of portraying the real-life story of Princeton Professor John Nash, a brilliant mathematician who won the 1994 Nobel Prize, despite his dysfunction due to schizophrenia. My heart went out to this amazing man for all he suffered; his perseverance tugged at my heart strings; and I was heartened by his wife standing beside him through thick and thin. I'm highly encouraged that Professor Nash managed to kick his dependence on the schizophrenia medicine and go on to reach some of his major goals in life.

Thanks to the brilliant directing of Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind is one of those bittersweet movies with a satisfying ending that left me feeling good about life and the human conditiion ... a lasting impression of "hope."

Russell Crowe and the entire cast are to be commended for their sensitive, caring performances in this fine drama.

I got it as a gift for someone's birthday. They loved it. Fabulous!

3 out of 5 stars A terrible example of 'excellence' in film........2007-02-09

The best part of the film were when the leading character was delusional. That's not a good basis for a film to grow off of, especially when sanity brings the viewer a happy boring ending. There was no real romance to speak of, instead the idea of exchanging bodily fluids and skipping any small talk prevailed. The director Ron Howard reaffirms that he does not know how to craft love stories.

I did not find the characters to be believable as portrayed. The acting by Russell Crowe was horrific. The phoniness of his stammering accent reminds me of having sticky fingers. You can't get rid of it and the longer it goes on the more annonying it gets. His wife lacked any character development. She is similar to an immovable pillar which remains in the same spot and the same shape less some aging. I can hear Crowe's character saying, "that's a good wife, now stand over there and cry when I get all the accolade."

The makeup showing the aging of characters appeared planned and formulated. It was great the first dozen movies we saw it but now it doesn't work. I found myself successfully guessing where the plastic pieces were applied to the faces. There wasn't much else to do as I was completely bored waiting for the credits to roll finally releasing me from this yawner.

I will give the movie 3 stars. It was average at best. The editing, soundtrack and portrayal by some supporing actors were the only things saving it from a lower score. Wait for it to appear on TV. This movie won 4 academy awards. It is a terrible example of 'excellence' in film.

5 out of 5 stars Got sleep? Excellent stressbuster, spiritual mediation and yoga .......2007-06-20

This is an excellent soothing and relaxing DVD. If you are a working and commuting individual, then you need sleep and rest. Medications are good, but Nature is the best medicine without any bad side effects or hangovers to experience afterwards. This DVD's natural sound of birds and ocean waves and cinematography is well balanced. You can hear the ocean waves and sea birds, while calm background music is playing. It has the new loop effect, so you can put it in your TV/DVD disk drive and at the end of the series, then the Pacific coast will continue to play until you decide to stop it. It takes your imagination (as if you were looking out of a picture window) and look into the face of nature. So save yourself some money and skip the Airport TSA lines, baggage checks, plane tickets and relax in your favorite armchair with a cold drink and watch Mother Nature put you to sleep in the safe environment of your home. Let the RICH keep their oil, along with its high prices. I await the future DVDs. Please add squirrels and sandpipers, as animals. Thank you for sharing your relaxation ministry with the world, at such a time as this.

This absolute winner, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey and adapted by him, is a kind of enchanted, urban slice-of-life tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who is in love with the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Hampering Jamie's progress on the romantic front is his fear that his mother (Linda Henry) will find out, as well as concern over complicating Ste's existing problems. Beautiful Thing is a relationship movie, to be sure, but that description doesn't really describe the buoyant tone of this British television production. Democratic in its inclusive regard for each character (whether camera-pretty or not), the film--well-directed by Hettie Macdonald--is full of surprises. Chief among them is the terrific personality of Jamie's mum, a strong and independent woman who truly worries over and adores her son. But this is a movie involved in a kind of happy dialogue with itself: the tunes of Mama Cass, for instance, play a part in both the story and overall ambience, while a strategic placement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" during an act of love is fun and exciting. --Tom Keogh

Description

A pair of teenage boys growing up in a working-class neighborhood become aware of their homosexuality. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses. Once they decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Winner of 4 International Film Festival Awards.

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful Thing, impossible to understand.......2007-05-29

This movie is very difficult to understand, is spoken in a British jargon which is impossible to follow. It does not have any subtitles or a better translation to an American Standard English. I recommend buying it only if you live in the UK and understand their jargon.

4 out of 5 stars snap.......2007-05-24

A good coming of age/romantic comedy. The Brit humor is always good for a laugh.Would watch this one again just to catch all the one liners.

5 out of 5 stars I never tire of seeing this movie. It IS a beautiful thing!.......2007-05-06

As a gay man, I have to say the plot of this film takes me back to a time when I first started to find myself and, eventually, came out. "Some things are just hard to say", says Jamie (one of the teenagers in the film), effectively coming out to his mother. I remember saying that or something not unlike it at the time.

Jamie and Ste live next door to each other, and when Ste's father and brother have physically abused him (an ongoing problem), Sandra (Jamie's mother) takes him in for the night, whereupon he and Jamie begin their self-discovery.

Perhaps my favourite scene is when Jamie and Ste are running through the woods together when they finally stop to begin a long, passionate kiss. It always brings tears to my eyes because I feel so happy for them, not to mention deliriously envious.

I think the gay theme of this film is mild enough as to not offend too many people if they are already open to viewing a film covering such a topic. However, some of the language is quite crude - the "C" word appears a number of times. I've read many American reviewers stating they have trouble with the accent so I suspect British TV and films are not widely shown there (perhaps there is little interest). Being Australian I fortunately have no trouble understanding both accent and colloquialisms.

I've seen plenty of gay films before. Most have not had that great a storyline or lasting feeling to them. Beautiful Thing has genuine effects on the emotions, especially if you can relate to the main characters. It is definitely my favourite film in this genre. I just love it!

5 out of 5 stars Do Something You Won't Regret.......2007-04-02

On the short list for the "world's toughest place to live" award, Southwest Africa's Namib Desert houses a wealth of intriguing creatures, featured in Jamie Uys's Animals are Beautiful People. As various beasts, bugs, fish, and fowl appear, a soft-spoken narrator pinpoints behaviors that mirror human ones, often inventing whimsical tales meant to inspire chuckles or sighs. A male wart hog, a "homely bachelor," lands a "wife" with a penchant for redecorating his burrow; austere maribou glower like disapproving undertakers; a billowy, nameless fish is called a dizzy blonde. Uys's respect for the harsh lifestyle these creatures endure clearly displays itself amid the comical sound effects and Fantasia-lite melodies that infuse the 90-minute show. The result: a richly informative, beautifully filmed lesson in the power of adaptation and the lush wildlife that inhabits the cradle of civilization. Six years after completing this project, Uys went on to create The Gods Must Be Crazy. (Ages 5 and older) --Liane Thomas

Description

From the creator of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Away in their own mysterious world, far from the prying eyes of people, Africa's animals lead lives of humor and horror, danger and dignity.

5 out of 5 stars a delight to watch.......2007-07-04

A wonderful movie! This is clearly not a biology documentary but, as some books and movies about animals do, it probably does more for nature preservation, than some scientifically accurate movies.

Watch this if you like reading Gerald Durrel's books about animals - the authors voice has the same quiet and kind humor as do Durrel's books.

Jamie Uys made a rare kind of a movie - he makes you like every single creature that you see. By the end of the movie you migth not know a whole lot about their behavioural or food habits (though there is some information of that kind too) but you will be in love with every single living thing there is. Before that movie I only knew two people who could do that - Durrel and Herriot. Durrel could spend a couple of hilarious pages describing a toad so at the end you will feel you admired and loved that toad as much as he did. Jamie Uys definitely shares that ability.

5 out of 5 stars Educational and comedic for everyone.......2007-05-16

This movie doesn't have any particular target audience with it's story. There are so many entertaining parts that it is definately a must have for anyone who likes a good laugh. We sometimes try to seperate ourselves for animals that we forget how much their behaviors are like ours. There are so many scenes in this movie that I was laughin out loud. Although even though I saw this movie several years ago I still remember several scenes. So I really do believe it does more than make you laugh, it educates you on how precious the circle of life is. If you have any remote interest in wild animals or just like to laugh this movie is for you.

5 out of 5 stars YES.......2007-05-04

I love the discovery channel as much as the next person. I find myself engrossed with animals around the world but if you're looking for a dry, fact only account of nature this isn't what you expected. The director of this documentary was also the director (and creator if I'm correct) of the movies "The Gods Must Be Crazy" I and II. If you've seen those movies then you'll understand the humor that underscores this entire show. This is a real documentary complete with amazing footage (breath taking in some parts) however it captures nature with a comic eye. It's old (I belive from the 70's) so don't expect IMAX images but it's absolutely amazing. Children will absolutely love this documentary (and possibly get them interested in more) and the child in you will love it too. As a 20 something I actually set my alarm for 2am to record it when it was playing on HBO a long time ago so you can see, I've gone to great lengths to veiw this amazingly humorous account of the harsh African landscape. If you watch animal documentaries, please get this movie, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A very fun documentary.......2007-04-02

I grew up watching this film over and over, and now my children love it as much as I did. My love for classical music definately began with this film when I was 6 years old. It is very funny and the dry sense of humor will entertain adults and children. Some of the facts may be a bit lost in the humor, but it definitely gives a great over all sense of the Okovango, the Namib and the Kalahari. Other than the Crocodile Hunter, this is the only animal documentary my kids will sit through from beginning to end repeatedly (by their own choice), so that's saying something!

5 out of 5 stars Still great beautiful people.......2007-04-02

Although this movie is very old, it still captures its audience and it can be compare with a lot of movies made recently. The humorous narrator did great and for something this old....it stay a classic!!! i can recommend it.

This town drama from Ted Demme centers on former classmates coming together for their 10-year reunion. Scott Rosenberg's (Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead) script thoughtfully passes over the usual grumblings of young adults who can't believe they still live in the same snowbound town. They accept--even welcome--their blue-collar jobs, whether plowing snow or cutting hair. Willie (Timothy Hutton), the lone wanderer, returns to his listless house in a state of flux, the piano-bar circuit wearing thin as is his relationship with Tracy, a well-off attorney (Annabeth Gish). He isn't the only one with problems. Tommy (Matt Dillon) occasionally sleeps with his now-married high school sweetheart Darian (Lauren Holly) while the earnest Sharon (Mira Sorvino) is left to wait. Paul (another thickheaded role for Michael Rapaport) refuses to commit to Jan (Martha Plimpton) until it's too late. Paul is enamored with the idea of the supermodel (the title's "beautiful girls") that, he believes, can make life perfect. It's a very satisfying comedy, with some forced poignancy (Willie's description of Tracy as a "seven and a half" comes off as a death sentence). Rosie O'Donnell's dissertation on why Playboy and Penthouse have ruined males' expectations is much like Meg Ryan's orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally...: it's hilarious, even memorable, never wholly believable.

The two wild cards thrown into Beautiful Girls give the film its kick. Uma Thurman enters as the local barkeep's (Pruitt Taylor Vince) radiant cousin. From the big city, she can flirt with the awestruck guys and still keep her head. Willie's real emotional tug is from Marty, the precocious 13-year-old neighbor. If you didn't see Natalie Portman's sophisticated work in the The Professional, her performance here will come as a revelation. You deeply believe that Willie and Marty are connected despite their age difference. Their courtship will never come to be, but the way the two talk (and talk some more) about their lives is the most insightful part of Rosenberg's script. Everyone's so comfortable in his or her roles that you may truly feel sad when the film ends. --Doug Thomas

Description

An all-star cast sparks this captivating comedy about a group of old friends whose 10-year high school reunion creates some hilariously unexpected surprises. Willie (Timothy Hutton -- FRENCH KISS), Tommy (Matt Dillon -- TO DIE FOR), and Paul (Michael Rapaport -- MIGHTY APHRODITE) may have lost a bit of their youth, but they're still ready to party with Uma Thurman (PULP FICTION), Rosie O'Donnell (TV's THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW), Lauren Holly (DUMB AND DUMBER), and Mira Sorvino (AT FIRST SIGHT) -- the "beautiful girls" who've turned their lives upside down! Also featuring a hot soundtrack, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is a must-see comic delight that's sure to entertain you!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A comical and insightful jaunt.......2007-04-15

Beautiful Girls is a very light-hearted comedy about a small town class reunion. It does hover dangerously close to some dark, abstract notions that frequently threaten the overall good vibes. That makes the movie entertaining and realistic. Luckily it teeters on the positive side and never falters at any point.
It's directed by Ted Demme(Blow)and it won a CEC award for Best Screenplay. Its completely filled with clever dialogue. At times it might seem a little glib, but it covers its tracks with responses from it's characters, like when one says "you stay awake nights thinking up this (stuff)".
Many of the characters do fall into stereotypes, but this is inconsequential because it doesn't feel forced. Everyone has their odd little quirks that make them unusual and interesting.
Matt Dillon is great in a typecast role as the kinda shady womanizer. Michael Rappaport is awesome as his annoying buddy. Timothy Hutton is the one guy who realizes he doesn't need a drastic change. And a young Natalie Portman steals the show as the "little neighborhood Lolita".
There are many scenes with buddies drinking, saying stupid stuff, drooling over beautiful girls. Almost all the guy's dreams seem somewhat quixotic.
I think this is one of the most underrated comedies ever. I always feel better after watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Willie C! Stay cool! Stay cool forever.......2007-04-11

One of the best and a collectible & worth watching the movie for just this part
"Supermodels are beautiful girls, Will. A beautiful girl can make you dizzy, like you've been drinking Jack and Coke all morning. Se can make you feel high with the single greatest commodity known to man--promise. Promise of a better day. Promise of a greater hope. Promise of a new tomorrow. This particular aura can be found in the gaze of a beautiful girl. In her smile, in her soul, how she makes every rotten little thing about life seem like it's going to be okay. The supermodels are bottled promise. A beautiful girl is all powerful, and that's as good as love"

3 out of 5 stars This movie is just ok...........2007-02-01

Frankly, I bought this DVD only because Natalie Portman is in it. The movie has this prevailing forced quality to it: Ms.Portman's performance is good, but seeems forced(=unconvincing as 13 year old) The same goes for Uma Thurman(watch the dancing scean with Paul). The jokes and dialogues are funny, yet not really fresh even thouth it's not recycled materials. I think this is the director Ted Demme's first ensemble cast movie, and it kinda shows.

5 out of 5 stars I beg to differ (a little).......2006-11-15

This is a fine film. The characters are older young adults, barely young enough to be able to characterize this as a "rite-of-passage" film. I disagree with those who suggest that the characters ultimately give up on the dreams of their youth and "settle" for an inevitable and dull adulthood. From my 58 year old vantage point, they are leaving their shallow and immature adolescence for the deeper and more meaningful commitments to mature, real (not mythologized) partners who love them for who they are. They are ready to embrace their lives both present and future and let go of the ever more distant and irrelevant past.
The Hutton character is certainly tempted by Thurman. Though he admires and cares for the 13 yr old Portman character, he is always aware that her desire for him will not be returned by him. He relates to her impatience to grow up, recognizes her puppylove feelings for him, but never considers abusing her affection for him.
This is a wonderful ensemble cast. Though more polished than its predecessor, this film reminds me of the early John Sayles film "Return Of The Secaucus Seven".

4 out of 5 stars Willie and Marty.......2006-10-08

This movie is about the growing relationship between a surprised, smitten Willie and beautiful girl Marty. It's all we care about. Everything else is window dressing to these two.

Opposites attract in this love story for the younger set. Carlos is a straight-laced poor boy working his way toward a better life. Nicole is a rich girl with a wild streak who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Can it be that they're meant for each other? Yes, of course it can. Crazy/Beautiful follows a familiar pattern--the two young lovers come from different worlds, and no one else understands them--but has a few intelligent wrinkles to the standard star-crossed plot. Nicole's dad, for example, actually likes Carlos and worries that Nicole will corrupt him. Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez give assured performances as the young lovers, and the movie's message of tolerance comes across without being preachy. As teen love stories go, you could do far worse. Adults may be left cold by Crazy/Beautiful, but teens--especially those with a dramatic streak--will enjoy this well-intentioned romance. --Ali Davis

Their innocent flirtations quickly develop into passionate love, but Nicole's self-destructive behavior threatens their relationship and puts Carlos' promising future in jeopardy. Will their intense passion keep them together despite the objections of their families, or will Carlos be forced to plan his future ... without Nicole? Surprises lie at every turn in this wildly seductive and critically acclaimed drama.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars NICOLE / CARLOS : A LOVE STORY.......2007-03-24

John Stockwell's CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL describes a conformist love story in an environment that doesn't react the way it should react. In a mainstream movie, the Mexican parents of Carlos Nuñez would have cherished Nicole Oatley with the usual Latin warmth and Nicole's family would have rejected Carlos because of his social and race background. Congressman Tom Oakley, even if he's a member of the Democrat party, wouldn't have accepted that his daughter sees the son of a chicano. Thanks to the unusual handling of this love story, in addition to the exceptional performance of Kirsten Dunst, CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL deserves to appear in your rental list.

A DVD zone Mamas and Papas.

4 out of 5 stars Wierd movie :).......2007-01-31

Its hard not to appreciate a teen film which actually manages to take itself seriously - and get away with it. The plot of the film may sound cliched: boy meets girl, girl a troubled story etc; but we gain enough insight into the character's lives to give them our sympathy.

The DVD version looks perfect and has an interesting commentary with the director and Kirsten Dunst, as well as the usual trailer and behind the scenes featurette.

5 out of 5 stars yin-yang.......2006-10-24

You know how some movies are such an intense experience that you feel changed in some way? And how you can't stop thinking about how powerful certain scenes were? Yeah. This is one of those.

The way Nicole and Carlos complete each other is incredible. At first, Nicole is lost and destructive. The solid schedule of homework, football practice, and family obligations deteriorates for Carlos as he becomes engulfed in Nicole's world of chaos and drama. But their love is something real, strong enough to make everything change. Carlos realizes that he has to make sacrifices in order to save Nicole from herself, and Nicole realizes that she's ready to become the person she's always wanted to be. Carlos helps her find the way home.

This is an awesome movie that shows us how beautiful true love is, and how crazy it would be to settle for anything less.

5 out of 5 stars "Our skin looks so beautiful together.".......2006-05-19

If 'Crazy/Beautiful' served no purpose other than a template for young talent consider it done, for all three young stars (Kirsten Dunst, Jay Hernandes & Tarryn Manning) all put there best feet forward in this critically acclaimed teen drama. The story, while it's been done before, has never quite been done this well. Nicole (Dunst in one of her BEST performances to date) is a rich girl with a wild side who continues to stress her father and push her stepmother further away. Carlos (Hernandes in his breakout role) on the other hand is a poor boy trying hard to make the best of himself, traveling further than need be, waking up earlier than need be, all to get a better education and get a chance to be something bigger than he is. When they meet it's lust at first sight, but as they grow together they realize how much they need each other. This is a touching family film that shows well how a childs feeling of neglect and unwantedness can damage there relationships and even result in their inability for better relationships in the future. Kirsten Dunst is truly a star and she shines so much in this film delivering what has to be her most stunning and commanding performance to date. This is far from just your typical teen film but it explores real issues with taste and tact and proves itself to be a very very good movie.

An excellent overview of the struggles and tortuous life of a schizophrenic. It brings to the attention of the public the pain and suffering both of the person who is mentally ill, and the caregiver. The movie is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Powerful.......2007-05-08

This film was just flat out enticing. I have watched it over and over again, and it never seems to lose its value. Crowe is a great actor, and pulls off his role with perfection. This is one of my most favorite movies ever, and is one of the very few that ever made me tear up. Some may find the beginning to be a little slow, but after about twenty minutes of watching, you'll be hooked. Don't miss this one!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wow wonderful movie do not let anyone give it away to you.......2006-10-17

I saw this movie when I was working at a mental hospital. I helped me to understand what schizophrenia might be like to some people. If you want to know about that watch this and do not learn to much about the movie it will reck it. Just know that this is very well done and respectfully done. It is based on a true story, but not a documentary. The acting is excellent. If you want to understand more watch this. It is a beautiful movie.

My Beautiful Laundrette, Stephen Frears's low-budget realization of Hanif Kureishi's subversively critical play, captures the contradictions of mid-'80s Thatcherism in a way that's as fresh today as when it was new. Wheeler-dealer Nasser (Saeed Jaffrey) sums it up when he says, "In this damn country, which we hate and love, you can get anything you want." He sets up his nephew Omar (Gordon Warnecke) with a rundown laundrette and the instruction to make it a success, which Omar temporarily does, with the help of his childhood friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). When the film was first released, it was the gay content that dominated the conversation, whereas now it seems a sensitive and multifaceted summation of its decade, exploring social, ethnic, and sexual issues and contradictions. Bringing together two such different characters as Omar--Asian, ambitious, for whom success is defined by wealth--and former childhood friend Johnny--white trash, ex-National Front--was inspired. Watching their friendship develop into love, and the ensuing bitterness and misunderstanding that they suffer from friends and family, is very poignant. All the lead roles are well taken, the contradictory character of Nasser in particular. By turns, funny, touching and anger-inducing, My Beautiful Laundrette wears its age lightly and its era proudly. --Harriet Smith

Description

With its "extraordinary cast" (Los Angeles Times)including OscarÂ(r) winner* Daniel Day Lewisand "riveting visual style" (Newsweek), this "warm, compassionate and feisty" film (The Hollywood Reporter) about a young Pakistani man coming of age in London is "a fascinating, eccentric [and] very personal movie" (The New York Times)! Living on the dole with his alcoholic father in a shabby South London flat, Omar is a bright-eyed Pakistani teenager who wants to make something of himself. And as his papa drowns deeper in vodka and self-pity, Omar turns to his unscrupulous wheeling-and-dealing Uncle Nasser to show him the key to success. But when Nasser hires Omar as manager of a seedy, dilapidated laundromat, Omar is forced to choose between running a squeaky-clean establishmentor conducting some very dirty business! *1989: Actor,My Left Foot

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2007-05-28

I love Daniel Day Lewis and adore almost everything he does so I thought I would check it out. I can't believe people are giving this movie such high ratings. The acting is horrible, the plot is incomprehensible. I don't have any sympathy for Omar and despise almost every man in the movie for their cocky, arrogant, chauvenistic attitude. I tend to like independent, artistic movies but this movie is ridiculous. Please do not buy this movie. Rent it if you're curious.

"MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE"

Politics Aside...

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"My Beautiful Launderette" tells the story of Omar, a young guy who is taking care of his alcoholic father during that period in history when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. People longed for financial success back then (the 80s), especially Asians (like Omar) who were living in England. Asians began their influx to England in the late 6os and 70s and they searched for their identity in a country that was their home but never really allowed them to feel at home.
Omar wanted both financial success and he wanted an identity and he worked at both. While he strove he runs into an old friend from school, Johnny, who had fallen under the influence of a group of Neo-Nazis. Omar brings him into the family business and the chemistry between the two soon accelerates. His gay relationship between the two is underplayed as if it were the most normal thing in the world (as it should be). Any tension in the film is not sexually related but political and socio-economic. The charm and the wit of the film mesmerize the viewer. Daniel Day-Lewis is just amazing as Johnny, he is an actor's actor.
The film undertakes the difficult task of presenting important social issues without sacrificing entertainment and embraces a new kind of movie realism. Watching the two friends trying to make a go of a rundown launderette (a metaphoric look at the economy of Britain) sheds light on the state of downtrodden immigrants. The joining together of two opposing cultures, a Pakistani and a white "punk" also says tons about the British treatment of Asians. Ethnic problems create havoc for the two young men and racial tension is one of the major themes of the film. Even though the issues that are presented are major problems, they are handled with humorous wit and the film is quite funny and very serious at the same time. As an unconventional love story, it succeeds and as a political and economic statement it soars. "Launderette" is also very sensual without showing any actual sex and never exploits the gay subplot.
As I said before, Daniel Day-Lewis is sensational but it is Gordon Warnecke that owns this movie completely. Just watching his character change shows his brilliance at dealing with the complexities of life.
The ending of the film is quite ambiguous allowing the viewer to contemplate all that he has seen and its power rests on showing a great deal without really trying to moralize.
From what I have read about what was going on in London both economically and socially, the movie brilliantly depicts the situation. As it shows the feudal divide between the rich and the poor, it somewhat reminded me of the way things were once were (remember Dickens). We would have thought that modernism would have helped cure societal ills but according to the film things actually became worse. What we have with "Launderette" is a work of magic realism, in a portrait of London of the 80s replete with all of its ills.
Because the gay aspect of the film is not emphasized, the movie left me with several questions to consider. What was the nature of the boys' relationship when they were younger? What happened to that relationship? What really brought the boys together and what factors contribute to Johnny's acceptance of Omar and their final love and devotion to each other?
Questions like these and others are what make this film so interesting and it deserves at least one viewing if not more. I love movies that leave you thinking and this is exactly what "My Beautiful Launderette" does.

Top-notch performances.
If you liked " Brokeback Mountain", you will probably
like this one too, allthough the ambiances and are quite
different.
Enjoyable, witty, with fine characterizations.
DVD transfer OK.
As a non-english speaking,I especially appreciate the
sub-titling in english.
Don't miss it !

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Day Lewis Gets Discovered.......2006-01-11

Before My Beautiful Launderette, Daniel Day Lewis was a nobody. Afterwards, he was a force to contend with (four years later he would be an Oscar winner).

Omar (Saeed Jaffrey) is an unemployed guy who lives with his dad in a council flat in Lambeth. But he wants to be more like his wealthy Uncle Nasar. Uncle gives him a start by offering him a job to manage a Laundromat. But this Laundromat is a dump and there is a string attached, Omar must date his cousin.

To make some extra money, Omar delivers drugs for another cousin. Omar decides to spruce the Laundromat up and enlists his friend Johnny (DDL). Johnny comes up with an idea of skimming some of the drugs to fund the upgrades. They reopen the luxury Laundromat and it is a hit.

The problem with dating his cousin is that Omar is in love with someone else, Johnny. This is deftly handled and it hits you from the blindside.

This film is great from many different directions. It shows insight into the Pakistani culture and the poor of London in the early 80's.

This is a great performance by Daniel Day Lewis and everyone should see it!
