The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze (1963) has some distinction among the few features made by Moe and Larry with Joe DeRita. Basically a retelling of the Jules Verne classic, the plot has the added twist of Phineas Fogg III having to emulate the experience of his ancestor but without paying a penny in doing so. Again there is a bank robbery that is blamed on Fogg, but this time the culprits actively attempt to stop his progress since the perpetuator is the very villain who made the bet to begin with.

A personable Jay Sheffield plays the circumnavigator straight and love interest Joan Freeman does what acting she can, given a stereotyped role. What is interesting is that the Stooges, at least in their opening scenes, try to play English servants, accents and all, but they fall into more familiar patterns as the film progresses. While in India, the three get to reprise the vaudeville routine of the nearly blind Maja who goes "Aha?" (done better by Curly in "Three Little Pirates"). While in San Francisco, they reprise the fight sequence of "Punch Drunks" (again surpassed by Curly in the second Stooges short way back in 1934) in which Curly Joe can win only when driven berserk by the sound of "Pop Goes the Weasel" as played by Larry.

In lieu of the expected chase at the end, there is the wild attempt to get to the club just before midnight to win all the side bets Fogg had placed on his 80-days deadline. Their arrival through a solid wall is a fitting ending to a film that just might induce youngsters to read the original book. A very respectable Three Stooges effort. --Frank Behrens

3 out of 5 stars Late career respectable effort.......2007-06-25

There haven't been many completely successful (in the artistic sense) feature length slapstick or broad comedies starring legendary comics such as the Three Stooges, and here's another one which should have been much funnier - opportunities fall by the wayside as the director, writer, and editor seem to forget what makes this kind of humor work - it's got to move fast, there's got to be quotable funny lines, etc.
In all fairness, you could count on two hands the collective feature-length *classics* by Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, and others. Jerry Lewis has two classics ("The Errand Boy" and "The Nutty Professor") but the point is that 80-90 minutes is too long for this genre.
This film is definitely one of their best, however; the story, based upon Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days, and, in a way, foreshadowing "Smokey And The Bandit" - don't look at me like that! - has a nice flow, and the supporting actors are fine. Joan Freeman is an exotic beauty who also did a good job on Elvis Presley's "Roustabout", not long after this entry.
But if you're looking at this movie critically (by the way, it runs too long and should have been shot in color) then perhaps you're in the wrong spirit: it was wonderful that older comedians were finally making a few bucks and getting some long overdue attention. And more significantly, their timing and ad-lib talent was intact.

4 out of 5 stars This has got to be their second best.......2007-04-05

If I had to line up the films from good to worst, I would have to start with Snoe White meets The Tree Stooges, then The Three Stogees Around The world in a Daze, thenThe Three Stooges meet Hercules.
The Three Stooges in Orbit and Stop Look and Laugh do not even rate a true mentioning. Any othere that may exist, I do not believe I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars If only Jules Verne could see this!.......2007-03-25

Believe me I enjoyed the Three Stooges films of the early 60's and this is one of the best! An hour and a half of good slapstick with a tale from one of the classics of all time. I laughed out loud at the misadventures of our boys. Go buy this you numbskul!

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE AMONG THE BOYS' FEATURE FILMS. . ........2006-08-21

THE THREE STOOGES GO AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE is my favorite among the boys' few forays into feature films. In their latter years, with Joe De Rita as Curly Joe, they were enjoying a resurgence of popularity due to their two-reelers being shown on TV. They were mainly doing live shows to enthusiastic crowds, but thank goodness they did find time and enough backing from Columbia to make a few more films. This one has always been my favorite because Norman Maurer and Elwood Ulmer were able to construct a really good story, using the Jules Verne classic as a springboard. The comedy, as expected, is excellent, incorporating some new bits and some classic Stooge routines which were nicely refit for Joe De Rita's personality, but what surprises is how well the story flows over the entire feature! Their features are all funny to varying degrees, but this, as one critic has put it, is a Three Stooges movie that even non-Stooges fans can enjoy! My favorite bit is the "Maha-Aha" routine, which originated in different form with Curly Howard, but Joe takes this one, which is a natural for this film, and runs with it. He's great!

Jay Sheffield and Joan Freeman are just fine as Phileas Fogg III and Amelia Carter, Peter Forster is a nifty villain in Vickers Cavendish, the always welcome Walter Burke (what a great face!) plays Cavendish's henchman Filch, the wonderful Maurice Dallimore plays Inspector Crotchet of Scotland Yard, and they all have a great time.

The film is in widescreen, a bit grainy, but looks good. The sound is fairly crisp. No extras, and under the "Trailers" section are trailers for three modern Columbia comedies, not other Stooges films or shorts.

I guess my only real complaint is that this DVD is a bit pricey. Otherwise, it's still my fave among the features.

5 out of 5 stars My all-time-favorite Stooge movie.......2006-01-01

This is by far, my all-time-favorite Three Stooges movie. A definate "must own!"
Their parody of the famous 'around the world in 80 days' is perfectly sprinkled with the antics we've always loved -from the great classic one-liners right on down to the usual slap-stick antics.
I've worn 2 VHS tapes out, and will be giving the DVD a run for its' money :)
The one bundled with it is not a bad choice, either. But then, I'm a bit biased since I've loved the 'stooges since I was a kid :)
