Not to be confused with the 1990 comedy flop featuring Uma Thurman, this Where the Heart Is boasts a winning performance from Natalie Portman. Novalee Nation (Portman), a pregnant teenager from Tennessee, is bound for California with her worthless boyfriend, Willy Jack (Dylan Bruno). A pit stop at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart proves fateful when Willy Jack abandons her there. She secretly sets up camp at the megastore and spends her days meeting with kindly booster Sister Husband (Stockard Channing) and eccentric librarian Forney Hall (James Frain). Her life takes another turn after she gives birth in the store (clean up, aisle six!) and finds a best friend in sassy nurse Lexie Coop (Ashley Judd). Meanwhile, Willy Jack has found a talent agent (Joan Cusack) and tries to make some life changes of his own.

Where The Heart Is offers charming, folksy fun; homespun wisdom; and an obstacle course of plot development (if the Wal-Mart angle weren't enough, there's also a kidnapping, a tornado, and at least half a dozen other major events thrown in). Director Matt Williams, who produced the popular sitcoms Roseanne and Home Improvement, takes television's cut-to-commercial route to make giant leaps in space and time from scene to scene. It's disorienting, but the remarkable female cast (which includes Sally Field in a cameo) lends plausiblilty to the muddle, even when you don't think anything more could possibly happen. --Shannon Gee
Description
Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman shine in this offbeat, delicious slice of life about a down-on-her-luck Southern teen. After gaining 15 minutes of fame for giving birth to "The Wal-Mart Baby", Novalee Nation (Portman) begins to put her life together with the help of the kind, quirky strangers who become her surrogate family. It's an inspiring celebration of love, friendship and self-worth that delivers "quality, emotionally satisfying entertainment" (ReelViews).

I really like this movie, it is a movie about overcoming whatever horrible things life throws at you. Natalie Portman does a great job as a pregnant teen with a loser boyfriend. After been left in a strange town she meets people who will forever change her life for the better.

Jade Rioux Book review 3/25/07

"Where the heart is", is a book about a girl named novalle, who finds herself in a difficult but common situation. She has to deal with many battles and struggles all because of one man. When everything is going right and all is good something always seems to go wrong. Until one day when novalle meets a women "sister husband" who supports and comforts novalle through this difficult era in her life. From then on novalles life was never the same.
Novalle goes through some terrible times. But there's always that one person who is uplifting and trustworthy to her, named Forney. As novalle goes through tough times he is always there getting her through them. Novalle gets so caught up in her own issues that she fails to give credit or reconciliation to him. Forney is constantly making an effort to impress novalle, but novalle just doesn't seem to get what he is trying to do.
I would recommend this book to everyone. This book was amazing and has such a strong true story line. "Where the heart is" will show you a girl who is in need for much help and reaches out for someone to be loved by. The story was so real to me and I think that when you read it, it is easy to put yourself in Novalles shoes, which helps you understand her situation more in depth. It will show you its ok to ask for help and someone will always be there to love you no matter where you are.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie.......2007-03-12

This is a real keeper! It's quirky but sentimental. A great job was done adapting from the book to the screen. Natalie Portman & Ashley Judd are terrific in it. Have watched it a number of times (borrowed from library) and finally purchased a copy for my very own.

5 out of 5 stars I Love this Movie!!!.......2007-03-10

This is a nice story with a lot of angles.

I was watching tv late one night and saw Sally Field as I
was flipping through the channels. Her range playing mothers is incredible. In the early 80s, she played the rugged individualist widow in the very excellent "Places in the Heart." She also played the assertive and supportive mother in "Forrest Guamp." In this movie, she showed she has a spectrum of roles. It was a nice contrast.

There isa sort of Cinderella aspect to this movie also that puts it in the same class as "Fried Green Tomatoes."

3 out of 5 stars Does Father Know Best After All?.......2006-09-07

The beginning of this flick reminded me of the play "Lost In Yonkers" with the exception that these young people were all from an upper class (status wise) family and had exceptional, individualistic talents. Christopher Plummer, long a favorite of mine, was just plain silly as the old magician. But we won't dwell on that. If you find that something you thought you really, really wanted no longer seems to desirable, this is the day to admit that to yourself and let the old dream go. That was the whole premise of this story.

Many people paint illusions and live in unreality, but these beatnicks of rare abilities are strange being, lost souls. The father who knows best is a master at demolition of old buildings and finds one where he transplants his weirdly-talented offspring to fend for themselves. The sisters made risque films and accumulated tenants who lived there in the tenement free if they participated in the montage for a calender, one you would never believe or expect from such a high-class background as these two girls. The young man is a computer whiz who develops his own games online and helps out with the charade when needed.

On the dance floor, "I've forgotten the steps.' "Your head has, but your heart hasn't." We never forget the music we loved or which helped us to grow up alone or with a large family; music is what soothes the soul when it needs balm. Who stopped the music, one asked; the father declared, "I did." And he paid for it bigtime. Stewart (Dabney Coleman) had a breakdown of sorts and learned to speak in 'tongues.' And so he and his wealthy wife fit right in with the rest of this weird group. None were ordinary. They learned a new level of confidence there in their artsy atmosphere. It was all a surrealistic fantasy and the gold eye makeup on the lotus flower was extravagant.

It sometimes takes failure to appreciate your success. Watching Stewart bid farewell to his office staff was worth the whole film. The grown-up kids were what really made the movie, however. What's the point of life -- it's just a rehearsal. They learned that life really is just an adaptation, all a game to be played out. The eerie house had fulfilled the need and so it too hit the dust. If you have not seen this one, it will keep you wondering how they got away with some of it past the censors and the rest will keep you in stitches. Coleman was the original Steve Martin.

2 out of 5 stars WHERE THE HEART IS.......2006-02-23

Disappointing- as a Boorman admirer I had expected to enjoy it, but found it flat and stagey. The dated, hammy acting style seemed intentional but the intention was obscure. The arty visuals however were marvellous

1 out of 5 stars I hope you appreciate the things I do for you, David Hewlett.......2004-12-15

The blurb on the back of this DVD made it sound kind of appealing: rich dad kicks his spoiled-rotten kids out of the house and into a "historic building" in order to force them to become adults. Unfortunately, the film turned out to be nearly unwatchable; pretty much every performance is over the top, the situations are more absurd than comedic, and it's difficult to actually care about any of the characters, they're so irritating. Though our fledgling grown-ups constantly fret about money, they don't actually seem to have any problems finding it, considering that they're able to paint their house, buy food, and do pretty much all of the things that you really don't do when you're living in poverty. And unfortunately there's not enough depth to any of these characters to make you believe them as real people, much less care what happens to them.

The only people who stand out in this film -- and by "stand out" I mean that they delivered performances which were not 100% overblown 100% of the time -- were David Hewlett and Crispin Glover. I've seen both do tremendous work elsewhere, but unfortunately with this script and this cast, neither is able to really shine.

4 out of 5 stars where the heart is dvd.......2003-06-09

Just to let anyone know, this dvd is a widescreen edition. Which (to me) is the most important feature. If you were hoping for any bonus features, there are none (not even the trailer). The movie itself, and the fact that it is in widescreen, should be enough reason to purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars Where the art is.......2002-01-14

Where the heart is was an unexpected surprise when I saw it back in 1990 and it continues to catch my breath and stir my heart every time I see it. More than a story of poor little rich and spoiled kids or parents that just don't get their kids, this is a visually beautiful and fluid portrait of vastly different people. Some start out as family members and some join the family. Product Description

Where The Heart Is
Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman shine in this offbeat, delicious slice of life about a down-on-her-luck Southern teen.

Anywhere But Here
Adele is flashy, flirtatious dreamer. Her daughter Ann is a quiet, no-nonsense realist. On the surface, they're like oil and water, but deep down there are two of a kind. "Susan Sarandon is show-stopping" (The New York Times) and "Natalie Portman soars" (NY-1) in this funny and touching story about a mother who knows best and a daughter who knows better!

Garden State
Writer/Director Zach Braff delivers an Oscar®-worthy performance (CBS-TV Chicago) opposite a wacky and endearing (Newsweek) Natalie Portman in this quirky, coming-of-age comedy. Twentysomething, emotionally detached Andrew Large Largeman (Braff) hasn t been home to New Jersey in nine years. Now, as Large attempts to re-connect with a variety of odd acquaintances including his father he decides to risk getting high on the most potent and unpredictable drug there is life! Co-starring Peter Sarsgaard, Ian Holm and Method Man, Garden State is marvelous fun (Rolling Stone).

5 out of 5 stars Its just awsome........2007-03-30

This compilation is just great. Anywhere but here is my favorite of the 3, and it has one of the best Natalie Portman performances ever.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie Portman Fantasy!.......2006-11-17

Natalie Portman is a famous actress from the Star Wars movies.

IF you like Natalie Portman then you should check out this DVD, My Virtual Cytherea. Hint: Cytherea has appeared on the Howard Stern Show and she is Natalie Portman's evil twin.

5 out of 5 stars Mommy's Little Girl, Jersey Girl, Walmart Baby !.......2006-08-15

I love Natalie Portman she is so wonderful to watch, beauty and talent all the way. Garden State is such a gem by far the best picture in this collector's set. The other two films are very low-key chic flicks that I find to be very charming thankfully for its leading lady and its cast of characters.

5 out of 5 stars 3 GREAT MOVIES FROM A VERY HOT ACTRESS!!!.......2006-07-19

4 out of 5 stars decent collection.......2003-11-20

I don't actually own the box set, but i know enough about the movies. Combined, they do make a semi good set, but i imagine it would be hard to find someone who doesn't own a single one of these movies already, so i kinda find the box set useless unless theres more to it then they reveal.

'The Banger Sisters' 2 out of 5 stars - I saw it, it was okay, but i don't really want to see it again so i wouldn't buy it. It is one of the 2 movies in this set that i DON'T own, and it would stop me from buying this set. I think A Walk In The Clouds would have been a much better 6th disc.

'Ever After' 5/5 - I love this movie, it's sweet, romantic and takes a good take on a classic. It's great acting, it sticks to Cinderella in many ways, but makes it more interesting then most versions. (including the Disney animated version which i also love)

'Moulin Rouge' 5/5 - My second fav movie of all time. It's great, it's unique in many many ways, and it's just all around brillant. The only problem here is that the box set says it's 6 disc, so i'm asuming that it is not the special edition of Moulin Rouge, which if you are a fan of the movie is worth the extra money.

'Say Anything' 5/5 - Classic love story, possibly one of the best romantic comedy high school flick ever. And the DVD is jammed pack full of enough extras that it almost makes up for the single disk version of Moulin Rouge for most people (not including me)

'Someone Like You' 5/5 - This one is pretty good, it's cute, it's funny, and the way it's told is great. Ashley Judd is brillant in it, and Hugh Jackman is so cute. And the ending is way better then the ending to the book (Animal Husbandry by Laura Zigman) tho the book is really good.

'Where The Heart is' 4/5 - I don't have this one DVD yet, but it is on my list, and i do own the VHS tape. It's cute, a lil slow at parts tho. (Just a update, i do own it on DVD now)

Anyhow, if i didn't own 4 out of the 6 already, with #5 on my list to buy, i still wouldn't buy this based on the above stated about The Banger Sisters and Moulin Rouge. But it is a fairly well put together box set that would be a good present or a gift to ones self.

The exploration and expressions of love and the true treasures of life are richly set in the artwork that flows across the screen and unites the story. A real treat for both the eye and the mind, it will delight the heart, wherever it is.
