Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Jude Law's Alfie, much like Michael Caine's Alfie in the 1966 original, is what you'd call an unrepentant womanizer. He beds 'em but never weds 'em, and New York provides ample opportunity to continue the process--until reality slaps him in the face. Because Jude Law is, well, Jude Law, you can see why he gets away with it as long as he does, and the actor also pulls off the usually awkward trick of narrating directly to the camera. Neither his Alfie, however, nor director Charles Shyer's remake emerges completely without scratches. Law has a Chesire Cat carnality, but he emanates too much intellect to buy him as the relatively dim bulb he's supposed to be. The film, meanwhile, is a bit soft around the edges; the whole thing would have more resonance if it wasn't quite so intent on watching the unrepentant repent. Regardless, it's a surprisingly thoughtful diversion, and there's fine work from Marisa Tomei, Nia Long, and Susan Sarandon as the women who understandably make Alfie reconsider his ways.--Steve Wiecking
Description
In this remake of the 1966 classic, Jude Law stars as Alfie, the quintessential Don Juan who is rather caught up in himself. Using his charm and a great smile, Alfie searches for beautiful women who will give him what he wants. Once they become too attached, he breaks their heart. This ideal bachelor lifestyle ends up unraveling and Alfie must learn to admit defeat and change his ways.

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

Customer Reviews:
My most favorite movie.......2007-05-13
I love this musical, it is probably my most favorite of all time. I love the way it was filmed and all the characters.
Fantastic!.......2007-03-25
Fantastic musical. Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevya, and his family, coming to grips with changes in a small village Tzarist Russia. Changes to the vaunted Tradition first come small, in the form of his daughters wanting to pick their own spouses. It gets worse as the village confronts anti-semitism.
The music is classic - hard to imagine anyone not knowing at least half the score already. Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, L'haim to name a few... And Topol... It is safe to say he was born to play Tevya.
The irony is dark, and much is shown, but not told. Is the breaking of tradition good or bad? Where do traditions come from? Is moving on ultimately a bad or good thing?
DVD add-ins include extensive commentary from the director, Norman Jewison, who adds light and historical context to the story and it's making. Well worth catching those as well.
Sounds is a joke.......2007-03-24
Love this movie but this "special" edition is NOT. The sound a remastered 5.1 is actually 2.0 returned the product once and received more of the same. Buy it for sentimental values only

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Those words from the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is a pixilated romp and very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amidst all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. --Robert Horton

Cornball alacarte.......2007-05-23
Fair to good comedy, but a long way from great comedy. Is it worth the buy ? maybe if your ready for some tall CORN, but definitely not a collectors edition. Buy it once, view it once but it will probably b a longtime before you would view it again, if ever ?
Not all Romans are as stuffy as Cicero.......2007-05-13
I grew interested in Roman history some years ago. A classical scholar friend introduced this movie to me. He said the movie is based on a form of Roman play called the farce. I laughed so hard that I almost failed to keep the dinner down. Jon Pertwee, who played Dr. Who, has a cameo appearance. I especially loved some of the music which just build on the mirth instead of interrupting it. If you think Roman history is all about bloody gladiators and stuffy speeches, watch this movie!
A delicious romp through Rome........2007-05-13
After seeing a local community theater production of this work, my daughter and I decided we had to see what Zero Mostel did with it. We were thoroughly entranced with this. It is funny and has some wonderful songs - Comedy Tonight and Everybody ought to have a maid are two great examples. It is just delightful. We recommend it to all.
Pure Musical Hilarity.......2007-04-22
This movie is by far one of the best comedy musicals of all time. Zero Mostel plays his role as Pseudolus excellently, and the songs that go along with the hilarious antics are amazing. One only needs to listen to the song "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" and you will be rolling on floor in laughter.
Funny movie.......2007-03-30
Still one of the funniest movies I think I've ever seen. Do yourself a favor and rent it and see if you like it.

Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful.......2007-06-14
I don't know what I like better, the story or the music. The performances are absolutely riveting, convincing, hysterical. This movie gives the viewers a juicy taste of Jewish culture, with classic signature songs like "Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset." I love it for its flawless humor. Fiddler on the Roof is definitely a keeper!
Musical Masterpiece.......2007-04-18
One of the last great musicals Hollywood has given us. Topol shines brightly in this Norman Jewison directed marvel. Visually and musically stunning, A perfect film to make one laugh, cry, sing-along and think. Why don't we get many others like it today? One of my very favorite musicals. Favorite films for that matter. Cast to perfection.

Fiddler on the Roof DVD.......2007-02-21
A classic digitally restored. Who doesn't love Topol? Best of all...you don't have to be a "wealthy man" to enjoy it!
Matchmaker, Matchmaker. . .make me a match!.......2007-02-20
The plot of this musical motion picture touches the home base in just about everyone's life, regardless of politics, gender, view, or religion.
The basic premise is the breaking down of "old-school" traditions and incorporating new ones. With mature family members helplessly watching those previous barriers fall, in spite of their own point of view.
It takes the example of three daughters, in this particular family and setting, to demonstrate how far the breaking down of those barriers go. Each asking for just a little bit more compassion, understanding, and love.
The movie sets are exquisite and I don't use this term lightly. Even though it happens around a poverished village, it goes to show how rich and rewarding people can still live within those realms.
The music is so apart of the story and general mood, it doesnt matter if one is a movie musical fan or not.
My favorite musical sequence was the part when Tevye informs his wife of a made up dream he had, which is meant to become a bad omen for an already fixed marriage plan of the oldest daughter. He doesnt know how to explain to his wife, the fact that there is another real love affair going on, and needs to make it appear the fixed marriage plan is doomed.
Brilliant, and lively! Tradition!

This was the first James Bond adventure produced after the success of Star Wars, so it jumped on the sci-fi bandwagon by combining the suave appeal of Agent 007 (once again played by Roger Moore) with enough high-tech hardware and special effects to make Luke Skywalker want to join Her Majesty's Secret Service. After the razzle-dazzle of The Spy Who Loved Me, this attempt to latch onto a trend proved to be a case of overkill, even though it brought back the steel-toothed villain Jaws (Richard Kiel) and scored a major hit at the box office. This time Bond is up against a criminal industrialist named Drax (Michel Lonsdale) who wants to control the world from his orbiting space station. In keeping with his well-groomed style, Bond thwarts this maniacal Neo-Hitler's scheme with the help of a beautiful, sleek-figured scientist (played by Lois Chiles with all the vitality of a department-store mannequin). There's a grand-scale climax involving space shuttles and ray guns, but despite the film's popular success, this is one Bond adventure that never quite gets off the launching pad. It's as if the caretakers of the James Bond franchise had forgotten that it's Bond--and not a barrage of gizmos and gadgets (including a land-worthy Venetian gondola)--that fuels the series' success. Despite Moore's passive performance (which Pauline Kael described as "like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension"), Moonraker had no problem attracting an appreciative audience, and there are even a few renegade Bond-philes who consider it one of their favorites. --Jeff Shannon

For Your Nostalgia Only..........2007-06-18
Moonraker was the very first Bond film I saw. I saw it in the theater when I was 8 years old and thought it was one of the coolest movies ever.
Today, watching through adult eyes, I see that it's campy, silly, and downright unrealistic.
HOWEVER, this film introduced me to a life-long love of the James Bond franchise. I've seen every Bond film at the theater since Moonraker and had the joy of watching the older ones on video (then later on DVD).
I have started my James Bond DVD collection with Casino Royale (the 2006 version) and I'm working my way backwards. I am now down to Moonraker which prompted me to write this review.
Yes, there are MUCH better Bond films out there, but I still bought this one because it reminded me of when the world of Bond was something fresh and new (to me, at least) and reminds me of what it was like to be a kid again.
This film can be fun, if you're willing to overlook the campiness.
The music (by the legendary John Barry) is absolutely beautiful and the title theme sung by Shirley Bassey (her third and final theme) is one of the franchise's best.
A High Budget Parody?.......2007-06-18
I rank Moonraker 19th out of the 21 Bond movies. I'm not going waste a lot of time here. Dumb plot. Blank faced Bondbabe. Smarmy Moore. Dumbed down Jaws. This one is played for laughs as the script is basically one dreadful pun after another and practically every scene has a sight gag. The acting is pretty much mailed in by all parties. The scenery in Rio, the Amazon and Venice is beautiful and some of the stunts are pretty eye popping. Hence the two stars. Even a bad Bond has its moments. The space scenes simply have to be seen to be believed for the shody special effects and ugly mustard jump suits.
What was I thinking?.......2007-06-14
I remember seeing this when it was in the theaters (yes, I'm old), and I really liked it then. Watching it now..... ick
Roger Moore's Best Outing and a Top-notch Bond Adventure.......2007-04-30
Since I first saw this Bond waaaay back in '79 I have loved it. I've probably seen it dozens of times since then and I still enjoy it immensely.
The story is tight and exciting, the subplots and twists many, the characters, even the "Bond girls," intriguing and well fleshed out (no pun intended), the villian perhaps one of the most obviously intelligent and understatedly menacing of any other, the humor subtle and witty, and the over-all story together with its climactic conclusion are well written and quite satisfying.
All too often critics of this Bond film attempt to slough it off as derivative of Star Wars. It's not. There's nothing "Star Wars" about it except for the fact that the latter part of the film does happen to take place in Earth orbit. Of course, if this is all it takes to be parasitic of George Lucas' space adventure then so also would be any other film involving space locales. Unlike the focus of Star Wars, here there are no space aliens and no fantastical science-fiction flights of fancy, just great adventure taking place primarily here on the Earth, though finally venturing above the Earth just as other Bond adventures have ventured below its surface (e.g., Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only). It's a greatly believable (even for Bond) international adventure visiting numerous exotic locales worldwide while furthering an intriguing and suspenseful storyline chock full of exciting twists and turns you will want to watch over and over again.
Among the more memorable scenes, and far better than the most memorable of almost all other Bonds, were the opening sequence as Bond is thrown out of an airplane without a parachute and expertly "flies" - without special effects - to intercept the bad guy and wrestle from him his parachute (arguably the single most exciting opening of any of the Bond films, bar none), the initial meeting and opening exchange with Drax (such a refreshing departure from the charicatured, over-the-top, "mad scientist"-type villians antagonizing Bond in almost all other 007 outings; this time a true villian, finally), the drama of the centrifuge incident that almost killed Bond, the refreshing intelligence of Dr. Goodhead (despite the cheesy name), the hunting-"accident" killing of Drax's would-be assassin followed by the utter ruthlessness of Drax in "sic"-ing the dogs on his defenseless female employee (a very well-directed sequence that was horrifyingly beautiful to watch), the nerve gas factory scene and the "Andromeda Strain" atmosphere created when its full destructive power is accidently released, then Drax' cool appearance the following morning at the same location now magically transformed to truly magnificent King Louis XVIII splendor, his regal calm mirroring flawlessly the opulent palacial surroundings, the Rio de Janeiro sequences from the Drax warehouse, where Jaws reappears, to their re-match during the cable-car high-wire confrontation, then finally on to the exciting speedboat chase sequence, the space port, and then on to the space station, itself.
Once aboard the space station, Bond subtlely makes Jaws aware of the fact that he, too, will be killed by Drax and enters into an unspoken alliance with Bond to defeat Drax, who is finally and very satisfyingly dispatched at last through an airlock to Bond's pithy rejoiner "Take a giant leap for mankind." Shortly therafter we are treated to an uncharacteristically touching moment as Jaws reveals his tender side as he toasts his newfound love while the space station is blowing up around them, entreating her with the only words he was ever granted in any of the Bond films: "Here's to us."
And finally, I found very satisfyingly suspenseful the final sequence as Bond and Dr. Goodhead race in a space shuttle to hunt down the nerve-gas satellites, destroying them as they re-enter Earth's atmosphere while trying to keep from burning up themselves. From beginning to end I found the plot very well thought out and developed, highly engaging and exciting, and concluded in highly dramatic and wonderfully satisfying fashion.
Those who discount this superior Bond film simply for having dared to exit Earth's atmosphere at some point in the storyline reveal not any flaw inherent to the movie or its setting, but instead their own inability to appreciate a great Bond film simply for having dared to premiere so soon after Lucas' insipidly simplistic sci-fi movie.
Okay... let the rants begin! ;)
Slapstick, sci-fi, spy guy........2007-04-17
"Moonraker" is the James Bond movie that reached the nadir of cartoon antics that had plagued the world of 007 throughout the bell-bottomed seventies. It's a low point for many die-hard fans; a point where the series veered without shame from Hitchcock-like thrills to Max Sennett-like madness. For me, it's the guiltiest of pleasures. Read on.
As been observed by many, producer Albert R. Broccoli reeling from the world-wide success of "The Spy Who Loved Me" (James Bond's campy but self-assured comeback) took only the title and villain (Hugo Drax), from one of Ian Fleming strongest books to build what could have lazily been titled "The Spy Who Loved Me II." Replace the previous movie's sea world motif with outer space and you have essentially the same movie- Bond aided by equally adept female spy goes after megalomaniac bent on world destruction. Bond blows up megalomaniac's operation. Bond sleeps with female spy (this was also the exact template used for "Tomorrow Never Dies," but that's another review). That said, through nearly half of "Moonraker," returning screenwriter Christopher Wood does set up an intriguing mystery angle with our intrepid hero following nonsensical clues from what seems like the entire western hemisphere (A document in California, vials of poison in Venice, etc. etc...) But when the action starts, the filmmakers can't seem to reign themselves in and go for the cheap laugh time and time again.
I agree for those who like their Bond films shaken, not stirred, that there is a lot here to cause a spewed martini. For one, there is Roger Moore. The very name is a scourge to those who prefer Sean Connery or Daniel Craig's bad boy Bonds. After displaying a slight hard edge in the last half of "The Spy Who Loved Me," Moore gallivants through "Moonraker" like, well, Roger Moore- a likable, but flippant, jet setting, celebrity. Moore's Bond just sails too effortlessly throughout this adventure. Even some of the gorgeous (of course) Bond girls like Corrine Clery and Emily Bolton seem to robotically sleep with Bond as if they were programmed to do so. And then there's Jaws...As fiendishly good as Richard Kiel's Frankenstein Monster-of-a-hit-man was in TSWLM, bringing him back for a second outing in "Moonraker" and making him the "Coyote" to Moore's "Road Runner" leads to some the most draw-dropping, "jumping-the-shark" moments in the series history.
Still there is a lot that surprisingly dazzles here. Whatever you may feel about the movie's school boy humor, Moonraker is a slick, gorgeously photographed (the great Jean Tournier), action-packed package that moves along more zip than the oddball "Man With The Golden Gun" or the insanely plotted, (and the most debated among Bond fans) "Die Another Day." Lois Chiles is appealing as the Lauren Bacall-esque "Holly Goodhead" (wink, wink) and Michael Lonsdale is, oddly enough, a deadly series Bond villain giving off such lines as "Mr. Bond, you return with the inevitability of an unloved season" with such oily ease. "Moonraker" also has one of composer John Barry's more evocative scores that stubbornly soldiers on as if the movie was a true epic, not a lark. However, the true star of this entry is legendary art director Ken Adams. A master whose low-slung, futuristic set pieces marked the series' visual style beginning with "Dr. No," Adams, in his last Bond film to date, gives us a near orgy of complex walk ways and shimmering steel.

HD-DVD is awesome........2007-06-14
While HD-DVD is awesome, this movie is not. :) I remember seeing his when I was a kid and just had to get it. Movie is o.k., but I didn't get as big a kick out of it as I did when I was younger.
Picture is very good for a 30? year old movie. Sound is good but very front heavy. Did they even have surround back then?
Smokey Looks Awesome in HD.......2007-06-04
Smokey and the Bandit has never looked better since 1977 when it was shown on the big screen. The HD transfer is excellent and this disc comes with nice bonus features including a "Making of" segment in which Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham talk about the making of the film. This movie is just plain for the whole family. Relive the action all over again.

Amazon.com essential video
One of Roman Polanski's more overt comedies, this 1966 monster spectacle stars Jack MacGowran and Polanski as a clunky but heroic pair of vampire killers. Called upon to rescue the beautiful and buxom daughter (Sharon Tate) of an innkeeper from a Draculalike bloodsucker, the duo muddle through all sorts of scrapes, the most intense being a scene in which a room full of dancing vampires realize the human interlopers are the only ones in the room who are reflected in a mirror. Scary and funny, the film has some unforgettable set pieces, a terrific score, one of the few records of Tate's extraordinary beauty, and vibrant performances. Not exactly Polanski in a relaxed mode, but clear evidence of his estimable skills as a director of both brilliance and polish. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
One of Polanski's first mainstream films.......2007-06-20
Honestly, this movie isn't very good. For the time, it was an attempt at thinking outside the box -- which Polanski is known for. An interesting spin and an interesting plot. The acting definately left a lot to be desired. But the jewel in this crown... seeing Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate together on screen.
Great spoof........2007-06-13
This is a great spoof of vampire movies. It's quite funny, albeit slightly boring. I do love this movie though. I'd also like to recommend the musical based on this movie, "Tanz der Vampire."
not spooky, not funny, not sexy.......2007-04-12
There's a reason Polanski is not known as a comedy director. I dont know. Maybe this was funny by 60s standards? Laugh-in? This film certainly wasnt scarey. And the cut erotic scenes are G-rated by 2007 standards.
not funny, not scary, kinda boring.......2007-03-26
i was recommended to see this film after seeing the ever so brilliant and hilarious Young Frankenstein. i lost interest halfway through it sadly and had to skip around..which is a shame since i paid a good 15 bucks for it and the characters looked really promising in the beginning..the language and speaking is so slurred that i had to turn on subtitles. this movie to me seems like one of those old movies you would see on AMC and watch only when there is nothing else on tv... it is that boring....or maybe i just dont get it or something. anyways, rent it if you need to see it...do not expect a movie in the same league as young frankenstein
Memorable and Unique.......2007-03-15
This tongue in cheek horror spoof is wonderfully distracting (Sharon Tate comes to mind here- .WoW.stunning.It is also hilarous throughout. The film is very atmospheric and the set designs (castle roof top scenes and the castle itself for example- though there are many!) are just wonderful and very convincing. Not to mention the beautiful soundtrack which will remain with you long after the movie ends. Comes highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
The forerunner, almost a first draft, of "Munich".......2007-04-09
My understanding is that Spielberg based the more recent film "Munich" on the same book that this HBO film from 20 years earlier was based on, which would account for the eerily similar, almost identical, sequence of events and character development. What I found dumbfounding is that not only are the story, the characters, and the incidents the same, but the sequence, some of the scenes, even some of the dialogue, are nearly identical: the early recruitment scene with Golda Meir eating fruit and pouring tea, Avner having bad dreams, the cut-away to exterior shots when explosions happen inside buildings, etc. Munich was a tighter and slightly shorter film and it has Spielberg's panache. "Munich" also has a post-9/11 sensibility that this earlier film of course could not have had. This film is somewhat less conflicted than "Munich" is about good vs evil, revenge vs justice. There is psychological conflict in this film, but we have no doubt about who the good guys and the bad guys are.
This is a bit easier to watch because the gore and violence are circa 1986 HBO, not 21st century for the big screen. The acting, dialogue, and details are serviceable, not with the same subtlety or interest as in the later film.
Despite the wig and prosthetic facial changes, I didn't buy Colleen Dewhurst as Golda Meir for one second, and she didn't even try to change her voice or accent.
The film quality seemed a bit washed out to me. The DVD has no features; the choices are either Play film, or Scene selection.
very good!.......2007-01-10
far better than Munich, this movie give you more deatil about the main charecter Avner. exelent if you liked Munich then this you would like even more!
HBO Movie Done Well.......2006-04-12
In addition to the other reviews, this movie is an HBO release and is full screen on the DVD. It's intriguing at times, but moves slowly elsewhere (thus, editting could have been better). It's a good look into one of the Mossad's more infamous moments. In particular, Avner's interaction with Le Group is interesting and perhaps gives an insight into today's underworld of information trafficing. The movie isn't a docudrama per se nor a story about the hunt down for Black September, but more about Avner, the leader of the "Sword of Gideon" group. Thus, the story ends when he quits the Mossad. Overall, a good spy movie with lots of zingers.
Mivtazah Elohim.......2006-03-15
Mivtazah Elohim means the Wrath of God in Hebrew and this fore-runner to to the hit movie 'Munich' by Steven Spielberg is a classic. Prime Minister Golda Meir gave the orders and a Mossad "Kidon" team was despatched. In some ways 'Munich' is better, especially in the potrayal of human emotions and how the stress and pressure of living a life on the run takes it psychological toll on a person. Assassins have feelings too like all of us. This movie does not explore the psyche so much but is very true to life, and shows how a young gung ho Israeli commando is recruited by Mossad to terminate the enemies of Israel by extra-judicial means. He is trained in close up and personal killing with small easily concealable .22 calibre Beretta autoloading handguns, very different from his Army experience as the Trainer tells him. Europe becomes the war zone for this covert and brutal war where terrorist targets are surveilled and then executed mercilessly. Italy's historic and famous Beretta arms company must have made a fortune supplying handguns to Israel. Many Intelligence experst believe that only the Israeli Intelligence serveice has the expertise and even more important, the will and determination for this kind of covert mission. In any fight sometimes it is not the weapons or the plans that count, but the raw and steely determination to fight to the last drop of blood and win. However, is becoming like the terrorist justifiable in civilised society? Can the ends justify the means like Communism? Well, God only know, that is , if you happen to believe in God. Do we fight fire with fire and thereby create an inferno or fight fire with water and turn the other cheek. However, as many surviving victims will testify, when a terrorist has his loaded, cocked and locked AK47 aimed at your heart, forgiveness is the very last thing on his or her mind. Will love and forgiveness work in such a situation? Waht do you think, really? Turn the other cheek or fight, that is the 64,000 dollar question. Steven Bauer is excellent in this movie. His potrayal of the Type A personality dynamic Commando soldier who is willing to fight for his country is very accurate. As Friedrich Nietsche has said, 'He who fights the dragon, becomes the dragon'. As long as war exists in the minds of men, bullets, bombs and blood will litter the battelfields of the world, as they have done so for so many years. C'est la guerre et c'est la vie. By The Travelling Gourmet

After the worldwide success of A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles and director Richard Lester reunited for a follow-up film, Eight Arms to Hold You. Well, that wasn't the final title; a pleading Lennon-McCartney tune provided the catchier handle: Help! A loose semispoof of the globe-trotting James Bond pictures, Help! has always been considered a somewhat disorganized comedown from its predecessor; but it presents "the famous Beatles" even more clearly as the English cousins of the Marx Brothers. The plot has an Eastern religious cult declaring that the new ring on Ringo's finger is the key element in a human sacrifice; they will stop at nothing to obtain it. Meanwhile, a mad scientist (crazed Victor Spinetti, who also appeared in A Hard Day's Night and Magical Mystery Tour) believes that if he has the ring, he could--dare we say it?--rule the world. The songs, including "Ticket to Ride" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," are filmed with gleeful ingenuity, in locations such as the Bahamas, an Austrian ski resort, and the Salisbury Plain. The relentless nonsense becomes nearly the equivalent of a swinging-'60s Alice in Wonderland: for instance, Paul shrinks to the size of a gum wrapper, John fishes a season ticket out of his soup, George wears a top hat on the ski slopes, the lads sing the "Ode to Joy" to a lion. Oh, and the film is dedicated to Elias Howe, "who in 1846 invented the sewing machine." Brilliant. --Robert Horton

DIVERTIDISIMA!!!.......2007-07-03
THE BEATLES' LEGEND CONTINUES WITH THE FOUR LADS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD........2007-06-12
I will be writing a review on the legendary historic landmark Rock n' Roll movie simply entitled "HELP" starring the FAB FOUR themselves, AND STILL the greatest band music ever produced. I give you THE PRIDE OF ENGLAND and BRITAIN'S MOST FAVORITE SONS OF THEM ALL, T-H-E B-E-A-T-L-E-S! "HELP" was originally released in theaters in 1965 by United Artists and on DVD in 1997 by MPI Home Video. May I also add that this particular DVD release is a great DVD recording and is not a sloppy recording off a VHS tape. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic landmark film or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
What can I possibly say about THE BEATLES that hasn't already been said? Like the review I recently wrote on the film "A HARD DAYS NIGHT," THE BEATLES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's ALL-TIME MOST sacred anthems ever. THE BEATLES will also forever be remembered as being THE GREATEST BAND MUSIC EVER PRODUCED. 1965 was a great year for THE BEATLES. THE BEATLES would be awarded as recipients of the Members of The British Empire by the Queen of England. THE BEATLES would began their 1965 World Tour to highly critically acclaim. The climax of the successful 1965 World Tour would be the legendary historic landmark concert at New York's Shea Stadium on 15 August 1965. This legendary concert was the first of its kind ever and would mark the first time that any band ever performed in a stadium. (No disrespect to ELVIS but not even ELVIS did that.) But before the 1965 World Tour would begin, THE BEATLES were on location to film another movie for their loyal fans. Originally called "EIGHT ARMS TO HOLD YOU," the film would be changed to "HELP." Following the release and extreme success of 1964's mega hit Rock n' Roll movie "A HARD DAYS NIGHT," THE BEATLES were so thrilled and delighted that their movie did so well at the box office that it was only natural that the band would film another by popular demand. THE BEATLES, true to their words, did not disappoint their loyal fans either and would deliver "HELP" as another present as a token of their appreciation.
"HELP," in itself alone, is another great BEATLES film that also contains THE BEATLES' magical music that speaks for itself. "HELP" contains, once again, THE BEATLES as their normal witty and funny charming selves which alone, makes this film great to watch. "HELP" also contains groundbreaking live film and video performances of the magnificent theme song "Help," the mild Rocker "The Night Before," the beautifully slow romantic acoustic "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," George Harrison's masterpiece Rocker "I Need You," the incredible soothing mellow Rocker "Another Girl," the blistering Rocker "Ticket To Ride" and the breathtaking Rocker "You're Gonna Lose That Girl."
I can take all day and tell you about the whole concept and plot of this legendary historic landmark film, but I do not want to spoil it for all of the new BEATLES fans. I would definitely hope that all of you would go out and purchase this film and see it for yourself. Doing this, I feel confident that by letting you be the judge for yourselves that you will fall in love with this film as I have. I hope all of you will purchase this great film, this is one great film that no BEATLES fan should be without.
In closing, all I will say is that THE BEATLES are the greatest band that music ever produced. The accomplishments, contributions and achievements that THE BEATLES have given us speak for itself and will never be forgotten or denied. THE BEATLES are not just another one of Rock Royalty, THE BEATLES DEFINE AND ARE ROCK ROYALTY. THE BEATLES have received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. THE BEATLES will forever live in all of our hearts as those four witty and funny young men from Liverpool, England who call themselves John Paul George and Ringo. The critics were truly right when they said that THE BEATLES were the "FOUR LADS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD!" In my opinion, that is definitely a very appropriate statement to make. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEATLES FOREVER! R.I.P. John Lennon (1940-1980) and George Harrison (1943-2001). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
The Night Before and Another Girl.......2007-04-26
The singing scenes of this movie are worth remembering and each time you see them, these guys glisten. Theres George Harrison singing "I Need You" very well. This is definitely a very unserious movie but much of it a classic to keep. "Another Girl" belongs to Paul McCartney, he sings it way cool and draws the line. Ringo is royal to the beat. John Lennon is naughty and inquisitive. These guys never let me down. They're just a downright great band and fascinating!
An Underrated Classic.......2007-02-16
This spoof of James Bond is errie to watch in this post 9/11 world. The story of the death cult willing to take down an icon of western civilization to fulfill its ritual seems prophetic in retrospect. The scene with Leo McKern as the cult leader talking theology with the Anglican priest as an equal says much about the state of modern western civilization.
ITS THE BEATLES!!!.......2007-02-06
IF YOU ARE A BOOMER AND LOVE THE BEATLES, YOU WILL LOVE THIS. THE MUSIC IS THE BEST PART. THE SECOND IS THAT YOU GET TO LOOK AT THESE WONDERFUL GUYS DOING PRANKS AND ANTICS THAT ARE LIGHT-HEARTED AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL
AS IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO THE 60'S. SIT BACK AND ENJOY.

Harrowing, funny, and immediately addictive, the 1979 British television series Danger UXB stars Anthony Andrews as Army Lieutenant Brian Ash, an engineering student whose excitement about his rapid commission as an officer during World War II is tempered by his unenviable post with a bomb disposal unit. Assigned to a fatality-heavy team that defuses unexploded German bombs scattered throughout London during the blitz, Ash faces down his terror and eventually becomes the closest thing to an expert one can be dismantling sometimes booby-trapped ordnance. In doing so, he earns the respect of his superiors as well as from the enlisted men working under him, and his protracted survival is nothing short of miraculous considering the tragic number of friends and colleagues Ash loses.
There is a dark side, however. The longer Ash sticks with his unit, the more obsessive he becomes about his responsibility to keep London safe. Meanwhile, his nerves grow frayed and his morale collapses. Ash's desperate romance with a married woman (Judy Geeson) provides him little to hold onto, and when a true crisis ambushes his spirit toward the end, one can't be sure if he's headed for the scrap heap of permanent casualties. Based on the recollections of an actual wartime bomb disposer, Danger UXB was created by John Hawkesworth, who later produced (and wrote many episodes for) the fantastic Sherlock Holmes TV series starring Jeremy Brett. Despite many tense moments in Danger UXB's 13 episodes--one is always expecting a bomb to blow away a favorite character--the show is also graced by great humor (Ash's crew sometimes bring to mind Sergeant Bilko's hustlers) and a warm, likable cast. Andrews himself, perhaps, has never been better. This boxed set includes a History Channel documentary, "Bomb Squad." --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Worth the Wait!.......2007-06-18
When this series was first aired in the US, I heard how good it was, but it never was seen in this area. Over the years I'd looked at the VHS tapes, but they were expensive and usually in the wrong format. On a whim I happened to check Amazon for them recently, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find them in the US format, DVD, and priced very reasonably. I've watched about half of them so far, and it has certainly been worth the wait. Fantastic series that looks as if it were filmed today. You won't be displeased.
First Rate! - Hurrah for the CRE!!.......2007-05-09
A first-rate BBC series that was originally shown in the US back in the early 1980s or so on PBS. I must fall into that catergory of people who first saw it then and have not seen it since. Still its one of those works that holds up well over the years. The acting is superb all around. The story draws you into the characters and the times they lived in during the Blitz in 1940. Few productions give you this kind of qaulity production anymore. Sure there aren't the fancy special effects stuff of today because this is a story for adult viewers, not grown-up kids wanting just a lot of noise instead of decent plot and character development.
Americans don't know what its like to have all their major cities bombed as happened to the British during the Battle of Britain in 1940, commonly known as the Blitz over there. To see this series you get some idea what daily life might have been like. Of course the Germans would get it much worse when the Royal Air Force and US 8th Air Force returned the favor to Germany just a few years later. Yes, there is a lot of none action in this series, which endeavors to show what life was like in that unique period for Britain. The romance between Ash and Susan is a prime example, but it is not annoying like so many obligatory romances in these kinds of stories generally are.
Everything in this series is realistic and believeable. Even the filler is interesting because it sheds light on the way people lived then. The DVD edition would have benefited a bit by having a sub-title option because the varied accents and numerous Britishisms make the dialouge difficult to follow at times. This is a very British production in that sense, and US viewers not familier with the lingo might have a tough time. As they say, the UK and US are two countries seperated by a common language! This series certainly shows that!
The DVD extra feature about bomb disposal was not much of an addition. The show hardly touches on the WW2 period in the UK, and spends most of its time with the NYPD bomb squad! You couldn't find something almost more non-related than this, even though in theory there is a connection. I guess the A & E people had nothing else on this topic to drop in. Too bad the BBC were not consulted for something more appropriate. Even with these two minor issues the series still deserves 5 stars and will richly reward the viewer every time. Hurrah for the CRE! (Corps Royal Engineers)
Nice to finally get my hands on this........2007-03-14
I remember seeing bits and pieces of this series on Public Television in the 70's but between school, college and military service, I never saw the entire series in sequence. This DVD collection was a brilliant piece of work which provides you with the all the episodes in one fell swoop. You follow and grow to love the men who, often with little or now training, are charged with defussing and disposing of unexploded ordinance dropped by the Nazis on England and placed by Britain for defense.
I didn't expect a DD soundtrack and wasn't disappointed in that but I was saddened not to have any bonus interviews or documentary materials included with DVD. These oversights are what kept me from giving this box set a '5". Worth every penny though...

One of the Best Brit WWII dramas ever filmed!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-09
I saw this when it first appeared on American television on 'Masterpiece Theater' when it originally was aired in 1978/79. It was superb. I am watching it again, on a very good DVD player and HD TV. It is still great. If you have seen 'Band of Brothers' you will love this. It sets the standard that was carried forward with BofB. Buy this. Worth every thing.Got a great price too.
Loved it!.......2006-11-11
I enjoyed watching this on Masterpiece Theater in the early 1980s. It has not disappointed me. I am now watching it with my 14 year old son, and he likes it too. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys quality drama, history, and some adventure.

How Can Anyone Resist Alfie!?.......2007-06-13
Jude Law truly MADE this movie shine! With the accent, the looks...how can you really not enjoy this movie? Plus the fact that he takes you on this journey of how he gets involved with these women of different status, is I think very interesting and well basicly fun to watch.
You need to like movies that tell stories within a story, if you don't this movie will feel like it's 12hrs long.
I love it however, at least rent it first...but also I do like this version MUCH better then the original one!
Perfect addition to any movie collectors, well collection.
Alfie.......2007-06-02
Funny movie and well photographed. Sienna Miller does an excellent job as an English "bird" of the 60's.
Alfie-Mic k Jagger/Dave Stewart.......2007-05-31
This is a CD with a movie tie in rather than vice versa. The star here is Mick Jagger and always will be...I mean is any one star in this movie bigger? Sure Jude Law is talented and the women are gorgeous...everybody is eye candy, the story is better than so so. Do these people/characters really exist somewhere in the universe? I've never met them, but fantasy is what Hollywood is about. Back to Mick...how did the movie get him to score the wonderful songs here and Dave Stewart is so great, please Eurythmic reunion is overdue (forget the Police). I wish this movie would have done better commercially, but probably no one related to it. I think it is a great sociological study of people without morals.
Excellent Remake.......2007-05-04
Sad to say I haven't seen the original(it is in my pile of unwatched discs). That's a blessing because I don't have to make unfair comparisons and judge this version on it's own merits. And it is smashing. This is a film that promotes morality and fidelity despite the central character being a cad. The movie is at once pro-woman and pro-life. I wouldn't say that Alfie gets so much as a comeuppance but an education in human relationships. Credit Ju
