Amazon.com essential video

Forefather of Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean, Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot--a recurring character in several of his movies--is a blithely clumsy troublemaker, an insouciant twit who leaves uproar in his wake without being aware of it. Trying to describe this 1953 comedy is next to impossible except to say it is a series of vignettes at a vacation resort, with the distracted Hulot providing a lot of laughs. Tati directs, and in a way what that really means is that he composes this movie with a perfect eye and ear for the comic possibilities in everything: composition, lighting, minimal marble-mouth dialogue, certain sounds (a duck call, a door repeatedly opening and shutting). This is a superior work that ranks among all-time classic comedies. --Tom Keogh

Description

Pipe-smoking Monsieur Hulot, Jacques Tati's endearing clown, takes a holiday at a seaside resort where his presence provokes one catastrophe after another. Tati's wildly funny satire of vacationers determined to enjoy themselves includes a series of precisely choreographed sight gags involving dogs, boats and firecrackers. The first entry in the Hulot series is a masterpiece of gentle slapstick.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jacques Tati at his absolute best.......2007-05-12

This is the funniest film I know. It is sly, witty, wistful, gentle and almost entirely free from dialogue! And it is as good-natured as a 1950s summer holiday at the sea side in France could be. The characters are caricatures, indeed they are, but the situations and the brilliant comic timing of that genius, Jacques Tati, take this film far far beyond heavy-handed slapstick farce. My father's judgement was that having characters shout and shriek at each other, do crass double takes and fall down does not amount to comedy (test this criterion against almost any modern American "humor"). In M.Hulot's Holiday, the characters do all their acting with the subtle or not-so-subtle expressions of their faces, a raised eyebrow, a Gallic shrug.
Are people often funny? Yes. You only have to observe them, best of all when they are trying to relax at the beach, to see that. Well-observed children, waiters, tycoons, old couples, youths...all stumble around the incomparable Jacques Tati. And, if you ever needed convincing that black-and-white photography is best for portraiture, this film will do that. Are there films which really are "must see". Yes. This one.

5 out of 5 stars great film! I am so glad that they released this on DVD. .......2007-05-07

Mr. HULOT'S HOLIDAY is a great addition to the Criterion Collection film family. I honestly don't know why they waited so long! Jacques Tati (as the title character) was a marvelous physical comedian, from France, and this film showcases him at his loopy best. As a note, there is much more to Hulot's clumsiness than meets the eye. Under that bumbling lies the heart of a romantic and a rather suave gentleman. The gist of this film basically centers on Hulot's holiday, at sea, complete with catchy, low-key incidental music (I doubt you will get the song out of your head), plenty of misunderstandings and mishaps that really don't need translation. That's perfect because the dialogue in this film is minimal. Basically, it feels like the director just stepped back and let Mr. Hulot take over on the film. It's very entertaining. They should show this film more often. In fact, I propose that there be a Jacquest Tati revival. Lord knows we need something to laugh about, during these turbulent times in the world.

5 out of 5 stars I just love Mr. Hulot.......2007-04-12

First time I saw this movie, was in the 70's in a movieteater in Denmark, Bellevue Teater. Now I'm in USA and just got all my old movie's on DVD. This on is, what Mr. Hulot is about. A lot of fun. But then again, you have to like Jacques Tati and the way he plays and moves, the cutting -Jacques Tati's way.
You can only get into a good mode.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies of all time........2007-03-24

This movie will not be everyone's cup of tea, and if you are looking for excitement, you won't find it here, but this is a movie that I enjoy watching over and over. It is a great de-stressing feel-better movie. It is the closest thing I know of to a relaxing vacation at the seashore. The location, characters, and comedy all combine to make it an excellent movie.

5 out of 5 stars Still hilarious after all these years.......2007-01-10

The DVD of Mr. Hulot's Holiday will have you chortling, snickering and flat-out laughing all by yourself. Although it is in French, with English subtitles, no knowledge of French is necessary because humor transcends language. Mr. Hulot is quite oblivious to the quirky situations he creates at the seaside resort hotel where he is spending his holiday, always maintaining his cheery spirit in the face of the catastrophes of others.

It's a must-have for anyone who appreciates the art of sight gags and old-time silent movie humor.

4 out of 5 stars A First Movie Love.......2006-02-27

As a boy growing up in Guyana formerly British Guiana with a moderately strict household. I was introduced to the world of mucis and song via the BBC. Of course Cliff Richard was King. The second movie I ever saw was Summer Holiday in Georgetown. It set the tone for the great psssion I have for Film and Film History. The preformances were absolutely natural and seemed so very real that I took the trip across Europe right along with the gang. A simple and fun story cemented with great songs. I highly recommend this for new fans to discover.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Movie.......2005-06-27

Summer Holiday is pure enjoyment from beginning to end. If you are a Cliff Richard fan you owe it to yourself to get this movie for your collection.

The three nostalgic British musicals in the Cliff Richard Collection are a good reminder that, thanks to a few short years in the 1960s, Sir Cliff can legitimately include "film star" on his already exceptional show business résumé. The Young Ones (1961), Summer Holiday (1963), and Wonderful Life (1964) would make tame fare for a teen audience today, but they retain a polished and honest charm that might surprise the sharpest of cynics.

First and foremost, of course, they were Cliff Richard vehicles: designed to showcase his all-around talents and capitalize on his first, heady wave of pop chart success. They are also unashamed homages to the heyday of the MGM B-musical with familiar themes: let's put on a show/save the youth club/make a film. But with up-and-coming directors Sidney Furie and Peter Yates making imaginative and sophisticated use of wide-angle camerawork and fresh, snappy choreography by Herbert Ross and Gillian Lynne, they also have plenty of assets other than Richard's wholesome appeal. There are some fine set pieces and surreal flashes, notably the history of cinema in Wonderful Life and the extraordinary mime sequence in Summer Holiday. They also tap into the very British energy of a group of young actors and dancers including Una Stubbs, Susan Hampshire, Melvyn Hayes, and Richard O'Sullivan, as well as Richard's band at the time, the Shadows. For sheer verve, the films deserve to be seen on their own merits. --Piers Ford

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And About the Picture Quality.......2007-04-06

I bought this collection because I'm a big Cliff Richard fan, and these musicals are a lot of fun. I was expecting an OK picture transfer onto DVD, because these are pretty old and I figured no one would really care.

What a pleasant surprise!

I had just bought a new HD-DVD player, and even though these aren't in HD, the picture quality is just stunning. All three are fine transfers, with good sound too.

Like the other comments say, "Summer Holiday" is the best of the lot, but all three are good nostalgic fun.

If you like 1960's era musicals, you can't go wrong with this set.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Find.......2007-01-11

I was very happy to see this item on Amazon. I had watched all these movies as a child growing up in the UK and wanted my kids to see them. They were in great condition and the movies ran without any problems.
I am very happy with this purchase

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-03-11

I really enjoy these three films!!! It's quite dificult to look in stores, but I found it here.

5 out of 5 stars Silly gone on that Cliff Richard.......2004-04-29

As handsome as his marionette Cliff Richard Jr. in the 60's british movie Thunderbirds Are Go, Sir Cliff Richard shows as the brightest star in the universe through three delightful movies. I was just glad to have found the collection after listening to Richard's songs on karaoke. My favorite is Summer Holiday, but I recommend watching it last out of the three movies. They are all brimming with laughs, love, and heart melting vocals. You're in for a real treat!

Description

Long, long ago, the North Pole was ruled by the good fairy Lady Boreal and her enemy was the wicked wizard Winterbolt. To protect Santa Claus from Winterbolt's foggy fury, Lady Boreal grants Rudolph the Reindeer a magical, glowing nose. Years later, Rudolph and his friend Frosty the Snowman are called on to save a needy circus at a special 4th of July benefit. But their big-top act turns to big-time trouble when Winterbolt appears -- with a plan to steal Frosty's magic hat and extinguish Rudolph's legendary nose! Brought to shing Animagic life with the voices of Mickey Rooney, Ethel Merman, Red Buttons and Shelley Winters, this feature-length fable is a must-see for all seasons.

Year: 1979 Directors: Arthur Rankin, Jr., and Jules Bass

4 out of 5 stars Another Rankin/Bass Christmas Classic.......2007-07-02

Many used to recall ABC originally aired most of the Rankin/Bass Ani-Magic stop-motion specials while CBS aired Rudolph and the animated Frosty (of course, the Frosty spin-off, Frosty's Winter Wonderland was aired on ABC).

So witnessing the original special on ABC was definitely a treat and the fact both were actually put into Ani-Magic rather than just animation. The clever thing I loved about Rankin/Bass was how they could take something and give it a unique spin.

'Christmas in July,' was originally a name of a film, and later used by retailers as sort of a connotation of Summer Sales. But here, Rankin/Bass put a whole new unique origin behind Rudolph's red nose. Apparently before St. Nick wound up at the North Pole (with great allusions to the other Rankin/Bass specials, by the way), there was a wicked wizard known as Winterbolt.

After centuries of observing his ruthless, and apathetic ways, the Lady Borealis decided on taking action and sealing the wizard into a deep sleep with her magic. Regrettably, as Time marched on, Lady Borealis realized she could no longer contain the vile wizard. So with the remaining bit of her magic, she placed a spell upon a young reindeer, and as a result, he inherited a glowing red nose.

Ironically, Winterbolt discovers things have changed at the North Pole, and decides to spoil Santa's reputation with the children of the world. Inspired by his infamous genie of the staff (which obviously the Genie was getting his schemes from the Brain), Winterbolt uses his Ice Dragons to whip up a horrible winter storm on Christmas Eve. But as the story goes, Rudolph saved the day (note, no mention of Yukon, Hermie or the Snow Beast is mentioned here, which makes one wonder if the Snow Beast was once in the employ of Winterbolt, but let's not start analyzing here).

Naturally, Winterbolt isn't thrilled with this outcome, until he discovers if Rudolph dares use his nose for a selfish and wicked purpose, the reindeer's nose will be extinguished. After a brief futile attempt in doing so with the direct approach, Winterbolt retreats to his castle and learns about Milton, the Ice Cream man.

Every July, Milton comes and picks up a batch of ice cream for the Sea Side Circus at the Beach from the storehouse Santa lets him use. Except this time, Milton has his own problems. Milton's in love with the circus' tightrope walker, and naturally proposed to her. But on the day of their wedding, an evil carney has come to foreclose on the circus. (Here Ethyl Merman plays not only as the tightrope walker's mother, but owner and ringmaster of the circus.) And unless the circus can raise the money in time, there will be no more circus.

Mind you, this show was done in the Eighties, so you have to suspend some disbelief, since Winterbolt jumps at the chance for a scheme. Here, Milton suggests if Rudolph and Frosty come back with him, people from miles around would pay to see them. Though Frosty's kids and Crystal would love to go to the circus, Frosty reminds them if they went to the beach in July, they'd instantly melt.

Enter Winterbolt, who kindly pretends to help the Snow Family with special amulets to protect them from the heat. The catch, the amulets' powers cease when the final firework on the Fourth fades away. Naturally, it doesn't take Columbo to see what ol' Winterbolt has in store.

Anyway, rather than spoil the rest of the plot for you. This was one of Rankin/Bass' better holiday excursions because it was the first one to use several past Rudolph and Santa Claus specials to tie-in some of the backstories as well as provide a means for moving the plot along.

Now the interesting thing I note about 'Christmas In July,' was the writers currently were using specials which were aired more frequently on the networks. Because you'll notice a lot of cameos from characters from the current past specials, but at the same time, you wonder what happened to certain characters from the original specials of both Rudolph and Frosty. But the good thing here is, the story is rather well-conceived, you don't really care too much about continuity here.

And the real funny thing most people don't remember, before ABC Family started airing this special in July. I can recall when local cable channels started doing 'Christmas in July,' gimmicks for Summers sweeps, and the first thing they'd air was this special. However unlike this DVD version, the syndicated version had been edited for time constraints, so sometimes the altered one made no sense in several spots.

Overall, 'Christmas in July,' was one of those great specials you'd see in a blue moon, and was one of the rare ones which wasn't marred by commericalism you now see in most Holiday specials, or contain preachy morals as well. It was just fun to watch. Whether you're watching this during the Holidays, or on the Fourth, 'Christmas in July,' is definitely a purchase worth getting.

2 out of 5 stars Frosty gets puppet-animated. Rudolph gets tricked. Children get confused........2005-12-30

I guess the highlight of this feature film is that we finally get to see Frosty the Snowman in Rankin/Bass's trademark stop-motion puppet-animation process, Animagic! Now, don't get me wrong, the original TV specials "Frosty the Snowman" and the sequel "Frosty's Winter Wonderland" were great but I think we all wish that they were done in puppet-animation like Rudolph, Jack Frost and Santa Claus. Unfortunately, that may be one of the only highlights of this film.

At a running time of over 95 minutes, there is very little to keep the story rolling. There is also an over abundance of non-sensical plot twists and flashbacks that even I found confusing, let alone the children this movie was targeted for. And unless your child is a fan of showtunes (and c'mon what child isn't?), then the songs which appear every few minutes will most likely bore them.

The plot concerns the evil King Winterbolt who was put into a long deep sleep by the magical Lady Boreal. Upon awakening, he finds there is a new king of the North Pole named Santa Claus, and decides to make him get lost in a blizzard courtesy of his snow-breathing dragons so that he may once again rule the North Pole with his evil ways. The only problem is Rudolph's nose, which he decides must be extinguished for his plans to be carried out. In one of the many flashback sequences we learn that Rudolph's shiny red nose which came from the magic of Lady Boreal, will go out if it is ever used for bad purposes, even once.

King Winterbolt decides to offer Frosty and his family magic emulets that will allow them to visit the great 4th of July Circus by the Sea without melting, but only until the "Final Fireworks Fade on the Fourth". Santa Claus agrees to pick them all up when the fireworks end and whisk them back to the North Pole before the Frosty and his wife and two children are turned into puddles of water.

But, Winterbolt's snow breathing dragons whisk up a storm to keep Santa and Mrs. Claus from reaching the circus in time. Meanwhile, Winterbolt gets some help from a mean-spirited reindeer named Scratcher, and the two decide to use their sneaky ways to blackmail Rudolph into using his nose for bad.

If this seems confusing, imagine actually watching this film or better yet, imagine a child watching this film! Like many of R/B's later efforts, this one is rooted more in the magic and mystical style of "Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" than the fairytale-ish style of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".

There are some crazy songs which I found very amusing, like "Don't Let The Parade Pass You By" which is sung by Ethel Merman in her crazy style. There are also some special guest stars including Jack Frost from "Jack Frost" and Big Ben the whale from "Rudolph's Shiny New Year". In fact, there are a lot of nice touches and this film with the three biggest stars of Christmas could have been really good, if only the writing were better, some of the songs were scrapped and the running time was shortened.

If you are a fan of Rankin/Bass's work, you will not want to miss this one although you most likely will have trouble getting your kids to sit through the whole thing with you.

**Warning!!** The DVD release of this film has the sound very badly out-of-sync which annoys one throughout the movie! Because of this I lowered my rating for this film from 3 to 2 stars. I'm surprised that Warner Bros would allow a DVD to be released like this, and what's worse is that the former VHS release did not have this problem!! Shame on you, Warner Brothers!

5 out of 5 stars A lovely film indeed!.......2005-12-05

A fan of the Christmas classics as well, I feel that this sequel works quite well with the other films. Is it long? Perhaps. Is it scary? Not really. It does get dramatic just as much as it is cheerful. We get to see the Origin of Rudolph's Nose as well as Frosty's Hat.

In the spirit of Christmas, this film is well worth it. In July? Absolutely, especially when the winter temperatures seem to be gone forever and you begin to reminisce about winter and such.

Overall, this film grows on you, just because if you saw it as a child, you have a personal bond with it.

5 out of 5 stars A MOVIE FOR EVERYONE !!.......2006-12-16

Finally a modern movie with the the old quality charm and warmth of the older classics! Once you begin watching, you won't want to stop until you have seen it all. It has everything that you could want in a movie: suspense, warmth, a plot that will surprise and amaze you, happiness, tears, and a surprise ending. Now for the bonus. There is no foul language or inappropriate content. All ages can watch this film together. This is one DVD that my family will probably wear out.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie!.......2006-08-09

This was a wonderful, magical movie. My sister & I loved it. I liked how Katie learned about friendship and I liked the ice skating. The North Pole was cool. Blizzard was funny, but she really cared about others. We watched it during a heat wave, but can't wait til Christmas to watch it again.

5 out of 5 stars THE MEANING OF FRIENDSHIP.......2005-11-24

I have to admit I'm a sucker for gooey holiday movies, and there will probably be some of you out there who find BLIZZARD a tad too coy and sentimental. BUT it's message is a good one---friendships last forever, even when the friend is not around. The fake snow looks lovely and Christopher Plummer is pictured as a Father Christmas type eschewing the traditional red and white suit for the long, beautifully fashioned coats. Zoe Warner is a delightful young leading lady; Kevin Pollak seems to have fun with his semi-villainous role; Brenda Blethyn is a charming storyteller and Whoopi Goldberg gives Blizzard enjoyable life. Whether it's excellent film-making or not (ROOTS LeVar Burton directed with a cameo as a nightwatchman), it brought both smiles and a tear or two. And that's what I like in my Christmas movies. Merry Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Holiday Find.......2005-11-10

I was very happy to add this movie to our Christmas movie collection. This is very warm and wonderful family movie with a great message. Sure to quickly become a holiday tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this wonderful Christmas picture.......2005-11-09

For my money, this movie should become a Christmas classic. Terrific performances from Brenda Blethyn and Kevin Polack. Christopher Plummer is perfect as Santa Claus, and Zoe Warner is a major find. For his first feature film, LeVar Burton has delivered a real gem. A great movie to watch with the whole family.
