She stole your heart (or turned your stomach, depending on your perspective) with her show-stealing delivery in the hit documentary The Aristocrats. With Jesus Is Magic, comedienne extraordinaire Sarah Silverman is hell-bent on marking her own territory. Jesus Is Magic is a more or less a one-hour variety show, littered with musical numbers and comedic vignettes wedged between video footage of her live act. Though humorous in parts, most of the vignettes and songs are a little bland. You can't help but think they are mere fillers to stretch the film to an hour. The real essence of the film, however, is Sarah Silverman live on stage, mic in hand, delivering the goods. After sitting through Jesus, you will undoubtedly feel Sarah Silverman's magic and find her extremely funny. You may, however, not be able to pinpoint why. Silverman's act is extremely crass, vulgar, obnoxious, disgusting, heavy on race-laced humor, and downright gross in parts. The amazing thing about Sarah Silverman's material is that if you repeated it to a friend, or read it in an article, you probably would think it was base, childish, and just not that funny. But what makes the material sparkle is Sarah's deadpan, blunt, matter-of-fact delivery and perfect comedic timing. Not to mention she is super foxy, which has a way of amplifying her humor for better or worse. Jesus Is Magic is proof that Sarah Silverman is the smartest and funniest comedienne on the circuit today. We just hope the next release is a full performance, minus the filler. --Rob Bracco

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Awesome.......2007-06-27

The stand-up is spectacular. I was kind of annoyed/disappointed by the bits in between. I love Bob Odenkirk. I mean, LOVE him. Yet, I didn't like his role in this movie. He wasn't used correctly.

    3 out of 5 stars not great.......2007-06-19

She's more politically incorrect than funny. I groaned and rolled my eyes more than I laughed out loud. If I had been watching it with friends who would have been offended, I would have felt even worse. But can she sing! She should concentrate on that.

2 out of 5 stars Long Way to Go.......2007-06-10

About 20% of her material is genuinely funny. Most polished professional comedians can breath easy. Silverman has a long way to go before she can be fairly considered a great comedian. Right now she's coasting on her cuteness and her willingness to say absolutely anything for a cheap shocked giggle. Sort of a good looking female Borat. What happens when her cute-girl-with-a-filthy-mouth schitck gets old and people start to ask, "what else ya got"?

3 out of 5 stars Sarah Siverman is quite funny, but this needs more polishing.......2007-06-06

I am a Sarah Siverman fan as she is one of very few comics, especially female, to let it all hang out and see what happens. Her dark humor may be very insulting to those who are easilt offended, but to me the more un-pc that she is, the funnier I find her.

While I did not see this with high expectations as I am not a huge fan of stand-up acts (which is what this piece is at its core), even those werer not fully met. Sarah is cute, funny, and her play on words would have made for a good 20 minute short. Instead we get over an hour of songs, skits, and other filler, to try and give it some air by getting out off the stage. Some stuff works, some works for a while, and some is just not funny.

If you are a fan, rent it and watch it with other Sarah fans, and you'll have on OK time. Now that Margaret Cho has become almost an irrelevant one trick pony, Sarah is one of the few truly funny females around who mixes it up. If anyone saw the 2007 MTV Movie Awards and found her funny, you could do much worse than seeing this as most "comedy" movies are just not very funny. Humor is hard work and Sarah is an impish little marvel who I'd love to see in a more fully realized vehicle.

    1 out of 5 stars God-awful.......2007-06-04

The movie is basically a comedy routine generously (and thankfully) interspersed with some sketch comedy. Her pacing is so slow, it's as if she was told that she needed an hour's worth of comedy, but she only had 20 minutes of material. Then, instead of coming up with 40 more minutes, she just slowed down her joke delivery by one-third.

And the jokes aren't even very funny. Most of the laughter from the audience seems to be of the nervous kind. Brash and offensive jokes work when you don't do them ALL THE TIME. That way, the audience is caught off-guard when you go "zag" and the audience is expecting you to "zig". But she relies so heavily on the "I-can't-believe-she-said-that" style, that the audience comes to expect it.

    Unbearable.

Walter Matthau rules in this sentimental film about an elderly man who refuses to be sent to a nursing home and befriends a runaway pregnant teenager. It's a must see!!

5 out of 5 stars At last on DVD!.......2003-05-22

A charming film with Matthau giving an oscar-nominated performance as a fifth-wheel grandfather living with his son (Charles Aidman), daughter-in-law (Felicia Farr, aka Mrs. Jack Lemmon), and their infant son, whom Grandpa adores. Lemmon directed his pal Matthau in this film, and look for Lemmon doing a brief cameo as a sleeping bus passenger. Into Kotch's life comes Erica, the babysitter, who is forced to drop out of high school due to an unintended pregnancy, and the two strike up an unorthodox relationship (no, it's not what you're thinking). There is a riotous scene where Kotch delivers the girl's baby in the ladies' room of a gas station, and some "awww" moments throughout the film. One quirk: watch for Kotch to speak German in an Italian restaurant, Spanish in a Swiss restaurant, and French in a Mexican restaurant. Give this one a chance and you'll be rewarded.

    4 out of 5 stars Kotch.......2001-08-20

A small budget film made large by the performances of Deborah Winters(Outstanding) and Walter Matthau. The first 20-30 minutes of the film is the set-up, so if your patient you will be rewarded. The story really takes off when Matthau finds new meaning in his life through Winter's(single mother) pregency. Two different generations find common ground. Must see!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars But what about my ACTING? No! Our RELATIONSHIP! No! My DIRECTING.......2006-01-17

90 percent of the dialogue in this film consists of three words: ACTING, RELATIONSHIP, DIRECTING
    Heroine:"But what about my ACTING?"
Girlfriend:"You only think about ACTING! What about our RELATIONSHIP! Oh No! You're going to start ACTING again."

Audience: Oh no! She is. Make them all stop ACTING.

    Heroine:"But When I'm ACTING I feel alive."
Girlfriend of Actress:"But what about our RELATIONSHIP?"
Jilted husband:"But what about our RELATIONSHIP?"
Cheating wife:"You don't care about our RELATIONSHIP! You just don't have any faith in my DIRECTING?"
    Heroine:"But what about my ACTING?"

And yes, what about the ACTING? And DIRECTING?
This film provides some of the most inept examples of either I have ever been unfortunate enough to witness. The most abysmal scene, however, comes without dialogue. It's the love scene, in which the two women go through every clumsily lit pose in the love scene compendium, arched backs and silhouettes, all set to an atrocious song which goes something like

    "strangeeers....loooooversss."

This film is one of those horrors where you seriously question your own ability to judge. If they didn't know they were making something this bad, does anyone?

5 out of 5 stars Beck's Intentions captures the heart of the moment.......2005-05-04

"I've had that conversation before!" "I feel like she's telling my life story" are just a few of the many positive comments I heard when watching this movie with a group of friends. Beck manages to beautifully capture a simple but honest story about discovering ones sexuality and risking it all to figure out what you want and who you are. The lead actresses are superb without being over the top, and the story is nicely paced. I think most people (particularly women) will enjoy this movie, regardless of their sexuality.
