Astoundingly silly but incredibly popular, Police Academy is the first film in a seemingly endless franchise that takes aim at the men in blue. After a police academy drops all of its entrance requirements, all manner of misfits flood in, hoping to make it onto the force. One of these misfits, a lazy, aimless cadet played by Steve Guttenberg (Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby), was forced to enlist and tries whatever he can to get kicked out. But once he decides to stay, he tries anything and everything to finish his training, even as his drill instructor tries to shove him out. Featuring a wild bunch of strange supporting characters, from a female trainee who speaks below a whisper to a dominatrix instructor to a human sound-effects machine, Police Academy is mindless but fun. --Robert Lane

Police Academy is a fine example of humor taken to the level of ridiculous. The many levels meld nicely together.

5 out of 5 stars classic!.......2007-03-06

Last time I watched this series was when I was a kid. Watching these again felt like the first time watching. This is a must have for Police Academy fans!!

The order was in perfect condition and the movies were great. I had not seen all of the movies before and they were funny.

5 out of 5 stars A great deal........2007-01-23

Absolutley every Police Academy movie is good. Considering the fact that there is seven of them, I dreaded buying them all seperatley. But then I found this, the box set including all seven of them! It is a great deal that you cannot beat.

5 out of 5 stars Laughter never gets old!.......2007-01-09

There are some things that are just funny and Police Academy is always that. It has that silly comedy that is sometimes so dumb you just have to laugh and for the person who loves to laugh, this is perfect for them. There is even a Moscow one that I did not know existed. This set is just great.

With Infernal Affairs, Hong Kong filmmakers Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak have successfully taken a smart script and a great cast, added some stylistic cinematography, and dual-fistedly given a new twist to a formulaic genre. Lau Kin Ming (Andy Lau), a young, loyal gangster, is ordered by his Triad boss Sam (Eric Tsang) to join the police force. While on the inside the young mole can keep a close eye on police activity, ensuring the gang's activities will not be interrupted. Police Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong Chau-Sang) has a similar plan. He takes a bright, ambitious police cadet Yan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and makes him an undercover cop with plans to get him inside the Triads. Years pass and both are now deep into their assigned roles. Undercover cop Yan, more or less living the life of a gangster, is now a member of Boss Sam's group, and "Officer" Lau has all the appearance of a good cop trying to bust up the Triads' drug ring. During a bust that could finally bring down Boss Sam, the moles inadvertently become aware of each other's existence, and each is left wondering who is on the inside. What follows is a unique and exciting twist on the classic cat and mouse chase in which each man is not fighting for his life, but for his anonymity. In addition to its plot twists, what lifts Infernal Affairs above the standard cop story is its subtle exploration of the relative nature of good and evil. Part action, part psychological examination, Infernal Affairs is a sharp and fresh take on the classic crime story, and the inspiration for a 2006 Martin Scorsese remake (The Departed). Not to be missed. --Rob Bracco

Description

An award-winning crime thriller in the intense tradition of HEAT and RESERVOIR DOGS ... critics everywhere have hailed INFERNAL AFFAIRS for its gritty action and international superstars. Chan Wing Yan (Tony Leung -- HERO) is a hard-nosed veteran cop sent undercover to infiltrate the notorious Triad crime ring. An expert at bringing down violent syndicates, Chan thinks it's going to be a routine mission. What he's not prepared for is the discovery that the Triad's boss (Eric Tsang -- THE ACCIDENTAL SPY) has planted a mole (Andy Lau -- THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER) in the police department ... and now Chan is being hunted down. In this battle of wills, only one cop can win!

4 out of 5 stars The best Chinese language film of the last 10 years.......2007-05-12

It is a shame that the translation in subtitles is not optimal and that the dubbed voices lack the emotional qualities of the actors supposedly talking. Cantonese is beautiful to listen to but when this film was dubbed the emotions and nuances were eliminated. The actors in this film did a great job and if you can only understand English you are missing a lot.
That being said I think Hollywood has tried to rip off this movie already once (why not, there are at least 2 sequels in Hong Kong) but did not succeed.
The story is great and you have great actors in the top 4 roles giving good, intense acting jobs. This film is about good and evil and that the difference is only by an individual's perspective. This film is really about perceptions as much as "The Matrix" was, except it shows you both sides of the perspective as equal. Never has such an intellectual movie been done as entertainment or a police / crime story although the alternate ending lessens the actual movie. Check out the alternate ending only to see that Mr. Lau (yes he is one of the stars) chose the correct ending.
One last thing, I think Americans could have used a little more screen time for Kelly Chen (the therapist) so that they could find out about her talent.

Infernal Affairs (Andrew Lau and Siu Fai Mak, 2002)

Hopefully all of you are aware by now that The Departed, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2006, is Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Lau and Mak's Infernal Affairs. I have not yet seen The Departed, and thus can't comment on the similarity between the two movies, but I can say that this one, at least, is a winner through and through.

Our story opens with Sam (The Hitman's Eric Tsang), a mob boss, sending five of his youngest recruits off to police academy to become moles. The brightest star in the bunch is Lau Kin Ming (international superstar Andy Lau, last seen on American screens in House of the Flying Daggers), who quickly rises through the force. What none of the criminals know is that, as Lau was in the academy, the academy was grooming their own mole, Chan Wing Yan (Tony Leung Chu Wai). Both undercover agents are detected at the same time, though no one knows the identity of either, and the two end up hunting each other down.

Yes, it reads like a comedy of errors, but it's anything but. Mak and Lau keep the action white-hot after a few minutes of setup at the beginning. The viewer barely has enough time to breathe. The movie suffers a time or two when extraneous subplots are introduced, none of which actually goes anywhere, but when the directors are focusing on the main plot, it's fireworks from beginning to end. All this is helped by the fact that Lau (the character) and Chan are well-drawn, absorbing characters, and Lau (the actor) and Leung make them into real humans with which the viewer can empathize.

If you're an action movie fan, or if you just want to see what all the fuss was about this year while putting in a little over half the time it would take to watch The Departed, you can't go wrong with Infernal Affairs. ****

5 out of 5 stars Buddist Take on the Departed.......2007-03-09

Great pulse ... I can see how DiCaprio and Scorsese climbed into The Departed ...

4 out of 5 stars Intellectual thriller from Hong Kong, capital of kung pow.......2007-03-01

Say "Cop Thriller from Hong Kong," and most cinemaphiles will smile, recalling some of the best "kung pow," "chop sockey," plain old ultra-action films ever made. This is the "can't-go-over-the-top-enough" cradle of such restrained filmmakers as John Woo ("Hard Boiled," "The Killer," "A Better Tomorrow"). Dazzling action sequences and high body counts are the hallmark of the stereotypical movie in this sub-genre.

"Infernal Affairs" takes all that and stands it on its head. "IA" is a thinking person's thriller, and not for nothing did Martin Scorcese adapt this movie and have it win his first "Best Director" Oscar. Witty and stylish, "IA" has a little something for everyone . . . except mindless violence.

The plot is simple and well-known. The Triads put a mole deep inside the police department, while the cops place a mole deep inside the Triads. Their identities are virtually unknown to anyone outside a couple of key contacts. So what happens when you live for a decade as someone else, and virtually everyone in your life thinks you are your alter ego? Can the undercover cop remain a cop? Can the criminal stay a criminal?

These questions are analyzed in a thoughtful movie, more content to play cat-and-mouse than whack-a-mole. The only thing that keeps "IA" from five-star status are two sub-plots involving two women and the undercover cop - one starts to go downstream and never goes anywhere, while the other starts in mid-stream and stops immediately. They both feel as if the filmmakers thought they had to get some female faces into the movie, but were stymied as to how to do it. A sub-plot involving the criminal and his wife is better handled.

This is not to say that "IA" is a bad or even a merely good film. It is excellent, but with all the Oscar rage over Scorcese's "The Departed," several writers are pumping this one up just a bit too much. But it is a must see for anyone looking for a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat night at the movies.

5 out of 5 stars I like the original movie better:.......2007-03-01

After I enjoyed Martin Scorcese's "The Departed", I decided to watch the film that inspired the celebrated director to re-make it and to move the action from Hong Kong to Boston, MA, USA. I must say that I liked the original movie better: 50 minutes shorter than Scorcese's magnificent remake, "Infernal Affairs" is tighter, faster, more compelling and tells the same story better. It does not have a grand acting Jack Nicholson who basically plays Daryl Van Horne with the attitude and "Infernal Affairs"' characters don't talk and don't curse as much as they do in "The Departed" but the Hong Kong's movie only benefits from it. As much as I admire Leonardo DiCaprio as Bill Castigan, Tony Leung (Yan) in his role is simply unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Police Academy (20th Anniversary Special Edition) ~ G.W. Bailey.......2006-05-14

Police Academy (20th Anniversary Special Edition)~ G.W. Bailey is the only good movie of them all. Guttenberg plays an amazing role, and the script is not as paper thinn as the rest of the sequells. This makes the rest of movies look look the winner of the nobel prize. The dialogue is not as horrid as the later sequells either but is kind of well developed. I love tackleberry the Vietnam craze and all the other steroetypical charachters in this movie. I also love the blue eyester bar scene. The rest of the movie is filled with typical 80's stereotypical view of society which was normal at the time. It is also a time capsule for the music (Frankie Goes to Hollywood is played in one scene), the fashion (the tacky clothes) and everything else that was like "in fashion" during the 80's. Highly recommended indeed.

There was nothing at Blockbuster Video. All the new ones were gone. The low-budgets collect dust. Even Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) was gone. So I mosied on over to comedy to find "The Four Seasons" (1981) with Carol Burnett, Alan Alda, Sandy Dennis, Rita Moreno. They never even heard of it. What I did find was all seven "Police Academy" movies and to make it more exciting, they were all on DVD.
Okay, I need to relieve some tension. I'll watch rookie cops be stupid. Besides, Steve Guttenberg and Marion Ramsey are funny and that guy from the M*A*S*H tv series is in it too.
The first film includes the cast of 11 rookies: Steve Guttenberg, Kim cattrall (Porky's {1981], Sex In The City tv series), Bubba Smith, Andrew Rubin, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Bruce Mahler ("Fridays" tv shows), Scott Thopson, Brant Van Hoffman, Marion Ramsey and Donovan Scott.
They all must get through the Police Academy and obey the orders of G.W. Bailey (M*A*S*H tv series) and Leslie Easterbrook (Laverne & Shirley tv series). To add to the comic relief, George Gaynes, Debralee Scott, Ted Ross (The Wiz), Gary Farmer (Powow Highway [1989]) and Georgina Spelvin (the age-over-40 adults know what other movies she has done).
Can these bubbleheads ever pass the Academy? They have made 7 films.
DVD includes a 30-minute featurette, "Behind Acadmey Doors: Secret Files Revealed"., theatrical trailer and audio commentary for this 20th Anniversary edition.

A much inferior sequel to the first hit film, Police Academy 2 nevertheless manages to keep a free-spirited, juvenile tone. Steve Guttenberg (Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby) returns as the charming goof-off, now graduated from the academy. He and the usual batch of misfits are let loose on the streets as rookie cops, wreaking havoc everywhere they go as they do battle with terrorists threatening the city. Some choice moments from the likes of Michael Winslow, as the man whose voice can imitate any sound, barely compensate for this being a pale imitation of the original movie. --Robert Lane

5 out of 5 stars Hesseman and Goldwaitt.......2006-11-10

This movie is outstanding for two reasons. 1. Howard Hessemen is in it. 2. Bobcatt Goldwaitt is in it. These two men are astonishing performers of acting. They are breathtakingly brilliant. Bobcatt should have won an Oscar for his chilling performance as ZED. Hessemen was incredible as well as the Police Captain. He should have won an Oscar too. Jeez, Hollywood, what were you thinking passing up these fine gentlemen at the Academy Awards? I loved the scene where Bobcatt and his punk buddies trash the Supermarket. I also thought Hessemen was great when he tried to attack the punks by himself and they painted him with graffiti. Unbelievable! Steve Guttenberg was in it too, but stunk at acting. The rest of the cast was pathetic.

4 out of 5 stars "O-eight hundred hours. Time to deploy for school.".......2005-06-26

Still a funny film after all these years, though it would never get a PG rating nowadays! Steve Guttenberg and his fellow cadets from the original "Police Academy" must help Howard Hesseman ("WKRP In Cinncinnatti", "Head Of The Class") take back the streets in this funny follow-up to the original. Not all of the original cadets make it into the sequel, but it does introduce some new characters, such as Mahoney's sloppy partner "Schtulman" (I don't remember if he was in any of the subsequent films, but if he wasn't, he should've been). The film also introduces Bobcat Goldthwait, one of my all-time favorite comedians, as "Zed", the gang leader.

The film *is* a bit dated at times (check out Guttenberg driving around the beach on an ATV with a sweater tied around his neck), but for the most part it's still an effective comedy. Crude, but very funny.

I liked the Police Academy movies and I agree with the reviewers who wrote that they though the first four Police Academy movies are the best. This movie was okay and had some amusing scenes but suffered from the loss of Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney.

5 out of 5 stars Academy gang goes to Miami Beach for fun........2005-02-24

There is no Steve Guttenberg and the original and returning list of cast members is getting shorter.

Original cast members returning: Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, G.W. Bailey, George Gaynes, George R. Robertson.

Also returning is: Lance Kinsey and Tab Thacker.

The Academy gang gets to go to Miami Beach to honor Cmndt. Eric Lassard, but the bad news is Lassard is being told to retire. The Academy gang doesn't want that to happen so they have a few plans inside their badge. So does three henchman.

Also in the cast: Rene Auberjunois, Jerry Lazarus, Archie Hahn, Matt McCoy, James Hampton and Nelson Oramas.

The next film in the series: Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989).

2 out of 5 stars one of the weaker offerings in the Police Academy series.......2004-06-30

A film by Alan Myerson

"Police Academy 5" is a disappointment. Sure, it is a Police Academy movie, so we know it is light slapstick humor, but this one is not nearly as good as any of the previous Police Academy movies. This fifth film is subtitled "Assignment Miami Beach" and this means that some of our favorite officers will be returning and heading south to Florida.

I'll try to sum this up as succinctly as possible, as the plot to this movie isn't terribly important (or well done, for that matter). Plot point 1: Captain Harris (G.W. Bailey) is after the job of Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes). Lassard has reached the mandatory retirement age, and Harris is going to make sure that Lassard retires. Meanwhile, Lassard is headed down to Florida to receive the award of "Police Officer of the Decade", and he wants his favorite recruits (now officers) to come with him. This brings Hightower (Bubba Smith), Tackleberry (David Graf), Jones (Michael Winslow), Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook) and the soft-voiced Hooks (Marion Ramsey) to Florida. Meanwhile, there is a robbery of a stash of diamonds from a museum (it seems), and due to a mix up at the airport, Lassard unknowingly switches bags with the thief. The thief will stop at nothing to get the diamonds back. Hilarity is supposed to ensue.

Unfortunately, hilarity does not ensue. For a fan of the Police Academy movies, the fifth installment is somewhat cute and friendly and easy going (perfect for kids, really), but it is lacking some of the heart and humor of the earlier films in the series. This one only has a PG rating, compared to the R of the first film, so it is plain that this has turned into a family friendly series. Part of the problem with this movie is the lack of Officer Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), who left the series after the fourth movie. While these have always been ensemble movies, Mahoney has been something of the heart and the closest thing to a "main character" that the Police Academy movies had. He is replaced by Lassard's nephew, Nick Lassard (Matt McCoy). Nick Lassard is a police officer in Miami and, like Mahoney, is a friendly, smart-aleck, womanizer. He just isn't as likeable as Mahoney was (as hard as McCoy tries), and feels like a poor replacement for Mahoney (who isn't even mentioned in the movie). Nick has a love interest, also a cop, in Kate (Janet Jones, better known as Wayne Gretzky's wife).

Overall, "Police Academy 5" feels flat, and much less funny than the earlier (though still silly) Police Academy movies. It may be cheap entertainment, but it's just not well made cheap entertainment.

-Joe Sherry

4 out of 5 stars The Metropolitan Police Academy comes to Florida.......2004-05-22

The Metropolitan Police Academy comes to Florida in this film. There's a new prankster there,Commandant Eric Lassard's(George Gaynes) nephew Nick(Matt McCoy),who's a Miami Beach cop. I believe Steve Guttenberg chose to film "Three Men And A Baby" instead of doing this sequel. This film has a new star character,Sgt. Moses Hightower(Bubba Smith). Captain Harris(G.W. Bailey) and Lt. Proctor(Lance Kinsey) discover overlooked files late one evening regarding Eric's tenure with the MPA. Eric was slightly over the mandatory retirement age, saddening his colleagues. Eric himself is half-happy because he's been nominated for a Police Officer Of The Decade award at a ceremony in Miami Beach. Eric's retirement is announced following graduation of the MPA's Class of 1988. So Harris does all he can to succeed Eric. Eric takes his "band of misfits",as Harris would call them,to Miami Beach, including new graduate Thomas "House" Conklin, who was a member of the short-lived Citizens On Patrol team in the previous sequel. Harris and Proctor fly to MB as well, separate from Eric ad his gang. Harris and Proctor take a private plane. At the airport upon arriving, the first thing Eric sees is his nephew apprehending a wallet thief. One of Nick's first pranks is,on the beach,he borrows a friend's sunblock and writes the word 'dork' on a sunbathing Harris' bare chest. Harris arises, only to be met with hysterical laughter and comments from other beach patrons. Harris tells the mayor,"I don't mean to insult your city, but the people here are very rude and hostile.". The mayor replies,"I'm sorry to hear that,Captain Dork!". Now for the crime:a trio of thieves break into a museum and remove rare diamonds from a showcase. The thieves kidnap Eric, and later Harris, taking them both on a boat that the thieves are about to sink with Eric and Harris in it. Eric would later knock out one of the thieves himself, recovering the stones. Also,in the very same water,a crocodile on the loose is about to kill Harris, loose in the water. Hightower wrestles with the creature and rescues Harris. The thieves have been apprehended, the MPA members are back home with Nick in tow,and each officer is awarded a medal of satisfactory work from the city of Miami. Hightower receives another medal, this one for his bravery, saving Harris' life and is also promoted to lieutenant. Then, after Eric delivers his nearly farewell speech,Commissioner Henry Hurst announces by popular demand that Eric stay at the MPA.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Guttenberg is in training to be a cop........2005-02-23

This quite a great deal on these films on disc so the downside is that it is doublesided but than it's also a good thing, both films are in widescreen so that great of warners brothers to do that. if you are police academy fan then this kinda of deal to get two films for such a low price. the only reason i give four stars is the transfer of picture on both films looks a little dark maybe it the dvd player i'm using oh well good deal anyway, this also comes with special features one on each side.

2 out of 5 stars Police Academy 3 - Back in Training ~ Steve Guttenberg.......2006-06-07

Police Academy 3 - Back in Training~ Steve Guttenberg is a mediocre sequel in the seemingly endless Police Academy series. The acting is not nearly on the same level as in the first movie (except for Bob Goldthwait whom is awesome) and the script is a real bottom feeder and to think they made another 4 movies. Just that makes my head ache big time. All the jokes that were in the movie, the musical mouth is in this movie as well and that is not a good thing. Like we once more get to see the inside of the classic blue oyster bar. The movie is filled with steerotypical charchters, the japanse exchange officer whom speaks horrible "Enrish" and is good at karate, the violent italian american and many others that florished in the movies during the 80's. I am not a fan of pc but this is almost crossing the line of like good taste. Recommended if you are a huge fan of the police academy series otherwise avoid this mediocre movie. It is not a real "stinker" but I can still not give it more then 2 out of 5 stars.

2 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE COMEDY APPEALING MOSTLY TO CHILDREN........2004-08-13

You think that the cast of "The Lord Of The Rings" had a tough time shooting the trilogy almost 2 years? Think again, because for some mysterious reason, the childish "Police Academy" series released a movie year after year, from 1984 to 1989, that's right, one of this stinking turkeys every year. Well, to be honest, I loved this movies...when I was 8 years old, but time flies fast, and things change.

"Police Academy 3: Back In Training" is a collection of racial stereotypes, cliched characters, unfunny jokes, one dimensional performances and bad direction. Most of the actors could only get a job in the "Police Academy" series, and that is mostly their fault, because if they had chosen different roles, they could still be acting today in movies...I guess.

Perhaps I'm being unfair, "Police Academy 3: Back In Training" is not that bad...to see only once. "Police Academy 3: Back In Training" is not that bad...if you are a kid. "Police Academy 3: Back In Training" is not that bad...if you think Adam Sandler is a funny guy.

3 out of 5 stars This movie tried so hard to be funny, but it still failed at so many levels.......2006-10-23

I really enjoyed the Police Academy movies when they came out in the eighties. The cast was fantastic because everyone had their own unique personalities. But, I really think that they should have stopped making these sequels after Police Academy Three: Back in Training, because all the humor started to really be repetitive and boring. That's too bad too because this movie "Police Acamedy 4: Citizens on Patrol, really did gather together quite an impressive cast of stars. Most of the original cast, plus we got Sharon Stone, David Spade, Brian Backer (from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"), and a cast of professional skateboarders, and we got a wonderful display of hot air balloons, and classic antique two passenger airplanes. It seems like it worked with a huge budget, but this comedy was so unfunny, I really don't know if I can ever sit through it again. I can certainly see why Steve Guttenberg (Mahoney) decided to not come back and participate in the three following (destined to fail) follow-up films of more Police Academy.

I bought the box set of all seven Police Academy films and quickly got rid of the last three after I watched them. They were so bad. Easily forgettable stories with an absolutely unfunny script. The only reason that I kept this Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, is because it has an actress that I fell in love with the first time I saw her. Corrine Bohrer, who plays Laura, and who has a strange attraction to Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait) in the film. When I saw her thick head of blonde hair flopping around, I was mesmerized. Since then, I've learned that Corrine Bohrer ended up being more of a cast extra on regular TV. That's too bad because she is so gorgeous.

Anyway, I'll keep this fourth Police Academy DVD only because of Corrine Bohrer, but I still love the first three because the humor was still fresh and new, and they actually had tangible stories that kept me interested.

3 out of 5 stars This had a lot of potential.......2006-08-19

Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol isn't a bad film; it's just uneven and underdeveloped. And even though none of the previous three films were masterpieces, exactly--although for my money, Police Academy 2 comes pretty close to that designation--Police Academy 4 is something of a letdown in context.

I just finished writing my review for Death Wish 3 (1985). In that review, I also referenced Aliens (1986). I mention this here because writer Gene Quintano and director Jim Drake take a similar approach to those films in breaking the Police Academy template--they broaden the character scope, introducing a virtual army of protagonists. That move is the main source of the problems here, but it's also the main source of a mostly untapped potential for a great film.

The idea is that Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) is initiating a program to train citizens in basic police skills and procedures, so that they can help crack down on crime. As just a trivial example of how Police Academy 4 is underdeveloped, the program is "Citizens on Patrol", so that the acronym is C.O.P.--you can't get a much thinner pun than that.

Of course, there are bigger problems. Quintano and Drake fill some of their time with 1980s trends--like a long skateboarding scene (featuring a very young David Spade and skateboarding by an just as young Tony Hawk). There's some good skateboarding there, but it doesn't exactly fit a Police Academy film. Much of the first hour is filled with jokes based around core Police Academy characters' personalities, as in the previous three films, but whereas the material was fresh if underdeveloped in Police Academy 1, quick-witted and breakneck-paced in Police Academy 2, and more sequentially gag-oriented and slightly hit and miss in Police Academy 3, here it is too often a bit flat and stale. There are some funny bits, of course, but in light of the multilayered quick delivery and nonstop gags of some previous films, settling in as a rehashing underachiever on this end isn't going to entail success.

Mixed in with this standard material is the introduction of the C.O.P. program and its characters. Many of the new characters are good, but Drake is comfortable to let the film be a slow cooker, far too slow for where he eventually goes with it. While it's slow cooking, he treats the C.O.P. characters as an expanded core Police Academy cast--which is okay, because they all have their quirks just like Mahoney, Hightower, Tackleberry et al do, and those need to be established.

But here's the problem. In the final 20 - 30 minutes of the film, Drake does something very different for a Police Academy film and clever for this plot. He breaks the settings wide open, sets all his characters in chaotic motion, and achieves a madcap misadventure feel ala It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963). What a great idea! But why did it take almost an hour to get there in a film that's just over 80 minutes long? The C.O.P. program and the new characters should have been introduced in 20 - 25 minutes tops, and the madcap misadventure stuff should have been developed far more so that it built momentum over the next 70 or 80 minutes. That would have made this an excellent film instead of a cursorily enjoyable one, because the last 25 minutes are good, with quite a few flashes of greatness.

2 out of 5 stars Police Academy 4 - Citizens on Patrol ~ Steve Guttenberg.......2006-06-10

This series, Police Academy 4 - Citizens on Patrol~ Steve Guttenberg, was getting worst and worst. The acting is like nowhere close to the first movie. This movie is about as filled steerotypes as ever. The fighting Italian family, the obligatory Blue Oyster Bar. Here we get to see a young David Spade in his first movie and he was the lucky winner to be included in this mediocre junk. This is also Steve Guttenbergs last movie playing the role as Mahoney and I do not blame him for wanting out. The jokes are the same as in the first movie. The script is like a joke compared to the first movie and the citizens on patrol idea was just stupid. The music is terrible and sounds like the cheapest 80's music that they could possibly find. This movie should only be seen by Police Academy diehards. Otherwise this sequell could like easily be avoided and this is getting close to being a turkey.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yes!.......2006-01-04

Ideal for people who liked Police Academy 1,2 and 3, people who liked Police Academy 1 and 2, didn't like Police Academy 3 but are hoping for a return to form, or people who didn't like Police Academy 1 or 3 but liked Police Academy 2 so much they are willing to give the series another chance. Not recommended for people who didn't like Police Academy 1,2 or 3.

5 out of 5 stars "He was like scared..he was flinchin'!....".......2005-11-18

Police Academy was a hugely sucessful film franchise throughout the majority of the 1980s and Citizens On Patrol is arguably the best of the lot. Returning characters include Sgt Carey Mahoney, Hightower, Hooks, Jones, Callahan, Tackleberry and two recruits from the previous picture, Sweetchuck and Zed. The story of Commandant Lassard wanting to implement a new citizen outreach program with the usual opposition from Captain Harris is worthy of another sequel but it is Zed who steals the thunder of the other cast members and takes the spotlight to new heights of hilarium. This is what The Mod Squad wanted to be. Chan (Eric Tsang), a cop on the fringe of the force, assembles a team of loose-cannon cadets--the Gen-X Cops--to infiltrate the mobs of Hong Kong, and they find a stolen shipment of explosive rocket fuel. Dressed in skin-tight leather and vinyl, hip to the point of being ridiculous, our heroes (named Jack, Alien, and Match) have to fight not only ultraviolent criminals but also hostile factions within the police as they track down a supercool Japanese gangster with no fear of death. The clichés fly fast and thick, and the plot is at times incomprehensible, but the action is pretty much nonstop. A shootout in a surfboard factory is particularly spectacular but is only one of several rapidly edited, stunt-filled sequences. The dubbing is better than usual (though subtitles would still be preferable), and there's some unfortunate homophobia, but the actors are all good-looking, the rock soundtrack is loud, the colors are bright, and the attitude is intense. Gen-X Cops even features a cameo by Jackie Chan, who's somehow involved with presenting the film. A slick, silly, and very entertaining movie. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-05-01

There's action, suspense, and it's even sad when the Lieutenant dies, more like bittersweet. I have to watch this movie in the English Dub because I can't follow the subtitles that fast. It's a good movie, and though the kid cop thing has been done and done again, this movie is enjoyable. And Tohru Nakamura as the bad guy...fan me please... The characters are quickly developed, the scripting, however close to the original is well done, and the dialogue sometimes kills me. I rented this movie, and then bought it I liked it so much. i have yet to find anyone who really hates this movie. Most of my friends who have watched it or borrowed it give it 3 or 4 stars. All in all, it's worth renting to see at least once.

5 out of 5 stars All of Hong Kongs best in one Great Movie.......2005-10-10

I watched this one a few years back and still own it on DVD along with the sequel Gen Y Cops.

I primarily bought this as Stephen Fung and Nicholas Tse were in it after seeing them together in the film 2002. I then saw this movie of them together and decided to buy Gen x Cops on DVD.

This is a fun movie to watch and there is really no need for subtitles half the movie is in English anyway. I know most of it is in Cantonese, a little Japanese, but the majority is English.

The cast line is excellent with most of the big stars in hong kong securing fantastic characters within the story, stars such as , Toru Nakamura, Francis Ng, Sam Lee, Daniel Wu, Eric Tsang and Terrence Yin

If you love Hong Kong action movies with lots of fight sequences then you will love this movie as it has it all. Comedy, a little romance and the dumb witty Tsang at his best. Why does he always get cast as the stereotypical clown I wonder. But needless to say he plays it well.

Tse and Fung are like the hong kong version of Ant and Dec, they always seem to pop up in the same movie. I can name at least 8. But these 2 are meant to be together they make a fantastic acting pair.

They play a pair of rookie cops who team up with the annoying Sam Lee and Grace Yip to fight a crime organization by any means possible.

The antics and the obstacles they come across are both laughable and serious.

One scene sticks in my head from the entire movie is a scene when Sam Lee is being given wording from Grace Yip in order to make conversation in Japanese to distract the Japanese guard resulting in insulting the Guards mother, poor Lee is beaten thus providing the distraction they need, Now that was funny.

The whole movie brings about the aspect that not all Hong Kong movies are all about Kicking butt in the old fashioned way of Martial Arts movies. Hong kong can do serious comedies too you know, and this movie provides it.

If you are looking for a laugh this will bring a tear to your eye in a laughable way.

Its fun to watch and well worth checking out more films by Tse and Fung.

I'd give this movie a rating of 9 out of Ten for comedy

10 out of 10 for the acting talents from Nicholas Tse, Stephen Fung and Torú Nakamura

1 out of 5 stars Worst HK movie I have seen this year.......2005-01-17

I rented this on blockbuster and this has got to be the WORST movie I have seen all of 2005. Watching this movie reminded me of why I should stay away from Hong Kong movies. Eric Tsang Chi-wai reminds me why I should hate the idiot, despite his good acting on Infernal Affairs. The guy is a moron and this movie is moronic.

NOTHING makes sense whatsoever and everything looks staged and fake. I like action but this movie was just plain DUMB because the dialogue was retarded and nothing was believable.

Please save your money and watch something else instead.

3 out of 5 stars Routine blockbuster showcases new HK talent.......2004-07-08

GEN-X COPS (Hong Kong - 1999): Jackie Chan co-produced this routine blockbuster as a showcase for some of Hong Kong's hottest new teen stars, including Nicholas Tse Ting-fung, Stephen Fung Tak-lun, Daniel Wu Yin-cho and comic relief Sam Lee Chan-sam. The convoluted storyline posits Tse, Fung and Lee as a trio of rebellious young cops, recruited as undercover agents by police commander Eric Tsang Chi-wai to investigate the shady business dealings between low-level Triad underling Wu and a Japanese crime lord (Toru Nakamura) who has seized a shipment of deadly explosives for nefarious purposes, prompting a sequence of betrayals and counter-betrayals amongst members of the opposing criminal factions, until events reach an explosive climax during a showdown at the newly-opened Hong Kong Convention Center.

Veteran director Benny Chan Muk-sing (A MOMENT OF ROMANCE, NEW POLICE STORY) marshals proceedings into a cohesive whole, though the movie fizzles badly after a dynamic opening sequence before rallying again somewhere around the halfway mark. The action scenes are staged and executed with all the breathless abandon one expects from HK cinema, but many of them unfold so quickly, it's often difficult to know who's doing what to whom, or even why, and crucial plot points are sometimes lost along the way. Few of the actors emerge with any credit, though Nakamura is admirably solemn as an English-speaking Japanese villain who clings to old-fashioned notions of truth and righteousness in a world where such virtues no longer have currency. The young leads are OK (Wu's transition from beleaguered second-in-command to ruthless hard man is surprisingly convincing), while Tsang spends much of his screen time trading insults with his younger, slicker police counterpart (Moses Chan Ho). Stand-out set-pieces include a breathtaking skydive from the roof of a high-rise building, and the climactic scenes at the Hong Kong Convention Center which utilize ambitious visual effects supervised by a US effects team, headed by Oscar-winner Joe Viskocil (INDEPENDENCE DAY, APOLLO 13). Sensitive viewers may be irritated by some xenophobic comments directed toward the Japanese villains, and there's a couple of dialogue exchanges which play directly to bigoted attitudes about gay men, but the offence is fleeting, if unnecessary. Ultimately, this big budget fluff - designed to compete with a flood of Hollywood blockbusters dominating the HK box-office - amounts to little more than a feel-good fantasy thriller, as slick and hollow as the very films it seeks to emulate. A huge success on its home turf, the film spawned an inevitable sequel, GEN-Y COPS (2000). Original title: DAK GING SAN YAN LUI (Cantonese) or TE JING XIN REN LEI (Mandarin).

Columbia TriStar's DVD offers a fine representation of the original film, and there's a generous helping of extras, including trailers, outtakes and a US-style 'Making of' which sells the film as a major blockbuster. Sound and picture quality is excellent. Major irritation: For some unfathomable reason, the disc continues to provide English subtitles during the lengthy English-language sequences in the original Cantonese version of the film.

4 out of 5 stars a fun action flick.......2003-09-26

"Gen X Cops" isn't quite your average Hong Kong action movie, adopting instead the look of a low budget Hollywood summer flick. A trio of young cops with an attitude tail gangsters all while looking pretty damn cool at it. Jack (Nic Tse), Match (Stephen Fung), and Alien (alien-like Sam Lee) find themselves kicked out of police academy only to be picked up by Officer Chan (Eric Tsang), himself on the outs with his unsympathetic superiors. Chan wants their help on a dangerous undercover mission, one involving gang bosses, gang betrayals, and rocket fuel (??) They're joined by Y2K (Grace Yip) whose sole purpose it seems is to be the tough girl of the group. Everyone's got a little something to prove and set out to get a little respect. Balletic gunfights, questionable English, and the explosion of a Hong Kong landmark ensue.

The formulaic plot satisfies for the most part and makes sense in that action movie sort of way. Nothing is too over-the-top, equaling harmless fun for all. Clearly no one is taking themselves too seriously, and director Benny Chan was smart in throwing in a healthy dose of humor. The end result is a slick, satisfying 1 1/2 hour reality break.

The cast consists mostly of young talents but the older actors turn in some scene stealing performances as well. Francis Ng, who owns every role he takes, stands out as gang boss Lok. He possesses an intensity that keeps his character believable without giving into parody. (Beware Jackie Chan fans; he produced the movie and only appears for a one minute cameo at the end.)

The DVD extras won't disappoint either. In addition to the Coming Attractions, the Special Features include cast and credit info, a production diary, a film magic sequence exhibiting storyboards and special effects, a Making Of, additional footage, and trailers and TV spots. There are Cantonese and Mandarin language tracks with traditional, simplified, and English subtitles. There is also a great in-depth commentary (w/ subtitles) from the cast and crew. Unfortunately some of the special features do not have subtitles, though you won't miss much. Another drawback is the overall sound quality of the Cantonese track, which is uneven at best.
