Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Aidan Quinn plays a man so aggrieved by his misfortunes that he vows to break each of God's Ten Commandments in revenge. But even that act of profound defiance doesn't quite work out the way he planned, and the character undergoes a mythic--some would say biblical--experience of a different kind. Quinn is fine, as is Anthony LaPaglia as his friend and Courteney Cox as a love interest. But the heavily stylized film by Daniel Taplitz makes puffery of the drama, and the atmosphere is more silly than smart. --Tom Keogh

Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh
Product Description
For sheer pageantry and spectacle, few motion pictures can claim to equal the splendor of Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 remake of his epic The Ten Commandments. Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture, this version tells the story of the life of Moses (Charlton Heston), once favored in the Pharaoh's (Yul Brynner) household, who turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom. With a rare on-screen introduction by Cecil B. DeMille himself, this unforgettable movie experience is enhanced by a Dolby surround stereo soundtrack.

Embarassing script.......2007-07-02
The music and cinematic elements are superb.
The dialogue is often beyond belief and laughable. Pretentious. I have played excerpts for the current generation and they roll on the floor in laughter.
I agree also with some here that many assume some accuracy here...particularly after the rolling of credits at the start of the film which is intended to portray historical research.
There is so much invention in costume, dialogue, and acting that any sense of realism is lost. This is not a story about Christianity....and neither was Ben Hur.
The Ten Commandments (1956).......2007-06-27
Remaking a tale he had previously filmed in 1923, DeMille achieved a career high point with this humongous, star-studded epic--sadly to be his last production. Certain sequences--the parting of the Red Sea, the climb up Mt. Sinai to receive the stone tablets, the orgiastic worship of the golden calf--are some of the most indelible and majestic in film history. Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, and Yvonne De Carlo provide excellent support to Heston, who chews on the role of the hoary, self-righteous prophet, especially in his confrontation with Brynner's feckless Rameses. Only DeMille could make a Bible epic this visually robust and brashly entertaining.
Excelelnt silent and talking movies on this collection.......2007-06-25
Charlton Heston is certainly one of the all-time larger-than-life acting greats and he shows it here the way he admirably tackles the role of Moses from rich desired youth to seasoned, religious pious elderly Hebrew leader. Good support he gets from Yul Brynner (as Rameses!), Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson and Yvonne DeCarlo! The authentic Egyptian locations courtesy of talented director Cecile B. DeMille enhance this powerful, very important Biblical story. See my amapedia below for my review of the '23 film (also by DeMille!).
Every Home Should Have This!.......2007-05-31
I was so impressed when I received this product. Not only is it beautifully packaged, but both DVDs are excellent quality. It is interesting to see the black and white version, then see the color version. Both are extremely well directed and acted. The color version, of course, is my favorite. Charleton Heston gives a superb performance, but Yul Brynner is absolutely the best actor of all time. This is a must have for all homes!

When an oracle prophesizes that a child will become Prince of Egypt, a time of danger approaches the kingdom. The Egyptian Pharaoh (Paul Rhys) orders the massacre of all newborn males. But one child, Moses - the son of a Hebrew slave - escapes certain death when he is set adrift on the Nile. As years pass, he is raised in a royal Egyptian household and, with no memory of his family, rises to the stature of prince. Upon discovery of his true heritage, and inspired by a fiery message from God, Moses (Dougray Scott) embarks upon a noble and desperate fight to reclaim his destiny as the leader and liberator of the Hebrew people.

Some Deviations From the Biblical Story, but GOOD anyway.........2007-05-20
I have a substantial film collection, including a small, but growing
collection of movies that pertain to religion. This movie is not a video version of the Book of Exodus, Dougray Scott is not Charleton Heston, and
there are some interesting deviations from the Bible in this miniseries
called the Ten Commandments. Still, I enjoyed it. I am a Christian and a
Roman Catholic. I think I'm fairly devout, but who is keeping score?
I found myself actually GLAD this wasn't an attempt to remake
DeMille or TBS...the special effects for TV were pretty interesting.
Some interesting questions came to mind for me on my spiritual journey
as i viewed the film. I appreciated that. If I wanted a video version of the Bible, I'd look elsewhere. I don't think any harm was done by some license taken by the director and screen writers with the story.
I have always thoughtof Moses as much more complex then Heston or even Kingsley played him. He is more the prophet here, even tortured inside and we see him struggle, which a person does when he is called by God.
There is a parallel being depicted of Moses and Christ which is compelling for me, anyway...Pershaps offensive to others. I liked that.
The film seemed to explore many questions, and my only complaint was that it was too short...even "hurried" at the end. There is so much that happenned after the Golden Calf...yet we jump from there to Moses
having to view the Promised Land from a mountain...Silly.
It's not enough of a flaw not to recommend it anyway, so long as you
don't mind anything that doesn't "literally" depict a book of the Bible.
Some reviewing preceding me seemed offended by that.I don't think anyone will or has watched it and lost their faith or gone to hell.
How do we really know what Moses was like as a person or what he went through inside. The movie doesn't claim to be totally factual or pretend to be any more than Demille.
I enjoy Dougray Scott's work so i might be biased.

The Ten Commandments for teaching Religion.......2007-05-13
I teach grade 7 and 8 religion in a Catholic school. I liked using this movie because it really shows the difficulties faced by the Hebrews AFTER they had crossed the Red Sea. That was only the beginning - they had to re-learn how to live as a free people. The video shows why it became necessary to live by rules - the Ten Commandments - and what happens when you don't. I was never overly fond of the Charlton Heston version (too Hollywood) and Prince of Egypt, which I also use, glosses over a lot of the harsh realities. This one is the best!
Far from the Torah - Far from truth.......2007-04-04
This passover I thought it would be nice to rent "The Ten Commandments". Unfortunately the rental place only had this piece of drek available. This movie is totally off the mark from the epic story of Exodus as related in the Torah. It seems like a goyisha attempt at making the Israelites look bad. Moshe Rabbeinu was the most humble prophet who spoke directly to Hashem. The portrayal as a maniacal bumbler did not do justice to Moshe at all. Several of the scenes deviated from the Torah including the portions of Yisro and the story of the Golden Calf. It would have been considerate for the screenwriters to have at least consulted a half-way Torah knowledgeable Rabbi about these issues before it tarnished the image of the greatest prophet ever known.
I dont recommend this movie to anyone, please steer clear of this trash. It only desecrates the name of the L-rd and leads people astray.
Mediocre [2.5 stars].......2007-04-03
The acting's mediocre. The casting was fair to poor. Why can't biblical figures be played by middle-easterners rather than Brits? This baffles me.
The special effects -- the reason why I rented this movie instead of Heston's classic -- are good but nothing stellar. They could have been much much better.
There are elements of this movie that make it worthwhile. So few movie adaptations of Bible stories turn out particularly well. This one does a nice job of showing the misery of the Hebrews while in bondage and also of frustration and torment of "wandering" in the "wilderness" for decades. Short of that, this movie's typical of most biblical films, i.e. it's rather bland.
Non-Biblical / Non-Scriptural Message.......2007-03-09
"Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine" "Test all things: hold fast what is good." (1Tim4:16 & 2Thess5:21)
Unfourtunantely this is yet another Non-Biblical movie "about the Bible". It simply takes a basic outline of the Biblical story and slaps an entirely different message into it. I was appalled at how faithless, rebelious and unbelieving Moses, Aaron and Miriam were portrayed. Moses is sadly made out to be an arrogant, tempermental, self-willed and hypocritical man who continually displays unbelief and brazen defiance against God Almighty. He acts as though he were on equal ground with God and had every right and desire to argue against Him. As though God were a mere man and had no higher understanding or substancial authority. This is far from the Biblical Moses who was a humble and meek man who feared God and was obedient to His command - a righteous man, full of faith. It is not possible that the things that come out of this movie Moses' mouth would ever had exited the mouth of the real/Biblical Moses. Thankfully it is not in the nature of a Spirit filled, Bible Believing Christian to think or act as these characters do. If you know and love the Gospel of Jesus Christ, this movie will not (and can not) refresh the Spirit within you.
Better to watch Cecil B DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" with Charlton Heston - it may add plenty of 'fill in the detail' scenes which are not Biblically historical but it is doctrinally unoffending and overall a good and fun Bible movie. (if there are any serious doctrinal errors in it I do not recall them at present)

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped" (2Timothy3:16-17) "If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud knowing nothing" (1Timothy 6:3)

10 commandments.......2007-05-30
the color was clear and the contrast was very good. The story was excellent and was presented well . Very entertaining.

Val Kilmer stars as Moses in The Ten Commandments--The Musical, an almost entirely sung stage adaptation of the biblical book of Exodus, captured on video from a production in Los Angeles. This is one of those profoundly misconceived ideas that self-destructs before your very eyes: From the moment Moses' mother Yokebed places an obvious rubber doll into a video projection of flowing water, you know that every step of this production will fall laughably short of its ambitions. The score is like an interminable 1980s power ballad; the choreography amounts to little more than generic leaps and erotic floundering; the awkward lyrics include such gems as "Metaphysics and religion, philosophy and love/A prince has got to know some things about all of the above"; and the actors deliver the insanely exuberant performances that only come from musical theater kids who think they're finally getting their big break. The story's moments of spectacle--the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea--are depicted by cheesy computer graphics projected on a giant screen behind the stage. Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang , Heat) is the only actor (aside from the French-accented Pharoah) with chest hair; was that in his contract, or was he too lazy to shave? Egyptian glitz and Jewish tatters are equally campy (just wait for the orgiastic Golden Calf scene!). This is for those who savor oblivious badness. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Through the magic of musical theatre, one of the world's greatest stories has been reborn. With a stunning new vision, The Ten Commandments: The Musical brings to life the gripping tale of two brothers, Moses and Ramses. United by love, divided by destiny, they lead their two nations in an epic struggle between slavery and liberty. The Hebrews were slaves in Egypt 3,300 years ago. When Moses, a Hebrew baby raised as a brother to the Egyptian prince, learned of his true origins, he was thrust into a new life, leading his people to freedom. But liberty was not enough. To survive and thrive, they had to abide by the rules of their God, The Ten Commandments. The story that has inspired billions of people now becomes a call to the world for peace, love and brotherhood.
Customer Reviews:
Not even good enough for camp !.......2007-06-30
This is a terrible show. The lyrics are childish, often repeating the same line many times in a row. The mikes curved around the actors faces are terribly distracting and more in keeping with a rock concert than a biblical musical. The sets are unattractive and boring. Val Kilmer is horribly miscast and UNattractive to the point of being unwatchable. He should NEVER have been shown without a shirt as a young Moses. He was obviously a 40 year + man! It was also obvious that by the time he got to the last song that his not so great voice was giving out.
This was not even good enough to qualify as a campy production and it was truly a painful experience to watch.
Good Music and okay performance from Val Kilmer.......2007-06-27
I saw the live production in Hollywood. Great performances from supporting cast and I like the music as well. I'm a fan of Val Kilmer, but he is not that great singer and can't really share the same stage with others who are so good.
VAL as MOSES.......2007-06-16
I heard about this production when it was in California, but I never had a chance to see it until it came out on DVD. So I asked people in New York and in California, what THEY thought, and most of the folks said it was a production to laugh at. I didn't it it that way. True, Mr. Kilmer isn't a
great singer, but I am a Val Kilmer fan and even with his shortcomings as a singer, I enjoyed his performance. I also give the production a lot of credit for their presentation as a whole. The supporting cast was excellent, and the useof projections and live action was pretty darn good, with the army coming over the mountain in projection. Three stand out performances: Moses's mother, Ramses, and Ramses wife who was really in love with Moses. Terrific performances! Teri
My Kids Have a Ball With This Musical!.......2007-05-10
Want to see the four and under crowd dance up a storm, and when not dancing, glued to the screen? Then 'The Ten Commandments - The Musical' will be a happy addition to your DVD library.
The performances are great all around, and the music grows on you with just a few playings. Unfortunately it looks as if the music CD will never be produced; not to worry. Any DVD audio ripping program will remedy this, and deliver a musical score that will be a family favorite for years!
Excellent..........2007-02-06
Very well done....I wasn't sure at first when I saw it at the video store...the singing was incredible-the music haunting. Chorus numbers exciting and captivating. I haven't been excited about a musical like this since Les Mis and Rent! I'm anxious to find the cd so I can listen in the car!

Territory unventured!.......2007-06-27
This collection of stories has taken on the challeng of helping kids understand not only the meaning of the commandments but also the time frame and lifestyles of the people at that period. They have done a great job illustrating the relationship of Moses to the people of Isreal as well.
Both my preschool and grade school age children were rivited through the entire series. I expect many repeatative viewings of these program and great discussion from them.
Great Job K10C! I would like to see you take on the stories of the Judges time period as well.
Kids Ten Commandments.......2007-01-08
Wow!!!! Since the commandments had been taken out of schools and public places, it is a delight to know there are ways to bring the laws of God to the hearts of the children. My family finds them a delight to watch. It reminds the children to keep Gods Laws in their heart. I loved every moment of them
Thank you
Good Quality entertainment.......2006-05-01
I knew this was a great series after reading some of the comments by Josh McDowell and other famous Christian writers. I was concerned about video-quality on a Hi-Definition set yet once I started the first DVD I was relieved. This set would probably be a great homeschooling tool for parents who want to introduce their kids to the fundamentals of God's Law.
The downside is the shortness of the episodes. All 5 (a little over 20 minutes each) should have easily fit on one single DVD instead of 5. But then the price would have been lower and what's good for the consumer may not be good for the studio.

--Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Unique and darkly funny.......2007-05-01
This is a unique, imaginative movie about a Job-like character who sets out to break the 10 C's as revenge against God. But I think people of any religious persuasion (or none) can enjoy it. If you can appreciate a dark comedy, you'll love this movie.
Interesting and Overlooked.......2006-12-08
After a string of otherwise-inexplicable disasters (the loss of his wife, his job, and his house), Seth becomes convinced that, for some reason, God is out to get him. Since prayer doesn't help him--on the contrary--Seth decides to break every one of the Ten Commandments. That puts him on a strange path, where he reencounters his sister-in-law, who's stuck in a miserable marriage; and literally faces death. The end is strange, unexpected and quite beautiful.
finally on dvd!.......2004-11-22
I have been waiting for this movie to be released on dvd for years! Sad but not depressing -- and the ending is pitch-perfect.
this is an ancient story. . ........2002-08-02
This is a retelling of the Job story from the Old Testament. And the genius of the film is that (even though the movie includes another biblical story to wind up Seth's story) it ends much like the book of Job; there is no answer to why all these things happen to humans, but still there is the overwhelming sense that you just have to know more about this God. I'm sure this film doesn't sit well with conservative Jews or Christians--too much sex. That's okay--not much sits well with conservative viewers. It is a nice counterpoint to the notion on our culture that if you love God, nothing bad will ever happen to you. Here, Seth perseveres in this relationship even though he is terribly angry with God.
Unusual and interesting.......2002-03-04
Seth (Aidan Quinn) is in a bad way. His pregnant wife drowned a year ago, his house has been demolished in a tornado, and he's lost his job. "Why, God?" he asks. God responds with a carefully aimed lightning bolt which not only hits Seth, but also manages to maim his pet dog.
Homeless and jobless, Seth goes to stay with his late wife's sister, Rachel (Courteney Cox) and her no-good husband, Harry (Anthony LaPaglia). And Harry's collection of priceless guitars. We know that Harry is no good because the first time we see him, he's cheating on Rachel with gusto. Seth is lost and confused - why has God chosen to punish him, a good, loyal, hard-working religious man, rather than someone like, say, Harry? Not only is he confused, he's getting pretty angry. So he makes up his mind to break each of the Ten Commandments, one by one.
"Commandments" raises some interesting questions - very few of which it actually manages to answer. Most of the time, it doesn't even make an attempt at this. Rather than trying to figure out exactly *why* God is punishing Seth, it turns into a comedy as Seth wife-covets, ignores the Sabbath and blasphemes his way across the screen. More interesting than Seth is Harry, who is nasty in a refreshingly human way, while Courteney Cox as Rachel is lovely, but more than a little distant.
The characters and their dilemmas are somewhat inaccessible; we end up not caring about them as much as we should, I guess. A lot of the scenes seem illogical, and the cold blue sets do their part in cutting off the audience. However it's a lot more quirky and off-beat than most of the comedies in circulation at the moment. Keep an eye out for it.

The Ten Commandments unfolds with all of the spectacle, violent human drama, and grand inspiration that have earned it its distinction as the greatest story ever told. When an oracle prophesizes that a child will become Prince of Egypt, a time of danger approaches the kingdom. The Egyptian Pharaoh (Paul Rhys, From Hell) orders the massacre of all newborn males. But one child, Moses - the son of a Hebrew slave - escapes certain death when he is set adrift on the Nile. As years pass, he is raised in a royal Egyptian household and, with no memory of his family, rises to the stature of prince. Upon discovery of his true heritage, and inspired by a fiery message from God, Moses (Dougray Scott, Mission: Impossible II) embarks upon a noble and desperate fight to reclaim his destiny as the leader and liberator of the Hebrew people. With a stellar cast that includes Mia Maestro (TV's Alias) and Golden Globe® winner Omar Sharif (Lawrence of Arabia), The Ten Commandments is unsurpassed in its vision - both intimate and grand.

SAMSON AND DELILAH - 1949 - (VICTOR MATURE) - Everyone is familiar with the Old Testament Bible story of the mighty Samson and the treacherous Delilah, and how the strongman was robbed of his powers once the biblical femme fatale sheared off his locks. This 1949 version is retold in splashy Cecil B. DeMille style, with Technicolor that practically jumps off the screen and larger-than-life portrayals all around. The gorgeous Hedy Lamarr plays the vindictive Delilah to Victor Mature's Samson. Mature uses his expressive features to full advantage, melting hearts as the vulnerable Samson sans curls. TEN COMMANDMENTS - 1956 - (CHARLTON HESTON) - Legendary silent film director Cecil B. --Tom Keogh * NOTE: THESE SPECIAL EDITION IMPORT DVDS FEATURE: 1.
