If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills--it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy--about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents--out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly '90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. --Marshall Fine

Description

Hallie Parker, a hip Californian, and Annie James, a proper London miss (both played by Lohan) are identical twins who don't even know each other exists -- until they accidentally meet at summer camp. Now they're up to their freckles in schemes and dreams to switch places, get their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson) back together, and have the family they've always wished for!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Remakes.......2007-07-02

Lindsay Lohan made her first appearance in this latest remake of the Disney classic based on the German children's book. Two girls meet at summer camp. Other than their styles, they look exactly the same. When their hatred of each other forces them to be isolated together they learn the truth. They are sisters. Their parents split up and each took one of the twins and never mentioned the other. Wanting to see their other parent, the girls switch places. When the parents find out about the switch they will have to get together to make an exchange of siblings.

But there is a snag. The father is about to get remarried. Now everything has to be sped up if there is any hope of getting the parents back together again. Revelations and madcap hijinks make up the rest of the film as the twins do everything in their power to stop the wedding and reunite their parents.

Much better than the Olsen Twin remake. While much of the story is very close to the original, it has been properly updated. The parents were a shipboard romance that failed. Newer technology has Lohan beside herself even more than Hayley Mills was. The rest of the cast is excellent and Quaid (the father) really shows he is a better actor than he is usually given credit for. Even the extras are entertaining. A fun documentary about making Lindsay twins and an extra scene involving the Queen of England. Fun for the whole family. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Family Fun.......2007-06-08

As with the original version of this movie with Hayley Mills, this is a nice movie despite the premise being so horribly ridiculous. What nice divorcing parents would separate their twins, each take custody of one and never mention or attempt to see the other for 12 years? I did thoroughly enjoy Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson in their roles. There were several differences between this movie and the 1961 version, actually enough to make this enjoyable. I didn't feel like I was watching different actors play the parts and recite the lines of the same characters from that movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-21

Great funny movie, perfect for the family. Everyone will like it!! get the soundtrack too music is great. Awesome movie.

3 out of 5 stars Cutesy.......2007-04-18

I vaguely remember the 1961 version of The Parent Trap. I say vaguely because that version of the movie was apparently as equally compelling as the 1998 version...which isn't that compelling. But...my kids enjoyed it thoroughly.

The movie takes place way before Lindsay Lohan's pics could be spotted...or should I say pics of Lindsay's privates could be spotted...all over the Internet. Lindsay plays (both) twins separated at birth by their divorcing parents. When the twins meet up by chance 10 or so years later they come up with a diabolical plan to reunite their parents.

Anyone not familiar enough with the story has been under a rock...perhaps since 1961. Anyone that missed the movie deliberately because it sounds too cutesy and far-fetched has done himself or herself a favor. This is a movie for kids. Adults will be more entertained watching their kids interpret the themes in the movie.

So if you're over the age of 14 and you've somehow found yourself contemplating The Parent Trap as the next movie that you just have to see among all of the other available titles...I would say that life under that rock has taken its toll on you in a most severe way.

If you're looking for a decent movie for your age 6 - 14 year old(s)...this could be the one if your kids can handle a couple of smooches (no...none by Lindsay...Dennis Quaid gets a few kisses from Elaine Hendrix and Natasha Richardson). Oh, and I would be remiss not to warn, I'm not sure that the Speedo that Simon Kunz appears in for a brief scene is suitable for viewing by anyone!

Product Description

The revolution came when we weren't looking. It happened in a garage. In a dorm room. In countless hours of effort, imagining and intrigue. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates were changing the way the world works, lives and communicates.

The event-packed saga of the quirky visionaries who jump-started the future unfolds with exhilarating, cutting-edge style in Pirates of Silicon Valley. Noah Wyle (ER) portrays Jobs and Anthony Michael Hall (The Dead Zone) portrays Gates in this chronicle of the fierce and often humorous battle to rule the fledgling personal computer empire. "The story is almost Shakespearean... it's a tale of lust, greed, ambition, love and hate," writer/director Martyn Burke reflects. And it's a success story unlike any other.

Running Time: 97 min.

This dramatization of the tangled history of Apple Computer and Microsoft, based on a book by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, hits enough of the right notes to make its failures all the more frustrating. The script follows the entwined paths of Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates with a pointed sense of the cultural divide between the hip, self-absorbed Apple cofounder and the brilliant alpha geek behind Microsoft's eventual software empire, contrasting the Mac's countercultural underpinnings with the PC's more strait-laced origins. But Pirates of Silicon Valley seemingly can't decide whether it wants to be a serious-minded history of these key figures in the personal computer revolution or a trashy wallow in the more ignoble foibles of its principals. As a result, it falls short of exacting history while never achieving the guilty pleasure it might have.

If Gates has become synonymous with corporate conquest at its most striking, Pirates' interest lies more with Jobs, given a nervous energy and flashes of adolescent selfishness by Noah Wyle, who benefits from a reasonable physical resemblance to the Apple chief. Eyewear and a comb-over do nearly as well for Anthony Michael Hall, who also grafts some of Bill Gates's better-known mannerisms onto his performance and renders Gates as a smart if socially maladroit entrepreneur who, like Jobs, provides the ambition and business savvy to exploit his partner's computing talents. There are a few fanciful touches (Ballmer and Wozniak become Greek choruses, addressing the viewer as they comment on the principals), but the story plays out in straightforward fashion. It's tantalizing to consider how the Apple/PC melodrama might have fared with an edgier, more openly satirical script. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-29

This movie was very inetersting. It shows how the modern personal computer industry started.

5 out of 5 stars Insanely great!.......2007-06-04

Hugely enjoyable and quite accurate (by most accounts) telling of the rise and ultimate clash of two modern tech titans, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Canadian Martyn Burke deserves great credit for both writing and directing this gem. While made for television, this is better by far than most made-for-theater Hollywood productions. The 70's and 80's music fits especially well; tremendously appropriate songs and soundtrack for the story. And the use of the famous Apple "1984" commercial, compared with the vision of a huge, televised Bill Gates hovering over a humbled Steve Jobs is absolutely brilliant.

The dual narration is brilliant too, using the Steve Wozniak character to narrate the Apple story, while the Steve Ballmer character narrates the Microsoft side of things. Sure, there are major oversimplifications of many characters, and while a Paul Allen character is an active presence here - we learn virtually nothing about him as a person. But so what? As the commentary on the DVD points out, there's an almost Shakespearean feel to much of this. The focus is on the events surrounding the ultimate clash for PC superiority between Apple and Microsoft, and on Jobs himself, to a lesser extent on Gates. With no attempt to fully flesh out the other players (and none needed, in the particular story that's being told/dramatized). A few weakish scenes are included, but not many; virtually every scene adds a dimension to the plot and to the ultimate conclusion. The pace is very good, very strong. Noah Wyle gives a terrific performance as Steve Jobs; Anthony Michael Hall is also excellent as Bill Gates. And the DVD has a brief but interesting and entertaining introduction by Wyle; be sure to view it.

As to any "inaccuracies", from what I can tell those are very, very minor. Those interested may want to check Steve Wozniak's website, a section (in "letters") discusses his take on this movie. In a nutshell, Woz was not consulted for the movie, and was flattered by the way he was portrayed. He seemed to feel the movie was accurate or portrayed accuracies; he mentions a few things such as they weren't allowed to wear the "Alice in Wonderland" costumes home, but changed out of them before leaving the performance - personally I thought it was a nice touch to have them walking home while still in costume. Also there's some obvious dialog added for humorous or dramatic purposes; for example, in one scene the Gates character tries to connect socially with women by complimenting their "bandwidth" and by attempting to imitate John Travolta's disco moves while on rollerskates - funny, almost believable, but not likely strict reality. Or when both Jobs and Gates quote the Picasso line about "...great artists steal", but Gates (unlike Jobs) doesn't really care which artist said it. Minor stuff like that should be treated as artistic/dramatic license, not absolute reality. It's a movie (or docudrama), not a strict documentary, yet still manages to make a great story while still being essentially true to the reality of the events. (By the way, "Insanely Great" was of course an Apple marketing phrase for the Mac, created by Steve Jobs himself; so I'm not meaning to infringe on any copyright there!).

4 out of 5 stars Decent TNT original movie, nice brief stroll through computer history........2007-05-31

The computer revolution has change everything over the past 30. I hope someday a good documentary will be available. This film is so far the only thing I have noted along the way that even tried to touch on the computer wars at the beginning. TNT produced this film back in 1999 as one of its first original movie shows. Its good drama, and really got me interested in looking at the interesting history of computer development. Yes it's kinda nerdy, but hey, I think everybody has to admit it, Apple/Macintosh has always been a more reliable/stable system, very hard to crash. Why the heck then did the IBM/microsoft platform take off as it did? Well, this movie only touches on it. Noah Wyle plays the outlandish Steve Jobes, who was co founder of Apple with Steve Woznyack. This movie illistrates his control in the company, but only touches how Apple's priprietary protection/isolation killed its strong foothold on the market, while the IBM/IBM clone market skyrocketed secondary to competition keeping computer price and software down while Microsoft, the little program maker, rake in the money from lisencing it's software. Is this really how Steve Jobes and Bill gates (anthony michael hall) are in real life, I don't think so, but hey, its still a decent movie. Check it out if you like this kind of history.

3 out of 5 stars good but not accurate.......2007-05-21

the movie paints a good picture of the people in the movie, and touches on a lot of realistic events, but is not totally accurate

5 out of 5 stars Good unbiased information.......2007-05-18

My wife and I enjoyed this film alot. It's cool to see how all of this computer stuff began, and how stupid the big companies were early on. It's interesting because they still are slow to react and a little stupid most of the time. It really shows the truth of what Bill Gates did, and has continued to do, which is be dishonest, cheat, steal, AND make really low quality products. But it is not biased as it shows the downfalls of Steve Jobs and Apple in the early days as well. Get this movie!

The manicured lawns and overstuffed garbage cans of suburbia become a buffet for woodland creatures in Over the Hedge. A self-centered raccoon named RJ (voiced by Bruce Willis, Die Hard) steals and accidentally destroys the hoard of an angry bear (Nick Nolte, 48 Hours), who gives the raccoon a week to replace it. RJ despairs--until he meets an odd gang of foragers, ranging from a turtle named Verne (Garry Shandling, The Larry Sanders Show), a father/daughter duo of opossums (the bizarre pairing of William Shatner and pop singer Avril Lavigne), a family of porcupines (with A Mighty Wind's Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as the parents), and a hyperactive squirrel named Hammy (Steve Carell, The 40 Year Old Virgin). By convincing these friendly beasts that the suburban homesteads on the other side of a recently erected hedge are a mother-lode of cast-off food, RJ hopes to dupe them into doing his gathering. But when the suburban residents realize they've been invaded by woodland pests, an exterminator is called to take care of the problem. The overarching storyline of Over the Hedge is pure formula--your basic "family matters more than anything" lesson--but moment to moment, the movie is delightfully crisp and clever. The animation is topnotch, the acting is excellent (other voices include those of Allison Janney, The West Wing, and Thomas Haden Church, Sideways), and the satirical jabs at consumerism are actually funny. An above-average animated movie. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Story line just too simple, and not funny enough.......2007-06-27

It's funny in some clips but in the whole, not funny enough. I thought my son will love the animals in the movie but he doesn't like it at all. Neither my wife nor myself find it very enjoyable either.

I bought it because all the great reviews we read about but pretty disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!!.......2007-06-25

You can never go wrong with a movie fill with actors/actresses voices. This movie had a very good stroy line. It was hilarious!!! This is a must own for your collection. There's very few movies where I watch it more than one time. This is one that I will watch over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars RJ Learns The Value of Friendship.......2007-06-12

I have always been a fan of animation, Disney, cartoons, etc. There have been many new releases that haven't made much of an impression with me - Over The Hedge is NOT one of those! The entertainment value of this movie is multiplied several times over as a result of the cleverly woven ethical dilemmas and life lessons scattered throughout. The tough guy, RJ accomplishes his original goal - only to find that everything he was taking, would have been voluntarily shared with him - because he was considered a "friend". Not only does Rj find out what real friendship means, the original gang also learns a valuable lesson about trust and loyalty.
This is a wonderfully written, exceptionally well presented movie - that is fun for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPEND THE EVENING!.......2007-06-07

I am not much into animated movies but this one was top notch.
Such wonderful slapstick comedy by a bunch of animals that have run afoul of human neighbors.
The whole complete entourage was a wonderful group to place together.
Bruce Willis as the troublemaker RJ, the coon who had to run afoul of the bear and his snacks [Nick Nolte].

I have to admit that I enjoyed, even more, the extra - describing each character and the personality taking the part.
And Thomas Hayden Church as the exterminater - so real and different - I had only seen him in the frontier western.
HIGHLY ENTERTAINING - Recommend for all to see.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FILM FOR YOUNG AND OLD!.......2007-05-31

I really liked this movie! The animation and characters are first rate, though the story is simple it's all you'll need to get the ball rolling in the wacky and very funny comedy. The DVD looks fantastic!

This is one of those movies you watched as a child and will want to watch again as an adult. Me for example: I went out with a few friends came home slightly tipsy. And all of a sudden I thought I want to watch that movie... The one with the chipmunks and singing and traveling the world. That thought stuck in my head for WEEKS. It took me awhile to find, but it is well worth it. I think I love this movie even more than I did as a child.

Ummm, I have LOVED this movie since I was a kid!! I loved it when I was in high school and now...I have to say, it is even better from an adults point of view!! I am SO happy that my kids can grow up watching it as well!! Thank goodness for kids movies that adults can watch, enjoy and laugh hysterically at as well!! OWN THIS MOVIE!!!! LOL

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-03-17

This movie was one of my favorites as a child and I just recently bought and watched it... It was as good as I remembered it. To top it all off, my daughter (age 1.5) LOVED the movie. She danced when they performed songs and everytime she tried to go play during the movie got distracted and stared back at the screen in mid walk. I would definately recommend this movie to "kids" of all ages.

3 out of 5 stars Why No Widescreen?!.......2007-06-30

This is a great movie, but it was originally shown in theaters in the 2:35:1 Widescreen format. I know some people like the full screen format over widescreen, but so much of the beauty and landscapes are lost in pan and scan full screen. Why can't this film be released with both pan and scan & widescreen. I know I am not the only person who would like to see it released in widescreen. Please consider a re-release Disney for the widescreen audience. Thanks

Classic cartoon fans will delight in the bevy of classic Tom and Jerry animated shorts, each of which ends in the proclamation "Made in Hollywood, U.S.A.," and most of which are from the '40s. Fifteen episodes (totaling more than an hour) are featured. Included are: "The Cat Concerto," "Johann Mouse," "The Little Orphan," "Yankee Doodle Mouse," "Salt Water Tabby," "Tee for Two," "Solid Serenade," "Zoot Cat," "Johann Mouse," "Dr. Jekyll" and Mr. Mouse," "Mouse in Manhattan," "Kitty Foiled," "The Little Orphan," and "Jerry's Diary." It might surprise more mature viewers, with fond recollections of the adventures of the gray cat and the little mouse, how relentlessly violent (albeit cartoon violence) the 'toons are. This video, a collection of chase-centric films, is notably chock full of head bangin', body bashing, poisoning, and all-around disorder.

The absolute highlight are two shorts low on smashin' and high on entertainment: "The Cat Concerto" and "Mouse in Manhattan," the first with Tom as the focus and the second with Jerry. They both involve forays into entertainment, a great soundtrack, and a fun story. The DVD edition adds "The Worry Song" from Anchors Aweigh, the classic showcase of the amazing (and oft-copied) duet of animation and live action, as Jerry dances with the wonderful Gene Kelly. Contrasted with the PC content of today's 'toons, Tom and Jerry is a literal blast from the past--a must for collectors, and for parents comfortable with explaining that Tom isn't really burned to ashes, and Jerry hasn't been beheaded. --N.F. Mendoza

I got this for my son who is 4 and it takes me back to watching them when I was around his age. Great quality, great Tom & Jerry choices.

5 out of 5 stars YEAH! Classic T&J takes me back to when I was 5.......2007-06-17

Wow..nothing says 1940 like a good Tom and Jerry cartoon! This DVD is worth every penny. Don't steal it from the internet...purchase it here and do the right thing. These episodes are classic and took me back to my childhood. I had not seen some of these since I was very little and it was fun to explore the animation of the day. The animators from back then really had ability that has since been long lost.

get this DVD. it's worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD for the price.......2007-06-08

My son is 4 years old and absolutely loves this DVD. He first saw Tom and Jerry on our local cable TV but it only comes on Saturday mornings, so this was a great DVD for him. It has so many short episodes it keeps his attention, especially in the car on long trips. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A mean,stupid cat and a sweet,lovable mouse.......2007-03-15

If you're a fan of MGM theatrical cartoons, this item is for you. Tom and Jerry has audiences, young and old, cracking up with their hilarious hijinks. Tom meets a pretty girl cat on the beach in SALT WATER TABBY. Jerry takes interest in the girl cat. The same girl cat is seen in SOLID SERENADE. Tom musically woos her via bass fiddle, disturbing Jerry's sleep. Jerry is automatically bounced out of bed on his face and stomach and the rhythm of the bass keeps bouncing Jerry. Tom impresses another female cat(not a glamourous one, though) wearing a "zoot suit" in THE ZOOT CAT. The usually totally silent Jerry speaks one line in the cartoon,"What's cooking, toots?". Tom spoke in the cartoon also,a little more than Jerry. Tom's suit shrinks to the point where it now fits Jerry! Jerry is off to Manhattan in MOUSE IN MANHATTAN,only to be met with disappointment. Jerry was used to apply shoe polish(he ends up in blackface,a scene never seen on some TV stations including Cartoon Network). He even felt light friction of the heavy New York City traffic. So,he's back home with Tom and again in his hole in the wall. TEE FOR TWO features a lawnmower-shorn Tom and his bee-stung mouth(courtesy of angry, intimidated bees). THE YANKEE DOODLE MOUSE was excellent. If I'm not mistaking,it was at least an Academy Award nominee. Tom is a concert pianist in the Oscar-winning THE CAT CONCERTO. Jerry is asleep inside the grand piano Tom is playing on stage and the striking hammers inside awake Jerry. Jerry, angry with Tom,finishes the performance himself and dons a tuxedo in the final scene with the spotlight shining on him. THE LITTLE ORPHAN,another Academy Award nominee, features Tom,Jerry and Jerry's visiting nephew Nibbles playing Thanksgiving scenes and in the final scene, praying before consuming the Thanksgiving dinner. Nibbles eats all of the turkey like a termite! He appears rotund in the final scene. In KITTY FOILED,there's Tom,Jerry and an unnamed canary riding a train set on the living room floor. In the final scene,Jerry and the canary are happily whistling away in the canary's cage. An excerpt of this cartoon became stock footage for LIFE WITH TOM(not seen on this DVD). JERRY'S DIARY contains stock footage from previous cartoons(released before that one). Tom was so furious about many of the statements Jerry wrote about him in his diary. Jerry comes along only to meet Tom who splatters a pie all over Jerry and his hole in the wall. The other cartoons are awesome. I loved them as a kid over two decades ago.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD!!! A TRUE CLASSIC!.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. There are a few concepts (it's the classic T&J cartoons) that may not be appropriate for children, but my son still (3 yrs later) loves to watch Tom & Jerry. This old DVD (old cartoons) seems to catch and keep his attention moreso than some newer ones. I personally love T&J so this is a no brainer to recommend this to anyone but note: it does have a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

The trend is to convert movies into stage musicals, but The Producers goes a step further: making a feature film of the smash-hit stage musical that was adapted from the 1968 film. The chief drawing card, of course, is Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reprising their roles from the stage. Lane plays Max Bialystock, a legendary Broadway producer who hasn't had a hit show in a long time. Enter nebbish accountant Leo Bloom (Broderick), who tells Bialystock he could actually make more money with a flop than a hit. So the two set out to produce the worst Broadway musical of all time, one guaranteed to close on opening night, with the collaboration of an outrageous cast of characters: Will Ferrell as sieg heil-ing author Franz Liebkind, Uma Thurman as Swedish bombshell Ulla, Gary Beach as director Roger De Bris, and Roger Bart as his assistant, Carmen Ghia, among others.

As directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman (who did the same honors on Broadway) and co-written by Mel Brooks, The Producers is laugh-out-loud funny. It's also a relentlessly over-the-top, shamelessly bawdy, stereotype-ridden comedy that may turn off its audience just as much as its centerpiece, Springtime for Hitler, was intended to. But Broadway fans who are used to larger-than-life figures who play to the back row while showering the first row with spit, are likely to forgive and just enjoy the famous granny-walker dance, a supporting cast dotted with Broadway performers (playing a taxi driver is Brad Oscar, who originated the role of Liebkind on Broadway then later played Bialystock), or the mere spectacle of seeing Lane and Broderick memorializing the performances that millions never got a ticket to see. (For maximum laughs, stick around through the closing credits.) --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars A stroke . . . . . OF GENIUS!!!!.......2007-04-28

First time I watched the movie, I thought, "What in the world was I thinking???". The next time I watched it was with my teenager (son) who doesn't like ANY musical. Big surprise -- he was totally captivated by the subtle (and not so subtle) humor and unbelievable comedic timing between Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Finally bought a copy on DVD for our home collection -- we think it's a HOOT!

2 out of 5 stars Should have been better........2007-04-07

OK... really 2.5 stars, but that is not possible. It dropped to 2 because it really struggled to earn the .5 mark.

I typically don't care for "remakes" and because the original is one of my favorite Mel Brooks films, I resisted seeing this until I had the opportunity to purchase a copy for under a dollar. For that price, I reasoned, it would make a good companion piece to the original. It does... almost.

The directing is, at best, pedestrian. Most of the time I felt as if I were watching a play that had been filmed. Maybe that's what was intended. If you like that directing style then you'll not find a problem. I don't. I expect movies to have better direction and more camera movement/angles... even movies based on plays/musicals.

Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom was simply terrible! His performance was wooden, stilted, and only passable in the very few times he appeared to be attempting to channel Gene Wilder. Maybe this is acceptable for a Broadway play but NOT for a film. Broderick CAN do better. I've seen it.

Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock almost made up for the poor performance from Broderick. In fact he was the main reason I made it all the way through the film! While he is no Zero Mostel, his was the best performance in the film.

I normally don't like Will Ferrell at all. However, here he did a good job as Franz Liebken. His performance was almost as good as that of Kenneth Mars in the original. The only problem was almost every time he was on the screen, so too were the awful animatronic pigeons supplied by Jim Henson company. They were so distractingly bad as to prevent full enjoyment of any scene in which they were to be found!

Uma Thurmon was a suprise. Very nice performance.

While I did miss Dick Shawn as hippie-freak Lorenzo S. Dubois, the updated take on the director, Roger De Bris, taking over the lead after Franz had broken his leg was done well enough that it really was a minor blip on the radar. Overall an excellent change and good update for the times.

There were several scenes I really missed. Most notably the one where Leo and Max had gone to the corner bar to celebrate their failure when in comes the crowd raving about how funny it all was and how they can't wait for the second act! In the remake, the very redundant, very long, very boring musical number in the cell where Max recounts the ENTIRE play could have been dropped to allow this scene (and others) to remain. At least most of it is on the deleted scenes portion of the release. This leads to perhaps the most glaring problem. The making of this script into a musical. The musical numbers were too frequent and too long causing the timing of the plot to suffer making for a longer production than necessary.

As in the original, the play-within-a-play "Springtime for Hitler" steals the show! While Mel Brooks was not on-screen this time as one of the Nazis delivering a one-liner, he *did* do the voice for the line!

Overall this *is* a funny film with several laugh-out-loud moments! It's Mel Brooks after all... The problem is that the directing and one very bad performance almost kill the funny.

If you are looking for a fair reproduction of the Broadway Musical, I get the impression that you'll get exactly that with this film even though several musical numbers were cut.

If you are looking for Mel Brooks... I encorage you to pick up the original. It's a superiour film in almost every respect.

And if you are one of those who stops a film (or leaves the theatre) as soon as the credits roll... don't this time and you'll be rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!!.......2007-03-09

We saw this show on Broadway and loved it. The movie was just as good or better. I don't know why the critics were lukewarm about it . Maybe they had issues with the gay humor. My whole family and I laughed until we ached. Mel Brooks is the funniest man on earth. Th cast was brilliant and it was hilarious, sad, poignent and full of life. Long live Mel Brooks!!

5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Film for Me.......2007-03-08

I saw this film on the rental rack and figured I would give it a try. I'm not sorry that I did as I found it to be really funny. I was able to follow the plotline really easily and I laughed at just about every scene in the movie. I also liked the fact that there were no swear words in the movie that I could recall, and while there are several refences, there weren't any actual sex scenes, which as a nice change to me.
I didn't know that this was a remake of a movie from the 1960's, nor that it was a play on Broadway, but why should anyone be surprised? After all, it seems that half the movies they come out with nowadays, are remakes of some movie put out in the 50's or 60's. I am not one who cares whether or not something is a remake; if a plot appeals to me, like this one did, then I will watch it, regardless.
Several other reviewrs have pointed out that this wasn't as good as the original, but you know what; so what? Seriously. The origianl was put out, what, almost fourty years ago? I wasn't around then, and truth be told, if I were to sit and watch the original version of this film, I probably wouldn't really understand several of the refrences or the black humor that version supposedly has.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and am planning to buy it as soon as I can. Don't let those reviewers who said this wasn't as good as the original deter you from making up your mind one way or the other on whether or not you should watch it. I know I didn't, but rented it and watched it and THEN read the reviews on Amazon. And am glad that I did it that way.

4 out of 5 stars How Did They Wreck This Movie??? .......2007-02-12

It's amazing....you have the musical hit of the decade to convert to the screen. So what do you do? You ditch the hilarious opening number (King of Broadway) that sets the stage and mood for the show; expand a much-too-long and exasperating sequence of the basic premise: "you can make more money with a flop than with a hit." Then, to make sure you fail, you miscast the role of Ula, leaving the lovely Cady Hoffman sitting at home while Uma Thurman does her best (which is not even near as good as it could be). Wrecked the show enough? No, not quite. Bring in Will Ferrell who does a great job of being Will Ferrell, and all the things that made "The Producers" such a hit have vanished...well, not quite. Once the movie hits its stride, it captures much of the magic of the original, but by then, who cares? The first 25 percent of the flick is awful, even with the incredible talents of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. I found the early parts of the movie to be an enormous disappointmemt, but still a good record of this hilarious show. I'm glad they filmed it. I enjoyed the last two-thirds of the movie, but by then I was so furious that it was difficult. It took real talent to screw up this funny, funny show!

From Sarah Waters, author of Tipping the Velvet, comes this twisting and twisted Victorian-era thriller with an L-word charge. Sally Hawkins stars as Sue, an orphan who grows up among the reprobates of Lant Street to become an accomplished "fingersmith" (thief). Elaine Cassidy costars as Maud Lilly, an heiress who, as a young girl, was plucked from the madhouse and raised by her stern, bibliophile uncle (Charles Dance). He makes her wear gloves at all times so as not to smudge the precious tomes he makes her read every night. Enter Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans, the otherwise sterling cast's weakest link), an artist hired to give her painting lessons. But he has designs on Maude's fortune, and recruits Sue for an elaborate con. That's when the gloves really come off. Originally broadcast on the BBC, this riveting three-part tale of illicit passion and betaryal is by turns harrowing and quite erotic (the tasteful sex scenes manage to generate heat without baring a lot of skin). The literate script reveals its feminist leanings ("You are a man and might do everything," Maude tells Richard during their first meeting. "I am a woman and might do nothing."). The superb cast includes Academy Award-nominee Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) as Mrs. Sucksby, a Fagin-esque character who mentored Sue, and has a few surprises for Maud, as well. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Based on the acclaimed novel by Sarah Waters, author of Tipping the Velvet.

The lives of two young women collide in an engrossing Victorian thriller that alternates between the twisting back alleyways of Dickensian London and the cloistered gloom of a Gothic mansion.

Raised in a den of petty thieves or "fingersmiths," plucky orphan Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins) agrees to help a conman known as Gentleman (Rupert Evans) defraud and betray wealthy heiress Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy). But Sue's plans are turned upside down when she falls in love with Maud. Then the women are separated—each to her own hellish prison—just as they realize the strength of their passion for each other . . .

Fingersmith was originally broadcast on the BBC and features Oscar®-nominee and BAFTA-winner Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) and BAFTA-nominee Charles Dance (The Jewel in the Crown).

This was a beautiful film, the characters were very well-rounded, I was convinced that the two women really loved each other and the story took an unexpected twist which I really enjoyed.

4 out of 5 stars Fingersmith.......2007-05-31

I bought this film after buying another on the 'people who bought that sometimes buy this' kind of link. My original purchase was of a DVD called 'Tipping the Velvet' which was based on a book by Sarah Waters. I had seen the original of this when it was screened as a TV mini-series and very much enjoyed it.
Now to the Fingersmith DVD. This film claims to be based on the same book and the synpsis is similar. Other than this there is no similarity in the two films.
Fingersmith has a completely different plot and though it is a good film I cannot see how the makers can claim a link to the original book.
There are some outstanding performances in this film especially by Imelda Staunton.
A good film and worth the time watching it.

5 out of 5 stars This film is beautiful beyond words............2007-05-17

Being a big fan of period pieces, I was eager to view this film. I don't necessarily consider it a "lesbian movie", even though I have several in my collection. It is so much more than that. It's worth watching over and over because there is so much to the story and the characters. Yes, it starts off slow, but all good things in life do. The few scenes between the two main characters are deeply moving and so incredibly beautiful that I just held my breath in awe. The talented actresses brought the amazing story to life. One of my favorites!!!!

brilliant book.An absorbing story, I could hardly put it down!

5 out of 5 stars lesbian romance in a Dickensian setting?.......2007-05-10

I was a little leery sitting down to this since a friend warned me that it was nothing more than a lesbian romance, a genre which -- with apologies -- has so far had little to say to me.

But my friend had mischaracterized the film. "Fingersmith" is supremely worthwhile, filled with enough gripping twists and reversals to bring even the most inattentive viewer bolt upright. While a couple of scenes in the first half are indeed shot through with steamy woman-on-woman smooching, on the whole the Sapphic aspect of the story takes a back seat to other elements of the plot.

So if you can get past the spectacle of kissing women, you've got quite a good film in store for you: at times the acting is unbelievable; and the script is always fresh, convincing, and thoroughly unpredictable.

There are two episodes, which must be separately loaded. The first half features such a jaw-dropper at the end that you'll find yourself wishing you had watched the thing a lot more carefully!

This is a BBC production set in London and environs about the time of the setting of Dicken's novels. But it's far more raw and gritty than even his most seamy outings.

It was also obvious that the BBC spent some real money on this: the outdoor scenes in London, the sets, the crowd scenes, and the production values in general are all very high-quality and convincing. Money well spent.

With the makings of a classic, Disney's Tuck Everlasting compares favorably with such family favorites as The Secret Garden and Fairy Tale: A True Story. Loosely but respectfully adapted from Natalie Babbitt's beloved children's book, this appealing fable focuses on the timeless Tuck family, blessed--and cursed--with immortality after drinking from a magical spring. Hiding their secret over passing decades, they are discovered in 1914 by Winnie (Alexis Bledel)--the only daughter of stern, upper-crust socialites--who encounters the life-affirming Jesse Tuck (Jonathan Jackson) and grows enchanted with his family (Sissy Spacek, William Hurt, Scott Bairstow) while her parents fear she's been kidnapped. The film's teenage romance is invented (Winnie is younger in Babbitt's book), but it's charmingly appropriate, and Ben Kingsley is perfect as a menacing man of mystery. Scoring a solid follow-up to his equally enjoyable My Dog Skip, director Jay Russell turns Tuck Everlasting into a magical plea for living life to its fullest. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Tuck Review.......2007-06-05

I personally loved this book. It is about a girl Winnie who finds a magical water spring. She saw a boy maybe a little bit older than her drink from it. when she asks if she could have some he says no. Then she demands the water because she owns the wood that the spring is in. He stops her then the boys mom and older brother come, he is relieved because they would know what to do. They take her to their house but on the way there they tell her the story. The story is that long ago they drank from it and as they grew on in life they realized that they were not getting any older from the time they drank the water. so they figured that they were immortal when Jesse the youngest boy fell out of a tree 30ft high right on his neck and didn't even hurt him, then when Tuck the father got bitten by a rattle snake and did not die, then Jesse ate poisen frogs stools and didn't even get sick, then the horse got mistaken for a deer and got shot and it didn't even leave a mark, thats when Tuck the father found out it was the water, so to make sure of it one day Tuck took his shotgun and before Jesse, Mae the mother, or Miles the older brother could do any thing he shot himself in the heart! It knocked him down but barely left a scratch. So the family tells the girl not to tell anyone about the spring. But the problem was a man heard the whole story and was planning to sell thge water! Thats when the story begins, but I am not going to tell you any more. But the one thing that made the story was that Jesse and Winnie fall in love. So I really think it was a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie!!!.......2007-05-17

I loved this movie so much. The first time i saw it was just after i read the book, And whenever they make a movie out of a book its never as good as the book. But this movie is definetly as good, or even better then the book. This movie is about a girl named Winnie who is fed up with life at home, and goes exploring in the woods. In the woods she meets a boy named Jesse Tuck, along with the rest of his family. Winnie learns that the Tuck family is imortal. They will live forever and can not die. They decide to keep her at their house, intill she understands why she can not tell about the little spring that makes them imortal. While she is staying with the Tucks Winnie and Jesse fall in love. There is an amazing scene that almost made me cry, when Winnie is being taken away from Jesse. Mae the mother hits the man who is trying to take away winnie on the head with a gun, and he dies. She and her husband are then put in jail, to be hung. The problom is, if she is hung she will not die, and every one will know the secret. If you want to know what happens next, see the movie!!!This movie has some very good acors including Alexis Bledel as Winnie,Jonathan Jackson as Jesse Tuck and Ben Kingsley as the Man in the Yellow Suit. All in all, this was a great movie and you should get it!!!

3 out of 5 stars A timeless tale, but no real chemistry between Winnie and Jesse........2007-04-09

I read the book as a teen in the 70's and really enjoyed it. As an adult with a small child and a more realistic notion of,"mortality," I related to the film on a different and more mature level. Regardless, it is a timeless tale for all ages.

One minor criticism is that I didn't sense any real romantic tension between Winnie and Jesse. Perhaps the problem was with casting. They looked so much alike that they seemed like brother and sister as opposed to passionate teens. Even when Winnie was doing that fireside dance, Jesse just seemed sort of oblivious.

William Hurt who played the father is one of my favorite actors. At times he seemed slightly too sophisticated to play the unsophisticated father, especially since I tend to type cast him as,"Nick," from the Big Chill.

I enjoyed the movie but whoever cast Jesse should not have cast a guy who liked like Winnie's brother to play her love interest.

5 out of 5 stars Pure And Enjoyable Fantasy!.......2007-03-28

This movie's story-line takes the viewers out of our ordinary world and succeeds in truly entertaining us, which is really enjoyable. There are elements of: a) a love story, b) real-life dilemmas, and c) tragedy and loss. I whole-heartedly recommend this to every viewer...

4 out of 5 stars A really sweet movie.......2007-03-09

I haven't read the book yet, but this movie is really sweet. Alexis Bledel really shows a whole other side of her acting abilities in this movie, versus her role in the Gilmore Girls. The movie is about the Tuck family and their unique gift: they can not die. They were traveling west in the late 1700's when they stopped at a spring and drank from it. The spring had magical powers and granted them an immortal life. The movie focuses on the love story between young Winifred (Alexis) and the youngest Tuck son, Jesse. Someone discovers the Tuck's secret and eventually the Tucks have to leave, but not before Jesse has to decide between Winifred and his family. I won't spoil the ending, but overall I think this movie was well written and would be a great addition to any child or young adults collection.
