Turbo-charged comic Jack Black shakes School of Rock to its foundations, wailing with born-again metalhead passion as Dewey Finn, a guitarist who gets kicked out of a band because he grandstands too much--or, to put it another way, enjoys himself. Through an intercepted phone call, Finn gets a job as a substitute teacher for a fifth grade class at a private grade school. Neither students nor teacher quite know what to do with each other until Finn discovers that some of his young charges can play instruments; at once he starts turning them into a blistering rock & roll troupe that can crush his former band at an upcoming competition. School of Rock is silly and formulaic, but director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused), writer Mike White (The Good Girl), and especially Black and co-star Joan Cusack invest the formulas with such glee that the movie is irresistibly fun. --Bret Fetzer

Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.
The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy
Description
John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

Michael Moore's superb documentary (following in the footsteps of Roger & Me and The Big One) tackles a meaty subject: gun control. Moore skillfully lays out arguments surrounding the issue and short-circuits them all, leaving one impossible question: why do Americans kill each other more often than people in any other democratic nation? Moore focuses his quest around the shootings at Columbine High School and the shooting of one 6-year-old by another near his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. By approaching the headquarters of K-Mart (where the Columbine shooters bought their ammo) and going to Charlton Heston's own home, Moore demands accountability from the forces that support unrestricted gun sales in the U.S. His arguments are conducted with the humor and empathy that have made Moore more than just a gadfly; he's become a genuine voice of reason in a world driven by fear and greed. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore (Roger & Me) takes aim at America's love affair with guns and violence in this Oscar(r)-winning* film that "demands attention" (People)! Mixing riveting footage, hilarious animation and candid interviews with everyone from the NRA's Charlton Heston to shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, Bowling for Columbine is a "brilliant" (The Hollywood Reporter) tour de force of filmmaking. *2002: Documentary Feature

Unless you're a newly hatched pod person..........2007-07-02
...you already know that one must consider the semiotics of exclusionism in order to fully understand Michael Moore's witticisms. But let me add that Michael lies routinely -- even under oath. I will start this discussion by arguing that "oligophrenic" hardly seems like a strong enough word to describe Michael. Then, I will present evidence that Michael is unable to support his assertions with documentation of any sort. Once we realize that, what do we do? The appropriate thing, in my judgment, is to clarify and correct some of the inaccuracies present in Michael's canards. I say that because to believe that he is the ultimate authority on what's right and what's wrong is to deceive ourselves. Ancient Greek dramatists discerned a peculiar virtue in being tragic. Michael would do well to realize that they never discerned any virtue in being unconscionable.
Michael's rejoinders are like an enormous barbarism-spewing machine. We must begin dismantling that structure. We must put a monkey wrench in its gears. And we must improve the physical and spiritual quality of life for the population at present and for those yet to come, because Michael has a one-track mind. That's clear. But either Michael has no real conception of the sweep of history, or he is merely intent on winning some debating pin by trying to pierce a hole in my logic with "facts" that are taken out of context. Now that this review is over, I pray that my logic and passion have convinced you that the most myopic personæ non gratæ I've ever seen thrive when the rest of us underestimate the threat they pose or are too weak or unorganized to hold the line.
Improtant issues done well-with reservations.......2007-06-18
There is much to like AND dislike about this movie.
people often dismiss M/M as a leftist, but I think he strikes a balance in this film as an equal-opportunity critic of both the far left AND the far right (note the discussion with Marilyn Manson about Bill Clinton where they both are quite critical of Mr. Bill).
The sections on Canada and gun control are quite deep in debunking the rationales of causes of violence in America. However, trying to compare violence in different countires and cultures (i.e., comparing America's violent past with the fact that Germany has less violence today but was responsible for the Holocaust) depends on relativity and perspective.
The section on blacks, violence, and the media was dead-on target, with Mike and a white professor walking through South Central Los Angeles without anyone trying to harm them, although it would have been interesting if they had interviewed one of the residents about their opinions of the perceptions of their community. The cartoon on violence and race relations was also thought provoking, if a tad simplified (the 'toon omits the fact that blacks DID rebel against our oppression between the slave rebellions and Rosa Parks, although this is not well known among non-historians).
The Charlton Heston interview was ok, except I did not like the exploitation of the picture of the dead six year old Michigan girl who was killed by gunfire and what Mike does with the picture in this scene. This smacks of opporunitist grandstanding of the worst kind, and I would hate to see the reaction of the child's parents to this!
But that is the only thing I really disliked about the film. That aside, it says a lot of things that really need to be said and provokes a lot of thought.
"Sicko", the movie on the health care industry, opens June 29th!.......2007-06-08
Michael Moore rules! Keep hope alive!
Go see "SICKO" on JUNE 29th! I'll be there!!
Not nearly as good as Farenheit.......2007-06-07
I expected a little more from this movie after watching Farenheit 911, perhaps Moore has gotten better with time. It's difficult to grasp what point he's trying to make in this film. In one breath Moore says that Americans are afraid of one another and lock their doors every night and behave irrationally, yet in the next he lists crime statistics as being multiple times higher than other countries. So what is the point? Americans lock their door because the crime rate is high, it seems like we're actually being intelligent rather than irrational. The cartoon with the Pilgrams and early America is hilarious and worth the price of admission, but even that winds up being very skewed at the end. I wish Moore would have tackled the problem of inner cities and the rampant gun problem rather than attack the "whites" throughout the entire film.
I am certainly in favor of far stricter regulations and laws regarding gun use, but Moore just seems to touch on way too many points that are disjointed. At one point he attacks the media for scaring us, yet he is a very member of this media and is basically just a reporter himself. There are some very humorous parts and some very intelligent insights, but Moore was definitely more polished by the time he produced Farenheit. I was slightly disappointed overall by this film, but it keeps your interest throughout.
guns don't kill people?.......2007-04-23
This film, flawed as it may be (mostly in the eyes of its detractors), once again must confront the blatantly inane axiom that "guns don't kill people." Guns DO kill people; and the people who use them are the cowards that stand behind them. The American Rifle Murderers and others of their ilk try to hide behind a Second Amendment that is now outdated historically and morally. And their gun lobbying and support have produced not only Columbine but the most recent tragedy in Virginia (2007). MIchael Moore should be applauded and lionized as a humorist with a true grit kick. What he says in this film is played out in this free (to die) society on a daily basis.

Customer Reviews:
In the Black.......2007-06-13
School of Rock is one of those films that's tailor-made for the comedian performing in it. This has become all the rage since Robin Williams played the Genie in Aladdin, Jim Carey in The Mask, or Will Ferrell in Elf. These sorts of films play to the comedian's strengths and minimize their weaknesses, and when they get it right, it's movie magic.
And so Black gets his moment in School of Rock. Black's been playing the overweight guy pining for the good old days of rock like geeks pine over the original Star Trek series, with pop-eyed enthusiasm far outweighing the energy that most people muster for just about anything. Black is truly the uber-music geek and the title is well earned through a film history of Black essentially playing the same guy: Bio-Dome (as Tenacious D), High Fidelity (as Barry), Shallow Hal (as Hal), and of course Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. In short, if there's going to be a film about kids learning about the pedigree of rock and roll, Black would be the guy who wrote, directed, and acted in it.
What's surprising is that this movie ISN'T Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. As a music geek, Black's tastes for music could easily alienate much of the audience. School of Rock isn't just about rock; it's about music appreciation, the lack of attention paid to kids in school, teacher malaise, and a society that no longer fights the Man. Or to put it another way, this is a movie made for the mainstream.
Which is what makes it so much fun. Our slacker hero, Dewey Finn (Jack Black), has been crashing at his substitute teacher friend's house (Ned, played by Mike White). When Ned's girlfriend (the lovely Sarah Silverman, playing a decidedly unfunny role) pushes for Dewey's ouster, the slob has to get a job. And so he does, by impersonating Ned at a private school for upper class kids. It's not long before Dewey throws out the curriculum and teaches the kids his own brand of history: good old, wholesome rock and roll.
School of Rock spends a lot of time struggling to justify the madness: the kids soundproof the room, teachers occasionally think they hear something, the uptight principal springs surprise visits (played by the delightfully naughty Joan Cusack), and parents start to get worried. Just about none of it is believable, most specifically when Dewey is finally caught by the police and ends up dashing down the hallway, two guitars in hand, without any further consequences.
But that's beside the point. Who cares if School of Rock bends the laws of time and space to allow Dewey's one chance in the sun, not as a rock star but as the aging patriarch of a band of insanely talented pre-teens? We came to see a rock show, and we get it.
Black flops around, he sweats, he tosses his head with manic glee, but most of all he passionately TEACHES. He teaches a large girl that her weight doesn't matter, teaches the geek that he should ignore the kids who make fun of him, teaches the brat some discipline, and encourages the brilliance of the lead queen bee to use her powers for good instead of evil. He makes a difference with the kids by bringing what he knows best to the room; not school learning, but plain old-fashioned street smarts. Dewey's, and by extension Black's, sheer enthusiasm makes up for his rough edges.
If only teachers were this enthusiastic about anything these days!
So Funny.......2007-06-12
We love Jack Black... my son (8 yrs. old0 loves it and it have decent humor for us too
concerned mom.......2007-05-29
This movie was is an entertaining story for pre-teens and teenagers. Although the star is somewhat flamboyant in presenting himself at times, the moral of the story, "you can do whatever you put your mind to", is well presented. It is a story of how team work and diversity of talents can be brought together for the good of everyone, if used properly.
SCHOOL OF ROCK with Jack Black!!!.......2007-04-11
Jack Black deserves more than an Academy Award for his Spectacular and Explosive Performance in

Dead Rockers Society.......2007-03-25
"School of Rock" falls squarely inside the traditional "inspiring teacher" genre of film. Yes, it's predictable, though that's not necessarily a bad thing, since it delivers on all the good feeling that one expects at the end of such a movie. Also, Jack Black is hilarious. It's just so fun to watch his mugging, dancing, wild gesturing and so forth. He is plain perfect for the part of Dewey Finn.
But what's unexpectedly wonderful about "School of Rock" is how it is also a send-up of the "inspiring teacher" film. Black is so dominant in this film (and Joan Cusack makes such a fine prep-school principal) that it's easy to miss how unexpectedly great the kids are -- how convincingly and charmingly they play from inside their stereotypes, pushing on those types -- and also how unexpectedly realistic are the parents (not to mention Black's roommate the real Ned Schneebly). Just at the moment you expect the parents to cave in and embrace "Mr. S's" unusual methods, they surprise you, and react as real parents would. The final scenes of the film thus both are and are not typical. This movie doesn't really subvert its kind, but it's constantly playing the genre just on the edge.
That's only part of what makes it wonderful

Too often, sequels to popular films simply rehash the original film; call it the carbon-copy syndrome. Grease 2 suffers from no such malady, having almost nothing to do with the original film. Sure, it focuses on teens at Rydell High, the imaginary school from the first film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. But other than a few of the teachers, all of the characters are new and so are the songs--and more's the pity. By the time Grease hit the big screen, it already had had almost a decade as a theatrical musical, more than enough time to hone its mock-rock & roll score. But this sequel, which stars among others a then-unknown Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield, and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter), has music that's neither fish nor fowl, neither rock nor Broadway. Meanwhile, the plot is a reversal of the first film, in which a cool guy fell for a square girl. In this one, the square is newcomer Caulfield, who catches the eye of tough girl Pfeiffer and her Pink Lady gang. The appearance of such pseudo-stars of the '50s, like Tab Hunter, is supposed to lend a nostalgic kick, but let's just say that Grease 2 slides almost instantly into obscurity. --Marshall Fine

The sequel to the 1978 hit movie, GREASE 2 is set in the early 1960's when a new British student, Michael Carrington (Caulfield), rides into town and joins the ranks at Rydell High. A book nerd who immediately falls for the blonde bombshell leader of the Pink Ladies, Stephanie Zinone (Pfeiffer), Michael finds himself smitten, but out of his element. Knowing that the Pink Ladies are the hippest clique of chicks at Rydell, who only date their equals in coolness - the T-Birds, Michael sets out to turn from a geek to a greaser to see if he can win the gorgeous Stephanie's heart.

Just plain TRASH.......2007-07-04
Grease 2 in my opinion was a horrible sequel. The first Grease is my all time favorite. Grease 2 will never be as good. The music sucked, and the acting was horrible. I advise all to buy The first original Grease, don't waste your money on this garbage!!!
25 years later...grease 2, not bad..........2007-06-04
the original grease will always be one of my all-time favorites. watching grease 2 after 25 years, i enjoyed the singing, dancing and storyline.
michelle p. & maxwell c. made a good couple. naturally, in seeing a few familiar rydell faces, i wished some others were still around.
anyway, the only main issue that bothered me was how the T-Birds were portrayed, they were weak.
I remember the original T-Birds being a little tougher than that.
So, I was a bit disappointed in how they were portrayed this time around...
Other than that, I enjoyed the movie...
Grease 2 slides into 4 stars.....barely.......2007-04-15
I just saw this move for the first time in wide screen and it is a much different experience I must say. I think I have figured it out. In some other reviews I think Batricia Birch should have just stayed with the songs and the numbers. I think they should have got another director to get the rest of the movie off the ground. It is somewhat of a good story. I can see why it would be reversed (a guy trying to get the girl, instead of the other way around). You see Eugine in the beginning of the movie stumbling out of the bus. Well if he were a senior in the first one then why is he in the second one???? Also Frenchie is not with the Pink Ladies at all. You see her by herself or just briefly with the other pink ladies in school. I think the chemistry between Stephanie and Michael were worked well together. The songs were written by the same people that wrote the songs for the first movie. So really the bottom line is that they should have gotten a different director altogether. I know I know it is not the first one. But sequels are usually not, but they usually have connections to the first. Grease 2 tried to accomplish with Frenchie and the Tbirds, Pink ladies and all. I am glad they were able to have Eve Arden, Sid Ceaser, plus other great actors of the 50s and 60s like Tab Hunter. Is this movie cheesy???? Yes
Is it done in less than expected direction???? Yes. Does it have good songs?? Yes (Cool Rider, Reproduction, We'll Always be Together, Girl for all Seasons/Turn Back, and Back to School). The song skits themselves are good and with the same flavor of the first one. After all Kiddies, Patricia Birch did do the choreography for both.
So, in closing, this movie made it to my DVD collection if for that reason alone. If Grease 2 is going to stink then let it reek. If it has its moments of good cute fun then let it have that. I think if you loved the first Grease then I think you should at least give this one a try.
Absolutely Horrible.......2007-04-11
As a sequel to a mega-hit movie this was a stinker. The thing I loved about the original was how it captured the late 50's with music, custumes, and attitudes and yet this sequel seemed to fall flat on it's face in all those categories. The songs are so out of place with lots of 80's ish themes being played during certain scenes. The producer couldn't even focus on one time period with the music which ranged from 50's, 60's, 70's and even 80's metal at one point. The mood and feel of the movie was wrecked by this alone, without including the fact that the songs themselves were utterly boring. One or two songs were ok, like "Reproduction" and the biker song by Michelle Pfeiffer.
If you buy this thinking it's a real sequel to Grease you are sadly mistaken. There's not alot in common at all with the first movie other then a few characters and the "T-birds" and "Pink Ladies". The plot is totally cheesy also. I'm not sure what I hated worst, the fact that some of the hairstyles and music reminded me more of the 80's or the predictable plot of the movie. "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" , "The Breakfast Club" & "Sixteen Candles" are so much better movies at representing the 80's if you are looking for a movie like that. The last thing I wish to see is a movie suposedly set in 1961 is for it to coming off in all respects to be 1982.
When I watch movies like this, I like to be transported back to a place in time and feel the period completely. Unfortunately Grease 2 leaves me wondering exactly what time period it was supposed to represent.
The only saving grace of this movie is watching a young Michelle Pfeiffer with brown eyes instead of her usual and what I thought was her natural blue eyes.
It's not Grease, it's lard!.......2007-04-07
Terrible follow up to the first movie. This movie does not hold a candle to the first classic movie staring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.
The acting is bad, and it is not worth the money.
It belongs where most grease belongs ... in a bucket under the sink.

Jack Black deserves more than an Academy Award for his Spectacular and Explosive Performance in
SCHOOL OF ROCK!!! A Must . . . for anyone who has ever worked in or attended a school.
In a School System that too often discourages all enthusiasm and passion for any subject . . .
Jack Black . . . Shows Em How!!! In Living his Passion and Truth . . . He Brings to Life . . .
All of the Kids in their different ways!!! One could say it is the Theme of THE BLUES BROTHERS
i.e. Let's Get The Band Together!!! . . . This is Another Good Time Classic . . . of Fun and Celebration of Life!!!
Phenomenal Energy and Dynamic Performance on the part of Jack Black . . . and All Character Actors including
Sarah Silverman . . . Excellent Also!!!

SLC Punk starts out entertainingly enough as a sarcastic snapshot of the punk-rock scene in Salt Lake City in 1985--complete with mohawks, moshing, and vague avowals of anarchy. But gradually, the wanderings of Stevo (Matthew Lillard from Scream) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) turn into a multilayered exploration of character and culture shock. Though he spends his days drinking and mocking the values of his parents, Stevo turns just as critical an eye on his own rhetoric and lifestyle, and comes to find that aimless rebellion may be just as hollow as the mindless pursuit of money. No character has the right point of view; there are no easy solutions. Despite lacking anything in the way of a plot, SLC Punk sustains its energy through wit, realism, propulsive editing, and excellent performances from Lillard, Goorjian, and the rest of the cast. It's emblematic of the movie's sophistication that Stevo's lawyer father (Christopher McDonald, who played Geena Davis's husband in Thelma and Louise) is treated satirically without being dismissed; though baffled by his son's form of rebellion, he never loses hope that Stevo will go on to law school and continues to cajole Stevo and argue with him about how the world works. By its end, the constantly shifting perspective of SLC Punk achieves a surprising emotional depth. It's also given a lot of energy by a well-chosen soundtrack of energetic but not overly familiar music of the time, including selections from Fear, the Dead Kennedys, the Stooges, and even Roxy Music. --Bret Fetzer

old school.......2007-04-09
this movie is a great tribioute to the old punks living in todays sosiety
A Must See.......2007-03-10
This film, no matter what age or interest, is fantastic. The acting is excellent and the story intreaging. I found myself educated by the era of music this film encompasses. Harsh times and an attitude towards society of indipendence and self security, is what this film centers around. BUY THIS FILM.
Such a True Movie!!!.......2007-03-08
Great film in all aspects. Shows many true aspects of society. Including a lot of comedy, helps make it an underground classic.
This Film Is An Underground Classic...Or It Should Be.......2007-03-02
Sometimes it occurs to me with a jolting shock that I've seen a lot of films in my life. Many of these, like this one, were with my roommate in college, who was a certified movie freak. Although I forgot about it until I recently bought it for myself, one of the movies I liked a lot back circa 1999 was SLC Punk. As it rapidly segues from hilarious to touching, tragic to gross, ultimately SLC Punk shows it has a message beneath its surface noise, and it says a lot as it unfolds. At its center SLC Punk asks the question "is buying-in always selling-out?" To translate that for the uninitiated, that means is following cultural norms always a betrayal of personal identify and youthful dreams? Stevo and his best friend "Heroin" Bob (who ironically never touches drugs and is terrified of needles) are two young men living in uber-right wing Salt Lake City during the mid-Reagan years. They do their best to be hard core punks in a time and place where that pursuit separates them from just about everyone else in their Mormon dominated society. Steveo, though, is more than he seems. Amid his binge drinking, ambushing of local rednecks, and philosophical asides on the healthiness of personal anarchy, Steveo, it turns out, is a brilliant student who has the chance to get into an Ivy League college. His father, a smooth-talking Yuppie jerk, does his best to persuade his son to accept the Harvard education open to him, even as the life Steveo believes in proclaims that path to be the ultimate in "selling out." Along the way between its memorable opening scene and its closing credits viewers of SLC Punk meet a cast of characters that includes a rebel who disguises himself as a conforming prep, a trust-fund Eurotrash psychopath, a hippie Wiccan woman, and, well...one case of skin infection so bizarre it even stumps medical science. SLC Punk is worth seeing, owning, and heck, even spending ten minutes reviewing on Amazon.com. So go get it. Go get it now.
Fun........2007-02-27
It's not the best understanding of Punk or the political theory of anarchism, but it does represent how alot of people see it.You may not even agree with the story, but it is honest...and fun.I really liked the ADD editing and the use of cool tones in the beginning, then warm, then back to cool. The description will tell you all you need to know really.

Amazon.com essential video

Like, radical, dude--but not nearly as funny as it should be, even though it was a box-office hit. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are a pair of dim Valley boys, whose life is made heinous by a school history project. Enter George Carlin as a futuristic dude with a time-traveling phone booth. So Bill and Ted go back in time to round up a gang of historical figures (Socrates, Joan of Arc) to bring back for their presentation. Abe Lincoln at the mall? That's about as witty as it gets, rendering this the kind of comedy that gives teenaged audiences a bad name. --Marshall Fine
Description
Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Alex Winter (The Lost Boys) deliver "spirited performances" (The Hollywood Reporter) in the original righteous comedy about the two ditzy dudes from San Dimas, California. Also starring George Carlin, this hysterically funny historical comedy is a "snappily directed" (Time), "bouncy good time" (The Boston Globe) and a party that goes on and on! Bill (Winter) and Ted (Reeves) have spent so much time forming their rock band, The Wyld Stallyns, that they're flunking history. Whoa, duuuude! And when Ted's dad threatens to send him away to military school, Bill and Ted realize it could mean the most heinous end of The Stallyns! Luckily, a guardian angel from the future, Rufus (Carlin), has come to them with a most bodacious solution: a time-traversing phone booth to take them into the past to learn about the world from some of history's most influential personalities. Their journey through time turns out to be a blastÂ...but will they learn enough to pass their class?

I always liked it..........2007-05-16
I'm not sure I understand why a few people here seem to be upset that a) the two main characters are totally moronic and goofy. They're -supposed- to be. They're supposed to be the type of kids you laughed at in school because they were just such losers (but hey, loveable anyway)
b) That's not what would 'really' happen if such characters from history met! Of course it isn't! This movie wasn't made to be a history lesson any more than 300 was. It's supposed to be all out silly. I suppose if you can't let yourself just be silly a while, you won't enjoy the movie.
That being said, I think it -does- help if you grew up with the movie (I first saw it when I was 8 or 9 I think... ) and know the nostalgia behind such phrases as ' radical dude' and all that really awful 80's Valley Slang. Watching it now, almost 20 years later, it's even more amusing because I remember my friends and I thinking Bill and Ted were awesome and copied them using such words as 'Bogus' and whatever. Kids of a newer generation or people that weren't really growing up in that era might not find it so charming or a trip down pleasant childhood lane... but hey, for those of us who did grow up with it, most everyone I know loves the movie for what it was. Stupid, silly, entertaining.
Plus the part where they introduce Ghengis Khan as Bob Genghis Khan always made me laugh.
A true classic.......2007-05-13
I can't get enough of this film...I still laugh throughout the film to this day...ziggy piggy ziggy piggy LMAO! I can't imagine why anyone would rate this below 4 stars. It's an 80's classic that hopefully someday I can share with my children if I have any in the future.

I have been looking for this DVD for a long time. Thanks for having it and shipping it overseas.

I bought this for my daughter for her 13th birthday. It's better than I remember. She did not appreciate many of the references to the 1980's, but liked the movie.

Spike Lee's follow-up to his unlikely hit She's Gotta Have It was this ambitious--some would say too ambitious--attempt at a musical about college life. But Lee, ever the provocateur, doesn't settle for a simple college comedy. Rather, he wants to make a point about the social divisions within all-black colleges: between the socializers and the socially conscious, and between light and dark-skinned blacks. Laurence Fishburne plays a politically aware student trying to bring his fellow students together; Giancarlo Esposito plays the fraternity boss who constantly seeks to insert a wedge between the haves and have-nots. Lee himself plays a pawn in the middle, a would-be frat boy undergoing a wicked Hell Week as a pledge. The story doesn't pull together and the musical numbers--more spoof than anything else--only serve to fragment it. While it offers interesting points, it never does so in a particularly cohesive way. --Marshall Fine

A+.......2007-06-17
This is Spike's magnus opus. Over the top? Sure...Heavy handed? You bet...Preachy? Of course...none of that changes the fact that Spike makes a powerful statement about the continuing conflict Africans in America have with each other. 'Bamboozled' is a close second...'Do the Right Thing' rounds out the top 3. Love him or hate him, Spike leaves you with something relevant to ponder...isn't that what art is supposed to do?
A BLAST FROM THE PAST!.......2007-05-14
I love this movie. Everytime I watch it, it brings back memories of my college days. Having attended a Historically Black College during the 80's, the movie depicted the realities of our campus life. I laugh, I cry, I reflect on days gone by. Thank you Spike Lee... YO!
Another Great Spike Joint.......2007-04-10
This is Spike Lee's second full length movie. It isn't My favorite but it is still a great movie for anyone that wants to get a small notion of what black college life is/was like. I recommend this movie for all spike lee fans or just fans of a good movie with a great message.
One of my favorite films of all time!!!.......2007-02-09
This is an excellent film. A lot of the topics that were discussed in this film still happen at HBCU's!!!! As a matter of fact, the issue of lightskinned vs. darkskinned is still going on today, on a college campus or not. Spike Lee to me is one of the best film directors of all time. He is not afraid to tackle issues that are in the African American community. I highly recommend this film. If you haven't seen it, get the DVD. It's a classic.

Description
Directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita, LINDA LINDA LINDA depicts the musical and personal dramas of an all-girl high school rock band and has played to critical acclaim at more than 40 major international film festivals. The film notably offers a soundtrack by ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and a cameo by punk rock legends The Ramones.
The DVD release includes a new audio commentary by noted film critic and Japanese pop culture journalist Patrick Macias. LINDA LINDA LINDA was originally released in 2005 and follows an all-girl high school rock band after an untimely break-up. Only three days before their high school festival, guitarist Kei (Yu Kashii), drummer Kyoto (Aki Maeda of Battle Royale), and bassist Nozumi (Shiori Sekine) must recruit a new lead vocalist for their band. They choose an unlikely Korean exchange student Son (Doona Bae of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance), even though her comprehension of Japanese is a bit rough! It's a race against time as the group struggles to learn three tunes for the festival's rock concert -- including a classic '80s punk-pop song by the famous Japanese group The Blue Hearts called "Linda Linda."
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievably dull.......2007-06-27
The only people who could honestly say that they related to this static, dull and poorly written film are Japanese girls who've recently graduated high school. And I lived and taught in Japan...the distributors stooped so low as to say on the cover that the film had been ENTERED into several film festivals, but no mention of winning anything. How low will these people go?
Linda Linda, Linda Linda Lindaaaa!.......2007-06-15
"Don't tell us that when we are no longer kids, we grow up. When we grow up, we won't quit being kids. Where are the real we? Should the real we be here? We've only got a little more time to be the real us. ... We won't end here. It is not wrong to expect a miracle. We won't let our high school days become a memory. Is this wind the same as the one blowing the day after tomorrow? Will and courage will be kept in the same pocket. This is our kingdom. 2004 Shiba High Holly Festival."
That message spoken by a student of Shibazaki High School, has a twinge of poignancy. Second year in high school is indeed the last time high school students have fun. After that, they have to study like crazy for college entrance exams, to become adults in the real world.
At the school festival, "bunkasai" for those in the know, four girls want to do a band, but their guitarist Moe injures herself. An argument between keyboardist Kei and Rinko, both of who are short-tempered, results in the latter departing. The band, minus Moe and Rinko, consists of drummer Kyoko, shy bassist Nozomi, and Kei, now on guitar.
However, without Moe-chan, they can't write their own songs, nor have a lead singer, so they have to go the cover band route. Upon hearing 80's punk band the Blue Hearts' "Linda Linda", they decide to do three songs, that one, "My Right Hand," and the angst-ridden, but overall refreshing "Endless Song."
On an irresponsible whim and mostly to spite Rinko, Kei recruits Son, a painfully shy Korean exchange student whose grasp at Japanese is manageable at best. She is at first horrified to realize what she has talked herself into, but decides to do it, becoming chummy with her new friends. Most of the best scenes involve her, such as when she and Kei talk at the bus stop. Son's problems in understanding a karaoke place where she has to buy a drink to sing poses a humorous situation, as she wants to sing and not drink, but the clerk tells her she has to buy a drink. And she's just wonderful when she strolls out on the abandoned festival grounds, verbally imagining the scene, passing by the booths, then going on stage, and introducing the band. Heck, one boy even confesses his feelings for her, trying to speak good Korean.
Kyoko, the drummer, is doing double duty helping out with a banana stand for the culture fest. But she's also the most diplomatic and friendly, concerned about her fellow members as well as trying not to let her friends be put down. And she seems to have feelings for the shy and awkward Kazuya. Aki Maeda was a wonderful choice to play the lovable and friendly Kyoko.
It's enjoyable seeing the quartet practicing for their gig, hanging out with each other, and sharing this wonderful time together, even in a scene when they sneak into the band room at night, quietly singing and playing quietly so as not to get caught.
This is a interesting departure for Bae Du Na, having appeared in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and the Ring Virus. She is lovable and credible as Son.
I saw this movie on the plane coming back from Japan to America, and I loved every minute of it, anything for one last drop of Japanese culture. It helped me make up my mind to go back to Japan one day. Thanks, girls. And ex-Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha's moody but reflective keyboard music score is perfect!
Trivia: the name of the Jitterin' Jinn song about the upside down giraffe that cracks Kei up is "Purezento" or "Present."
After high school, comes the beginning of the students' wonderful endless song, per the Blue Hearts: "Let's sing a endless song, for this a--hole of a world/Lets sing a endless song, for all the trash out there/Let's sing a endless song, for me, and you, and them out there/Let's sing a endless song, so that we can all laugh tomorrow."
My mom made jelly.......2007-06-15
Back in 2004 Yaguchi Shinobu's film Swing Girls was released to national acclaim in Japan and eventually led the 12 girls, and one boy to stardom and eventually to the release of a couple of albums of their music, including a performance in New York. In 2005, Yamashita Nobuhiro created Linda Linda Linda named after the song "Linda Linda" by The Blue Hearts. Like the previous film, an album was compiled of the music performed by the actresses. However, unlike the previous films which mainly used unknown actresses, Linda Linda Linda uses the popular Korean actress Bae Du-na, whose character suffered a very unfortunate fate in Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, for vocals, Base Ball Bear's bassist Sekine Shiori for bass, Maeda Aki, famous for her role as Noriko in Battle Royale, and actress Kashii Yu for guitar. While this mix might seem a bit odd at first, it comes off as quite effective in the end. Sekine's skill with her instrument is readily evident.
The film itself is quite simple. Kei (Kashii) and Kyoko (Maeda), and Nozomi (Sekine) along with their friends Moe and Rinko are planning to perform some original songs for the school festival, but after Moe, the guitarist/vocalist, injures her finger, Kei and Rinko have a falling out and Kei, Kyoko, and Nozomi are left without a vocalist and guitarist. Kei decides that she will play the guitar, but they are still in need of a vocalist. Determined to keep the band going out of a desire to play and spite towards Rinko, Kei asks Son (Bae), a Korean exchange student with a shaky grasp on the Japanese language to be the bassist in a quite humorous scene, and so begins the girls' quest to perform three songs by the Blue Hearts during the school festival, but with only three days to prepare, how successful can there be?
One of the most charming features of Linda Linda Linda is the bind of friendship that the girls share, particularly the Bae Du-na in the role of Son. Although limited in her words because of language restrictions, Son is definitely the most outgoing member of the group. Besides a little stage fright, she is the one most willing to confront difficulties, such as the band's obstacles and a boy who shows interesting her. She might in fact appear quite blunt at times, but this aspect of her character is often an attribute that Japanese see in Koreans as a whole. Whereas the Japanese are a bit more guarded showing emotions, affection, etc. in public, Koreans, supposedly are much more open with their feelings. It is believed that this aspect portrayed in Korean dramas and films is one reason why they are so popular in Japan. Sekine's character Nozomi is the quietest and shyest member of the group, but being the big sister of a large family, her maturity level is higher than the other girls. In one scene within a supermarket, Nozomi's authority is displayed and it becomes apparent that her word is law in a few scenes. Kashii and Maeda's characters are a bit more stereotypical, but they also do good jobs in their performances.
I watched this film twice over the last couple of days because the first time I watched it I wrote it off as nothing but fluff. However, after some consideration, I decided to watch it again to see if I could appreciate it more. As I mentioned above, the biggest accomplishment is how Bae's character was handled, but also I found some of the film work to be quite well done. The scene in which Maeda walks down the school's hallway near the beginning of the film is truly great. Also, the music is quite good. Not only is the viewer treated to a number of Blue Hearts songs, both originals and covers, but the originals by former Smashing Pumpkins member James Iha are also quite good. Not a spectacular film by any means, Linda Linda Linda, however, is beyond most films that would be given the term "teen flicks"
Amusing and Touching: Calling Up Memories of My Younger Days.......2007-06-04
Japanese indie film "Linda Linda Linda" follows the story of four high school girls who need to learn to play the songs of the Blue Hearts, 80s Japanese punk rock band, for the annual school festival. They got only three days to practice, and the vocal happens to be an international student from Korea. But can they master the songs and play them in front of the audiences?
The story is simple. As two girls recently left the group, three remaining members of the band Kyoko (Aki Maeda, "Battle Royale"), Kei (Yu Kashii) and Nozomi (Shiori Sekine) have to find a vocalist for the new band. They recruit a timid Korean exchange student Son (Du-na Bae, "The Host"), who, as it turns out, shows unexpected side of her character as she keeps practicing.
[SLOW-MOVING BUT TOUCHING] First, keep this in mind before watching "Linda Linda Linda" of which mood is something different from such films as, say, "School of Rock" or "Hard Day's Night" (both my favorite films). The catchy Blue Hearts songs are wonderful and the rock concert scenes are full of energy, but the greatness of director Nobuhiro Yamashita is that he not only succeeded in expressing the youthful energy of high school girls, but also cleverly suggesting that the girls are leaving behind their younger days though they themselves are not aware of it.
To fully enjoy "Linda Linda Linda," please remember these things. Annual high school festivals (usually called "bunka-sai" in Japanese) are usually held in autumn and the girls are in the third (and last) year of high school. That means this is their final chance to join in the bunka-sai of their school. Son will go back to her country and most probably they will not play together again. Yamashita inserts several episodes or images that imply the festival (or the sweet, joyful days of youth) is going to be over soon - the images of deserted schoolyard or one of the girl's ex-boyfriend leaving the town, for instance. Only grown-ups around the girls know this fact (listen carefully the words from the teacher), but the girls themselves do not seem to realize this, or even if they do, they don't understand the meaning of it ... until long after their youth is past.
The film deftly captures the atmosphere of high school festivals in Japan. I can assure you the authenticity of each scene of the film because I was once a high school student there. So much time and efforts are put into "bunka-sai": classrooms are turned into shops selling noodles, ice cream stand, rock music club or "haunted house." It is precious moment of life, which becomes part of bitter-sweet memories of youth only after you realize you have left it behind forever.
The acting is uniformly great, especially the brilliant performance from Du-na Bae as Son, who is to be seen in "The Host," a 2006 mega-hit in South Korea. In fact she might be a bit too old to play the role Son (Du-na Bae was about 25 years-old at the time of shooting), but her spontaneous and lively performance makes us forget that. The film is also benefited from the authentic location as it was shot in the real, now disused building of Maebashi Industrial High School in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, which had recently moved to another location.
"Linda Linda Linda" uses a slightly downbeat approach in telling the story, avoiding the cliched plot devices. It is sometimes slow-moving, but in moving slowly, it shows a realistic portrait of high school life in Japan. Wherever you are, you will see it is an amusing and touching film that captures the essence of youth.
Charming Japanese art film.......2007-06-02
This is a rather artsy, deliberate, even slow-moving film about a highschool rock band giving its final farewell before graduation. When the band's two core members have a falling out, a new girl is brought in, a gangly, goofy Korean exchange student who nonetheless has the same rock'n'roll fantasy life as kids all across the globe, and turns out to be a perfect match for the other girls... The film follows the four young musicians as they frantically rehearse for a student-run show -- what's charming about the film (besides the girls, who all give striking, subdued performances) is that it's not a "coming of age" story, but rather it really is just about the creative process of kids being in a band, how different personalities are thrown together in the service of a song... and how much fun it can be when you finally find your audience. Not the greatest film ever, but it'll draw you in.
