This is a very good 2-disc DVD set. These 3 WWII films cover both the CBI and European theatres of war. OBJECTIVE BURMA and GO FOR BROKE focus more on the basic American fighting man while NEVER SO FEW lends its perspective to daring and theatrical heroics. Yet all 3 films never lose focus of the human element and the morality of what happens in war. Frank Sinatra's character makes this very clear in NEVER SO FEW making that film more than just a great action war film.

OBJECTIVE, BURMA! is a first rate quality production and I think one of Errol Flynn's best films. I think Errol Flynn's perception as a good actor was greatly undermined by the very transcendence of his good looks and screen presence. In OBJECTIVE BURMA Errol Flynn rises far beyond those attributes and gives a very credible and sincere performance and his performance is one of the many strengths of this film.
Paratroop Major Nelson (Errol Flynn) leads his men into Burma to destroy a Japanese jungle outpost. What makes this film so intriguing is the human cost and life struggle to enter the Burmese jungle, accomplish the mission and return to safety. This is a hard-nosed action drama filled with a lot of emotion and sentiment. Under Raoul Walsh's brilliant direction war is not a thing comprised of glory but one of sacrifice and endurance. Henry Hull as the aged journalist Mark Williams gives a truly endearing performance and brings Walsh's message vividly photographed by James Wong Howe to fruition.
In terms of Hollywood's standards this is a very realistic WWII film. The script and dialogue by Ranald MacDougall and Lester Cole are very effective and detailed to the man. Very realistic Art designs by Ted Smith and Sets by designer Jack McConaghy combined with Cinematographer James Wong Howe's outstanding and deeply textured images are so convincing that you become entrenched in and overwhelmed by the Burmese jungle and all the dangers and death that it holds. Franz Waxman also composed one of his best scores. The cast including James Brown, William Prince, George Tobias, Mark Stevens, Anthony Caruso and Hugh Beaumont is excellent. This is an outstanding film.

GO FOR BROKE! This is a very entertaining film directed by Robert Pirosh about the formation of the WWII 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Based on factual events and what makes it unique is that the 442 was made up of Japanese-American volunteers who served in the European, essentially Italy and France, theater of battle. Van Johnson, giving one of his best performances, portrays Lt. Mike Grayson in charge of a platoon of these troops. Van Johnson as Lt. Grayson carries as much prejudice against Japanese-Americans as did the rest of the country at that point in the war. The film appears true to its subject depicting prejudice and resentment from both sides of the issue. The combat scenes have a sense of reality about them never losing sight of the horrors of war. The photography by Paul C. Vogel and detailed sets by Cedric Gibbons and Eddie Imazu enhance this point. However, this film does run the gamut of emotions and the camaraderie of the Japanese-American soldiers developed along side Van Johnson's Lt. Grayson is extremely well conveyed and is a high point of this film. This is a very good film, somehow forgotten and deserves to be seen and stand along side other essential WWII films.

NEVER SO FEW is a very entertaining WWII hardnosed action adventure film again set in Burma with great characters, dialogue, camaraderie and Steve McQueen as Ringa. The outstanding cast includes Frank Sinatra, Richard Johnson, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Lawford, Charles Bronson, Brian Donlevy, Dean Jones, Paul Henreid, George Takei and Whit Bissell. Steve McQueen almost steals this film away from Frank Sinatra. However, the worldly Sinatra leading a guerilla force, battling the enemy well as his superiors (Brian Donlevy) and having time to romance Gina Lollobrigida demonstrates a strong sense of charm, righteousness and an ability to show off just how good an actor he really was.
Director John Sturges really new how to tell a story with strong individuals giving each character a sense of depth, believability and distinct charisma. Composer Hugo Friedhofer was very adept at scoring WWII films capturing the drive of the combatants juxtaposed with the horrors of the conflict. The one actor that seems to have gone unrecognized in this film is the very British Richard Johnson. In the earlier scenes in the film he was Frank Sinatra's drinking partner and his second in command. Johnson gives a very colorful and convincing performance and the camaraderie between him and Sinatra looks incredibly natural. It is this camaraderie that is the springboard for all the interwoven characters in this film and really enhances Steve McQueen's introduction as Ringa and the rest is film history.

History is written by the victor. Schools rarely teach the Japanese-American experience during World War II in America, and what little they do teach is often shallow and simplistic. This video features interviews with Japanese-American veterans who fought in Europe and Asia during World War II, who freed Americans units trapped by Germans in Italy as well as freeing Jews held in Concentrations camps while there families were held in relocations camps in America. An excellent historical video not to be missed or overlooked.

This is a very good film directed by Robert Pirosh, who scripted HELL IS FOR HEROES with Steve McQueen, about Japanese-American GIs in WWII trained and assigned to fight in Europe during the war. Taught and brilliantly acted and executed this is one of the best war films to come out of that era. It depicts and addresses many of the social issues of Japanese-Americans detained unjustly but given a chance to prove themselves as loyal Americans but more importantly as men of honor defending their country be the politics right or wrong. A good one all around.

I saw this dvd and thought it was a bargain .... Was I wrong. It contains 3 great films all spoilt by the worst transfer I have ever seen. The picture is far worse than the vhs I have and it also keeps freezing and pixelating. I have the reg 2 version of Immortal battalion and it is a fantastic transfer. Avoid this dvd at all costs.

It was an immortal squad but it is immortal

There is a lot more depth to this movie than you would expect. Yes it is a propaganda movie. But it portrayed the beginning of the breakdown of the class system in England. David Nine plays a junior officer than was from a civilian brigade and now must learn to get along with his Sargent and men. He goes from aloofness to comrade by the end of the movie. There is plenty of action as the troop transport that the are on gets torpedoed. And they even get to fix bayonets.

Definetly worth the money, especially if you are a David Niven fan. A good group of films that show the WWII mentality of the times. A good DVD to add to your collection.

I actually rented this movie, and from seeing who was in the movie caught my curiousity. Now i have seen other movies on curiousity as well and many i have regretted. But, this one wasn't bad at all. It takes a couple of spoofs on "Pulp Fiction"
and has the same feel, but with a ghetto twist on it. And at times the story is very unbelievable, where you would probably say they should have done this with that character instead of what the director, and screenwriter did with some of the characters. But, what do you expect for a straight to video release. 9 times out of 10 these end up being the best movies. So i try t keep an open mind and give new, unheard movies a chance. You may never know.

5 out of 5 stars A fine prequel to another film.......2007-03-02

A BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK made me curious about the Hollywood take of the Japanese-American GI experience of World War II. That curiosity led directly to this film which was also produced by Dore Schary. It's a remarkably satisfying prequel to the later film that I reccommend highly for its rich characterization, and the fine demonstration of ensemble-storytelling presented by writer/director Robert Pirosh. Despite the absence of special features, this one absolutely rocks! I was deeply moved by the most unobtrusive, naturalistic, gentle propaganda I've ever had the priviledge and pleasure to watch.

This highly underrated film should be required viewing for any high school & University student. This film shows the two sides of the coin of life. Life is neither heads or tails, it is both. The film is about the US 442nd regiment combat team in WW2. The Japanese-American platoon had to fight both the Germans & the racial prejidices of their fellow GI's. Lieutenant Mike Grayson-Van Johnson trains the men, but does so very unwillingly. Soon during their campaigns in Italy & France in 1943-44, he develops a great admiration for the Japanese-Americans. The depth of their sacrifice & heroic strength-"Go For Broke motto," prove to him that they are both great soldiers & Americans. To the present day they remain the most decorated unit in the history of the US military. The acting by all was good throughout. The only negatives of the film are that the battle scenes seem somewhat unrealistic & it could have been a bit longer.

This is a very good film directed by Robert Pirosh, who scripted HELL IS FOR HEROES with Steve McQueen, about Japanese-American GIs in WWII trained and assigned to fight in Europe during the war. Taught and brilliantly acted and executed this is one of the best war films to come out of that era. It depicts and addresses many of the social issues of Japanese-Americans detained unjustly but given a chance to prove themselves as loyal Americans but more importantly as men of honor defending their country be the politics right or wrong. A good one all around.

GO FOR BROKE! This is a very entertaining film directed by Robert Pirosh about the formation of the WWII 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Based on factual events and what makes it unique is that the 442 was made up of Japanese-American volunteers who served in the European, essentially Italy and France, theater of battle. Van Johnson, giving one of his best performances, portrays Lt. Mike Grayson in charge of a platoon of these troops. Van Johnson as Lt. Grayson carries as much prejudice against Japanese-Americans as did the rest of the country at that point in the war. The film appears true to its subject depicting prejudice and resentment from both sides of the issue. The combat scenes have a sense of reality about them never losing sight of the horrors of war. The photography by Paul C. Vogel and detailed sets by Cedric Gibbons and Eddie Imazu enhance this point. However, this film does run the gamut of emotions and the camaraderie of the Japanese-American soldiers developed along side Van Johnson's Lt. Grayson is extremely well conveyed and is a high point of this film. This is a very good film, somehow forgotten and deserves to be seen and stand along side other essential WWII films.

I like old western and WWII movies. I was delighted when this one was put out on DVD. My VHS is wore out. It is funny and serious. My favorite actor in this movie is Henry Nakamura. He is a terrific actor and I enjoyed him in a great western also. If you like westerns, please view "Westward The Women". It is a great old western.

        I've been looking for a decent transfer of THE BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN and finally found this DVD. The colors are beautiful and there is hardly a scratch or hole in the print to be seen. The audio is Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, a bit flat but completely clear. Finally, the film is presented in the original 2.35:1 letterbox format and NOT in 1.33:1 full screen.

        Not only does it contain EL ALAMEIN, but also contains the 1951 MGM picture GO FOR BROKE! starring Van Johnson. It looks and sounds pretty good, but not as good as EL ALAMEIN did. Both films contain a 6-chapter search feature.

        Both films are excellent and this is definitely worth buying.

        Just bought this for my husband's birthday... he loved the two films... he teaches history and is an NUT. I found them very enjoyable also, surprisingly. Go For Broke is the story of the 442nd Regiment... a group of GI's who were of Japanese descent. They were sent to Europe in WWII to fight the Nazi's... the story revolves around their battles and the drama of the interaction with "white" US combat units.

        The Battle of El Alamein was a real treat. It is in Letterbox format, and unlike Go For Broke is in color... which is absolutely striking. The film is dubbed but is very interesting in that it tells the story of combat in the North African desert - FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE ITALIANS!!!

        Marengo did a great job on these films and if you like war movies I highly recommend this double feature.
