Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Can a buddy-cop parody still qualify as a good buddy-cop movie? Showtime struggles to prove it's possible, and with a few solid laughs it almost succeeds. No movie starring Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro could be a total turkey, and their pairing--as (respectively) a brash patrol cop/wannabe actor and a seasoned detective with zero tolerance for showmanship--yields a few choice moments of slick, professional comedy. Still, most of Showtime represents a missed opportunity, squandering Rene Russo's talent as a TV producer who casts Murphy and De Niro in a buddy-cop reality show that turns them into overnight celebrities. In an effort to repeat the modest success of Shanghai Noon, director Tom Dey capitalizes on the casual chemistry of his leads (especially Murphy, who outshines his costars) until parody succumbs to routine action involving big guns and bad guys. With a sharper sense of satire, this passable entertainment could have been a comedy juggernaut. --Jeff Shannon

Excellent.......2007-06-30
Entertaining, top marks for the novelty concept, excellent cast, superbly made. One of the best TV shows I've seen in years. This one will keep your interest, and leave you wanting more. Watching each episode for the second time is usually even more entertaining.
The books on which the series is based (Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter ), not so hot, imho.
Brilliant show! Michael C. Hall is a real talent........2007-06-21
I was a big Six Feet Under fan and was anxious to see what Michael C. Hall's next project was going to be. Dexter is a fitting follow up to showcase Hall's brilliant acting skills. He manages to make the impossible possible by giving a serial killer likable qualities that create a sympathy for his "hobby." We've all seen the worst of the worst escape justice and hoped they would get theirs in the end. Dexter feeds that dark place that wishes the guilty who are acquitted get what's coming to them. The ice truck killer plot was just mind blowing and I didn't see the ending coming. This series is amazing and would be a killer addition to your DVD collection. (Insert collective groan...sorry!)
I ordered showtime JUST for Dexter!.......2007-06-20
I absolutely loved this series. VERY original, and entertaining. I got a subscription to showtime just for this series, cancelled it when the season was over.
Do yourself a favor- Watch the series AND read the books. I love both! .......2007-06-15
This is absolutely one of the most original series around. No surprise there because Dexter first appeared in book form (see link below). If someone had told me I would be riveted by a book written from the viewpoint of a serial killer, well...I would never believe it. But Dexter was almost...loveable and he has a certain morality, believe it or not.
The series is different but I found it equally intriguing and quirky.
I was pleased that some of what had attracted me to the books managed to get on screen as well, including Dexter's unique humor and a certain presence that resonates from page to film. That pleased me. What is most amazing to me is how this series actually reverberated emotionally and touched my life in ways I never believed possible, considering the focus of the series.
This could have been a flop. It was a brave move to put something like this on the air and I feared (before I saw the first episode) that the depth and complexity of Dexter, hiding beneath that slick, seemingly inhuman surface, would be lost. But my fears were groundless, thank goodnes.
Dearly Devoted Dexter
Dexter in the Dark: A Novel
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Best show on TV hands down.......2007-06-14
I never even heard of this show until my stepdad recieved it from showtime as an emmy screener. This show is the best written show I have seen in years, not to mention the brilliant concept in itself. What is most seductive about this show is how much empathy Dexter can actually make the viewer feel. You find justification in everything that is his curse. I have gotten many of my friends and family hooked on this show and can't wait til October for season 2.

The third season of Showtime's The L Word is all about transitions. The season opens with Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey) coping with her between-seasons break-up with Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels), who is herself headed for an even heavier series of transitions. Kit Porter (Pam Grier) both falls in love with a younger man and discovers she is going through menopause. Shane (Katherine Moennig), who spent much of the first two seasons of the show hopping from bed to bed, finds herself more or less committed to Latina deejay Carmen (Sarah Shahi). And the second season's resident villain, Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley), becomes embroiled in a sexual harassment case that leaves her ultimately looking like the victim. As with previous seasons, The L Word gets all hot and bothered with various seductions filmed to sometimes jarring music on the soundtrack, but it's the day-to-day foibles and celebrations of Los Angeles's lesbian community that keep the show interesting. Newcomer Moira/Max (Daniela Sea) begins the process of gender reassignment, making for some curious situations with potential employers. Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) begin to drift apart when Tina lands a big movie studio job and starts feeling attracted to men, leading to a custody battle over their baby daughter. Where The L Word starts getting preachy and obvious is in the opening flashback sequences. When these vignettes refer to current characters of the show, they make sense; when they depict situations meant to underline how queer identity has evolved over the years, they seem politically overloaded. The L Word works intelligently through its characters' concerns without having to resort to such direct appeals for tolerance. Its strength isn't in making lesbian culture appear more mainstream, but in making us care and identify with these women's struggles, regardless of our sexual orientation. --Ryan Boudinot

Season Great - DVDs a little questionable.......2007-06-27
Not too long ago I purchased L Word Season 3, since my on-demand service no longer offered it. About a week after I received them, I watched them. At one point in my viewing process I had to stop the movie to do something. Lo and behold, when I come back and press play, it won't allow me to play from the same episode that I was watching. I tried to go to the next episode on the disc and it just stopped. I guess there is a coding issue with the discs, which I also read on another person's review. In order to watch the subsequent episode from the first one I have to select "play all" and fast forward through the first episode until it gets to the credits, and then press play. Once I mastered this process, I was able to enjoy my purchase. It's a bit of a headache, but it's worth it for this series.
Dylena lover.......2007-06-18
Wish they had nor off camera behind the scenes stuff about the cast.
The sexiest and saddest season.......2007-06-03
This season kept you guessing. Losing a character was a shocker...
Best Drama Series Ever.......2007-05-25
If you have not yet experienced the pleasures of the L Word, do yourself a favour and grab this DVD set (actually start with season 1) and lock yourself away for an entire week end in your bedroom. Turn off your mobile phone and lock all your doors, you will not be disappointed.

Drama ruled in a big way on the third season of Queer as Folk, as the gay men and women of Pittsburgh rode a roller coaster of emotional and personal upheavals that would make a regular soap-opera cast blanch. Budding comic book artist Justin (Randy Harrison) finally left longtime lover Brian for a chance at ecstasy--and not a bit of agony--with a charming violin player. Emmett (Peter Paige) finally came face-to-face with his affection for friend Ted (Scott Lowell), only to have Ted's growing drug habit get in the way of their happiness. Lesbians Melanie (Michelle Clunie) and Lindsay (Thea Gill) decided to have another baby, whose father would be... Michael (Hal Sparks), whose nesting with hunky Ben (Robert Gant) is rudely interrupted by runaway Hunter (Harris Allan). And as for Brian (Gale Harold), the man everybody wants but can't ever have? Just when it seems he's gone to work for the enemy--a homophobic mayoral candidate--it turns out he might be the savior the Pittsburgh gay community never knew it needed.
Snaps to the makers of QAF for trying to bring their characters into the grown-up world - Michael, Emmett, and Ted started their own businesses; Justin finally cut loose from Brian--but too many melodramatic plot twists and turns impeded a lot of the character development this show worked hard at during its first two seasons. Still, most of the cast was topnotch, including Harrison, whose Justin finally came into his own, and the always dependable Harold, who made Brian a fascinating creature through all his steamy travails and over-the-top encounters. --Mark Englehart

True to life. It's how it is and how it should be. I LOVE this show!
Wish I could give 4.5 stars..Not 4 and not 5.......2007-06-11
While I liked the season for some reason it didn't have the magic of season 1 and 2.
Queer as Folk-Season Three.......2007-05-31
This season was very entertaining because it involved a lot of great story lines. The drama causes you to just want to stay home and watch all 14 episodes. If you are a fan of the first 2 seasons, I think you should definitely buy Season 3.
Better than they said at the time.......2007-05-29
Although this was the season US audiences didn't like - ratings and reviews dipped - it works much better than it seemed to at the time; old character certainties crumbled, which audiences can find unsettling.
Seemingly the darkest of the five series, it marks a turning point in the group of Seasons and - while still lots of sex and commedy when required - sees the characters develop more fully.
Great.......2007-05-21
I bought this product to help me reasearch the gay lifestyle for a character that I am thinking about for a story that I am writing and this straight person loved it. I do admit the sex and bar scenes were alitte to muchl but the characters and story lines were interesting.

Four years after Showtime made gay men the focus of its original series Queer as Folk, it was time for a little turnabout with The L Word (bad title, great show). Centering around a tight-knit group of lesbians in Los Angeles, this drama was far removed from its working-class male counterpart in both style and content. While the men of QAF enjoyed a fabulous if melodramatic life on the middle-class streets of Pittsburgh, the women of The L Word lived it up in sunny California, with gorgeous houses, glamorous careers, and sexy wardrobes. Ironically, though, The L Word adhered more to the everyday drama of ensemble shows like thirtysomething than the soap opera antics of QAF, and the results were surprisingly heartfelt and effective, appropriately stylish but never over the top. There was plenty of room for titillation, but creator Ilene Chaiken fashioned from the start a show centered on characters and not just sex, aiming for the heart rather than... well, other places.
The L Word focused primarily on committed couple Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman), a former power-career duo who've decided to have a baby; however, artificial insemination and the changing dynamics of their relationship throw their previously happy existence off-kilter. Within their orbit are spunky journalist Alice (Leisha Hailey), sultry hairdresser Shane (Katherine Moenning), closeted pro tennis player Dana (Erin Daniels), and espresso bar owner Marina (Karina Lombard) who, in the show's most polarizing storyline, bedded the seemingly straight Jenny (Mia Kirschner) and shook up her heterosexual world. Jenny's am-I-straight-or-not? kvetching frustrated both her fiancé (Eric Mabius) and many viewers, who were alternately irritated and intrigued by her inability to decide one way or the other. But Jenny's weakness was part of The L Word's strength: in exploring many sides of many issues, both domestic and political, it never came up with an easy answer for any of them, making the show all that more fascinating--and compulsively watchable. --Mark Englehart

Couldn't get any better at this price!.......2007-06-01
Ah, the fond memories of the first season of the "L Word". I watched it again, this time without the commercials and enjoyed the fond memories of the first season. Of course, at this price, you cannot go wrong. This is the MAIN reason for my buying the first season. Otherwise, I was going to wait until I had enough money to buy seasons 1-3 all at once -- which wasn't going to happen any time soon. (Seasons 1-3 for the price of one is not a bad deal either!).
The L Word rocks, and hopefully the next season (5th) will be worth watching. Even though the 4th season left something to be desired, I still enjoyed seeing my girls back ...
And the reference to the war and the effects it has on people was an important part of the storyline this past season.
The L Word-Lively!.......2007-05-02
How many stars can I give a show that truly changes your life? This show is inspiring, brave, emotional, truthful, relatable, and so much more! And this is just the first season. This show has just finished its fourth season.. it's THAT popular. Yes, it is a show that lesbians can relate to but it's so much more than that. Everyone, no matter what you're sexual orientation, can relate to the characters and situations on this show. Here's a review of the characters:
Alice-My absolute favorite character. The most believable and real person on the cast, she's witty, beautiful, and doesn't care what people think. While showing her typical, sarcastic personality, you'll see her struggle with needing stability and just wanting to be loved.
Shane-The one that real lesbians can't get enough of. She's not an emotional chick (although that will change with every season) but she's deep. She doesn't like to be in a relationship and won't even spend the night with a girl.
Dana-The semi-in-the-closet dork. LOVE her! She's a pro tennis player and doesn't want the public to know. She falls for a chef (who at first doesn't know is a lesbian or not) and eventually can't hide her love for her from the public anymore.
Bette-The smart one. She's the artsy one who has been in a relationship with her partner, Tina, for YEARS. Even with their problems, they decide to get pregnant although their problems become worse and worse as time goes on.
Tine-Bette's other half. She eventually becomes the victim of her and Bette's problems and starts problems of her own.
Kit-The alcoholic. Kit is Bette's sister and has a problem with drinking. I must admit that her presence in the first season isn't all that important but she will eventually become a bigger character on the show.
Marina-The one with the accent. Marina is extremely beautiful and smart. She owns "The Planet", a little cafe that is the hangout for all of the characters on the show.
Jenny-The crazy one. Jenny starts out in a relationship with a man. And then she meets Marina..
Even if my brief descriptions of the characters don't entice you, I suggest you watch this show for yourself. I guarantee you that it'll have you laughing and crying just as much as any other non-lesbian show.
Best of the Seasons.......2007-04-01
I don't watch tv but I used to download this. It's so good I bought it. LOVE it.
Love is love is love.......2007-03-31
I have bought every season available for the L Word. The series is a must have staple in a lesbians video library (and for those who love lesbians). Only one complaint, the discs in the two seasons I've ordered from Amazon have skip areas in them or the dvd stops for whatever random reasons. I've cleaned the discs and the dvd player and still the skips. I will not be purchasing season 4 from Amazon but will spend the extra money and buy it from the L Words website directly. I hope that stops the misery of the skipping/stoppng discs.
Excellent.......2007-03-11
NO SPOILERS HERE...
I am in love with this show. I look forward to curling up on the couch with my loved one and delving into these ladies' lives and each show is never a disappointment. There are some soap opera gasp moments too!
Get this! It's a great investment in your DVD library.

They're here, they're queer, and they make Sex and the City look like a demure tea party. Showtime's quintessentially American Queer As Folk--based on the British miniseries--pours on copious amounts of hot and steamy sex. This slick (and slickly entertaining) series shares the same basic concept as its British counterpart--centering on a group of gay friends living in a primarily industrial city--but after that, all bets are off. Whereas the British version focused on the gritty, realistic drama of its characters, the American QAF is a glossy, fun soap opera that occasionally tackles big issues but never lets you forget that life at times can be a party, and you shouldn't be one of those poor suckers starving to death. A good part of the show's charm lies in its cast--boy-next-door Michael (Hal Sparks), ruthlessly seductive rake Brian (Gale Harold), out-and-proud Emmett (Peter Paige), wallflower Ted (Scott Lowell), and nubile teen Justin (Randy Harrison)--who grew from standard gay prototypes to intriguing characters by the first season's end. And while some subplots didn't work (such as Emmett's farfetched foray into gay-conversion therapy), others were quietly affecting, including Brian's coping with his father's death. Some may object to the show's relentless fixation on sex (and gay men--there are just two lesbian characters), but this is a series that in its own polished way is both engrossingly fun and truly groundbreaking. It's liberating to watch an American TV series in which the straight world is only peripheral. Let's hear it for the boys! --Mark Englehart

the first season of QAF really opens it up to be an enchanting series, its a bit sexual at times, but mature audiences can really appreciate the comedy, drama, and romance wrapped up in the tales. once you get in to this season you wont be able to put off seeing the rest. give Brian Kinney a chance to win your heart1
QAF is a Disturbing Must See, Whether Straight or Gay.......2007-06-27
I first saw most of series I, when it first debuted on Showtime. I found it disturbing that an older man, was having sex with a 17 year old. In today's world, that man, Brian Kinney, would be labeled as a sexual predator, and required to register as a sex offender. It certainly could give fire to those who say that QAF gives "proof" that gay men, prey on children. I am also disturbed by the large focus on Brian Kinney, who appears to be very narcisstic; something that as a mental health counselor, I see a lot of, in gay men. It is all about them. The series revolves around a lot of sexual encounters, with the only real relationship, between two lesbians. I see the possibility of a lot of stereotypes being reinforced, about gay men and lesbian women. However, I feel it is a must see, as it is meant to stir up a lot of feelings, and those feelings need to be pulled out and examined.
whether one agrees with the show or not, is not important, as to ask, "What does the show teach me about my own sexuality, relationships, friendships, etc."
Queer Like ME.......2007-06-16
I have loved this show ever since I saw it once on Showtime but I didn't have cable so I only knew the first couple of shows and any show I could catch. So when I heard the BOX SET was coming out I knew I had to have it. I love all of the stories an characters and can't wait to the get the second season (money's tight so have to ration ha ha) but i will get them all and I will be in my glory. I would like to thank the creators and actors for making this place bearable for gey men and women everywhere!!
It doesn't get much better.......2007-03-19
People tend to forget what a huge risk Showtime took putting this show on the airwaves. Even in a time before the Chaney administration started. The first season is edgy and provocative without pushing too hard to be so. The producers really did try to put as much content as possible into the first season. Because to be frank, they didn't know if they would get a second season. The ever present subject of most of the season is ageing. Personally, it was just nice to see a series for and about gay people that was not a comedy.

They're still out and proud, and in their second season the boys (and girls) of Queer as Folk continued to break ground as the most gay-friendly show on television (sorry, Will and Grace). Some plot lines were a little over the top, others truly heartfelt, but they were never less than entertaining, even during their All My Children moments. Season two opened in the aftermath of the gay-bashing of Justin (Randy Harrison), the young artist who wondered if he'd ever be able to paint or draw again, and went on to face a variety of issues and plotlines as diverse as its characters. Some were timely (Michael negotiating a relationship with new HIV-positive boyfriend Ben), some romantic (lesbians Lindsay and Melanie tying the knot), some new to the show (Emmett embarks on a relationship with a--gasp!--older gentleman), and some, well, far-fetched (how many of you had to wrestle, like Ted did, with starting your own pornographic web site?).
While the writing tended to flail about a bit, thankfully coalescing by the season's end, the show continued to be anchored by stellar actors, especially Peter Paige's Emmett, who grew the most during the second season; Michelle Clunie's Melanie, the alternately wry and sweet lesbian who became the show's secret weapon; and, as always, Gale Harold's Brian, the lothario with a heart of tarnished gold. Frustrating, fascinating, exasperating one moment and charming the next, Brian perfectly summed up the guilty pleasures of Queer as Folk, where humanity peeks out every now and then from behind the curtain of fabulous comedy and drama. --Mark Englehart

Queer as folk review.......2007-05-24
I love this series. While there is a bit too much sex involved in this show for my taste, I still love the show and think the story lines are great. This show brings up many issues that those in the GLBT community have to deal with in a realistic manner.
Lost in Transit???.......2007-04-02
I have been asked to do a review of the product but it hasn't even arrived yet. I am sure it will be good - if it ever does arrive!
Interestingly, I wasn't asked to do a review on my purchase prior to this - which, incidentaqlly, also hasn't arrived as yet!
One of the best seasons.......2007-03-09
So every QaF fan goes on about how much they love season 3 [which is quite amazing as well], but I must say that season 2 is my favorite. I mean, everyone hated the ending [if you're a Justin/Brian fan], but the middle is just *guh*. Seeing the angel ball episode is worth buying the entire season. It's just...just buy it. You won't be sorry.
QAF Season Two.......2007-01-16
Season Two is brilliant. If you get emotional with love stories you will cry watching season two. It is a good follow-on from season one as the stories still revolve around all the main characters. The story lines can be found in real everyday lives. The bonus features are excellent with lots of behind scenes footage. I highly recommend QAF Season Two

Best Show Ever.......2007-03-29
"The L Word" is like "Sex in the City" with better characters and a much higher IQ. The girls are glam, but hey, it's TV. Plenty of social issues and real dilemmas are addressed to make up for all the girls looking like they walked out of "Vogue" (and forgot to eat for a few weeks).
However, if you're homophobic it's not the show for you. You might want to stick to "Full House" or something equally bland as not to upset your fragile sensibilities.
AN EXCELENT PRODUCT.......2007-03-23
These three seasons are wonderful for me. It has a good history and with excelents artists. I love the L word... And amazon service was good.
Thank you.
Amazing.......2007-03-16
I am a huge fan of the L Word and when I found out I could get the first three seasons together through Amazon and a much lower rate then to buy them all seperately I was extremely happy. I got the shipment withtin a week and have been extrelemely satisfied with the procees Amazon uses. I absolutely love and recommend this purchase for anyone who loves the L Word you will not be disappointed.
Entertainingly mindless soap opera .......2007-03-13
I bought all three seasons of the L word to watch while I was on a week long "bed rest". It was the perfect choice. Certainly this is a work of fiction, since those Lesbians sleep with anyone and anything. They trade each other around too! The drama was exciting and it's slightly intelligent, yet dumb enough to just watch without much strain. Some of the scenes were a little unsettling for my palette. I did not care for the trans-gender character.
My husband did not care for it at all. He found the Lesbians somewhat disgusting. I think this is better for a homosexual man or a straight woman. Lesbians might not care for it, since it does not make their lifestyle seem too fun. Bottom line, perfect show for a "I'm going to do nothing and stay in bed day".

Good, but perhaps running out of steam ?????.......2007-03-22
Seems that season four is almost like a bridge. It connects season 3 and 5 but without much substance. No grand ending to leave a cliff hanger, not much plot really, a little disapointing to be honest but it's still worth watching if your a fan which I am, just wished for a little better and more thrilling story line. (As always Sharon Gless steals every scene she is in, awesome performance from her!!!!)
Never rewceived QAF 4th series.......2007-03-10

Once a series has broken new ground, where does it go from there? Showtime's The L Word, concerning the relationships of a community of lesbian Los Angelenos, turned heads with its smart, funny writing and fully realized characters. Season Two offers more of the same, with some notable guest stars and experiments in narrative and music. This season, Jenny (Mia Kirshner) fully embraces her sexuality as her ex-husband/roomie (Eric Mabius) departs and voyeuristic documentary filmmaker Mark (Eric Lively) and womanchaser Shane (Katherine Moennig) move in. Shane and Jenny struggle good-heartedly over the affections of new character Carmen (Sarah Shahi), who isn't given much to do plot-wise apart from occasionally spinning records and serving as one corner of the love triangle. Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) start the season on the rocks due to Bette's infidelity; the introduction of the one-dimensionally nasty Helena Peabody (Rachel Shelley) causes further friction between Bette and Tina while playing havoc with Bette's curatorial career. Meanwhile, Dana (Erin Daniels) and Alice (Leisha Hailey) go from being best friends to being a whole lot more, providing some of the most touching scenes of the season. Kit (Pam Grier) takes on The Planet, the seeming center of LA's lesbian universe, converting it into a nightclub where, conveniently, guest-starring bands can play.
Strong points of the season include Bette and Kit confronting the death of their father (the superb Ossie Davis) and Shane's new job as a gopher for a high-powered Hollywood producer (the equally superb Camryn Manheim). Less strong are the distracting, neo-expressionistic passages meant to be glimpses into Jenny's creative mind and the interminable use of the series' theme song--re-interpreted in a number of genres--to the point of distraction. Mark's voyeurism, which crosses all sorts of boundaries as he installs hidden cameras around the house, is a brilliant way to challenge male viewers who may tune in just to TiVo their way to the sex scenes. That said, the arc of that particular story grows increasingly far-fetched as Mark somehow avoids criminal prosecution and instead endures the horrible fate of having Jenny refuse his offer of coffee and a muffin. Despite its flaws, The L Word is a show that deserves to be cheered on, not for its politics, but for the skillful way it conveys complex human entanglements with sensitivity. --Ryan Boudinot

Customer Reviews:
"Crisp-ay!".......2007-05-02
First of all, let me say that you don't need to be a lesbian to appreciate this show. Yes, it does touch on lesbian issues but it mostly involves the love lives of women.. who happen to love women.
If you've already seen the first season, you've already been introduced to the brilliant characters. While the first season did a great job of setting the scene/tone, it didn't really dig deep into the lives of its characters. This season begins to do that.
Kit takes over Marina's job. Bette and Tina have even more troubling issues in their relationship. Shane continues to be a player but when new character Carmen comes along, we begin to see a change in her. Alice and Dana become the cutest couple ever. Jenny's relationship with Marina starts Jenny's struggle to figure out her sexual identity. And we're introduced to Helena, a character that will eventually play a bigger part in the show.
If you've seen season 1 and liked it, get this one as well. It has everything you like about season 1 and then some.
Power.......2007-04-11
I absolutely love this show! I think it speaks to women in a lot of different ways! I truly love to sit down and just watch these shows back to back! Excellent choice!
awesome.......2007-03-09
I love this season!!! Tina is pregnant and tries to reconcile with Bette. It's so intense!!!
Love It!.......2007-01-29
I became interested in this genre back when I saw the movie "High Art". Since then I have also enjoyed "Fun" and "The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love". The lesbian theme and especially lesbian love stories are quite compelling, which is probably why I enjoy this series so much. While the girls are pretty and the stories very sexy, I must say that there is some virtue in quantity over quality, and that is much in abundance here. Very worthwhile as a collection.
absolute must have.......2007-01-23
this is the best season of this show...I could watch this season over and over again

Sleeper Cell: American Terror is so consistently excellent that the series' cancellation seems woefully premature. Citing budgetary costs and the popularity of newer shows (like Weeds), executives at Showtime ended the series after this superb second season, which benefits from its limited 8-episode run by maintaining a riveting combination of brisk pacing, intelligent plotting, and an admirably meaningful effort to explore the true nature of Muslim faith. For posterity, both seasons of Sleeper Cell will gain lasting value for their astute and illuminating depiction of Islamic devotion on both sides of the battle against radical Islamic terrorism. In this regard, American Terror is even better than the first season, as it deepens our understanding of the religious and philosophical differences between undercover FBI agent Darwyn Al-Sayeed (Michael Ealy) and Farik (Oded Fehr), the radical Islamic terrorist (with connections to Al-Qaeda) who continues to mastermind attacks on American soil. As American Terror begins, Farik is enduring brutal torture at the hands of his American captors while Darwyn, still undercover, is pretending to lead a new sleeper cell consisting of a former Latino gang member (Kevin Alejandro) who became an extremist in prison; a closeted gay Iraqi ex-patriot (Omid Abtahi) raised in London; and a Dutch nanny (Thekla Rueten) with personal reasons for hating America.
While Farik's former right-hand-man Ilija (Henri Lubatti) struggles in vain to return to a quiet, normal life, American Terror takes all of its characters into darker, more dangerous territory, and heightened realism gives the series even greater emotional impact as unexpected tragedies befall several supporting characters. While Ealy and Fehr continue to anchor the series with their finely nuanced performances, these episodes ultimately lead to a powerful finale that, in many respects, returns Darwyn to where he began--with potentially greater threats looming in his future. While Fox TV's 24 favors nonstop action and increasingly implausible plotting, Sleeper Cell: American Terror presents a frighteningly authentic scenario that honors Islam while demonstrating how it's been perverted by radicals with evil intentions. Because the second season has a cliffhanger ending that may never be resolved, it's a pity the series wasn't allowed to continue, and the DVD extras offer minimal compensation: They consist of "Infiltrating the Final Cell," an interesting interview between Ealy and two of Sleeper Cell's FBI consultants; "The Enemy Within" (a first-season recap); and "Farik's Story," a pointless 90-minute assembly of nearly all of Oded Fehr's scenes from American Terror. Why bother, when it's all better viewed in the context of the episodes? --Jeff Shannon
Description
In SLEEPER CELL: AMERICAN TERROR, the Muslim undercover FBI agent, Darwyn (Michael Ealy), discovers that another terrorist cell in Southern California is planning a catastrophic attack that will be more successful than the last attempt. Meanwhile, Farik escapes out of the country and directs another terrorist operation, beginning a parallel storyline between Southern California and the Middle East.
Customer Reviews:
OK Show but could have been a great show .......2007-06-18
I just finished watching Sleeper Cell - American terror and it was OK it had the potential to be a great show, but the story with one of the characters changed everything. I will admit the ending was great, it left you to wonder whats going to happen next. I would have gave this show 5 stars and suggest to everyone to buy the dvd, but I would suggest not buying this dvd because they decided to have a gay character on the show and having that character on the show was pointless, and for everyone who saw the first season and enjoyed every moment when you watch the second season, beware your gonna see some scenes that your not gonna like.
Sleeper Cell - American Terror - The Complete Second Season.......2007-05-12
At first i wasnt sure about this show in the first season of the show. My brother had recommended it because he said it was really good. As the episodes went on i realized that to. This show in many ways is even better then 24 just because of the reality of the issues... It shows the struggle inside islam between the true islam of peace and love (the fbi agent muslim trying to stop them), and the extremists who claim they are muslims ( the terrorists), and the struggle with the image of islam in the west, as well as what our country is going through at the moment. In the end the plot, actors, and everything else are great and keep you interested until the very end. I cant wait for the next season.
A bad ending to an excellent series.......2007-05-12
Honestly, the first season kept me up everynight after work untill I finished a disk but this season was very, very disapointing. Homosexuality is not something I'm real uncomfortable with but the needlessness of the multiple encounters was very disturbing. Also, the finale was a big let down. Should have left something open for fans instead of.....Well, you'll see if you actually want to see it. I wish I hadn't bought it. Good Luck.
This is a good fix for 24 fans.......2007-05-07
Don't get me wrong, sleeper cell is no 24. However, if you like 24, Alias and Prison Break type shows, this is a good one to buy. My husband and I really prefer to purchase the DVD, as opposesd to watching the show each week. It makes for a fun rainy weekend marathon. Plus, who wants to wait an entire week, when there is a cliff hanger. Speaking of cliff hangers, you might also like The Shield. Sleeper Cell is good terrorist fun.
Music comment.......2007-04-20
This show features excellent music.
If anyone can identify the songs in season 2, episode 3 ("Torture") at 21:11 (something like "Breathe out so I can breathe you in") and 30:30 I will paypal you $20.
Thanks!
