Before his death, comedian Chris Farley made a pair of surprisingly successful comedies that teamed him with Saturday Night Live colleague David Spade. Their relationship in each film was pretty much the same, but then so was Abbott and Costello's or Laurel and Hardy's (not that Farley and Spade are in their league). In Tommy Boy, Farley plays the ne'er-do-well son of a successful auto parts manufacturer (Brian Dennehy). When Dad drops dead just after marrying a young new wife, it's up to Tommy (aided by sarcastic bean-counter Spade) to rescue the company by taking over for his father. Black Sheep features a slightly different plot: This time, Spade is hired by Farley's brother (Tim Matheson), a candidate for governor, to keep Farley (an accident-prone buffoon) out of sight until after the election. Farley has a likable quality that is exploited by continuous slapstick centered on his clumsiness, both physically and socially. --Marshall Fine

The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Teen-hearthrob Renfro is a natural, playing a kid whose life is in jeopardy after he witnesses the death of a Mob lawyer. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson

Description

Settle in. Take a deep breath. Hold tight. The best screen version yet of a novel by John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) delivers all-out, moment-by-moment suspense! Headliners Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones join newcomer Brad Renfro in The Client, a whirlwind thriller that "starts like a house afire and keeps on blazing" (Chicago Tribune). Renfro plays Mark Sway, an 11-year-old torn between what he knows and what he can never tell. A hitman will snuff him in half a heartbeat if Mark reveals what he learned about a Mob murder. An ambitious federal prosecutor (Jones) will keep the pressure on until Mark tells all. Suddenly, Mark isn't a boy playing air guitar anymore. He's a pawn in a deadly game. And his only ally is a courageous but unseasoned attorney (Sarandon) who risks her career for him...but never imagines she'll also risk her life.

2 out of 5 stars Not wonderful.......2007-06-14

The Client was a disappointment.

I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Client.......2007-01-29

Sarandon is always good but if you like Tommy Lee Jones you will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, however, we have the positives and the negatives........2006-10-07

Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.

Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.

Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.

Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.

Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.

3 out of 5 stars mostly good, some flubs.......2006-06-02

The movie started out nice and exciting, then, unfortunately, every few scenes would have a slip in reality that makes you say "oops".
Here are just a few:
1. Boy does not actually see a man die, but is traumatized nevertheless (for the balance of the movie).
2. Person shoots a lock open with gun (just like in the movies), though it never happens in real life.
3. In a closed dark boathouse, there are the convenient reflections of light on the water to illuminate everything we need to see.
4. At least one, if not two, people should have fired or not fired their gun (I don't want to spoil it). Instead, we get the usual Hollywood "talk-down"... (oops, I spoiled it).
5. In one scene, the police supposedly have cordoned off a parking lot to try to locate someone, yet there are many pedestrians, and in fact it is the important escape scene in a car that just drives through among the cop cars.

Apart from those and other similar gaffes, it was a well-made movie with a long list of notable actors. I enjoyed some supporting characters (Anthony LaPaglia, JT Walsh) more than the top 3 leads, however.

The DVD has some skimpy text-based extras about cast/crew, a few boring paragraphs of "behind the scenes", a bit of text about casting Brad Refro, and some "reel recommendations" that show the cover of some related DVDs.

If you are not picky about "reality points" you can easily add another star.

5 out of 5 stars Action thriller with emotion........2006-05-23

A mixture of well-developed characters, seemingly inescapable situations, mystery, thrilling action and truly scary moments make this film a solid piece of work. The seasoned and talented cast add the spice that makes this a tasty thriller for any fan of the cinema. Emotion spills effortlessly into every corner of the film, spreading 'human' moments everywhere. There's never a dull moment.

5 out of 5 stars Who Killed the Keg?.......2007-06-13

Tommy Boy Directed by Peter Segal
PG-13 97min.

Who Killed The Keg?

Have you ever seen a movie where you laughed so hard you almost choked on something you eating? Well here's one of those movies. Tommy Boy is a hilarious slapstick comedy featuring some of the besting actors and is directed by Peter Segal. This movie takes place in the U.S. in the 1990's. Tommy Callahan (Chris Farley, Saturday Night Live) just got his diploma after 7 years of college. After returning home Tommy realizes that his dad (Brian Dennehy) is marrying a real hot mama (Bo Derek.) But unexpectedly his father has a heart attack at his wedding. Before you could say "Who killed the keg?" the family auto parts business starts to go downhill and it's about to be sold but Tommy plus his dad's right hand man, Richard (David Spade, Saturday Night Live) volunteer to go on the road and sell the company's merchandise in order to pay off the bank. The only problem.... neither of them know a single thing about sales. If I had a penny for each thing either of them knew about sales I'd be dirt poor. What will happen to the business?

This movie is one of those movies that, makes you laugh until you pee your pants and then you laugh some more. You'll want to watch this movie over and over again. This can be compared to Black Sheep some of Farley and Spade's previous work. This movie is hilarious, has a good plot and is easy to understand. Farley's personality in this movie is hilarious. I have seriously seen this movie at least 100 times and it's still funny. No matter which way this movie turns it's still always funny.

I recommend this movie to 10 and up but because of the PG-13 so only 13 and up might be able to see it. Also comedy lovers should see it because if they don't they don't know what they are missing.

Horror maestro Tom Holland (Fright Night) brought wit and devilish energy to this 1988 scarefest about a murderer (Brad Dourif) who wills his soul into an innocuous doll named Chucky, and reveals himself only to the toy's owner, a frightened little boy. Catherine Hicks plays the child's mother, and Chris Sarandon a detective; neither of them knows what to make of the kid's story. Monster-doll stories are always wonderfully surreal, and Child's Play is no exception. Holland oversees some finely tuned special effects that allow Chucky to express himself and do some damage--it is truly unnerving but somehow good, subversive fun. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Hi i'm chucky wanna play?.......2007-05-18

Man this was more funnier than so called scary horror creepy or what ever you would call it but I call it funny and extremely corny but good. The notorious lakeshore strangler charles lee ray has been gunned down almost ready to die and has to find a temporary replacement body so he will not die which is chucky (brad dourif) the friendly good guy doll who is every childs friend to the end but when chucky reveals to the child andy barkley that he's alive andy must make a run from the hospital to his home and lock the doors and arm himself to defeat chucky and protect his soul from chucky who want's out of the body and andy's mom saves him from getting his soul almost taken away. Actually I own an 8 plush chucky doll chucky rules.

4 out of 5 stars The doll doesn't look scary but its MERCILESS personality makes up for that and then some.......2007-05-05

This is the movie that spawned 4 sequels (all inferior) and gave rise to one of the most well known and feared characters in horror cinema: "Chucky the killer doll."

To save himself from death, a man puts his soul into a doll because "nobody would be able to hurt" him but, more than that, he had no other choice. The doll is then bought by a mother as a birthday gift to her 6 year old son. Over the next couple of days the reincarnated Chucky is determined to settle old scores with the people who killed him. Spooky enough for you?

Alright, the doll isn't THAT scary-looking. But I just love its attitude of killing without mercy and the fact that the doll obviously enjoys killing people. I wasn't scared so much as thrilled that the doll loves doing what it does and makes an art of it and, I think deliberately, tries to be creative in how it kills people. This doll also has what has got to be THE most distinctive and recognizable laugh of any major horror figure.

It's all good fun except for one thing: The reason why I didn't give five stars is the kid (Andy) sucks at acting. I know he's just a kid but there are millions of kids out there and thousands of them could do a better job. How this kid said his lines didn't 'feel' right half the time.

One last thing: Chucky is not, in my opinion, the scariest doll in horror films. If you want to get something that involves a truly scary doll and makes Chucky look nice you should see the Trilogy of Terror. Having said that, I think that Chucky is, if not the scariest, arguably the most entertaining. It's a great movie to watch on a Friday night with a couple of friends. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend that you at least rent it.

5 out of 5 stars Good beginning.......2007-01-10

This is the one that started the series off. The perfect accompaniment would be the "Chucky collection" which contains 2-5. Saves you from purchasing them seperately. A must have if you are a fan of the films

4 out of 5 stars CHILD'S PLAY.......2006-11-28

Usually the first movie it's allways the best one,I like this one because it was more serious than the others that came after,I liked the first three movies but the the original is my favorite!

4 out of 5 stars As any other First Part.......2006-11-05

Its a good horror movie alhtough you wont find so many fun parts as the part 3, 4th or 5th.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Farley's Best.......2007-04-07

If you don't see this movie and ;laugh their is something wrong with you.

5 out of 5 stars FARLEY AND SPADE'S BEST MOVIE .......2007-03-25

This is a very funny movie! Farley and Spade looked like a strong comic team in this film. Basicly a buddy/road film with a heart. Farley was never funnier in any movie than this one! A must have in your comedy collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie.......2007-03-08

5 out of 5 stars Tommy Tricker Still Rocks!.......2007-02-27

I bought this DVD for my daughter who is 25. This was her favorite movie when she was very young. We watched it EVERY time it came on! I was pleasantly surprised to find it in DVD form. I mailed it to her as a surprise and she loved it. Now her poor husband has to watch it with her almost every night. Thanks a lot for being able to keep happy memories alive!

5 out of 5 stars As good as i remember...........2006-11-13

Like many of the other reviews i saw this when i was younger on HBO and was always excited when it happened to be on. When it came in the mail the other day i was as excited as a school boy. Im now 22 and generally dont watch kid movies anymore but this movie is still great fun to watch. I really think that this movie got me started on wanting to travel the world when i was younger. If you have kids or just enjoy kid movies this is a must for your collection. You will definitely watch it more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever..........2005-12-28

I watched this movie as a kid - it was always my favorite, but when I got older I eventually forgot about it. A few months ago, I re-bought the film from ebay. I LOVE this movie. Great for kids, it stands the test of time. I still love this movie for it's corny storyline and the bad acting. Though the acting isn't top notch - it is very imaginative and a great film to entertain kids. The film features not only Rufus Wainwright, but also Celine Dion. Great film, I absolutely would suggest anyone get this movie. You will LOVE it and remember it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Liverpool Worthy.......2005-05-16

This movie is wonderful. It makes me warm inside. The excitement I felt when I watched this movie was only rivalled by Liverpool's victory in the Champions League Semifinal.

4 out of 5 stars Adorable!.......2004-11-24

I got this movie to see 14 year old Rufus Wainwright in it (who is great in it, in a small role as a singer), and the movie turned out to be absolutely adorable altogether. It's a bit too cheesy to really be enjoyable for adults, but my 11 year old brother watched it and loves it now. It's so much better than the overly stylized kid's movies that are being made these days - in this movie, the kids actually act like kids, not overly precocious mini-adults, and there isn't a product placement every 2 minutes. Overall, a really fun adventure movie for kids - highly recommended!

Amazon.com essential video

There's nothing hip about this vintage Disney film that begins and ends with a corny song about the "best doggone dog in the West." But that's the beauty of Old Yeller, originally released in 1957. The simple, heart-warming story of a boy who bonds with a feisty stray dog in 1860s Texas is full of 1950s sensibilities: A Donna Reed-style perfect "Momma" (Dorothy McGuire) who knows best, a couple of brothers who quarrel in the best sitcom tradition, and a father (Fess Parker, in a small role) who goes off to provide for his family, leaving his older boy (Tommy Kirk) in charge and his incredibly cute younger one (Kevin Corcoran) to steal as many scenes in the movie as he possibly can. With Old Yeller at his side, Kirk becomes a little man, who in the end must make a decision so heart-breaking that it's one of filmdom's most memorable moments. --Valerie J. Nelson

Description

No film better captures the powerful emotions of hope, courage, and friendship than this treasured and much beloved classic, OLD YELLER. The quintessential tale of a boy's love for his dog has touched the hearts of millions, its enduring legacy growing with each new generation and it's "still one of the best!" (Leonard Maltin) Set amidst the landscape of 1860s Texas, a young boy named Travis (Tommy Kirk) wants nothing to do with the lop-eared stray. But Old Yeller quickly proves himself a loyal friend, protecting the family and saving Travis' life. Soon they become inseparable pals, sharing joyous experiences and learning valuable lessons about growing up.

4 out of 5 stars Best Doggone Dog in the West.......2007-03-07

Life was tough in the old west. There were wild critters, Native Americans (annoyed that someone was taking their land, again), insufficient rain, the lecherous fat guy looking to mooch your food, and hydrophoby (hydrophobia, also known as rabies). Yep, life was tough in the old west. But no problem, Katie Coates (classy actor Dorothy McGuire who appeared in numerous roles in movies such as "Friendly Persuasion," "Swiss Family Robinson," and "Summer Magic") manages to survive everything with the support of son Travis (Disney regular Tommy Kirk). Katie needed help because her other son Arliss (Kevin Corcoran, another Disney regular) was an obnoxious brat.

Father Jim Coates (Fess Parker, who was already a huge success in Disney's Davy Crockett shows) goes on a trip, leaving Katie, Travis and Arliss to fend for themselves. Before long a big yellow dog shows up, much to Arliss's delight. Initially Travis resents the dog because it causes him a lot of work when the dog causes destruction on the farm. However, the big yellow dog is friendly and manages to save Arliss's life. Old Yeller even wins Travis's love.

Much of this movie is a comedy. Arliss and Old Yeller keep us entertained with their antics. Old Yeller is so big and lovable that you have to laugh sometimes. Old Yeller is also very protective of his new family.

As I said before, life is tough in the old west. Wild animals existed all around the Coates homestead. One day a wolf attacks the family. The only thing that saves the family is the big yellow dog. Katie quickly realizes that the wolf had rabies, and she pens Old Yeller up to learn whether the wolf has given Old Yeller rabies.

I leave you to watch the end of the movie for yourself.

"Old Yeller" is one of those movies that deliberately tugs at your heartstrings. Even I struggled to keep my eyes from watering when Travis faced Old Yeller in the shed. However, Disney movies nearly always end with a message of hope and love, and so does this one.

Sometimes it feels good to have your emotions manipulated, even if you are sad for a little while. This movie does it so well that you may want to watch it twice in a row.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Worst Doggone movie is the world!!!!!!!.......2006-10-26

I watched this film because everyone said it is a classic. Like many classics it is anything but. Why does everyone cry at this movie? I didn't cry at this movie; I didn't anything close to tears. This is not because I hate dogs, I think that dogs are not people and that the dog was better off after he was shot. Also this movie may have been much better if the acting had be decent. The acting of the boy made me laugh instead of cry when the dog died. And if his little brother had spoken one more time I would have screamed. This same little boy is in many Disney films and every time he is unbarable. So unless you have a love for punnishment don't watch this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed me.......2006-06-26

First, you must know I love animals, I love movies and I love movies in which I can cry my heart out. I have cried on almost every movie I have ever saw, but somehow this movie didn't make me cry.
I guess that isn't a real bond for having a dog for such a small period of time....
It's a nice movie, not big deal

5 out of 5 stars You Are So Beautiful, . . . To Me.......2006-04-24

Disney has done outstanding films about a boy and his dog - Old Yeller tops them all, including Lassie w/Roddy McDowell. And this DVD set comes with a second disc filled with an array of quick dog flicks coupled with interviews of people in the dog flick business.

This 1957 movie is set in pre-Civil War America and centers around a frontier family whose "Pa" (played by Fess Parker) heads out on a cattle drive and leaves his eldest son, Travis, (is he only twelve?) in charge of "Ma" and his little brother Arliss. The boy feels like the odd one out with his little brother getting all the attention, until a stray yellow dog turns up. Travis and Old Yeller become best friends.

Old Yeller wins the rest of the family over too by saving Arliss from a bear, saving the sweet corn from raccoons, and protecting Travis from wild hogs. The hog fight leaves both boy and dog with flesh wounds from their frightful encounter and everyone worried whether either of the two would come down with rabies. However, they both recover without incident.

Then Old Yeller has a run-in with a wolf. Soon after, Old Yeller is frothing at the mouth trying to get out of the shed that Travis put him in as a precaution. Travis keeps telling his mother that Old Yeller will get better. But Old Yeller becomes so sick and so out his mind, that Travis has to become a man and put his best friend out of his misery.

This film made Sputnik look like a hot-air balloon!

Disc. 2 is the best part of the set!, with all the doggy extras and interviews. I am forever grateful to the reviewers that detailed what disc 2,of the DVD Vault collection has on it!!I have searched for 20 years for The Arizona Sheepdog movie because I own relatives of the Border collies featured. Its not the entire movie but, 18 minutes is better than nothing.I never would have found it without the reviewers that described what was on disc 2. Old Yeller is sad but, realistic of life and the happiness we can get from our dogs, through they are with us for only a short time.

3 out of 5 stars Great Show - Terrible DVD Setup.......2007-04-11

There's no doubt that you will almost die laughing while watching these Kung Faux DVDs. They're smart, witty, and so unexpected. However my main complaint is that there are COMMERCIALS! Yes, commercials! Advertisements for various products run two to three times within one episode and then there's about 5-10 minutes of commercials between each episode. Another problem is that there is only two episodes on each DVD, which would be extremly pricey if you paid the full $17.99 Amazon asks for each of the 5 DVDs. I suppose you could say the many extras on the disc make up for there only being two episodes but spending $90 to own the complete series is outrageous!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely FUNNY!.......2006-06-20

When I was first introduced to this DVD, as a birthday gift, with the disclaimer: 'You're going to really dig this', I was instatly hooked the moment the first episode started. After the first 2 minutes I was laughing so hard, tears streamed from my eyes. The hip-hop element and street slang, wrapped around a kung fu movie is brilliant! This is the MOST "original" display of cinematography I have ever seen. The video game setting, mixed with a comic book style and the re-telling of classic karate flicks is something to see! I'm hooked! The first episode "Ill Master" is so funny, that I have watched this no less than a dozen times; only to see/hear something I missed previously. THANK YOU Tommyboy Films for an awesome product!

5 out of 5 stars Kung Faux is Cutting Edge Comedy, Classic Cuts, & Kung Fu!.......2005-11-26

Man if you love comic books, classic cuts of music from the golden age of hip hop, kung fu flicks, & video games,
this TV series will put you on seventh heaven for real.

The dialogue is so fresh and so funny and so fly with bumping tracks, it feels like something that has been around for years while also feeling somehow new each time I watch it, and I can't say that about much of anything except maybe the movies "Sin City" or "Kung Fu Hustle", but "Kung Faux" kills them when it comes to scoring with massive tracks from artists like "De La Soul", "Grooverider", & "Stetsasonic".

I can't wait to own the whole seires on dvd and I love that is finally being released.

Now they just need to start releasing some soundtracks on CD from the series for me to be ready to die happy.-chuuurch!

French director François Truffaut once said, "Our New Wave would never have come into being if it hadn't been for the young Morris Engel, with his fine Little Fugitive." High praise indeed, and as Truffaut observed, this early milestone of American independent filmmaking had a powerful influence on such later French classics as The Red Balloon and Truffaut's own Les Mistons and The 400 Blows.

Codirected by Ray Ashley, Morris Engel, and Ruth Orkin, and photographed by Engel in New York during the summer of 1952, the film tells the simple story of a 7-year-old Brooklyn boy named Joey (charmingly played by nonactor Richie Andrusco), who flees to Coney Island after a mischievous prank leads Joey to believe he's accidentally killed his older brother Lennie. With six dollars in his pocket, Joey indulges himself with amusement rides and junk food, and as the weekend progresses, Lennie begins an equally adventurous search for his missing kid brother.

Winner of the Silver Lion award at the 1953 Venice Film Festival and Oscar nominee for Best Story, Little Fugitive was inducted into the prestigious National Film Registry in 1997. Making innovative use of a hand-held camera (which impressed Engel's friend Stanley Kubrick, who used the same equipment for his debut feature Fear and Desire), the film favors image over dialogue, and unfolds with timeless and universal appeal. A pleasure from start to finish, Little Fugitive is a little masterpiece that you'll never forget. --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Morris Engel's All-American classic. Widely regarded as one of the most influential and enjoyable films of the American independent cinema, "Little Fugitive" is an utterly charming fable that poetically captures the joys and wonders of childhood.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Fugitive.......2007-06-26

This simple, sublime, touching little film became a landmark in independent film-making, winning the Silver Lion Award at Cannes, and influencing what would become the French New Wave with its documentary-like immediacy. Seen today, "Fugitive" evokes a potent nostalgia for the long-ago fifties, with the fabled Coney Island beach and amusement park captured (from a kid-size view) in its prime, with all its wonder intact. Appealing non-actor Andrusco is also transfixing as Joey, our little protagonist. This "Little Fugitive" is definitely worth tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars joey's day at coney island.......2007-02-17

Just wanted to say that this has always been my "favorite" kids film since i first saw it on tv, as i was too young to see it when it came out in 1952. Joey is wonderful in this film about a youngster who flees to coney island after being tricked into thinking he's shot & killed his older brother lenny. With just a few bucks in his pocket he explores all the games & rides & meets 'jay the ponie ride man' who eventually befriends him when lenny shows up searching for his younger brother. This film features natural everyday people + kids who are acting without even trying, so the viewer is put at ease & can enjoy all the mis-adventures that happen to joey during his "day at coney island", like riding the ponies everytime he found bottles to return for deposit. I recomend this film to anyone with young children, as it's an excellent study of boys & how they relate to each other & the pranks that can get them into trouble. Fortunately, this film has a very happy ending, & the best part is that their mom never suspects anything unusual happened while she was away visiting her ill sister. It's a timeless treasure that children of all ages will enjoy! Too bad this film never had a sequel, as more adventures of joey & lenny would have been most welcome!!!

5 out of 5 stars We love this film!.......2007-02-08

This is such a terrific, charming film! My husband recommended it and we had seen it on TV, years ago. It brought back wonderful memories for him of Coney Island, from years and years ago. The story is charming, the acting wonderful. Just a terrific film!

    5 out of 5 stars once-upon-a-time .......2006-06-09

I saw this film 15 years ago on cable TV and finally bit the bullet and got the DVD from Amazon this week. It is expensive but I wanted my children to see it. We go to Coney Island every now and then and while it is fun, Coney Island today does not compare to the Coney Island in this film.

Coney Island has had many incarnations, always as an amusement area. And Coney Island in the summer of 1952 is the background to this charming film. In Little Fugitive the Wonder Wheel, Parachute Jump and the Horse Race and more are in their prime. Only the Wonder Wheel is still running today. The Horse Race burned down and the parachute jump tower is a derelict.

And, since the background action is not staged, the people in this film are real. When those folks--teenagers in 1952 and senior citizens today--thought about the next generation, our world is the future they contemplated.

The film transfer on the DVD is excellent. The quality of the fine trailer is not as good.

The commentary by director Morris Engel is a primer on how to make a serious low budget feature, interesting to any film student but also to any film fan.

Engel was also the cameraman. He shot the entire thing on black and white 35mm film using a hand held camera. All of the shooting was silent with the dialog, music and effects added in a studio later. Interestingly, the version of the film seen on TV and on this DVD contains a deleted scene, cut for no good reason at all, as Engel explains.

While writing this I looked on the web to see what happened to Richie Andrusco. I found this instead: when Morris Engel died in 2005 at the age of 86, the New York Times wrote of him as "the New York photographer and filmmaker whose 1953 film, 'The Little Fugitive,' established a model for independent moviemaking that influenced directors like John Cassavetes and François Truffaut..."

    5 out of 5 stars "Little Fugitive".......2006-02-24

I loved this movie, when I was 11 years old and still do some 53 years later. Memorable charcters in a memorable story. A brilliant piece of film making.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie But I'm Wondering About The Correct Aspect Ratio!.......2005-10-14

The Misadventures of Merlin Jones is a good movie, I first saw it when it had been shown on TV and as I had never seen it before I decided to watch it and I'm glad I did because it was a cute movie and became one of my favorite Disney movies and I'm glad it's on DVD and the only thing I'm wondering about is the aspect ratio? Was this move filmed in widescreen or fullscreen? The DVD is fullscreen and I'm wondering if that is the right aspect ratio or is if it's just another pan & scan edit of a widescreen movie?

5 out of 5 stars The Misadventures of Merlin Jones.......2004-06-13

I have this movie on VHS and I have watched it over and over. It's one of my favorite Disney's film collections. Two Thumbs up!

2 out of 5 stars Poor DVD quality, but correct aspect ratio!.......2004-06-11

I'm in strong agreement with the complaints in these reviews regarding Disney's shoddy DVD releases: fullscreen, skimpy or no extras (not even movie trailers which bring back the first view of the next, highly anticipated Disney film), scratchy and dull prints, and comparatively very high prices.

Regarding its aspect ratio, however, this film was made for TV but ended up in theaters instead. Filmed in November 1962 for the 1963-64 season of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color," it so pleased Walt Disney that he decided to release it to theaters. The DVD presents its original aspect ratio, one intended for TV. It was filmed to be presented at 1.33:1 -- even though it was matted for theatrical presentation, probably at 1.75:1.

But there are other problems with this DVD. The print is clearly inferior to the one used for years on The Disney Channel. Color timing is off, shifting in individual cuts within a scene; faces change color with the light. There are scratches. It is not sharp. It is not worthy of a DVD but looks more like a good VHS tape.

As others here have pointed out, Disney used to be known for providing only the best quality in every product. The company has fallen very far short from that excellent standard. (It could have used one of the excellent prints still kept in the vaults -- but, as with so many recent releases -- it didn't bother.) What more could be expected from a company that fired the person responsible for the excellent-but-cancelled "Vault Disney" DVD line? I will be very reluctant to buy additional Disney DVDs until there's a clear turnaround by the company. Disney should announce it realizes it's gotten things wrong and will in the future always offer DVDs from the best -- or restored -- prints and at the correct aspect ratio.

1 out of 5 stars Pan-and-scan again?! Disney must hate Annette Funicello!.......2004-04-06

Why is it that MGM treated Annette Funicello so very well with her classic Beach movie series in widescreen, yet Disney - Annette's original employer - acts like she's a $2 tramp?

First Annette's Babes In Toyland got the shaft and now this. Absolutely outrageous! This would never have happened on Walt's watch - or Roy's, either, for that matter. It all goes to prove what a total JERK Mike Eisner, the current head of Disney, is. Hopefully they'll finally vote him COMPLETELY out, and he won't be allowed on the lot. What a dummy!

Another reviewer has correctly noted that Disney titles including Babes In Toyland, The Moon-Spinners, and Blackbeard's Ghost have also been thrown into the horrible pan-and-scan scrap heap. What's the matter - they weren't good enough for the "Vault Disney" treatment? WHY NOT?

Disney even choked on the DVD for The Absent-Minded Professor... that is, until an enraged public boycotted them! Then Disney saw the light and rushed out another version in its proper widescreen format. But why must we fans - with all our big buying dollars - be put through all of this hassle on a case by case basis in the first place? Hey, Disney - just give us ALL your movies in cleaned up widescreen and decent stereo and shut up.

And let's look at another very stupid move by Disney's pathetic DVD hacks - like the Apple Dumpling Gang duo, both of which star Don Knotts and Tim Conway. They release the original Apple in widescreen, yet for some strange reason Rides Again gets only pan-and-scan?* HUH?!

Anyway, one can only hope that some year we'll be able to enjoy Merlin Jones (and Babes In Toyland) - featuring the awe-inspiring beauty of Annette Funicello - in the original widescreen that their directors intended. But it probably won't be THIS year!

Boycott all Disney DVDs after 1955 that are not in widescreen!

(*Update: Disney later released a second version (in 2005) of ADG2. They'd caved in and finally put it in widescreen.)
