Christopher Guest (director of A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, and Waiting for Guffman) and his sparkling troupe of improvisational satirists return with a sardonic look at C-list (or perhaps D- or E-list) actors driven to the brink of madness by the possibility of winning an Academy Award. Marilyn Hack (the ever-brilliant Catherine O'Hara, Beetlejuice), a modestly talented character actress, hears of an Internet rumor that she might be nominated for the dubious movie she's currently making, Home for Purim. Soon buzz is flying about all the rest of the cast (which includes Harry Shearer and Parker Posey) and everyone starts clawing for as much attention as they can get while appearing modest and unambitious. Despite the movie's target being so familiar to them, For Your Consideration is not Guest & Co.'s best work--in an effort to give everyone in the huge cast face time, few of the characters gain any comic traction or have a particularly engaging storyline; the mockery stays on a fairly surface level. Nonetheless, some of those surfaces are pretty funny: Fred Willard and Jane Lynch are devastating as a pair of predatory infotainment hosts, while Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde) turns in a daffy and surreal performance. Throughout, the movie's anchor is O'Hara; the way her character is virtually crushed by the hype has a surprising richness and depth. She remains a cinematic treasure. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Debut feature director Jay Berman (Christopher Guest), steers cast and crew through a typically tumultuous independent film Home for Purim, an intimate period drama about a Jewish family's turbulent reunion on the occasion of the dying matriarch's favorite holiday. When Internet-generated rumors begin circulating that three of Purim's stars -- faded luminary Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara), journeyman actor and former hot dog pitchman Victor Allan Miller (Harry Shearer), and ingenue Callie Webb (Parker Posey) -- may be perpetrating Award-worthy performances, a rumble of excitement rattles the cast. Once "Hollywood Now" anchors Chuck Porter (Fred Willard) and Cindy Martin (Jane Lynch) pick up the buzz, Award fever infects the entire production. Unit publicist Corey Taft (John Michael Higgins), talent agent Morley Orfkin (Eugene Levy), and producer Whitney Taylor Brown (Jennifer Coolidge) all smell the sudden potential for a sleeper hit. As does Sunfish Classics President Martin Gibb (Ricky Gervais), who suggests some last-minute changes to the film that he feels will broaden the film's appeal. Meanwhile, Purim's screenwriters, Lane Iverson (Michael McKean) and Philip Koontz (Bob Balaban) grow steadily more horrified as they watch the first film adaptation of their work diverge from their original story. As the hopeful Purim team careens toward the end of production and the upcoming Award season, tenuous relationships and brittle dreams play out in unexpected ways...

4 out of 5 stars Funny show.......2007-07-03

This film, like all the rest of their films was very funny. But you have to appreciate the humor of this type. Not all people get it. My spouse didn't get it, but I love these actors together. They can be hilarious, you just have to understand where they are coming from and what they are trying to do. If you like "Best in Show" or their others, you'll love this one too.

1 out of 5 stars SADLY,.......WATCHING......PAINT.....DRY......IS.....MORE,,,,,,EXCITING ) :.......2007-06-30

I TRULY WANTED TO LIKE THIS MOVIE.....for I am a very, very big
Christopher Guest fan. He is a member of the English aristocracy
-- I am a dyed-in-the wool Anglophile. He can act, produce, direct,
and write music. I have acted, and I have written many melodies.
He is a Liberal. I am a Moderate, who can see good in ALL well-mean-
ing people. He is married to the American actress, Jamie Lee Curtis.
I am an American, born in Brooklyn, New York!

So you would think I would be excited, delighted, and thrilled to see
my first Christopher Guest film. And I really was -- until I saw the
movie. I am very, very sad to say that "For Your Consideration" was
one of the three worst films I have ever seen. (I KNOW there must be
at least two other films I disliked as much....I just can't seem to
think of their names at the moment....)

This "comedy" did not make me laugh once. Some the actors tried hard
to make a go of this lame movie. (Forgive me, parapalegics, but
seems to be the only term that will fit here -- and no human para-
palegic -- or quadraplegic -- could ever be as "lame" as this movie
is.) But no actor -- not even Sir Laurence Olivier -- could make
this agonizing movie shine for the audience.

I have tried, very hard, to find SOME good scenes in this movie. And
you know what -- I actually have! ( : The "telephone answering
machine message" scene was very well done, and very well directed!
"The Purim Song" has a nice, authentic-without-being embarrassing
melody, good words, and a nice rendition. The "Change-the-name
Argument" scene is good, and points out some all-too-painful truths.
And Catherine O'Hara, (or is that her make-up artist and hairstylist?),
does/do show how to look younger and younger, with surprisingly few
hair and make-up changes.)

Even in a desert, one can find an oasis or two. But there is nothing
here that you can't see in other, far better movies.

This is a "Warner Independent Pictures" film. I had never heard of
WIP films before, and have seen none of them. But the very label of
"Warner Independent Pictures", (especially as applied to "For Your
Consideration"), cannot help but make me think of the words, usually
given just before a TV infomercial is seen, which go something like:
"The following is a paid advertisement. It represents the opinions
of the manufacturers and producers. This station has no responsibil-
ity as to what us being said." I may be very wrong here, but seems
to me that Warner Brothers, in classifying, "For Your Consideration",
as a Warner Independent Film, wanted as little responsibility for the
contents as possible. In my opinion, sadly, with good reason.

As I mentioned, this is the very first Christopher Guest movie I have
ever seen. Because of his reputation, because I am a fan of his, and
because of the glowing reviews of his other films, it will NOT be the
last one I see. On the contrary, I intend to see ALL his other films!
Everyone is entitled to one mistake, after all. "For Your Consider-
ation", has got to be Christopher Guest's one mistake. Unfunny and
verging on boring audiences into a stupour, Mr. Guest did not just
"lay an egg" here. No -- although it truly pains me to say so --
"For Your Consideration", instead resembles a chicken-farm, where eggs
are laid by the tens of dozens every day. ) :

P.S. I got this DVD from the library -- I didn't waste a cent on it!
The best parts of this DVD -- for me, anyway -- were previews for
three other Warner Brothers films: "The Painted Veil", "Words and
Music", and "Lucky You". All are very different from each other --
but each seems to be a good movie, which I'd be interested in seeing!
Especially when viewing "For Your Consideration", it's heartening to
know that there ARE movies, still being made, that are exciting,
engrossing, and interesting to see!

P.P.S.: Better luck next time, Sir Christopher! I KNOW that your
POST-"For Your Consideration" movies -- like your PRE-"For Your
Consideration" movies -- will be much, (and considerably!!!) better
than this one, unfortunate goof! I'll eagerly be awaiting them!
Thanks!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A humorless romp--or am I just goin' meshuga?.......2007-06-25

For Your Consideration tries to be a comedy that pokes fun relentlessly at the people and the politics of the movie industry---but it never really arrives. As one reviewer notes, it DOES appear that the director and maybe even the cast just plain lost interest in making this one fly. They released an egg instead.

The casting is actually quite good; we get Parker Posey as a newcomer movie actress named Callie Webb, Catherine O'Hara as an aging and faded starlet actress named Marilyn Hack and Harry Shearer as the never quite made it actor Victor Allan Miller. Marilyn, Callie and Victor play the principle actors in an indie movie being made entitled Home For Purim. Things are going along just average--until, that is, rumors abound that Marilyn Hack (Catherine O'Hara) will be nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the movie. Of course, things heat up when both Callie Webb (Parker Posey) and Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer) hear that one of them may get an Oscar nomination, too. Inevitably, almost everyone involved with the production of the film greedily smells a sleeper hit and tries to mold the movie into something more mainstream to increase the chances of it making it somewhere into "Oscarland."

Unfortunately the jokes don't work too much of the time. "Hollywood Now" anchors Chuck Porter (Fred Willard) and Cindy Martin (Jane Lynch) represent a half-baked attempt to spoof Hollywood gossip TV shows; but their talents are somewhat wasted by the flat script. I found it mildly amusing that the studio changes the name from Home For Purim to Home For Thanksgiving; and the histrionics of newcomer actress Callie Webb are so exaggerated that they are often campy. The plot twists and turns a bit as relationships between the principle actors in the film are changed very quickly by just the rumors of an Oscar nomination. And, of course, the Home For Purim script writers become increasingly uncomfortable as their "baby," their movie script, changes more and more into something they never intended it to be.

The choreography reflects good judgment; I liked the crowd scenes on the studio lots and the "movie within the movie" is handled very neatly by the choreographers. At the same time the cinematography shines best when we get the movie within the movie scenes as well as the talk show scenes.

I wish I could say that the movie jokes were hilarious and that the convincing acting shined brightly. However, I can't. The mostly tepid jokes didn't give a single belly laugh; and I agree with the reviewer who writes that Catherine O'Hara probably does give the best performance of all the actors in this film. It's a real shame, too--movies about Hollywood and the film industry have so much potential; and it feels as if this movie project was either too neglected or a product of people too scared to take the chances necessary to do this movie the way it should have been done.

The DVD has some deleted scenes and some optional commentary; but otherwise the extras are remarkably slim. I would have liked a featurette about the making of this movie; but it's not there.

Overall, Home For Purim taxis down the runway--and then stops short, never taking off. I felt disappointed because the movie had so much potential, especially with the fine actors they chose for these roles. I give it three stars--one star for choreography, a second star for cinematography and a third star for actors who would have been truly great in their roles if they had been given the right script to work with. Rent it if you must; but I wouldn't buy it. Sigh.

3 out of 5 stars Lack of originality in subject matter dulls edge in latest film from Guest team.......2007-06-18

Christopher Guest's mockumentaries occupy a beloved place in my film library, so it's safe to say that I had very high expectations for this movie. Long story short, those expectations were dashed.

"For Your Consideration" has all the hallmarks of the usual success for Guest and his team gifted comics. Inherently ridiculous people (B-minus list actors and filmmakers) throw themselves with gusto into a ridiculous activity (making a third-rate drama) with no knowledge of how ridiculous they are. This was the engine for all the other great Guest movies. So what went wrong?

Quite simply, Hollywood has already sent itself up a gazillion times. We really hadn't seen rock-n-roll skewered as it was in "Spinal Tap," and to be sure "Best in Show" has done wonders bringing attention to the Eukenuba World Dog Championships. But when it comes to making fun of Hollywood, it's been done before, and done very well - "Get Shorty," "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," and "Swimming With Sharks" leap to mind as recent successful takes on the Hollywood lifestyle . . . and then there's Robert Altman's "The Player."

So what could Guest and his team do this time around? Answer - not much. They have a clever plot - what happens when terrible actors start seriously believing that they have a shot at an Oscar? But we have seen the vain actor skewered so many times that nothing really comes across as inspired. Well, there's one exception - Catherine O'Hara's transformation from aging has-been actress to botox-and-silicon-enhanced Bo Derek clone is just priceless. It's also a wee bit scary.

True to form, there are some classic one-liners in "FYC" that you will remember for a long time ("We don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, because it leaves you with a wet, critically injured baby," is a personal favorite.) But for Guest movies, we expect so much more.

There are those who say that a bad Christopher Guest comedy is much funnier than the average comedy released by Hollywood today. "FYC" is the movie for testing that hypothesis.

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Titled "Breaking Wind".......2007-06-13

Like its title, this whole movie is a little too off-kilter. It has a little too much miss in its hit-or-miss. It seems the Christopher Guest series might be running out of steam.

We have here most of the trademark qualities of other Guest films such as "Waiting for Guffman" and "A Mighty Wind." We have the gentle spoofing of people's self-involvement. We have a cast of characters whose conversational gambits always seem to just sail past each other, failing to stop and make a rescue of the other's droll drowning. We have affectation and eccentricity.

And the movie's premise is interesting enough. This is a film about the film industry. More specifically, it's about the Hollywood rumor mill, which in this case starts churning out Oscar buzz over an obviously very Grade B historical film that the Guest characters are all involved in producing. Everyone's hopes are raised; everyone's egos get further inflated.

But somehow, this time most of it just doesn't ring true. It's all like the spiky Mohawk hairdo Fred Willard sports as host of a morning talk show. It just wouldn't happen. And most damaging, we have no focus for our caring here, as we did with the coming-out-of-retirement folk singers in "A Mighty Wind." All the characters in "For Your Consideration" are too fabricated this time around, and might as well have just been going around breaking wind.

William H. Macy, a longtime collaborator of David Mamet, takes on one of Mamet's biggest, ugliest creations in the title role of Edmond. Edmond drops out of his ordinary life after a chance encounter with a fortune-teller, and cruises through a New York inferno that leads to murder. It also leads to a great deal of the clipped, counter-punching dialogue that Mamet is famous for, although at times the film plays like a monologue interrupted by peripheral blips on Edmond's skewed radar. Mamet's subject is the frenzied reaction of the modern male to the narrowing of his domain, a crisis that drives Edmond to the familiar touchstones of bar, peep show, and whorehouse, none of which provide the solace he thinks they should. The 2005 film is based on Mamet's 1982 play, and somehow the picture might have had more pop if it had been filmed closer to that time, when panicked masculinity was a fresher subject. And the text is a kind of dark, horrific fable that probably worked better in the stylized realm of the stage than on film. Stuart Gordon directs with a blunt forward motion that foregrounds the most unsavory aspects of the material (fans of his Re-Animator should note the presence of Jeffrey Combs as a snotty hotel clerk). Except for Macy, cast members come and go in the episodic flow, some of them (Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pidgeon) identified with Mamet's work. Julia Stiles plays the unfortunate waitress who falls into Edmond's path, and Bai Ling, Denise Richards, and Mena Suvari are women of the night who want to charge Edmond too much money. But it's Macy's show, and he mercilessly gets inside Edmond's bad self: a monster of entitlement and self-delusion, given to epiphanies that lead nowhere except his own ego. --Robert Horton

Description

A man (Macy) becomes involved in a twisted game of sex, lies and murder with 3 young women (Denise Richards, Mena Suvari, Julia Stiles). It's a first rate thriller from the legendary David Mamet.

2 out of 5 stars effective.......2007-07-03

Much of the film is predictable but I watched it mainly to see how far it would go. The main character in this film who comes across as mild mannered gets kicked out by his wife which starts a cascade of negative reactions. Frustrated over his situation, he takes to the streets going to strip joints, peep shows and massage parlors. As the night goes on, he runs into street hustlers and puts his life at risk, getting mugged. Finally, his rage gets the best of him and then he puts himself in the last place he'd want to be. Then he has no other choice but to be content in his position and make the best of it. Ironically, in some ways it seems he has finally come to terms with himself and is better off than he had been with his wife.

5 out of 5 stars a brilliant film based on a brilliant mamet play.......2007-06-29

When I originally saw Edmond I was too disturbed to appreciate or like it. It is admittedly a disturbing film with shocking moments of violence and cruelty. It is also a brilliant film that shows what happens realistically to someone who is primed to explode. William H Macy in his best performance plays Edmond Burke. We first meet him at his job where his meeting with his boss has been pushed back. We sense his frustration. He gets onto an elevator and sees a young couple making out, we also sense his frustration over this. On his way home from work he stops off at a fortune teller who predicts some dark things in his future and tells him "He is not where he belongs." Motivated by this Edmond goes home and informs his wife ( Rebecca Pidgeon, Mamet's real life wife) that he no longer loves her and is leaving her. The rest of the film is Edmond prowling the New York streets at night looking for what is missing in his life. This includes sex and he goes to strip clubs and then to peep shows but nothing satisfies him. It is only when violence occurs first to him and then Edmond's own retaliation that Edmond begins to feel alive again. In short he comes to terms with his racism, homophobia, sexual frustration, and overall rage that he has suppressed for his fourty seven years. This is a very dark film that is offensive due to its subject matter but Mamet's writing and all the acting especially Julia Stiles is so realistic and believable. Its Macy's show and his acting is amazing. In the course of this ninety minute film you sympathize with him in the beginning and you laugh with him in some of the lighter scenes and then you are ultimately terrified with his actions. I highly recommend this film as brilliant writing, superb acting, and brilliant directing. It is a dark and violent and disturbing film but is rewarding after a few viewings. The DVD features two great commentaries one by director Stuart Gordon and two of the producers and one by David Mamet. Mamet's commentary is like his dialouge some calm or quiet moments punctuated by sudden bursts of tough talk.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Non Horror Gordon Film.......2007-06-27

I really enjoyed this movie. I can't believe a Stuart Gordon film somehow slipped under my radar! I had to hear about this film from my dad! How do you like them apples? Though I certainly wouldn't call this film artsy, it's one of those that you can take from it what you want, and different people seem to have different interpretations of it's meaning. When you see a guy on the street or in a subway ranting and raving and acting like a loon, you wonder who is that guy and what's his story? What happened to him to make him like this, etc? I tend to view this movie as a kind of backstory to one of these characters, but that's probably not the intent, nor what other people think of when they watch this. The film is a bit like After Hours in the sense that it deals with a guy who's pretty much lost in his own city over the course of one night while terrible things happen all around him. But, in this film, Macy seems to be the cause of all the misery as opposed to being on the receiving end. The film basically shows Macy, who's gone off the deep end from the start, gradually going more insane as the night progresses, resulting in some horrific stuff. Macy's an actor I've always liked, but never really payed too much attention to. He was just always kinda "there" for me, but in this movie he really gets your attention and comes off as a very convincing, sad and dangerous man on the edge. The film was originally performed as a stage play written by David Mamet, and it shows. The film does play out as though it were a play, which will turn some folks off, calling it "boring" or "pointless". Alot of reviewers here keep bringing up Mamet, Mamet, Mamet. Very few reviewers bring up the fact that Stuart Gordon directed this movie, and fewer still acknowledge his contribution. Sure, the screenplay and dialog is all Mamet without a doubt. This is indeed a Stuart Gordon movie though. His presence is just as evident as Mamet's. It may not be one of his horror films, but fans will be able to identify the style. He seems to be one of the few directors who can make films outside his usual genre and still maintain the same "feel"(King Of The Ants was another great example). Sure, it is a bit more cerebral than most of Gordon's previous work, but that's most likely the Mamet influence. Definitely worth a look for fans of Gordon, Mamet and William H Macy.

4 out of 5 stars Edmond Burke, WM47.......2007-06-14

I am a Mamet lover. I thought Edmond was a terrific read as a play, and would be very interested in seeing it performed on stage. I was pleasantly surprised after watching this Edmond, that it retained the swiftness and grit of his paradoxical spiraling-into-the-depths-of-depravity/transcending-of-himself-in-the-world.

Without a doubt William H. Macy, who for anyone who doesn't know this, is along with castmates Joe Mantegna and Rebecca Pidgeon (Mamet's wife), an expert in playing Mamet. His presence as Edmond Burke gives the film as much cache as the fact Mamet wrote the screenplay. His scene with Mantegna early on is one of the best too.

As for my pleasant surprise I am reminded that I have been disappointed by some of Mamet's original films (Heist, Spartan and State & Main were all overstuffed, not lean enough, with too many twists and turns) but have enjoyed the adaptations of his plays (Lakeboat, American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross). This maybe due to the unity of his spare style and the limitations of space a play, even one adapted to screen, must exist within.

This film's use of recognizable faces in single scenes was perhaps a consequence of Mamet's respect in the industry, and maybe an attempt at marketing a sordid and deep story beyond any expected attention. All performers get the chance to needle Macy's Edmond, with the acceptable duplicity of routine interactions, propelling him deeper into the ecstacy of ridding himself of himself. The brilliance of the story is that he must become everything he never wanted to (john, racist, murderer, homosexual) in order to be where he belongs. Constantly being lied to has rendered him inert, thus a double time dose of truth or passion or rage or unconsciousness must be his salvation. That's what Mamet is able to create and convey, the ancient philosophical paradox of achieving bliss or something like it, by destroying the existence one has spent so much energy creating, here amidst the dark places of our modern world (bars, tarot readers, strip joints, back alleys, dingy apartments, prisons, subways....remember, he never does enter the church)....

4 out of 5 stars A story about a man who was out of touch with his spirit.......2007-06-05

The beginning of the film shows the re-connection of the spirit of a man who has been sleepwalking for years. He projects his weakness onto his surroundings and throws the baby out with the bathwater. After severing all ties with his old life he begins his metaphysical and physical descent into the underworld.
The film delves deeply into Edmonds sexual dysfunction and uses his inability to feel and express sexual energy as the core of his rage and later instability.
The film also weaves this into tales about how a white man deals with real life on the streets out of his coccoon. Obviously he doesnt do well as his sense of entitlement and priviledge arent catered to.
On the streets Edmond reconnects with some forgotten primal energy that was lost in his mundane life, he confuses this with some kind of spiritual enlightenment.
This aggressive energy leads him to very bad places.
Which finally culminates in the end of the creation that is Edmond and his spiritual rebirth in very trying circumstances.
The film is very intellectually interesting, it seems to have slightly missed the mark in the emotional and realistic side of things. Some scenes that should have greater impact felt almost comical. Its still very entertaining but it doesnt have the emotional impact of say a Lynch film.
All around a worthy and interesting look at the human spirit, and the illusions of the mind. I give it 4 stars.

For a look at a "Killer," New York Doll is a surprisingly tender portrait. But then Arthur "Killer" Kane, bass player for the New York Dolls, was a gentle soul at heart. In his feature film debut, director Greg Whiteley ably explores the dichotomy between the stone-faced rocker with the "killer" bass lines and the mild-mannered librarian at LA's Mormon Family History Center. Kane never had much of a home life, but he loved rock and roll, and found a second family with the Dolls. It was, to say the least, a dysfunctional one. Fame came fast, but money didn't follow, and the band imploded "because of our bad behavior." Kane struggled with alcohol and other problems before finding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1980s. He turned his life around, but refused to let go of the past. He wanted to get the band back together. Jerry Nolan and Johnny Thunders died in the 1990s, but Kane's dream didn't. "For 30 years I was ignored and told that I was a loser," he states. Whiteley doesn't preach or condescend, but allows Kane to tell his own story, bolstered by comments from friends and associates. As Morrissey, who kick-started the group's 2004 London reunion, explains, "For everybody there's an artist that captures you at just the right time... The Dolls were that for me." Featuring David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, Iggy Pop, Chrissie Hynde, and Mick Jones, New York Doll was nominated for the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Arthur Kane of the legendary band the New York Dolls rockets to the top of the glam rock scene. Then with the death of a band member, the group bottoms out and eventually splits up. Arthur disappears from the music scene and in a surprising twist of fate, becomes a Mormon librarian. Years later, Morrissey (of the Smiths) offers Arthur the opportunity to go back into the spotlight and revisit a life he thought was lost forever. New York Doll is a heartfelt story about second chances and an incredible music journey.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Moving and emotional.......2007-04-20

i can not say enough about this film. This film is so moving that even someone who has not heard of the dolls would love this. A documentary about killer kane and how his dream is to reunite with his friends and play a show with the dolls. After watching this i do think about arthur often. Im not really quite sure why i think about him but i would have to guess it is because of how moved i was by this and how beautiful a man arthur. i can truly say i will never forget him even though ive never met him he seems like a old friend. Just get this! You won't regret it

5 out of 5 stars There Isn't Enough Praise.......2007-04-09

There is a reason that this movie is getting high praise. It's not the camera work, which is amateurish at best. It's not the careful planning, because if there ever was a case of a filmmaker stumbling on a perfect story, this is it. What makes this film so good is absolute honesty framing a near perfect story.

When I first started this dvd I was leery. It started with this guy, Arthur Kane, a stuttering former musician with a mostly failed life. He had achieved a level of acceptance as a convert to the Mormon Church which led to a simple life. As an employee of the Church at the Family History Center, he was leading a quiet life, a friendly life with people around him who accepted him for being Arthur and had no idea that he'd been the bass guitarist for the New York Dolls, the original glam-rock band. In his music days he was a hard-drinking wild dressing rock star with a penchant for excitement and a taste for the illicit.

As I said, I was leery. As a former Mormon, I was immediately suspect as the filmmaker included interviews with church authorities and Arthur's home teachers (as it turns out, the filmmaker himself was one of Arthur's home teachers, which explains his "right place at the right time" success in making a powerful documentary). Arthur stuttered through his explanations of his previous life and his conversion. He seemed unsure about everything in his life, an unlikely hero in any story much less his own.

But that changed with the revelation that Arthur was to go to a reunion concert in London being organized by Morrisey (formerly of the Smiths, now solo). Then we see Arthur revealing his history and discussing his anxiousness at being reunited with former bandmate and estranged friend David Johansen. Interviews proceed throughout by friends from the seventies, musicians who admired the Dolls and Arthur, and even his ex-wife whom he had beaten with cat furniture in a drunken rage before attempting suicide.

I admit that I got wrapped up in the movie and forgot all my trepidations, left behind with my own anxiety for Arthur "Killer" Kane. He hadn't played guitar in years and even had to borrow money to get his instruments out of perpetual hock at a local pawn shop. Would he be able to get into form, would he still "have it," would the tensions of reuniting be the major story, and would they actually get onto stage in London? All these questions became foremost in my mind, with Arthur's faith and the film making itself forgotten, just part of the scenery as it should be.

I can't really tell you any more, because it'll give away too much of a powerful story. I will say that he led his band-mates in prayer and I actually wanted to say Amen. And, I will say that I had tears in my eyes at the end. I will also say that if it'd been fiction, I'd have been screaming at the screen that it never happens that way in real life.

I'll also say, watch this movie.

- CV Rick

5 out of 5 stars Killer Doc.......2007-03-07

Really well done story. Riveting. One of those docs that captures a human episode at just the right time. Well shot and well edited. But, as a film lover, it's interesting to note the difference in image quality from the US footage to the UK. Obviously a better camera and possibly a better shooter. No offense to the US shooter.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet.......2007-03-05

This is a disturbing film worth seeing. The subject of the film, Arthur "Killer" Kane, seems to be in a trance as do all the other "Mormons" in the film. Arthur is obviously a kind hearted & talented man but seems eerily empty & lost, particularly in contrast to the other gifted musicians in the film like Morissey & David Johansen. I can't shake the feeling that this was meant to be an LDS propaganda film gone terribly wrong. After wathcing this I felt like I'd just driven by a bad car crash...

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-02-23

It looks as if this film began its life as some sort of Mormon propoganda. What it ultimately became was a literal Swan Song for original New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane. Kane had become a bitter drug casualty, resentful of his brief time in the spotlight. His frustration and confusion eventually culminated in a window-dive that he thankfully survived. Then it appears that Kane was reborn, starting a new, humble, self-reflective life in the Mormon church, the relative importance of so-called stardom now in perspective. When the fan-singer Morrissey brings the surviving Dolls together for a "one-off," we are privileged to witness Kane's life full-circle. What a wonderful example of a man at peace Kane is, comfortably deflecting David Johanssen's mocking arrogance, only basking in the cameraderie they share in their music. Suffice it to say that the ending of this beautiful, tragic story could not have been scripted. Like "American Beauty," except real. You have to see it for yourself.

It's too bad Jack Bauer was busy solving an international terrorist crisis. As seen with unflinching eyes in this wickedly entertaining documentary, Kiefer Sutherland could have used the organizational powers of his 24-star alter-ego to help him with his duties as road manager of a burgeoning rock band. Sutherland is exposed as steadfast devotee of Rocco DeLuca & The Burden as he tries his best to manage the details of the band's brief winter, 2005 tour of Europe. In addition to his career as a famous actor, Sutherland is also co-founder of the indie record label Ironworks Music, and as I Trust You to Kill Me proves, he's clearly the #1 fan of Ironworks' up-and-comers Rocco DeLuca & The Burden. The band's tour of small clubs took them to London, Dublin, Reykjavík, Berlin, and points in between. Director Manu Boyer lets his camera linger over the best and worst of it all. Some of the worst is of Sutherland as he ineptly (but utterly sincerely) tries to pump the band up at every opportunity, whether it's doing radio promos, hauling heavy amps into a London nightclub in the freezing cold, or slyly handing out tickets in Dublin pubs and street corners for an undersold show. It's hilarious to see him simultaneously exploiting and enjoying his celebrity status with passersby--some of whom know who he is, others only vaguely realizing that they ought to know who he is. Director Boyer also does some nosy prodding into Sutherland's private life, especially after he's hefted a few pints (the clip of Sutherland taking a drunken running dive into the Christmas tree in a posh London hotel was brief a YouTube smash after the film first aired on VH-1). We see the crawling-up end of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle from Sutherland's point of view and from the band's. Though it's certainly not the best rock concert movie, there is some terrific footage of The Burden performing their bloozy brand of rock behind DeLuca's raw wail. In spite of Sutherland's "help," the band may have a good chance at gaining a following. I Trust You to Kill Me (the title of The Burden's first album) documents both a personal journey for Kiefer Sutherland and a glimpse at the hardscrabble of a band clawing their way up. On both counts it's great fun and a terrific piece of rock 'n' roll entertainment. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars Lets go on a concert tour.......2007-07-03

This movie is great, you feel you are traveling with Kiefer Sutherland and the band all the way there and back.

Kiefer's ability to seem so reachable is awesome.
The band has such a tremendous talent,
it seems you are experiencing the beginning of an incredible future
for this guys. Rocco DeLuca and The Burden totally rock.

This movie is a most have. Not only because is such
an intimate time with Kiefer Sutherland, but it gives you an insight
in what is like to be a rock band, if only for a few minutes at a time...

Great movie/documentary/video...loved it!!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and nice.......2007-05-17

This is a very nice documentary film. It shows work, dream, music, friendship and funny things happening as the days goes.
I like it very much!

5 out of 5 stars Need More Like It.......2007-05-13

It's too bad more bands/managers don't take the time to make these music documentary films. There is definitely a market for them. This one was presented perfectly. I purchased it prior to the bands CD, so I hadn't heard the astounding range of Rocco Delucca's voice. What an amazing vocalist! This DVD is well worth it simply for that experience. Kiefer drinks and smokes much too much, but the DVD reveals a very personable side of him.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Insiteful.......2007-04-10

This documentary gave me a view of life for a new band trying to make it. It is also a big name actor "Kiefer Sutherland" letting viewers in on his life in an amazingly personal way. I loved the band and their music. I thought the DVD was entertaining, funny and touching.

5 out of 5 stars The real value is deeper...........2007-03-22

For me this is ultimately about Kiefer. A grown man who has tremendous success but at this point in his life seems very sad and lonely. Still looking for his father's love and approval. Still looking for something more meaningful. Having been a hugh fan of Kiefer's for years and having watched his career highs and lows over the last 20+ years, most of the intimate conversations with Kiefer in this documentary brought me to tears.
It is well worth seeing. The band is great and you can easily see how Kiefer became such a big fan. I can't help but feel he was trying to live out a boyhood fantasy (of being a rock star) that didn't turn out as he hoped it would.

Amazon.com essential video

Struggling filmmaker Mark Borchardt is the subject of American Movie, and he may also be the most determined man you'll ever meet. The straggly haired, fast-talking, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, native lists his greatest influences as Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He began making horror movies as a gangly adolescent, and is now set on finishing Coven (which he pronounces like "woven"), the "35-minute direct market thriller" he has worked on for two years. In the process, he steadfastly battles immense debt, the threat of losing his kids, and birds chirping gleefully through scenes set in the dead of winter. His mother would rather do her shopping than be an extra, his brother contends he's best suited for factory work, and his father just wants him to "watch the language."

Standing by him through it all is Mark's childhood buddy, Mike Schank, who is the strongest weapon against drug use a task force could ever hope for, and Uncle Bill, begrudging financier of Coven, who appears to be wasting away before our very eyes. In less perceptive hands these two could easily become caricatures--the burnt-out stoner and the crotchety old coot--but through director Chris Smith's lens we see why Mark loves them, why they love Mark, and why each of these stories is uniquely compelling.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, the film has been compared to Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman--two unquestionably hilarious mock-documentaries--and, indeed, American Movie has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. But in the spoofs, we feel encouraged to point and giggle at the poor slobs trying to get a piece of the action. Smith, however, offers us a funny and overwhelmingly affectionate portrait; you may sit down expecting to laugh at Mark's pie-in-the-sky hopes, but you soon find yourself bursting with admiration. "The American dream stays with me each and every day," Mark says, and by the end, we want nothing more than for it to come true. (The DVD version includes the complete short film "Coven.") --Brangien Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wayne's World Meets Quentin Tarantino.......2007-04-12

I just loved this film. The main character is something of a redneck Mozart- all heart and dreams, with no sense of the everyday realities that most of us must tackle, like paying the bills. In a world where getting ahead and climbing the company ladder is all important, it is so refreshing to see that artists like this still exist in small town America.

5 out of 5 stars Best documentary of a low budget filmmaker you'll ever see.......2007-02-02

IMDB reviews cover this movie pretty well. However, this documentary is a sad, uplifting, and fascinating project. I also went to school with Mark Borchardt (the subject of the film) and Chris Smith (the director of this documentary) in 1995, so the film means that much more to me on a personal level. This documentary won the audience GRAND JURY PRIZE at Sundance back in (1999?) and put Mark B. and his cohort (Mike Shenk) on the indie filmmaking "map".

And, because I know about the filmmakers personally, I can tell you that this film will make you look at low budget filmmaking, and the dedication any film or artistic endeavor takes, in a whole new light. The DVD should also have the bonus film COVEN, the film which is the subject within the documentary. I worked on COVEN for one day. I love Mark B. but I will never work on a film with him again:-) You'll see why when you watch the documentary and the extras. Best of luck to Chris, Sarah (Price), Mark, and Mike!

5 out of 5 stars I love this film to death........2006-09-25

I love this film to death. It touches my heart in ways no other films have. It uninhibitedly and unpretentiously captures the greasy, smudged fingerprints of a real human being as he creates something straight from his soul.

Be what you are. Live life. Order the cheeseburger if you want it and be proud of your ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best..........2006-09-16

American movie must be watched repeatedly. Each time you view, you will find more & more. Only in Wisconsin can this type of true talent be found. If you don't watch this film, please turn in your human being card, & go back to where people have no minds or souls. 123becky

5 out of 5 stars "R.I.P Uncle Bill".......2006-06-10

O.K. I absolutely LOVE this film. I've seen this movie about four times now and I usually wonder if it is real or not. The movie is so well done and edited so beautifully, that I wonder if this is scripted with paid actors. I've seen that Mike Schank in a couple other movies, so I dont know. Anyway, I'm not trying to give this a bad review. Chris Smith is a genius. He is the best documentary filmmaker, I have seen so far. I had friends exactly like Mark and Mike, so I could totally relate to them, which is cool. This film is also very inspiring and educational to anyone who wants to make a movie. They dont give you step-by-step instructions or anything, but it gives you an idea of how its done.
Step 1.Money
Step 2.Lots of reliable, dedicated people
Step 3.Money & Equipment
Step 4.Determination and No Sleep
and finally step 5.Money
I highly recommend this film. It also has the movie "Coven", that Mark was making, during the film, in the special features. "Coven" is also a great mini-movie! I almost died laughing when Mark was trying to get Uncle Bill to just do one line of dialouge, and it took like thirty takes.

5 out of 5 stars Dispatch.......2007-06-13

Get this movie if you want to watch the story about way more than the money you can make in the music industry. Dispatch never sold out to the mass appeal and kept making music that their true fans would listen to.

I wasnt able to make it to the Last Dispatch concert, so was waiting a long time to see this dvd. The dvd does a great job documenting Dispatch from their beginning to the end. Music is of course great. Seeing all the people at the Last Dispatch concert was truly amazing.
I recommend this DVD to any Dispatch fan.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate but dissapointing.......2007-01-12

If you love Dispatch then I would definitely recommend watching this movie. However, I found it disappointing in that the movie presents a side of the band I would have rather not seen. There is some obvious tension within the members and they seem to bicker over nothing throughout the film. They are not as tight as many loyal fans would assume.

5 out of 5 stars Dispatch, and thats it.......2007-01-08

I have followed Dispatch from the late 90`s. and this is defenetly the best band i have ever listen to.
Regretfully i did not have the opertunity to be there i Boston at the last Dispatch,(job, and all the way from Norway) but i am the the proud owner of all the Dispatch albums and some of the soloworks.
If you are considering to buy somthing from Dispatch, just buy, and you will be positivly suprised.
The Last Dispatch lets you get to know the band as they were, and are.
You will be hooked.

Be Cool takes its own advice: It's slick, Hollywood entertainment that kills two amusing hours with relative ease and comfort. Better than leftovers but not as tasty as a full-course meal, this sequel to 1995's hit comedy Get Shorty (and based on Elmore Leonard's 1999 sequel novel) finds former loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) itching to get out of the movie business, so he hooks up with a newly widowed music executive (Uma Thurman) to launch the career of an up-'n-coming Beyoncé-like singer (newcomer Christina Milian). A mock-black manager (Vince Vaughn), his sleazy boss (Harvey Keitel), and an upscale gangsta-rap executive (Cedric the Entertainer) all have a competing stake in the fast-rising pop diva's future, and this sets the plot rolling in a fun but rather hand-me-down fashion that lacks the savvy panache of Get Shorty but still provides plenty of lightweight humor. The Rock and Outkast's André Benjamin provide the best laughs in supporting roles that effortlessly relieve the movie from the symptoms of sequelitis. --Jeff Shannon

Description

When Chili Palmer (Travolta) decides to try his hand in the music industry, he romances thesultry widow (Thurman) of a recently whacked music exec, poaches a hot young singer (Christina Milian) from a rival label and discovers that the record industry is packin' a whole lot more than a tune!

2 out of 5 stars The reason to watch: Vince Vaughn as a pimp/producer/manager.......2007-04-12

There is one reason and one reason only to see Be Cool: the outrageous performance of Vince Vaughn as Roggie, a would-be music producer/manager who thinks he's black. Seriously. Between the Burberry jogging suits, gold chains, played out slang, and Pimps Up Hoes Down attitude I was almost amused enough not to notice that the rest of this movie was absolute [..]. Almost, but not quite.

So if you're going to watch this movie, go ahead and fast forward to all the scenes with Roggie because the rest of it is more or less useless. That's my two cents.

5 out of 5 stars Be Cool.......2007-01-09

Often times the sequel doesn't measure up. This isn't the case with Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty. You will laugh, and laugh, and laugh. And this is truly a great family movie. No bad language, or nudity. Our family watches this movie alot in our truck traveling, or in our home when there's nothing on television. Buy it, you'll love it too!

1 out of 5 stars You wanna know what immoral means?.......2006-12-28

Immoral is not Miss Nevada's private parts. Immoral is not two guys holding each others' cranks, or Miss USA getting drunk. What harm have they done? Values you say? Then let's talk about this movie. Immoral is glorifying the garbage values of fame and greed that are defacing our mental landscape and reducing us to nothing. THAT is immoral. Immoral is creating a film that appeals to youth and tells them that beating people to death is funny or even cool. It's telling us that 9mm shootings, recording sessions and cellphones are approximately equal, and that in all cases it's brand recognition that counts. It's the obscene money that the entertainment industry successfully reaps from a population that is increasingly working near minimum wage, and then has the gall to legally pursue if they share MP3s. Immoral is everything that this film throws at you, and that it's "skillfully" constructed with. It's the "money and power is everything" lie that allows our corporations to ship all our jobs to desperate third world people who will now join us in this spiral towards the bottom, while we be out of work. If you can watch this without your brain or your heart telling you that there IS something really wrong, you have been put to sleep. I'm no old lady moralizer or religious zealot. I don't object to Kill Bill, or Natural Born Killers, I don't think I can quite put my finger on the difference right now, and I don't think the Da Vinci Code or Passion Of Christ are irreverent, but this movie calls for the wrath of the Lord to rain down on the perpetrators. Scientology, Mr Travolta? Well, at least the other stooges in this farce don't claim to have a philosophy other than money. Repulsive! Don't pay for this. If you can see it for free, think it over, and put your thoughts together on what is happening to us, do.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2007-07-01

As a long time fan of Gale Harold's, it's been a privilege to watch him develop into an amazing actor.

And quite fascinating to watch Mr. Harold portray a racist, confederate flag waving redneck, since the film character represents the polar opposite of Mr. Harold's personal views.

Powerful story, beautiful cinematography. Would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for Michelle Clunie's somewhat over-the-top performance.

4 out of 5 stars Chill Out, Man. It's A Teaser.......2006-10-13

People need to take a chill pill who keep giving this movie and others like it a bad rating. This movie and others like it are what they are and that's TEASERS. If you want hardcore you know where to go, stop giving softcore such bad ratings. If you love to watch sexy women doing anything from great to silly things, or you just love to watch women, these softcores are it. If you want hardcore go to the video store, sattlelite or cable providers. Teasers are great. So just sit back, relax, chill out and enjoy watching women doing... stuff... great or silly.

1 out of 5 stars It's amazingly silly!.......2006-01-15

Sometimes so called "video productions" of this type is so bad, that it's even interesting and funny. Not this one! The cheapest, silliest, stupidest thing I ever saw. Good packaging, though! I am sure it sales. Don't bother - just throw your money in the garbage - same effect.

2 out of 5 stars mildly funny, but not much erotic.......2005-07-11

This film is mildly enjoyable as a spoof of Lord of the Rings, but as an erotic film it's incredibly tame. I was surprised how little nudity is in it since it's played up as being such a sexy film. Since that's got to be the reason a lot of people watch it, why in the world did the producers not have some of the sexy babes who are in it romp around topless or totally in the buff through most of the film??? If you buy it to see such titillation, you'll find yourself mostly waiting for a few brief flashes every now and then. I think the overall low production values, such as the poor acting, also work against it being much erotic. So if you're getting this to watch in a mixed group or as a LOTR spoof it's OK, but forget about getting it for any kind of erotic turn-on.

4 out of 5 stars Hits the G-Spot!.......2005-04-15

Obviously, "Lord of the G-Strings" is an enjoyable spoof on "Lord of The Rings", and a pretty well-done one at that, considering the usual in this genre. The actresses are gorgeous, the film is essentially surrounded in beauty, though the dialogue is predictably weak, as is the acting, but it is all in good fun, after all. "Schmirnoff" The Wizard is a likable goofball, the Orcs here called "Dorcs" are a bumbling lot, "Dildo Saggins" takes the place of Bilbo Boggins as an enchanting girl who possesses the omnipotent G-String which must be destroyed lest it be captured by "Sourasse", who's primary weaponry consists of his deadly sulphurus emanations, battles Schmirnoff in the end. Accompanying Dildo throughout "Diddle Earth" are two lovely "Throbbit" companions who routinely pleasure each other in a lesbian lust-fest at every opportunity, although the most remarkable scenes have to be the orgy beside the camp-fire {which lasts a generous amount of time, accompanied with Middle-Eastern music which was a really great touch}, and in the pub with a very randy waitress redhead. The resident Dryad seems to be misplaced, and the two faeries are annoying until they join in the fun.

Towards the conclusion of the film, it unfortunately takes a steep direction with the inclusion of a cell-phone and a really lazy effort at the celebration by all present. The main thrust of this presentation is Lesbianism, with only one man/woman scene, although it is very entertaining nonetheless.

Eye candy all around.

5 out of 5 stars For those Who Thought Lord of The Rings was too Geeky.......2005-02-04

Come on. You got the "one g-string" Who doesn't like hot naked people in a very funny porn parody of LOTR. This is great. Plus you got hottie hot hottie Misty Mundae. She likes to do things. Can't let the erotic-y g-string fall onto the bodies of evildoers can you? This is on every time we get a free weekend of Cinemax of HBO on out sattellite. I think this is the movie that sells people to buy HBO. Fun and sexy.

Description

Retro-Seduction Cinema proudly presents a Double Feature DVD that can barely contain the Double Barreled talents of voluptuous grindhouse cinema legend Uschi Digard. With over 80 cult classic films to her credit including Russ Meyer's Supervixens & Beyond the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens and Nick Philips' Roxanna & Pleasures of a Woman, Sweden-born Uschi Digard was the quintessential buxom beauty whose amazing body and all-natural chest were the very definition of raw sex appeal in the 1960s and 70s. The Buxom Bombshell Collection features Uschi in Nick Philips' 1971 sexploitation classic, Fancy Lady, and Bonus 1970 erotic rauchfest The Dirty Pool.

5 out of 5 stars Lovers of Uschi rejoice!.......2007-05-07

The Buxom Blonde collection is for pure Uschi Digart fans! This early work showcases Uschi's premium body to the fullest The story may be a little slow going but once you set eyes on Uschi you forget about things like plot and character development. Uschi is an American treasure!

5 out of 5 stars A must for Uschi collectors.......2006-09-07

The first film on this DVD, "Fancy Lady" is an Uschi Digart showcase. The only other person I recognize is someone who may be Kathy Hilton. The film is a narration-dubbed no-plotter, but Uschi shows off her stuff very satisfyingly to make up for it. A bit of Uschi's performance was taken from this film and inserted into "Gunblast", so take that film off your list and get this instead. The 2nd feature, "Dirty Pool", was previously released on VHS by Alpha Blue Archives with pretty much the same film quality(but with a brief hardcore insert,non-Uschi,that is missing here). The only other recognizable lady in it is Malta. Lots of jiggly softcore scenes, so dump the ABA VHS and watch this instead. If anything, it'll take up less space on your shelf.
