Mediocre comedy.......2007-03-10

Having seen the movie once I would definitely say that I will never come back to it again. May be I have overgrown this kind of movies. But still it is more for kids than for adults. It is a disaster if you compare it with the top French comedies with Belmondo, Richard, de Funes, etc.

Festive movie........2007-01-12

OK, OK, it's a French movie with subtitles. But it's really very funny. Knight & lackey get wizarded to the present, both meet their descendants. Of course, no one believes they are who they say they are. Medieval customs and morals values confront modern French customs and moral values. Hilarity ensues.

Some of the costumes, armor, etc, are off by about 300 years, but the movie's a lark, so who cares.

Why the difference in translations between VHS and DVD versions?.......2006-04-22

I can't compete with some of the reviews written here since so many of them are worded so much better than anything I might have tried to compile.---
The one thing I will say that bothered me was not the film itself but the difference in the subtitling between the original VHS issue, in French, and the subsequent American released DVD.---I guess having owned the VHS and seen it COUNTLESS times (it's that funny-but wore out now) when the DVD was issued I just about jumped out of my pants! Then came the 1st viewing. Not even 10 mins. into the film I noticed little nuance's with the DVD translation that were different from the VHS.--- This was a little disappointing but only because of my familiarity with the tape.
For example: On VHS, in the one scene, right after the Jean Reno was given the witches potion, he says something to the effect of, "Holy Scrotums! The Castle swelleth like a [...]!"--On the DVD (which I'm sorry, I can't remember as well) he said something far more tamer, which is where it lost, to only a minor degree, some of it humorous pazazz and charm!
I sure wish they had-had the same translators when they did the DVD cause the VHS translation was much funnier. Other than this minor little quibble, "The Visitors" is one of the funniest and most touching films I've ever seen. Jean Reno is the best!! (and an honary nod to Christian C. as the side kick!)

If you have not seen this movie, your life is lacking in laughs. I show it to my students and each year they love it! The roles are very well-played, and it helps if you enjoy Monty Python-type humor.
I've never seen the American version (hate to ruin a good thing). Order this movie!

this is a FANTASTIC movie! i have both versions, the French and American (Just Visiting) both are FUN & INTERESTING! if you prefer foreign films though, stick with "The Visitors". if you don't like to read the subtitles or don't understand French, try "Just Visiting"

I have to admit, this movie really gave me the Creepy-Crawly's! The fine line between reality & fantasy comes across quite well, in this spooky little thriller.
If you like tales about cats, sailing the high seas, ghosts, a bit of romance; and in the end the heroine prevails(good on her!)it's worth a squizz! There's some good special effects too - very entertaining!

The Visitors Imaginery Friends.......2007-02-12

This movie is eerie style, which almost fits an illusionary profile of psychology-thriller. The movie is confusing at the start, and continues to make the watcher feel confused throughout the movie, yet as the scenes come together, it seems more real and plotted well. If you want a movie that peeks curiosity, then this movie will definately peek your mind to want to see what happens...Some compare the movie to "ghost ship," yet I cannot see the comparison entirely at this point.

Not a Horror Film..........2006-05-21

...per se. This should appeal more to fans of drama/suspense.

If you're like me and enjoy indulging in films that watch like paperback novels, then this should do it for you. The DVD cover is a bit misleading-- this is about a strong-willed, stubborn woman who decides to sail around the world with no human contact save via radio.

During the trip, cabin fever sets in and she confronts her past and fears through ghostly visitors which include her parents and some pirates.

This picture provides the viewer with some great drama, interesting characters, and an overall satisfying cinematic experience. If it was meant to be scary, it failed (except for the chick's mom-- she was freaky), but shines as a psychological drama.

Check it out if it sounds like your thing.

Visitors (Richard Franklin, 2003)

This movie is getting no love at IMDB, and I'm not terribly sure why. Perhaps the raters over there are used to more highbrow fare; I watched this the week after watching Ghost Ship, and comparison between the two seems unavoidable. In every way, Visitors comes out on top.

During a round-the-world solo sailing race, Georgia Perry (Pitch Black's Radha Mitchell) runs into a calm patch (we eventually find out she's just a few days from the end of the race at this time, so she's already been at sea for roughly six months with only a cat for company). While stuck in the doldrums, Perry has to fight off a bout of isolation-induced insanity where she hallucinates visitations from important people in her life-- her dead mother (Susannah York), her ailing father (Prisoners of the Sun's Ray Barrett), and various others, while having to worry about running across a pirated tanker, and having her only contact with other humans come from radio contact with her fiancee Luke (Blade: Trinity's Dominic Purcell) and Rob (Christopher Kirby, recently seen in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith), the radioman on a freighter who are coincidentally on the same course.

Radha Mitchell is not only drop-dead gorgeous, but is one of those exceptionally talented and yet underrated actors who never seen to get nearly enough work (while Julia Roberts, at twenty million a flick, is working more than ever). It is her performance that truly carries this picture, though many of the minor cast also turn in reasonable performances (Purcell, especially, is appropriately slimy, and Susannah York delivers the kind of role that explains why she was so in demand in the seventies). The film's climax begs comparison with that of Ghost Ship, and while it's cheesy, in comparison it's wildly understated; the denouement is a tad on the "girl-power!" side, but is still thoroughly fitting.

A fun way to kill ninety minutes, and well worth it for a glimpse of Radha Mitchell's charms. *** ½

UNWELCOME GUESTS.......2005-01-31

Psychobabble is the main ingredient of this "psychological chiller" from down under. Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black)plays a daring young lass who sets out to sail around the world and finds herself out of commission when the wind decides to take a vacation. Meanwhile, after spending so much time alone on the vessel, she's starting to have what could either be hallucinations or visitations from various sources: her mother who committed suicide; her father who dies while she's on the journey; pirates; a pirate she killed who keeps coming back; three ladies who are also dead; and she talks to her cat whom we hear talk back. Director Richard Franklin never focuses on the reality or unreality of these visitors, and one is left digging through immense amounts of Mitchell's guilt over her father's accident which not only paralyzed him but also made him impotent; over her emotionally blackmailing mama who slit her wrists in a convalescent home; her guilt over having an affair with an Indonesian hunk; and of course, the movie's sole purpose seems to be to have Mitchell extricate herself from these guilts. While there are some effectively creepy scenes, VISITORS fails on either being a tense psychothriller or a lukewarm horror thriller. No commitment from the writer or director leaves Mitchell in deep water, despite her competent performance. Susannah York is delightfully campy as the mom; Ray Barrett appropriately paternal as her pop; and Domenic Purcell as her lover and partner, Luke, could use some vitamins to energize his understated performance.
Artsy to the point of irritation, VISITORS doesn't chill, thrill or entertain.

This is one of Jean Reno's best performance to date. Nobody take themselves seriously in this movie. Yes, it's one of those time-travel genre, of a knight who yearns to do go to the past to remedy a minor glitch that prevents him from marrying his betrothed bride and thus, doomship for his family line. Due to forgetfulness of the Merlin, he forgets to add in one crucial ingredient. Instead of going back to the past, the knight and his servant are transported 1,000 years later to the future, where he gets to see his descendants. When he's there, he's endeavouring to find a way to go home. Doesn't that remind you of Back to the Future trilogy? Anyhow, this movie absolutely hillarious with slapstick gags about the medieval people having to get themselves adjusted to the modern way of living, and also those cheeky dialogues which meant more to the French than to those like me that have to depend on the subtitles to understand the movie. Few years later, another version is made of this movie with pretty much the same cast. I shall endeavour to watch that one too to give readers a more constructive understanding of this movie offering. Being a 1993 movie, we don't expect to find much extras or any at all in this instance. Sound quality and digital remastering are not available. Very video-like quality. Commendable watching for a rainy day especially when you don't want to think and simply want to have fun!

I've been looking foward to watch this movie, and I've got the

Very, Very Funny.......2005-12-06

I first watched this with my students when I was a student teacher. Everyone enjoyed it immensely! I would recommend for students older than 16, because the language is, at times, a little iffy. But the story is hilarious, and the characters are wonderful. Nice twist to the story line. Jean Reno and Christian Clavier are always worth watching, no matter what movie they're in.

This is actually a really good movie. It's a made for T.V. movie. I saw it for the first time on Lifetime, which isn't a station I would normally watch. It's a movie based on alien abductions. A mother and daughter are confronted with this. At first, it starts with the daughter's loss of time and memory. Later on in the movie, the mother goes to counceling and finds that she was abducted as well. The plot thickens, but I would really hate to give it away. This would probably be a good movie for anyone interested in aliens. I'd say for the price of the DVD $$$go for it. There aren't any extras on this DVD, but I would assume there would be on the one that will cost you a little more $$$

The Low-Profile Sequel Wasn't Well-Recieved, But You Might Not Care..........2006-02-26

After the surprizingly successful original "The Visitors" (1996), a sequel was made, "Les Couloirs du temps: Les visiteurs 2" (or "The Corridors of Time: The Visitors II" in 1998). With a much bigger budget, the same director, and several of the same actors (including Jean Reno), you would expect it to do great at the box-office -- even if it wasn't as good as the original. But it didn't do well. In fact, "Corridors of Time" didn't even recover one-fourth of its budget in overseas theaters.

The general story begins after the end of the original "Les Visiteurs" (or "The Visitors") and immediately tries to justify the sequel with a time paradox that compleatly ignores much of what our hereos were doing before -- and has them doing it all over again. Godefroy de Montmirail (Jean Reno) doesn't really learn anything from the event depicted in the original, and he ppears to be even dumber, which isn't as charming as the character's previous performance. Actress Valérie Lemercier played the role of Frénégonde de Pouille (aka Béatrice de Montmirail) in the original "Les visiteurs," but since she didn't want to comprimise herself in this sequel to avoid getting stuck in the bourgeoise (or a woman belonging to middle-class) role, another actress was cast in her place for the sequel. Muriel Robin tries to imitate the previous actress way too much, instead of trying to make the role her own.

There is still some fun to be had, though. Jean Reno and Christian Clavier still have a great time doing thier respective roles, and I would be lying if I said this film was devoid of humor. It has some good humorous moments, and a mixture of good and bad visual effects. Of course, this sequel is not in league with the original. Several plot points were rather contrived, and a number of the gags went a bit too far (you'll see what I mean), but overall I had a decent time watching it. There are still lots of laughs, a number of new and different crazy situations, and lots of really good ideas. You really need to see the original first. Even the American remake, "Just Visiting" is better than this sequel -- no lie. Fans will probably still want to see this one, but don't expect it to compare to how much fun you had with the first film (even the editing needs some serious work), and keep in mind that the film is designed for really young teenage boys, so don't expect a well-designed script. You probably won't find a proper Engligh translated DVD, so you'll need to search for the French name on the Internet. You really are better off keeping your current DVD of "The Visitors" and just renting/borrowing the sequel, but since this title isn't widely imported, that might be hard. At least I warned you.

Fun, entertaining SF film, aka Pod People on MST3000.......2005-11-25

This odd little Czech film is much like ET but was made before it! Known as Pod People when it was shown on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K), it's the tale of two aliens that accidentally land on Earth. One of the aliens, Trumpy, is raised by a little boy who loves and cares for his new friend, teaching him kindness and gentle behavior, while the other is mistreated by poachers, thus becoming angry and going on a killing spree. Chaos and mayhem ensue before the whole mixup gets sorted out and the little boy is forced to abandon his friend to protect him from other people. All this after a rather large body count is racked up by Trumpy's mistreated and angry twin. The whole pop-group-on-weekend-camping-trip-gone-bad sub-plot is amusing and generated terrific comedy when this movie was used on MST3K. That version of the film is available in The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 2, also for sale here on Amazon. This film is not a particularly good or bad film, it's about average, but it is amusing and entertaining and it has a few ideas in it that were good enough to show up in ET: The Extraterrestrial!
