A frenzied, screwball comedy with a lighter-than-light touch, Nurse Betty is a radical departure for director Neil LaBute, who helmed the vitriolic In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors. Betty (Renée Zellweger) is a perky Kansas waitress whose sole happiness comes from her obsession with the television soap A Reason to Love, starring dreamboat doctor David Ravell (Greg Kinnear). When her slimy car-dealer husband (Aaron Eckhart) enters into a drug transaction that goes horribly awry, Betty inadvertently witnesses the carnage and, in shock, becomes Nurse Betty, determined to reunite with her long-lost love, Dr. Ravell. Tailed by two hit men (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock), Betty heads to L.A. a determined woman, unaware she has their huge drug stash in tow. Though it takes a good half-hour to get going, once LaBute and the movie hit top speed, it's a surreal, often brilliant ride, as Betty's fantasy and reality collide, with unexpected (really unexpected) developments. The screenplay (by John C. Richards and James Flamberg) is wickedly inventive, and like his previous films, LaBute has assembled a peerless cast. Zellweger is charming and daffy in her best performance since Jerry Maguire, and Freeman is by turns menacing and touchingly romantic in his obsession with Betty. Kinnear is the epitome of self-serving shallowness (and makes us love him all the more for it), and Rock finally shakes his standup persona and emerges as a great comic actor. Look also for a scene-stealing Allison Janney as the producer of Kinnear's soap. Most movies rarely get such talent operating at full capacity, and Nurse Betty soars because of it. --Mark Englehart

Now you can achieve multiple viewings of the best Sex on TV. Winner of Golden Globes for Best TV Series and Best Actress, Sex and the City is based on Candace Bushnell's provocative bestselling book. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Carrie Bradshaw, a self-described "sexual anthropologist," who writes "Sex and the City," a newspaper column that chronicles the state of sexual affairs of Manhattanites in this "age of un-innocence." Her "posse," including nice girl Charlotte (Kristin Davis), hard-edged Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and party girl Samantha (Kim Cattrall)--not to mention her own tumultuous love life--gives Carrie plenty of column fodder. Over the course of the first season's 12 episodes, the most prominent dramatic arc concerns Carrie, who goes from turning the tables on "toxic bachelors" by having "sex like a man" to wanting to join the ranks of "the monogamists" with the elusive Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Meanwhile, Miranda, Cynthia, and Samantha have their own dating woes, few of which can be described on a family Web site. Seinfeld has nothing on Sex and the City when it comes to shallow, self-absorbed characters or coining catch phrases. Episode 2, for example, introduces the term "modelizer": a guy who is obsessed with and will only date models. Some may accuse this series of male bashing. But women, after years of enduring shows with "men behaving badly," will relish the equal time. Some may blanch at the ladies' graphic language and ribald humor, or dismiss some of the situations as unrealistic (Carrie doesn't bat an eye when she discovers that an artist friend surreptitiously videotapes his sexual conquests). Still others will view Sex and the City as documentary. Regardless of your view, this groundbreaking series will have you longing for more. --Donald Liebenson
Customer Reviews:
Oh great irony!!!.......2007-05-31
After making me watch Sex and the City with her, my wife astutely observed that at the heart of this show is a great irony. Touted as a "breakout show" lauding feminism and female empowerment, Sex and the City ironically only managed to portray women as more shallow, superficial, petty and empty-headed than virtually any other television show in history (thank creator Darren Star). Far from challenging whatever backward notions might remain that women are not men's equals, all watching this show would actually do is effectively confirm everything about women that misogynistic chauvinists unfoundedly believe, especially but not limited to the beliefs that women are silly, adolescent, juvenile and totally unencumbered by any burdens of logic, adulthood or maturity. Great progress.
Tiring quickly of Carrie Bradshaw's infantile and meaningless ponderings--"Is New York all about change?" "Are new myths required for singles?" "Is life in Manhattan like a bagel with cream cheese?" Here's one: "Is life really all about perpetually asking meaninglessly vacuous questions and then posing witty but ultimately arbitrary responses?"--one is left to wonder what exactly happened to her in childhood that so effectively stunted her emotional development, seemingly forever cementing her personality at about a sixteen/seventeen-year old emotional age. Are we supposed to pity her that "Big" treats her like a little kid, regardless of the fact that she disturbingly acts like an unbalanced little child? I would say no, especially in light of the fact that in real life "Big" and Carrie would probably not be together in the first place.
Another of the show's many absurdities is the foursome of friends that comprise its main characters. Let's face it folks, unless these girls grew up together (and in the show they didn't), these four women would NOT be friends in real life. They would hate each other.

Romantic, witty, and irresistible TV candy.......2007-04-18
In 1998, just as the so-called "king" of all sitcoms was ending, Darren Star (creator of "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills, 90210") created his own - "Sex and the City," very loosely based upon the book by reknowned columnist and socialite Candance Bushnell. The series revolved around the misadventures of Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and her group of self-obsessed girlfriends: successful lawyer Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), whose seemingly constant single status has led many to believe she's homosexual; naive Charlotte (Kristin Davis), whose life revolves around marriage; and Samantha (Kim Cattrall), who may have slept with every man in New York - on numerous occasions. Together, these young, beautiful, and talented women struggle through the late-90s (and eventually early millennium) dating scene, wondering why they're single, what makes men tick, and just looking for love in the Big Apple.
The first season, which aired in 1998, includes 12 delightful episodes. Within the first few enough personality types have been mentioned (such as "Modelizers," those who are addicted to sleeping with models) and enough ridiculous events have occurred to make the series potentially as memorable and quotable as "Seinfeld." The largest story of the first season revolves around Carrie's uncertain relationship with the mysterious Mr. Big ("Law & Order"'s Chris Noth). Carrie knows she loves him, deeply and truly, but does he love her?
"Sex and the City" is one of those series that makes you thank your lucky stars for HBO. The freedom that comes with running a show on HBO is incredible. There is uncensored and restrainless nudity and foul language (which may put off the more timid viewer), an essential part of the show. I imagine that without this, the show wouldn't have been anywhere near as popular or even as good, and on any normal station would probably have flopped. (To see what I mean, watch the HBO version of one episode, and then watch that same episode during the edited TBS re-runs.)
Not that the show's all about getting naked and cursing. There's much more here, particularly a stellar cast. Parker is a heroine for the 90s, and the other girls are normal enough for us to sympathize, but also more than funny enough to keep us entertained. Noth is unquestionably the male highlight, a tall, dark, and devilishly handsome man whose mysterious nature just adds to his charm. The cast is supported by writing that's thoughtful, witty, and creative. Unlike Meredith Grey's episodic musings on "Grey's Anatomy," Carrie Bradshaw's are truly meaningful, and I'm sure legions of women can identify with the problems faced by Carrie and her gang.
All in all, the first season of "Sex and the City," though short (each episode runs a mere 23 minutes on average), is a blast. The characters are down-to-earth and very human, the cast is brilliant, and if the show's attitude toward men is a little chauvinistic, the exemplary writing more than makes up for it. It's romantic, it's fun, it's clever - "Sex and the City" is an irresistible piece of TV candy that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to try a new flavor.
NOTE: If you are at all familiar with the show, or even have a hunch that you'll like it, I'd recommend you shell out the money to purchase the complete series set, a gorgeous package and a MAJOR improvement over the pitiful single-season releases.
Good deal.......2007-04-06
Best bargain out there. Plus, almost every woman loves SATC so it'll be a sure hit if you're clueless as to what to get for that special someone.

sex and the city season 1. Fantastic. The stories are still good. I don't like the format/setup of the first season, or first few episodes, but it gets better from there. Love the show.

From its first gliding aerial shot of a generic suburban street, American Beauty moves with a mesmerizing confidence and acuity epitomized by Kevin Spacey's calm narration. Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried Everyman whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story, and his very first lines hook us with their teasing fatalism--like Sunset Boulevard's Joe Gillis, Burnham tells us his story from beyond the grave.
It's an audacious start for a film that justifies that audacity. Weaving social satire, domestic tragedy, and whodunit into a single package, Alan Ball's first theatrical script dares to blur generic lines and keep us off balance, winking seamlessly from dark, scabrous comedy to deeply moving drama. The Burnham family joins the cinematic short list of great dysfunctional American families, as Lester is pitted against his manic, materialistic realtor wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening, making the most of a mostly unsympathetic role) and his sullen, contemptuous teenaged daughter, Jane (Thora Birch, utterly convincing in her edgy balance of self-absorption and wistful longing). Into their lives come two catalytic outsiders. A young cheerleader (Mena Suvari) jolts Lester into a sexual epiphany that blooms into a second adolescence. And an eerily calm young neighbor (Wes Bentley) transforms both Lester and Jane with his canny influence.
Credit another big-screen newcomer, English theatrical director Sam Mendes, with expertly juggling these potentially disjunctive elements into a superb ensemble piece that achieves a stylized pace without lapsing into transparent self-indulgence. Mendes has shrewdly insured his success with a solid crew of stage veterans, yet he's also made an inspired discovery in Bentley, whose Ricky Fitts becomes a fulcrum for both plot and theme. Cinematographer Conrad Hall's sumptuous visual design further elevates the film, infusing the beige interiors of the Burnhams' lives with vivid bursts of deep crimson, the color of roses--and of blood. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2007-06-22
American Beauty is the greatest movie ever made.
If you haven't already, watch American Beauty by yourself and give yourself some time afterwards to think it over. You will never, ever look at life the same way. It does exactly what movies are meant to do - give us a window into ourselves, and American Beauty does that better than any other film has ever done. No word of dialogue is unnecessary, no character exaggerated, everything is perfect...but if you have seen American Beauty you should know that already. Once you look closer at this movie, and see Beauty in every frame, it becomes so much easier to look closer and see Beauty in everything around you. You think I'm waxing poetic? Then you must not have seen the movie. Every character is a part of each of us: the Lester Burnham of change, the Carolyn of uncertainty and failure, the rebellion of Jane, the defeated Barbara, the false control of Angela and the Colonel, and the real control of Ricky. To me Ricky, not Lester, is the center of this story; he somehow controls or sets in motion the heart of Lester's rebirth and downfall. There are several parts of this movie where I lose control every time I see it, and none more so than the paper bag scene. To me that scene is simply the greatest monologue ever written.
I listened to the message of American Beauty - look closely and you can find Beauty in anything - and it changed my life. I rose out of a long, deep depression and started out into the world. Sometimes there is so much Beauty in the world, I can't even stand it, and it feels like my heart is going to burst.
This is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.
This is BY FAR the best movie that I have had the chance to lay my eyes on!.......2007-06-15
Let's get this out of the way: Annette Bening (Carolyn) totally steals the show. She shows so many different sides to a human being, especially the extreme. She's super peppy and I almost loved to hate her in the movie. Kevin Spacey was pretty good. He plays a depressed man named Lester who's highlight of the day is pleasuring himself in the shower in the morning. In many ways I could relate to this character. Actually, most of the characters are relate able. Lester and Carolyn have a daughter by the name of Jane. She's pretty mean to her parents and wishes they would just disappear. I liked her character, but Mena Suvari's character was even better. I like the scene where some girl says "You're no goddamn Christie Turlington." Her response to that was very funny.
The ending was quite exciting with many things going on so I was definitely sad when it was over...I'm glad they never made a part II to it too because they probably would have tainted the name.
I left a lot out but I'll just say that if you haven't seen the movie, you really need to. Rent it, buy it, borrow it from a friend; whatever. Just get your grubby paws on it. It shows how beautifully messed up life can be. Bittersweet really. :)
Heavy Irony on Amazon.......2007-06-06
I'm always surprised by how many people do not appreciate this movie. The reasons people give for not liking it ARE OFTEN INCREDIBLY IRONIC.....think about it.
The movie says that morals (and pretty much everything else in life) are relative and subject to being perceived in every possible way...
Hell, Shakespeare said "there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." -Hamlet
Society is often so focused on nonsense that we all accept it without really stopping to think.
People read beauty magazines so they think people will love them more, and in turn people loving them will make them love themselves (Caroline). Many women have ingrained themselves so strongly in this that eating disorders have become a rampant problem in the U.S. With television shows like "The Swan," "American Idol," and who knows what else...it's no wonder this is the case.
Who says that smoking marijuana is "bad?" Who says that being fat is "bad?" Who says that being a homosexual is "bad?" Who says that never being afraid of anything is "bad?" In fact, why are we all so afraid of everything?? WHO is telling us to always be afraid? I think this is a very very important question in today's society.
Who says that a bag floating in the wind (litter) is necessarily "bad?" To really be content in life you have to perceive "reality" the way you want to. Not the way people (and the media) tell you to.
The fact that Lester Burnham chose to work at a fast-food restaurant, smoke pot, and lust after an underage girl (was she under 18?) is irrelevant.
He could have done anything other than what he was doing. He could have chosen to get up and follow his dream of starting a business, take over the world, become a monk in the mountains...IT DOESN'T MATTER. Was what he really did that "bad?" That's what made him content because that is the role HE WANTED to play in this world, but never had the guts to actually play out for himself.
If you've seen Fight Club the concept is pretty much the same (also came out in 1999, coincidence?) I like Fight Club, but this movie is much better. I believe Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) makes a statement like, "People do it everyday. They look into the mirror and see the person they'd like to be, but don't have the guts to run with it like you did."
The point is that THIS is what LESTER wanted to do. NOT Caroline, not his boss, and most importantly NOT SOCIETY.
Of course there are limits to this. Hurting people is never a good route. I doubt the movie was advocating people with the dream of being a serial killer to become a serial killer...Though of course Shakespeare's quote also applies here. Think about it...
The movie is saying that people need to stop being robotic automatons and become the person that they want to be, not what everyone else "thinks" they should be.
THINK. It's the greatest gift you'll ever have.
not my genre.......2007-05-24
I really liked "existentialist" lit and those Russian literary genres (pathetic character dramedy) when I was a teenager but can no longer stomache them. I never cared for the work of Kaiser Soeze. I find mid-life crisises to be a boring subject. Many of the details are absurd and hard to swallow. I'm not a fan of fractured plots esp. plots that start with the ending - what could be more played out? starting with the main characters death is not new or clever (like in "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas"from the 1800s -or a more direct cinamatic comparison "Sunset Boulevard" with the main characters voice over and sympathetic conclusion to the love triangle before the big finale).
But I do appreciate that amalgam of literary, theatrical and clean cinematic/TV writing styles that went into the story. And I liked the look of the film. I'm sure it deserves all it's praise.
Not an "American" issue..........2007-05-05
I enjoyed all the feedback and interesting comments and points of view about the "issues" this movie conveys. But a sad truth that we all seem to miss is that the United States is a huge country with people from many different races and cultures all mixed and blended together. Add to this mix a society and culture that thrives on materialism and self-centeredness and you have what American Beauty attempts to communicate and raise our awareness about.
Needless to say, this movie does not portray an "American" issue, it effectively raises our awareness that IT IS a world issue because of the fact that most nations around the world make up what we like to call our "American Society and Culture." I DO agree with Mrs. Walker when she stated, "...it's a sad day when a movie likes this says something this important about who we are as a culture. A sad day indeed..." People like to say that this movie displays an "American" issue and it thrashes its culture, but it is a sad world out there where all nations and cultures have been "sedated" with its own desires for personal gain and power. BUT, thank the Lord that there is still "good" out there, around the whole globe...but we are just too "blind" to see this subtle beauty that surrounds us daily...

Much will be made of Julia Roberts's wardrobe in Erin Brockovich--a brash parade of daring hemlines and Wonderbra confidence. Roberts is unabashedly sexy in the title role of this fact-based comedy-drama, but she and director Steven Soderbergh are far too intelligent to rely solely on high heels and cleavage. Susannah Grant's brassy screenplay fuels this winning combination of star, director, and material, firing on all pistons with maximum efficiency. With Ed Lachman, his noted cinematographer from The Limey, Soderbergh tackles this A-list project with the fervor of an independent, combining a no-frills look with kinetic panache and the same brisk editorial style he used in the justly celebrated Out of Sight.
Broke and desperate, the twice-divorced single mom Erin bosses her way into a clerical job with attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who's indebted to Erin after failing to win her traffic-injury case. Erin is soon focused on suspicious connections between a mighty power company, its abuse of toxic chromium, and the poisoned water supply of Hinkley, California, where locals have suffered a legacy of death and disease. Matching the dramatic potency of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich filters cold facts through warm humanity, especially in Erin's rapport with dying victims and her relationship with George (superbly played by Aaron Eckhart), a Harley-riding neighbor who offers more devotion than Erin's ever known. Surely some of these details have been embellished for dramatic effect, but the factual basis of Erin Brockovich adds a boost of satisfaction, proving that greed, neglect, and corporate arrogance are no match against a passionate crusader. (Trivia note: The real Erin Brockovich appears briefly as a diner waitress.) --Jeff Shannon
Description
A real woman. A real story. A real triumph. Julia Roberts stars as Erin Brockovich, a feisty young mother who fought for justice any way she knew how. Desperate for a job to support herself and her three children, she convinces attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) to hire her, and promptly stumbles upon a monumental law case against a giant corporation. Now, Erin's determined to take on this powerful adversary even though no law firm has dared to do it before. And while Ed doesn't want anything to do with the case, Erin won't take "no" for an answer. So the two begin an incredible and sometimes hilarious fight that will bring a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees.

This movie is worth seeing for a lot of reasons, and for Julia fans, it's a movie that definitely isn't Julia playing Julia, as she has so many times. I have a feeling she had to stretch to portray the brassy, pushy, rude Erin, and she did so brilliantly.
Erin is one of those ladies you love to hate, until you see the goodness and intelligence that may not be the first thing that most people notice about her. And she's a bulldog. Once she gets moving in one direction, there's no stopping her which is a good thing, at least in the true story that this movie portrayed.
This is a funny, heartwarming, and eye-opening movie that's really worth seeing.
True story of David and Goliath in modern terms.......2007-04-20
PG&E, Pacific Gas And Electric company, unintentionally polluted ground water for the town of Hinkley, CA, but tried to cover it up rather than admitting they had caused a major health problem to the residents. This cover up went on for a long time, until a barely-employable spitfire named Erin Brockovich, working for the lawyer Ed Masry, uncovers a strange file of real estate documents which include medical records. Curious as to why a real estate file would contain medical documents, she begins to research the case.
What follows is the true story of a woman named Erin Brockovich, who together with Ed Masry uncovered a major cover up of a health hazard resulting in one of the largest settlements in history. This film is extremely well done, dividing its time between Erin the worker, Erin the single-mom trying her best to raise her three kids, and Erin the human being. The movie skates over the fact that the real Erin got sick along with the rest of the town (although you can see some cut scenes of her illness in the "deleted scenes" feature).
The movie is definitely a dramatized reproduction of the true story, though it still manages to hold very close to the truth. A&E has done a special on the Erin Brockovich case which proves the movie stays true to form. Julia Roberts as Erin and Albert Finney as Ed Masry both give excellent performances. The movie isn't necessarily fast-paced but the dialogue is intriguing, intense at times, and funny at times, keeping the entertainment level high. The acting and dialogue alone are enough to carry this film.
If you're a fan of the little guy taking on the giant, or a fan of Julia Roberts, either way you won't be disappointed. Like Grisham's fictional 'The Rainmaker', you'll feel satisfied that sometimes the little guy can win ... in real life. I recommend a 'buy'. Enjoy!
LM McMillin.......2007-03-18
It was and excellent movie and the interviews with the real Erin Brockovich and Ed Masry made the movie even better.
Erin Brockovich is an Inspiration!.......2007-02-07
Great movie! Nicely told with great acting! I love the fact that Ms. Brockovich made this case happen! She was the underdog here when no one wanted to employ her because she didn't have the right look or the job experience. But Brockovich made things work to her advantage. The same can be said of the case in this movie which Brockovich helped her employers research and win!
Great movie!.......2007-01-26

Starting around Halloween 4, that masked nut Michael Myers stopped chasing his sister (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first and second films, as well as Halloween H20) and went after his niece. Now he's chasing her around again in part 5, but it's a lot of other people who die in the process. Donald Pleasence continues his mad-doctor bit from the earlier movies, Danielle Harris is the unfortunate relation, and Donald L. Shanks plays the monster. The film is an improvement on parts 2 and 4 (part 3 having nothing to do with Michael Myers), but it still amounts to routine slaughter with none of John Carpenter's stylistic brilliance from the original movie. --Tom Keogh

Don't Diss Donald.......2007-06-26
Donald Pleasence is hard core kids. Don't forget it. I esspecially like his performance in this film. An aggravated, gun carying, psychiatrist really looking forward to november 1st. This is a good movie that wraps up the fourth film and gives us a taste of the thorn storyline to come.
Nicley Done!.......2007-06-18
This movie is basicaly a follow up to 4 so if you liked 4 get this one. Might be a few minor disapointments but overall a good movie. And one other thing, what the hell is with that goofy mayers mask.(the worst mask of the series)
PLEASE STOP COMING HOME!.......2007-05-29
After a fairly good entry in the series,we come to Halloween 5! This is probably the worst in the series or close to it. There are just too many plot holes and the whole thing feels really contrived(even for this type of film!)I am a little harsh on these sequels, because the first Halloween is a classic. The sequels don't compare to the original and this one is really confusing and boring at times! It still delivers some shock value here and there, but nothing we haven't seen before. The film transfer is very good though and if your a fan of the series.......
"Uncle, Bogeyman, let me see..." Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.......2007-05-13
In 1989, Director Dominique Othenin-Girard unleased the worst entry in the Halloween series to date. Nothing good came out of this entry. What came was horrendous acting, ugly teens, and a music score that is a total embarassment.
Michael apparently didn't die in the explosion at the end of #4, he escaped and traveled down a river instead. A year later, Jamie is a mute (a bad decision because she's the only main character that does a decent job) and Dr. Loomis has been keeping a very close eye on little Jamie Llyod. Racheal is going away for the weekend, but while she's packing, she dies.
More teens with bland faces who are annoying as hell and don't have a personality you will remember 20 minutes after you view the film, Jamie finally talks with about 1/16th of the movie left to go. Donald Pleasence is great as always, but the writing is so increadibly awful that he can only do so much to save this movie, and even the great Pleasence cannot save this movie from being a total disaster. Don Shanks is also the worst actor to ever wear the horrific mask. Praise God he did not return for #6.
The bonus features on this DVD are quite good the audio commentary makes the movie slightly bearable, it's more entertaining than the movie will ever be. Also, the documentary is very good and interesting.
In conclusion, this is the worst horror film sequal I have ever seen in my life. Avoid at all costs! Even Halloween die-hards will have a tough time sitting through this entry. For die-hards only.
The Boogey Never Dies.......2007-03-07
With a very shocking and plot twisting HalloweeN 4 ending. The producer of HalloweeN 4 seeing that the movie was #1 for two weeks at the box office decided to make a sequal to 4. The Revenge Of Micheal Myers sounds good until you notice this is not the same Myers from 4. Note the mask difference as soon as he escapes the mine explosion. With the last Micheal Myers being small in stature (using hockey equipment to look buff up). They hired a actor who not only taller but is a stunt man. The mask is too long. Most of all why on earth would you kill off Rachel so easily? I mean how many people who are smart in horror films ending up getting killed? Her death was too early in the film to begin with. Once again Danielle Harris does a great job renewing her role as Jamie. Her acting is well scripted with the "luandry chute* scene she did it herself. Shows how devoted she was to her role. When HalloweeN 9 or 1 comes later this year once again Danielle will be in HalloweeN. The mysterious guy in boots was never answered until it was confirmed the actor who played who also did Myers in this film had no idea why. Overall the movie was good to watch until they killed Rachel and the finale with a echoing Harries yelling "no" with a disappointing HalloweeN 6 to followed. Evil never dies is what I see from Micheal Myers no matter what people do he will be back in one way or another.

Something is awry at Boston General Hospital. Dr. Wheeler's (Genevieve Bujold) friend Nancy goes in for a routine procedure, but never comes out of the anesthesia and slips into a coma. Wheeler learns that a tissue sample from the young woman went to the lab, then soon finds out that a high number of patients have become comatose recently. She digs a little deeper and finds a conspiracy mired in hospital politics, running afoul of the head of anesthesia, Dr. George (Rip Torn) and the head of surgery, Dr. Harris (Richard Widmark). Nobody believes the young MD, not even her boyfriend Dr. Bellows (Michael Douglas), but she soon uncovers a black-market trade in body parts, conducted offsite at the Jefferson Institute, a state-of-the-art coma-care facility. As a thriller, Coma certainly has its moments (the scene where a hit man is buried under a pile of frozen-stiff cadavers is an inspired touch), but it's not without its problems. Director Michael Crichton is an MD himself, and the film has a seamless, almost mechanical structure and plotline (taken from the Robin Cook novel). However, the movie's cold, detached feel works against it at times, making the suspense scenes oddly more effective but rendering the emotional content of the characters rather flat. Douglas in particular seems to not put much into his performance; Bujold, on the other hand, is strong and resourceful as the movie's protagonist. More telling, perhaps, is the way that the story shows its age in a time when medical ethics have changed and the phrase "organ harvesting" has made its way into our lexicon. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
Before he created "ER" Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Twister) adapted and directed (his debut behind the camera) this chiller from Robin Cook's best-seller about a sinister medical conspiracy. Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas and Richard Widmark star as doctors caught in its web.
Customer Reviews:
a great medical drama.......2007-03-17
Although this film is almost 30 years old, it is still a hot topic today. If you enjoy medical dramas with sociatal meaning, you'll enjoy this film. The ending will leave you chearing (and thinking)!
Suspended In Suspense.......2006-07-26
It was good to see some familiar actors and actress give us excellent performances in what is normally called a horror movie or thriller. The twist at the end will cause most people to remember the movie for a long time.
If the Caregivers do Harm?.......2006-03-28
The beginning show a hospital operating room. The patient is a good friend of Dr. Susan Wheeler, and undergoes a routine operation. There is a momentary problem. When the operation is over her pupils are fixed and dilated; she is brain dead, and transferred to the ICU. An anesthetic reaction? Why was this patient tissue-typed? The central computer ordered a random test. Dr. Susan visits the computer room to investigate all occurrences of coma in the past year. Some of the deaths were unexpected: patients were young and healthy. But Dr. Susan has violated protocol. This invasion of privacy is smoothed over. Next, there is another unexpected case of coma. The hospital doesn't like Dr. Susan's interest in this. Coma patients are usually transferred to the Jefferson Institute.
Dr. Susan learns how a patient can be killed in an OR: administering CO instead of O2. There are traces which might be overlooked in an autopsy. But Dr. Susan's car won't start, and a stranger seems to be following her. She and Dr. Mark take a weekend vacation. On the way back they visit the Jefferson Institute to look around. Upon her return to the hospital, a janitor tries to tell Dr. Susan something. But the janitor is electrocuted by a killer who makes it look like an accident! Later Dr. Susan finds a tank with a hose leading somewhere. There is a remotely controlled device that connects to OR8, where the coma cases originate. But now the stranger stalks Dr. Susan in the lonely halls of the hospital. There is an exciting chase that ends in the morgue. [The idea of a person discovering a hidden crime then being pursued is common to many adventure films.]
Dr. Susan takes the tour of the Jefferson Institute, and stays behind to explore. She hears that the body parts from the coma victims are harvested and sold to the highest bidder from around the world! Dr. Susan is discovered, but outwits and escapes her pursuers. But she gets a surprise when she reports to the Hospital Administrator! Something happens, and Dr. Susan is scheduled for OR8. Dr. Mark finds and disables the device, saving Dr. Susan's life. This happy ending leaves the consequences implied.
This film has held up well over the decades. Details of hospital care have changed since that time, there is more fear of incurable diseases. The recent scandal in harvesting body parts has made this "science fiction" a case "ripped from the headlines". Science marches on, however implausible it appeared three decades ago. Some of the minor characters have become more famous in films.
Timeless classic.......2005-09-02
A great movie from start to finish. Young Genevieve Bujold and Michael Douglas give outstanding performances. Everyone in the movie is great. An excellent "conspiracy theory" come true movie. A good add for your DVD library.
Scary stuff from the 70's.......2005-06-30
This is a good flick that hasn't lost it's appeal. Michael Crichton's direction is good, I thought, not heavy at least by our standards now. Someone is killing patients at famed Boston Memorial Hospital and getting away with it until Genvieve Bujold loses a friend. She suspects murder but she doesn't know how or why.
Rip Torn is the anesthesiologist and the head of the department and mounts a formidable, sexist and spooky opposition. Richard Widmark plays the head of the hospital. I always liked Widmark, kind of a maverick, always accountable for a solid effort.
The closing scenes in the "Jefferson" site, you'll know what I mean when you see it, are so startling as to make you gulp. Bujold's escape scenes at the end are classic.
We are introduced to Bujold when she's taking a shower and all I could think of was 'thank God we didn't have to sit through her boyfriend Michael Douglas taking a shower.' Didn't we see enough of him . . . no too much of him in "Basic Instinct" a few years later? There's a nice cameo by Ed Harris, very early in his career, who looks so young you think he's 14.
Good movie. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury

Living in exile in Paris after eluding a controversial charge of statutory rape in America, director Roman Polanski seemed professionally adrift during the 1980s, making only one film (the ill-fated Pirates) between 1979 and 1988. Then Polanski found inspiration--and a major star in Harrison Ford--to make Frantic, a thriller that played directly into Polanski's gift for creating an atmosphere of mystery, dread, escalating suspense, and uncertain fate. Set in Paris (Polanski couldn't go to Hollywood, so Hollywood came to him), the story begins when an American heart surgeon (Ford) arrives in the City of Lights with his wife (Betty Buckley) for a medical convention. They check into a posh hotel, and in a brilliantly directed scene, Ford takes a shower and emerges to find that his wife has vanished. This mysterious disappearance--and a confusion between two identical pieces of luggage--leads Ford into the Paris underground and a plot that grows increasingly dangerous as he approaches the truth of his wife's disappearance. The plot gets too complicated, and the pace drops off in the cluttered second half, but in Polanski's capable hands the film is blessed with moments of heightened suspense in the tradition of classic thrillers. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Performances, OK Movie.......2006-10-13
Roman Polanski's 1987 film "Frantic" was another Harrison Ford as the hero film and introduced Polanski fans to the beautiful foreign actress Emanuelle Seigner (who would later become Polanski's wife). Looking at the back cover, a reviewer proclaims "Heart-stopping. Polanski's Best Film Ever. Ford is the Ultimate Hero." The film wasn't heart-stopping, this is not Polanski's best film (Chinatown anybody?), and Ford is a pretty good action hero but not the best. Having just, pretty much, bashed the film. I did like it. It has it's moments, Ford and Seigner are great; The movie isn't as elaborate as it tries to be, but it's entertaining for the most part. Ford plays Richard Walker, an American doctor in Paris with his wife Sondra (Betty Buckley) to give a speech. Walker is also planning a little quality-time with his wife. While Walker takes a shower, his wife yells something to him which he doesn't hear, and when he gets out of the shower she's gone. After asking questions, it seems that she's ran off with a man...So when Walker files a missing persons report, the police don't really take him seriously. When he learns from a drunk that his wife has been kidnapped, Walker begins doing whatever he can to find her. Then he finds Michelle (Seigner), a French-woman who is in the habit of smuggling drugs across borders for people.
Michelle's suitcase got mixed up with Walker's wife, for the record. Anyway, Michelle seems to know a lot more than she lets on and she begins helping Walker find his wife. The conclusion is less-than-satisfying. Polanski is really good at two things when he makes films. Cinematography and suspense. The cinematography is in top form in the film, there's some great shots of Paris and some great shots in general. The suspense, however, is almost nonexistent. There isn't any really heart-stopping things that happen in this film. Ford does his best with the material and the movie holds your interest, but it's no masterpiece.

Never Assume...Never Presume...Good Courtroom Whodunit.......2006-09-10
"Presumed Innocent"(VHS-PAL edition)
Director Alan J Pakula with his usual flair for suspense("Klute"/"The Pelican Brief"), really draws us in and keeps us guessing in this courtroom thriller. The cast is also wonderful at keeping the mystery alive as they portray their parts perfectly, never giving away anything. It stars Harrison Ford, Brian Dennehy, Raul Julia, Bonnie Bedelia and Greta Scacchi.
Ford is a prosecuting attorney. He's one of the best around, so when a fellow attorney is brutally murdered, he is assigned the case. He is a bit reluctant though. This fellow attorney, was a brilliant lawyer,as well as a beautiful and sexy woman, and one other thing...he was having an extra marital affair with her and when it ended, he became obsessed with winning her back. Uh Oh...all the evidence eventually points right at him! Don't rule ANYBODY out in this edge of your seat courtroom drama.
An above average murder mystery, with a great cast and brilliant director. The music of John Willilams also adds just the right touch of suspense. I hadn't seen this one for quite a while, so I actually forgot whodunit, until almost the end, and I enjoyed it as much the second time around as the first.
Also I must mention the really terrific performances of the supporting cast. Paul Winfield(with his oh so recognizable voice) as the Judge, John Spencer, as the Detective helping Ford with evidence, and Anna Maria Horsford as an assistant in the office.
This is a PAL VHS (ASIN:B00004CNGB) That would be mostly for players compatible in Europe, Australia, China, and parts of the Middle East.Language tracks listed are English and French. Some VHS players may be compatible in all regions.Check your manual, and links to other formats on the product info page for best prices and availability. If purchasing from an outside merchant, you may want to check with them to make sure you are getting the edition you need.
A terrific addition to your suspense collection.
Never assume....Never presume....

Polanski in a slump.......2006-08-28
An American doctor in Paris (Harrison Ford) searches for his wife (Betty Buckley), who has been kidnapped due to a luggage mix-up at the airport. It begins with promise, but the plot never really develops any momentum and culminates with a desultory gunfight that offers no suspense, no revelations, and no excitement. Roman Polanski is a gifted director. He made some brilliant films before this and he would make some great ones later, but "Frantic" feels like its on autopilot.
Edge of your seat suspense!.......2006-03-24
While Roman Polanski was avoiding authories in America in 1988, he managed to put together a superb suspense thriller. It stars Harrison Ford in a rather unique role; that of a doctor, an every man type such as Jimmy Stewart in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" without the Indiana Jones hype. Although filmed 18 years ago, it seems more contemporary that ever. A fine thriller that even Hitch would approve!
What is NOT contemporary is the fact that we consumers here in Region 1 - North America, that's right, Canada too, get nothing but JUNK & GARBAGE from the releasing studios. Lousy, grainy transfers in the edited Pan & Scan format; not fit for anything but a 7" DVD personal viewer, MAYBE! Why is this and most any other post-1953 movie presented in it's original aspect ratio available in Region 2 - Europe but not on this side of the pond? Disney is by far the major offender in this area but hey, what say you Warner Bros.?
It was always thought that the mighty oceans would protect us from our enemies, both foreign and domestic. 9/11 proved that wrong, and I guess nobody though of Hollywood as a band of American Home Video terrorists, a silly statement but ever so true! This Region 1 DVD release of "Frantic" says it all.
Good suspense.......2006-02-16
If you've never seen this movie before, it keeps you on the edge of your seat as the plot thickens step-by-step. Ford's acting here is top-notch as always. I like the cinematography in the scene where he goes through Michelle's suitcase. It focuses on the suitcase and his hands, not his face. At The Blue Parrot, you can see the man he's been reduced to...an respected American doctor reluctantly snorting coke in the men's room at a Parisian nightclub...just to get the answers he's searching for. In the dancing scene at A Touch of Class, he seems close to breakdown as Michelle seems to want to get closer to him physically and emotionally. He clutches her for a moment in what could be construed as human need...a body in his arms. I never tire of this movie...one of my favorites with Ford.

Customer Reviews:
WANT TO SEE A MAN SCALPED ALIVE? WATCH NURSE BETTY.......2007-03-20
THANKS NURSE BETTY AND NEIL LABUTE, (DIRECTOR). I now know what it looks like to see a human being scalped alive with a sock stuck in his mouth, then shot in the back while scuttling across the floor like a beetle bug for his life. I can't tell you how much invaluable insight this has added to my life experience.
Thanks for the nauseating "punched in the stomach" feeling I had in my gut and the two days of reliving the gruesome, grisly scene. The story line could not possibly have survived without the vivid detail and it was so well done, down to the last spatter of blood.
Thanks for the R rating you gave it. If it had been given the X rating that it deserved for graphic violence, I might not have rented it. Thanks for calling it a comedy. Though it might have started out seeming like it was going to be one, if I had known what it really was, I might not have rented it and thus deprived myself of this wonderful piece of filmmaking and storytelling, so full of insight, so uplifting, so cleverly executed. Did I say executed? That you did very well.
BARF!
THIS IS A STRANGE, BUT GREAT MOVIE!.......2007-03-14
At first look you would think that this film is a romantic comedy/drama?? It is very funny at times and has some drama, but it also has one of the most horrific murders ever put on screen! I really liked this film and everyone in it plays there part to perfection. The DVD transfer is good.
"A Reason To Love".......2007-01-27
The soap within the movie, "A Reason To Love", is in its entirety on the dvd: this alone makes it worth it! And it makes the movie make more sense.
Excellent film to start with, but the bonus features make it better!
Just watch it with an open mind: Neil LaBute got great performances outof everyone!
Love Is Blue........2006-10-04
The first time I saw this movie (can't believe it was over six years ago), I wrote that Nurse Betty was delightful -- not the movie, but the character. It's too bad Renee changed too much since her naivete in this silly film within a film. Lots of things have changed in six or seven years -- I know I have, that's for sure. When I found this tape, I was shocked, thinking either I have changed or watching it in a theater added a bit of magic lacking on the tape. Nobody is that un-sophisticated. Perhaps her "unknowing" character was the story (may be every girl's fantasy) takes her on a journey into the world of soap operas. She was too sweet to be true. We don't all get what we wish for; this is a modern fairytale like 'Born Yesterday.'
Here, now, is Wink's "A Reason to Love." He must have found this same tape in April out there when he accused another Betty of creating a soap opera. Chuck is no Greg Kinnear. All Bettys are not so dumb as to travel to California while in a dream state caused by Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. She becomes the character and fascinates Dr. David as she dresses like a nurse and successfully lands a job in a real hospital.
Betty was damaged emotionally by the sight of her real-life, abusive husband after he was savagely murdered. Suddenly, she's free to be herself and spend some time in fairy land out in Los Angeles. They found her charming and relentless, but she is not a Southerner. After a foray into a world she does not understand, she lost her spontenanity and is devastated when her idol proves to be less than a god -- when he calls her crazy or deranged. Later, he changes his mind. Greg Kinnear is as handsome in this role as our George Clooney, only better. She had told him "If you were any handsomer, it'd be a crime; it's too bad you're such an -------."
He inadvertendly sends Del's killers to her before she can safely get away in the car which has their drugs in the trunk. The publicity of the ordeal at which both father and son murderers died gained her dream come true. She and David were together for sixty-three episodes. After that, she is alone in Rome among the pigeons, not recognized by the Italian waiter at the outdoor cafe.
terrific satire.......2006-03-20
This is a brilliant satire on the blurring of the line between TV and reality.
When life has become so dull and tame that millions fixate on TV as an alternate, this is precisely the kind of medicine we need.
Betty is a downtrodden but ever-optimistic waitress whose life shuttles between the humdrum (her job) and the abusive (her husband).
Her only refuge is a medical soap, which seems not only better but more real than her own.
When her husband the abuser himself is abused--right out of the picture--she cracks, and pursues her dream: the soap opera, which she now thinks is real.
Miraculously, she gets her foot in both the real medical world and the soap opera world (she can't tell the two apart).
Eventually, reality catches up, destroying her delusions, but (in the way of all good romance and comedy) allowing her to make her illusions real.
Interestingly, the most hard-bitten and seemingly realistic characters, the hit men, turn out to be the most deluded and fantasy-obsessed.
First-rate satire throughout.

--Tom Keogh
