Keeping secrets is difficult and, sometimes, unhealthy. Emily (Evan Rachel Wood) discovers a talent for keeping secrets early in life and deems the skill marketable enough to open her own neighborhood business. Emily is also an amazing violin player with high aspirations for a musical career. Secret-keeping proves lucrative at first, but eventually the burden weighs on Emily and affects her ability to concentrate, hurting her chances of making the local youth symphony. Resolving her dilemma requires the help of two new friends, her violin teacher, parents, and a fair amount of soul-searching. Eventually, Emily's journey leads to the dissolution of her business and a cathartic revelation of a major secret of her own. The moral of Emily's experiences: "You can't keep secrets about yourself and live a true life," and "if you want to be close to someone, you can't keep secrets from them." Playing House.......2007-06-02
This 1976 Jodie Foster thriller was advertised as a horror film when it came out, but there's hardly any horror at all in it: it's more like a mystery, with the viewer waiting to find out why Foster's 13 year-old character (bizarrely named "Rynn") seems to live all alone in a large Cape Cod rented house, what she doesn't want anyone to see in her cellar, and why her father never seems to be in when neighbors come to visit. And come they do, again and again; even though Rynn is supposed to be a child genius (she studies Hebrew privately, read Emily Dickinson, and becomes the master of all sorts of outlandish skills central to the mystery), she never seems to get it into her head to lock her front door. Among her unwelcome guests include Alexis Smith as the bossy and anti-Semitic grande dame of the nearby town and Martin Sheen (!) as her loathsome son, a child moesltor who takes a fancy to Rynn and who devises a most repugnant (and absurd) way of killing Foster's pet hamster. More welcome is the very likeable Scott Jacoby as a handicapped teenage magician who comes to help Rynn with her quest to be left alone.
Some people remember this movie very fondly, and it's hard to figure out why. Even setting aside such strange period touches -- Rynn's horrible hairdo, the Moroccan caftan she likes to lounge about the house in, and the odd use of Quinn/Martin-styled electronic background scoring,-- the film is impossibly and fatally stagey, with 90% of the film's action taking place in Rynn's living room. Laird Koenig, who adapted the screenplay from his own novel, is not very graceful with dialogue, and the cast, despite their considerable talents, seem to be tripping all over their awkward repetitive accusatory lines. Foster is very appealing, despite this, and the role does make good use of her intelligent oddball qualities.
Creepy, gets under your skin. .......2007-05-12
I never forgot this movie the first time I saw it as a preteen. It was CREEPY in a psychological way. How smart she was for such a young girl. Her calm demeanor, the way she could outwit adults by words, alone.
And to this day, whenever I see almond cookies or almond tea..I think of this movie, lol.
Unforgettable, chilling, a classic. Jody Foster was incredibly mature at that age to pull the character off, like that. THAT'S TALENT!
Jodie Foster Shines in this role.......2006-12-20
I just watched this movie on TCM a few minutes ago, in the early a.m. hours. Like a lot of the other reviewers, I saw this movie many years ago, and never forgot it. When I watched it this morning, I was still astonished with Jodie Foster's acting ability at such a young age.
It may be a long stretch, a thirteen year old living in a huge house in the country, with her poet father who may, or may not be, living with her. But as the story enfolds, we understand why she is not in school. Thirty years after the movie was made, I got rather frustrated about Alexis Smith's role. I mean, the rent was paid for three years, what's the beef? Too much overacting on her part. And Martin Sheen -- well, he was creepiness personified. A known pedophile in a small town! C'mon. Oh well, it is only a movie!
Great performances from everyone. The town is beautiful, filmed in Canada. About the ending -- what is she going to do now?
Thats what little girls are made of (spoiler warning).......2006-12-07
This was an excellent movie. Jodie Foster gives an impressive performance for someone her age (her character was equal parts annoy and clever). Martin Sheen was equally as good as a vile and sadistic pedophile. Basically an all around good cast. The story was so good that it kept me interested despite the plot holes. I agree with other reviewers that the story tried to deliver the right message about independence and not letting others change you into what they want you to be. But lets face it, in real life a 13 year old living on her own is not a wise idea. At the end her character even admits that they thought of everything except for loneliness and the need for human companionship. I also felt that the 13 year old carrying on a sexual relationship, let alone with someone who was obviously older than her was disturbing. It seems as if the movie was presenting some kind of double standard: Martin Sheen is disgusting for going after young Jodie but "Mario" isn't because he's her hero and within 10 years of her age.
Mario.......2006-11-22
This little girl lives by herself, Its wild how she lives, and what out for that white powder! Mario is her only friend.
And trap door is a goner.

"Blue Velvet" for the Middle School Set.......2005-09-08
David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" starts with some great images: ideal suburbia - kids crossing the street, firemen waving as they go down the road on their truck, and a man watering his garden. Then the guy has a stroke and collapses. We are then treated to the best shot of the film: his dog playfully jumping around the squirting hose he continues to hold as a toddler ambles toward him. Then the camera moves down for a macro shot of the insect world in his lawn, introducing the film's theme that there is a secret and much nastier world just below the surface of "Norman Rockwell" suburbia.
In "Little Secrets", Emily runs a business which keeps all the neighborhood secrets in a safe place for a fee. It takes Lynch's dark theme and turns it into a lesson about friendship and trust. Apparently this thematic content is the reason the film was given a PG rating, although it is hard to imagine that anyone would think this film required "parental guidance".
The film features a decent performance from Evan Rachel Wood (Emily), although there is nothing here that would lead anyone to think she was capable of her breakout performance in "Thirteen". Michael Angarano (Phillip) is fantastic opposite Wood and they have a nice chemistry. David Gallagher does a good job in a small role that is unnecessarily tacked onto the story, presumably to capitalize on his "7th Heaven" popularly. Blair Treu, the film's director, should have recognized in mid-production that a better resolution would have been the pairing of Emily and Phillip rather than Emily and David. It was an easy fix, minor rewrites and re-shooting a couple scenes to make Phillip the same age as Emily, they certainly look the same age. Gallagher's drawing power did not save the production commercially (it tanked big time at the box office) so they ruined the ending for nothing.
The director of photography used a lot of great crane shots and creative camera angles but overall the the shots should have been tighter (i.e. closer shots of the faces and eyes). One exception was Caitlin E. J. Meyer (Isabelle) who the camera loves and who steals her scenes as the nine-year old younger sister of Emily's best friend. Isabelle has the movie's best line "Life is complicated when you look like Claudia Schiffer".
This is a very original premise, a well-conceived and rather profound story. It should really appeal to those who liked "The Boy Who Could Fly" and "Harriet The Spy".
There is one especially good scene when the web of secrets starts to crumble. First Emily is angry at David because he was caught drinking which was his secret, making David angry at Phillip for telling Emily his secret, which makes Phillip angry at Emily for telling David that he had told her David's secret. "What a tangled web we weave...."
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Little Secrets? More like silly hollywood film.......2005-04-16
While this film was engaging on many fronts, I could not bring myself to enjoy it. It injected a fantasy world into the minds of our young children, synonomous with an opiate. While I do enjoy children's films, I found it was not up to par with the latest in children's technology (Spy Kids 3-D is a good example of this). The acting was paralled by Keanu Reaves - outright silly! The story was not compelling enough to bring me to the edge of my seat. I could not recommend this film to any family household. If you're looking for a great cinema for your Parker Brother's night, check out Slam Dunk Ernest.
Worth watching over and over.......2005-01-22
I simply LOVED this movie. I enjoyed the acting, the story and the love of classical and orchestra music that was incorporated in the story. I enjoyed the little stories of the small children that were included throughout the movie and appreciated being able to watch a movie that not only could my children watch, but that I would enjoy with them. Don't miss it.
Nainme Spears.......2005-01-22
I watched this film a couple of years back and although it looks like an adult film, its actually more of a kids film, to be content. The movie title explains what its about obviously, so I aint gonna spoil it for people who aint seen it if you know what I mean! I thought iot was alright but it cannot beat kingdom hearts!
Suprisingly good.......2004-07-13
For a person who does not exactly fit into the demographic for this movie nor likes that many kid flicks, I must say I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. The story is well-written and, taking into account the fact that this is a family movie, it is extremely well-acted. It tells the story of Emily and her neighborhood business of secret-keeper and her relization that keeping others' secrets (and hiding your own) is complicated. It also has charming subplots about first love, a new baby and determination, as well as the sorted secrets of all the kids in Emily's neighborhood Anyone who has seen either of the three principal actors in anything else will in my opinion be pleased with the movie and also find themselves feeling good after seeing it.

Fun "B" Spy Movie.......2007-01-04
If you're a fan of early/mid-1960s B-movies and TV shows, you'll get a kick out of this little black and white espionage picture. It's somewhat more reminiscent of an early episode of The Man From UNCLE or Amos Burke, Secret Agent than James Bond. It is particularly recommended for fans of two of the lovliest exotic starlets or the era -- Aliza Gur and Edina Ronay.

Great Family Entertainment !!!!!.......2006-05-10
We have three girls (ages 10, 8, and 7) who loved these films. The 7 year old was inspired to take violin lessons after watching Little Secrets several times. Little Secrets came with a CD of the soundtrack, which was inspiring. These are definitely 'girls' films, but I'm the Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them with the girls. Most families will enjoy them. Highly recommended!

What, No deleted scenes?.......2004-04-09
This movie is a mess. Nothing makes sense. It seems like half the story is missing. While watching it, I kept trying to fill out the gaps in my mind, but eventually I stopped because I was nearly bored to death. If there's not going to be a good story, then you need sex and action. This movie has no action and no sex. It's all a big tease. On the good side, the acting and production values are good, but that's about it.
NOT SO DEADLY SECRETS.......2004-01-02
Fiona McKenzie's "indie" DEADLY LITTLE SECRETS has a lot of potential going for it: Dylan Walsh ("Congo" "True Crimes") is its charming lead; lovely Dina Meyer ("Starship Troopers") looks as beautiful as ever, and even Craig Sheffer ("Night Breed") is in the cast. So what went wrong?
First of all, let's try plausibility: why was Sheffer knocking off the pro athletes? Hints of sexual release aren't sharply defined.
Second: what is with the lesbian romance between Meyer and Michelle Hicks?
Third: Why was Meyer anxious to get the child back if it wasn't hers?
And why did these two girls let the killings go on without informing someone?
And why was Walsh given a mandatory leave---hints of "inappropriate behavior."
It ends up a decent film, with Walsh basically lost in a thankless "hero" role---but if he was a cop, he does some pretty stupid things, e.g., why does he try and lose his FBI backup after locating the fleeing Meyer?
Sheffer doesn't convince in his demented role, looking more like a modern Prince Valiant in the climax. And does he die in the end????
Not an awful movie, but one that missed a lot of potential.
Deadly Fun..........2003-04-26
I was in the mood for unpretentious unpredictability when I picked this one up, and I wasn't disappointed. Lots of twists--but not twists for twists' sake. I love Michele Hicks and Dina Meyer (sp?) is starting to grow on me.
More than anything, I love indies when they bring in a high quality film without the bells and whistles and overkill of the big studios.
This one should go in your suspense library to be seen multiple times!
Extraordinary Film.......2003-03-14
A suprisingly fantastic thriller from an independent film maker! For those who haven't seen it, WATCH IT!
"Secrets" should be shared with friends.......2003-03-06
Deadly Little Secrets' represents everything good about independent film. It is biting, memorable and most of all intelligent. This film has an excellent and compelling story, beautiful artistry and performances by little known actors of which they should all be proud. Craig Sheffer, in particular, after several forgettable earlier performances, seemed to have really hit the mark with this role. I could tell how much he bonded to and loved his character.
The story moves at a comfortable pace, giving the viewer just enough time to take in all the subtlety of the performances and the scenery (of which there is a lot), while never dragging its feet or stumbling. The story also possess the rare quality of being both complicated, as the character maneuver through the various twists and turns of the plot, and very direct, almost simplistic, presentation of the larger issues with which the film grapples.
I was most impacted by the amazing atmosphere that the entire story seems to create. In many films I have seen, the story is presented, and a picture is shown, and most of the time the two are completely unconnected. But with `Deadly Little Secrets' the two are so seamlessly crafted together that I actually lost myself completely in the world that was being presented to me.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a big budget attempt at this same story, or at least the themes it so richly portrayed, come out of Hollywood in the near future.
In the end, if you want big budget eye candy that spits on your mind, go see the next Lucas film. But if you want a film that is actually crafted to be smart and effecting then share `Secrets' with your friends.

One of the best ska music dvds out there!.......2006-04-09
This disc has been a long time in the making and a way over due release as well. Spanning the Toasters entire career, this is a great companion to any ska collection and more so to the vast Toasters collection many of you may already have.
The idea for this dvd was constructed by me (Jeremy) after I had been sent a few old tapes of Toasters live shows from Bucket. A few months before Buck was going to move out of his New Jersey home, I (and Andrew = MD) took a trip to Buck's house to help him remove all the ska stuff from his basement and garage, within this mass historical collection, were large amounts of old video tapes in various formats. Some were live shows, some were semi documentaries sent in by fans, others were official music video tapes and segments from movie and video studios. With the idea of preserving all this footage and getting some decent quality video clips up the official website for the fans, I told Buck we probably had enough footage here to make a pretty decent dvd compilation. So I set off home and started digitizing what I had come across. There is actually a whole other dvd's worth of material that was left off this release (I had original built it as a 2 disc set). Some clips were left of due to uncertainty of who owned the footage to legally sell and distribute it. So what we ended up with is a good mix of official (and not so) music videos, some various interview clips and live footage ranging from the 80's on through the 2000's. Keep in mind some of this footage came from really old video tapes sitting in Buck's basement since they were first shot! Future plans include self releasing some "bootleg" series live dvds straight through the online store...so keep checking back!
