Product Description

Phil is a respected psychotherapist and couples counselor. Eric is a successful attorney. They have lots of friends, tons of money, and host pool parties complete with appropriately flamboyant friends. Phil and Eric are anxiously waiting to adopt a baby. In the interim, their friend, Gloria, a resourceful child service case worker, talks them into taking in two juvenile delinquent brothers who turn out to be foul mouthed, liquor cabinet raiding terrors! Originally, she assures them that "It's just for one night." As one night stretches into many, the "father-son" conflicts escalate. Things become even more complicated when the alcoholic, prostitute, junkie mama arrives on the scene to retrieve her babies--- until she sees the mansion and the open bar! What results is a lively and touching comedy that explores what we think love looks like, and the unlikely places we find family!

"Get Your Stuff"

Problematic Fun

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

The story behind "Get Your Stuff" (Culture Q Connection) is just what one needs to make a movie--a cute premise and good looking cast members, however, do not always make a good movie. "Stuff" starts off just fine. Two gay guys want to be foster parents but instead of getting an infant as they wanted they got two unruly boys. The story begins to sag with the arrival of the boys. Lots of thinks happen but nothing is connected and to try to follow the script is impossible. What could have been a very cute movie was ruined by a sloppy script.
When a successful gay couple receives two foster kids their world turns upside down. Phil (Cameron Watson), a couples counselor and Eric (Anthony Meindl), a lawyer are approved to be foster parents. After coaxing and something close to blackmail, they agree to take in T.J. and Brian, originally for one night. That one night became two and three and four nights and so on
The kids are really good little actors and even manage to out act the adults. T.J. (Grady Hutt) is optimistic and attempts to get his brother to behave so that they can at last have a home. Brain (Blayn Barbosa), however, is not accepting and does not want anything to do with Phil and Eric. Their case worker talks them into behaving so that the couple will keep them.
Problems are dealt with lightly. Everything is played for laughs but the message is strong enough for us to get it. The problems do take their toil on Eric who only wanted a baby, not an entire family and problems. He finally just walks out on the entire situation in one of the worst and most melodramatic scenes I have ever seen in a movie. However, a bad scene like that is not the norm for this film. Most of it is feel good comedy. When Kimberly Scott as Gloria, the social worker, is on the screen everything is just fine. Her portrayal of tough love in the scenes with the kids is wonderful.
The antics of two wealthy gay men in Beverly Hills could be funny but it seems overly dramatic and somewhat condescending. The move has its good parts but it is not a robust comedy. Rather it is a cute little movie--part comedy, part drama. It is enjoyable and should be seen. The ideas were good even if the execution of them was not. In actuality it seemed more like a trial run. Much of the movie was randomized--things did not always fit together. But I will say it is better than a lot of other gay movies I have seen.

3 out of 5 stars Sort of like a weeknight network movie.......2006-06-21

Cute couple of guys, pretty well acted script, interesting enough story that you want to watch the movie. Overall, a nice little flick for a weeknight after work.

3 out of 5 stars enjoyable movie.......2005-12-26

i have seen this movie about 30 times. i watch it almost every day. there is not much of a movie here so i can't explain it. the acting is only average to my way of thinking. it just seems to have an honesty that is very refreshing. the two young boys in this movie seem to be the best actors of the bunch. i cn recommend this movie, not because its so wonderful but because its fun.

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculous, mean-spirited farce.......2005-07-25

Okay, I thought this movie might be funny and thoughtful and unique. This is an interesting premise that isn't terribly overdone or cliche', but it's mostly wasted because the screenplay makes everyone, yes everyone, look like a moron. Our two gay "heroes" only agree to take care of two troubled teens because they are trying to score points with the social worker who places these kids with them (a gay couple) out of desperation. The troubled kids act like troubled kids, and the gay "adults" behave like children.

They are terribly upset, for instance, because they can't have privacy. Yet they are hoping for an infant to adopt? Do they think they will have lots of privacy and quiet nights with an infant in the house?

It doesn't matter because the alcoholic prostitute mother eventually moves in and destroys what little sanity is left in the house until ...everything works out perfectly in the end. Ridiculous.

This film is not the least bit funny or touching, and is actually boring and ridiculous. The acting is sub-par too. So, if you're interested in this premise, rent this before you buy. The highlight of this movie is a scene of the gay couple in Speedos. 'Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliance Possible.......2005-02-14

Interesting Story - although somewhat predictable right from the outset.

Dreadful acting! Every line is strained and self-aware with the two main male characters which is a bit disappointing. However the support cast (the kids and the welfare worker et al) do tend to have moments of brilliance. The comparisson makes you wonder why the support cast is so good when the principals are so poor.

Initally this makes the film a little hardto get into. Eventually I found myself pulled into the story.

Its a nice tale, told many times in many ways.

Would I buy it if i had seen it before? No.
Would I buy it for a gift? No.

Strangely compelling even so!
