5 out of 5 stars My Girl and My Girl 2 are both moving films and to cherish for years to come........2007-06-29

My Girl:

The first movie was from 1991, but it takes place in the early seventies. Anna Chlumsky stars in her first movie and does a darn good job playing Vada Sultenfuss, but of course she has already famous stars acting with her: Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Macaulay Culkin.

The movie starts out with Jamie Lee Curtis (Shelly) who is a cosmetician and wants to be hired by Dan Aykroyd (Vada's father) who is the town's mortician. He ends up hiring the sexy woman while Vada spends her summer with the boy next door who happens to be her best friend, Thomas J. played by Macaulay Culkin.

Upset over the death of her mother, and believes it is her fault, Vada is obsessed with death. And because her father and Shelly start dating and he buys her an engagement ring, Vada runs away from home. But she returns home and starts to get along with Shelly. But once she becomes friends with Shelly, her best friend, Thomas J. gets stung by bees and dies in the woods. Not wanting to believe that his death is real, she talks to him while at the funeral as he lies in his coffin. She runs away again but returns to her adult writing class with a poem. Though she may not be an adult, she took this class because she has a crush on the teacher, but she also enjoys writing. This is the poem that she wrote expressing her feelings for Thomas J. who idolized her when they were friends.

Weeping willow with your tears running down

Why do you always weep and frown?

Is it because he loved you one day?

Is it because he could not stay?

On your branches he would swing

Do you long for the happiness that they would bring?

If you found shelter in your shade

If you thought his laughter would never fade

Weeping willow stop your tears

There is something to calm your fears

If you think that as your two forever part

And I know he'll always be in your heart

My Girl 2:

The second movie was from 1994 but was based in the mid seventies. Many of the characters in the second movie were also in the first movie. But there are two newcomers: Austin O'Brien who plays Nick and his mother Rose played by Christine Ebersol.

Vada is given an assignment in her class at school. The assignment is to write about someone you admire and has achieved something, but who you have never met. Vada decides to write about her mother. Because her mother is from Los Angeles, she wants to go to L.A. to find out more about her. Her nervous father is paranoid to let his 13 year-old daughter on a plane to California by herself, but she ends up going and stays with her uncle and his girlfriend and his girlfriend's son, Nick.

Vada and Nick spend their spring break together hoping to find information on Vada's mother. At first they quarrel and don't have much in common, but they start to get along. Vada makes some surprising discoveries about her mother and she learns more about herself. No longer a child, but not quite an adult, its tough being a young girl in the real world, but somehow she manages to find her way. This is the song that her mother sings in a home movie she watches and the same song she sings to her newborn baby brother.

Smile though your heart is aching

Smile even though it's breaking

Although a tear

Maybe ever so near

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile what's the use of crying

You'll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just smile

Vada ended up getting an A+ on her report and this is what she found out about her mother. "She may not have her footprints in the cement, but she definitely left her imprint on the world. And I told him (her teacher) that even though it sounds conceded, her greatest achievement was me."

Both movies are great to watch over and over again. These movies I would say are for 8-14 year-olds, but I think many people of all ages would enjoy watching them.

4 out of 5 stars Confused About Identity.......2006-09-03

"My Girl 2" continues the story of Vada Sultenfuss and her family, set two or so years on from the original. It's a pretty good sequel, I thought.

Vada (Anna Chlumsky) is a little older and a little more sophisticated these days, it seems. She's not just writing poetry, she's reading it, her favorite poet being a certain Alfred Biedermeier. Her father's (Dan Aykroyd's) new wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) is due to have a baby, and soon Vada will be a big sister. In between school and home, she's trying to figure out boys, but hasn't quite got there yet.

At school, Vada is given an assignment. She has to write an essay on someone who she admires and has never met. She decides to write it on her mother, who died while Vada was still a baby. Vada knows virtually nothing about her mother, and decides to travel to California, where her mother went to school. She stays with her uncle, and with the help of a certain young man (Austin O' Brian) tracks down her mother's old friends. What Vada discovers shocks her, some of it disgusts and confuses her. Still, there are other discoveries that fill her with pride.

"My Girl 2" is a little different to the first. In terms of the style of the film, it looks a little fresher, a little less dusty. Perhaps it's the California scenery, I don't know. It still has that retro feel, which is good (the film is set in the 1970s). Also, it feels a little more subdued. Vada/Anna isn't quite as hyper as she was in the first film, if that makes sense. She's still a great actress, and a shame she hasn't really been in anything lately.

Rather than being in a set few places, like the first film was, "My Girl 2" goes from one place to another, which kind of alters the way the film flows. I wouldn't say there is a lot of chemistry between Anna Chlumsky's "love interest" Austin O'Brien, but considering they're almost cousins-in-law that's probably not such a bad thing.

If you enjoyed the first film, "My Girl 2" is definitely worth picking up. A nice continuation of the story. Shame there wasn't a "My Girl 3", I reckon.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE AUSTIN O'BRIEN.......2006-07-26

I LOVE THIS MOVIE I WATCHED IT WITH MY COUSINS I LOOOVE AUSTIN O'BRIEN

5 out of 5 stars Cute Sequel...But could have found a better Nick.......2006-04-23

I rented "My Girl 2" after watching "My Girl" and I really enjoyed it. I liked how they got all of the same characters from the first movie, instead of getting all new actors and actresses, because I really hate when sequels are like that. Of course, they had to get a new boy for Vada to get to know since Thomas J. died in the first one, but for goodness sakes.....GET A BETTER NICK! AUSTIN O` BRIEN WAS NOT A GOOD ACTOR IN THIS MOVIE AT ALL! MACALUAY CULKIN WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN HE WAS. HIS HAIR WAS EXTREMELY TOO LONG, HIS MAKE-UP LOOKED TERRIBLE WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO KISS VADA, AND HE JUST...WAS NOT A GOOD ACTOR! THERE ARE PLENTY OF BETTER YOUNG ACTORS OUT THERE THAT I WOULD HAVE CHOSEN OVER AUSTIN O` BRIEN. HE IS JUST NOT THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT I WOULD HAVE PICKED FOR THE PART OF NICK. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.. it was a sweet movie full of laughter, happiness, romance among Vada and Nick at the end of the movie and both of them getting to be cousins and I also liked how Vada finally got to know some more information about her mother. I also liked how this movie was not as sad as the first one. Overall, I would definetely recommend at least renting this movie if not going ahead and buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Not as Sad as the First.......2006-03-27

This movie is really good. I love it.Anna Chlumsky is so hot.Austin O'Brian is a bad ass in this movie. His charecter is so funny.

Product Description

Based on a series of TRUE stories posted by Kim Ho Sik on the Internet describing his relationship with his girlfriend. These were later transformed into a best-selling book and a movie following the book closely. It describes the meeting of Kyun-woo (Cha) and an unnamed girl. Kyun-woo is shamed into assisting the girl because the other passengers mistakenly think she is his girlfriend. Once he helps her, Kyun-woo develops a deep sense of responsibility for her which enables him to tolerate (somehow) the girls abuses. SOON TO BE REMADE INTO ANOTHER AMERICAN REMAKE.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna Die?.......2007-01-04

Director: Kwak Jae-yong
Duration: 137 Minutes (director's cut)

A nice fellow who must try to pick up every girl who fits his type, Gyeon-woo had a less than ideal childhood. Being that his parents had wanted a daughter instead of a son they raised him as a girl until he was seven years old and he even had to use the women's section of the public bath with his mother. If this was not enough his mother is also quite willing to smack Gyeon-woo with any instrument close at hand if he stays out too late at night, including such items as a vacuum cleaner, a rolling pin, etc. Gyeon-woo even times what time he returns home hoping that his mother only has lighter instruments at hand. Told that he was smart at an early age by his parents, Gyeon-woo took these words to mean that he did not have to study at school and his grades were quite unspectacular. However, he did do well enough to begin his studies of engineering at a university, but he has absolutely no future prospects.

One night after being released from his term of military service Gyeon-woo hangs out with some of his old friends, but the real action of that night does not occur until he is headed to his aunt's home, a lady whose son died a year earlier and who knows a girl she would like Gyeon-woo to meet. Not too keen on going to his aunt's because of the way she squeezes his cheeks and kisses him, Gyeon-woo notices a beautiful girl precariously teetering at the edge of the terrain platform. Gyeon-woo pulls her back possibly saving the girl's life and they both board the train. Gyeon-woo considers the girl to be his type, but he cannot stand drunken girls. The girl wrapped in her haze of alcohol orders a young man to give up his seat for an older gentleman and when he does not do so she smacks him on the back of the head. As he gets up, the girl tells him not to wear pink again. As the train continues on its way, the girl vomits on the top of the older gentleman's head, calls Gyeon-woo "honey," and passes out. Being labeled "honey" by the girl, of course the other passengers of the train believe that Gyeon-woo and the girl are a couple. Therefore, Gyeon-woo takes the girl off the train, and after leaving her on bench at the station for a moment, goes back to retrieve her and so begins the film that likely began the huge South Korean cinema boom in East and Southeast Asia.

Based on a novel serialized on the internet, My Sassy Girl combines comedy and melodrama almost seamlessly. Gyeon-woo suffers both physically and mentally at the hands of the girl, but his strong desire to cure her of her inner sadness continues to drive him along until he falls truly in love with the girl and learns the minutiae of her personal being. The girl, who does indeed carry a deep sadness, tries to hold off the affections of Gyeon-woo while at the same time trying to change certain aspects of his demeanor changes also during the films long duration. There are certain points in the film where Gyeon-woo and the girl are finally reaching out to each other that are truly heart melting.

Like many other popular South Korean and Japanese films, My Sassy Girl is going to have an American remake. While I do not support remakes, hopefully the original film will finally be released in North America as well. A must see for fans of South Korean cinema and for fans of romantic comedies in general.

Amazon.com essential video

The best that can be said for There's a Girl in My Soup is that it is not quite as bad as its reputation. A belly flop in the careers of Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn (she was fresh off her Oscar® for Cactus Flower), this Boulting brothers production did nothing to showcase the sparkling comic talents of those two performers. Sellers has some nice moments early as a famous TV-host twit, whose career as a serial seducer is halted after meeting hippie chick Goldie. It's one double-entendre after another: "You only want one thing," says one of Sellers's conquests. "Yes, but what a lovely thing," he sighs. Seen now, the movie is most fun for its goofy look at the gestalt of swinging London: Sellers' automated bachelor pad was surely an inspiration to the Austin Powers folks, and his checkered beige suit must be seen to be believed. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not a Sellers market.......2005-11-19

Peter Sellers is rightly hailed as one of the screen's great comic geniuses. Unfortunately, even a genius falters, and Sellers had more than his share of misfires. In fact, when a Peter Sellers movie is bad, it goes far beyond the usual definition of the term. This 1970 sex farce is one of his worst, which means it's unmitigated garbage.

Sellers plays a middle-aged lothario who meets his match in a free-spirited young kook (Goldie Hawn, in her second starring film role), and before long, they're off on a series of wacky romantic adventures. Nothing seems more dated than this sort of '70s "mod" comedy, and nothing seems more wasteful than an actor of Sellers' stature wallowing in material clearly beneath him. Sellers and Hawn never click as a screen couple; he comes across too smarmy and she comes across too flighty to even be a likable pair.

1 out of 5 stars I hate this silly movie!!!!.......2005-11-13

stupid peter sellers is terrible in this movie, he plays a tv personality who seduces sexy women who are not sexy at all. goldie hawn is soooo ugly and she goes to bed with peter sellers nude, then the phone rings then peter is at the phone, then goldie gets out of bed, then i see her ass, then she puts on her robe (this movie is soooo immature!)

4 out of 5 stars Charming Rom-Com.......2005-10-27

This is a terrifically engaging May-December romance picture about a middle aged lothario (Peter Sellers) who begins to question his value system when he embarks on an affair with an outspoken hippie chick(Goldie Hawn) in swinging London. Sellers and Hawn are wonderful together and there is a discernible screen chemistry between them. My only qualm with the film is that it's central message throughout is to extol the virtues of romance and fidelity but the ending negates that for one of promiscuity.

3 out of 5 stars memorable interaction.......2005-10-04

'There's a girl in my soup' is memorable for its cute interaction between Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn. Although both Sellers and Hawn surely did better in other roles, their co-chemistry in this late Sixties-comedy deserves a closer look. Actually, I think it the only reason why this movie is still around.

Sellers acts out a pretty vain, succesful & womanizing host of a tv-show on cookery. Being truly English, he fully lives its corresponding glamor. American Goldie Hawn performs some pretty down-to-earth girl, having close ties to the underground pop-scene. Originating from these two different planets, somehow they connect.

However, their different social backgrounds never fade away -- this movie was shot in an era emphasizing on differences like that. Things get worse when Hawn messes up one of Sellers' refined wine-tastings. Gradually their differences take over, and the end of this movie inevitably sees the end of their relationship. Sellers goes on by chasing another attractive female, while Hawn disappears in the psychedelic-painted van of her underground pop-group.

4 out of 5 stars If you can bear the soundtrack, it's a GEM!.......2004-07-13

Terrible music that will unfortunately stick in your head for days, but Goldie and Peter are so witty, touching and hilarious in this movie, it's worth it. I especially enjoyed the scene where Peter's character helps Goldie's character move out of her boyfriend's flat...classic. Some great moments. (It might even make you cry - and not just because of the music!) Kind of an odd movie and probably an acquired taste, but I love to pull this one out every few years and watch it again.

A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Home Alone career, but Anna Chlumsky is unusually sophisticated in her understanding of her character and situation. Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are perfectly stable as the kids' single parents. Directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2007-06-06

I remember watching this movie when it came out and loving it. It's still one of my favorite films. Funny, touching, and wonderful era.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely powerful, with an effect that last decades.......2007-06-04

Whenever I think of this movie, I think of the death of the Thomas character and nothing else, but there's really much more to the movie than that. This could have been a very deep and moving film even if the whole bee-stinging incident was completely left out.

Okay, the movie starts out with a glimpse of the Sultenfuss family in their funeral home. And if I misspell any names they'll just have to remained misspelled, since I don't have the energy to look all this stuff up. Let me comment on something else, too. I watched this movie multiple times as a kid, and I still freaking forgot that the main character lived in a funeral home. That is a major, MAJOR part of the movie. How could I forget it? Amazing.

Well anyway, a woman shows up at the door of the funeral home asking for the make-up artist job. It seems that the owner of the home was smart enough to leave any reference to "deceased" out of the job description title in the newspaper. But the woman is a good sport and takes the job anyway, and since she lives in a motorhome she's there practially all the time, so she becomes like one of the family.

Well, while all this is going on, we follow the daughter of the funeral home owner, Veda, to see what a day in her life is like. It seems she constantly goes to a doctor and complains about how sick she is. We also find out she has a crush on her teacher, and because of him she's inspired to be a writer. So much that she takes a college level writing class over the summer. Pretty impressive for an [..], or however old she is.

She never hangs around with other girls, and spends all her time hanging around with her best friend Thomas instead. And although they do everything together, I still felt I didn't know very much at all about Thomas. I don't know if this was intentional on the part of the film makers or not. Honestly, it didn't seem that too much camera time was devoted to Thomas. The vast majority was spent on Veda and her dad. Her dad actually plays a big, big part of this movie. In fact, I would say that the development of his romantic relationship with the makeup lady and the effect it has on Veda is really the meat of the film. The sudden death of Thomas at the end and its particular effect is just the exclamation point to this long buildup.

Overall, this movie is a detailed account of an extraordinary character who already has a disposition to sadness and still is forced to face major issues at such a young age in life. I would say its even deeper than the Bridge to Terebithia book, which My Girl might have stemmed from. Honestly, as I watched this I found myself believing Veda wrote her own lines, because they're so much like what a child would say, especially in her wonderful description of Heaven.

I always used to think the title My Girl referred to her being Thomas's girl, then for a while I thought it referred to her being her dad's girl, and now I'm thinking that she's really the audience's girl. We as the audience are privileged to see all her dreams and secrets and fears that her writing teacher asks for but is only blessed enough to see after she confronts those fears at the very end of the movie.

Unless you can find a film that does a better job of addressing these issues, I would recommend My Girl as a must-see.

5 out of 5 stars THE BIGGEST NUMBER IN THE WORLD IS WHAT THIS FILM SHOULD GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-05

I LOVE MY GIRL!!!!This is my favorite movie of all time! And that won't ever change! I just saw it again[I KNOW I WATCHED IT ABOUT 20 TIMES!]and I started bawling[crying] at the scene when Vada is talking and crying over Thomas J.'s coffin during his funeral.I cry hard when I see that scene. This movie is very FUNNY! I wish there was a My Girl 3!!! Do NOT MISS THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Reviewer.......2007-03-22

Fantastic family film, excellent acting and strong plot. Humourous but also very real to life. The only element that may concern some parents is the girl reveals her panties getting into bed. But if a girl in her underwear does not concern you, this is a remarkably enjoyable family drama.

      5 out of 5 stars Recomended.......2007-03-09

This is a good family movie, with a great cast. It tells a good story, as it is narrated by the character. I love this movie and I recomend it to any movie lover.
