1 out of 5 stars A gross out to end all gross outs. .......2007-03-17

This is a film for really sick puppies. If you showed this movie to 100 random people in a theater, 99 would walk out within the first half hour. I'd probably stay.
It's not surprising that this was directed by the same guy that did "From Beyond" and the "Re-Animator" trilogy.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll hurl.
All that being said, I didn't shut this hideous monstrosity off.
Warped beyond belief.

5 out of 5 stars When In Doubt, Give 'Em The Gas..........2007-03-09

Dr. Feinstone (Corbin Bernsen), seemingly successful, mild-mannered dentist, comes completely unglued after witnessing his beautiful wife (Linda Hoffman) playing around w/ the new pool guy. This sends the good doctor into freefall, causing him to seek bloody vengeance, not only against wifey and poolman, but against anyone who is unlucky enough to think he's still sane! Dr. Feinstone uses nitrous oxide (the old laughing gas) to subdue his patients / victims, in order to give them an extremely thorough cleaning! His dental assistants suspect something's wrong, but try to get through the day anyway. Bad mistake! An IRS agent (Earl Boen, the police psychologist from Terminator 1 and 2) pays a visit to Finestone's office in order to blackmail him into free dental work. Feinstone fixes his mouth right up for him! Ouch! THE DENTIST also has Ken Foree (from the original Dawn Of The Dead) as the cop on the case, and cutey-pie Virginya Keehne as the young gal who just can't get in to see the doc. She does a very good Jamie Lee Curtis turn during the climax, and has one of the best lines of the movie! Highly recommended...

3 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Slasher Flick.......2006-11-27

The Dentist has that trademark Brian Yuzna bizarreness/dark comic feel to it. Personally, I've enjoyed every film of his (Return of the Living Dead 3, Bride of Re-Animator, Beyond Re-Animator...).

The dentist's chair was a great choice of scenery for a horror film as that is a place where humans are most susceptible to the advances of a deranged psychopath. The dark humor is found throughout along with a decent storyline which should keep you glued to the tube. The gore scenes are okay, and Yuzna's managed to make some pretty nasty "dentist-ized" human atrocities towards the end.

If you dig Bride of Reanimator and ROTLD 3, then you should enjoy this fun flick.

3 out of 5 stars The Dentist (1996).......2005-12-31

Director: Brian Yuzna
Cast: Corbin Bernsen, Linda Hoffman, Michael Stadvec, Ken Foree, Tony Noakes, Molly Hagan, Patty Toy, Jan Hoag, Virginya Keehne, Earl Boen.
Running Time: 92 minutes
Rated R for graphic violence including scenes of dental torture, sexuality and some language.

"The Dentist" starts on the morning of Dr. Alan Feinstone (Corbin Bernsen) and his wife Brooke's (Linda Hoffman) wedding anniversary. On the surface Mr. and Mrs. Feinstone seem to have a nice life, a beautiful home in Los Angeles and he has a successful career with responsibility but beneath things are very wrong. Alan discovers that Brooke is having an affair with Matt (Michael Stadvec) the swimming pool cleaner, to add to his humiliation Alan then discovers that Matt is also having sex with Paula Roberts (Lise Simms) one of his next door neighbours and to top it all off he owes the IRS, who are breathing down his neck, a shed load of money. Alan starts to lose his mind, he convinces himself that everything is decayed and rotten, just like his patient's teeth, and it's up to him to fix it. That morning at work he begins to take his frustrations and anger out on his patients.

Although "The Dentist" is intended to be a cheesy, fun little film, director Brian Yuzna ensures that the movie delivers the shocks and thrills that many more serious movies attempt to dispense. Despite suffering somewhat from the lack of background on the central characters, and thus allowing events that should have been built up to take place over a couple of days, the movie is intriguing, generally well scripted and well paced which allows the viewer to maintain interest, even during the more ludicrous of moments. "The Dentist" suffers, on occasion, from dragging but unlike the much inferior releases of late, there are only sporadic uninteresting moments, and in general the movie follows itself nicely.

Corbin Bernsen was very convincing in the role of the sadistic, deranged and perfectionist Dr. Alan Feinstone. The way Bernsen is able to credibly recite his lines, especially with regards to the foulness and immorality of sex (particularly fellatio), is something short of marvellous. While many actors may have trouble portraying a cleanliness obsessed psycho without it coming off as too cheesy or ridiculous, Bernsen seems to truly fit the personality of the character he attempts to portray and thus makes the film all that more enjoyable. Had "The Dentist" not been intended to be a fun, almost comical, horror movie, Bernsen's performance would probably have been much more powerful. Sadly, the rest of the cast (including a pre-fame Mark Ruffalo) failed to put in very good performances and although the movie was not really damaged by this, stronger performances could have added more credibility to the flick. "The Dentist" is not a horror film that is meant to be taken seriously but is certainly enjoyable, particularly for fans of cheesy horror. Far from perfect but far from bad as well, "The Dentist" is a flick that is easily worth watching at least once.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-11-18

As Dr. Alan Feinstone, Corbin Bernsen turns in a marvelously deranged performance in "The Dentist".

With his already obsessive compulsive tendencies in high gear, the IRS hounding him, and a very suspicious acting wife; Dr. Alan Feinstone is losing his sanity more and more each day.

When the Doc indeed does realize that his wife is having an affair with the local pool boy, it sets off a string of events that lead to torture, murder, ant total mayhem!

"The Dentist" is a solid film! Bernsen makes the character of Dr. Feinstone relatable and hateable at the same time. Even though he is completely out of his gourd, the audience will still feel sympathy towards him. That my friends.....is damn good acting.

A nice solid cast of supporting actors round out this gem of a film. Excellent direction, good killings and gore, and effective pacing will keep you entertained throughout the movies run.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

1 out of 5 stars If only I could give zero.........2006-06-04

I've been burned so I've learned: don't buy indie gay movies - rent them.

This movie, aside from being the reason I lost 2 hours of my life, is a mess. The characters are tired cliches and are poorly portrayed by an amateur cast. As one other review noted, the only 'attractive' guy in the whole cast was the one who was supposed to be the ugly guy the 'hot' one settled for .. add in a truly messy ending that comes from nowhere and adds nothing and you've got a total waste of 104 minutes.

Have the directors never SEEN a romantic comedy? Regurgitating tired stereotypes and cliches on a low budget is something we can all do at any given gay bar on any night of the week.. save the celluloid for things worth seeing more than once.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of Promise, But No Delivery.......2006-01-03

I wanted to like this movie. I ordered the DVD hoping it was a controversial satire on the superficiality of the gay ghetto, as promised. What I got was a mildly amusing comedy, with nowhere near as much punch as I expected from the premise.

There were problems immediately. Although he has a perfect body, John-Michael Lander as Christopher portrays a character so unlikable, it's not possible to warm to him at all, let alone develop an interest in what happens to him as the plot progresses. Some may find him irresistibly attractive, but frankly I wouldn't have given him a second glance no matter how much he masked what a creep he is - perfect abs and all. A bigger problem to me was the character played by David Vincent. The film's premise - the brunt of the "hard-hitting satire" - is the fact that Christopher's boyfriend is supposed to be the opposite of what we've been "conditioned" to find attractive because (gasp!) he doesn't work out in a gym and actually has love handles (horrors!). He also doesn't have a glamorous job (I mean, really, who knows any gay men like that?) and - now here's the most shocking thing I could imagine in a satire on gay values - he sleeps in PAJAMAS! Now I know a few guys in Chelsea who might find this impossible to believe, but despite the love handles and the pajamas, the "out-of-shape, chunky, under-employed geek" turns out to be the most attractive man in the whole film. Somehow I think that some of the people this film was intended for won't quite get that.

I liked what this picture was trying to say - Christopher is shallow, superficial, vain and annoying, and more or less gets what he deserves in the end. It's not his promiscuity that bothers us, but the way he treats his conquests, refusing to ever have a second date, and finding the most ridiculous faults imaginable in each potential suitor. But the telling of the tale just isn't very interesting, or very funny, and if they really wanted to make it a satire, it should have been far more merciless to maintain my interest.

Maybe I'm just old enough to remember when gay men didn't spend all their time in a gym, staring at the mirror to confirm their own beauty. I seem to recall that when I first came out in the early 70's, gym bunnies were few and far between in the gay male community. In those days, you were either skinny, fat or average, and if people judged you by your looks, it was solely on the basis of whether or not you had a pretty face. The main things we used back then to attract people were wit, charm, personality and intelligence, along with keeping ourselves reasonably well groomed. Now all I hear and see everywhere is stats, stats and more stats - numbers for waists, chests, arms, and thighs, together with demands that everyone have a perfect body, perfect clothes and a perfect career, or forget it. I was hoping that this film might raise some serious objections to such values, but when the final credits were rolling I felt I hadn't really seen or heard very much to either provoke meaningful discussion or challenge these attitudes, which is what I expect a good satire to do. Some may find it quite enjoyable, and feel it delivers on its promises, but I was less than satisfied when it was over.

2 out of 5 stars Stereotypical Gay Characters.......2005-11-15

This movie reminded me of the series QAF, with characters that you love to hate. Some of the things they have in common:
Stereotypical gay characters, lead egocentric characters, over the top drama, and typical bar behavior.
In addition this movie adds overbearing gawd-awful music and unrealistic camp in almost every scene.
Why did I give it 2 stars? Even though I thought the confrontational ending was a bit over the top, I liked it. The message got through to the audience. I did ask myself, however, why the confronting person felt that he was morally superior when he himself was still lurking in the bar's dark corners.
Denial of reality all around here but still worth 2 stars for providing us with *some* hope.

2 out of 5 stars Not the worst I have seen.......2005-08-25

I am sure that lots of people will never like this movie becouse of cheap acting and cheap budjet. Charectors very boring I think this movie had lack of the good director and better screen-writer. Don't waste your money and time on this one.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain mean.......2004-11-30

This movie starts out as a romantic comedy and then does a 180 in the last ten minutes. The movie turns into a really bad drama complete with a performance worthy of a true drama queen. The ending is just plain mean to the viewer!

No, it's the cast. A homeowner (Jeff Daniels) shoots an intruder, who turns out to be his business partner. A police officer (Robert Forster) suspects a setup. His wife (Joan Allen), who didn't know they even had a gun in the house, she gets a job with a reclusive computer billionaire (Gary Sinise). The billionaire's former assistant (Josh Brolin) has left the company to work in the movies, and he falls for a street waif (Anna Paquin). Daniels's lawyer (André Braugher), who is gay, also falls for the waif, much to the chagrin of his unstable partner (David Schwimmer) as well as the waif's unstable brother (Giovanni Ribisi). Based on a play by Chicago playwright Keith Reddin (who also wrote the screenplay) and directed by theater director turned first-time movie director James D. Stern, It's the Rage never transcends its theatrical roots. Instead of a character type, each person in the story represents a different (but equally shallow) facet of rage. It's all just an elaborate setup to preach about gun control and how our society is increasingly a society of rage. What the world needs, the movie is saying, is a little more self- control and understanding. Obviously, what it also needs is a better use of such a talented cast. --Andy Spletzer

4 out of 5 stars I HAVE A GUN... SO DO I... ME TOO... .......2006-01-09

I think the film got a little problem - it has hard time establishing itself in a genre. On one hand it's satirical and funny story but seems that it has too much morality about it. On the other hand, if it's a morality tale, it's not as serious as a morality tale should be.
Here we have a bunch of characters whose paths intersect chaotically: Warren - an extremely jealous husband, Annabel - a girl mad about money, Sidney - her junkie brother, Chris - an inhibited and sedated homosexual, Morgan - eccentric computer genius. All they have in common - are handguns, these people can't imagine themselves without weapons. Well, and the fact that they all are a bit crazy. And I guess that was one of the messages of the movie - all people are weirdos of their own kind, and it's irresponsible to let them have guns, because a situation may occur when they won't be able to restrain their emotions. And such situations eventually happen in this picture as you can guess. Its moral - guns are evil - is shown to us in every possible way although rather light-hearted and humoristic. Therefore not very convincing.
But if to take "It's the Rage" as a comedy, it works just fine. There's a lot of hilarious moments, and the episode with Giovanni Ribisi's character in a shooting range ("Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?! Well, there's nobody else here, so you must be talking to me!") is one of the funniest I've seen lately. Besides brilliant Ribisi there are many excellent actors here: Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, Robert Forster, Anna Paquin, David Schwimmer, Josh Brolin and Gary Sinise. They all are a solid reason to watch the movie.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT Performances by all the cast & director but NO Message.......2003-07-29

This movie ain't that bad as portrayed by the amazon reviwers on this site. I thought all the actors were superb. The shoplifter from X Men showed another dimension I never knew she had. All in all every actor was solid here and I adored them all. The film, what with being coined as an anti-gun (ala Bowling For Columbine) satire or commentary didn't really hit a chord with this viewer in that sense. But never the less it did have a strong plot. I patcularly liked Gary Sinies's character complaining about a common problem in todays society - too much information. Also the special effects in his billionaires house's many TV Screens were great and hi-tech. There was a couple of times I laughed out loud during this movie btw. So it's dark comedy with a twist indeed.

2 out of 5 stars Scattershot.......2003-02-01

Based on a play (which I've never seen), "It's the Rage" follows an ensemble of coincidentally linked characters either perpetrating or victimized by gun violence of all kinds. The ultimate message-a gun is the only thing separating an ordinary but otherwise stressed out person from becoming a murderer-seems reasonable. But the film's flashy and shallow textures undercut its own serious agenda. Or maybe it's the other way around. In either case, "It's the Rage" may be intriguing on its Tarantino-esque surface and commendable for its anti-gun social message, but the film can't help but fail as these two impulses fight it out. Ultimately, "It's the Rage is bloodless in every sense of the word.

5 out of 5 stars ...brilliant!!!.......2002-09-24

a lot of people miss the point labeling this as anti-gun propaganda. its not saying "guns are bad, dont use guns", its making fun of the cheesy crime movies meant to portray human nature and street life and all that mess. there's all these movies beating the same cliche characters into the ground... this movie takes EVERY cliche crime movie character you have EVER seen and puts them all in a big gun totin wad

if you dont instantly label it as one of those "guns kill people" movies, you should have a great time watching it, its just a beautiful movie man, absolutely beautiful

2 out of 5 stars Godawful morality tale missing the point.......2002-04-22

For a while, I thought this movie was some sort of scathing satire. Of what, I wasn't sure, but there are some absolutely hysterical and stupid things that go on in this movie. Apparently, the intention of this farce is to be some sort of moral commentary on guns in our society. Unfortunately for IT'S THE RAGE, in order for a morality tale to be at all successful, it has to be watchable AND believable. This movie, supposedly anti-firearm, is at its most hilarious when the firearms are being waved about.

The "ensemble" cast has many fine, fine actors, all of whom probably thought that by making this movie, the world would be a better place and they could pick up a paycheck at the same time. Oh well.

Ribisi is hilarious as the meth-junkie with paranoid schizophrenia. His scene in the shooting range is one of the most amusing things I've ever seen. His little kleptomaniac whore of a sister was also really funny, but I recommend seeing Reese Witherspoon in FREEWAY. Also, the scene in the bar where everyone goes for their gun at once was absolutely hilarious! If only they all shot each other, the credits would have rolled, we would have satisfylingly hit rewind. Alas.

Jeff Daniels is funny as the psychopathic white-bred suburban slimeball. Many of his lines were really sharp, and since we didn't care about his dead business partner, why should we? Gary Sinise is a great actor who is once again unfortunately cast, this time as the mentally imbalanced and paranoid recluse billionaire. Gary Schwimmer, ala FRIENDS, plays a gay guy with all the brilliance that cliche can deliver. THIS character suffers from manic depression. There is also a former assistant of the paranoid billionaire who works in a video store and suffers from romantic delusions. We just KNOW he's not fit for survival in THIS ugly, ugly world.

To all of these loopy, unintentionally comic parts we have Joan Allen as the "straightman." She goes through the film having bad day after bad day. As if people weren't awful BEFORE they invented guns. One of the prerequisites of inventing guns in the first place is awfulness, thus the supposed MORAL of this tale is missing the point.

This movie has many problems: superficial characters, goofy script, "missed points", blathering pretentiousness, inane coincidences, unintentional self-parody, etcetera.

What are we to morally conclude from IT'S THE RAGE? Not that society would be better off without guns. Certainly not that guns CAUSE rage in society. Rather, we can draw the lesson from this movie a point that is actually pretty obvious and uncontroversial: psychopaths, manic depressives, paranoid schizophrenics, kleptomaniac whoring minors, and insane billionaires ought not to have guns....well duh. IT'S THE RAGE wants to be anti-gun, yet its case for solving the symptoms fails. It does --sorta-- make the case that we really need to deal with the disease.
