While this set doesn't have all the Marilyn Monroe movies, it is a good set to have. Marilyn is beautiful in all of the enclosed movies. She acted various parts and did so in different ways. This set is a good start for anyone beginning a Monroe collection!

Marilyn Monroe Special Anniversary Collection.......2007-01-10

I bought this DVD set for my father for his birthday. He just turned 83 years old and he absolutely have always adored Marilyn Monroe and he was so thrilled when he got the set and he said the color on the DVD cover was absolutely beautiful and he (my parents and I are deaf) was happy that the movies was subtitled and he was able to fully understand everything which in back of old days, the movies were not captioned and he would just guess what the stories were about but now he does not have to play guess anymore.

I bought this as a gift for my 15 year old neice! Marilyn is at her best in these classics! She never goes out of style! I would recommend this set to any one that either wanted to start collecting all of her movies or just the best ones.

While the films are a great choice and the prints are in great shape, how about some commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes. Except for SEVEN YEAR ITCH, there is nothing. Marilyn made so few films, only 12 starring roles, as compared to other superstars who've made dozens, I wish there were more to each movie...expecially deleted scenes. I know every one of these film had deletions, but no one has ever said WHAT WAS DELETED. In the case of NIAGARA, much must have been deleted because it seems so choppy. Never sure what day is when. In BLONDES, the first part of the movie also seems a bit disjointed, and one night moves into the next without explanation. I know Mr. Zanack was a stickler for short films and he cut his films a bit too much. So when and if new materials are found and put in these films, I won't be buying any more of them.

A curious picture in many ways: Marilyn Monroe was the superstar, Yves Montand new to Hollywood, but she seems peripheral to the action and he's in almost every scene. Meanwhile, director George Cukor, always happy with theatrical material, can't make the off-off-Broadway milieu come to believable life. In short, Let's Make Love lacks the sparkle promised by its talent roster, and for Monroe especially the bloom is off the rose. This 1960 film was her next to last, and she appears weary, although isolated moments have the old oomph (and she has a terrific romp through her first number, Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy"). Cameos by Milton Berle, Bing Crosby, and Gene Kelly increase the time-capsule feeling. The biggest failing is the lack of chemistry between Monroe and Montand, yet offscreen they had a romance during filming. A curious picture indeed. --Robert Horton

Not Marilyn's best but still amusing.......2007-04-18

As has been pointed out, Marilyn had to do this movie as she was under contract. I don't however feel like it showed. For a role with little depth I think she did great. The redeeming aspects of Lets Make Love are the hilarious comic scene with Milton Berle trying desperately to teach Yves Montand American jokes. Also it is simply a joy just to watch Marilyn on screen. Her song and dance numbers are quite risque for 1960. ("My name's Lolita....and...I'm not supposed to play....with boys!") And as usual she just shines onscreen. Her famous number "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is in the movie as well. Musical lovers and Marilyn fans will be sure to enjoy this gem.

get it to see the ending & MM at her most beautiful!!.......2007-02-02

i was very excited to watch this legendary MM movie. not legendary in a good way, but in a bad way! i had read all the mm books and had heard that this movie was so terrible. of course i did not bother to spend my $ after hearing that; curiosity did not stir me. then i saw on a mm bio dvd, a clip of her performing "my heart belongs to daddy." i sat entranced watching mm work her usual "cute and innocent meets sexy & sexual" act. i also loved the idea that she was taking on the role of Lolita in the song. then i saw that this performance was from "lets make love." i said, "wait a min! this is the movie that's supposed to be horrible?! yet mm was so good in just one scene?" then curiosity caught me. i had to see if this movie was bad or good. as it turned out, it is both...the whole movie, at least the comedy factor, seems to be strained & tensed. like they make the lamest jokes hoping to get a laugh. so the script is not very good. but that doesn't stop the plot from being lame. it is very interesting; to see how jean marc (yves montand) will play a satire of himself just to win MM's heart. and she isn't a fan of him either. yves is a famous billionaire and mm is an actress in broadway theatre. initially i did not like mr. montand, his voice, him. but he grew on me, after i watched this a few more times, and i began to really like him. maybe b/c thru his character. jean m is very sweet, and always gets treated badly by the theatre people (he isn't funny or talented). and i began to feel very sorry for him. i think yves played this character well. i love his accent, but i do not like his voice. i'm still in awe of how he was actually a successful singer. one part you will love yves/jean marc in, is his "mime" act of a man getting on to a train. after he gets milton berle to assist him. he is very good and entertaining! it is a humorous piece. mariyln and all the theatre people clap thunderously for him. you will love that scene!... i absolutely love mm and frankie vaughn in the "specializtion" numeber. that song is so good it should be a classic! mm is her usual charming, sexy self, and Vaughn has a wonderful voice...but there are many tedious, mundane, useless, boring parts in this movie. that's what makes it bad. i just fast forward it. it is mainly, when jean m would talk with his friends (the old man and/or tony randall). i felt they were really trying to take up time with it. i was very irked. that's what a lot of movies do...it cannot be denied that mm does look tired, overweight and weary. her acting is like the movie; shines only sometimes. but i liked how she was now playing "marilyn monroe--the ordinary, working class girl." we all know she was many other types before; gold digger, ukellee singer, spectacled, half-blind gold digger, e.t.c. it was refreshing, strange, but nontheless interesting to see her in this role. and she has an awesome voice too! it is showcased in this movie...you must also see this for m's beauty! she doesn't look beautiful sometimes, but it seems like when she has the right hair & make up, she's one of the most beautiful women in the world. it is the scenes when she and yves rehearses singing on the bench, when she jogs thru the street with him embarassingly lagging behind ( this is her most beautiful in the movie!!), he drops her to her house and tells her she shouldn't work so hard, when she goes in to confront "mr. jean marc" (with the real one with her!), and the ending in the elevator when he tries to win her back...i think it is b/c she has tons of eye make up on. white instead of black. it is a great 60's look... the ending is wonderful and humorous b/c mm goes in to confront jean m (for trying to take the theatre) when he is really with her all along! and when she finds out who he is and runs into the elevator, and he comes in, i don't know, but to me, it is one of the sweetest, sexiest, most romantic scenes i've seen. he hugs her sexily from behind, feels her hair with his mouth, nuzzles her neck, all while she scolds him, but you can tell by her half smile she is just talking hot air, and really does forgive him for his "trick." then he sings the "lets make love" song for a few seconds and they sexily kiss. it is all so sexy! yves & mm are so beautfiful together! his most handsome is the ending...so as i said the movie is not great, but there are many good scenes that you should still get it. i think it is worth buying & watching. especially if you're a true mm fan.

I wish I could say I really loved this movie. I really do. Personally, I don't think I've ever seen Marilyn look sexier than she does with her romp through Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy", in that blue sweater and black stockings. Yowza !! And I like her with that little bit of extra weight ! But now, onto the movie. It, quite frankly, stinks. As other reviewers have noted, there is no on-screen chemistry between Yves Montand and Marilyn, which, also noted, is wierd for a couple that had a brief, off-screen affair. The story itself of a French billionaire falling for an off-Broadway actress who apears in a musical that portrays him in an unflattering light...well, let's just say it's not very believable. Marilyn seems to realize herself that the script itself is weak; it often seems like she is sleepwalking through her lines. Tony Randall is completely wasted. George Cukor's direction seems uncertain; it seems as though he and the rest of the crew walked away during those long, suffering, boring, close-up romantic conversations between Montand and MM that dominate the film because they realized the script stunk and there were no sparks on-screen whatsoever. And that cinematography...it seems like every time they show Marilyn, someone smeared Vaseline on the lens to give her a sort of "being in a fog" look, even though her beauty does shine through.

In the end, though, this is one of Marilyn's weakest films. Good to know that she bounced back wonderfully in her next - and last - outing, John Huston's 'The Misfits'. Makes you wonder how 'Something's Got to Give' would have turned out had she lived.

Only fans of Marilyn need apply........2006-07-24

It is interesting to watch this film because it is M.M.'s second to last (completed) film. She was a BIG star when it was made!

As an entertaining movie, it is a dud. But to watch her work, scene for scene, She is wonderful! Watch the way she moves her body when she dances. She gyrates, she shimmies...and yeah,though she was somewhat overweight in this film she shows herself off with sensuality and abandon. I would bet she was feeling insecure about her weigh during filming.I do know that her (3rd)marriage was crumbling and she was 33 years old at the time. Remember...she just couldn't make it to the set alot of days...personal demons.

Watch her act. The Actors Studio stuff is here. See her try to give more meaning to some of her lines...tries to dig deeper then she needed to. (The dressing room scene where she tells the story of Abe Lincoln and the scene in the resturant with Montand.)

Look at her react while Frankie Vaughan sings "Crazy Eyes" to her. She doesn't say a word but she is marvelous! She loves the camera and the camera loves her. She is so cute in this scene.

Her hair is bad in this film. The continuity rarely matches from one scene to the next. Her costumes were probably racy in 1960 but are just awful today. Why did they put her in that bulky sweater for her first number? Makes her look bulky.

Oh well. She looked better in her next film, "The Misfits".
And she slayed them whenever she appeared in her uncompleted "Something's Got To Give". She lost all of the weight she exibits in "Lets Make Love" and appeared with no costume at all in her famous pool scene.

If you are a student of Mariln Monroe, you have to watch "Let's Make Love".

Marilyn's Last Musical.......2006-07-20

When "Let's Make Love" was first released by Twentieth Century Fox in 1960, it was eagerly awaited because of the original teaming of superstar Marilyn Monroe with the French actor Yves Montand. Directed by the legendary George Cukor, who certainly could handle musical comedies as his work on the 1954 "A Star Is Born" and the 1964 "My Fair Lady" demonstrates, there was every reason to believe this would be a very entertaining film.

However, even in 1960, when the film seemed rather daring in many ways, it was just not quite as good as one had hoped. Looking at it again, after many years, this writer had hopes that there might be something I missed when I first saw it. Sadly, the film misfires on a number of things. The magic between Monroe and Montand is just not there, and that's remarkable because we all heard about their offscreen love affair (which Montand's wife, actress Simone Signoret, tolerated, believing it would quickly end as it actually did). Nevertheless, one can see glimpses of the talents of both stars and I still remain impressed with Montand's very capable dancing and his competent singing.

Marilyn seldom looked as beautiful and sexy as she did in this film. Her costumes were quite sensational in 1960. Her hair had been changed to the popular bouffant style of the time. Her best singing in the film is in an updated version of the Cole Porter classic, "My Heart Belongs To Daddy." Her voice, however, had become increasingly husky and it often made it hard to understand the lyrics of the songs written for the movie, including the title song.

In the story, Montand's character is aided by Milton Berle, Bing Crosby, and Gene Kelly, in rather delightful cameos. They try to help him with his comedy, his singing, and his dancing and, typical of Hollywood magic, he does succeed in impressing Monroe's character, who is so taken with singer Frankie Vaughan. However, it is still difficult to believe that she would actually drop Vaughan for Montand, despite learning the truth that he really IS a billionaire. By the way, I was quite impressed with Vaughan's smooth, sophisticated singing.

Almost lost in the shuffle with the wonderful Tony Randall, who did so well in dealing with another Fox sexpot, Jayne Mansfield, in "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter." Randall turned in one of his typically delightful performances, as he tried to help Montand in his efforts to attract Monroe.

This film proved to be the last production that Marilyn Monroe completed for Twentieth Century Fox, where she had made most of her films. It was followed by the intriguing drama "The Misfits," directed by John Huston, the only time she worked with Clark Gable (in his very last film), and another musical comedy at Fox, "Something's Gotta Give," also directed by Cukor. It has been well-documented how Monroe's increasing dependency on prescription drugs interferred with her work and led Fox to fire her, only to reconsider it just before she died in early August 1962, at the age of 36.

Two of the 1952 pictures, showing very different sides of the new actress, are included here. One is Monkey Business, Howard Hawks's raucous comedy about a youth serum, in which top-lined stars Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers regress to a state of adolescent abandon, with Monroe doing spot-on supporting duty. Don't Bother to Knock gives Marilyn her first lead role, in a tense little film noir; she's a babysitter with an unstable streak, a fine performance hinting at depths rarely touched in her career.

In Niagara, Monroe is a full-fledged sex goddess, a scheming wife tormenting husband Joseph Cotten in their cabin by the falls. This Technicolor slice of pseudo-Hitchcock is a fun location picture with a genuinely exciting climax. Otto Preminger's River of No Return has Marilyn livened up by the presence of costar Robert Mitchum, in a strong outdoorsy Western that catches the two stars in appealing form. By the time of 1960's Let's Make Love, MM looks tired. This backstage musical is more interesting as a time capsule than as a romance, although one number shines: "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Thankfully movies such as these keep this incredible legend alive and Marilyn will in this way always shine the brightest and she always lit the screen up in a way that nobody else ever could...Marilyn was the true meaning of SUPERSTAR...we love and miss you Marilyn and thank you for leaving behind a treasure chest of magic for all of us to savor and enjoy!!!

Niagara is a (flawed) Gem.......2006-01-01

I bought the 1st Diamond collection for my wife (a devoted Marilyn fan) and we were both impressed with the quality of the restorations. We were looking for more of the same with the Marilyn II collection. Although I ordered the collection well before Christmas, I didn't receive it until the day after Christmas. The tracking site showed it ready for pickup on December 18. When we received it we first viewed Niagara. The restoration was very good. I've been to the Falls many times and I got a kick out of how little things had changed since this movie was shot. Joseph Cotton was very convincing as the tortured soul who was infatuated with Marilyn. The action was well-paced and kept you in suspense during the last half of the movie. Unfortunately, this DVD was defective and the picture broke up 30 minutes into the movie and we lost about 10 minutes of the movie. I went to Amazon's site and after going through a short questionaire I was able to print out a postage-paid mailer without having to talk to anyone. I returned the collection for replacement due to arrive in a week. Hopefully this one will not be defective since we are looking forward to viewing the other DVDs in this set.

Waiting for the soundtrack of the DIAMOND COLLECTION , Volume II. This collection merits a soundtrack........2005-12-19

After The DIAMOND COLLECTION of Marilyn Monroe DVD was released,
a soundtrack CD was also released with many interesting tracks.
Yet this time around, no soundtrack was released. I am waiting
for a soundtrack with the songs Marilyn sings in NIAGARA (KISS),
River of No Return, and Lets Make Love, as well as the main themes from Don't Bother to Knock, and Monkey Business. There must be enough tracks in the vaults of 2oth Century Fox to include as Bonus items of Marilyn Monroe singing, deleted songs
from her movies, alternate takes, etc. We Marilyn Monroe fans
demand that a soundtrack CD to the Marilyn Monroe DIAMOND COLLECTION vol. II be released.

Claudette Colbert adds her special charms to LET'S MAKE IT LEGAL, a charming B-comedy from Twentieth Century-Fox, which also features Marilyn Monroe in one of her early "cheesecake cameo" roles.

Claudette Colbert plays Miriam, who is in the final stages of divorcing her gambling husband Hugh (Macdonald Carey). But Hugh wants to stay married and is willing to pull every trick in the book to ensure Miriam stays with him. Competition arrives in the form of Victor (Zachary Scott), Miriam's highschool sweetheart, a self-made millionaire who quickly begins wooing her all over again. It's going to be the battle to end all battles as Hugh and Victor go head-to-head in their efforts to win Miriam.

Barbara Bates and a young Robert Wagner co-star. Marilyn Monroe's role of Joyce, a client of Hugh's, is quite small, but Fox has issued this film and a few others as supplements to the `Marilyn Monroe Diamond Collection' box sets. Fans will enjoy it, but fans of Claudette Colbert will love it even more.

Let's Make it Legal is a film about a couple who are divorcing. The wife (Claudette Colbert) has decided that she has had enough of her husband's (MacDonald Carey) gambling and calls it quits. It is obvious that he still loves her and their grown daughter (Barbara Bates) does all she can to fix them up again. However, an old flame (Zachary Scott), now a well-known political figure, comes into town and practically sweeps the newly single wife off her feet, creating a stir in the family.

Although this film has been entered into the Marilyn Monroe collection and features her photo on the cover, this is one of her early roles and therefore she is hardly in the film. Her part is as a client of Carey. She performs the way a new actress would, slightly forced but undeniably sexily.

The real star of this film is Claudette Colbert, obviously older than she was in her prime but still quite beautiful. She plays her part confidently as the epitome of a desirable woman who takes care of her family with ease and still has time to do the things that make her happy.

Zachary Scott is attractive and somewhat reminiscent of Clark Gable, a co-star of Colbert's in several films. However, he does not have the same chemistry with her that Gable did.

MacDonald Carey, however, does. Even in the few scenes in which his character gets along with his former wife, sparks fly.

Barbara Bates is very beautiful as the daughter of the separated pair. She plays her part sympathetically as the new adult who cannot do anything for herself. She is appropriately childlike.

Overall, this film is better than one might expect. It is peppered with witty dialogue and a sweet plot. It is certainly no masterpiece, but it is a nice way to spend 76 minutes.

Lets Make It Legal.......2005-09-13

What a delightful movie set in the time when couples still slept in separate single beds. The idea seems ritzy for that time period and so common place now. The cast is excellent. Marilyn Monroe has a very small part. You notice Marilyn and keep thinking about her even after the film is over. I have so enjoyed this movie and I hope you will too, but only if you like the older movies.

Twentieth Century Fox Rip Off.......2004-05-31

Looking at the cover art (with images exclusively of Marilyn Monroe), you would probably think that this is a Marilyn Monroe movie. It is not. She has a very small part in the movie, is on screen only briefly, and has virtually nothing to do with the plot. Aside from the Marilyn Monroe issue, I found the movie un-funny, boring and forgettable. I'm going to throw my copy away, so as not to burden anyone else with it. I don't know, but I'll bet that "Let's Make It Legal" was not the original title of the movie, but was added later to make it sound "Marilyn-esque". Don't get ripped off like me!

LET'S MAKE IT MARILYN - A BEAUTIFUL LOOKING TRANSFER.......2004-04-20

"Let's Make It Legal" is the delightful little comedy about a grandmother (Claudette Colbert) who, after divorcing her husband, Hugh (Macdonald Carey) discovers that an old flame, Victor (Zachary Scott) still has the `hots' for her and intends on turning his flame into an inferno with a vengeance. Robert Wagner costars as Colbert's devilish son-in-law. So where's Marilyn Monroe in all this? She's the sexy siren in hot pursuit of Vic's affections. But he's all ice when it comes to her charms. Go figure. It's a good thing this film wasn't included as part of Marilyn Monroe: The Diamond Collection because for all its cutsie cuddliness, this one's more cubic zirconium.
TRANSFER: Lots to smile about here. The black and white picture genuinely sparkles. Blacks are solid, the gray scale is perfectly balanced and age related artifacts are, for the most part, nonexistent. Minor edge enhancement and some video noise (particularly in plaid patterns) crop up now and then but truthfully, this is a superb looking transfer. The audio has been re-channeled to two stem stereo with predictable limited range. Nevertheless the soundtrack is smooth.
EXTRAS: Come on, what did you expect for a film of this limited appeal. You get some Marilyn trailers. Enjoy!
BOTTOM LINE: Even if you're not a fan of Monroe (and I'd like to meet the man who isn't!) this silly little programmer is easy on the eyes and tingly all over, but especially on the heart.
