Jerry Lewis conjured up one of his simplest concepts for this 1961 hit, but it required a lot of scaffolding. The Ladies Man puts love-scarred Jerry (who has sworn off women) in an all-girl boarding house, infuriated by the constant temptation. Except for the opening sequences, the film is entirely shot in the four-story-high, cut-away set of the boarding house, one of the most elaborate indoor sets ever made in Hollywood up to that time. Lewis, as director, finds dozens of angles to shoot within the set; this movie is one of the reasons the French are always talking about his directorial genius. (Jean-Luc Godard, who once called Lewis "the only one in Hollywood who's doing something different, the only one who isn't falling in with the established categories," borrowed the cut-away building idea for his film Tout va bien.) There's some great physical stuff, such as Lewis trying desperately to save the crushed hat of visiting tough guy Buddy Lester, plus a lot of Lewis vocal whining, especially concerning his name: Herbert Heebert, not Herby Heebert. The film has its share of gags falling flat, but for Lewis fans it's prime stuff, not far from the high-water mark of The Nutty Professor. --Robert Horton

It's hard to imagine a finer Don Quixote than Peter O'Toole, who's spent most of his career with a slightly mad, dreaming look in his marvelous eyes. O'Toole's suitability for the role is tested by the Broadway treatment of Man of La Mancha, the film version of the hit stage musical. Everybody knows "The Impossible Dream," that indomitable hymn to, well, quixotic questing, and it is indeed the best of the Spanish-inflected songs. Despite the location shooting in Italy, Love Story director Arthur Hiller can't elude the stagey concept (in which Cervantes, imprisoned by the Inquisition, acts out the tale of Don Quixote for his fellow prisoners). James Coco, as Sancho Panza, is overshadowed by the film's irresistible Dulcinea: Sophia Loren, at her mature peak. (Her singing, alas, is not as ripe as her beautiful self.) If you love Cervantes for his earthy ironies, this movie will seem a curious slice of inspirational shtick. --Robert Horton

Description

Academy AwardÂ(r) winners* Peter O'toole and Sophia Loren are magnificent in this lavishlyproduced (LA Herald-Examiner) and beautifully acted (The New York Times) epic masterpiece. Featuring an OscarÂ(r)-nominated** score with the classic 'the Impossible Dream, this original and daring (Films & Filming) musical is an experience not to be missed! Jailed during the Spanish Inquisition for offending the church, author Miguel de Cervantes (O'toole) is forced to act out one of his manuscripts for the entertainment of fellow inmates. Cervantes delivers a rapturous performance as the legendary Don Quixote, the chivalrous knight whose choice to see lifeas it should be, not as it is, takes him into battles with an imaginary foe and into romance with the beautiful Dulcinea (Loren). *O'toole: Honorary Award (2002); Loren: Actress, Two Women (1961), Honorary Award (1990) **1972

4 out of 5 stars Triumph over unbeatable odds........2007-06-28

Peter O'Toole does an exceptional job playing Miguel de Cervantes who in turn plays the crazy Don Quixote de Lan Mancha in the version of a Broadway play brought to the screen. The DVD still has the feel of a Broadway musical in terms of sets and the movement of the actors across the stage.

Sophia Loren is exceptionally beautiful in this film though like O'Toole, her singing abilities are limited. James Coco does a respectable job as the realist Squire, Sancho Panza.

The continued assualts upon Sophia Loren by the gangs of criminals and thieves eventually got on my nerves. Whereas it created situations for highly choreographed musical numbers where Loren fights off attempted assailants, the assault of a woman by gang rapists is a difficult theme to choreography. I wish the assults were less emphasized since the viewer realizes this peasant woman survives as an waitress at a broken down Inn and services the male guests at night to survive.

The bleak Spanish countryside is realistically portrayed in the few non-set vistas in the film. Much of the film takes place in a set that is derived from the approach used in the stage production. The scrappy costumes also were well done.

The theme and story line however are the most compelling aspect of the film as we see a parable of triumph against unbeatable odds.

5 out of 5 stars The acting is what counts here..........2007-06-19

As a "Don Quixote" enthusiast, I have many recordings of the musical and, of course, had to own a DVD of the movie. I would say that the acting is what counts here. The outstanding Peter O'Toole is a very convincing and memorable Don Quixote, although it is a distraction when he lip-sincs thorough his songs (it's quite noticable). I still have to say, however, that the movie is outstanding in that the beautiful and sexy Sophie Loren is an appropriate Aldonza/Dulcinea. James Coco also brings the right essence to the role of Sancho.

I really enjoyed this movie and would like to see a remake for the new millinium that reflects the musical styles popular since the original movie (disco, rap, hip-hop). A Latin/Spanish version would also be quite appropriate as that kind of music and culture is becoming more a part of our American melting pot.

This wonderful score and it's profound message could surely withstand such variety of interpretation.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-06-14

It is truely replay the original script. The songs were sung not as good
as the New York Broadway one. I enjoy watching it. All the actors had done their excellent job to show each character.

5 out of 5 stars "I Really Like Him".......2007-05-27

To use the title of one of Sancho Panza's songs as the title to this should be indicative how I feel about this transaction! Excellent work and I apologize not sending this ion sooner, however I am a professional actor and am "out of town" playing Sancho Panza!!

5 out of 5 stars So much more than I imagined.......2007-05-15

I only remembered Man of la Mancha from the hazy VHS days when I was little girl. Watching this dvd was a great experience because there is so much more in the movie than I remembered or imagined. It's a great story based on reality. It's a classic and a great pre-cursor to reading Cervantes.

This 10-DVD boxed set is a delight for anyone afflicted with a susceptibility to the fractured antics of Jerry Lewis, or "Le Roi du Crazy" to the French. This set emphasizes Lewis's busy period after the breakup with Dean Martin, when he was exerting more influence over his vehicles (six of the titles are directed by Jerry himself) and almost single-handedly keeping Paramount Pictures propped up with his box-office take. The set curiously includes one of the Martin-Lewis pictures, 1953's The Stooge, which has echoes of the real-life vibe between Jerry and Dino.

The other titles include Lewis's 1957 solo starring debut, The Delicate Delinquent, and his directing bow, The Bellboy (1960). The latter is an often-ingenious and plotless collection of gags with Jerry as a bellhop in Miami Beach's Fountainebleau Hotel. His character doesn't speak (making the connection with silent cinema more pointed), but in one uproarious sequence the obnoxious movie star "Jerry Lewis" comes to visit the hotel.

The Ladies Man puts Lewis alone in a boarding house full of women. This film's bizarre sexual politics (and its amazing cut-away set) helps explain why French critics such as Jean-Luc Godard consider Lewis a cinematic genius--Godard actually borrowed the cut-away set idea for his film Tout va bien. The Errand Boy is a cascade of gags strung together on the set of "Paramutual Pictures," a movie studio that employs Lewis's klutzy gofer; it features one of Jerry's best musical miming routines. The Patsy is another good one, as nebbish Jerry is drafted into impersonating a famous deceased celebrity, but by 1965's The Family Jewels the inspiration is flagging a bit.

Two of the titles are directed by Lewis's mentor, Frank Tashlin. Cinderfella works a sentimental variation on the fairy tale; it's slow and at times mawkish, but some of Lewis's physical stuff is top-notch. The Disorderly Orderly is livelier, with a hospital setting and some of Jerry's most inspired babbling. The box also includes Lewis's acknowledged high point, The Nutty Professor, in its special-edition form. Its Jekyll-and-Hyde story is still the funniest and weirdest premise Lewis ever had. There are other Lewis films out there, but this box is definitely the cream of the career. If some of the jokes haven't aged well (and those who can't stand his mugging won't be convinced even by this set), Lewis still seems a more interesting filmmaker than he's usually given credit for. Extras include some disappointing commentaries with Lewis and Steve Lawrence, plus a smattering of outtakes, some of them funny and/or revealing of Lewis's directing technique. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars I'm a Sucker for All Things Silly.......2007-06-19

This box set is right up my alley. No, it's not perfect. I also wanted Who's Minding the Store, The Geisha Boy, and Visit to a Small Planet. But you can't have everything. I do like the clear picture and sound on these films. What a fun trip down memory lane.
I haven't had a chance to watch the film which includes Dean Martin. That's back-burner for me. So, as for Jerry's films themselves...

The Good -
The Nutty Professor has been called his best. I really love it. Just great stuff, smooth and funny and colorful. But I hate the Buddy Love character. Totally one dimensional, one of the most obnoxious jerks you'd ever meet, and too much makeup. However, this movie has some truly brilliant comedy before it adds some maudlin goop (a lot of Lewis' work tends to do this sometimes, so you have to roll with it). This is probably the height of his talents.

The Ladies Man is a lot of fun at Miss Welonmelon's boarding house, with some great bits: the butterflies, feeding Baby, the Southern gal's incomprehensible dialogue, fixing the gangster's hat, wiping Welonmelon's portait (that always makes me laugh out loud!), and the microphone problem while broadcasting 'Up Your Street'. There's a rather sudden ending, but this is one of my favorites in Jerry's career. Amazing set, too.

The Bellboy is very enjoyable, and extremely rewatchable because it has a lot going on, one thing after another. The lunch counter gag kills me. And you can't beat Jerry tampering with a clay bust that's still wet. Very good overall. And his character has virtually no dialogue.

The Fair -
The Errand Boy is a fairly good comedy, a typical vehicle for Jerry Lewis. Again, slipping into pathos and mush (with the puppets) seems completely out of place with the pace and feel of this movie, no matter how charming and sweetly executed. But the scene where Jerry butchers all the last names is hilarious.

The Disorderly Orderly is part slapstick and part depressing psychological study. Some wonderful comic bits cannot overcome the serious feel that the movie plays with in the pretty blonde patient who is so bitter, resentful to everyone, and very troubled. If you took out all the parts with her and then extended the slapstick, you'd have a better flick. Just my opinion.

The Family Jewels is cute, definitely a family film; I liked this more than I remembered. Which uncle will young Donna choose to raise her? Granted, you know the ending long before it happens, but I loved the part when Jerry as the pilot takes the old ladies on a trip. Silly, surreal, and fun. Only on a plane with Jerry does the in-flight film become affected by the angle that the plane is flying. And Jerry gets to don five silly disguises in this movie, Uncle Julius being the same character as the Nutty Professor.

The Bad -
The Patsy just doesn't do it for me; taking the same exact concept as The Errand Boy (bigwigs need a substitute immediately and grab the first idiot they see), this movie grows tedious rapidly. It is not as funny as we expect.

Cinderfella is a musical that I don't care for; although it is nice to look at and has a few nice moments, the completely glacial flow kills it. It is slow, dull, and talky. It's not funny. (And Ed Wynn looks like he just returned from a three day drunk in Vegas.) Maybe this would have been a better film if Jerry had written it and directed it. Sorry, but a big yawn.

I still have to watch The Delicate Delinquent, but so far I am pleased with this collection. The bottom line is that this set has a handful of terrific movies that you just don't see on television any longer. And the gems make up for the duds, definitely.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-03-08

The product was precisely what was ordered, but the back of the packaging had a gash in it that went through the plastic into the cardboard.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Lewis Rocks!.......2007-03-08

5 out of 5 stars Classic Laughs!.......2007-02-22

Great Praice for 10 classics and lots of laughs! If you are a Jerry fan, you will really enjoy these movies! (especally "Family Jewels", Priceless!)

4 out of 5 stars The Bellhop.......2007-02-20

This collection is a must for Jerry Lewis fans - a delightful return to the days when comedy was clean and presented by talented people.

Over the years, Tim Meadows has proven himself to be a very funny supporting player on Saturday Night Live, but he never really had a breakout character that he and Lorne Micheals could spin off into a movie--until now. Based on his lisping "Ladies Man" character, Meadows plays Leon Phelps, a late-night sex advice host of a radio show who gets fired for racking up one too many FCC fines. His producer (Karyn Parsons) gets fired with him, and she combs the Chicago stations looking for another gig while he tries to find the one old flame who would be willing to support him for the rest of his life. You see, Phelps is a sexaholic who tends to sleep with frustrated wives, much to the chagrin of the husbands who inevitably catch them in bed together. A mob of husbands have formed a group, under the leadership of Will Ferrell (playing a tired stereotype of the closeted homosexual), dedicated to hunting down Phelps and killing him. The embodiment of the '70s swinger, Phelps personifies both the good (sexual skills) and the bad (the wardrobe and fashion sense) of that icon, though the movie ends with your standard pro-family propaganda when he inevitably finds love and stability with his producer. The laughs do not come fast and furiously, sidetracked as they are by the so-called plot, but one thing must be said and said out loud: Billy Dee Williams is fantastic as the bartender-narrator. --Andy Spletzer

4 out of 5 stars Confused?.......2007-01-30

I've owned this film for a while, came across the reviews on Amazon, and thought I'd add my two cents. Many of you are probably confused by the WIDE range of star ratings. Most of us would probably agree that "SNL" films have less-than-stellar scripts, so a lot depends on the star and character. Some think that Will Ferrell is hilarious; others find him truly annoying. I think he's both. Molly Shannon does nothing for me, Adam Sandler is hit-and-miss, and Chris Farley reduces me to happy-tears every time, (though he did take part in some wretched movies.)

This one makes me laugh. A lot. It really shouldn't, because on paper it probably looks like a steaming heap of excrement, but if you like (no, make that LOVE... the film IS 90 minutes,) Tim Meadows and his Ladies Man character, then you could do worse than shell out ten bucks on it. Just make sure you watch it with friends who love the character too-- it really adds to the fun. You'll be talking with a lisp for weeks.

2 out of 5 stars another bad SNL movie.......2006-09-26

I liked Night at the Roxbury better than this. Of course that was a great movie though. So this is funny but do we ever get an actual story in any of these Lorne Michael's movies? Funny jokes are good but I just wish it was an actual movie and not a bad SNL skit. Highlights of the movie are the fake but still great looking Tiffany Amber Thiesen and Will Ferrel as the wrestler. Good movie to kill about 30 minutes or so on.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Movie.......2006-09-13

You should't expect to see a cineamatic masterpiece or anything close to it when you see "The Ladies Man." I'm sure the director thought this also. You should just expect to see a dumb movie that will make you laugh, causing you to repeat various lines from the film over and over with your friends.

2 out of 5 stars The Ladies Man should just be left as a skit on SNL.......2005-11-27

Tim Meadows (Mean Girls) stars at The Ladies Man, Leon Phelps, a radio love doctor who goes around seducing young fine ladies who have husbands. Meadows gets fired from a couple of radio jobs and soon he gets a letter from a woman who he cant remember her name but remembers the funkidelic sex that they had in the laundromat. So, Meadows goes back to the women he sexed it up with trying to figure out who this woman is. Meanwhile, the husbands of the wives Meadows sexed it up with formed a group so that they can track down Meadows and do harm to him. The group is lead by none other then Will Ferrell (Old School, Anchorman), who liked wrestling around with guys a lot...and I mean a lot. The husbands do a song and dance number that is so annoying, they burn Meadows love boat and try to track him down. In the end, its safe to say that this shouldnt of been made...there are some funny moments and Meadows is really funny and perfect for the role, but this needed to be left as a skit, not a feature length movie...this and Superstar. Also starring Billy Dee Williams (Empire Strikes Back, Batman), John Witherspoon (The Friday Trilogy), Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall), Mark McKinney (Kids in the Hall), Karyn Parsons (Major Payne), Jimmy Fallon (Taxi, Fever Pitch), Eugene Levy (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), Tiffani Amber Thiessen (Beverly Hills 90210, Fast Lane), Lee Evans (Fifth Element, Mouse Hunt, Ken Hudson Campbell (Down Periscope, Armegeddon) and Julianne Moore (The Forgotten, Hannibal).

5 out of 5 stars You Will Feel It In Da Butt.......2005-09-17

A True Classic. Many people don't like these SNL spin off movies, however, "The Ladies Man" really delievers. If you like "A Night at the Roxburry" then you will like this movie as well. Tim Meadows plays one of the most memoriable characters to ever come out of the storied show. All "Hillary" from "Fresh Prince" plays Meadow's love intrest in the movie as does Tiffani Amber Thieson (or however you spell her name). So with those 2 90s TV icons this movie is a no brainer.

Description

In THE LADIES MAN, Herbert H. Herbert (Lewis) has been dumped by his childhood sweetheart and has sworn off women. Then he unwittingly takes a job as a houseboy at an all-female boarding house. Surrounded by women, Herbert becomes the go-to guy who means well but does very little right.

1 out of 5 stars You gotta be kidding . . ........2007-07-03

How could anyone consider this funny? I enjoy (mildly) some Jerry Lewis movies. The Nutty Professor and The Big Mouth, to name a couple, get some chuckles and a few laughs out of me. But this thing--The Ladies Man--is horrible. Fancy sets and carefully staged pratfalls aren't what make a comedy funny.

5 out of 5 stars The skin of my back is caught in the crack of the door............2007-03-31

I loved Jerry Lewis movies as a kid, but naturally lost interest as I grew older and it seemed the movies simultaneously declined in quality while Jerry became increasingly annoying as a pontificating pseudo-intellectual. However his early work was interesting as he tried different things (silence in The Bellboy for example) and he made a couple of fine comedies early on. I have always found parts of It's Only Money and The Ladies Man hilarious. Many feel The Nutty Professor to be his best, and it has some good stuff, but I have always been partial to the all-out, anything-goes assault of gags in The Ladies Man, one of his best efforts. Also the shmaltz and sentimentality that marred so much of his later films is, for the most part, thankfully absent here.

Comedy, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and you cannot fake a laugh. You either find a non-sequiter throw-away joke like the bit with the door cited above funny, or you don't. Likewise many of the non-stop gag setups and deliveries here will crack you up or they won't. Of course it's silly. It was meant to be silly. Silly done well, is just fine.

There are some great bits here: the opening "heartbreak" scene (hilariously exaggerated); the butterflies; the other "pain" jokes (the toaster); "baby"; the dance with George Raft; the surreal encounter with Miss Cartilage; the "sound test" with Doodles Weaver; the intrusions into Mrs. Wellonmellon's TV show and so on. And if none of the above make you laugh, there is the one certified classic routine of the "hat bit" with Jerry Lester doing his patented "slow-burn".

Jerry made good use of the elaborate set and his direction here is as concise and appropriate as possible. As to the DVD, unfortunately, on the Commentary Jerry offers a few useful insights, but Steve Lawrence seems to be there just to say "Great Jer" after every bit. Egregious, but I suppose they don't watch many DVD's, and fail to understand what a Commentary is about. Take the 5 stars in context.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry's Character's Name.......2007-01-30

It occurred to me that Jerry's character in this classic 1961 film, "Herbert Heebert" may have been inspired by the 1931 gaff when radio personality Harry von Zell mispronounced President Herbert Hoover's name as "Hoobert Heever"....

4 out of 5 stars Cinematic Jerry.......2006-10-07

"The Ladies Man" (1961) survives as a dazzling vehicle for Jerry Lewis' filmmaking virtuosity. A decidedly thin premise (girl-shy Jerry unknowingly takes a job at an all-female boarding house) becomes a showcase for some of Lewis' most audacious camera work. The lavish interior set is a stunning creation and Jerry's cartoonish sight gags are among his best. Transferred from an excellent 35mm print, the DVD edition includes plenty of extras and a commentary track by Lewis and Steve Lawrence.

4 out of 5 stars What can i say....its jerry lewis...........2006-06-20

Here is another Jerry Lewis production that i have'nt seen for
a while, and it was another pleasant surprise....maybe not as
good as some but very viewable....hey what can i say...its Jerry!

Jerry Lewis, is a top performer that worked hard to make people
laugh. He was one of my heroes when i was young cause he put a
smile on everybody 's face... from the drive-ins and theatres
that i attended in the 60's....
I cant understand the portion of the population that really hates Jerry and dont think he's funny and cant act.....
But we all know, that most of us loves him, and we thank him
for his tremendous efforts through his life to make the kids
in us retain our youth and laugh.........
