This town drama from Ted Demme centers on former classmates coming together for their 10-year reunion. Scott Rosenberg's (Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead) script thoughtfully passes over the usual grumblings of young adults who can't believe they still live in the same snowbound town. They accept--even welcome--their blue-collar jobs, whether plowing snow or cutting hair. Willie (Timothy Hutton), the lone wanderer, returns to his listless house in a state of flux, the piano-bar circuit wearing thin as is his relationship with Tracy, a well-off attorney (Annabeth Gish). He isn't the only one with problems. Tommy (Matt Dillon) occasionally sleeps with his now-married high school sweetheart Darian (Lauren Holly) while the earnest Sharon (Mira Sorvino) is left to wait. Paul (another thickheaded role for Michael Rapaport) refuses to commit to Jan (Martha Plimpton) until it's too late. Paul is enamored with the idea of the supermodel (the title's "beautiful girls") that, he believes, can make life perfect. It's a very satisfying comedy, with some forced poignancy (Willie's description of Tracy as a "seven and a half" comes off as a death sentence). Rosie O'Donnell's dissertation on why Playboy and Penthouse have ruined males' expectations is much like Meg Ryan's orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally...: it's hilarious, even memorable, never wholly believable.
The two wild cards thrown into Beautiful Girls give the film its kick. Uma Thurman enters as the local barkeep's (Pruitt Taylor Vince) radiant cousin. From the big city, she can flirt with the awestruck guys and still keep her head. Willie's real emotional tug is from Marty, the precocious 13-year-old neighbor. If you didn't see Natalie Portman's sophisticated work in the The Professional, her performance here will come as a revelation. You deeply believe that Willie and Marty are connected despite their age difference. Their courtship will never come to be, but the way the two talk (and talk some more) about their lives is the most insightful part of Rosenberg's script. Everyone's so comfortable in his or her roles that you may truly feel sad when the film ends. --Doug Thomas
Description
An all-star cast sparks this captivating comedy about a group of old friends whose 10-year high school reunion creates some hilariously unexpected surprises. Willie (Timothy Hutton -- FRENCH KISS), Tommy (Matt Dillon -- TO DIE FOR), and Paul (Michael Rapaport -- MIGHTY APHRODITE) may have lost a bit of their youth, but they're still ready to party with Uma Thurman (PULP FICTION), Rosie O'Donnell (TV's THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW), Lauren Holly (DUMB AND DUMBER), and Mira Sorvino (AT FIRST SIGHT) -- the "beautiful girls" who've turned their lives upside down! Also featuring a hot soundtrack, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS is a must-see comic delight that's sure to entertain you!
Customer Reviews:
A comical and insightful jaunt.......2007-04-15
Beautiful Girls is a very light-hearted comedy about a small town class reunion. It does hover dangerously close to some dark, abstract notions that frequently threaten the overall good vibes. That makes the movie entertaining and realistic. Luckily it teeters on the positive side and never falters at any point.
It's directed by Ted Demme(Blow)and it won a CEC award for Best Screenplay. Its completely filled with clever dialogue. At times it might seem a little glib, but it covers its tracks with responses from it's characters, like when one says "you stay awake nights thinking up this (stuff)".
Many of the characters do fall into stereotypes, but this is inconsequential because it doesn't feel forced. Everyone has their odd little quirks that make them unusual and interesting.
Matt Dillon is great in a typecast role as the kinda shady womanizer. Michael Rappaport is awesome as his annoying buddy. Timothy Hutton is the one guy who realizes he doesn't need a drastic change. And a young Natalie Portman steals the show as the "little neighborhood Lolita".
There are many scenes with buddies drinking, saying stupid stuff, drooling over beautiful girls. Almost all the guy's dreams seem somewhat quixotic.
I think this is one of the most underrated comedies ever. I always feel better after watching it.
Willie C! Stay cool! Stay cool forever.......2007-04-11
One of the best and a collectible & worth watching the movie for just this part
"Supermodels are beautiful girls, Will. A beautiful girl can make you dizzy, like you've been drinking Jack and Coke all morning. Se can make you feel high with the single greatest commodity known to man--promise. Promise of a better day. Promise of a greater hope. Promise of a new tomorrow. This particular aura can be found in the gaze of a beautiful girl. In her smile, in her soul, how she makes every rotten little thing about life seem like it's going to be okay. The supermodels are bottled promise. A beautiful girl is all powerful, and that's as good as love"
This movie is just ok...........2007-02-01
Frankly, I bought this DVD only because Natalie Portman is in it. The movie has this prevailing forced quality to it: Ms.Portman's performance is good, but seeems forced(=unconvincing as 13 year old) The same goes for Uma Thurman(watch the dancing scean with Paul). The jokes and dialogues are funny, yet not really fresh even thouth it's not recycled materials. I think this is the director Ted Demme's first ensemble cast movie, and it kinda shows.
I beg to differ (a little).......2006-11-15
This is a fine film. The characters are older young adults, barely young enough to be able to characterize this as a "rite-of-passage" film. I disagree with those who suggest that the characters ultimately give up on the dreams of their youth and "settle" for an inevitable and dull adulthood. From my 58 year old vantage point, they are leaving their shallow and immature adolescence for the deeper and more meaningful commitments to mature, real (not mythologized) partners who love them for who they are. They are ready to embrace their lives both present and future and let go of the ever more distant and irrelevant past.
The Hutton character is certainly tempted by Thurman. Though he admires and cares for the 13 yr old Portman character, he is always aware that her desire for him will not be returned by him. He relates to her impatience to grow up, recognizes her puppylove feelings for him, but never considers abusing her affection for him.
This is a wonderful ensemble cast. Though more polished than its predecessor, this film reminds me of the early John Sayles film "Return Of The Secaucus Seven".
Willie and Marty.......2006-10-08
This movie is about the growing relationship between a surprised, smitten Willie and beautiful girl Marty. It's all we care about. Everything else is window dressing to these two.

if you thought go-fish was bad.......2006-01-21
well then you haven't seen this!!! I saw this in a crowded art theater with quite a few other lesbians present. At one point the two main characters begin a dialogue about how they love each other. Trite enough in itself. Then one says to the other, "Well actually I don't always love you in fact sometimes I don't even like you." When finally my film going companion had enough and yelled out, "Well, I hate you both!" bringing the house down in a roar of laughter. She pretty much summed up my feeling. I hate this film. If you like bad movies and like to laugh at how stupid everyone can be then definitely watch this. Although it lacks the wonderful camp of showgirls. Which is another terrible film but at least its good-bad ya know? For a decent lesbian film When Night is Falling comes to mind or Bound for that matter.
Kinda cheesy, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2005-02-11
"Bar Girls" is an enjoyable little romantic comedy about an obsessive, incredibly funny cartoonist, Loretta, who is continually looking for that perfect significant other. When she actually finds her, she thinks it's too perfect and all her neurotic, but hilarious, self-sabotage tendencies kick in. Clever dialogue between Loretta and her best friend, tension-filled moments between Loretta and the film's stereotypical "bad girl", as well as tender moments of self-awareness make up for the film's obviously lacking depth. The intermittent scenes of Loretta's cartoon and the cartoon's heroine are hilarious! In all, "Bar Girls" is kinda cheesy, but an enjoyable 90-minutes nonetheless.
Glad I didn't buy it.......2004-08-05
I had thought about buying this DVD for a long time then it appeared on The Movie Channel, so I could see it for free. I almost couldn't stand to watch it even then. The acting is terrible and the situations between the women are even worse. I don't know why any of these characters would be considered attractive to anyone. If this is what is being used to represent lesbian culture, we're in worse shape than ever. Don't buy this. In fact, don't watch it.....even for free. Too bad I couldn't give it zero stars.
What I want to know is..........2004-08-02
what happened to the gorgeous, husky-voiced, luscious, deliciously dykey Camila Griggs who plays the agressive cop J.R. Now, she is hot. My "ultimate dream girl" fantasy to quote her character in the movie. You could cast her as the Xena uber in any of those fan inspired novels with no leap of imagination whatsoever. Someone should've starred her in her own lesbian indie. The woman has got to have a following. It was great to see a strong, totally believable (and very attractive) amazon gay woman portrayed for a change.
avoid it!.......2004-04-18
I was terribly disappointed by this film. The sound, screenplay, acting and direction are all terrible. Everything about it just screams low budget. It has the quality of a home video created in someone's basement. This is a film to avoid!

These girls Rock!.......2006-11-19
This sexual comedy, that right anything that brings a smile to yours and friend's faces is a comedy and this video does just that. I wish all the girls in the video as much happiness as this video bring to the world. It's nice to see real girls show they can really have a good time. Buy 1 and 2 first their better and then 3 and 4 of the best of. Hopefully with the V-chip in TV's this kind of comedy will be on Public TV, lifes to short not to hope.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, NEVER BUY FROM GGW!.......2006-04-22
I bought a set of GGW videos a few months ago and I COMPLETELY regret it. This is the worst purchasing experience I've ever had. Many people have complained about the horrible customer service at GGW. In my case, I paid extra on my order for speedy delivery. The charge went against my credit card, so they got immediate payment from me. My videos were supposed to have been delivered within a couple days, but it wound up taking a couple MONTHS instead! And only after I complained did they finally deliver them. But they still didn't reimburse me for the extra expense I had paid for the speedy delivery that never happened. And if that isn't bad enough, for the last month these jerks have been calling me every day, several times a day. I get calls at home, I get calls at work. They called me three times just today. This is harrassment! I'm right now researching what my legal options are because their incessant phone calls are making me crazy. Can you imagine having to explain unsolicited calls you're receiving at work from GGW? Unless you want to go through the hell I'm being put through, do yourself a favor and please avoid these sorry jerks!

The Total Entertainment! .......2006-11-19
This Video is not soft-core or hardcore porn it's a new kind of comedy. These girls show a good sense of humor when it comes to nudity that what make this video great. Girls Gone Wild keeps finding these happy go luck girls and I keep buying, especially your other series like Mardi Gras and Spring Break.
Only one i kept.......2006-04-27
Out of this series this Vol. is the only one that was over the top and i kept, the others were more than just flashing boobs but still weren't enough for a veteran GGW collector like me to keep, i know there are alot of them out there and alot better one so i am a member off GGW and i can review them, send them back if i don't like them and review others.

Constant flashing at clubs.......2004-09-01
The "Girls Gone Wild" bus goes on tour looking for girls to flash their T&A. They mostly go to various clubs (bars...dance clubs) to find girls that are willing to pull up their top and show their stuff, or flash their thong, etc. You get your money's worth, I liked it. It's typical "Girls Gone Wild" stuff...find girls, ask them to flash to get a free T-shirt, and enjoy seeing the girls naked. I already bought Volumes I and II, and they were good, so now I will also buy Volumes III and IV.
I've seen some "Girls Gone Wild" movies that are better than this one, so I almost rated this movie 4 stars, but compared with what else is available from other companies, its still 5 stars.
