Justice (Jackie Gleason as the maniac "Smokey" of the title). The stakes get higher and the car chases more frenzied in this hysterical romp through the American highways. It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

Just on the Nostalgia value alone.......2007-05-31

I had forgotten how much fun the late 70's were. After seeing this on CMT and other channels a few times, my feeling was that "this sucks just as bad as I remember". But after seeing it on DVD in its entirety without commercial interruption(ha), the pacing and flow of the movie seems to stand up well, even though if you made this film today, it would only run 38 minutes, because all the car chase scenes would be edited in milliseconds. Not a bad period piece from 197X, at all.

A fun movie even with the errors........2007-03-20

I saw this movie when it first came to the theater. No such thing as video back then. This movie set off the Firebird craze and furthered the CB craze. It is a fun movie in spite of the 50+ obvious continuity errors in it. Some of the really obvious errors range from evidence of previous takes of a scenes (Tire marks on the pavement) to watching a Firebird accelerating as if it has a 4 speed transmission only later to see an automatic transmission gear shift, to watching the order of other prop cars change. Even when "Frog" has her feet out the window while going down the road in the next shot, where her head is on the console, the transmission shifter is in neutral.

Get the movie and watch it. Its fun in spite of the errors.

Classic but you know there will be a remake... .......2007-03-18

After "The Longest Yard" was remade, it's only a matter of time until they redo this one and update it,with Burt, Jerry and Sally? or "Bandit: the Early Years?".

Funny, GREAT chase film, well-filmed and edited. The film holds up even if there are some dated references. Language is kind of on the rough side but nothing too bad. Cartman quotes from this film on "South Park".

Pontiac and Coors would be nothing without this film.

They should never have done the sequels... although Cannonball Run II might've been the one to avoid.

Bandit Fan.......2007-05-18

I grew up with Smokey and the Bandit. Parents showed it to me along time ago. Always appealed to me for some reason. I love the First one. Never gets old. The second one is likeable. I didn't like the fact that the trailer was blue with the Bandit picture stuck on. The black rig and trailer were gone. The Third one I haven't even finished and I don't think I have ever seen it all the way through. But I wanted the set so this was the way to go. I like jerry's music and there is plenty of it in these movies.

Smokey and the bandit. Well we find this a great family movie, it has some comedy and is a fun action type movie. But the best thing about this movie is that there is NO bad Language which is great making it a really good family show.

While HD-DVD is awesome, this movie is not. :) I remember seeing his when I was a kid and just had to get it. Movie is o.k., but I didn't get as big a kick out of it as I did when I was younger.

Picture is very good for a 30? year old movie. Sound is good but very front heavy. Did they even have surround back then?

Smokey Looks Awesome in HD.......2007-06-04

Smokey and the Bandit has never looked better since 1977 when it was shown on the big screen. The HD transfer is excellent and this disc comes with nice bonus features including a "Making of" segment in which Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham talk about the making of the film. This movie is just plain for the whole family. Relive the action all over again.

What a dud........2007-01-04

Sally fields is older than the hills and looks every bit of it.One minute Burts in a swamp the next he's in the Utah desert.Guess what there is no desert between Dallas and Florida.This one was a real turd. I really liked the part where the football player flips a 4000 lbs car with one arm. Sheesh, better suited for kids but somewhat racy with the language.

The first movie is great and the second movie is still really good. The first movie had more moments of jackie gleason being frustrated.Plus burt reynolds displayed more laughs in the first movie.It is so funny at the beginning of bandit 1 when enus burdett and his partner walk up to burt reynolds sleeping in a hammock,and burt raises his cap and laughs.Burt's laugh sounds funny. By the way i liked bandit 1 so much that i cut football practice back in 1980 to go see bandit 2.

Sheesh, they were really reachin' with this follow-up. As if Dom DeLuise's ridiculous Italian accent wasn't silly enough, the pregnant elephant shenanigans were downright ludicrous. I also got treated to seein' Sheriff Justice and his two brothers (both played by Jackie Gleason) in action, hammin' it up for all they're worth in the relatively brief appearances they made here. In fact, I'm pretty the whole playing-three-roles deal was what got Gleason to sign up for this go-'round. The producers knew he had a hankerin' to show off his comedic acting "range", and they found just the hook to appeal to his ego, and reeled him right on in...

On the upside, the climactic army-of-patrol-cars-versus-an-army-of-big-rigs featured a slew of dumb-yet-amusing wrecks and smash-ups. Also entertaining was the moment where the film's plausibility was stretched to its breaking point: the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) has a little conversation with former Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw... and Bradshaw is clearly sporting a full head of hair! Which is something he hasn't sported since he came into the NFL...
