If you think that the only thing impish Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) lacks is a lilting Irish accent, this movie is for you. In About Adam Hudson plays Lucy, the youngest daughter of a middle-class Irish family, who thinks she's found the perfect guy. Adam (Stuart Townsend) not only brings flowers and takes her on romantic getaways, he even gets along with her family. Just at the moment when the sweetness of their romance seems intolerable, it turns out that he's also been romancing Lucy's sister Laura (Frances O'Connor from Mansfield Park and A.I.), for whom he's constructed an entirely different personality. And this is only the first of a series of secrets unveiled and eventually uncovered by the third sister, Alice (Charlotte Bradley). The story of About Adam isn't particularly believable, but its entertaining exploration of desire and self-delusion rings true. --Bret Fetzer

The thing about Ben's folks is that, after four decades, they're breaking up. It starts when Sam (Peter Falk) finds a letter from Muriel (Olympia Dukakis). She's gone off to find herself, he tells Ben (writer/producer Paul Reiser, Mad About You) and daughter-in-law Rachel (Elizabeth Perkins). He isn't as upset as he is confused. Mostly, he thinks it's just a misunderstanding. Ben and Rachel offer to let him stay with them, so he starts spending all his time with his son. Sam doesn't have anything else to do and Ben, a freelance writer, can't bring himself to say no. Meanwhile, Ben's older sisters put their heads together to determine where their mother has gone and to make sure she's all right. After a bumpy start, Ben and Sam bond while on a road trip through upstate New York. The Thing About My Folks is sensitively acted by a talented cast and appears to have been made with love (Reiser wrote the part of Sam specifically for Falk). It elicits a few laughs and even a few tears, but the language is unnecessarily profane--no one would confuse the Kleinmans for the Sopranos--and the humor can be a little crass--for a film aimed at adults, gags about flatulence seem ill-advised. Still, Reiser's heart is in the right place. Sometimes that can be enough, although Raymond De Felitta's previous film, Two Family House, is a more original look at the complexities of family life. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
The Thing About My Folks is a heart warming tale of family bonds and enduring love. After 47 years of marriage, Ben's (Reiser) mother unexpectedly leaves her husband. With no where else to turn, Ben's father Sam (Falk) is forced to spend time and get to know his son. Hysterical antics ensue as Ben and Sam strengthen their father/son relationship while Ben helps his father rekindle the romance with his mother.

Sunshine.......2007-05-08
We saw the movie and it was great - this was a gift and they loved it!!!
A Beautiful Story.......2007-03-15
I thought this was a great story, it was one the whole family can and should watch together. It was a real story, it makes you realize how short and beautiful life is and the acting was from the heart, a classic...
Apples and Oranges.......2007-01-22
Paul Reiser steps away from the standup comedy spotlight to write a warmly humorous and gently tender story about family - what we see and what we don't see, what we expect and what surprises us. THE THING ABOUT MY FOLKS doesn't set any new standards for film, but it is a fine little story well told that reminds us about the significant bonds that family represents.
Sam Kleinman (Peter Falk) has been a workaholic, at times pushing his wife Muriel (Olympia Dukakis), his daughters (Mackenzie Connolly and Lydia Jordan), and his son Ben (Paul Reiser) into the background. One day Muriel leaves a note that after years of marriage she is leaving! Her daughters, along with Ben's wife Rachel (Elizabeth Perkins) immediately begin the search for her whereabouts, leaving the confused and hurt and disgruntle Sam to sort things out on a road trip with son Ben. The road trip becomes a time for the two men to learn who each other is and what they each mean to their status as father and son and as family members. Sam relaxes for the first time in his life and introduces the now workaholic Ben to the pleasures and fun of living. The trip comes to an end with a phone call about the whereabouts of Muriel and why she left and the regrouping of the wiser family draws the story's warm ending. All is not what it seemed: it's better and, well, different.
Falk and Reiser play off each other like the pros they are, but in many ways the film belongs to the brief moments when Olympia Dukakis is on screen, reminding us that she is one of our strongest matriarchs on film.
Well worth viewing. Grady Harp, January 07
Peter Falk movie.......2007-01-04
Falk is hilarious in this moving tale about marriage and family life. I just adore his style. He never disappoints me......he will always be my dreamboat!! See this movie.
Father And Son Bonding--A Slight And Unassuming Little Film For Those Who Like that Sort Of Thing.......2006-11-14
"The Thing About My Folks" is a pleasant, if not at all surprising, little diversion. In a bit of male wish fulfillment, a man and his father find themselves on an unlikely roadtrip--and thus have the time to learn about one another and bond in ways previously foreign to them both. This seriocomic adventure stars Paul Reiser and Peter Falk as the duo, and the piece was obviously put together as an ode to familial love. What little boy doesn't yearn to spend more time with his dad? Apparently, even into adulthood, that's not something you ever get over.
After a fairly contrived and perfunctory beginning, our guys get on the road. Their escapades are pleasingly familiar which means that we're treated to a lot of cliche'd moments. As you might expect--we get ballgames, camping, fishing, drinking, smoking, carousing with women, and any other father/son interaction you might hope for. It's all very tame, though, but there is a warm humor to be had throughout. Naturally, they grow closer and there are some sweet (and completely expected) moments.
There is nothing particularly wrong with "The Thing About My Folks"--it's just so safe and unassuming. I suspect many will be attracted to it's comfortable feeling and experience a tugging sensation on their heartstrings. It has the feel of a good Cable TV movie, and never strives to be anything other than pleasant. In that it succeeds, it's pleasant. It is good to see Falk back in a leading role, and he makes the most of it. It's a very likable performance.
People who like the "warm and fuzzies" should like this film--but if it sounds like it's not your type of film, it probably isn't. KGHarris, 11/06.

YOU CAN'T ALWAYS RUN!.......2007-06-27
I'M GOING TO KEEP IT SHORT AND SIMPLE. THE MOVIE WAS GREAT! THE CAST RENEE GOLDSBERRY AND TERRON BROOKS WAS THE PERFECT COUPLE. I JUST LOVED HIS VOICE ON EVERY SONG. AFTER EACH PERFORMANCE TERRON PERFORM I REPEAT THE DVD SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I GO ON TO FINISH THE FILM. ALSO THE SONG CALLED SUPRISE. IT MAKES ME CRY, I REWIND THAT PART OF THE MOVIE ABOUT 5X WHEN I WATCH IT.
AND SUPRISE AS WE RISE, AS WE LIGHT THE SKY AS WE'RE FALLING. THROUGH THE AIR WITH NO CARE AND GROUND BELOW, CAUSE WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW.
SUPRISE!!!
THE MOVIE IS A MUST SEE, IF YOU LOVE LOVE STORIES..

All About You.......2006-08-08
I absolutely loved this movie!! I have watched it about twenty times. When I want to watch a good clean movie, a love story between a man and a woman, I pop in "All About You." I applaud Christine Swanson and the Actors who gave her masterpiece life.
I Don't Deserve This Kind of Treatment.......2006-07-03
This is a good movie. I have watched it over and over again. There is a very strong message in it. This girl was in a relationship with this guy for about a year; she cared very deeply for him but he didn't feel the same. At his birthday party, that she prepared for him, she found out that he only thought of himself as far as the future which was not with her. I don't want to tell the movie but for me, it was an excellent movie with a very strong storyline especially for young ladies who put their lives on hold waiting for someone who does not have them on the mind for a future in marriage. You are important, don't allow yourselves to be used by someone who does not think of you as a "wife". This guy was on the rebound from his previous girlfriend who decided not to marry him. So, while getting into a relationship with Nikki, he still had feelings for the other girl and was waiting to see if she would take him back. You really need to see this movie. "great".

Adam, it seems, has a BIG problem ..........2007-06-10
... he can't seem to keep his zipper up! Now in real life, this would be a problem. But in the movies, this sort of thing can be very funny, for a person with an open mind such as myself. Adam shags basically anyone with 2 legs - dudes are not excluded. Stuart Townsend smiles, smirks, grins, his way through this entire movie, looking like he's having the time of his life while doing so. We find out at the end of the movie why he is the way he is. His simple statement of fact: "It just makes me happy to make other people happy". Hey, I'm all for that, and though I wouldn't go around humping people to prove my point, I'm all for helping my fellow man :)
I really liked this movie, a friend recommended it to me, and I'm glad she did. I think it is very good, I'm not sure I would call it excellent, but I did enjoy it very much, and was worth the price to buy & own.
About Adam.......2006-10-30
I purchased this movie before I had ever seen it only because it starred Stewart Townsend, because every time I watch him as Lestat in Queen of the Damned I wish it was my neck he was sucking... I had high hopes for this movie because of Stewart and Kate Hudson, but it was not exactly what I expected. It was not a horrible movie, but it made me look at my sisters relationships with my other half in a whole new light! It is an okay pick for a Sunday night flick, but I have only watched it once if that tells you anything.
There is no snake in this Garden of Eden !.......2006-08-13
How can we be a perfect catholic in the days of contraception ? One way, and only one : share and share and share again, and then love and love and love again, in three words « share your love ». The man, lover and future husband of one sister is to be shared in mutual ignorance and perfect communion with the two other sisters, a little bit with the brother, and even a little bit more with the brother's would-be girlfriend and even a little tiny bit more or less with the mother of them all. It's a comedy but it is not at all hilarious, just comfortable, cosy and even kind of quaint, quaint like in Boccaccio or Chaucer. The best part of this film is that it is absolutely and deeply sexy and yet you will not see one breast, you will not even see the shape of any sexual attribute, you will hardly see any skin, and yet you will be moved in the deepest depth of your sensual excitement and excitation, in one word you will irresistibly desire and want and wish to meet that Adam and have a conversation with him, no matter what, and let fate and destiny and predestination decide whatever may happen later on. Be sure you will be absolutely flawless afterward because all that will feel, taste and sound absolutely pure, virginal and pristinely chaste, even and especially if it is nothing but exactly the reverse, in your mind, in your bed, or his, and even in your lingerie, or shall we say skin-clothing. This feeling is probably the best feeling such a light and superficial film can nurture in you. At least it is good for your general balance : you feel as if you were floating - mentally, spiritually and metaphorically - in the boat of your mother's uterus again.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University of Paris Dauphine & University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne
Pleasant Surprise.......2006-08-12
I normally shy away from films where the characters use a fake accent (not cameo's, such as John Malkovich's riveting Russian accent in "Rounders"), but Kate Hudson did a good job with her accent in this one. She and Frances O'Connor, you could tell they both took the accent seriously and didn't just wing it. I thought everyone did a good job, including Stuart Townsend and there were a couple of scenes that I actually laughed out loud at. The filming was Pulp Fictionesque and provided some insight and surprises. Cool Jag, too.
Top Rate Movie.......2006-08-12
The saying goes: "there's always more than one side to the story".
Kate Hudson plays Lucy Owens a cute, vivacious waitress who catches the admiration of Adam (Stuart Townsend). Adam seems like the perfect man, and though at first reluctant to commit, Lucy soon has to face up to her growing attraction to Adam. Everything seems perfect - at least from her point of view. But Adam is a man who knows exactly what women want. And he likes giving it to them - and not just one woman, all women. Using a mixture of empathy, friendliness and seductiveness Adam quickly brings both of Lucy's sisters under his sway. But is it really such a bad thing? The sister's are happier than they have ever been - with Adam's influence extending past him and into their everyday lives - Lucy is marrying the "perfect" man and Adam is reveling in his new won family. Should the sister's tell Lucy what is happening? Or is everything just the way it should be?
I have yet to meet a married woman who likes this movie; they all seem to take a personal offense to it. But as a single gal, I have to admit, this is one of my favorite movies. The story line is well written and humorous, the dialog is witty and intelligent. A nice change from the "cookie cuter" movies most people are producing.

Customer Reviews:
A typical Affleck heart string yanker!.......2007-03-13
Affleck seems to be in just about every film under the sun nowadays. I felt like this show was somewhat similar to the film "Bounce" that he co-starred in with Gwyneth Paltrow. This film tries showing a go getter in a corporate environment whose life is falling apart around him. Rebecca Romjin co-stars as his wife Nina, and her character adds a lot to the drama, which also includes a journal belonging to Jack (Affleck) being stolen and used against him. Many great actors and this story was somewhat interesting, but in the end it is just one of those campy films you could enjoy on a Sunday afternoon.
Is this movie trying to be funny or moving?.......2007-03-03
Is a meaningful movie possible that tries to be both at the same time? After watching this you will only feel what a stupid movie because it self destroys any seriousness.
a pretty good one ruined by a ridiculous scenario.......2006-12-31
it's a shame to see a screenplay simply ruined by a ridiculous insertion that ruined ben afleck's good performance. since when writing a diary or journal would become such a big fuss? to arrange a bad actress, bai ling, focused at, circled around, and concentrated on her plot to ruin the hottest talent agent in town is the worst scenario i've ever seen. if the screenplay writers have the least logic training, they should know that the adulterous betrayal of the talent agent's wife and his silent suffering devastation would be more than enough to touch viewers' hearts. the beginning and the ending parts were good, but the plot and the scenes of chinese restaurant negotiations, chasings by a chinese kitchen clan was so ridiculous and stupid, so stupid that beyond any word that i could describe.
ben afleck did a quite good job even in this lousy screenplay. as to his father's part and the whole chinese rip-off scenario, both should be omitted and rewritten before putting into production.

Kieslowski collection . . ........2005-12-31
A dirty Warsaw frames A Short Film About Killing, symbolizing a society in decay. Murder . . . both state sanctioned and random are shown in counterpoint. The film is a powerful indictment about the death penalty, and the barrister reflects the outrage of the heart. The second theme is random chance . . . if only the killer's sister hadn't been killed, if only he had a good friend to talk to, if only someone had intervened. The film is so hard to watch because it reflects the mirror back at our souls.
Voyeurism, love and loneliness mingle in A Short Film About Love. Love, the special world, cannot be approached directly, but only tangentially . . . in the film's case, through the lens. Where Tomek begins as an impassioned voyeur, his love interest takes over as the film progresses. Do we only need a fleeting glimpse to arrive at love? How do we escape from being alone in the world? Such universal question are asked(and answered) in this expanded film version of The Dialogue classic.
Blind Chance is fantastic. Absolutely great. The themes of free choice and predetermination are explored not as opposites but as two qualities somehow blended together. When we think, "ah, I can choose," are we correct, or does each cosmic choice imply similar outcomes, similar problems? If we have three choices, are they really so different? Is the bad choice so bad? On the extra selections, check out the fascinating interview with his film censor, whom he respected so much she became a sort of creative sounding board for his works in progress, while at the same time examining his work in her `official capacity.'
No End is obviously a precursor to Blue . . . where the dead(sometimes literally, sometimes metaphorically)live on, influencing events. There is no Black and White in Kieslowski's films, only gradations. Like Blind Chance, each position/argument on how to handle the case of the prisoner has their pro and con side. Truth or the true side of the prisoner is expressed by the deceased lawyer, revealed through his writings. Check out the short documentary The Office on the extras portion of the disc. It has comedy, wit, grace and tragedy(all in five minutes). It takes place in the black hole of an official state office where some hack drones on in a staccato tone to desperate pleas from several claimants. In this short(shot in film school), one can see the shape and scope of Kieslowski's future films.
On the extras of Camera Buff, Kieslowski's short documentary Talking Heads shows the humanity and hopes of ordinary people, and also of the filmmaker Kieslowski himself. Camera Buff works on several levels. First, it's laugh-out-loud funny(in parts). Second, it raises questions of putting somebody in the spotlight . . . and its implications. Like the dwarf worker or the communist functionary who loses his job. I see implications in news stories everyday . . . the power of turning the camera on ourself. This is Kieslowski's first "breakthrough film," and, perhaps it is here that Kieslowski first all incorporates all of the parts in the sum in combination making Kieslowski a singular genius. No other filmmaker or artist of any kind examines life in this manner, turning the camera inward.
Some of the best movies I have ever watched.......2005-12-10
Each movie of the collection is a masterpiece, a refreshing experience, leaving a deep, intense after-taste. Do not miss them !
Bravississimo! .......2005-08-31
SO FAR THE DVD EVENT OF THE DECADE!
No need to heap more praise upon Kieslowski, one of the greatest masters behind the camera. Just wanted to uncork a flood of this for this nothing short of phenomenal DVD set harvested by the "Kino video" film thoroughbreds! Each of these DVD titles has features aplenty to consider the entire edition a cultural event of the first water ---Kieslowski' rare shorter footage films are added on each of the titles; each title includes interviews with closest associates, friends, critics etc. It seems like that even the critics got inspired -being awara that they are paying tribute to a master that stand on equal footing to a Tarkovski, Fellini or Kurosawa to name but the cream of the crop.
All DVD's from the set are rented relentlessly, around the clock, at least in the video store I frequent. It makesone joyous to see that there's so many film fans hungry for the REAL THING (as opposed to the abominable, unmentionable, ever worse and more offensive Hollywood drek ;-)

An excellent and balanced overview of Iraqi popular opinion.......2005-11-17
This is an excellent documentary which samples opinions from many Iraqis of different social, economic, and educational levels regarding the American occupation and the ousting of Saddam Hussein. If you want to hear Iraqis who welcome the US soldiers as saviors, as well as those who believe they're occupying agressors who are only after oil, that's all here-- as well as opinions of every shade in between.
More significantly, seeing the different people in their own environment, speaking their own language and interacting both with the interviewers and with one another, gives an excellent and often-absent context for these opinions. At the same time, seeing all the opinions together and in context, makes it clear to the viewer not only that there is more complexity of opinion than the normal sound-bites allow for, but also helps the viewer to understand how even within one country, different people with different backgrounds and interests, can have radically divergent opinions on this subject.
Incidentally, the fact that the interviewees are translated by means of subtitles, rather than dubbing, makes this an excellent resource for students of Arabic and Iraqi. Most of the interviewees speak in Iraqi dialect, although the more educated ones speak in standard Arabic or English. (Interestly enough, the more education Iraqis who speak in English and foojha tend to be much more anti-American than the more common Iraqis, which was a surprise to me, personally.)
All in all, an excellent documentary.

Customer Reviews:
Everbody has very interesting secrets..........2006-07-15
A great film with a very interesting plot. The good points are: A very talented (not to mention great looking) cast, solid laughs, a non-silly witty script, fantastically written characters, and the film has a nice look to it. Why only 4 stars you ask? Well at first glance, the films plot seems ever changing and intricate, which it is, but if you truly think about what is going on by the end, nothing like this would ever be possible in real life. Also, the first ending is a little weak, but lucky for it there is a second ending that saves the film.
About Choi Su Hyeon.......2006-07-02
A remake of the original movie, "About Adam." However, its a bit different from the original. Being that its a Korean movie, the topic of sex is taboo throughout this film, which makes it even MORE funnier, but less sexual than the original. Not a bad job on remaking "About Adam" for a Korean comedy film. An entertaining film.
