Pop star Frankie Avalon and former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello inaugurated the beach movie proper (after Gidget tested the waters) with this celebration of surf, sand, rock & roll music, and, of course, sex. Frankie carries Annette (named Doris in the film) over the threshold of a beach cabin as she whispers "It's just like we're married." "Exactly!" he smiles before tripping over a dozen friends camping out on the floor. Well, not quite, as it turns out in the boys-against-girls contest of one-upmanship and jealous tantrums. Frankie woos the pneumatic Scandinavian Eva Six and Annette flirts with frumpy anthropologist Bob Cummings (wearing a beard that would scare Grizzly Adams). Meanwhile he secretly studies the mating rituals of the beach tribe with his eternally frustrated assistant Dorothy Malone. Harvey Lembeck (from Stalag 17) is the aging juvenile delinquent Eric von Zipper, a spastic motorcycle gang leader, while Morey Amsterdam recites silly beat poetry in a Chinese mask and surf rocker Dick Dale plays bongos and wears a gold earring. Look for bit parts by Beach Boy Brian Wilson (as a surfer) and Peter Falk (as a biker) and a cameo by Vincent Price. This first beach romp is about as sophisticated as a Keystone Kops farce (it ends with a slapstick free-for-all that wouldn't be out place in the silent era), but it's dumb, fluffy fun with lots of hunky boys and pretty bikinied girls shaking their booties and making out. --Sean Axmaker

It's not too surprising that Shag flopped on its 1989 release but found a devoted cult following on cable TV and home video. This featherweight comedy looked like a waste of space on the big screen, but it plays very cozily on the tube, where it lends itself to popcorn breaks and pajama parties. (The lousy title must have had something to do with the movie's initial failure, a problem worsened by the film being marketed as Shag: The Movie, a truly dumb idea.) Shag is in the tradition of Spring Break pictures, a thoroughly formulaic stroll through the conventions of the minigenre: beachside romance, a wild party, one tender deflowering, and lots of rock & roll. The time is 1963, as three gal friends trick their soon-to-be-married pal (Phoebe Cates) into one final all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged to a local well-bred stick (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's tempted by a beach boy (Robert Rusler) bound for Yale (mm-hmm). The so-so material is buoyed by lovely Annabeth Gish, as the supposedly pudgy one in the group, and Bridget Fonda, as a prematurely sophisticated sexpot. After a while it's easy enough to relax and enjoy the girls' breezy adventures, which are served up without the soap opera melodrama of the similarly tooled Where the Boys Are. Oh, and Austin Powers notwithstanding, the title refers to the dance, not something else. --Robert Horton

Description

What do you get when you mix T-Birds, Bermuda shorts, bubble-flip dos and incredible dancing? You get Shag, The Movie a comic free-for-all (The New York Times) that Variety calls fun and breezy and you'll call a blast! Carson (Phoebe Cates, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) is all set to marry respectable but boring Harley (Tyrone Power, Jr., Cocoon) until her best friends Melaina (Bridget Fonda, Single White Female), Pudge (Annabeth Gish, MysticPizza), and Luanne (Page Hannah, TV's Fame ) whisk her off for a last-fling beach party where all the girls have the time of their lives! A charming bad boy throws Carson's marriage plans intothe spin cycle. His nerdy sidekick whirls Pudge through some dazzling dance steps. Sultry Melaina learns some sexy moves from an Elvis-like teen idol. And even straight-laced Luanne whips off her horn-rimmed glasses and tosses her innocence to the wind!

5 out of 5 stars Shag.......2007-03-08

Great movie. The movie was based on a weekend at Myrtle Beach. I have visited Myrtle Beach numerous times since I was a small child so I could relate to a weekend with the girls at the beach. That made to movie even more special for me. Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable........2007-01-31

This is a favorite for my family. We've had to buy it about 3 times due to others borrowing the move and never returning it. It takes place in South Carolina which is where I am from. It is a fun movie with good beach music and dancing. Although it's an older movie, it's still a great one.

1 out of 5 stars 1 star for the DVD, five stars for the VHS!.......2006-10-02

I guess I was lucky enough to get my hands on a VHS copy of this movie with the original music, which did not include any Chris Isaak or K.D. Lang songs. If this is a period movie (and it should be), then period music should be used in all the versions. It sounds like they couldn't get legal clearance to use all of the original music for the movie, so they replaced songs like "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke with a song by K.D. Lang, who was probably still in diapers in 1963. That's where the movie took a dive for me in a big way on the DVD version and it only got worse as the movie went on. Other songs were swapped out and music was added in scenes, like at the Carnival and the "Wild Night" scene, where the original version had no music.

Maybe if enough fans of this movie complain, MGM will blow the dust off their checkbook and pay the original artists (or their estates) to get the rights to use their music. Some bonus features would be nice too. The least they could do was to allow 60 Minute Man to finish playing in the credits, like it did on VHS. If you are lucky enough to own an original VHS copy, you'll notice MGM did not run the full credits like you would normally see in a movie, which would include the music credits.

5 out of 5 stars Great .......2006-08-17

Received movie quickly. It was in great shape, and I love the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Midnite Movies boxed up.......2007-05-26

These are the 4 Midnite Movie Double Features of AIP Beach Party films that were released a few years back. I enjoy being able to sit back and watch the surf nonsense. Eric Von Zipper is king. Shame they don't run these as afternoon flicks in the summer on WLVI in Boston. Also a shame they didn't create a double feature of Pajama Party and Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.

The only question is if MGM ever fixed How to Stuff a Wild Bikini. The orignal release claimed it was an anamophic version of the Scope transfer, but it turned out to be the pan and scan.

5 out of 5 stars Annette!!!.......2007-04-26

What can I say. I had a big crush on Annette growing up. I will definitely want this collection. Annette in a bikini!! Enough said.

The movie that put the Break into Spring, Where the Boys Are inspired thousands of college kids to seek sun, surf, and even s-e-x on the beaches of Florida. A bevy of co-eds (including foxy Yvette Mimieux and delightful Paula Prentiss, in her film debut) make for Fort Lauderdale, finding fun but also quite a bit of heavy-breathing drama. It's a little like a dressier, glossed-up version of the Problems with Today's Youth movies that were filling up the drive-ins of the era. The movie's actually pretty frank for 1960, although these days the lightweight stuff with Prentiss and Jim Hutton holds up best. There's also Connie Francis, who plays one of the college girls and croons the great title tune (which belongs on anybody's mix tape of classic teen-beach music). The film was remade, with vague Orwellian overtones, as Where the Boys Are 84, a truly dismal effort. --Robert Horton

Description

A group of Midwest girls head down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for spring break.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-06-11

I've watched this movie so many times on TCM. I was glad to finally get a print. The extras alone (Commentary by Paula Prentiss, Connie Francis and Paula Prentiss in "Where the Boys Were: A Retrospective" and Fort Lauderdale premiere newreel) make the purchase price well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Remembered.......2007-05-17

Great, fun, movie with some usual (for the time) acting flaws. What a pleasure to see the "old" Ft. Lauderdale, when it was still a beautiful place to go and not miles of high-rise condos. Connie Francis is a gem and Frank Gorshin is the original "Jazz Nerd". When this movie first came out, I was 12, and had a huge crush on Dolores Hart. It's good to see George Hamilton before he "knew toasted". Towards the end, the budget must have been a little tight. When "Melanie" leaves the cheap motel and walks out on the highway (US 1?), the same 3 or 4 cars keep going by in both directions, most noticeably a 59 (60?) green Plymouth which is the car that finally hits her.

5 out of 5 stars Love Love Love This Movie.......2007-05-12

I have always loved this movie and bought it after telling my two teenage daughters about it. They could not believe that teenagers in 1960 acted pretty much the way they do (minor exception - I do not think girls today are so marriage-minded as they were then) now. I have not watched the movie in years and it was fun to see all the scenes that I had forgot about. Great Movie!!

4 out of 5 stars Beach Parties..........2007-03-19

A fun movie although it has a dark side to it which today may seem pretty tame to some. All the cast were good and Connie Francis is just great.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Boys Are - movie.......2007-03-08

This is one of my two top favorite movies of all time. It was still a time of innocence in movies when things were alluded to rather than shown. Kids go away for Spring vacation to Ft. Lauderdale and kick up their heels. Back then kicking up their heels consisted of drinking a lot and that was pretty much all. It's a great movie and I highly recommend it. Connie Francis was introduced in this movie and she sings the title song in her most beautiful velvet voice.

Savage Steve Holland follows up his cult teen hit Better Off Dead with more madcap absurdity. Forget the plot, which takes frustrated cartoon prodigy John Cusack to Nantucket to woo aspiring singer-songwriter Demi Moore and take on the town's weasely real estate developer and his bullying son in a sailing regatta. For Savage Steve, the "revenge of the misfits" story is merely an excuse to unleash his arsenal of gags. Think of it as an Airplane for the teen set, punctuated by wacky twists (hyperactive Bobcat Goldthwait rampaging in a Godzilla suit), demented animated interludes, and the world's ugliest dog. The cartoonish punchlines don't always deliver, but the rat-a-tat delivery keeps them coming so fast it doesn't matter, and Cusack holds it all together with his winning presence. And, refreshingly, this is one PG rating that actually means no foul language or sex. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Good one for the collection.......2007-06-10

One of my all time favorites. A good, goffy movie that you can sit down and laugh to. If you like John Cusack, this is one of his best younger rolls.

5 out of 5 stars Classic John Cusak stuff!.......2007-06-09

This movie is hilarious! It's almost as good as Better Off Dead and Hot Pursuit. Even after watching it several times for the last 20 years, I still can't stop laughing! I love it!

3 out of 5 stars A Classic that has lost it's flair in modern times.......2007-05-26

I loved this movie and several others that John Cusack did in the 80s and wanted to add it to my library. While it was still cute and fun, it just seems more painful now with how hard they tried to slip the funny parts in. I will probably keep it for my library, but not sure I would ever replace it if it were lost. It's funny to look at the styles at the time the movie was made and it was good to see an early movie of Demi Moore's as well.

4 out of 5 stars one crazy movie.......2007-03-31

This was the best movie ever i loved the part with Demi Moore and John Cusack

4 out of 5 stars You don't understand: she's gonna lose the house!.......2006-05-17

It must have been a close call whether they could make more money trying to sell this on DVD or getting the cast to pay them not to. My advice: watch the movie, so you know how bad it is, then watch it again with the commentary by Curtis Armstrong, Bobcat Goldthwait (in his normal voice, thank God!) and Savage Steve Holland. They know it's bad, and they love it. You'll really enjoy it that second time, with what amounts to a running laugh track and better jokes than are in the movie. It's a riot.

Is Back to the Beach a masterpiece of postmodernism? Or just a slaphappy hoot? Hey, why can't it be both? Either way, this is a zippy tribute to/spoof of the 1960s Beach Party pictures. Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, landlocked in the Midwest since their surfing days, return to the California sun with their wild kids. There are mucho gags about the earlier films (including Frankie on a surfboard in front of a cheesy rear-projection wave), and cameos (much of the Leave It to Beaver cast, surf-guitar king Dick Dale). Pee-wee Herman sails in to perform "Surfin' Bird," and Annette teaches a thousand people "The Jamaican Ska." All that's missing is Erich von Zipper. This is a genuinely smart and funny movie, although it helps to know the original films, so you can savor the moment a beach boy gazes at Annette and marvels, "After all that surfing, her hair's perfectly dry!" --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Classic!.......2006-11-03

I watched this as a young child and I still enjoy this movie to this day! Back to the Beach is a wonderful film loaded with several great beach hits that will have you rocking!

5 out of 5 stars SOME THINGS LIVE FOREVER..........2006-10-05

A classic. Perhaps my favorite movie of all time. Delightful and silly, with fun & lovable characters, a few surprising cameos (OJ!), and a solid soundtrack with plenty of feel-good tunes. SRV and Dick Dale jam together on "Pipeline." Now THAT is cool.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not my cup of tea........2006-07-12

I usually don,t like beach movies, not being a fan of 60,s movies, but it was actually pretty good for a beach movie. I would recommend it to "non-beach movie" people.

1 out of 5 stars Not Quite up to the Originals..........2006-06-24

This was mildly cute, but, not even close to the humor of the originals, and, didn't even quite follow as a "whatever happened to?" of the characters from the Beach Party movies. First off, Annette's name in the Beach Party movies was Dee Dee (although, Frankie was still Frankie.) This was really a spoof of a spoof, y'know? Because, the beach movies were campy as get out to start with, but, they had an adorable quality to them, and a specific formula: Frankie does something stupid, Dee Dee gets mad. They flirt with other people to make each-other insanely jealous. They make up. (Yes, this happened here, too, but... meh.) And, where was Dead-Head, Animal, Candy, the Von Zipper Gang, for pity's sake? And, what was with Pee Wee Herman??? While the beach movies were made long before I was born, I still grew up watching them on the old movie channels and loved them. This I thought would be great, a "what happened to?". It, however, was a severe disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars It is a masterpiece of post-modernism!.......2005-10-28

Gosh, I love this movie. It was my personal candidate for movie of the year when it came out in 1987. If postmodernism--nicely described by Umberto Eco as the "ironic discovery of the past" or words to that effect--can be absolute pure unadulterated pleasure, this is it. The underlying concept--that the Franklie / Annette beach had not changed an iota since they left--has to be one of the great pop movie ideas of all time. The whole film is beyond criticism--everyone is, quite simply, perfection.

For a really, shall we say, enjoyable double feature, couple this with Psycho Beach Party.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Watch!.......2005-04-14

As a parent, I welcome any Strawberry Shortcake DVD into my home because I know that my girls will not only be entertained but get a lesson or two as well. And the songs are so catchy we bought the SSC Seaberry Beach Party Music CD to jam to in the car!

In Seaberry Beach Party, Gingersnap, Angel Cake, and Orange Blossom listen to the roar of the ocean in SSC's seashells. SSC looks through her "remembering book" and shares two sea tales. In the first story, "Coco Calypso and the Mystery of the Seaberry Shore", the seaberries are disappearing. Coco, who lives on the beach, solves the mystery and meets a new friend, Seaberry Delight, who lives in the lagoon underwater. Other characters featured in this episode are Papaya Parrot, Rainbow Sherbert, and Blueberry Muffin.
What is more precious than gold? Find out in the second story. Rainbow and Blueberry haggle over sand dollars they find on the beach. To stop the friends from fighting, Seaberry Delight tells them "The Legend of the Lost Treasure." SSC and her friends are mermaids who face a greedy Sea Serpent hoarding the precious "solid gold" sand dollars.

    Songs on this DVD:
    "Seaberry Shore"
    "I'll Treasure You"
    "Wondertime"
"A Tropical Day" - as a separate music video

    Special Features:
Introduces Berry Special Friends Coco Calypso, Papaya Parrot, Seaberry Delight, Kiwi Turtle

Berry Special Places: virtual tour of Seaberry Shore

THE GIRLS IMAGINE THEMSELVES AS MERMAIDS IN AN UNDERSEA ADVENTURE. IN MY OPINION, THEY SHOULD RELEASE A WHOLE SERIES OF STORIES AND DVD'S OF THE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE GIRLS AS MERMAIDS.

    4 out of 5 stars A Tropical Treat.......2005-02-18

    I am a huge SSC fan, and when I found out there was a new DVD for the SSC collection, I grabbed it right away. The stories are based on the idea of Strawberry's 4 new friends, Blueberry, Seaberry, Rainbow, and Coco. The one story involves a mysterious new friend that steals Coco's Seaberries, while the other story involves a berry special mermaid adventure that involves the friends searching for a berry special treasure. The colors are bright and act as sweet candy to the eye. The stories are energetic and teach children a leson on making friends and not being greedy.I enjoyed this very much:}

She dances to all the songs just like the children on the DVD and has started singing the songs on her own when the DVD is not on. It is enjoyable for the whole family. There's none of those annoying songs and you will know many of the songs HOT!HOT!HOT!, Limbo Rock, Celebration, Slicin Sand and many more. We liked it so much we also purchased Camp Out at Disney which she loves equally as well. Tiffany Burton is a very talented kid - look for her on the videos. Worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Great Character Fun.......2007-03-28

Our daughter loves this DVD. Her favorite parts are the pirates, and of course, Ariel the Mermaid, who is a live action woman/mermaid who sings her trademark song. As far as our daughter is concerned, it's 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Join right in and sing along.......2007-02-18

My kids adore the Disney Sing Alongs and the ones with the big characyers are their favorites. This one is upbeat with great songs sure to be stuck in mommy's head for hours, and lots of dancing. The biggest (and it's not that big) complaint is the kids get more face time than the characters do in this one, and my kids prefer Mickey over some random girl.
If you don't own and of the character sing alongs, the one to buy first is the Disneyland fun one. If you own that one, the next best one to get is Disney Campout. If you are sick of those two and have played them to death, this is the one to get. After you wear this copy out, Flik's Safari is the last in the series.
    Good luck and surf's up!

5 out of 5 stars Disneys sing along songs beach party at walt disney world........2007-01-10

This is a great cd. My children all love it. All the Disney sing a longs are great.

1 out of 5 stars Does Not Live Up to Expectations.......2006-09-21

Forget this DVD if you love the Disney theme parks like I do. Although I love Disneyworld a lot more than Disneyland, the Disneyland Sing Along is so much better. This Disneyworld Sing Along does not compare at all to its predeccesor. The songs, scenes and all around fun that the Disneyland Sing Along offers is what the Disney theme parks are all about. This DVD makes you feel like you are NOT part of the fun. My advice, do not bother!
Disneyworld should emulate the Disneyland Sing Along and make a contemporary version for all of us today!

4 out of 5 stars 'Beach Party / Bikini Beach' (MGM) Running time - each film: 100 minutes.......2007-06-11

Two back-to-back early '60's family beach movies, that I personally thought holds the harsh test of time. Meaning of course they're still fun to watch. First, there's 1963's 'Beach Party' where professor Bob Cummings studies the 'mating ritual' of teenagers. I liked the one scene where teen icon Frankie Avalon croons to "Don't Stop Now" surrounded by several hotties, with {to my suprise, the house band turns out to be surf rock pioneer Dick Dale}. A somewhat humorous movie, specially with gangster wanna-be Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck), actually this clown was my favorite character in the entire flick. Avalon and Annette Funcello are needless to say great in these two classics. Then, there's 1964's 'Bikini Beach' where Frankie plays duo roles. Wait! Is that young Stevie Wonder making a guest appearance here? A bit dated, but still wroth checking out.

40 years late it was a fantastic experience te watch these films. Da Cat stands out of the other on Beach Party.Along with Gidget these films were decisive for the updating of the Azorean surf culture. Bikini Beach supplied us information on skateboarding and wake (locally named JET) surfing. They are part of the beach culture of the 60s.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Lighthearted Romps.......2006-05-29

First on the bill is the one that started the whole damn thing, Beach Party. Frankie and Annette go out to a house on the beach for vacation. Frankie is excited coz he gets Annette ALONE to do with what he pleases. This isn't the case coz Annette gets freaked out by the idea of being alone with Frankie Avalon and invites a buttload of people. You see, Annette is saving herself for marriage(what a drag, huh?). Frankie's pissed at the change of events but shifts into party mode anyhow and surfs and boogies the night away with his buddies. Surf guitar king Dick Dale is along for the ride providing a few songs. All in all he's not given much to do but wear big pirate earrings and lip synch a few tunes. He spends an awful lot of time on the bongos. Soon the jealousy game begins. Frankie hooks up with a busty blond hungarian in an attempt to get Annette jealous and...horny I guess. Also renting a house on the beach is an anthropology professor who is studying the behaviors of the teenage surf culture(he's gonna write a book comparing them to African tribes). He's also able to put people in a state of suspended animation. He befriends Annette and wants to use her to get the info he needs to talk the talk and walk the walk on the California beach. Annette may have been saving herself for marriage, but she practically gives this professor carte blanche to study her in every way possible just five minutes after meeting him!! The professor is a moral man, and continues to avoid her advances. In fact he's given so many opportunities, you might find yourself yelling at the screen after awhile, telling this schmuck to just go for it. Of course we also get the debut of Frankie's arch-nemesis, Eric Von Zipper. Von Zipper is the leader of a biker gang called The Rats and Mice. He's the typical moron villain character that always says/does the dumbest thing, gets fooled, plan backfires, gets beat up, you name it. Kind of like a live action Yosemite Sam. The climax of the film gives us a Battle Royale between Von Zipper's gang and Frankie's beach buddies. In the end, everybody becomes friends, and they dance the night away. Cool cameo from Vincent Price too.
Bikini Beach ups the zaniness a bit, but if you enjoyed Beach Party, you'll like this coz the style's the same. Frankie and Annette are back at the beach for yet another romp. Annette's still not giving up the goods(not til she's married, remember?). Almost immediately Frankie pisses her off and it's straight back to breakup/make him jealous mode. This chick obviously has alot of issues to sort out, and Frankie should really consider kicking her ass to the curb at this point. But hey, the big lug is in love. Problems arise when a newspaper publisher(played by Keenan Wynn) starts writing articles about our beach buddies, calling them juvenile delinquents and trying to get them kicked off the beach.....PERMENENTLY! He travels everywhere with his pet chimpanzee(played flawlessly and dramatically by a guy in an ape suit) who also drives his Rolls Royce. The ape's name is Clyde(sound familiar?) and his purpose is to prove that what ever activities the Delinquents do, the ape can do as well, thus proving to the world that the surfing subculture live a lifestyle on the same level as an ape. Another obstacle for Frankie is a character called "Potato Bug". Bug is a very famous mod rocker and drag racing champion from Britain. This film was made around the time of the British invasion. The Beatles' popularity and influence, as we all know, would pretty much kill surf rock's popularity. Apparently the film makers didn't think too highly of this new music from across the pond, coz the character of Potato Bug is made as annoyingly and stereotypically British as you could possibly imagine. His accent, his laugh, his teeth, his lingo; I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if this guy wasn't an influence on Mike Myers when he created Austin Powers. Potato Bug is also played by Frankie Avalon, and very well I might add. Well naturally, this is the schmuck Annette goes for. Frankie can't take this hit to his ego and challenges Potato Bug to a drag race. Don Rickles shows up as a drag race announcer and gives Frankie a few pointers coz after all, Frankie's a surfer not a racer. Also on board to make things more interesting is none other than Eric Von Zipper. He certainly wants to throw a wrench in the plans. Cool cameos from surf greats, The Pyramids, Stevie Wonder(who must be about 12 here), and Boris Karloff.
Now, of all the films I like and watch, I get the most crap from family, friends and coworkers for liking these beach party movies. No kidding, they all put me through the wringer for these. Hey, I know they're corny, I wouldn't like them if they weren't. I just like the fantasy world they exist in. I love surf music, so that's up my alley(some of the original songs for the film are pretty bad). Who wouldn't want to live in a world where it's always sunny, there's always some chick that wants to sleep with you, no one has a job, but seemingly unlimited funds, everybody's having a good time, and aside from a clumsy schmuck like Eric Von Zipper and keeping your surfboard waxed, you have no problems and nothing to worry about. Yes, I'm here to tell the world that I do enjoy these films. It's an escapist fantasy like any other. Some folks may prefer Middle Earth, Tatooine or even Detroit. I like my Swingin' California Beach.

    Description

Based on a true story and Winner of Best Feature Film at Toronto Film Festival and Gen Art Film Festival, Paul Kaye (Best Actor, U.S. Comedy Arts Festival) stars as Frankie Wilde, the legendary British DJ and musical mastermind of the underground club scene whose career is cut down at its pinnacle by unthinkable tragedy - the loss of his hearing. Darkly funny and inspirational, with fierce performances by both Kaye and Kate Magowan ("24 Hour Party People"), as his sex-crazed Mrs.,you'll laugh and gasp but cheer him on as he struggles out of the abyss to reclaim his life and reputation.

    4 out of 5 stars REQUIEM FOR A SONG.......2007-05-21

IT'S ALL GONE PETE TONG is an absolute stunner. The central character has varied interests, substantial amount of money to blow on women, family, alcohol and drugs. He is at his best when he is the center of attention; scenes in the film make you want to cheer him. There is one seen in the film which is almost the MOST disturbing 2 minutes I have seen in a long time. This movie is what you and I wait for all year. My favourite scene in the film involves the central character (F.W) and the time he discovers his own worthlessness without ears. Massively inspiring. The kind of film one quotes. Amazing cause it has an Aviator like charm to offset your heart in it's own profound yet not so humble discourse.

    5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-03-10

    Guys,
this movie wasn't exported to Italy but I watched it on the flight Milan - Miami...it was incredible! I bought it on Amazon because the feeling of the Dj deaf playing and hearing the music with the human contact of the foots, with a Mac exploding the audio waves, has no words to be described!

5 out of 5 stars Instantly into my "top 10" all time!.......2006-11-05

It's All Gone Pete Tong is excellent from first to last scene. Paul Kaye is amazing. It's a movie that should be seen multpile times- it gets better and better. Besides just having a great story line and premise, the direction is great, the use of music and sound creates lasting emotion. The way they edit the sound to toggle between Frank's deafness and what is just normally happening from scene to scene is so well done that you'd have to concentrate on how they do it to understand it, because it flows so seemlessly and naturally to let the viewer feel what he's going through. This movie is funny, dramatic, original and so well made in every aspect that I would recommend it to everyone. Own this movie and pass it on- people will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars What could be more IRONIC than a deaf DJ?.......2006-10-06

Consumers love IRONY! I can sum up this film in one sentence: DJing, drugs, hummus and sex...silence...newfound appreciation for life. What makes this film great is not the fact that Frankie Wilde does drugs, rather, its HOW he does drugs (see it and you'll understand what I mean). Same thing with his DJing. The fact that he DJs is well-and-good, but you have to see HOW he DJs (pre- and post-deaf). Frankie is a special character and Paul Kaye nails this role (as he says in the DVD extras, "God, I've waited a long time for this job."). Speaking of DVD extras...WATCH THEM. Frankie the spokesmodel for Oman Whiskey, Frankie on a cooking show, Frankie on an interview with a news anchor, Frankie's Rabbi (played by Paul Kaye), among other gimmicks...classic. In regards to credentials...WINNER GEN ART FILM FESTIVAL, WINNER U.S. COMEDY ARTS FESTIVAL, WINNER TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL. And the soundtrack...exceptional club music. Particularly, Reflekt's "Need to Feel Loved" (Seb Fontaine & Jay P Remix). I guarantee you will RE-WATCH this film over and over again. Maybe you'll even take a step back and have a look at your own life?

Note: THIS FILM IS A WORK OF FICTION. IT IS A "MOCK"UMENTARY. DON'T BE FOOLED. The fact that the directors and actors deliver such a compelling final product, where consumers actually believe it is real, is testament alone that this film is a keeper.

Please feel free to disagree with my opinion; let us compare opinions, invite a few more points of view, and debate, like the humans we are.

4 out of 5 stars A very good, very different movie.......2006-06-11

I've watched this movie twice. The first time I believed the first frame of film which reads something like "This film is based on a true story", something like that. It was hard to watch for me because it brings out a lot of emotions. I sometimes didn't know if I should laugh or feel bad about the guy's situation. Then I read these reviews here on Amazon and saw that someone compared it to Spinal Tap and that it actually is not true at all. I watched it a second time and for some reason knowing that it was not true it really allowed me to just laugh and I did that much more than the first time. The tennis scene with the humus was hilarious and really remined me of Spinal Tap. If you like Spinal Tap you should like this, although this is a lot darker. Just remember that it isn't true.

5 out of 5 stars A Beach Movie with Character and Depth - One of the Best.......2007-01-04

Unlike other beach movies that were typified by silly slapstick buffoonery, muscles and bikinis RIDE THE WILD SURF was the antithesis of such tomfoolery. Still keeping the muscles and bikinis RIDE THE WILD SURF took itself serious and played it straight. Basically three buddies from California (Fabian, Tab Hunter and Peter Brown) travel to Hawaii during school break looking for the challenge of the truly big waves each with own motivations and reasons. They are not alone in their quest and that sets up the dynamics of this good film as they vie not only to be the best but to win the hearts of the three females (Barbara Eden, Shelley Fabares and Susan Hart) who become enamored with them. In their way are other surfers (including James Mitchum and Roger Davis) looking for that perfect wave as well. This all intensifies the competition, develops the camaraderie and shows the true character and sportsmanship of the surfers. Technically the surfing and cinematography are outstanding. Jan & Dean play the title song that stands toe to toe with anything the Beach Boys did in the musical genre. This is a great film.

5 out of 5 stars Fabian, Tab & Peter Half Naked and Wet - What's Not To Like?.......2006-06-17

I remember watching this movie on TV when I was a kid. When I found it while surfing (no pun intended) through the DVD section of Amazon.com I bought it. What a sentimental blast from the past! Three fabulous looking hunks, Fabian, Tab Hunter and Peter Brown, use their winter break from college to spend one last time together in Hawaii to surf Waimea, before they all head in different directions, due to issues explained later on in the movie. By the first evening they all meet the perfect girl who will eventually help them deal with and solve their issues while sitting prettily on the beach in the most fabulous bikinis, with hair that barely moves in the wind, even when they stand up to wave at their beautifully physiqued, half naked, wet men. Yummy! Responsible Tab meets obligation-ridden Dolores Hart. A curiously blond over-cautious Peter meets curiously dark haired free spirited Barbara Eden. Untrusting, angry Fabian meets cautiously-trusting, sweet, Shelly Fabares, who in my book wins the award for best bikini - a while lace number that doesn't look like it would survive a puddle spashing, nevermind a dousing from the Wild Surf. While on the surface (again no pun intended) there is a fraternal feeling of comraderie and respect between the surfers, below the surface there is an undertow (I'm not going to apologize for this pun) of serious competition, as the winner of the contest, no only becomes known as the best surfer, but earns enough money to remain job free for a year to practice for the following year's competition - a dream come true for all of them. The panoramic surfing scenes, accompanied by hawaiian drum beats, are actual films of real surfers and are fantastic, and there are plenty of them. The close ups, while the talking scenes were filmed, are shot while the guys sit on the boards in water where I've seen bigger waves in my son's wading pool. I read in Tab Hunter's book recently, that the close ups of them "riding the waves" were filmed while they were kneeling in red rider wagons, after being spashed with buckets of water. However, it works well enough and is a lot of fun to see. In this movie, the surf is the star, and is not like those dopey Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon movies where surfing is an after thought. The romances are sweet, there's comedy, drama, beautiful scenery and everybody's good looking - so hush little baby - don't you cry! I highly recommend this movie for a little nostalgic fun, if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars "RIDE THE WILD SURF" SHOOTS THE CURL .......2006-03-19

A fun "sun and surf" flick of the mid 60's - this is certainly one of the better offerings of that genre. With a good cast that includes Tab Hunter, Shelley Fabares and Fabian, this entertaining flick moves well, contains some fairly innocuous love scenes, and actually has some nice surfing footage. Perhaps not surprisingly, it has a good message for teens and it's fun to watch too. The title song was actually a hit tune as well - cute movie.
