If your English level is intermediate or upper don't buy these DVDs. They are very elementary. In spite of have being well produced, It is for begginers.

5 out of 5 stars Good for China.......2005-10-03

My wife and I teach English in China. Her freshman, oral English class is a special challenge as many students have studied but never heard English spoken.

We bought the first DVD and reviewed it before the first class. I didn't have time to look at it before arriving in China. OOPS, wish I had. Now I'm ordering all four. The first time she used it in class, her 'monitor' (student class leader) said, 'this is the most fun class'.

It's not just the DVD, my wife is a very fun person, but the DVD helped. We have a new media classroom and this is one of the best resources we use in it.

The first hint that this isn't your normal, staid Spanish review course is the subtitle that's flashed across the screen: the "Salsa-riffic World of Spanish." The Standard Deviants, a cast of ebullient young performers who believe no joke is too bad as long as its memorable, bring their talents to a course in introductory Spanish in this video. Lots of flashy graphics keep things lively, but the course material itself is rock solid--it's been approved by an academic panel. Following some basic information on where Spanish is spoken, the real lessons begin with instruction on pronunciation and the Spanish alphabet (which, of course, uses some typographical symbols not used in English). A bit of vocabulary is imparted as the pronunciation lessons progress, and after some pointers on capitalization, simple lessons in practical conversation begin. The video proceeds to the inescapable bane of many language students, conjugating verbs. While this production won't be a substitute for an actual course in Spanish (and the cast specifically points out that it doesn't intend to be), the presentation is consistently energetic, with the lessons easy to remember. Someone who is interested in learning (or reviewing) basic material will no doubt gain from watching it. --Robert J. McNamara

4 out of 5 stars Habla espanol - basics review.......2007-04-04

Interesting humorous approach to learning spanish. Sometimes a little too much humor and not enough substance. Rather fast paced, but you can go back and review things you missed. Good systematic approach to the language, starting with easy, everyday phrases and moving on from there.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-04

After reading others' reviews I decided to give this DVD a try. While it does have a few errors, it is fast paced and crazy fun - just what my middle schoolers need. I really like using it.

1 out of 5 stars This DVD is not what you think it is. .......2006-04-10

I've never seen a course as bad as this one. I mean, i love the idea of learning a language in a colourful multimedia style, but it's the actual content of the course that i have a problem with.

Truthfully, this DVD captured my imagination BEFORE I bought it. When I watched it, I tried to forward the DVD player onto part two, of the 10 or 12 episodes that I THOUGHT would be there.

But no...there aren't any other episodes.. and the program that I thought was just the introduction is actually the whole course. I already know what "vaca" is. And any idiot knows that "muy bien" is very good.

So, If you're at that level, then god bless you.

In fairness, I almost learned more Spanish from watching Sesame street. I bought this product, because it was fun, colourful, interesting and funky. It is, but it's also cheap, and tacky and you don't learn anything that you couldn't learn on the internet for free in 5 minutes. In terms of presentation, I found that it was fast and well edited with good presenters.

Ever read the first chapter of a children's language book? Well - that's what the whole DVD is like. Very little information. This product has very little educational value to anyone over the age of 12.

The female presenters are quite attractive though, so I gave it 1 star.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard Deviants-Habla Espanol?.......2006-03-11

I have bought several learn english DVD's and nothing can compare to this one..It is like having a teacher right in your own home..Very easy to learn for even the hard to learn types..I am actually speaking spanish after watching the dvd 4 times..I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to REALLY learn Spanish with ease..THIS IS THE REAL DEAL and at a very affordable price........Drew M.

1 out of 5 stars Same Program Different Titles.......2005-12-22

Normally I would have given a 5 star rating BUT I first bought Advanced Spanish - Beyond the Basics. I liked it so much I bought Advanced Spanish - Verbs, Spanish 1&2 and ¿Habla Español?. My tape of Advanced Spanish - Verbs is IDENTICAL to Advanced Spanish - Beyong the Basics. In fact it had that as the title for the video when you view the tape. The DVD of ¿Habla Español? is IDENTICAL to the Spanish 1 tape except for some quizzes. I wrote the company with this complaint and got no answer. If you go to their site you will find about 20 Advanced Spanish DVDs that have descriptions that all appear to be the same DVD with different titles. I would definitely not buy Spanish 1. Instead buy the ¿Habla Español? DVD. If you already have Spanish 1, you won't get much from this DVD. Other than this, I would be very careful buying from this company.

4 out of 5 stars Presentation Review.......2007-02-13

This was a great video for helping novices with making presentations. It was presented in a very light format but contained valuable information. It was most helpful and held my attention throughout the video. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Very cute, concise basics in 57 min.......2006-06-13

The main menu consists of a min or two on faking confidence in communication apprehension, using supporting materials, organizing your presentation (comparisons, persuading the audience including Monroe's), delivering the speech, style of speech (clarity, rhythm, parallel wording) & the delivery, the moment of truth closing (body apearance, language, eye contact, vocal varation.)
I did learn a few things since I did not take public speaking in high school nor in college. It was very easy to follow with included exadurated almost silly presentation examples to every point they taught, but never allowing it to be too moronic.
I rented this at my library, be sure to check yours.

If you're looking to really learn the French language, as opposed to briefly memorizing a few phrases to help you find a bathroom or complain to the doctor of your traveler's stomach, the Standard Deviants have the video for you. Their French, Part I is a language lesson for the MTV generation. Short segments, funky graphics, and personable, youthful teachers make watching this tape entertaining, rather like Sesame Street for grownups. Using the "functional approach," making sure people can communicate and accomplish tasks in the new language, the video introduces French with phrases and full sentences, presenting ideas through demonstration. The point is to help you think in French. Dialogue is clearly transcribed on the screen, so you can see what the words look like, and two cards included with the tape give translations of some of the dialogues and useful vocabulary. Note, though, that all of the explanations are given in English, as opposed to an immersion program (meaning all in French, including explanations) such as French in Action. Which style works best is purely a matter of personal preference. Skits put the conversations into context and provide levity. Yet, as is clearly stated in the beginning of the lesson, this series is intended to be a supplement to a class, and French really needs to be practiced through speaking and writing. The benefit, though, of video is you can rewind as much as needed to master pronunciation and to let the concepts sink in. The tape opens with pronunciation, with close-ups of faces as they pronounce the alphabet to help you learn how to shape your mouth around the French letters. It then covers a range of topics including -er verbs, gender, articles, adverbs, être, adjectives, pronouns, avoir, numbers, aller, and faire. While the video could benefit from more native French speakers, this is a delightful introduction to the language, and a fun complement to a high school or college French class. Don't miss the flubbed lines during the credits. French, Part 2 is also available. --Jenny Brown

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Parlez-vous Francais - The Basics.......2007-03-18

This is the best language tape I've ever used! It cuts a language down to the basics and uses an approach much like Sesame Street. It makes any language fun to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good intro.......2007-03-01

I've been watching these tapes with a friend, having never had any French before. Yes, they do go through things fast, but I go back and review again and I haven't found that to be a problem. Yes, it's extremely corny, but it can be taken as camp and it adds a little levity in my opinion. The emphasis on pronounciation is extremely helpful, since that's the main thing a book can't do for you. You'll definitely need to supplement this with something else but it is well worth the $5.

2 out of 5 stars If you're a beginner, this DVD is NOT for you........2006-03-07

If you recently decided that you would like to learn French, this DVD is not for you. They FLY through the material. Even when they want you to repeat after a presenter they still go fast! I noticed that I kept rewinding the video to try and make sense of what they just presented. It was so annoying having to rewind constantly! The beginning of the video discloses that the DVD is a supplement to classroom study. If you ask me, they need to put this disclosure (in flashing neon lights) on the cover and product description because by no means will you learn anything from this video without prior classroom experience.

In summary, if you're just starting to learn French this DVD is not for you. If you already know the French language and want to brush up on your skills, this DVD might suit you well.

I'm really glad I was able to rent this DVD (through Blockbuster Online) before I made the mistake of buying it.

My search for a good instructional French DVD continues...

4 out of 5 stars My students LOVE this!.......2005-08-26

I am a middle school French teacher. I have been reading the reviews for this video and had to respond. If you are a complete novice at French, do not get this video. However, if you are a student or have taken French in the past, this is a great tool to help you refresh or just to explain things a little differently. My students love watching this video. I show it in little pieces based upon what we are currently studying. They ask to watch it over and over again, even months later! I highly recommend this video as an accessory to any French program!

2 out of 5 stars Too annoying to be helpful.......2005-02-26

I fortunately rented this dvd before purchasing and I would highly recommend that others do this as well. Some reasons I would not recommend purchasing this DVD:
1. Non-native speakers. They do speak slowly & clearly, but it's with a non-native accent, that's not going to help much if you plan to actually go to France.
2. Too much grammar instruction. Explaining the grammar rules to me doesn't help nearly as much as hearing it used in context. Too much explanation not enough repetition.
3. Lame lame lame attempts at humor & conversation. It didn't bother me that much the first time through, but in order to actually learn the material one needs to rewind and go over the same sections repeatedly. I couldn't stand it. Humor is absolutely a personal-preference thing, so you'll have to see for yourself if you find it annoying.
4. Not enough conversation, not enough French. There are only a handful of conversations in French to listen to & repeat. They do a LOT of talking in English. I would prefer much more exposure to the actual language.

Overall, I didn't find this DVD very helpful. I second the suggestion to watch DVDs you already own using the French language options (if available). You'll pick things up in context.

5 out of 5 stars Chemistry prereq for RN program........2006-02-24

You don't need to be a kid to watch this video. I'm 30 and going back to school to be an RN. I can't understand my professor to "save my life" but this video helped me very much! The Deviants act kind of cheesy but this video really gives a different perspective on how to understand Chemistry. It's worth a watch for sure. If you're buying it used, be sure to ask the seller if the insert is included. They refer to it several times and my seller did not include it in mine. Happy studying!

4 out of 5 stars Attend Class Every Day, Read Your Chem Book Ahead of Time..........2002-05-02

... and then, and only then, should you give Standard Deviant's Chemistry a look. First, the topics and the way they are covered is pretty basic. Second, not much is said in regards to the most common mistakes that chem students make (not reffering to Kelvin temp. in terms of degrees and Sig. Figs. are mentioned.) Third, the Deviants are somewhat distracting but hilarious nonetheless. But overall, these are excellent review and supplemental aids for they help impress upon you what is critical, but only slightly effective on their own and by themselves. Good luck with Chemistry!

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY! Explains the subject matter very well........2002-04-13

Makes chemistry very entertaining. Remember, sigma does not equal beer!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful chemistry learning tools........1999-09-22

This series of tapes is great. They have a sense of humor without clouding the details of the science they are teaching. They present the topics in rapid fire action that prevents any thought of boredom. Great learning tool that makes learning chemistry easy and fun. Good for elementary through college levels.

French, Part 2 picks up, not surprisingly, where the Standard Deviants' French, Part 1 leaves off. Using the same functional approach to French, this tape uses fun graphics, humorous skits, transcriptions, and translations to help you learn the language (and once again the video begins with the caveat that these videos are intended to supplement, not replace, a class). Two cards included with the tape give translations of some of the dialogues, conjugations, and useful vocabulary. Beginning with a subject near and dear to le français, we visit a café where we learn about food while also discovering le partif, prendre, and different ways of asking questions. Three more sections deal with describing yourself, shopping, and morning and evening rituals, covering topics such as irregular verbs (including décrire, vouloir, and dire), regular verbs, more adjectives and adverbs, conjugations, the past tense, direct and indirect pronouns, and reflexive verbs. Occasionally dialogues are repeated with the English translation beneath them, which seems superfluous given that the translations are provided on the enclosed cards. While the video could benefit from more native French speakers, this is a delightful introduction to the language, and a fun complement to a high school or college French class. --Jenny Brown

1 out of 5 stars sham products - crap for profit by misleading public.......2006-10-02

These Standard Deviant products are shams. The producers hire a bunch of theater students who know nothing about the subjects taught (I unwittingly purchased SD Physics and Spanish at the same time). These actors read scripts with the most innane material, try to be funny and cute (but they are bad actors to begin with and not funny). I suspect they are hired based on whether they are attractive, and I wonder if they are even paid for their efforts. Anyway, SD products do not teach well or entertain. The material is taken directly from textbooks and read verbatim by "aspiring actors" with grossly inadequate explanation. One of the worst products I've ever happened upon.

1 out of 5 stars Jvenile, not advanced!.......2003-07-19

The title is misleading. This really is not advanced Spanish. They spend the first quarter of the program reviewing basics (noun genders, adjective agreements, etc.) so that's wasted. By the time we reach the end, we're just learning about direct and indirect object pronouns. These are the things you learn in an Intro II Spanish course at the local community college. (The proof is in the syllabus of a course I took!)

Another gripe is the presentation. They use a kind of silly, juvenile format with embarrassingly bad, scripted comedy. It's like something you'd see on Saturday morning cartoons.

Last, of the six or so youngsters who deliver the course (they all seem to be about 19 years old), only one or two of them has a good (i.e., native) Spanish accent. The others all speak with that flat, nasal American sound that sounds so bad in Spanish! And one of the presenters made a bad grammatical faux-pas when he said, "No problema" which is a Bart Simpson-ism. It should be, "No hay problema".

Apart from the bad accents I would have no qualms with this DVD if they'd just labeled it correctly, for instance, "Spanish Reveiew for Kids".

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Spanish made child's play.......2003-02-13

What a fun way to learn spanish. I was really struggling with the verbs. While Standard Deviants stuff is not the serious way to approach a subject, it's much more effective in my book. It's refreshing compared to most of the other junk out there. I would say that if you are looking for something traditional, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for something different, look here.

4 out of 5 stars Worth getting as an adjunct only........2005-10-30

This coupled with Chemistry for Dummies and a few other Chemistry adjucts are the best bet for success in Chemistry I.

The 3 video set covers most of 1st Semester College Chemistry, and scrapes the surface of 2nd semester.

All the videos are good except...

Cons: (1) Video 1 has about 5 equations for calculating Moles, molarity, etc that are WAY too complicated. There is a simple algebraic equation to solve for all of these problems that they barely touch on (and they don't tell you that it can be applied to the following problems), and then the go into their preferred method which is pretty complicated and time consuming, but could be solved easily and quickly with the prior equation.

(2) The format is geared toward younger students and keeping your attention, so there are frequent skips, outtakes, interruptions etc... for all Standard Deviants videos. It's like watching a middle-school tv show for college students. For me, this doesn't add to my learning, but it does provide some laughs occasionally.

Overall, worth having as an ADJUNCT... it covers the basics and doesn't give you the foundation for those topics that you'll get in class and from your book.

Making algebra entertaining seems like a hopeless, if not downright insane, task, but that doesn't stop the Standard Deviants. A youthful cast of performers, who believe no joke, skit, or costume is too corny as long as it helps a student remember something important, throw themselves into "The Adventurous World of College Algebra" by beginning with a spoof of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Inside a cave, two Indiana Jones wannabes search for, you guessed it, x. Despite the lighthearted approach, this is a serious algebra review course, compiled under the direction of academic advisers. The lessons begin by answering, "What is algebra?" and quickly move into quadratic roots and factors and a section on linear equations. A wacky sense of humor stays a constant, with spoofs of pop culture programs as well as flashy computer graphics appearing to illustrate essential concepts. At the end of each lesson a quiz appears (which the student can take or skip), and the DVD also contains the "Algebra Adventure," a multiple choice test taken by using the DVD player's remote control. A "Quick Review" segment provides a fast overview of the contents. This is an innovative approach to what has often been a daunting and dry subject. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

Required study by high schools and colleges, algebra has been a notorious stumbling block for students. Without a solid foundation in algebra, however, you cannot expect to do well in more advanced math and science courses, such as calculus, physics and chemistry. Suitable for students of all ages, this DVD presents the three basic principles of algebra in a clear, fun and approachable manner: functions, algebraic properties and linear equations.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational. Not sure if education will dominate the entertainment........2006-06-22

This is the strangest educational video that I have ever seen. The creators use a character called Idaho Jones that is "modeled" on the screen adventurer Indiana Jones. It starts with a scene similar to the opening one of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Idaho is with a woman in a cave and has discovered a golden X. He replaces it with an algebra textbook, but it is too light, causing all the traps to be triggered. After he avoids the traps, a character modeled after the sadistic Nazi in the "Raiders" movie takes the X from him.
Throughout the remainder of the tape, there are occasional short segments of Idaho as he continues the search for the golden X. Since this is a low budget film, the acting, accents and special effects are all REALLY bad. I laughed in spite of myself. There are other characters used, including parodies of a Chinese guru, a real estate agent for Algebraic Properties Inc. and a stuffy scientist with the voice of a man with severe nasal congestion.
Underlying all of this amusing nonsense, there is some serious mathematics education going on. When they are concentrating on mathematics, the explanations are very good and the animation of the algebraic rearrangements makes them easy to follow. The first subject covered is a brief history of algebra and the concepts of relations and functions. While there are occasions when more complex functions are included, the concentration is on linear functions. They are graphed, described, rearranged and inverted, and all are visually displayed when explained. All of the properties of linear equations are covered, including their roots.
While I liked the way the mathematics was presented, the other stuff is so silly that I don't know how to evaluate it. There is no doubt that the tape can be used to teach high school and college students algebra. They will certainly get some laughs from it, I just do not know if the silliness will dominate the math. Humor is such a matter of personal taste that I wouldn't presume to say anything more than while I laughed, it was all of the groaner variety. One thing is certain; students will not consider the tape boring.

I recommend this to anyone having trouble in Algebra. It walks you through problems and gives you the terminology of the subject. Great for reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Savior.......2001-12-27

I found the tapes helped me a great deal, considering I have been out of school for 20 years and never learned algebra in high school. The animations are wonderful and most of the time very clear. Of course with anything, you have to do it over and over again until you retain the information, but I will definitely say "Do not start school with out the tapes." There's only one catch, Standard Deviants recorded the tapes so that they build upon one another and you'll need to buy the entire math collection if you want a totally clear understanding. I live by Standard Deviants. Good Luck...

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall for beginners or if having difficulty.......1999-05-17

I am a High School Freshman just finishing Algebra I & II. I found the tape boring, since it was all review. The little skits reinforced things I already knew. They misrepresented the length. At the beginning of the tape, they said "Part I" would be two hours, but it was only one hour and twenty minutes. If it was all new to me, I would consider it pretty good, since it covered everything, and showed me short-cuts I already knew. The animation was very good. It would probably be very useful to someone who was having problems in Algebra, or just beginning in Algebra.
