From The Terminator to Titanic, you can always rely on writer-director James Cameron to show you something you've never seen on the big screen before. The guy may not consistently pen the most scintillating dialogue in the world (and, especially in this movie, he doesn't seem to have a particularly high regard for women), but as a director of kinetic, push-the-envelope action sequences, he is in a class by himself. In True Lies, the highlight is a breathtaking third-act jet and car chase through the Florida Keys. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a covert intelligence agent whose wife of 15 years (Jamie Lee Curtis) finally finds out that he's not really a computer salesman and who becomes mixed up in a case involving nuclear arms smuggling. Tom Arnold is surprisingly funny and engaging as Schwarzenegger's longtime spy partner, and Bill Paxton is a smarmy used-car salesman (is that redundant?) whom Arnold thinks is having an affair with his wife. In the 1930s, nobody combined glamour, romantic comedy, and drama better than Carole Lombard. Having entered show-biz at the age of 12, the former Jane Alice Peters (b. Oct. 6, 1908, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) distinguished herself from equally stellar contemporaries like Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, and Jean Arthur by establishing her versatility as a fashion icon whose beauty was matched by playful intelligence and a bright, independent persona (on screen and off) that predated feminism by 40 years and made her an appealing foil for admiring male costars. As this delightful half-dozen of her lesser-known features makes abundantly clear, her meteoric success was entirely well-deserved, and The Glamour Collection shows her as a star on the rise, gaining confidence and adoring fans with each new picture. As one of Paramount's most valued contract players, she starred in five of the six films included here (Love Before Breakfast was a loan-out to Universal), beginning with 1931's Man of the World, a Parisian romance written by Herman J. Mankiewicz (10 years before Citizen Kane) and headlined by future Thin Man star William Powell as an expatriate con artist who falls for Lombard's spoiled heiress--a romantic pairing made all the more believable by the stars' real-life marriage later that year.

A loose adaptation of The Admirable Crichton, We're Not Dressing (1934) is Depression-era entertainment at its most diverting, employing a full stable of Paramount players (including George Burns and Gracie Allen, Ethel Merman, and a young "Raymond" Milland) in a shipwreck romance between socialite Lombard and singing sailor Bing Crosby, who croons songs aplenty (including "Stormy Weather") and shares equal screen-time with an affectionate bear! Directed by Norman Taurog (best known for his later work with Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Elvis Presley), it's every bit as fun as the Marx Brothers hits from the same period. Arguably the best film in this set, Hands Across the Table is noteworthy for the typically stylish direction of Mitchell Leisen, who brings his reliable sophistication to the tale of a New York manicurist (Lombard) who must choose between potential suitors Fred McMurray (as a would-be heir to a fortune) and disabled ex-pilot Ralph Bellamy. (This being 1934, Norman Krasna's otherwise excellent script restricts Bellamy to the romantic sidelines with outdated feel-good sentiment.) Love Before Breakfast (1936) is a similarly enjoyable but typically chauvinistic dose of '30s high-society love-play, in which Lombard bounces between boyfriend Cesar Romero and a Wall Street tycoon (Preston Foster) who knows what's best for her and bosses her around accordingly. In the mystery/comedy The Princess Comes Across (1936), McMurray returns as a lovestruck bandleader, falling for Lombard's radiant Swedish princess (played as a playful nod to Greta Garbo) on a cruiser bound for Hollywood.

Viewers may find some marginal entertainment in the Wishmaster series' fourth entry, which attempts to cast its perverse anti-hero, the Djinn, in a sympathetic light. However, silly plot developments and childish splatter effects undo whatever interest is generated by the premise. This time around, the Djinn is summoned by a woman whose boyfriend was crippled in an accident. He assumes the form of her lawyer and offers her the standard three wishes, two of which bring her a healthy settlement and a boost to her sex life. However, the Djinn¹s generosity comes with a price: when he grants the third wish, more Djinn will be released from Hell to bring destruction to Earth. But in order to do this, he must make the woman love his true form (a horned demon). This nominally intriguing idea is bungled at every turn by hamfisted scripting and performances, making Wishmaster 4 a must-see for series completists only. --Paul Gaita

Love this DVD.......2006-04-09

I thought this DVD was awesome. Great underground hip-hop with spectacular old school videos of NBA ballers doin their thing back in high school. My favorite section was the videos of NBA players in high school plaing with elite athletes in other sports like D. McNabb giving a no look pass to Antoine Walker for a dunk or Jason Williams sweet pass to Randy Moss for the throw down. Definitaly get this DVD, you will love it.

The Best Hoop Tape Ever
This could be the best hoop DVD ever. The music is hot. The action is unbelievable. The dudes ballin on 5th avenue and the tricks from Hollywood Hoops is sik. But the best part is seein these guys wen they was in school. Lebron dribblin OVER people, Nash with a good haircut, Rasheed with a flattop, Kobe, AI, Jermaine and Flash, the list goes on and on. Plus Bobbito knows his hoops and him trickin it out is crazy. I rate this better than One Love 1 and that DVD gets played out all the time on my player...now I mix it up with 1 and 2.
I played in Chicago and seein Imari Sawyer and Q and Magette brought back my school days.

Plus check out Nate Robinson in school. that dude can ball.

i was at my friends house yesterday watching this crapy dvd when i was going to burst of how board i was and the worst part of the whole dvd is the steve nash section i am warning you DO NOT BUY THIS DVD

The Bronx She Knew.......2004-05-23

Disregard anything you may have heard that this film is not realistic, or representative of "the Bronx today". It's Morris Park. Just the way it was in 1988, when the film was made, and essentially the same today. Some residents have never ventured as far as Manhattan. Ask Kelly Cinante, or Nancy Savoca for that matter. This film is so culturally "true" it could have been called a documentary. Notice how it populates "the Sopranos".

Not the Bronx I know.......2004-03-14

I am a transplant from New York to Connecticut. My husband and I wondered what Bronx this movie was about. One time there was a large Italian population around Pelham Parkway, but that was back in the 1960's. Over the years most Italians moved to Queens, Long Island or New Jersey. We couldn't figure out what time period this was supposed to represent. The Bronx changed colors from Italian and Irish to black.

So for me this movie did not ring true. I did not see one black person in it. Not in the bars, or on the streets. I also could not understand why the bride didn't see her groom-to-be was a boy-man. He certainly showed that in his many promises to her to come back in an hour or so and then go out and get drunk with his friends.

The acting was good. The music was terrific. However, because I felt the movie portrayed a Bronx that no longer exists, I wouldn't recommend it.

True Love.......2003-08-23

I thought this movie was classic. I first saw in on Cinemax. Never see it in video stores or libraries.

A great movie to show to your friends when they are about to get married, to scare the ... out of them. The thing that really hits home in this film is how 2 people in love begin to discover things about each other which seem like roadblocks, that they either weren't expecting or thought they would have no problem managing. And isn't it how many relationships start out - bliss and no problems. It's only when it comes to that settling down concept, that i believe as "Mike" says in the film, "Everything becomes very very complicated".

There were several strong performances in this movie, and some of the bit players nearly stole the show, like the dude working in the deli who played your classic nightmare employee.

I had a chance to meet Aida Tuturro during filming of The Wright Verdicts and told her how much I liked this film. I had also met Ron Shapiro at a closed door audition, who is the brother of Rick Shapiro(who plays "Kevin"). Ron and Rick are practically identical, except Ron has some height. I'm surprised that the two haven't managed to do work that has gotten any attention.

Overall, I think this film is a must see for people of all ages. I think it's one of the most naturally funny movies without trying too hard that I've ever seen. And at the same time, it can be scary for people contemplating marriage.

Thumbs, and fingers, up - to make this film a "10".

This movie is an eye opener for any bride-to-be. First of all, it details the struggle between what the bride and groom want for their wedding. In other movies about upcoming weddings, brides mostly reigned over the entire wedding plan. This movie detailed what the groom also wanted. Donna and Michael disagreed on almost all wedding plans--even the color of the tuxes! It is a good dose of wedding-fantasyland and marital reality. Donna realizes Michael intends to maintain the tightly-knit relationships with his friends, once they are married. Doesn't he know he can't? The struggle between letting go of the life you are comfortable with and the unexplored reality of living with someone you've never lived with, even though you love him or her, creates doubt.

A stunning debut for Nancy Savoca!.......1999-05-20

I first saw this movie in 1989, before anyone knew who Ron Eldard and Annabella Sciorra were. It is just as good now as it was 10 years ago, proof that quality work withstands the test of time! Hysterical, painful, touching. An excellent study of the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of Italian-American families, as well as of the multitude of stresses one feels on the journey to the altar ... If you liked "The Daytrippers", you will fall head over heels for "True Love". Savoca's (first and) best work in my humble opinion.
