Professional tennis makes an unlikely but surprisingly effective backdrop for a lively romantic comedy in Wimbledon. Peter Cort (Paul Bettany, Master and Commander), once ranked 11th in the world, has slipped to 119th and is heading into his last Wimbledon tournament when he runs into Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst, The Virgin Suicides, Spider-Man), a rising star. The two strike up a whirlwind romance that gives his game new life--but she insists it's going to be nothing but a passing fling. Their affair heats up and Cort finds himself steadily rising through the competition while Lizzie stumbles... Of course, the ending is never really in doubt--but Bettany is a unique cinematic presence, pale and lithe, doubtful of life but also hungry for it. Thanks to him and the ever-engaging Dunst, Wimbledon is funnier, more suspenseful, and more touching that anyone might expect, turning a conventional flick into a genuine charmer. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

In many ways Federer is much like the man he succeeded at the All England Club in 2001. Federer showed his former idol the door with a sensational performance. The fourth-round thriller ended Sampras' remarkable reign - at least for the moment.

5 out of 5 stars One dominant era ends as another one begins.......2006-11-02

It is the classic tale of the changing of the guard as the seasoned veteran is taken down by the upstart heir apparent to the throne. Sampras owned Wimbledon since '93 and his only loss was to Krajicek in '96, but Federer at the 2001 Wimbledon showed the great potential that he has, but still wouldn't be fully realized until a year later when he won the 2002 Tennis Masters Championship and the rest is history. He has dominated tennis since like no player before him, including Sampras. Nadal has been the only player able to show that Federer is beatable, even if it's only on clay. Sampras was on his way out and would retire the next year at the U.S. Open and Federer was just getting going. Both were at the top of their games on that day during the 4th round of Wimbledon. It was a great match with the classic Sampras serve and volley with Federer showing great poise under pressure which has become his trademark. When you watch Federer or Sampras, you can't tell if they are down or up in the match, they just play with the killer blank face. Sampras has a record 14 Grand Slams with seven of those at Wimbledon and was ranked #1 6 straight years. Federer has 9 slams at 25, 4 straight Wimbledon titles and is the first man in the Open era to win at least 10 titles three straight years in a row. Get the DVD to see history as they will both go down at #1 and #2 in the history of men's tennis. Which order they go is up to you, but there is no debating they are the two greatest ever. Sorry Laver. Sorry Borg. If Agassi didn't lose so many finals to Sampras, he would have went down as #2 behind Federer.

Description

As The Wimbledon Championships moved into the eighties, they were greeted by one of the most memorable Gentlemen's Singles Finals ever. 1980 saw Sweden's Bjorn Borg face the promising 21-year-old American, John McEnroe. Borg had four Wimbledon titles under his belt and was the firm favorite. McEnroe however had shown his potential two years earlier, reaching the semi-final from the qualifying stages. Vastly contrasting his character, Borg remained calm and composed, while McEnroe was openly emotional and determined. 240 minutes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Match.......2007-05-19

The DVD was of excellent quality and clarity. It was a pleasure to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Don't read the box!.......2006-05-15

Once you start this DVD, it'll be difficult to stop watching until match point. I can't add anything that wasn't mentioned by other customer reviewers, except this -- If you're like most tennis fans, you've probably forgotten who won, which makes the recording all the more exciting. This brings me to my only gripe -- the packaging gives away the outcome. So, when it arrives, don't read, just open the drawer on your DVD player and watch.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Match.......2006-03-28

The photography is fine, McEnroe behaves throughout, and neither player seems to say a word during the entire five sets. The spectators, like the players, act like human beings, with no uncontrolled temper fits, and no juvenile behavior among the fans. It is pleasant to watch a tennis match rather than a performance. The significant thing here is that both players display awesome playing throughout this match. Thoroughly enjoyable. And no commercials--just five sets of great tennis with sensible commentary.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Ages.......2005-08-02

I've been watching and playing tennis for parts of five decades, still active in the 55 and Over USTA tournaments. However, I have found that most of my tennis friends don't have the interest to watch a 5-set men's match, especially given the way the men play the game today.

This match, a classic by any standard, will probably hold the interest of most tennis fans. While tennis in 1980 was played at a slower, less powerful pace due to the use of wood racquets, the shot making was nearly flawless, especially during the epic 34 point tie-breaker at the end of the fourth set. It is tennis the way most of us hackers who grew up watching Laver, Rosewall, Ashe, Borg and McEnroe, remember it. This match highlights the touch and finesse both men owned, as well as allowing the viewer to see points crafted like a chess master might craft a winning attack.

The BBC announcers are always understated, letting the play take center stage. I personally enjoy seeing the mastery of the young McEnroe at the net and the unflappable Borg, looking the same whether he was losing the first set 6-1 or getting ready to win the match at the end of the fifth set.

Re-reading this review, I realize that I'm probably in need of a Tennis Exorcist. Which doesn't diminish the fact that it was a great match.

5 out of 5 stars It is Star Wars in its own genre........2005-06-14

It is one of the rarest of a match play of all time in tennis history. Words can neither describe the match nor can some critiques downplay it. So, just watch it and enjoy a rare execution of one of the highest quality of tennis.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great romantic comedy.......2007-06-19

OK, the story is not credible (especially tennis-wise), but who cares? This is a nice, well acted and well scripted romantic comedy, not perfect but way way above average. Yes, the story is fairly predictable, and the structure not original (encounter, love, quarrel, love again), BUT the characters are well constructed, the chemistry between Bettany & Dunst is excellent, and the music is a joy. If you are looking for a feel-good romantic comedy, I highly recommend Wimbledon (especially if you are into "sport" movies).

4 out of 5 stars Makes tennis interesting.......2007-06-01

On the rare occasions when I watch tennis or golf, I always wonder what the player is thinking when they are getting ready to hit the ball. This movie answers that.
First of all, I LOVE Paul Bettany. I think he's a great and charming actor and is the main reason I originally watched this movie. But I ended up really liking it for the way the movie was shot as well. The tennis matches were fun to watch and I enjoy this movie more each time I watch it.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant performance, a wonderful film.......2007-05-09

Peter Colt, played by Paul Bettany and Lizzie Bradbury, played by Kirsten Dunst, team up to provide a brilliant performance, which result in a wonderful film.

The theme centers around professional tennis and these athletes, through their competitive spirits, and desire to win... at all costs... provides the background for an incredible story, filled with romance, drama, comedy... and love!!!

The plot surfaces a tennis player, once ranked 11th in the world, losing his grip and ability to win. He confronts the end of a great career and is looking for alternative employment, choosing to teach at a ladies club.

This is his last Wimbledon tournament and there, he meets Lizzie Bradbury, who is a very strong player with a great future ahead, guided by an over-protective father, who strongly believes that a relationship would put an end to her concentration.

They fall in love. Their first encounter provides for great fun. Soon, they are madly in love... and this seems to be the potion our hero required to gain his power back, for he gets to the finals and may become the next champion.

Throughout the movie we found ourselves enchanted by the performances, the dialogue is simply superb, and the monologues of Peter... Peter Colt... are priceless jewels of British humor!

Sincerely recommend this movie if you want a winning combination to entertain you and your family... fun... clean... with great energy... romance... comedy... and tennis!!!
What else can we ask for?

1 out of 5 stars only their love is superior.......2007-05-08

It is about a guy who ranked not even world's top 100 in tennis, and because he found "love" and "sex" with the girl, he became number 1 in the world and won the wimbeldon.

yes, only his love and sex is superior. could other tennis players have love in their heart too? yes, you bet. but the movie tells you that no one else's love is as good as theirs. their love is simply superior to everyone else's.

2 out of 5 stars Cloying romance with little emphasis on authenticity.......2007-03-18

This was a really sappy romantic story. It wasn't so much the actors as it was the script, which was so contrived that it even made John McEnroe and Chris Evert seem like athletes trying to be actors trying to be commentators, instead of the athletes who became the competent commentators that they are.

In addition, there are the annoying special effects capturing the bounces and trajectories of tennis balls, along with the drivel interior monologue of the lead actor. Also, how about that semifinals match? It had a crowd smaller than your average Friday night high school football game. Please, the director should have watched a few Wimbledon matches before going with that scene.

Summary: Sappy script, predictable, and lacking in authenticity. Not recommended.

There have been numerous classic encounters during The Wimbledon Championships, none more so than the 1981 Men's Final between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. There could not have been two more contrasting characters, McEnroe renowned for his temper tantrums and Borg the ice-cool and reserved Swede. 202 minutes of gripping action and incredible tennis. Borg and McEnroe battled it out, pushing their levels of physical and mental endurance to the limit in this dramatic 4 set showdown.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Still good tennis !.......2005-10-22

While not as compelling and not quite the caliber of the 1980 match - the '81 final is still worth watching. For me, more because historically this was really the changing of the guard - at the time. Though Borg would play the U.S. Open after this match, this was the one that brought him down (sadly). The DVD and the original film quality are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Tennis Match.......2005-10-22

Although the 1980 Wimbledon Final between Borg and McEnroe is more famous, this match is a classic in its own right. Top quality tennis of contrasting styles, superb understated commentary, extremely clear, vivid picture. And since McEnroe always behaved himself when he played Borg out of respect for Borg, it's not the behavior but the beauty of McEnroes's tennis, that finally takes center stage. Experiencing Borg the iceman, and the volcanic yet controlled McEnroe at the top of their games, makes this match a pleasure to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-07-24

As a tennis fan I'm always into classic matches, and they dont come much closer than this. An electrifying match showing the two men at their best. The DVD also comes with great extras which are also very entertaining. A terrific buy!

Pete Sampras is a fascinating insight into the Wimbledon career of arguably the greatest Men¹s Champion of all-time. This documentary follows the journey of the seven-time winner from his inauspicious debut in 1989 to his record breaking victory in 2000 and his last match at The Championships in 2002. This program features contributions from many of Sampras¹ greatest rivals who themselves were great Wimbledon champions including Boris Becker, Andre Agassi and Goran Ivanisevic. The current champion Roger Federer and the 1996 champion Richard Krajicek recall their respective victories over Sampras with further contributions from Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Martina Hingis, Jim Courier, Tim Henman and Tom Gullikson, brother of Sampras¹ coach Tim.

5 out of 5 stars how soon we forget..........2007-02-22

While Roger Federer may indeed be the best player ever to hold a racket -- and he may break all of Pete Sampras' records -- watching this DVD reminded me of just how great Sampras was. At his best, Sampras was every bit as sublime as Federer; it's just too bad Federer had to come along so soon after Sampras retired.

This DVD is a fitting tribute to Sampras, featuring extensive match footage and interviews with the players who knew him best: Agassi, Courier, Becker, Ivanicevic, Krajicec, Henman -- even Federer pauses to pay tribute to his former idol and predecessor. And just for the record, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, and Martina Hingis put in their two cents as well.

Special features include match statistics and condensed versions of Sampras' first Wimbledon victory over Jim Courier and his last over Patrick Rafter.

Could Sampras have beaten Federer? When he was on, Sampras could beat anyone, and I don't think Federer would argue with this. Meanwhile, champion that he is, Sampras has said repeatedly that he expects Federer to break all of his records, Wimbledon and otherwise.

Dear gentlemen, you may not believe, but that's true: I have not received my DVDs (both bought september 11th, 2006) so far...I'm sure they must be rated 5 stars, considering the magic skills and personality of the players featured on those two DVDs...
I'm really bored and disappointed, and would love to give my oppinion about them, but I can not.

Description

Features one of the most memorable Gentlemen's Singles Final's ever. Few people can provide the kind of match Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter played on Centre Court at the Wimbledon 2000 Semifinal. With two very contrasting styles, the match proved to be a thriller, with excitement, entertainment and the highest quality tennis. Rafter overcame the ageless Agassi in a heart-stopping five sets 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. The Centre Court at Wimbledon has seen some great matches over the last 114 years of tennis at SW19, and has indeed been the very home of tennis excellence. The Agassi vs. Rafter match lifted the standard to almost unattainable levels. Agassi, winner of grand slams on all the four surfaces, had a tough time countering the Australian's masterful volleys and skill at the net. Rafter's confidence and stunning half volleys helped him win the first set 7-5. Agassi fought back and quickly gained strength to break Rafter's serve with some unbelievable returns. As Agassi found his serve, he was able to gain some free points and went on to secure the second set 4-6.As the crowd saw Agassi's game returning, they now waited for the inevitable; the American to power through to take the next set. However, they were made to wait, as Rafter instead broke Agassi's serve to take the third set 7-5. Always the showman, Agassi did not want to disappoint the crowd and again fought back to take the fourth set 4-6. The crowd were now on the edge of their seats not knowing what would be the outcome of this epic Semifinal. With both players taking the court for a showdown in the fifth set, Rafter's power now gave him the edge. He took the last set in 25 minutes to win a place against the masterful Pete Sampras.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Agassi vs. Rafter.......2007-01-31

Except for his two back-to-back U.S. Open victories, Pat Rafter was left holding the plate at Wimbledon finals not once, but twice. This is a semi-final, however, and it shows Rafter at his best. He undoes Agassi at his own relentless baseline game, mixing up spins and speeds, and then delivering the power shot. Rafter would go on to stun Sampras in the first set of the final, but then the rains came. He would not win-- perhaps he was destined never to win at Wimbledon. But, here, for several hours of thrilling tennis, he shows how intelligent and exciting a player he could be. Highly recommended.

Description

An enthralling contest between two great rivals. As Wimbledon began the second century of its illustrious history, the 1978 Ladies Singles Final between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert produced an absorbing match between these two great rivals. There could not have been two more contrasting characters on the court, Navratilova with her fiery temperament, and Evert, the cool "ice maiden". Navratilova burst upon the scene as a highly promising 16 year-old in 1973, and within two years she was ranked No. 2 in the world behind her rival and friend, Chris Evert. And by 1978, Chris was in her prime looking to win her third Wimbledon Singles title. The stage was set for an enthralling contest. Right from the start there was a hint of a classic Final, as Evert set the pace with a confident performance, winning the first set 6-2. In the second set, Navratilova calmed her nerves and fought back to take the set 6-4. Plating tennis of the highest caliber, these champions fought a nail-biting third set as Evert won four games in a row. Navratilova surged back and made a wonderful recovery to win the first of her many Wimbledon titles.

This see-saw battle, which decided the women's singles Wimbledon champion for '78, was a real barn-burner.

Both Evert and Navratilova are on the top of their respective games in this Grand-Slam final, with many of the spectacular shots that come whizzing off the racquets of these two stellar players deserving an instant replay (which is easy to accomplish, thanks to the DVD).

The hard-hitting Czech lefthander, Navratilova, was only 21 years old when this 1978 finals match was played in England. And the Florida-born Miss Evert wasn't much older. Chris was just 23.

These two tennis icons tangled a total of 80 times during their careers, with Martina coming out the victor in 43 of those matches. So, as can be seen by those figures, these two ladies could each hold her own on the court against one another.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the superb video quality I found on this Digital Disc. The footage seen here comes from the BBC-TV archives, and the picture quality is just simply magnificent. Clear as a bell. And for a videotaped source (rather than film), I'd say it looks darn-near pristine. I could almost swear I was watching the match live on TV as it was happening all those many years ago. The colors look accurate and natural, and even far-away background imagery comes out very clear on this disc. The screen ratio is the original television shape of 1.33:1 (Full Frame).

The audio is in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, and it is A-OK as well. Very good in fact. The ever-present sound of the racquet hitting the ball comes through crisp and clean, as do the P.A. announcer's frequent scoring updates. Commentary from the team of BBC-TV broadcasters during the match is quite subdued, and kept to an overall minimum. Of course, tennis commentary during a live match is not supremely important. The camera can tell the viewer what's happening. And does.

This disc, part of "The Wimbledon Video Collection" of DVDs distributed by Kultur International Films of New Jersey, runs for a total of 113 minutes (even though the box says only 102).

There are 5 chapter breaks, including an "Introduction", which serves as a mini bio on both Evert and Navratilova. There are even some contemporary interviews in this Intro section, with Pam Shriver, plus Martina Navratilova's parents, and also Chris Evert herself. Nicely-done stuff to set the stage for the upcoming '78 finals match. Chapter 5 features the Wimbledon trophy presentation and some brief comments by Martina (circa late 1990s).

The single-sided DVD comes packaged in a standard keepcase box. The Main Menu is animated with slow-motion, on-the-court images of Navratilova and Evert. A catchy musical theme plays (on a loop) while the Main Menu is visible on screen. A one-sheet paper insert is included in the case, with a chapter list on one side, and an ad for other Wimbledon DVD titles on the reverse side.

I like the photo of Martina and Chris on the front of the case....although I can't help but wonder why the picture is in black-and-white instead of in color?

Well, anyway, this full-length tennis match is presented in color on this DVD....and it looks splendid. So, if you want to see two classy tennis pros in action, battling for that ultimate Wimbledon #1 prize, then pick up this "Classic Match" on DVD.

Another DVD in the "Wimbledon Collection" that I'd also recommend highly is the 2-Disc set containing the 1980 men's frog-strangler of a final, pitting John McEnroe against Bjorn Borg. That incredible match lasts 4 full hours and is shown uncut on that two-DVD edition put out by Kultur Films.

Description

Wimbledon - The Record Breakers is a powerful, revealing account of some of the most important records to have been achieved at The Wimbledon Championships in the modern era.

In 1985 Boris Becker shocked the world by winning the Men's Singles Final at the age of 17. Becker recalls his magical journey to become the youngest men's champion, the first German and the first unseeded player to win the Men's Singles title. With nine Ladies Singles titles to her name, the naturalized American Martina Navratilova is the most successful woman to have played at Wimbeldon. From her first singles success in 1978 to her last in 1990, Martina recalls her path to record breaking glory. In 1979 Navratilova helped Billie Jean King to achieve a record twenty titles with their success in the Ladies Doubles Final, a feat which Martina herself has now equalled. Navratilova's namesake Martina Hingis from Switzerland became the youngest champion to win the Ladies Doubles title in 1996. Hingis remembers what it was like to achieve that feat and to go on to win the Ladies Singles crown the following year.

With a record seven Men's Singles titles, Pete Sampras is arguably the greatest men's Wimbledon champion of all time. He remembers his first victory against fellow American Jim Courier in 1993 and other classic finals against Boris Becker, his compatriot Andre Agassi and the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic and recalls his record-breaking seventh title victory against the Australian Pat Rafter in 2000. The Swiss sensation Roger Federer is the defending Wimbledon Champion and regarded by many as the heir to Pete Sampras' Wimbledon throne. Federer recalls his dramatic triumph over the seven-time champion in 2001.

Narrated by Geoffrey Palmer and written by Andrew Longmore, Wimbledon - The Record Breakers is a fascinating insight into the minds of some of Wimbledon's greatest champions as they recall their most famous record-breaking triumphs on the hallowed turf of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

This is an interesting review of some of the greatest tennis players who played at Wimbledon and who compiled great records. I would like more tennis and less talking.

4 out of 5 stars Wimbledon rocks.......2005-10-07

A good DVD for tennis buffs. Really about Becker, Navratilova and Sampras. It tells their Wimbledon stories, from beginnings to ends. It tells about their main rivalries, but the only interviews are from those 3 people. It would be nice to have Edberg talk about Boris, to have Chris Evert talk about Martina, and to have Agassi or anyone talk about Sampras. Bud Collins is a person that people either love or hate, but all respect his tennis knowledge, but he isn't on here either. Hard too to omit McEnroe, but this DVD does it. It tries to make a succession pathway from Navratilova to Hingis, but we know that didn't come about. The Navratilova bit is maybe 20 minutes, while the Hingis bit is about 2. Likewise, there was a great succession bit--mainly in interviews with Becker--about the King of Wimbledon going from Becker to Sampras and then to Federrer. At the end is a short piece on Federrer, akin to that of Hingis. Again, would like more interviews!!!
