Description

A rancher, a rustler, and a regulator face off in Arthur Penn's eccentric western. As a cover for their horse thievery, a gang of Montana rustlers, led by the laid-back Tom Logan (Jack Nicholson), buys a small farm adjacent to the ranch of their latest target/nemesis, Braxton (John McLiam). When the gang leaves Tom on the farm and heads to Canada for another score, Tom takes a shine both to farming and Braxton's rebellious, strong-willed daughter, Jane (Kathleen Lloyd). The slightly loco Braxton, however, hires the psychopathic regulator Lee Clayton (Marlon Brando) to root out the rustlers. With a series of unorthodox methods (and costumes), Clayton hunts down Logan and his gang one by one, even after Braxton fires him, but Logan isn't about to let Clayton (or Braxton) make him obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars Best of an the era.......2007-06-08

Cannot beat this little known weatern with Brando and Jack. What a lost treasure! Some truely great lines in this one and perfect Brando style. I have no doubt that both of these actors were just playing themselves. 5 Stars for these guys. What a great memory movie.

4 out of 5 stars Arthur Penn, Brando, Nicholsen, Harry Dean....what more do you want??.......2007-06-01

This is one of the near-great post modern Westerns IMO. (The 2 Great ones being The Wild Bunch--altho is that really post modern?--or the ultimate "classic western"?--& Once Upon a Time in the West.) And we could add "the Last Picture show" to the mix.....but is that really a "western" (it takes place in the 1950's)?

It's got Arthur Penn as director, Brando, Nicholsen, Harry Dean, et al. And the gorgeous brunette Kathleen Lloyd who blatently & with direct language seduces Nicholsen. (Which I love, because I'm a guy).

It imposes a "70's" sensibility on the American Western. And some people may not like that. I think--the best film to compare it to is Altman's "McCabe & Mrs. Miller".

I dig it....any fan of quirky, offbeat films should see it.

5 out of 5 stars Maltin Shmaltin........2007-03-08

Leonard Maltin calls "Missouri Breaks" a BOMB. I think he's looking in the mirror and sees everything backwards. "Missouri Breaks" is a studied, nuanced, greatly acted, directed, scored, designed, and photographed masterwork. It is pure genius from Penn, Brando and Nicholson in carefully shaded characters, and a marvelously talented supporting cast headed by Harry Dean Stanton and Kathleen Loyd. There are no false steps.

The violence Maltin decries is sudden, graphic, and realistic. It shows the brutal nature of the frontier American experience directly, without moral or relish. If anything, it is sincere reportage, which may be what Maltin really finds objectionable; we do like our pretty myths. Students of American western frontier history will instantly recognize the authenticity of setting, society, and events.

He calls it "plodding." It's about a bunch of lazy no-count horse thieves, who are at bottom just human beings with tough beginnings trying to survive in tough conditions. It is a leisured film, but not casual. The viewer enters the world on the screen, to dwell intimately therein as a participant observer, seeing at ground level how these people deal with the events of both a mundane and peculiar life. "Breaks" creates a solid environment with a natural pace that enters the remorseless realm of Greek tragedy. We watch helplessly as the players march relentlessly to an avoidable, but inevitable climax. We see the survivors in the brief still aftermath fumble for new lives, and new beginnings.

If as Maltin says, "Missouri Breaks" is a BOMB, I guess I like this BOMB VERY MUCH. It is a mature, fully realized vision, film as literature that matures like fine wine. Highly recommended for people who think. Leonard?

4 out of 5 stars Broken land, twisted characters.......2007-03-07

Most of the reviews of this film appear to have been written by males, so I thought I would add a female point of view to the discussion.

I bought the DVD for my husband for Valentine's Day, he being a fan of the western genre, and watched it with him. It's not exactly romantic Valentine's Day fare.

Here are a few short observations:

In my opinion, the film should be rated "R," instead of "PG," because of its violent scenes.

There are no good guys in this film, only flawed characters. I found the Marlon Brando character, the amoral regulator, blood-chillingly evil. Compared to him, the bumbling rustlers seem almost to be sympathetic characters. I very nearly found myself rooting for the "bad" guys.

This is not your typical, old-fashioned western. It's a more-interesting film with more-believable characters.

5 out of 5 stars A very satisfying film.......2006-12-30

I haven't seen any other of Arthur Penn's films, but I enjoyed this one as a start. The script is great, as is the acting, epecially Marlon Brando's turn as the eccentric "Regulator" Robert E. Lee Clayton. Jack Nicholson is also pretty good. If you're a fan of westerns, the stars, or even just damn good movies, check this film out.

1 out of 5 stars Good movie -bad DVD production quality.......2007-06-27

I think I own over 1000 DVDs and this is the worst DVD I own.

This is a very interesting story from world war II. The movie tells of extreme heroism from all those involved in stopping the Germans from developing their nuclear capability. However, I can not recommend this DVD. The quality is soooo bad. The audio quality is so poor that they automatically put on english subtitles on the screen so you can decipher what the dialogue is.

I do not know who owns the rights to this movie, but it needs to be straighten out. Then hopefully a high quality DVD can be made properly and the story told without static and fuzzy image projection

3 out of 5 stars Heroic War Story in Snow.......2007-05-07

I purchased this DVD thinking the quality would be better in a DVD, than the VHS I had. I was very disappointed in the quality, although the story was an adventure to behold. The bravery of these men in World War 2 to stop the manufacture of hard water to prevent Germany from making the Atom Bomb was awe-inspiring. However, I felt the love story between Kirk Douglas and his ex-wife in the movie, was a distraction we didn't need and almost took away the heroic aspect of the movie. All in all a worthy effort. Richard Harris and Michael Redgrave were very good in their parts also.

1 out of 5 stars One of my favorite MOvies Worst DVD I have.......2007-03-14

You know Great cast, great movie But, I think if I had a good VHS copy I could do a better job transfering it to disk. Picture and sound quality are terrible. it looks like some went into a movie threater with a camera and microphone. really a disapointment. I think amazon should ban this distributor.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT.......2007-03-13

I viewed this movie when I was young when it first came out and was overjoyed to see it was available on DVD. I received it today and I am very, very, very diappointed. It was made in Malasia by the chinese I think, and it looks terrible, like a bad quality VHS. It was likely copied from something, and I am surprised Amazon would carry something like this. I will be sending it back!

1 out of 5 stars great film inferior quality........2007-03-01

one of a number of superior war films. excellent cast, based on a true event.this film is let down by a very poor sound track [muffled] and poor picture quality. it appears to be taken directly from a vhs tape.i will be returning the dvd and wait until a reputable production company produces a quality product. i suggest you do the same.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not enought Chemicals,Brother.......2006-03-27

very boring inane methodical beat that goes on and on and on and on and on and on the "songs, tunes" do not develop its the same beat on and on and on....... visuals are boring if you like good visuals and great pounding progressive rave like music the best is MOby Live (the Remix part of the dvd which goes for about an hour ) or Underworld LIve all the rest from this field that I have (unfortunately) purchased ,like FatBoy and the like,to be honest suck

5 out of 5 stars The Private Psychedelic Masterpiece 93-03.......2004-10-13

The main thing I appreciated about this DVD were the promos. Each promo makes you respect that song more in so many different ways. Unlike Moby's PLAY DVD, The Chem. Bros. give each video a kind of adventure or purpose while keeping you motivated through every beat. My personal favorites were 'Block Rockin' Beats' with these two people on the run from the police apparently, getting caught in the end, while on their journey, run into Tom and Ed in a sort of club. 'Star Guitar' was absolutely impressive with a view from outside the window of a train as everything that passed you (bridge, pole, etc...) represented each beat and rythem...you must look carefully, otherwise you might not understand the video in general. My other favorites include Out Of Control, The Test, and Setting Sun promos ('Life Is Sweet' creeps me out even to this day). The LIVE cuts are another KEY part of this DVD collection. Even when you sit at home on your couch or in your room doddling on your computer, the LIVE cuts can still make you feel like you are very much there with the strobing lights and scratched/mixed up beats through Hey Boy Hey Girl, Hoops/Setting Sun, and the other cuts. It was interesting to watch The Private Reels on the DVD as Tom and Ed go around the world and ask random people if they've ever heard of The Chemical Brothers. Some of these people had no clue what they were talking about which was humorous. Most of them on there (teens) knew their older works when they were known as The Dust Brothers, which I can't say too much about because I've never heard any of their older works of music. The interviews are worth a listen as well as they go through all, if not all, the guests that appeared in the songs. You have Tim Burgess (Life Is Sweet), Noel Gallagher (Setting Sun), and I believe Beth Orton (Alive Alone, Where Do I Begin, The State We're In) was in there as well, I'll have to double-check that one. This DVD is one of a kind and will serve all the Chem. fans out there well.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary DVD of music videos.......2004-09-02

I'll start off by saying that I'm a big fan of music video DVDs in general. Chemical Brothers videos are larger than life. Several of these videos zip you away into a sense of peace and tranquility, leaving you amazed. The two stand-out videos have got to be "Star Guitar" and "The Test". I've watched both of these videos several times, and am still astonished every time I watch them.

For the video "Star Guitar", they just shot footage from the side of a train. Everything they pass, whether it be: trees, buildings, bridges, poles, walls... is cut perfectly to the beat, rhythm and melody. That video must have taken forever to make. "The Test" is very simular; with a lot of on-beat video making.

Not only are the videos awesome, but the live concert footage is sweet too; maybe even better than the videos. The light show they put on is just sick. This DVD is must see for... anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Another 5-Star Review.......2004-07-13

I just wanted to add something to all the other 5-star
reviews of this excellent DVD...and that is...how amazing
the live material is. Sure the videos are good, but it's
the live section of this DVD that really (to use a cliche)
blows you away. The live songs are masterpieces of beat-genius,
with each song delivering extremely satisfying build-ups and
climaxes...all are mesmerizing...all have less vocals than the
single versions...all are stretched out with BIG SUB-WOOFER
sound! It almost seems like...if Beethoven and Mozart were alive
today, they'd be these two Chemical Brothers exhibiting their
musical chops to live & raving audiences. So anyway, if you
buy this DVD, I recommend that you go immediately to the live
section. It's truly thrilling.

5 out of 5 stars LONG TIME COMING.......2003-10-16

Chemical Brothers fans have long awaited a video/live dvd from the masters and I would say it's been worth the wait. What an awesomely put together dvd. Even the menus are class. Having been at the red rocks show, I admired how its footage perfectly captures the mayhem that ensued after the blistering opener hey boy, hey girl. And as for the other live bits, they're worth the price of admission alone, especially the Japan footage, simply jaw-dropping. But you also get the promos and interviews which only add to the future classic status of this dvd. Some of the best videos of the last ten years of course line up to show the Chem's might. 'The Test' is an instant classic with amazing visuals, and 'The Golden Path' is a very positive and uplifting piece of genius as a video and track. Excellent DVD.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very cool. Always coming back for replays........2006-09-14

I keep finding myself putting this DVD back in over and over just to watch one of the funny and inspiring videos in this collection. Granted, several of them aren't worth the time wasted to watch to begin with (just to hear the music, which was the initial purpose of his videos IIRC), but several of them are just too good to watch once. Ones that come to mind are Ya Mama (for a GREAT laugh every time), Weapon of Choice, Demons, and Slash Dot Dash (need a wake up call?). Each are very well made and go with the music beautifully. I constantly come back to these videos more than ANY OTHER VIDEO I've ever seen.

Others, like Praise You, The Joker, Gangster Trippin', and borderline "That Old Pair of Jeans" took a great song and glued an awkward, goofy music "video" onto it. Praise You was almost embarassing. The Joker... well, contest winner, okay, that's acceptable. But Gangster Trippin'? Watch it once, okay, that's all you need. "That old pair of jeans" is a great song with great juggling (AMAZING, I might add), but what's the association?

Hey, there's more on this DVD than just the videos though. There's a documentary on the videos, which is an entertaining insight into the making of the videos, as well as a sneak peek into what Fatboy Slim does for a living - putting on HUGE shows. Quite the awesome sight for those of us not lucky enough to be able to see one in person. ;-)

It's still a great DVD despite its shortcomings. If you get the "Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder?" CD, get this DVD. And vice versa. They go great together!

    3 out of 5 stars A Little Let Down.......2006-08-19

Christopher Walken video is ok as well as 'Praise Me'.
    That's about it.

4 out of 5 stars Oh man, the previous reviewer is correct..........2006-08-19

WHERE THA HECK IS THA "PLAY ALL" OPTION ON THIS THING??? I was enjoying the first video until i realized it wouldn't automatically segway into the next video! And the picture quality on some of the videos is appalling.

Other than those problems, you still get great music, some great videos, and some good extras at a good price. Just don't expect to be playing this disc in the background at your next party or get-together(unless you plan on just sitting there with the remote ready to switch to the next video).

    2 out of 5 stars little effort.......2006-08-10

it is interesting - but....it would appear little effort has been put in to make this a must-get DVD. The video is as per original ie not digitally enhanced and the audio is AC3-2 channel. Having put up with that - you have to then accept that there is no 'play all' option for the videos. After each vidoe finishes, you are directed back to the menu screen to choose the next video. This is all far too manual and very annoying. Surely a little bit more effort could be put into this DVD to make it worthwhile.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Surprising!.......2006-07-23

I always knew I would buy this DVD when it finally came out, but its so much more than I was expecting. I'm a pretty big fan and many things were still new to me! Lots of extras too! And where else can you get these videos? Two videos on this were voted greatest video of all time by vh1 and mtv. And its historical...although I was a little disappointed they didn't get spike jonze on the documentary, over all I was very impressed with it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!

All For One! One For All!

Alexandre Dumas' timeless tale of epic adventure and swashbuckling romance comes to life in this classic BBC production starring Brian Blessed, Jeremy Young and Gary Watson. Determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a musketeer, D'Artagnan leaves home with only an old horse and a letter of recommendation to the Captain of the King's Musketeers. Although the letter is stolen, he quickly proves himself worthy and joins the ranks of Athos, Porthos and Aramis. The four become fast friends and band together to protect the King of France from the devious Cardinal Richilieu who plans to overthrow the monarchy.

4 out of 5 stars "We knew him when".......2007-01-05

Compared with some of the grandiose technicolored widescreen versions pf "The Three Musketeers" this 1966 black and white production looks cramped and primitive, but it has virtues of its own: the acting is of excellent quality throughout the cast and the personalities of the musketeers are more sharply defined. What is wryly amusing is that even in the DVD version, Jeremy Brett gets only second billing; his name does not even appear on the front cover of the box! Yet even in this youthful appearance the sensitivity and emotional range of this gifted actor are apparent. For his prtformance alone this set would be worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars "A plague upon these Gascons! They are incorrigible!".......2006-09-08

In 1966, BBC unveiled The Three Musketeers, a television mini-series shown in 10 black & white episodes, each about 24 minutes long. This full-screen dvd release is certainly worth a look for all swashbuckler fans and, specifically, for readers of Alexandre Dumas. I'm not sure how many film adaptations there are out there about the Musketeers. Off the cuff, the versions I remember starred Douglas Fairbanks, Don Ameche (a musical!), Gene Kelly, Michael York (excellent!), and Charlie Sheen. There was even a crappy version a few years ago wherein D'Artagnan's fighting style combined elements of gymnastics and martial arts!

This BBC mini-series sticks pretty closely to Dumas's classic tale of love, honor, and swordplay. In ten chapters, we get to witness the high points of the book: our young Gascon, D'Artagnan, on his way to meet M. Treville in hopes of becoming a Musketeer, initially ruffling the feathers of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and consequently scheduling dueling appointments with them on three successive hours; D'Artagnan meeting and falling in love with Constance, the lovely but married seamstress and confidante of the Queen, who, unwisely but very Frenchlike, engages in secret liaisons with the Duke of Buckingham; D'Artagnan's heroic mission for his queen and his friends' noble sacrifices along the way so that D'Artagnan's mission is successful. And so on...

The cast is comprised of outstanding British actors. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are respectively and vigorously played by Jeremy Young, Brian Blessed, and Gary Watson, who are all very, very good and passionate in their roles - in particular, Jeremy Young, whose tortured character has always stood out in my eyes. Unfortunately, Constance remains a tepid character, much like in the book. The villains are done a good turn by the wickedly good performances of Mary Peach, as the cunning and vindictive Milady de Winter, and of Richard Pasco, who plays Cardinal Richelieu with icy reserve and Machiavellian menace.

But, most of all, we get to experience a D'Artagnan who is disarmingly portrayed by Jeremy Brett. D'Artagnan, in Brett's hands, is earnest, noble, spiritedly idealistic, and fiercely brave. This is a very fine performance by Mr. Brett, who displays the intensity and class arrogance he would later hone to perfection as Sherlock Holmes. But, back in 1966, he was young enough (33 years old then) that he was able to bring zest and youthful energy into his iconic role. When his father advises him to "never fear quarrels, but seek adventures" and to "fight on all occasions," we know Brett is up to the challenge.

Showcasing ferocious, energetic sword fights, ensemble acting done with panache and conviction, and a sincere commitment to do right by Dumas's greatest work, BBC's The Three Musketeers is an honest and true adaptation. With a budget commensurate to television, the production is modest but, nevertheless, admirable. The costumes, the settings, the texturing of the show are all exceedingly done well. No, it doesn't have the tongue in cheek flavor of the 1974 Richard Lester version or the Brat Pack casting of the 1993 offering. What it has, instead, is unassuming charm and loyalty to the spirit of Alexandre Dumas. Of all the Musketeer films I've seen, this one most closely resembles, believe it or not, the 1948 Gene Kelly film in its earnestness.

This series comes in 2 discs, with 5 episodes per disc. Here's the bad news: there are no special features included here. No behind the scenes featurette, no episode commentaries...nothing, nada, zipzoid. Which is why I'm rating the dvd as a four-and-a-half starrer, instead of the full five marks.

A year later, in 1967, BBC treated its audience to a follow up 16-episode serial, The Further Adventures of the Three Musketeers, which showcased Joss Ackland as D'Artagnan. Hopefully, there's a dvd about it in the near future, and with special features.

    Hope this helped.

1 out of 5 stars RIP-OFF!!!! EDITED VERSION OF "SMACK MY BITCH UP" VIDEO!!!!!!.......2006-11-16

Do not buy this DVD if you are expecting the "Smack My Bitch Up" video that was aired only a few times on MTV in the '90s or on MTV2 around 2001 when they had a Controversial Videos countdown. This DVD contains an EDITED version of the video, specifically it is missing a shot of the main character shooting up in a bathroom stall, a shot of the character hitting a pedestrian on the street with a car, and the entire sex scene with the prostitute is toned down. I compared the DVD version with the version that I recorded off of MTV2 and it is DEFINITELY edited.

Why in the world this video would be edited completely escapes me, especially where the DVD cover has a Parental Advisory sticker. But it is misleading the buying public (since I would guess most people would buy this DVD for this infamous video). In any case, I have no idea when the record companies are going to wake up to not selling substandard product, and that contributes more than anything to the bootlegging problem. In any case, send a message to Prodigy, their record company, and whoever else was involved with this mess, buy a bootleg of the video and make sure not a penny goes to Prodigy or their record company. Don't be a sucker like I was and waste your money on this DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars SICK!!!!.......2006-06-30

This has got to be the absolute best DVD for a band EVER!!! Not only do you get all The Prod's video's (even the banned in the US "Smack My [...] Up") but also live concert footage, behind the scenes of their video's production & other goodies. I've got all their albums and most singles already, & I picked up both the best of CD & the DVD, I'm not at all sorry. Worth every penny(though I coulda done without the naked guy running around in the beginning of the live footage... You'll see)the DVD absolutely captures the intensity of the bands raw energy, couldn't ask for a better interpretation. Anyway, don't hesitate if you've ever been a fan of dance music ever, you'll definately love both the CD & DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this film!.......2006-05-28

This is a made for TV movie based on the novel of the same name written by Jonathan Kellerman. Ted Danson is great as Dr. Alex Delaware, but Richard Masur is perfect as Detective Milo Sturgis. I mean, his hair is more red than black and he's a couple inches too short, but still - so perfect.

It follows the book fairly closely and starts with the trial of a notorious pedaphile. Dr. Alex Delaware is the child psychologist assigned to help threat the traumatized victims and when the defendant (out on bail) commits suicide in his office, the whole thing is too much for Alex and he retires.

Retirement is taking it's toll, though - Alex is a mess, so his pal Detective Milo Sturgis figures getting him involved in another case will help get him out of his funk. Well, it works too damned well and he has created a Police Consultant monster as Alex goes off on his own investigating and stepping on toes and making Milo's life a little more
    difficult in the bargain.

It's a nasty tale of big shot perversion and Alex digs deep enough to endanger his own life. Can Milo get to him in time to save him?

The ending is a little different than the book and I haven't decided yet which I like better.

It's a nice little film - I really like the fact that it's not condescending - it doesn't explain everything in neat little sound bytes - you might have to think a little bit on your own to figure everything out, which means you might realize something new each time you watch it. The chemistry between Alex and Milo and between Milo and his lover Rick
    is just too damned cute.

4 out of 5 stars Seven meets Silence of the Lamb!.......2005-10-06

I loved the movie! It was real! It was gritty! It carried me in through to the end!
Ally Walker was so credible with her intriguing personality traits, and yet destinguished research and detective work!
    Beautiful!!
I could watch the movie over and over again, and still find more interesting things in the movie!
The only thing I didn't like was how it ended. Rather abrupt and somewhat inconclusive!

4 out of 5 stars YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH ALLY.......2005-02-04

Ally Walker reminded me of a toned down Charlize Theron in this effectively chilling thriller. Her zesty, controlled and courageous performance highlights this tale of a serial killer who has surgically removed the hands of several young children. The murders occur on the same date, and the victims progress in age over the ten year period. Walker also ties up with a young psychiatric patient who has refused to talk for ten years---she begins to see the connection, as do we the viewer. Martin Sheen has a small role as the sheriff, and Ron Perlman has a small role too near the end, but this is Walker's movie. She comes across tough, yet vulnerable. The plot has some holes: where did Walker get her scars? There is a hint of some kind of emotional trauma, her claustrophobia never being fully explained. And the ending comes rather abruptly without a full explanation of what was going on. Writer/director Michael Cohn makes the viewer put all the pieces together.
But still this is a chilling movie and Walker is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars ALLY WALKER IS A GREAT PROFILER!!!.......2004-08-16

Ally Walker stars as Audrey MacLeah, a profiler from the Texas Rangers helping the Houston Police investigate severed human hands that showed up during a flash-flood. Her lead to the case is a child with psychic abilities locked up in a mental institution. The story also has a sub-plot on how the local police resent MacLeah for being a State Law Enforcer helping them solve the case.

Although the movie has some flaws, it is still a very good suspense thriller & Ally Walker's acting is terrific. The movie was released in 1993. It's a good thing that it will be released in DVD format.

Interestingly though, Ally Walker later went on to star in the TV series "Profiler" (she played a profiler/forensic psychologist working for the FBI) from 1996 to 1999.

2 out of 5 stars 'Silence of the Lambs', it's not.......2003-07-14

I watched "When the Bough Breaks" last night as an uncut, no commercials, cable TV movie.

Up front, to give the movie credit, it was entertaining enough. No boredom. Just nagging thoughts.

Too early in the movie, the parallels to "Silence of the Lambs" become very apparent. That started with the isolated underground captivity of the key informant/psych patient and continued all the way through the confrontation with the villain in the basement.

But even before that comes the nagging impression that police department had simply not done a competent investigation. Does it really take a profiler from the state to see all these July 16 connections?

Then comes the prosecutor's nightmare. Ali simply breaks into the house without a search warrant. With all the things she sees, there goes any hope of a conviction. And this is a trained law enforcement officer?

Does a trained law enforcement officer go into as dangerous an environment as that basement without notifying a dispatcher and asking for some backup? Of course, having backup arrive from two miles away would have ruined the climax of the film.

    And so many loose ends....

--The predominace of smoking, even extending to the child patient.
--Unexplained scratch-mauling of the profiler's back.
--The disappearance of the police captain in the middle of the plot.
--The ability of a cop to so effectively hypnotize an autistic child.
--The question of the patient's Jordan/Jennifer identity and reason for the wrist markings when the identity of the other twin seems so apparent.

None of these mar the film's entertainment value. It's only afterwards that one feels diminished by a badly written screenplay.
