Alternative history and whimsical imagination make comfortable bedfellows in The Emperor's New Clothes. As happens in Simon Leys's novel The Death of Napoleon, the French emperor's demise is faked as part of a political comeback scheme, and Ian Holm--who had previously played Bonaparte in Time Bandits and a 1974 British miniseries--plays both Napoleon and the look-alike who "dies" on the island of St. Helena. En route to Paris to stage his miraculous "resurrection," Napoleon inadvertently finds happiness in Antwerp with an incredulous widow (High Fidelity's Iben Hjejle) while the look-alike--now comfortable with his pampered captivity--refuses to reveal his true identity! As directed by Alan Taylor, this delightful comedy is played at a perfect low-key pitch, favoring the subtleties of Holm's performance, which is every bit as clever as his Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings. Little-seen in theatrical release, this acclaimed gem deserves a long life on DVD. --Jeff Shannon

Part of Cannon's Movietale series, The Emperor's New Clothes is a frenetic musical take on Hans Christian Andersen's fable. The good news is that Sid Caesar makes for an entertaining Emperor. The bad news is that the incessant slapstick grows tiresome, though the tunes, like "Clothes Make the Man" ("Change 'em every hour/that's how a politician stays in power") aren't bad. In David Irving's adaptation, Caesar's Emperor insists on wearing only the "most beautiful, most exquisite" outfits. When he meets tailor Henry Dispenser (two-time Tony winner Robert Morse) and his assistant, Nicholas (Babylon 5's Jason Carter), who offer to make him a suit stitched with diamond thread, he showers them with jewels. In return, the con men give him, well, nothing. Only the smart, they explain, can see their fantastic creations. Since the Emperor's minions don't wish to seem stupid, they praise his fleshy resplendence. Naturally, the Emperor discovers the awful truth--not only has he been had, but he looks like an idiot. Irving is also behind Cannon's Sleeping Beauty and Rumpelstiltskin (starring his sister, Amy Irving). Not too surprisingly, The Emperor's New Clothes feels like it was churned out fairly quickly, but the crazy costumes are a hoot. Most would give fashion critic Mr. Blackwell conniptions, but their garishness is what makes them amusing. This Movietale installment is fine for families, but more mature viewers would be better off with the Emperor's edition of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale gets a lavish makeover in this whimsical live-action comedy starring showbiz legend Sid Caesar (Grease), who plays the eccentric Emperor with his "trademark foreign language gibberish and nervous delivery" (Variety). Full of mischief, merriment and mayhem, this delightful twist on a beloved story weaves a hilarious family adventure you wont soon forget! The Emperor's blinding vanity makes him an easy mark for con artists, especially the two phony tailors hired to make him a dazzling outfit for his daughter Gilda's (Lysette Anthony) wedding. While the elder crook (Robert Morse) schemes to steal the royal jewels, his nephew (Jason Carter) is busy stealing Gilda's heart. In the midst of it all, it takes a child to reveal the truth that no one else can see!

this movie is really cute but not my favorite movie in the series of cannon movie tales. the songs are ok. I like "is this a love song". But as in all the cannon move tales the costumes and sets are very lavish and beautiful! I'm so happy to have the whole series on vhs and dvd

1 out of 5 stars That Thumping Sound You Hear is Hans Christian Anderson Rolling in His Grave.......2006-04-12

Years ago, Shelley Duvall's "Fairy Tale Theater" presented a charming version of "The Emperor's New Clothes." There were no subplots involving a princess with the con artists, no strange sound effects and, best of all, no songs! It was adorable.

The same cannot be said for this unfortunate waste of DVD discs. Who were they trying to market this for? There are double entendre jokes clearly aimed at adults that fall flatter than Sid Caesar's delivery. There are "funny" sound effects to indicate what the guards are doing and this is supposed to make it cartoony and therefore of interest to children. Not.

The acting is consistently charmless, leaden, and mean. What were the actors caught in this nightmare thinking? I've seen children's theater where broad gestures and expressions are necessary. The broad acting here only points up how horribly bad the whole is.

Because the source material is SO slim, a whole ghastly subplot about the princess, an unsuitable prince, a young con artist and the inevitable love triangle has been plastered on--and it doesn't improve the original. The ugly prince was not funny, he was revolting. The young lovers were ridiculously overwrought and...and...and it was all so unnecessary.

And then there are the songs! Bad rhymes strung together and set to insipid, sugary tunes. Slapping one's hands over one's ears is the best reaction and protection from this kind of musical abuse. There is nothing clever in the tunes or the lyrics...they are simply painful.

There were opportunities for originality: the emperor might have found the whole situation amusing, might have learned a lesson, might have become a whole character. Perhaps the ugly prince might have realized what a bad match it was...or maybe he could have been, at least, nerdish and smart, instead of being played as a mentally challenged freak.

But no, the creators went for the lowest common denominator and what they thought would be easy laughs. (There is nothing easy about the humor here--it is nonexistent.) There are simply not enough words to describe the badness of it. Save yourself and your children and purchase the Fairy Tale Theater version or something (anything)else instead. One star shown only because there are no negative one hundred stars.

5 out of 5 stars Cannon Movie Tales Finally on DVD!.......2005-06-06

Sid Caesar stars as The Emperor in this Cannon Movie Tales musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale.

Here's the movie's description available from Sony Pictures: "Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale gets a lavish makeover in this whimsical live-action comedy starring showbiz legend Sid Caesar (Grease), who plays the eccentric Emperor with his "trademark foreign language gibberish and nervous delivery" (Variety). Full of mischief, merriment and mayhem, this delightful twist on a beloved story weaves a hilarious family adventure you won't soon forget!

In the midst of it all, it takes a child to reveal the truth that no one else can see!"

The Cannon Movie Tale series of nine films has become nearly as popular among fairy tale enthusiasts and family film fans as Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Some would argue that this series is even more popular. Either way, these musicals are suitable for the entire family and feature well-known actors from the 1980s.

This collection of animated shorts (based on four of Hans Christian Andersen's much-loved fairy tales) offers a variety of visual styles. The Emperor's New Clothes is cartoonish, colorful, and accompanied by a jaunty soundtrack, all of which well serves the classic story: Two swindlers persuade a foolish king that their magical cloth can't be seen by the foolish and incompetent--so of course everyone pretends to be able to see it. The Ugly Duckling, about a duckling spurned by his family for being too different, isn't so much animated as illustrated; the mostly still pictures are lovely, but some children may find this approach a little dull. The Swineherd, a lesser-known story about a prince who disguises himself as a peasant to woo a vain princess, has a look that mixes Marc Chagall and medieval tapestries. The final story, Nightingale, uses gorgeous Japanese watercolors and simple but elegant line drawings to tell the story of an arrogant emperor who learns to value the sweet song a nightingale. All in all, a satisfying selection, sure to please young children and older Andersen fans. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars More whimsical than biting, but extremely likeable.......2006-12-25

The Emperor's New Clothes got lost in the shuffle when FilmFour went to the wall, sitting on the shelf for a couple of years before a negligible release. Like the film itself, the premise had been around for years - Winston Churchill once pitched a variation to Charlie Chaplin - although it took decades to reach the screen: Napoleon never actually died on St Helena but escaped, leaving a double behind. Unfortunately the Emperor's plans to return to power were rather cut short by the double being unwilling to give up his cushy life on the island and own up to his true identity, and then compounding his sin by keeling over and dying, leaving the real Napoleon adrift in a Paris where nobody believes him and the asylums are full of people who think they're Napoleon. Alan Taylor's film never quite makes enough of its premise and the last act is a little scruffy around the edges as Ian Holm's little Emperor finds himself settling down with Iben Hjejle's widowed fruit seller, planning her street sales campaign with military precision, but it's a pleasing little number that gets by on wistful charm rather than biting satire. It never quite comes to grips with France's divided attitude to Napoleon's legacy - part dictator, part liberator - although it takes some nice digs at the post-Napoleonic tourist trade as Waterloo becomes a tourist trap filled with souvenir sellers and inns where Napoleon slept ("I've never set foot in this place in my life," notes Napoleon before dozing off on a bed under a `Napoleon slept here' sign). Extremely likeable.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-11-15

Another softer side of Napolean? This movie is well-plotted and delightful. We're given another story, besides the one in the history books, where Napolean trades places with a look alike so he can return to France and once again rule as emporer. The only trouble is Napolean's double doesn't want to fess up to being the fake! Napolean's madly driven ego begins to get nibbled away by love. When he's shown some harsh results of his rule, he must also question whether or not he is the best thing for France, or if they even desire for him to come back. Great movie!

5 out of 5 stars The wonderfully whimsical and "true" story of the death of Napoleon.......2006-07-01

I put off watching "The Emperor's New Clothes" for a while because the cover art for the DVD made me think that this was going to be something of a silly comedy. We see Ian Holm as Napoleon Bonaparte, decked out in his standard military outfit, with the lipstick imprint of a kiss on his cheek. Consequently I was expecting something a bit zany, with Holm mugging for the camera and the usual sort of hilarity that goes on when people trade identities in movies. Boy, was I wrong.

The screenplay by director Alan Taylor (who directs a lot of series on HBO) and his co-writers Kevin Molony ("Sylvester") and Herbie Wave ("The Closer You Get") is based on the novel "The Death of Napoleon" by Simon Leys. The premise is deceptively simple: while exiled on the island of St. Helena, Napoleon switched places with Eugene Lenormand, a simple sailor who looked like the deposed Emperor of France. While Lenormand pretended to be Napoleon, the man himself would sail in Lenormand's place on the ship, return to France, contact loyal men who would get him to Paris, and take control of the nation once again from the Borbons. However, a couple of problems develop. The first is that Napoleon is deposited not in France, but Belgium, while the other is that Lenormand likes being Napoleon in exile and refuses to admit he is an imposter.

Napoleon makes his way by coach to Paris, and because he starts in Brussels he ends up at a stop in Waterloo, where the curious come to see the famous battlefield and buy mementoes of the Emperor's defeat. "They've changed my battlefield," Napoleon says, but that is not all that has changed since then. Falling asleep in a bed beneath a sign that is now true if it was not before, he has been left behind by the carriage and is waited on by barmaid, Adele Raffin (Hayley Carmichael). He becomes aware that she is nice to him, not because of who he is as the Emperor but because of who SHE is as a person. Napoleon has the good grace to thank her for being kind to him and suggest for the first time that he rertains some aspect of humanity.

What follows is that Napoleon reaches Paris and discovers his contact has died, leaving a widow, named Nicole Truchaut (Iben Hjejle), but called "Pumpkin," and a son. With no where else to go for the moment, Napoleon stays with the family and suddenly becomes aware that the family has lost all of its possessions because they are unable to pay for the melons that have been delivered. Napoleon, a man who can be killed but not insulted, has larger concerns, but the next thing he knows he is addressing the melon merchants on how to take advantage of the hot weather to sell their crop. He has tacked maps up on the wall and addresses them like they are troops in his army. The locals are totally captivated and launch his plan into action, while Napoleon is unaware that he has started down a different road from the path of glory he had planned.

Holm has played Napoleon twice before, in "Time Bandits" and a television mini-series called "Napoleon and Love," so there is that experience as well as his acknowledged acting talent that contribute to this wonderfully measured performance. You might think that caricature of Napoleon Bonaparte is inevitable, but Holm will persuade you otherwise. Hjejle plays a woman who is grounded in the life she is being forced to live and who refuses to let any delusions that the man sharing her bed is the Emperor Napoleon get in the way of the better life she glimpses for herself and her son. But she has spurned the advances of Dr. Lambert (Tim McInnerny), who is more than suspicious about the man who calls himself Eugene Lenormand, even though the papers have announced the death of Napoleon in exile.

I rounded up on this 2001 movie for two reasons. The first is that I loved the way it walks the fine line dictated by the film's story. Being whimsical is rather difficult because it is a delicate affair and "The Emperor's New Clothes" manages it, largely because of the performances by Holm. Neither of his characters goes off the deep end, although both are often positioned to do so. My second reason is that there when Napoleon tries to get his identity acknowledged by the one person in Paris who knows he is telling the truth there is a scene that I should have seen coming and did not. I was so intent on going along for the ride in this one that despite being well aware that Napoleon returned to power from Elba but not St. Helena that I was not anticipating how this story would play out. I thought that maybe my lowered expectations were making this film seem better than it was, but I watched it a second time paying attention to how things were set up and it is that good of a film.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsy better than realism on this topic.......2006-01-21

I've been on a Napoleon kick lately. It started when I read the first five of the "Sharpe's Rifles" novels. Then I realized the Peninsular campaign, of which the British are so proud, was barely even a sideshow in the Napoleonic wars, and that I didn't know anything about the main events. So I started reading and watching.

I've recently seen this film and a French film, called "Monsieur N.", which shares the same premise, namely that Napoleon switched places with a double and slipped away from his captivity on St. Helena. But "Monsieur N." was joyless, grim, and depressing, whereas this film is a joy and a pleasure. At times broadly comic, at other times remarkably insightful, the film is always whimsical and never forgets that it is essentially a fantasy. The French "Monsieur N.", by contrast, takes its premise seriously and thus is about as much fun (and about as grimly conspiratorial) as Oliver Stone's "JFK."

There are many moments of hilarity in this film, but it takes an interesting, serious turn when examining how a person like Napoleon would react when his plan to regain the throne explodes. Not only that, but people believe he is crazy when he claims to be Napoleon. It is easy to imagine him reacting just as depicted here.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet and funny... if not a bit slow.......2004-03-14

It's hard to believe that a movie about Napoleon would feature a very thoughtful, character-driven plot, but this movie does and it does so quite beautifully.

Having never read the book of the same name, I initially expected a grand tale of Napoleon's return to glory. Soon, however, I saw that would not be the case. Throughout, the movie teases with the prospect of Napoleon's return to glory, and, at times, the slower times anywaym, I found myself hoping for such a turn. The actual plot, however, was much sweeter with many very amusing moments.

The story itself, along with the vast majority of the acting, is fabulous. However, like many "small stories," the film drags at times. Try not to let that spoil your enjoyment and you'll find yourself watching a sweet and funny movie.

2 out of 5 stars Memories of Danny Kaye.......2006-12-04

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this DVD having played the tape of Hans Christian Anderson many times to my children when they were growing up, the theme tune went around & around in my head for days. I couldn't wait to play it when it arrived but to my disapointment the theme tune had been changed to something else, while it is still nice to see Danny Kaye I'm afraid to me it was just not what I wanted to hear.

5 out of 5 stars The Incredible Versatility of Danny Kaye.......2006-03-22

My daughters and I just LOVE Danny Kaye. We have seen all of his movies and the favorite is "The Court Jester". My girls and I also love "Peter Cotton Tail" told and sung by Danny Kaye and we just discovered "The Emperor's New Clothes". What a delight for all ages. Danny Kaye is one of the most talented and versatile musical comedy actors that ever lived. Share this and all of the other Danny Kaye movies with your children. You will laugh till your sides ache!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo, for the release of this obscure Rankin/Bass gem!.......2005-03-29

What ever made this show get released on DVD prior to all the other more popular Rankin/Bass specials is beyond me, but I am quite pleased to see it, nonetheless! I don't even think this was ever out on video, so it's here first in all DVD splendor.

Nice to see Danny Kaye in Denmark with all the kids. My son loves the animagic the most, but has no trouble paying attention to Danny and all the kids having a grand ole time in great Danish settings. It's a shame the rest of the Danny Kaye series never materialized as they invisioned it.

3 out of 5 stars The Enchanted World of Danny Kaye.......2003-01-09

Lacking the charm of the classic Rankin/Bass Holiday specials, "The Enchanted World of Danny Kaye: The Emperor's New Clothes" is still good fun to watch and has some really great animagic action in it, including perhaps the only fully nude animagic puppet ever made.

The mix of live action and animagic is not great, and the special would have been better as a pure animagic feature, but it was meant to launch a series of specials with Danny Kaye supplying the star power and Rankin/Bass providing the magic. Unlike the Holiday specials, this one is dated by the live action. Danny Kaye is awfully "70's." However, this is a small complaint as the special is maybe 90% animagic with only a few lead-ins by Danny Kaye. The animagic portion is charming and Romeo Muller did a great take on the traditional Hans Christian Anderson story. Imogene Coca is the voice of the flighty Princess Jane Klockenlocher, and makes for a good romantic foil for Danny Kaye's tailor. The nude Emperor's stroll through town makes this story.

The big problem with this DVD is its lack of punch. Ringing in at just under an hour, "The Enchanted World of Danny Kaye: The Emperor's New Clothes" is not enough feature to carry an entire DVD on its own. There is a short 6-minute making of documentary, which is interesting. Paired with Danny Kaye's other Rankin/Bass outing, "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" would have made for a great DVD. As an extra feature to a DVD of Rankin/Bass's other Hans Christian Anderson feature "The Daydreamer" would have been even better. As it is, probably my least favorite Rankin/Bass DVD.

5 out of 5 stars This is a RANKIN/BASS Special Special!.......2002-12-06

What a GREAT find! Seeing this RARE 'ANIMAGIC' Special in DVD format is beyond words and that MAKING OF documentary is really something! With it being a RAREly seen special, my hat goes off to CLASSIC MEDIA for issueing it for all the RANKIN/BASS fans to enjoy! DANNY KAYE is wonderful in this special and glad he did another special for RANKIN/BASS besides the wonderful HERE COMES PETER COTTONTAIL! Some GREAT music in here too! You can't lose!

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars fine entry in the series.......2004-10-08

THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES is an altogether fine entry in the FAERIE TALE THEATRE series.

Alan Arkin and Art Carney stars as the con-artists who fool a vain and ruthless Emperor (Dick Shawn) into believing that they can create the most exquisite of clothes that are invisible to those who are foolish or unworthy. Legendary British songstress Georgia Brown co-stars as a wise innkeeper.
