Based on a flop Broadway play, this film was made for Showtime but given a theatrical release, with not much more success than the stage version. Still, it's an intriguing idea, even if the dramaturgy tends toward the didactic. The jumping-off point here is the scientific discovery that homosexuality is genetic--and that the gene can be detected in prenatal testing. This disrupts the Gold family, where Dad (Garry Marshall) barely tolerates the homosexuality of his son (Brendan Fraser). When pregnant daughter Jennifer Beals, who is married to a geneticist (Jon Tenney), has the test and discovers that her fetus will be gay, she triggers a family debate that pits parents (including mom Faye Dunaway) against son, raising the question of whether they would have aborted Fraser if they'd known he would be gay. Good acting can't overcome heavy-handed dialogue, though Fraser and Marshall are particularly good. --Marshall Fine

"The Twilight of the Golds" (Genius Entertainment) is controversial by its very nature. It is the story of a young couple who discover through genetic testing that their soon to be born child will be gay. Sounds preposterous, does it not? So does the film seem to be until you watch it. Boasting an all star cast, this original Showtime movie stats Gerry Marshall, Faye Dunaway, Brendan Fraser, Jennifer Beales and Rosie O'Donnell, it will have you thinking long after you finish viewing it.
The movie opens at a happy family party at the soon to be grandparent's home (Marshall and Dunaway). Suzanne Stein (Jennifer Beals) and her husband Rob have a secret which they can't wait to tell but the peaceful evening get together is broken by the animosity the parents show toward their gay son, David (Fraser). When he remarks that his lover sends his regards and remarks that he would have come had he been invited. It is here that we see how deep homophobia runs in the family.
Mixing high drama with comedy, we allow ourselves to relax only to be jolted back into reality later in the film. David's father tells hi, that he thinks his son is sick and diseased (because he is gay) and that had they known he was gay before birth, they would have had him aborted. What is so hard to see in this film is the plausibility (or lack of) in the subject matter. Even an assumption that there is a test to show signs of homosexuality before birth seems a tad ridiculous.
The whole idea behind the film is both fascinating and disgusting at the same time. If indeed it will be possible, sometime in the future, to know the sexuality of an unborn child. I wonder what we have to gain from that. What does that do to the color scheme for boys and girls? Will we adopt anew color for gay children? It seems ridiculous but as foolish as it seems, good acting makes it extremely interesting.
Jennifer Beals puts in am amazing performance as Suzanne Gold, a woman who has a very difficult decision to make. The main problem I had with the movie, and mind you all, I liked the film very much, is whether the movie is really about the son, David or the unborn baby. We feel David's pain and anguish over his family's non-acceptance of him. But what about Suzanne and Rob--are they willing to have a baby that will turn out like David? If he is indeed gay, will they be able to love him or should they just abort him and save him a life f pain? When David realizes that the only reason that his parents grant him the iota of acceptance that they do because they know they cannot change him, he is crushed but manages to hold himself together. But when he learns that if they could have prevented his birth altogether, they would have, he becomes distraught. Suzanne adores her brother but is she willing to have a child like him?
The subject matter is incendiary. What if we could know about the sexuality of a child before birth? Would we want to know? Today it is not so bad but imagine this issue twenty years ago or in a place where homosexuality is punishable by death.
Should Suzanne and Rob bring a child into the world after having seen the way David had been treated?-especially by Suzanne's own parents. David is the center of the film and eventually it is he who shapes and helps his sister make her final decision. This movie gets excessively heavy in the second half but even with that heaviness, I found so much to like here. It did what few movies do these days--it made me think and even though I will never be in a position that is similar to the one presented here, it made me wonder what I would do if I were.

Good movie...but...........2006-10-15

This movie was based on a play by the same name, and although there are some very real "conflicts" the characters go through in the movie, this version changed very much the end of the movie that was far more powerful in the play version. I encourage anyone who thought this movie was at all thought provoking to see the play it was based on. It will tear your heart out and it's a real tear-jerker. Most of all, it will make you think.

anyone that is gay needs to see this movie. i have been hearing about this [so-called] genetic test for a long time. i am also sure it is not yet available. i really don't know if its in the works. if it is, there is trouble a- brewin. this is a really good movie inspite of the subject matter. genetic testing to see if the child will be gay is a really bad idea. the number of gays in the world is popularly said to be around 10%, with some drs. saying it is more likely 10-20%, which seems to be a little more accurate in my mind. brendan fraser has always been one of my favorite actors. the movie "gods and monsters" is truly one of the film greats. i had heard of it as a play but the movie was new to me. the acting, especially by jennifer beals is outstanding. where has she been. haven't seen her for a very long time. garry marshall who is more well known as the brother of penny marshall of laverne and shirley also does an outstanding job.. he is also better known as a director. to me this is a great movie with a stellar cast. faye dunaway is good in anything. with jack clugman and rosie o'donnell in small but pivotal roles, it pretty much rounds out the movie except for sean [something] who plays brendan's lover and who is wonderful in that role. it is so easy for someone like him to overplay the role but he didn't. don't kid yourself, this genetic test is coming and will be welcomed with open arms by a lot of people who are straight. as i said in the beginning, if you are gay, you need to see this movie and also if you are very much the liberal.

A fantastic, outstanding film!! did I mention it's good?.......2003-10-18

The other reviews describe the story line and what I would have to say beyond the basics is how fantastic every aspect of this film is. The acting in top quality, the production quality is excellant and the story is magnificent. It was refreshing to see a movie that is not about HIV, coming out, sexual over activity or hiding who you are. The gay rolls are played with confidence and honor. A top quality roll model for expanding the concepts of what it is to be gay. I give this film the highest marks and strongly recommend it to everyone!! Oscar quality 100% in my humble opinion.

Thought provoking.......2003-09-24

I thought this movie was very well acted. It dealt with some very touchy issues for most people. When David, played by Brendan Fraser, finds out his sister is carrying a baby who will probably be gay it leaves him questioning his own homosexuality. After asking his parents what they would have done if they had know he was gay and getting a very hurtful response he cuts off all ties with them and his sister.
It poses the question, "does my life have meaning?". Also the issues of genetic testing are explored as well as abortion.
