Congratulations to director Paul Weiland for taking a stupid premise and creating a truly romantic look at marriage. Mercedes Ruehl is dying of a weak heart, and her husband, Jean Reno, hopes to keep his promise to bury her in their tiny Italian village, despite a lack of room in the cemetery. While he is trying to keep his friends and neighbors out of the local bone yard, she is quietly seeking candidates for his next wife. Many movies treat marriage as a death sentence. For Roseanna looks past daily bickering to the enduring love and warm companionship of well-matched lovers. Clearly defined characters, a disarming dénouement, and passionate performances transform the silly plot into a playful valentine. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Great Movie! Even my husband thought this one was a keeper! Laughing one minute, teary eyed the next.

Nothing I write can relate as much as this simple statement:

For Roseanna - looks past daily bickering to the enduring love and warm companionship of well-matched lovers.

A must have movie!

This movie is delightful! The storyline is unique, funny, and a bit suspenseful! The actors are marvelous. Both men and women will enjoy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed...I cried...and laughed again.......2006-04-25

I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful little gem of a romantic comedy. The actors were very good, especially Jean Reno as Marcello and Mercedes Ruehl as Roseanna. They were a perfect match and believable as a happily married couple (they even argued lovingly, if you can believe that). One of the reviewers couldn't understand why everyone spoke English everywhere except in the cemetary. I am not remotely fluent in Italian, but I think the Catholic priest was speaking Latin during the burials. It seemed fitting. At times, though, I did have some trouble understanding what some of the other actors were saying due to their heavily Italian accented English.

After reading the reviews here on amazon, I bought the DVD intending to sit down with my wife on our weekly "video viewing Staurday evening together", but couldn't resist taking a peek at the beginning of "For Roseanna." I was so entertained that I watched the entire movie by myself, though it's a fun movie to watch with someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD!.......2006-03-03

Like others here, I first saw this movie when it was still on the New Releases rack of the video store, around 1998. I was about to rent Chasing Amy, and the video store owner suggested this instead. OK, two totally different movies (and I liked Chasing Amy when I eventually saw it) but I've always been grateful to him for recommending For Roseanna. I've never understood why it wasn't more popular ... perhaps lack of exposure/advertising. In any case, I eventually located it on VHS 3 or 4 years ago from an Amazon partner ... but have always wondered why it never made the jump to DVD considering all the other obscure crap (and I do mean crap) that did get DVD transfers. I even sent an email to the studio/production company about it (and, predictably, heard nothing back). But now I can finally enjoy it in widescreen DVD quality with surround sound, and get rid of the VHS (one of very few I have remaining). Maybe I'll donate that to the library...

Produced in 1998 for Turner Classic Movies, this documentary is nearly as exceptional as its subject and just as fascinating. Born in Kansas, Louise Brooks rose from the Ziegfeld Follies to become a silent film icon. As biographer Barry Paris writes for this definitive hourlong profile (narrated by Shirley MacLaine), "Lulu" Brooks was "one of the most intensely erotic screen beauties of all time," and her rise, fall, and resurrection make for a fascinating personal history. Paris charts Brooks's controversial and often self-destructive course from Hollywood to Berlin (where she made cinema history in Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl), while insightful interviews and abundant film clips provide breathtaking proof of Lulu's undeniable beauty. Most revealing are clips from a 1976 interview with Brooks, who remained utterly unique, sharply intelligent, and tragically convinced that she'd failed at everything. Looking for Lulu serves as captivating proof that she was wrong. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Film's first and perhaps ultimate modern woman. "Louise Brooks: Looking for Lulu" explores the life of one of the silver screen's most enduring and provocative stars, the actress who created the sensual, yet innocent Lulu in G.W. Pabst's classic "Pandora's Box." Narrated by Shirley MacLaine, this critically acclaimed documentary combines rare film footage and photographs with interviews. Particularly fascinating is a previously unseen interview with Louise Brooks, filmed in 1976.

5 out of 5 stars Still Entrancing After 80 Years.......2007-03-20

Louise Brooks (1906-1985) was astonishingly beautiful as well as a gifted dancer and writer. But childhood sexual abuse (at the age of nine) probably destroyed her before she even got started. The original model for the quintessential Roaring Twenties flapper, she inspired a generation of young girls (including my mother!) who yearned for liberation in a rumble seat and a bobbed haircut. The subtlety of her naturalistic acting belied the wild life she led, which is fully and unapologetically chronicled in Barry Paris' comprehensive 1989 biography.

This DVD, narrated by Shirley MacLaine, traces Brooks' life from rural Cherryvale, Kansas to New York, Hollywood, Paris, and beyond. Burning bridges was Brooks' specialty, and she had few regrets. She herself counted her lovers at more than 400, of which one (in 1925) was Charlie Chaplin, then twice her age.

A contemporary of the equally self-destructive Clara Bow (whom Brooks idolized), Brooks is a fascinating study, and this DVD proves it.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to buy this, wait!!!.......2007-03-19

four and a half stars, actually.

Don't buy this DVD seperate--this documentary comes as an extra in the recent Criterion issue of "Pandora's Box"--an incredible issue of an incredible film.

I loved this documentary when I first saw it but then I read Barry Paris' biography--who also wrote this documentary. That book is an incredible and deeply moving experience; I don't recall being so moved by a biography before. That book shows how this film is way too brief--and just begins to get to the heart--and mind--of its subject. Still, for what it is--an introduction--its pretty damned good!

Buy "Pandora's Box" which includes this documentary, plus the complete "Lulu in Berlin": Richard Leacock's filmed interview with Louise from the mid-seventies; with Barry Paris's biography, you'll have everything!!

4 out of 5 stars Louise Brooks -- a retrospective look.......2007-01-20

Basic information on the life of a fascinating personality. But what should have been intriguing was cookie cutter sterile: birth-life-death-rediscovered. However, the interviews with an old Louise Brooks were riveting but way too short and the anecdotes from her niece were an interesting look at her personality from the perspective of her family.

5 out of 5 stars Documentary/ Biography originally made for Turner Classic Movies.......2006-06-12

This 1998 film is narrated by Shirley MacLaine (of "John Goldfarb Please Come Home" 1965 fame). We get to know Louise Brooks from her own words and those that met her. There is some great stock footage and in the end you feel that you know her better and that she actually talked to you.

The ne3xt time you watch her movies you will see them through new eyes and a new appreciation for her acting style.

4 out of 5 stars Next Time, Give More.......2006-05-10

Louise Brooks is often looked over because of her nonchalance about acting and her career. She was a very intelligent woman who was known for her intense sexuality. She made several films, the most important ones being made in Germany like Pandora's Box. Her career was ended when the talkies came, not because her voice did not record well but because she was so arrogant to the studios. Years after she stopped making films, she wrote a series of essays compiled into a book called Lulu in Hollywood which helped to rejuvenate her career.

This documentary is great for novice Brooks fans because it touches on basic information like her early life, transitioning into films, and the end of her career. It does not, however, provide much insight into who Brooks was as a person or truly why she behaved the way she did. It is certainly not a deep exploration into her character or her career. For this, it is slightly disappointing, but recognition is recognition after all, and silent film stars are often lucky to get that.

Did I mention the fact that this is a Boring movie.I drank 7 beers and watched this movie.Thinking it had potential since it's about satanism and the like. Also it was suppost to have nudity in it but it didn't,at least my copy didn't.It appeared to have had 3 differant scipts of the movie piced together resulting in a big mess.Nothing scary or exciting here except a big waste of your time.

1 out of 5 stars Wow. Nothing to see........2006-12-04

I just finished wasting 80 minutes watching this "fright" flick. It has some nice shots of NYC, but that's about it. On a scale of 1 - 10,
Skin shown - 1 Horror - 1 Credibility - 1 Acting - 1
I expect a demonic horror film to be frightening, tense, and have some clever twists. This had none. The only erotic shot (nothing sexy in the dvd)is on the COVER of the dvd. The villains were able to kill off a half dozen people without anyone investigating, and apparently no neighbors noticed. In one scene the boring bad-guy carries a young woman out of a gym wrapped in a sheet without anyone questioning him. DUM DUM MUD DUM DUM

5 out of 5 stars Sweeeet.......2001-06-22

This movie has quite possibly become my favorite horror film of all time. The acting was quite superb, the plot was twisted, and it scared the bejezus out of me. I especially like the part where the former nun takes off her cloth and throws it in the flame(talk about getting rid of a bad habit). Also a great part of the movie was the daemon, it was so realistic, I felt like I was going to descend to hell. If you are into serious horror, then pick this up. If you are a wittle cwybaby who can't stand scawy stuff, then go get a cotton candy mohawk and pick up a Barney video

Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0) WIDESCREEN, SYNOPSIS: A man trying to honor the last wish of his beloved wife has to keep an entire city alive in this bittersweet romantic comedy. Marcello (Jean Reno) is the owner of a restaurant in a small village in Italy. His wife Roseanna (Mercedes Ruehl) has received some awful news: she has learned that her weak heart has gotten worse, and she has only a few weeks to live. Roseanna has given Marcello a final request: she wants to be buried next to her daughter, who died some years before. Marcello wants nothing more than to comply with her wishes, but there's a problem; the town's cemetery is quite small, and right now funeral plots are on a first-come, first-served basis. The spot next to Roseanna's daughter does happen to be open, but she'll only get it if no one else dies first. So Marcello suddenly becomes the village's watchdog of health and safety, trying to make sure no one needlessly dies, and even shuffles around a few bodies of people who do happen to pass on. Meanwhile, Roseanna is worried about both Marcello and her sister Cecilia (Polly Walker) and would like them to marry after her death so they won't have to be alone. However, Marcello and Cecilia don't always get along very well, and besides, Cecilia is in love with Antonio (Mark Frankel), whose father has prevented the town's cemetery from expanding. For Roseanna was filmed under the title Roseanna's Grave and was briefly publicized as For the Love of Roseanna.
