You might expect a ménage à trois movie called Splendor to be some sort of steamy, soft-lit sex romp, but it is, in fact, a witty, sassy romantic comedy. Writer-director Gregg Araki set out to make a '30s screwball comedy with a modern twist, and he's mostly succeeded. Splendor is brisk and funny, and if it seems a bit convenient that two guys could love (and sleep with) one woman without killing each other, it's all in the service something bigger--the story of a woman forced to choose between love and security. Kathleen Robertson has a certain impish charm (which unfortunately wears thin at times), Johnathon Schaech and Matt Keeslar are fun as the rivals who ultimately become best buds, but it's Eric Mabius who quietly steals every scene he's in as a TV movie director who's so thoughtful and kind, yet self-absorbed, that he might comfort his bride-to-be on their wedding day by sweetly telling her, "Honey, Amazon.com says I stole every scene I'm in, isn't that great?" --Geof Miller

Elia Kazan's pedal-to-the-metal approach to psychosexual melodrama paid off handsomely when he had layered material by Tennessee Williams or John Steinbeck to work with. The very raw material here is an original by hot-blooded playwright William Inge, about a pair of teenagers in the American Midwest in the 1920s whose lives are ruined by the repressive sexual climate of the period. The girl, played by Natalie Wood, is literally driven batty by her pent-up adolescent lust and ends up in the bin---which admittedly plays better than sounds, because the hunk she yearns for is the young and almost impossibly handsome Warren Beatty. This is a very lush and beautiful movie, but also a deeply silly one. It's grade-A American cheese, with a pinch of dime-store Freud on top.--David Chute

A Star is Born.......2007-06-12
Natalie Woods play a excellent part of a young High School girl in love with her High School sweetheart, played by Warren Beatty(screen debut)torn by beening respected by her mother's wishes and her human desires. This movie moved her from a child actress to a major player in the movie industry in adult roles.
Splendor alright.......2007-05-28
Splendor in the grass is a wonderful old Hollywood film. It's no wonder that Natalie Wood was a "million mens" dreamgirl. She is breath-taking and multi-dimensional in this film. The acting is emotional, and the actions cliff hanging in this beautiful story of love and letting go. It's a must see for anyone who loves old Hollywood classics.

While the primary lesson of Beyond the Gates of Splendor is about the power of Christian love, this extraordinary documentary transcends its missionary message with a universal tale of cultural exchange, murder, and the ultimate act of forgiveness. After establishing that the Waodani Indians in the Amazon basin of Ecuador had endured several generations of violent homicide among tribal neighbors, the film's central story begins to unfold: As American missionaries discover the Waodani in the mid-1950s, their Christian outreach goes smoothly until 1956, when lies and misunderstandings lead to the spear-killing of five of the missionary men whose wives and children--including narrator Steve Saint (whose father was among those killed)--responded to tragedy by living peacefully among the Waodani over the decades that followed. Through home-movie footage, photographs, and eyewitness accounts by American and Waodani alike, this incredible-but-true story of love and understanding unfolds with considerable power, urging the viewer to consider the meaning of this remarkable example of unified humanity. Is the missionary impulse a pure and beneficial one? Are the Waodani best left alone and ignorant of the wide world beyond their village? With deep tragedy, rich humor, and an overwhelming sense of compassion, writer/director Jim Hanon ponders these and other questions, hampered only by an overbearing score (by Ronald Owen) that's lushly beautiful at best, but too often maudlin, manipulative, and shamelessly heavy-handed. It's likely that Christian viewers will be most deeply affected by the film's thematic parallels to the lessons of Christ, but anyone with an ounce of compassion will be similarly moved and astonished. Not surprisingly, Hanon later dramatized the factual events of Beyond the Gates of Splendor in his 2006 feature film The End of the Spear. --Jeff Shannon
Description
"Beyond the Gates" is a feature length documentary film experience about the Waodani Indians and the missionary men and women who have given their lives to reach them. This powerful emotional journey begins with the Waodani describing their way of life before the missionaries visited them in 1956. Narrated by the son of one of the missionaries and each of the wives of the men who died, the audience takes a nostalgic trip back in time to see how the men and women came to meet up with each other in Ecuador. An inspiring story of forgiveness and love.

Secularized presentation of a Christian story.......2007-05-09
This documentary assumes that you have seen the movie, or at least you know what it is all about. If you haven't, or you don't, then you will probably have some trouble following the dramatis personae of this drama. It starts in medias res, that is, there is no preparation or introduction. You have many Indians telling you pieces of the story, mentioning people's names that you don't have any idea who they are. Then come the missionaries (one assumes they are Christians, though this point wasn't made that explicit either) talking about such and such. By minute 30 I still didn't know who was who, or who was married to whom, etc. Very aggravating. I got the story alright. But the presentation is, I regret to say, very poor and disorganized.
I also agree with Michael M. Long (another reviewer) that this is practically a secularized account of a Christian missionary story. Disappointing.
A most secularized account of the lives of several 20th century missionaries.......2007-03-28
This was a most disappointing purchase. I know the historical account of the missionaries who went to Ecuador to reach out to the Waodani. This documentary gave a very, very secular account of what happened.
Gone from the documentary are any mentions of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (how can you have this possible in a documentary about how the Lord changed the lives of an entire tribe?). There is a tremendous gaping hole in what were the motivations of Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, and the other missionaries in going to Ecuador. There is absolutely nothing about their love for the Lord Jesus Christ and their desire to spread the gospel to an unreached people.
The gospel is not even mentioned through the documentary. At one point, the anthropologist interviewed mentions that the Waodani changed from their warring lifestyle because they were given 'new information' from the missionaries. What was this 'new information?' The documentary completely fails to mention that this was none other than the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that the entire tribe changed because they all got saved!
My 90+ minute DVD says it is an abridged version. Maybe this version somehow cut out all the references to the gospel and the Lord Jesus. I don't know.
In summary, this documentary completely fails to give God the glory He deserves.

One of the most acclaimed films of 2003, American Splendor is also one of the most audaciously creative biographical movies ever made. Blending fact, fiction, and personal perspective from the comic books that inspired it, this marvelous portrait of Harvey Pekar--scowling curmudgeon, brow-beaten everyman, insightful chronicler of his own life, and frustrated file clerk at a Cleveland V.A. hospital--is an inspired amalgam of the media (comic books, TV, and film) that lifted Pekar from obscurity to the status of a pop-cultural icon. As played by Paul Giamatti in a master-stroke of casting, we see Pekar and his understanding wife (played by Hope Davis) as underdogs in a world full of obstacles, yet also infused with subtle hope and (gasp!) heartwarming perseverance. We also see the real Pekar, and this multifaceted commingling of "reel" and "real" turns American Splendor into a uniquely cinematic celebration of Pekar's life and, by extension, the tenacity of an unlikely American hero. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Based on the life and work of underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar- a prickly poet of the mundane who knows that all the strategizing in the world can't save a guy from picking the wrong supermarket checkout line.

THE ALL-TIME AMERICAN UNDERDOG.......2007-06-18
PAUL GIAMATTI STARS AS THE OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE HARVEY PEKAR, A WORKING CLASS HERO WHO BECAME A NATIONAL SENSATION DURING THE 80'S WITH HIS REALISTIC CARTOONS DEPICTING HIS OWN DAILY ROUTINE.
BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel
From the streets of Cleveland, OH, emerged the legend of "AMERICAN SPLENDOR", a comic book which faithfully depicted the ups and downs of a man who represented an entire generation of blue-collar workers in an America increasingly dominated by the yuppie ideology of the 80's. Our hero was a former V.A Hospital file clerk named "Harvey Pekar", a middle aged, self-loathing character who suffered from intense depressive compulsions which would constantly keep him in a state of intense negativity. Everything, from his attitudes to his dressing code, would illustrate his total lack of self-esteem. Such careless conditions would lead Harvey to undergo two failed relationships, which would end up taking a severe toll on his personal life.
As of the second rejection, Harvey starts looking at life with different eyes. It's when he has an epiphany and decides that he will make the most out of the ordinary. Tired of the childish thematics of super-hero and animal cartoons, he decides to create a comic book in which the main character is no one but himself. He then starts to narrate his own real life experiences through his stories, using the cartoon media as his vehicle. Illustrations are crafted by underground comic artists such as the legendary Robert Crumb, a personal friend of Harvey's which he met back in the early 60's in Cleveland. Everything which happens to Harvey's life has the potential to become comic book material.
As soon as the comic books hit the street they become a major sensation, and do a great deal to help Pekar's personal life. Through his own gloomy vision of the world which sorrounded him, Pekar was able to generate a very refined form of dark humor which conquered a series of fans throughout the nation. One of these fans ended up becoming his loving wife, Joyce Brabner.
On the screen, faithfully portraying Pekar, is Paul Giamatti. His impersonation is so near perfection, that even when Pekar himself appears in the movie it is quite hard to tell who is who. Giamatti's acting is superb. He fills Pekar's shoes with no difficulty and feels quite comfortable in them. Giamatti demonstrates great easiness in playing the self-loathing, all-time loser type. Similarities between his character "Miles" from "SIDEWAYS" and "Harvey Pekar" are quite obvious. Both share these common personality traits, which Giamatti so authentically delivers through his acting. In a supporting role is actress Hope Davis, playing Harvey's wife, Joyce. Both Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis, in addition to their phenomenal acting skills, are aslo very noticeable for their physical similarities to the original Harvey Pekar and Joyce Brabner.
Another strong point which comes to the aid of this motion picture is its cartoon-like form of narrative with shots which very much resemble a comic book. Boxes and dialogue balloons are carefully inserted in certain moments through-out the movie as to enhance the look and feel of this cartoon-driven plot. Animated drawings of Harvey himself interact with Paul Giamatti's character, a graphic resource which adds much credibility and interest to the picture as a whole.
With an interesting solid plot and grandiose acting by Paul Giamatti, "AMERICAN SPLENDOR" is destined to become a cult classic. It is one of those movies which so brilliantly deals with the weaknesses of human character and the possibilities of turn-arounds in life. Finally, it also explores a genre which many times can become dull by the exaggerations and misconducts which are so common when exploring biographies. In this case, the theme was sharply conducted by director Robert Pulcini, who did a great job in leveling the characters' virtues and limitations without letting one overshadow the other.
***** A CULT CLASSIC !!!!

Movie About A Persistent Egomaniac.......2007-03-21
Harvey Pekar is a man of marginal talent who, through sheer bloody single mindedness aka persistent egomania, has made something of a name for himself. Working with his significantly more talented friend R. Crumb, Pekar has put out a number of "underground" comic books about his mundane life as a working stiff.
One of the more unusual features of this unusual movie about an unusual man has Pekar writing for his comic book commenting on Paul Giamatti's performance as Pekar. This movie is quite unpredictable and as such is quite unlike anything that you have ever seen before.
An offbeat movie about an offbeat kind of man.......2007-02-17
This is really a great film about Harvey Pekar, the underground comic book writer who created the comic book series "American Splendor". I'm surprised this movie hasn't garnered more critical attention than it has. The movie basically takes you from the end of Harvey's second marriage up to the point of his retirement as a file clerk. Pekar is living a life of quiet desperation - everything in his life is generic. The film lends a dingy quality to Pekar's surroundings that really gives it that "garage sale" look right down to the light fixtures in his apartment. Even the supermarkets and restaurants Harvey frequent make K-mart look classy. Unlike his friends and coworkers though, he is painfully aware of the reality of his life. He has a moment of clarity one day while waiting in line at the grocery store behind a woman who is arguing over why she should pay 1.50 for six glasses that are marked two dollars, when he thinks of a way to strike out at all of this - he decides to document his feelings in a comic. Unfortunately, Harvey can't draw. He comes up with the narrative, but is only able to show stick figures as the actual characters in the drawings. Harvey's big break is that he has become friends with underground comic Robert Crumb before Crumb was famous and the two were just a couple of "ordinary" guys looking for bargains at Cleveland rummage sales. Crumb is impressed with the statement Harvey is trying to make and agrees to do the illustrations, thus the comic "American Splendor" is born.
To me, the best part of this movie is the love story between Harvey and his third wife Joyce. These two people are just weird enough to make it work. What makes it work is that they have staked out their own individual claims to different enough territories in the land of weird that their respective neuroses don't bump into one another too badly, as had happened in Harvey's past marriages. Harvey is a man who has very un-mundane statements to make about his mundane world, but doesn't have any real illusions about changing it. Joyce is a self-diagnosed depressed anemic who has memorized the DSM 3 and is therefore happy to diagnose people with personality disorders and then pretty much takes them as she finds them, in spite of her claims of being a reformer. Because neither one wants to change the other, the relationship works.
The film is really cleverly done, with comic book illustrations showing what Pekar is thinking in various situations along with narration and a couple of interviews with the actual Pekar and his wife interspersed throughout the film giving it a real feeling of authenticity. Paul Giamatti is simply marvelous as the caustic "warts and more" Harvey Pekar. How often do you see an actor share the screen with the person he is playing, as happens in this film, and not even notice a blip in continuity? His performance is that good. Giamatti certainly deserves better than playing supporting roles in films like "Big Fat Liar". Kudos also to James Urbaniak for his small role as artist and illustrator Robert Crumb. For the small amount of time he is on the screen he really captures the essence of the guy.
Pretty good movie.......2007-01-26
This guy IS my brother. Got it for him for a gift; I hope he likes it.
ordinary hero.......2007-01-25
Based upon the real life story of Harvey Pekar. Pekar spent most of his life as a file clerk in a VA hospital in Cleveland, then became the most unlikely celebrity when he created the comic series American Splendor. Clearly, this quintessential misanthrope could write about what every day people experience. The film intersperses the drama with real interviews with Pekar, his wife and colleagues, along with animated comics.

Bizarre Love Triangle.......2006-03-21
And a charming triangle, splendor despite being a not conventional story is touching and lovely , Veronica cannot decide what is the best for the child shes expecting after a season living with her two loved best friends Zed and Abel whom maintain a sexual relation with her in a "friendly" sense but then Ernest came along, a sucessfull independant movie director who falls in love with Veronica and seems to be the rigth guy for her and her coming child, her mind tells her that, but her heart tells her to keep the relation with Zed and Abel so theres the crossroad, you gonna have to find out what happens at the end, in other hand the soundtrack is awesome, New Order "Bizarre love triangle", Blur , Slowdive (amazing band), House Of Love , Suede, wow!!!!!! a transition from 90s and the new millenium.

Wow, Now Here's an Important Movie!.......2006-01-04
Because gosh, you know what America needs? Sexual freedom. I mean, we really only THOUGHT we were liberated, sleeping with anything and everything that takes our fancy--but we weren't. What we NEED to do is to combine the promiscuous experiences, so we can collect venereal diseases and birth children of confused parentage even faster! Splendor shows us just what we're missing as it invites us to liberate ourselves from primitive notions like jealousy and knowing who the hell your father is. Don't let people judge you, man, as long as you're having fun, cos isn't that what it's all about? Me, I'm about promiscuous polyamory! Way to go, Splendor, lead the way!
Araki Examines Contemporary Relationships.......2005-11-07
SPLENDOR is a quick little film that once again demonstrates writer/director Gregg Araki's talent in making big social comments out of just a little idea. Though this may not be one of his most successful films, it certainly has enough going for it to give it a look.
Narrated by flippant, kooky, slightly irritatingly shallow Veronica (Kathleen Robertson) who also is the main character of the story, we find that Veronica (aka V aka Ron) has been on a dry run for a love life for a long time, and just when she thinks she'll never find her man, up pops Halloween, and with her best friend Mike (Kelly MacDonald) she ventures into a party where she meets not one but two candidates for relationship - Abel (hunky Jonathan Schaech) who is a would be writer and is inept at about everything social and Zed (also hunky Matt Keeslar) who is a drummer whose intellect and socialization skills don't go far beyond his drumsticks. Veronica beds them both, finds them equally attractive and eventually the three become a ménage à trois in the same apartment. The two men, while transiently jealous of each other, ultimately find happiness in Veronica's breadwinning capabilities and both truly love her and each other. Things become strained when Veronica learns she is pregnant!
Meanwhile, Veronica is offered upward mobility by yet another hunk Ernest (Eric Mabius) who represents stability and money whereas Abel and Zed represent only passion. Considering her pregnant life choices she agrees to marry Ernest despite her lack of loving him and all proceeds towards the wedding day when Abel and Zed decide to make changes in the plans.
Schaech, Mabius and Keeslar provide sufficient eye candy to overcome a strained script. Had Veronica been cast differently the story may have had a better impact, but as it is this remains a fun, spunky movie that for Araki fans is a good diversion. Grady Harp, November 05
What's that you say Ms. Robertson.......2005-05-01
I was not conscious of "Splendor" being a Gregg Araki film when I started watching it but after the first two sequences I was thinking: "this is great directing-who did this"? While the technique screams "Araki", as does the casting of Kathleen Robertson, the narrative is so conventional that you find the combination hard to reconcile. I loved an earlier comment that "Splendor" is like a John Hughes remake of "The Doom Generation.
Although Araki is paying homage to the great screwball comedies of the 1930's: "Topper", "It Happened One Night", "The Awful Truth", and "Bringing Up Baby"; the style and substance of "Splendor" is closer to Mike Nichols' "The Graduate" (not to mention an amusing parody of the "Graduate's" climatic wedding scene).
Kathleen Robertson has the Rose McGowen part in this version of "The Doom Generation" and is generally well suited to the role. I have not decided yet if Robertson is in McGowen's class as an actress, or in the class of her fellow Canadians Mia Kirshner and Sarah Polley. Robertson was excellent in "Maniac Mansion" and "Beverly Hills 90210", but these were similar roles that appear to mirror her own cool and detached personality. One thing that is clear is that she was a great choice for Ariki's trademark close-ups. Anyone perceptive enough to close the camera to face distance when shooting McGowen, Robertson, and most recently Michelle Trachtenberg has a eye for breathtakingly beautiful visuals.
The premise does not really have enough substance to sustain a feature although it might work as a half-hour television sit-com (see "Three's Company"). When the premise becomes tired the story brings in a new character, Eric Mabious; and the film self-destructs, killing time until a decent ending sequence. A tip-off that a screen writer has limited life experience to draw from is having cast and crew occupations for the characters. Robertson's character is an aspiring actress and Mabious is directing her in a made-for-television drama. His character is so hopelessly one-dimensional and painfully pathetic that I was convinced that he had a sinister side (what was with those blue contact lenses) that would eventually manifest itself. But this does not happen, maybe Araki had something interesting in mind and abandoned it in re-write. Mabious becomes a non-factor (see totally irrelevancy) and his scenes were simply inserted as padding to get this thing up to feature length.
The bottom line is that Araki fans will be a little disappointed with "Splendor". It is very conventional, it isn't much of a story, and the good banter is limited (although Kelly MacDonald has fantastic dialogue in all her scenes) . But if your Araki appreciation is more for his directorial talents (casting, mise en scene details, camera movement and placement) and his post-production originality, you will find "Splendor" measures up very well to his prior work. The morning after scene early in the film simply blows away anything similar from any director.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Absolutely appealing and suprisingly hip........2004-12-10
Gregg Araki has made a name for himself in the darker and more obscure side of film. Though this film has flourishes of the same Araki we have come to know (threesomes and homosexuality) this title is suprisingly hip and even refreshing. Being canadian, I have come to like the talents of the few actors hailing from my country. Kathleen Robertson fills a role that is nothing short of ravishing and adorable. It's much different from the sarcastic and barbed character she played in Nowhere (Lucifer). She is by far the heart and soul of this delightful and sexy comedy. Watching this movie, to me, was like drinking a strawberry milkshake in every sense. The storyline was, as some have put, a more modern version of "Three's Company" wich is also made mention of at one point in the movie. The plot takes many unique turns and the ending is even more of a delightful suprise. The soundtrack to this movie is excellent as Gregg once again proves his talent in musical selection as well as filmaking. Like in Nowhere, if you follow the closing credits through for a bit you'll be treated to another half a minute or so of antics from the characters. In summary this movie is a 3/4 or so change from the Araki we have come to know and love, but definitely another great movie success. (For the record.....Ms Kathleen Robertson, great job! Love ya lots!)

French Impressionism at the Musee D'Orsay traces the history of the Museum and its celebrated masterpieces from artists such as Manet, Renior and many others.
Through its broad tidal waves of light and color, the Impressionist Movement redirected the harsh realism and exaggerated idealism in European art in the late nineteenth century.
This film explores the significant aspects of Impressionism and how the Musee D'Orsay has become the worldwide home of works from the Impressionist Movement. Originally used as a train station and sitting in its stunning location along the River Seine, since opening its doors in 1986, the Musee D'Orsay is now one of the unsurpassed museums exhibiting the artistic heritage of France.

Description
Auguste Rodin, known to many as the last artist before the start of the Abstract Movement, was one of France's finest artists in the late nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries.
Auguste Rodin: Hands of Genius, captures both his greatest achievements as an artist, as well as his struggles with the critics and within his personal life. In spite of the complexity of working in stone and the innate restricted movement of the sculptural art form, Rodin excelled in expressing the fluid motions of his models, and making stone seem as soft as skin. His success and devotion to his fellow countrymen made him a symbol of pride for all of France.
DVD Bonus Features include Bonus Music from French legends Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker, Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett, Photo Gallery, Auguste Rodin Biography, Major Works of Rodin, Instant Access to over 30 Scene Selections, Digitally Remastered Audio and Video and Interactive Multi-Directional Menus.
Customer Reviews:
An Informative, Cheap Production.......2007-05-24
In the middle of this work, one narrator says, "There are many famous painters, but only a handful of famous sculptors." I agree and that's why this program was informative to me. I now know about the world's second most famous sculptor (assuming Michelangelo is the first).
Like Lauryn Hill and Luther Vandross, Rodin lost at competitions before becoming famous. Still, like Charles Dickens, he became successful while alive, unlike many painters and other artists.
They showed one statue and I thought, "Wow! That work is on the cover of 'Three in Love,' a book about polyamory." Later, the documentary tells us that Rodin had a female lover and a common-law wife. This reminded me of how the muralist Diego Rivera made works that included his wife Frida Kahlo and his mistresses. As I like to repeat, Bill Clinton and Francois Mitterand were not the only ones.
As informative as I found this work, it was also REALLY CHEAP. The female narrator had terrible French pronunciation. Though this seems to be an American work, the word "splendour" comes up on the screen, written in the British fashion. When the narrator says "Rodin moved from France to Brussels," they show a cutout of Rodin's head hopping its way to that city. Rodin's death is brought up ten minutes before the work ends and the rest of the program is just filler. I wonder if that was done so that school classes showing this work that only have 30 minutes to do so can shut it off when the need arises.
I was also surprised at how much of Rodin's work lies in the United States. Of course, this country is rich, powerful, and highly populated, but if France loves their son, why don't they have the majority of his works?
Product Description
Plot summary: Splendor is the name of an old movie theater managed by Jordan (Mastroianni), who inherited it from his father. The theater is in decay and only generates debts and trouble, but Jordan gets aid in his almost quixotian quest from projectionist Luigi (Troisi) and ushurette Chantale (Vlady). However, Jordan is finally forced to sell the Splendor to businessman Lo Fazio (Piperno), which plans to transform it in some kind of furniture store. When Jordan leaves the theater for the last time (the very first scene), he recalls the glorious days of Splendor and movies in general.
